This paper presents a uniform optimal power sharing strategy to coordinate the wind turbines (WTs) in a wind farm (WF) to provide occasional and continuous frequency response (FR). The coordination of WTs is formulated as an optimisation problem that takes into account the WT dynamics and tries to reduce the long term loss of energy yield caused by the provision of FR. This is achieved by maximising the total kinetic energy of the WF over time while reducing wear and tear of WTs. The proposed optimal power sharing strategy relies on periodic communication between each WT and a WF controller. Local linear approximations are employed to predict the system behaviour and the solution of the optimisation problem is obtained using the proposed centralised and/or distributed algorithm. The distributed algorithm only requires one‐way communication between the WF controller and local WTs, reducing the communication overheads. Simulation studies are carried out on a WF model to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. The results show the strategy enables reduction of yield loss over previous methods while avoiding over torque operation during FR provision.

Circulating fatty acids (FA) derived largely from dairy consumption have most commonly been measured in total human serum or phospholipid (PL) fractions, and have been used as validated biomarkers of dairy intake in a growing number of epidemiological studies. Nevertheless, measurement and characterization of a wider spectrum of FA biomarkers of dairy across the four major serum lipid fractions is lacking. This study aimed to (1) quantify FA biomarkers of dairy in PL, triacylglycerol (TAG), cholesteryl ester (CE), and unesterified fatty acid (FFA) serum lipid fractions; and (2) identify potential demographic and metabolic factors that may modify the proportions of these FA across serum fractions. Baseline data from 444 adults in the PROMISE cohort were analyzed. FA biomarkers, 15:0, t16:1n-7, 18:2-c9,t11, and t18:1n-7 were quantified from serum. Dairy intake was estimated using the validated Canadian Diet History Questionnaire. Our results show that t18:1n-7 was the most abundant FA biomarker in all fractions except CE, where 18:2-c9,t11 was the most abundant. Positive correlations within fractions, and across FA in the PL, CE, and FFA fractions were found, however, TAG FA were negatively correlated with the other fractions. PL and CE FA were positively associated with dairy intake, and negatively associated with markers of dysmetabolism while, in contrast, these markers were predictors of higher TAG dairy FA. This study is the first to demonstrate distinct proportions of dairy FA in different serum lipid fractions. PL and CE FA marked dairy intake in this cohort, while TAG FA appeared to be markers of dysmetabolism.

The ever-increasing prevalence of negative shocks experienced by poor, vulnerable households often induces extreme measures as ways to recover from the negative effects on income. Child marriage is one of the coping mechanisms households may use. This study examines whether young people in households that experience a negative shock are more likely to marry than those not experiencing a shock, and whether this effect differs by lineage system. I show that marrying off daughters is, in fact, a coping mechanism used by patrilineal households after experiencing a shock and that these effects are potentially strongest for young women who are already out of school. Conversely, I find no significant effect for young men. Additionally, I find suggestive evidence of an increased likelihood of young women engaging in transactional sexual relationships after a shock as an individual-level coping mechanism. Understanding the mechanisms leading to the increased incidence of these phenomena provides valuable information that can help combat such practices.

Background Multiple outcomes measures including exercise capacity and quality of life are necessary to get complete and accurate picture of cystic fibrosis (CF) progression. In this pilot study, we investigated these measures in CF longitudinally for a year to determine (a) minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) and CF Health-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire (CFQ-R) domains and (b) how 6MWD, CFQ-R, and spirometry change during times of exacerbation and baseline health and their relationship among each other. Methods Subjects with moderate and severe CF (baseline FEV1 less than 70% predicted) at Akron Children's Hospital CF centre were followed for a full year longitudinally. All three tests (6MWT, CFQ-R, and spirometry) were done during each outpatient visit and weekly during inpatient admission. MCID was estimated for these parameters using distribution-based methods. Finally, data were examined visually using longitudinal graphs for each subject. Results Twelve CF subjects (eight [67%] males and age range 13-46 years) were followed for a full year resulting in at least four encounters per subject. 6MWD (m) and CFQ-R respiratory had an MCID of 33 m and 7.3, respectively. MCIDs for FEV1 (percentage predicted) and CFQ-R physical were 7.1 and 11.4, respectively. The longitudinal evaluation of multiple outcome measures during periods of disease exacerbation and baseline health showed that these parameters did not appear to change in accordance with each other. Conclusion In this pilot study, MCIDs for 6MWD and CFQ-R domains were calculated for the first time to facilitate their use as additional outcome measures in CF. The disparity among multiple outcome measures highlights that these measures together may provide a more complete picture in CF than any single measure alone.

The rapid development experienced by the transportation industry in the past decades has led to many configurations of networks and therefore to an explosion of variants in transportation problems, motivating researchers to look at broader logistic problems, beyond the basic vehicle routing problems. This work introduces a new type of problem scenario combining various attributes: a pickup and delivery problem with multiple regions, multiple depots, and multiple transportation modes. We provide definitions, a literature review, and a step-by-step construction of the mathematical models from a simple and well-known scenario to the multiregion multidepot pickup and delivery problem (MR-MDPDP). For each step the relevant literature is examined. Furthermore, we suggest possible extensions for prospective research.

Understanding the effects of fungicides on nontarget organisms at realistic concentrations and exposure durations is vital for determining potential impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Environmental concentrations of the fungicide azoxystrobin have been reported up to 4.6 μg/L in the United States and 30 μg/L in Europe. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the chronic toxicity of azoxystrobin in water-only exposures with an amphipod (Hyalella azteca; 42-d exposure), a midge (Chironomus dilutus; 50-d exposure), a cladoceran (Ceriodaphnia dubia; 7-d exposure), and a unionid mussel (Lampsilis siliquoidea; 28-d exposure) at environmentally relevant concentrations. The potential photo-enhanced toxicity of azoxystrobin accumulated by C. dubia and L. siliquoidea following chronic exposures to azoxystrobin was also evaluated. The 20% effect concentrations (EC20s) based on the most sensitive endpoint were 4.2 μg/L for H. azteca reproduction, 12 μg/L for C. dubia reproduction and C. dilutus emergence, and >28 μg/L for L. siliquoidea. Hyalella azteca was more sensitive to azoxystrobin compared with the other 3 species in the chronic exposures. No photo-enhanced toxicity was observed for either C. dubia or L. siliquoidea exposed to ultraviolet light in control water following azoxystrobin tests. The results of the present study indicate chronic effects of azoxystrobin on 3 of 4 invertebrates tested at environmentally relevant concentrations. The changes noted in biomass and reproduction have the potential to alter the rate of ecological processes driven by aquatic invertebrates. Environ Toxicol Chem 2017;36:2308-2315. Organic row cropping systems utilize diverse management regimes, but share required practices, including biological fertility sources, diverse rotations, incorporation of organic matter, and lack of synthetic pesticides. The practices can alter the composition of functionally significant soil microbes relative to conventional practices. We used 16S rRNA sequencing to profile soil bacterial communities at five locations where long‐term organic and conventional row cropping were practiced in close proximity on the same underlying soil type. Location effects, reflecting soil characteristics, were stronger than effects of organic vs. conventional management or corn (Zea mays L.) vs. soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cropping on the relative abundance of bacterial taxa. A core subset of 1,300 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were detected in all sampled soils. Firmicutes made up a smaller portion of core OTUs than total OTUs, indicating that taxa in this group were more likely to be found only in specific environments. Conversely, Actinobacteria OTUs were more highly represented in the core than the full OTU set, indicating wide distribution of these taxa across environments. The genus Streptomyces comprised a five‐fold–greater proportion of core OTUs than of total OTUs. We identified 303 OTUs whose abundance differed with management system. Of those, members of the phyla Bacteroidetes and Planctomycetes tended to be more abundant under organic management, whereas members of the Actinobacteria and Verrucomicrobia tended to be more abundant in conventional. This multi‐site study contributes to identification of bacterial community members most affected by organic practice adoption across soil types and practices.

Background Research investigating treatments and interventions for cognitive decline fail due to difficulties in accurately recognizing behavioral signatures in the presymptomatic stages of the disease. For this validation study, we took our previously constructed digital biomarker‐based prognostic models and focused on generalizability and robustness of the models. Method We validated prognostic models characterizing subjects using digital biomarkers in a longitudinal, multi‐site, 40‐month prospective study collecting data in memory clinics, general practitioner offices, and home environments. Results Our models were able to accurately discriminate between healthy subjects and individuals at risk to progress to dementia within 3 years. The model was also able to differentiate between people with or without amyloid neuropathology and classify fast and slow cognitive decliners with a very good diagnostic performance. Conclusion Digital biomarker prognostic models can be a useful tool to assist large‐scale population screening for the early detection of cognitive impairment and patient monitoring over time.

This article highlights considerations for teachers when selecting and using e-books and e-book applications (apps) with beginning readers during guided and independent reading. A framework for examining e-books and e-book apps is suggested, and several apps and related digital features are described. The article also includes an overview of children's emergent and early reading behaviors, the types of texts that support these behaviors, and examples of how digital texts could influence beginning reading instruction. Also discussed are the ways in which e-books and e-book apps can enhance the home–school connection and support English learners.

BACKGROUND Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) are debilitating diseases for which a patient's prognosis depends heavily on complete tumor resection. Currently, the surgeon's fingers determine the location of tissue margins. This study evaluated the diagnostic utility of a novel imaging modality, dynamic optical contrast imaging (DOCI), in the detection of HNSCC. This system generates contrast by illuminating the tissue with pulsed light and detecting variations in endogenous fluorophore lifetimes. METHODS A total of 47 fresh ex vivo samples from 15 patients were imaged with the DOCI system immediately after surgical resection. DOCI maps were analyzed to determine the statistical significance of contrast between tumors and adjacent nonmalignant tissue. Pilot intraoperative clinical data were also acquired. Purpose: Bronchiectasis and airway wall thickening are commonly assessed in computed tomography (CT) by comparing the airway size with the size of the accompanying artery. Thus, in order to automate the quantification of bronchiectasis and wall thickening following a similar principle, there is a need for methods that automatically segment the airway and vascular trees, measure their size, and pair each airway branch with its accompanying artery. Methods: This paper combines and extends existing techniques to present a fully automated pipeline that, given a thoracic chest CT, segments, measures, and pairs airway branches with the accompanying artery, then quantifies airway wall thickening and bronchiectasis by measuring the wall-artery ratio (WAR) and lumen and outer wall airway-artery ratio (AAR). Measurements that do not use the artery size for normalization are also extracted, including wall area percentage (WAP), wall thickness ratio (WTR), and airway diameters. Results: The method was thoroughly evaluated using 8000 manual annotations of airway-artery pairs from 24 full-inspiration pediatric CT scans (12 diseased and 12 controls). Limits of agreement between the automatically and manually measured diameters were comparable to interobserver limits of agreement. Differences in automatically obtained WAR, AAR, WAP, and WTR between bronchiectatic subjects and controls were similar as when manual annotations were used: WAR and outer AAR were significantly higher in the bronchiectatic subjects (p < 0.05), but lumen AAR, WAP, and WTR were not. Only measurements that use artery size for normalization led to significant differences between groups, highlighting the importance of airway-artery pairing. Conclusions: The fully automatic method presented in this paper could replace time-consuming manual annotations and visual scoring methods to quantify abnormal widening and thickening of airways.

Aquatic fungi contribute significantly to the decomposition of leaves in streams, a key ecosystem service. Little is known, however, about the effects of fungicides on aquatic fungi and macroinvertebrates involved with leaf decomposition. Red maple (Acer rubrum) leaves were conditioned in a stream to acquire microbes (bacteria and fungi) or leached in tap water (unconditioned) to simulate potential reduction of microbial biomass by fungicides. Conditioned leaves were exposed to fungicide formulations QUILT (azoxystrobin + propiconazole) or PRISTINE (boscalid + pyraclostrobin) in the presence and absence of the leaf shredder, Hyalella azteca (amphipods; 7-d old at start of exposures) for 14 d at 23 °C. The QUILT formulations (∼0.3 μg/L, 1.8 μg/L, and 8 μg/L) tended to increase leaf decomposition by amphipods (not significant) without a concomitant increase in amphipod biomass, indicating potential increased consumption of leaves with reduced nutritional value.
