BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristic pattern of age-related cortical thinning in patients with Down Syndrome (DS), as assessed by MRI and automatic cortical thickness measurements. METHODS Ninety-one non-demented subjects with DS (range 11–53 years) were examined using a 1.5 T scanner. MRI-based quantification of cortical thickness was performed using FreeSurfer software package., The Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient between age and mean cortical thickness was evaluated for all subjects participating in the study. RESULTS A significant negative correlation between cortical thickness and age was found bilaterally in the frontal, temporal, parietal and cingulate gyrus. Specific investigation of cerebral lobes showed a more evident involvement of the frontal one, compared to others. Moreover, the age related reduction of cortical thickness appeared to be more significant and rapid in patients between 20 and 30 years of age. CONCLUSIONS Our findings showed that Down Syndrome subjects are affected by a diffuse cortical thinning. The involvement of cortical structures can be observed at an earlier age than previous studies have reported.

Purpose To compare intraoperative dynamic contrast-enhanced (dCE) sequences with conventional CE (cCE) in the evaluation of the surgical bed after transsphenoidal removal of pituitary macroadenomas. Materials and Methods Twenty-one patients with macroadenoma were selected. They all underwent intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) (1.5T) acquisitions during transsphenoidal resection of the tumor. For each patient, dCE and cCE images were acquired in the operating room after tumor removal. The mean values of surgical cavities volumes were measured and statistically compared through Student's t-test analysis. Informed consent to iMRI was obtained from the patients as a part of the surgical procedure. Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval was obtained. Results No patient showed recurrence within at least 1 year of follow-up. Two patients showed residual tumor in the iMRI. Intraoperative analysis of the remaining 19 demonstrated that the mean value of the surgical cavities was significantly bigger in dCE than in cCE images (2955 mm3 vs. 1963 mm3, respectively, P = 0.022). Conclusion This study demonstrated underestimation of surgical cavity by conventional iMRI, simulating residual tumor and potentially leading to unnecessary surgical revision. J. Magn. Reson. Neuroanatomy is considered to be one of the most difficult anatomical subjects for students. To provide motivation and improve learning outcomes in this area, clinical cases and neurosurgical images from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractographies produced using an intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging apparatus (MRI/DTI) were presented and discussed during integrated second-year neuroanatomy, neuroradiology, and neurosurgery lectures over the 2008–2011 period. Anonymous questionnaires, evaluated according to the Likert scale, demonstrated that students appreciated this teaching procedure. Academic performance (examination grades for neuroanatomy) of the students who attended all integrated lectures of neuroanatomy, was slightly though significantly higher compared to that of students who attended these lectures only occasionally or not at all (P50.04). Significantly better results were obtained during the national progress test (focusing on morphology) by students who attended the MRI/DTI-assisted lectures, compared to those who did so only in part or not at all, compared to the average student participating in the national test. These results were obtained by students attending the second, third and, in particular, the fourth year (P0.0001) courses during the three academic years mentioned earlier. This integrated neuroanatomy model can positively direct students in the direction of their future professional careers without any extra expense to the university. In conclusion, interactive learning tools, such as lectures integrated with intraoperative MRI/DTI images, motivate students to study and enhance their neuroanatomy education. The most frequent type of Krabbe disease has an infantile onset. Unusual slowly progressive adult forms have also been described. We described a different involvement of white matter tracts where magnetic resonance signal alterations were evident in a case of a patient affected by late-onset form of disease.

Objective To explore gray (GM) and white matter (WM) abnormalities and the relationships with neuropsychopathology in first-episode schizophrenia (FES). Method Nineteen patients with first episode of non-affective psychosis and 18 controls underwent a magnetic resonance voxel-based morphometry. Additionally, WM fractional anisotropy (FA) was calculated. For correlative analysis, symptoms and neuropsychological performances were scored by PANSS and by a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment respectively. Results Patients showed significantly decreased volume of left temporal lobe and disarray of all major WM tracts. To identify normal variations in the magnetic resonance imaging appearances of the corpus callosum with regard to sex and age, a prospective study was performed in 130 normal subjects. Callosal measurements were calculated by morphometric analysis. There were no significant sex differences in corpus callosum area or the callosal subregions. The absolute area did not decrease significantly with aging in normal males or females. However, age-related changes of callosal configuration were shown by a decrease in the ratio of the rostrum and genu to the splenium.
