We present a method for finely adjustable electroosmotic flow (EOF) velocity in cathodic direction for the optimization of separations in capillary electrophoresis. To this end, we use surface modification of the separation fused silica capillary by the covalently attached copolymer of acrylamide (AM) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate (AMPS), that is, poly(AM-co-AMPS) or PAMAMPS. Coatings were formed by the in-capillary polymerization of a mixture of the neutral AM and anionic AMPS monomers premixed in various ratios in order to control the charge density of the copolymer. Anterior bite planes are bite-raising appliances used for deep bite correction. However, muscle responses to anterior bite planes of different harnesses may vary.To prospectively evaluate masticatory muscle activity, muscle balance and maximum bite force (MBF) responses to anterior bite planes fabricated from acrylic resin (ABP) or bi-laminate thermoplastic (TBP) over 6 months in children with a deep bite.Sixty-six children were randomly assigned to the ABP, TBP or untreated control groups. Masticatory muscle activity, activity index (AC) and percentage overlapping coefficient (POC) were assessed by surface electromyography; MBF, using a custom-made bite force sensor. Data were collected before, immediately after appliance insertion and after 2 weeks and 1, 3 and 6 months of treatment. Within- and between-group differences were analysed using the one-way ANOVA/Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests (α = .05); Friedman's tests were used to assess within-group differences over time (α = .08).At rest, no dependent variables changed throughout the study. At maximum clenching, masticatory muscle activity immediately dropped significantly but returned to baseline values and was equal to the control group at 1-3 months. The ABP group had significantly lower masseter activity and AC than the TBP group after insertion. Neither POC nor MBF were significantly different within or between groups.Masticatory muscle activity reduced after anterior bite plane insertion but returned to baseline after 1-3 months. Masseter activity decreased significantly more in the ABP group than TBP group. Neither appliance significantly affected POC or MBF.Thai Clinical Trial Registry (TCTR20210330002).

To assess the implant-abutment discrepancy of complete-arch frameworks manufactured using milling and additive electron beam melting (EBM) technologies, before and after acrylic resin veneering application.A definitive implant cast with six implant replicas was digitized using a laboratory scanner. A software program was used to design an implant-supported framework which was manufactured using milling (M group) and EBM (EBM group) technologies (n = 10). In the M group, titanium milled specimens were fabricated. In the EBM group, titanium EBM specimens were obtained. A coordinate measurement machine (CMM) was used to assess the implant-abutment discrepancy at x-, y-, and z-axed between the specimens and the implant-abutment replicas of the definitive cast. The implant replicas positioned on the lateral incisor positions were not able to be assessed. The 3D gap discrepancy was calculated:The manufacturing method (df = 1, F = 7.00, p = 0.009) and implant position (df = 3, F = 129.82, p0.001) were significant predictors of the x-axis discrepancy. The veneering procedures (df = 1, F = 21.55, p0.001) and implant position (df = 3, F = 95.42, p0.001) were significant predictors of the y-axis discrepancy. The manufacturing method (df = 1, F = 11.79, p = 0.001) was a significant predictor of the z-axis discrepancy. Lastly, the manufacturing method (df = 1, F = 5.11, p = 0.026), implant position (df = 3, F = 11.36, p0.001), and veneering procedures (df = 1, F = 41.56, p0.001) were significant predictors of the 3D gap discrepancy in which the manufacturing method explains the 2.37% of variation in the 3D gap discrepancy, the implant position explains the 15.82% of variation in the 3D gap discrepancy, and veneering procedures explain the 19.29% of variation in the 3D gap discrepancy results.The manufacturing methods, veneering procedures, and implant position influenced the linear implant-abutment discrepancy. The milled technique tested obtained lower linear implant-abutment discrepancy compared with the EBM method evaluated. The acrylic resin veneering procedures increased the implant-abutment discrepancy.

The main objective of this paper is to analyse and attempt to understand the nature of rheological changes observed and the dynamics of Carbopol NF 980 hydroalcoholic gels neutralized specifically by triethanol amine (TEA), both as a function of time and alcohol type to probe time stabilities and ageing effects in such carbopol gel systems. The rheological changes and dynamics of 3 carbopol gel systems were observed; the gels included a water-based, ethanol-based, and isopropyl alcohol-based gel. It is hoped that this study shall shed light on the dynamical nature and the microstructural evolution of such networked gel systems, which were maintained under closed isothermal conditions and left completely unperturbed. The experimental results can provide the information necessary to understand and proposes plausible mechanisms guiding this dynamical behaviour in hydroalcoholic carbopol gels.A TA instrument mechanical rheometer was used to measure the viscosity and storage and loss modulus, and a pH meter was utilized to determine the changes in each sample over the period.Studying the differences in the gel structures upon initial preparation illustrated that the ethanol and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) gels differed from the water-based gel in terms of viscosity, G', and G″, with the IPA gel displaying the lowest viscosity and moduli values across all shear rates. All the three gel systems exhibited strong shear thinning characteristics and were reminiscent of yield stress type found in colloidal gels. The water-based gel compared to the hydroalcoholic gels was strongly G' dominated, with the magnitude of the difference between G' and G″ observed to be much higher. This reflects that initial formation of the water-based gel structure possesses a much more rigid structure with a high elastic modulus component dominating. This also suggests that the water-based gel structure displayed stronger interactions between the carbopol particles when compared to those of the hydroalcoholic gels. Over the 30-day period, it was observed that the ethanol and water-based gels did not reveal any appreciable viscosity changes, with only an approximate 12% and 7% change from day 1 to 30, respectively. It was observed that the IPA systems' viscosity drastically increased over the period, with an approximately 77% change from day 1 to 30. The water and ethanol-based gels also exhibited very similar rheological behaviour over the entire time period with G' dominating G″. The G″ values of the water and ethanol-based gels decreased slightly at the end of day 30 by 10% and 16%, respectively, while the G' values for each sample remained essentially unchanged, increasing only 0.06% for the water-based gel, and increasing 1.4% for the ethanol-based gel. This further confirms the relatively stable gel structures attained. For the isopropyl gel system, the storage modulus of the system exhibited an average percent increase of approximately 16% from day 1 to day 30, but interestingly the loss modulus varied the least amongst all the gel systems, with only a 3% increase. The increase in G' reflects upon the evolution of a more rigid structure by day 30 for the IPA gel. This observation is clearly consistent with the corresponding increase in viscosity observed in the IPA gel. None of the gels tested displayed a consistent pH over the period. The pH of the hydroalcoholic gels was higher than that of the water-based gel for a majority of the period. The greatest fluctuations in pH were observed for the water and IPA gels, even though the water-based gel had one of the most stable rheological profiles out of the samples tested. The water, ethanol, and IPA gels' pH increased approximately 25%, 6%, and 5%, respectively, from day 1 to day 30.The rheological and pH study of the 3 hand sanitizer systems over a 30-day period allowed for rational insights into the plausible reasons responsible for driving the observed rheological changes in these unperturbed systems. For the water-based gel, we hypothesize that the changes observed are due to physical ageing, where the gel structure has evolved over time to eventually progress towards a more stabilized framework structure. The pH of the gel upon formation was on the lower side. Such a lower pH influences the formation of a gel, which is comparatively less swollen and occupies a slightly lesser volume, and thereby points to a much less compacted gel network structure or alternatively, a more fluid structure. If the particles moved around more, the system was not initially in a state of low energy, causing increased particle movement, and in turn, physical ageing. This could be responsible for the development of a physically altered structure over time. The gel structure dynamically attempts to minimize its free energy by becoming more rigid, which has been observed as being manifested in the decrease of both the viscosity and the G″. For the hydroalcoholic gels, we conjecture that ageing observed was a result of chemical ageing, and the alcohol type employed in the preparation is primarily responsible for exhibiting this effect. The polarities of ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol are key to the stabilization of such resultant network structures which get formed because of neutralization. It has been observed in previous studies that with decreasing polarity, there was an increase in the neutralization needed to obtain the development of a structure half as well developed as the final resultant structure. Isopropyl alcohol is a much less polar solvent compared to ethanol and water, and therefore required higher levels of TEA as the base to neutralize the system. We conjecture that the charged TEA cationic species had a greater propensity to get exchanged with bulk solution in the vicinity of the polymer into the bulk solution, and that the pH fluctuation observed indicated a kinetic exchange process over time, causing the viscosity and moduli profiles to increase along with the pH. At this time though, further investigations need to be carried out to truly understand the underlying instability, and thus dynamics for gel systems of this type.L’objectif principal de cet article est d’analyser et de tenter de comprendre la nature des changements rhéologiques observés et la dynamique des gels hydroalcooliques Carbopol NF 980 neutralisés spécifiquement par l’amine triéthanol (TEA), à la fois en fonction du temps et du type d’alcool pour sonder les stabilités temporelles et les effets du vieillissement dans de tels systèmes de gel carbopol. Les changements rhéologiques et la dynamique de 3 systèmes de gel de carbopol ont été observés ; les gels comprenaient un gel à base d’eau, d’éthanol et d’alcool isopropylique. On espère que cette étude éclairera la nature dynamique et l’évolution microstructurale de ces systèmes de gel en réseau, qui ont été maintenus dans des conditions isothermes fermées et laissés complètement imperturbables. Les résultats expérimentaux peuvent fournir les informations nécessaires pour comprendre et proposer des mécanismes plausibles guidant ce comportement dynamique dans les gels hydroalcooliques de carbopol. MÉTHODE: Un rhéomètre TA mécanique a été utilisé pour mesurer la viscosité, le module de stockage et de perte, et un pH-mètre a été utilisé pour déterminer les changements dans chaque échantillon au cours de la période. RÉSULTATS: L’étude des différences dans les structures du gel lors de la préparation initiale a montré que les gels d’éthanol et d’alcool isopropylique (IPA) différaient du gel à base d’eau en termes de viscosité, G′ et G’’ le gel IPA affichant les valeurs de viscosité et de modules les plus faibles pour tous les taux de cisaillement. Les trois systèmes de gel présentaient de fortes caractéristiques d’amincissement par cisaillement et rappelaient le type de contrainte d’élasticité que l’on trouve dans les gels colloïdaux. Le gel à base d’eau par rapport aux gels hydroalcooliques était fortement dominé par G′, l’ampleur de la différence entre G′ et G’’ présentant une importance beaucoup plus élevée. Cela reflète le fait que la formation initiale de la structure de gel à base d’eau possède une structure beaucoup plus rigide avec un composant de module élastique élevé dominant. Cela suggère également que la structure du gel à base d’eau présentait des interactions plus fortes entre les particules de carbopol par rapport à celles des gels hydroalcooliques. Le pH des gels hydroalcooliques était supérieur à celui du gel à base d’eau pendant la majeure partie de la période. Les plus grandes fluctuations de pH ont été observées pour les gels d’eau et d’IPA, même si le gel à base d’eau avait l’un des profils rhéologiques les plus stables parmi les échantillons testés. Le pH de l’eau, de l’éthanol et des gels IPA a augmenté d’environ 25%, 6% et 5%, respectivement, du jour 1 au jour 30.L’étude rhéologique et pH des 3 systèmes de désinfectant pour les mains sur une période de 30 jours a permis d’obtenir des informations rationnelles sur les raisons plausibles responsables des changements rhéologiques observés dans ces systèmes non perturbés. Pour le gel à base d’eau, nous émettons l’hypothèse que les changements observés sont dus au vieillissement physique, où la structure du gel a évolué au fil du temps pour éventuellement progresser vers une structure plus stabilisée. Le pH du gel lors de la formation était dans la partie inférieure. Un pH aussi bas influence la formation d’un gel, qui est comparativement moins gonflé et occupe un volume légèrement inférieur, et indique ainsi une structure de réseau de gel beaucoup moins compactée ou autrement dit, une structure plus fluide. Si les particules se déplaçaient davantage, le système n’était pas initialement dans un état de faible énergie, ce qui entraînait une augmentation du mouvement des particules et, à son tour, un vieillissement physique. Cela pourrait être responsable du développement d’une structure physiquement modifiée au fil du temps. La structure du gel tente dynamiquement de minimiser son énergie libre en devenant plus rigide, ce qui a été observé comme se manifestant par la diminution de la viscosité et du G’’ Pour les gels hydroalcooliques, nous pensons que le vieillissement observé était le résultat d’un vieillissement chimique, et le type d’alcool utilisé dans la préparation est principalement responsable de cet effet. Les polarités de l’alcool éthylique et de l’alcool isopropylique sont essentielles à la stabilisation de ces structures de réseau résultantes qui se forment en raison de la neutralisation. Il a été observé dans des études antérieures qu’avec la diminution de la polarité, il y avait une augmentation de la neutralisation nécessaire pour obtenir le développement d’une structure à moitié aussi bien développée que la structure résultante finale. L’alcool isopropylique est un solvant beaucoup moins polaire que l’éthanol et l’eau, et nécessitait donc des niveaux plus élevés de TEA comme base pour neutraliser le système. Nous pensons que les espèces cationiques TEA chargées avaient une plus grande propension à être échangées avec une solution en vrac à proximité du polymère, dans la solution en vrac, et que la fluctuation du pH observée indiquait un processus d’échange cinétique au fil du temps, entraînant une augmentation des profils de viscosité et de modules avec le pH. À l’heure actuelle, cependant, des recherches supplémentaires doivent être menées pour vraiment comprendre l’instabilité sous-jacente, et donc la dynamique des systèmes de gel de ce type.

Among additive manufacturing, photocuring 3D printing technologies are very relevant because of its high printing speed and high precision. However, the limited performance of photosensitive thermoset polymers is the bottleneck for the application of photocuring 3D printing in some fields, particularly in the biomedical sector. Thus, the development of biodegradable and biocompatible materials is highly desirable and of utmost importance. In this work, a biodegradable and non-cytotoxic thermoset polymer for photocuring 3D printing is reported. It consists of an unsaturated polyesteramide bearing phenylalanine, 2-butene-1,4-diol and fumarate building blocks, which is photocured under UV irradiation using a low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate as crosslinker. The main characteristics of the new thermoset are: (1) very high volumetric and mechanical integrity stabilities, comparable to that of photocured epoxides; (2) very high degradation temperature; (3) very low water absorption capacity; (4) relatively fast enzymatic degradation, reaching 16.5% after 3¿months; and (5) non-cytotoxic response in presence of epithelial cells, even when soluble molecular fragments coming from biodegradation are considered. These properties favor the future utilization of the new polyether-polyesteramide resin in the manufacturing of more sustainable products via 3D printing methods, such as stereolithography, that uses UV sources.

OBJECTIVE To systematically evaluate the effect of microwave disinfection on the dimensional stability of denture base acrylic resins. BACKGROUND Microwave disinfection has been considered as an alternative method for disinfecting complete dentures to help prevent and treat denture stomatitis. However, data on the impact of microwave disinfection on the dimensional stability of acrylic resins are still scarce. METHODS The PubMed/Medline, SCOPUS and EMBASE databases were searched in order to assess articles published in English up to January 2021 (CRD42021212267). We included studies that have assessed the effect of microwave disinfection, on the dimensional stability of acrylic resins, comparing them with negative or positive controls. RESULTS A total of seven in vitro studies were included. The qualitative synthesis demonstrated that, in general, microwave disinfection produced more distortion on the materials than do immersion in sodium hypochlorite, chloride solution, chlorhexidine, and water immersion. However, considering the dimensional stability of the specimens, microwave disinfection at 500 W for 3 minutes, and at 450 W for 5 minutes, produced similar or better outcomes than did control groups. CONCLUSION In general, microwave disinfection promotes changes in the dimensional stability of denture base acrylic resins, and should thus be used with caution. However, microwave disinfection protocols at lower power settings (500 and 450 W) and exposure times (3 and 5 minutes) produces similar or less distortion than chemical disinfection. More studies are still required in order to evaluate the clinical and long-term implications of microwave disinfection.

Photochromism has been applied as an interesting technique in order to improve the anticounterfeiting of commercial commodities. To build up a mechanically reliable anticounterfeiting nanocomposite, it has been vital to enhance the engineering process of the anticounterfeiting material. In the current study, we developed mechanically reliable and highly photoluminescent lanthanide-doped strontium aluminate nanoparticles (LSAN)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) hybrid nanofibres successfully fabricated using an electrospinning technique for anticounterfeiting applications. The produced nanocomposite films exhibited ultraviolet-induced photochromic anticounterfeiting properties. To guarantee the transparency of the LSAN-PAN film, LSAN must be immobilized onto the nanoparticle size to allow better dispersion without aggregation in the polyacrylonitrile matrix. The LSAN-PAN nanofibrous film demonstrated absorbance intensity that exhibited at 354 nm and associated with an emission intensity at 424 nm. The produced LSAN-PAN films demonstrated an enhanced hydrophobicity when increasing the ratio of LSAN, without adversely influencing their native appearance and mechanical performance. Upon excitation with ultraviolet light, the translucent nanofibrous substrates exhibited fast and reversible photochromic activity to greenish-yellow without exhaustion. The nanofibrous films exhibited stretchability, transparency, flexibility, and ultraviolet light-induced photochromism at low cost. The current strategy can be considered as an efficient technique towards the development of various anticounterfeiting materials for a better market with economic and social values.

Purpose To systematically review past studies to determine the effect of various solutions on the color of denture teeth, thus answering the question in regards to which type of denture teeth has the best optical properties after exposure to various solutions. The method of measuring the color of artificial teeth was also evaluated as a secondary outcome. Materials and methods A search of studies that quantitatively investigated the influence of immersion solutions on the color change of denture teeth was conducted. Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed and Scopus databases were searched from 1997 to April 2021. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used during article selection. Data regarding the effect of immersion solutions, accelerated aging and surface treatments on color change were gathered. Methodologies used to assess optical properties were also summarised and compared. The modified CONSORT checklist was used to determine the risk of bias of past studied included in this review. Results 133 studies were identified after removing duplicates. Forty-one studies were selected for full-text analysis, and 35 remaining papers met the inclusion criteria and were therefore included in this systematic review. Thirty-two in vitro studies and 3 in vivo studies were included in the review. All studies reported that immersion in various solutions has a significant influence on the change in color and optical properties of denture teeth. However, the discolouration of denture teeth is still clinically acceptable in most studies. Exposure to various solution also affected the translucency parameter of denture teeth. Most studies also investigated the surface roughness and hardness along with the optical properties, and reported that immersion cycles did not cause changes in surface roughness of denture teeth, while hardness was affected. The optical properties of PMMA denture teeth have been studied extensively, whereas that of CAD/CAM and 3D printed denture teeth is limited. Conclusions Color stability of CAD/CAM milled denture teeth is comparable to conventional PMMA denture teeth. There are contradictory findings in terms of color stability of 3D printed denture teeth as compared to conventional PMMA denture teeth. Staining by coffee is worst among the common beverages and solutions investigated. Denture teeth can show color changes after immersion in staining beverages as early as one week. The degree of discoloration of denture teeth after immersion is time dependent, with the larger extent in the initial phase. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

The composition of the cell culture environment profoundly affects cultured cells. Standard cell culture equipment such as plastic and glass provide extremely stiff surfaces compared to physiological cell environments (i.e., tissue). A growing body of evidence documents the artificial behavior and morphology of cells cultured on supraphysiologically stiff surfaces, such as glass (elastic modulus ca. 70,000 MPA) or plastic (e.g., polystyrol ca. 3300 MPA). Therefore, polymer-based hydrogels are increasingly employed as more physiologically appropriate (100 kPA) supports for 2D or 3D culture. Since multiple properties that influence the cultured cells may be easily adjusted, hydrogels have become versatile tools for studying cells in a more native in vitro environment. Polyacrylamide-based hydrogels can be used as culture substrates for a broad variety of adherent cells and are easy to handle in most downstream biological assays, such as immunohistochemistry or molecular biology methods. We faced, however, serious difficulties with processing high stiffness polyacrylamide-based hydrogels for electron microscopy. To overcome this problem, we developed a simple protocol for embedding and processing cells grown on high stiffness polyacrylamide hydrogels that do not require modifications of routine embedding protocols. © 2022 The Authors. A metabolic cycle-inspired hydrogel which exhibits the biomacromolecule-fueled transient volume phase transition is reported. This hydrogel has the affinity and digestive capacity for a fuel α-poly-L-lysine by incorporating acrylic acid and trypsin. The hydrogel captured fuel and transiently shrank owing to the construction of electrostatic cross-linkages. This process was inherently connected with the digestion of these cross-linkages and the release of oligo-lysine as waste, which induced the reswelling of the hydrogel at equilibrium. The transient volume change of the hydrogel realized the fuel-stimulated transient release of a payload. This study provides a strategy for engineering materials with biomacromolecule-fueled dynamic functions under the out-of-equilibrium condition.

PURPOSE To investigate the stability of mechanical properties during the entire shelf life of chemically-activated bis-acryl interim resin materials stored at ambient laboratory conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four bis-acryl interim resin materials with no explicit recommendation for refrigerator storage were selected (Luxatemp Plus, Visalys Temp, Structur 3, Structur Premium). Following cartridge storage at ambient laboratory conditions in 6-month intervals, 30 specimens (2.0 × 2.0 × 25.0 mm3 ) were prepared in each case and stored in distilled water (37.0 ± 1.0 °C) with 3 different water storage times (2 hours, 24 hours, 7 days). Flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, modulus of toughness, and elastic recovery were determined (3-point bend test). Data were subjected to a three-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) to determine overall significance, followed by a series of separate one-way ANOVAs after data were split, using Tukey and Games-Howell post hoc tests to identify significant differences between groups (α = 0.05). RESULTS While Luxatemp Plus showed no significant decrease for all mechanical properties during the investigated shelf life of 21 months (p > 0.05), Visalys Temp exhibited a continuous decline of the corresponding values (p < 0.05), irrespective of the water storage time. Structur 3 and Structur Premium properties remained almost unchanged during the first 6 months of the examination period. Subsequently, a progressive decrease was observed for flexural strength and modulus of elasticity, while most modulus of toughness and elastic recovery results revealed little alteration. CONCLUSION Depending on the bis-acryl interim resin material, mechanical properties appeared to be susceptible to continuous degradation processes during cartridge storage at ambient conditions, especially towards the end of the material shelf life. For some materials, the chemical stabilization and recommended storage conditions should be revised by the manufacturers to prevent premature aging during shelf life.

PURPOSE To evaluate the refractive precision of three-piece versus one-piece intraocular lenses (IOLs) in eyes with pseudoexfoliation (PXF) and changes in anterior chamber depth (ACD) following cataract surgery. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to systematically review the literature regarding the surface roughness of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) for denture bases, disinfected with different chemical agents and analyse the outcomes of the included studies. BACKGROUND Various chemical disinfection protocols to clean the removable dental prosthesis are reported in the literature, however systematic reviews analysing the outcomes in the surface roughness of the PMMA are lacking. METHODS The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist was used to structure this systematic review. The inclusion criteria were as follows: clinical trials, in vitro studies, studies in English and studies comparing the effects of chemical disinfection products on the surface roughness of PMMA. An electronic search was performed in the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus and Web of Science.; we also conducted a manual search for articles published in specific journals of dental prostheses and dental materials. Objective To investigate the shear bond strength (SBS) of a glass ionomer (GI) cement, an 10-methacryloyloxy-decyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP)-based adhesive resin cement (MDP-based AC), an MDP-based self-adhesive resin cement (MDP-based SAC), an MDP-free self-adhesive resin cement (MDP-free SAC), and a resin-modified GI (RMGI) cement to a 3 mol% yttria-stabilized (3Y-TZP) and a 5 mol% yttria partially stabilized zirconia (5Y-PSZ). Materials and methods Fifty blocks were produced using 3Y-TZP and 5Y-PSZ, assigned to subgroups based on the five cements investigated (n = 10) and luted to cylindrical specimens of the same substrate. Each specimen was loaded in a SBS apparatus to failure. Mean SBS (MPa) values and standard deviations were calculated. Data were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance and Tukey tests (α = .05). Failed specimens were subjected to fractographic analysis. Results MDP-based AC and MDP-based SAC cements displayed the highest SBS values with both the substrates; GI cement showed the lowest. RMGI and MDP-free SAC cements performed better with 3Y-TZP than with 5Y-PSZ. Fractographic analysis revealed only adhesive and mixed failures. Conclusions MDP-based AC and MDP-based SAC cements are suitable for both 3Y-TZP and 5Y-PSZ. MDP-free SAC and RMGI cements are adequate choices for 3Y-TZP, but seem less effective with 5Y-PSZ. Clinical significance MDP-based SACs appear to be as reliable as MDP-based ACs for both 3Y-TZP and 5Y-PSZ cementation. Specifically, for 5Y-PSZ cementation, resin-based MDP-free SACs do not seem to guarantee predictable results in terms of SBS.

The platysma skin flap was used for laryngeal reconstruction after vertical partial laryngectomy to improve the postoperative voice quality of patients with T2 and T3 glottic laryngeal carcinoma. Sixty-nine patients with unilateral T2 and T3 glottic laryngeal carcinoma were included. Forty-six patients received vertical partial laryngectomy, and a platysma skin flap was used for laryngeal reconstruction. The other 23 patients underwent transoral laser microsurgery. Subjective and objective examinations were performed to evaluate laryngeal morphology after the surgery. Acceptable voice quality was achieved for 46 patients who underwent vertical partial laryngectomy. Flap vibrational waves occurred in 19 cases (41.3%). The platysma skin flap is an ideal tissue for the reconstruction of articulation structure in open surgery of T2 and T3 unilateral glottic laryngeal carcinoma.

Development of therapeutic systems to treat glioblastoma, the most common and aggressive brain tumor, belongs to priority tasks in cancer research. We have synthesized colloidally stable magnetic nanoparticles (Dh =336 nm) coated with doxorubicin (Dox) conjugated copolymers of N,N-dimethylacrylamide and either N-acryloylglycine methyl ester or N-acryloylmethyl 6-aminohexanoate. The terminal carboxyl groups of the copolymers were reacted with alendronate by carbodiimide formation. Methyl ester groups were then transferred to hydrazides for binding Dox by a hydrolytically labile hydrazone bond. The polymers were subsequently bound on the magnetic nanoparticles through bisphosphonate terminal groups. Finally, the anticancer effect of the Dox-conjugated particles was investigated using the U-87 glioblastoma cell line in terms of particle internalization and cell viability, which decreased to almost zero at a concentration of 100 μg of particles per ml. These results confirmed that poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide)-coated magnetic nanoparticles can serve as a solid support for Dox delivery to glioblastoma cells.

Platelets crucially facilitate wound healing but can become depleted in traumatic injury or chronic wounds. Previously, our group developed injectable platelet-like particles (PLPs) comprised of highly deformable, ultralow crosslinked pNIPAm microgels (ULCs) coupled to fibrin binding antibodies to treat post-trauma bleeding. PLP fibrin-binding facilitates homing to sites of injury, promotes clot formation, and, due to high particle deformability, induces clot retraction. Clot retraction augments healing by increasing clot stability, enhancing clot stiffness, and promoting cell migration into the wound bed. Because post-traumatic healing is often complicated by infection, the objective of these studies was to develop antimicrobial nanosilver microgel composite PLPs to augment hemostasis, fight infection, and promote healing post-trauma. A key goal was to maintain particle deformability following silver incorporation to preserve PLP-mediated clot retraction. Clot retraction, antimicrobial activity, hemostasis after trauma, and healing after injury were evaluated via confocal microscopy, colony-forming unit assays, a murine liver trauma model, and a murine full-thickness injury model in the absence or presence of infection, respectively. We found that nanosilver incorporation does not affect base PLP performance while bestowing significant antimicrobial activity and enhancing infected wound healing outcomes. Therefore, Ag-PLPs have great promise for treating hemorrhage and improving healing following trauma.

Electroosmotic flow (EOF) has been widely used to transport fluids and samples in micro- and nanofluidic channels for lab-on-a-chip applications. This essentially surface-driven plug-like flow is, however, sensitive to both the fluid and wall properties, of which any inhomogeneity may draw disturbances to the flow and even instabilities. Existing studies on EOF instabilities have been focused primarily upon Newtonian fluids though many of the chemical and biological solutions are actually non-Newtonian. We carry out a systematic experimental investigation of the fluid rheological effects on the elastic instability in the EOF of phosphate buffer-based polymer solutions through T-shaped microchannels. We find that electro-elastic instabilities can be induced in shear thinning polyacrylamide (PAA) and xanthan gum (XG) solutions if the applied direct current voltage is above a threshold value. However, no instabilities are observed in Newtonian or weakly shear thinning viscoelastic fluids including polyethylene oxide (PEO), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and hyaluronic acid (HA) solutions. We also perform a quantitative analysis of the wave parameters for the observed elasto-elastic instabilities.

PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of protective coatings on the surface roughness, contact angle, and Candida albicans (C. albicans) adhesion to polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture base materials. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 560 rectangular heat- and autopolymerized acrylic resin specimens were fabricated and divided into 5 groups (n = 14/group) according to coating agent. Uncoated specimens were used as control. Coating materials were: nano-coat, Optiglaze, nano-silica, or cyanoacrylate. Surface roughness (Ra ) was evaluated using a profilometer. Contact angle measurements were performed using the sessile drop method. C. albicans adhesion was evaluated using direct culture and slide count methods. ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc tests were used for data analysis (α = 0.05). RESULTS Nano-coat and Optiglaze coating of heat-polymerized acrylic significantly decreased Ra (p < 0.001). No significant effect was seen with nano-silica coating while Ra significantly increased with cyanoacrylate (p < 0.001). For autopolymerized acrylic, nano-coat, Optiglaze, and nano-silica coatings significantly decreased Ra in comparison to control group (p < 0.001) while no significant difference was seen between control and cyanoacrylate coating (p = 0.45). In comparison to control group, nano-coat, Optiglaze, and nano-silica coating for both denture base materials significantly decreased contact angle, and C. albicans adhesion (p < 0.001) while cyanoacrylate significantly increased C. albicans adhesion (p = 0.002) with no effect on contact angle for heat- (p = 1.00) and autopolymerized resins (p = 0.83). CONCLUSION Coating of removable prosthesis with nano-coat, Optiglaze, or nano-silica is an effective method to reduce C. albicans adhesion.

According to the intrinsic plasticity of stem cells, controlling their fate is a critical issue in cell-based therapies. Recently, a growing body of evidence has suggested that substrate stiffness can affect the fate decisions of various stem cells. Epidermal neural crest stem cells as one of the main neural crest cell derivatives hold great promise for cell therapies due to presenting a high level of plasticity. This study was conducted to define the influence of substrate stiffness on the lineage commitment of these cells. The use of laccases applied in bioremediation processes has been increasingly studied, given the urgent need to overcome the environmental problems caused by emerging contaminants. It is known that immobilized enzymes have better operational stability under reaction conditions, allowing for greater applicability. However, given the lack of commercially available immobilized laccases, the search for immobilization materials and methods continues to gain effort. The use of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) to immobilize enzymes has been investigated since it is a low-cost material and can be modified and functionalized to well interact with the enzyme. This polymer can be used with different morphologies such as fibers, beads, and core-shell, presenting as an easily applicable alternative. This review presents the missing link between polymer and enzyme through an overview of PAN's current use as support for laccase immobilization and polymer functionalization methods, considering the importance of immobilized laccases in several industrial sectors.

OBJECTIVE Defects/bubbles can occur during the manufacture of bis-acryl resin provisional restorations, requiring repair or new prosthesis. This study evaluated the color stability of bis-acryl resin specimens repaired, aging, and immersioned in beverages. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighty disks were made of bis-acryl resin. Twenty disks were not repaired (BCR), 20 disks were repaired with the same bis-acryl resin (BCR-BCR), 20 disks were repaired with flowable resin (BCR-FR), and 20 disks received an adhesive layer prior to flowable resin repair (BCR-AFR). Coordinates L*a*b* were obtained. Ten disks from each group were thermocycled (5000 cycles) and the others were immersed in coffee with sugar (n = 5) and cola-based soft drinks (n = 5) for 7 days. Color, lightness, chroma, and hue differences were calculated by the CIEDE2000 formula, analyzed by two-way analysis of variance. Multiple comparisons were made with the Tukey's HSD test (α = .05). Resin composite-based dental materials can leach certain components into the oral environment, causing potentially harmful gingival biological effect. Gingival tissue is a rich source of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) that is easily accessible, and can be used as a complementary approach for the investigation of dental material biocompatibility. Using gingival MSCs (gMSCs), the present study aimed to investigate the cytotoxicity of two classes of restorative dental materials (ormocers and resin composites) used to restore class II cavities close to the gingival margin, in addition to analyzing the leached compounds from these resin composite-based materials. Functionality assays (Colony-forming unit, migratory potential, and proliferation assays) and a viability assay (MTT) were employed. Cells' aspect was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Leached monomers were also quantitated using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The cytotoxicity of the biomaterials was highlighted by impaired functionality and diminished viability of gMSCs. Despite being variants of the same commercial material, the two ormocers behaved differently one material having a more negative impact on cell functionality than the other. Cells appeared to attach well to all materials. Main monomer molecules were mostly released by the tested materials. For all samples, an increased elution of monomers was recorded in artificial saliva as compared with culture medium. One composite material has released nearly eight times more urethane dimetacrylate in artificial saliva than in culture medium. Significantly lower gMSC viability scores were recorded for all the investigated samples in comparison with the control.

PURPOSE To investigate the influence of nonthermal plasma (NTP) treatment on the tensile bond strength between heat-polymerized acrylic resin for ocular prostheses and silicone reliner, with and without the use of an adhesive primer. MATERIALS AND METHODS One-hundred and sixty-four acrylic resin specimens were fabricated and randomly distributed into four groups according to the type of surface treatment: Sofreliner Primer, NTP, Sofreliner Primer + NTP, and NTP + Sofreliner Primer. Two specimens interposed with relining material (Sofreliner) formed one test sample to perform the tensile bond strength tests, before (initial) and after storage (final) in saline solution (37°C, 90 days, n = 10). Surface characterization was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The failure type was classified as cohesive, adhesive, or mixed. The data were analyzed statistically using the two-way ANOVA and Tukey test, as well as the chi-squared test (α = 0.05), Bonferroni correction (α = 0.005), and Spearman correlation coefficient (α = 0.05). RESULTS The SEM and EDS analyses showed the presence of a thin, homogenous organic film in the groups treated with NTP. The NTP + Sofreliner Primer group presented the largest bond strength mean values in the initial period (p < 0.05). Sofreliner Primer and NTP + Sofreliner Primer groups presented the first and second largest tensile bond strength mean values in the final period (p < 0.05), respectively. NTP + Sofreliner Primer group also had the largest number of cohesive (70%, initial) and mixed (90%, final) failures. CONCLUSIONS The NTP treatment performed before the primer application enhanced the bond between the acrylic resin ocular prosthesis and the Sofreliner silicone-based reliner, even after 90 days of immersion in saline solution.

Unlike other oral care products, there are limited technologies in the denture adhesive category with the majority based on polymethyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride (PVM/MA) polymer. Carbomer‐based denture adhesives are less well studied, and there are few clinical studies directly comparing performance of denture adhesives based on different technologies. This single‐centre, randomised, three‐treatment, three‐period, examiner‐blind, crossover study compared a carbomer‐based denture adhesive (Test adhesive) with a PVM/MA‐based adhesive (Reference adhesive) and no adhesive using incisal bite force measurements (area over baseline over 12 hr; AOB0–12) in participants with a well‐made and at least moderately well‐fitting complete maxillary denture. Eligible participants were randomised to a treatment sequence and bit on a force transducer with increasing force until their maxillary denture dislodged. This procedure was performed prior to treatment application (baseline) and at 0.5, 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 hr following application. The integration of molecularly crowded microenvironments into membrane‐enclosed protocell models represents a step towards more realistic representations of cellular structure and organization. Herein, the membrane diffusion‐mediated nucleation of either negatively or positively charged coacervate microdroplets within the aqueous lumen of individual proteinosomes is used to prepare nested hybrid protocells with spatially organized and chemically coupled enzyme activities. The location and reconfiguration of the entrapped droplets are regulated by tuning the electrostatic interactions between the encapsulated coacervate and surrounding negatively charged proteinosome membrane. As a consequence, alternative modes of a cascade reaction involving membrane‐ and coacervate‐segregated enzymes can be implemented within the coacervate‐in‐proteinosome protocells.

Local delivery of viral vectors can enhance the efficacy of therapies by selectively affecting necessary tissues and reducing the required vector dose. Pluronic F127 is a thermosensitive polymer that undergoes a solution-gelation (sol-gel) transition as temperature increases and can deliver vectors without damaging them. While pluronics can be spread over large areas, such as the surface of an organ, prior to gelation, they lack sufficient adhesivity to remain attached to some tissues, such as the surface of the heart or mucosal surfaces. Here, we utilized blends of pluronic F127 and polycarbophil (PCB), a mucoadhesive agent, to provide the necessary adhesivity for local delivery of viral vectors to the cardiac muscle. The effects of PCB concentration on adhesive properties, sol-gel temperature transition and cytocompatibility were evaluated. Rheological studies showed that PCB decreased the sol-gel transition temperature at concentrations greater than 1%, and increased the adhesive properties of the gel. Furthermore, these gels were able to deliver viral vectors and transduce cells in vitro and in vivo in a neonatal mouse apical resection model. These gels could be a useful platform for delivering viral vectors over the surface of organs where increased adhesivity is required.

Reconstruction of the bladder wall plays an important role in improving its function in patients with urinary bladder dysfunction. Tissue engineering has been trying to introduce biocompatible nanofibers as scaffolds for bladder wall matrix substitutes. In this study a composite nanofibrous scaffold was fabricated from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) blend by electrospinning method and then its morphological and mechanical characteristics was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), tensile, and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays. Then smooth muscle cell (SMC) differentiation supportive capacity of PAN-PEO nanofibers was investigated by culturing of human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AT-MSCs) on this scaffold and then its differentiation potential in different groups was investigated using SMC-related gene and protein markers. SEM and MTT results demonstrated that PAN-PEO supported AT-MSCs attachment, growth and proliferation, especially at early times after cell seeding. The obtained results from real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction revealed that collagen-I-α1, collagen-III-α1, α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), calponin1, SM22α, caldesmon1, elastin, and myosin heavy chain (MHC) genes were expressed in AT-MSCs cultured on PAN-PEO significantly higher than those stem cells that cultured on the culture plate as a control. In addition α-SMA and MHC proteins were also expressed in AT-MSCs cultured on PAN-PEO significantly higher than control. According to the results PAN-PEO nanofibrous scaffold showed a positive AT-MSCs-seeded PAN-PEO has a great promising potential to use in bladder tissue engineering applications.

Electrospun composite scaffolds show high ability to be used in regenerative medicine and drug delivery, due to the nanofibrous structure and high surface area to volume ratio. In this study, we used nanofibrous scaffolds fabricated by chitosan (CS), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), carbopol, and polycaprolactone using a dual electrospinning technique while curcumin (Cur) incorporated inside of the CS/PVA fibers. Scaffolds were fully characterized via scanning electron microscopy, water contact angle, tensile measurement, hydration, protein adsorption, and wrinkled tests. Furthermore, viability of the buccal fat pad-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BFP-MSCs) was also investigated using MTT assay for up to 14 days while cultured on these scaffolds. Cell cycle assay was also performed to more detailed evaluation of the stem cells growth when grown on scaffolds (with and without Cur) compared with the culture plate. Results demonstrated that Cur loaded nanofibrous scaffold had more suitable capability for water absorption and mechanical properties compared with the scaffold without Cur and it could also support the stem cells viability and proliferation. Cur release profile showed a decreasing effect on BFP-MSCs viability in the initial stage, but it showed a positive effect on stem cell viability in a long-term manner. In general, the results indicated that this nanofibrous scaffold has great potential as a delivery of the Cur and BFP-MSCs simultaneously, and so holds the promising potential for use in various regenerative medicine applications.

Films that can form bioadhesive hydrogels on wet biotissues absorbing blood or body fluids are useful for medical devices such as hemostats, adhesion barriers, wound dressings, and drug release devices. We focused on a hydrogen-bonding polymer complex consisting of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP). PAA is known as a tissue-adhesive polymer. However, simple mixing of aqueous PAA and PVP solutions resulted in the formation of an insoluble nonadhesive precipitate. We developed a novel solid/solution interface complexation method to afford a PAA/PVP complex that forms a strongly bioadhesive hydrogel with low cytotoxicity. The complex hydrogel can be slowly dissociated and dissolved in the body. The formation of the complexes as well as their swelling and degradation behavior depended strongly on the molecular weights and cross-linking densities of the component polymers. When the complex film was applied to a clipped incised jugular vein of a rat, it immediately formed a hydrogel and closed the incision. After removal of the clip, blood flowed through the vessel without any leakage. Application of the complex film to the surface of an incised mouse liver resulted in firm adhesion and the hemorrhage was effectively stopped. Such bioadhesive and biodissolvable materials consisting of low-toxicity synthetic polymers have high potential for implantable medical devices.

Full-arch implant-supported restorations using a metal-acrylic resin design have had a high success rate but are also associated with frequent technical complications including framework misfit due to casting errors, debonding of denture teeth, and fracture of the acrylic from the metal framework. This clinical report describes a case of maxillary and mandibular full-arch implant-supported rehabilitation associated with technical and biological complications and use of digital technology for fabricating monolithic restorations. The use of a bio-functional try-in and its subsequent use as a conversion prosthesis for fabricating a master cast is described. The use of the patient's existing metal bar to fabricate a retread type prosthesis is also described along with using digital technology for fabricating a new metal bar and a monolithic type of restoration. The integration of digital and conventional workflows to obtain an increased level of accuracy and simplicity is also discussed.

Developing a small-diameter vascular graft with a satisfactory performance in terms of mechanical and biological properties remains a challenging issue because of comprehensive requirements from clinical applications. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogels exhibit many desirable characteristics for small-diameter vascular grafts because of their tunable mechanical properties, especially high compliance. However, poor cells adhesion hinders their application for endothelialization in situ. Therefore, in the present work, polydopamine (PDA) and tetrapeptide Arg-Glu-Asp-Val (REDV) were used to functionalize the hydrogels surface and improve cells adhesion. A series of characterizations were systematically conducted to examine the applicability of coated hydrogels to small-diameter vascular grafts. Results showed that bare and coated hydrogels have appropriate structural stability, and no significant differences in tensile properties could be found after being coated with PDA or PDA-REDV. The hydrophilicity of the hydrogels decreased with the coatings of PDA and especially PDA-REDV to improve protein adsorption, porcine iliac artery endothelial cells (PIECs) adhesion, viability, proliferation, and spreading on the hydrogels. Lower hemolysis percentages and higher blood clotting index values were attained for the hydrogels, suggesting their satisfactory hemocompatibility. A new composite nanofiber of polyacrylonitrile doped with copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate metal-organic framework was fabricated by electrospinning and used as a microsorbent in the solid-phase extraction of trace tetracycline. The chemical structure of the adsorbent was studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis, and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda pore size and volume analysis techniques. The significant parameters of the method including desorption solvent kind and volume, adsorbent mass, pH, and salt percentage were investigated. At the optimized conditions, the linear range was 8-1000 μg/L with a determination coefficient (R2 ) of 0.9954. The limits of detection and quantification were 2.40 and 8.00 μg/L, respectively. The inter- and intraday precisions were 4.7 and 3.4%, respectively. The developed extraction method was followed by high-performance liquid chromatography and applied for the determination of tetracycline in human blood plasma, and good relative recoveries (97.3-104.5%) were obtained.

In this study, for the first time, calcium oxide (CaO)/polylactic acid nanoscaffolds were synthesized by co-precipitation assistant reverse micelles method. The physical and chemical (physicochemical) properties of the structures as dental resin composites were also studied. Nanocomposite materials as primary and basic dental compounds can be conveniently applied as dental filling materials with a high esthetic quality. In this research nanoscaffolds act as a bed for nanoparticles and improve the mechanical and chemical (mechanochemical) properties, CaO nanoparticles were loading in polylactic acid nanoscaffold as a bioactivity polymer for usage in the dental resin composites. Mechanical properties of the dental resin composite containing CaO/polylactic acid nanoscaffold were calculated: the flexural strength (137.2 MPa), modulus (12.9GPa) and compressive strength (344.2 MPa). Although photothermal therapy (PTT) can effectively eliminate tumors, the normal tissues near tumors are inevitably damaged by heat and infected by bacteria, which greatly limits the therapeutic effect. To understand structural variation for personal genomics, an extensive ensemble of large DNA molecules will be required to span large structural variations. Nanocoding, a whole-genome analysis platform, can analyze large DNA molecules for the construction of physical restriction maps of entire genomes. However, handling of large DNA is difficult and a system is needed to concentrate large DNA molecules, while keeping the molecules intact. Insert technology was developed to protect large DNA molecules during routine cell lysis and molecular biology techniques. However, eluting and concentrating DNA molecules has been difficult in the past. Utilizing 3D printed mesofluidic device, a proof of principle system was developed to elute and concentrate lambda DNA molecules at the interface between a solution and a poly-acrylamide roadblock. The matrix allowed buffer solution to move through the pores in the matrix; however, it slowed down the progression of DNA in the matrix, since the molecules were so large and the pore size was small. Using fluorescence intensity of the insert, 84% of DNA was eluted from the insert and 45% of DNA was recovered in solution from the eluted DNA. DNA recovered was digested with a restriction enzyme to determine that the DNA molecules remained full length during the elution and concentration of DNA.

Insulator-based dielectrophoresis has to date been almost entirely restricted to Newtonian fluids despite the fact that many of the chemical and biological fluids exhibit non-Newtonian characteristics. We present herein an experimental study of the fluid rheological effects on the electroosmotic flow of four types of polymer solutions, i.e., 2000 ppm xanthan gum (XG), 5% polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), 3000 ppm polyethylene oxide (PEO), and 200 ppm polyacrylamide (PAA) solutions, through a constriction microchannel under DC electric fields of up to 400 V/cm. We find using particle streakline imaging that the fluid elasticity does not change significantly the electroosmotic flow pattern of weakly shear-thinning PVP and PEO solutions from that of a Newtonian solution. In contrast, the fluid shear-thinning causes multiple pairs of flow circulations in the weakly elastic XG solution, leading to a central jet with a significantly enhanced speed from before to after the channel constriction. These flow vortices are, however, suppressed in the strongly viscoelastic and shear-thinning PAA solution.

AIMS Bulking agents are a minimally invasive treatment option for women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) or stress-predominant mixed urinary incontinence (MUI). The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term efficacy and safety following treatment with Bulkamid as a primary procedure for SUI or stress-predominant MUI. METHODS This was an Institutional Review Board-approved single-center retrospective study of female patients with SUI or stress-predominant MUI who had undergone injection with Bulkamid since 2005 and had completed 7 years of follow up. The primary endpoint was patient satisfaction measured on a four-point scale as cured, improved, unchanged, or worse. Secondary outcomes included the number of incontinence pads used, International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-UI SF) scores, Visual Analog Scale Quality of Life (VAS QoL), reinjection rates, and perioperative and postoperative complications. RESULTS A total of 1,200 patients were treated with Bulkamid since 2005 and of these, 388 (32.3%) had completed 7 years of follow-up. A total of 67.1% of the patients reported feeling cured or improved if Bulkamid was a primary procedure, 11.1% reported no change, and 2.3% reported worsening of incontinence. A total of 19.5% of patients received a subsequent other incontinence procedure. The ICIQ-UI SF was reduced by 8.6 points. VAS QoL improved by a mean of 4.3 points. Postoperative complications were transient. Prolonged bladder emptying time was reported in 15.3% of patients and urinary tract infection in 3.5%. CONCLUSIONS Bulkamid injections are an effective and safe first-line treatment option for women with SUI or stress-predominant MUI providing durable outcomes at 7 years.

Prostate cancer is among the leading causes of death worldwide because its metastatic form is a deadly disease. Therefore, the development of new chemotherapeutics is of immense importance. Nanoparticle technology seems to provide diverse options in this regard. Therefore, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) loaded with etoposide were prepared in small sizes (57 nm) and with 3.5% drug content to improve the efficiency of etoposide in prostate cancer therapy. Sustained release of the drug was achieved, which found to be sensitive to low pH and high temperature. The anti-growth activity of SPION-PNIPAM-Etoposide formulation against metastatic prostate cancer cells (PC-3, LNCaP) were investigated by SRB assay, then confirmed by ATP assay. Mode of cell death was evaluated by using flow cytometry analyses. A significant improvement of nanoformulated drug was observed at 5-10 μg/ml doses of the drug in both cell lines. More importantly, this formulation enhanced the cytotoxic effect of etoposide on PC-3 cells, which is considered more resistant to etoposide than LNCaP, and reduced the IC 50 by 55% reaching to 4.5 μg drug/ml, which is a very significant improvement in the literature. It was clearly shown that nanoformulated drug provided about 3 fold increases in caspase-dependent early apoptotic cells in PC-3 cells. The novel formulation seems to successfully cause cell death of especially PC-3 metastatic prostate cancer cells. PURPOSE Metal removable partial dentures (RPDs) are often considered long-term treatment options for partially edentulous patients, while acrylic resin RPDs are considered interim treatments. The aim of this review was to compare metal and acrylic resin RPDs regarding patient-reported outcomes for partially edentulous individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and Web of Science) were systematically searched for observational studies and randomized controlled trials comparing patient-reported outcomes between metal and acrylic resin RPDs. The primary outcome was patient satisfaction. Included studies were assessed for risk of bias using the Cochrane risk of bias in nonrandomized studies of interventions tool (ROBINS-I) and the Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias Tool for Randomized Controlled Trials. The level of evidence was evaluated using Oxford Center for Evidence-based Medicine tool. A random-effects model was used to analyze the data. RESULTS A total of 15 studies were included in the systematic review; 10 in the meta-analysis. The pooled effect size for patient satisfaction and oral health-related quality of life showed no statistical significant difference between metal and acrylic resin dentures (0.22, 95% confidence interval -0.01, 0.45, p = 0.06; 1.45, 95% confidence interval -2.43, 5.33, p = 0.46, respectively). Compliance with using RPDs was significantly higher in patients with metal compared to patients with acrylic resin dentures (pooled odds ratio = 0.57, 95% confidence interval 0.45, 0.73, p < 0.001). Most studies had critical to serious risk of bias and low level of evidence. CONCLUSIONS The reviewed studies showed that there was no significant difference between metal and acrylic resin RPDs in patient satisfaction and oral health-related quality of life. Metal dentures were associated with higher patient compliance rates and were preferred more by patients compared to acrylic resin dentures. However, the reviewed studies had low levels of evidence and therefore, high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to conclusively address the question of this review.

Pharmaceutical amorphous solid dispersions, a multicomponent system prepared by dispersing drug substances into polymeric matrix via thermal and mechanical processes, represent a major platform to deliver the poorly water-soluble drug. Microscopic properties of drug-polymer contacts play mechanistic roles in manipulating long-term physical stability as well as dissolution profiles. Although solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance has been utilized as an indispensable tool to probe structural details, previous studies are limited to ex situ characterizations. Our work provides likely the first documented example to investigate comelting of ketoconazole and polyacrylic acid, as a model system, in an in situ manner. Their physical mixture is melted and mixed in the solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance rotor under magic angle spinning at up to approximately 400 K. Critical structural events of molecular miscibility and interaction have been successfully identified. These results design and evaluate the instrumental and experimental protocols for real-time characterizations of the comelting of pharmaceutical materials.

Recent advancements in biochemical sciences have facilitated researchers to explore the structure and function of macro molecules in a cell. PAGE is one of the most favored and adapted laboratory techniques. Due to its simple and economical procedures, several variants or new modifications are routinely observed in the basic electrophoresis technique that comprises gel casting, electrophoresis, staining, and imaging process which consequently necessitates additional apparatuses/components in the laboratory. Operation of these additional apparatuses/components lengthens the pre- and postelectrophoresis procedures involving many intermittent tedious and time-consuming steps. A universal apparatus that can facilitate all such associated techniques is lacking and is of utmost importance for fast and effective results. An apparatus that can perform synchronized action of slab gel casting (16 × 16 cm), electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), dye staining (Coomassie), and imaging (scanning) techniques with real-time monitoring through sensor technology is described in this article. The estimated cost (∼$150) of fabrication of the apparatus is very economical and simple assembly procedure of the main apparatus can be completed within ∼30 min after fabrication.

Background More research is needed on the study of new materials for fixed prosthetic implant-supported rehabilitations. Purpose The purpose of this study was to report the short-term outcome of full-arch implant-supported fixed hybrid polyetheretherketone (PEEK)-acrylic resin prostheses and the all-on-four concept. Materials and methods This prospective cohort clinical study included 37 patients (29 women, eight men) with an average age of 60 years (range: 38-78 years) with 49 full-arch hybrid PEEK-acrylic resin prosthesis supported by implants through the all-on-four concept. Primary outcome measures were prosthetic survival. Results Two patients with two maxillary prostheses were lost to follow-up. One patient with a double full-arch rehabilitation fractured the mandibular PEEK framework, rendering a 98% prosthetic survival rate. No implants were lost. The average (SD) marginal bone remodeling after 1 year of follow-up was 0.37 mm (0.58 mm). Technical complications concerning the veneer adhesion occurred in six patients and were resolved in all patients (with exception of the patient with prosthetic failure) through the creation of mechanical retentions and changing the bonding primer. Mechanical complications occurred in three patients and five prostheses consisting in prosthetic screw loosening (n = 2 patients) and fracture of the acrylic resin teeth (the patient with a prosthetic failure). Conclusions Within the limitations of this study, the results suggest that hybrid polymer (PEEK)-acrylic resin prostheses supported by implants for full-arch rehabilitation may represent a valid treatment option, still requiring longer-term validation.

Protein-polymer microcapsules have attracted much attention, due to their special features and potential in biological use. How to make the most of this type of bio-abiotic hybrid material is an intriguing question. Nevertheless, several unsatisfactory technical issues significantly limited the application of these materials. For instance, introducing various biomolecules and crosslinking for the capsules remains challenging and problematic. In this report, recombinant mCherry protein was covalently linked with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) to form amphiphilic protein-polymer conjugates, which assembled into microcapsules. These microcapsules are thermoresistant and can be used in the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In this setting, the reactant molecules can be readily and easily introduced into the microcapsules, and crosslinking and water-oil phase transition are not necessary. This protein-polymer microcapsule PCR system has potential in various biological applications.

Using covalent capture, a high yielding selective mono-functionalization of heptakis-[6-deoxy-6-(2-aminoethylsulfanyl)]-β-CD with a 5-mercaptopentyl functional group has been achieved. Here, we demonstrate the immobilization of the mono-thiol functionalized β-CD on PEGA resin via a disulfide bond, enabling solid-phase elaboration of the remaining six primary amines. To showcase the potential of this method, the amines were elaborated to tripeptides through standard Fmoc-peptide chemistry. A small library of CD-tripeptide conjugates was generated which, when reduced from the solid support, could be tagged at the released thiol with an environmentally sensitive fluorophore. The resulting library of sensors showed potential for the differential sensing of various bile salts. The described methodology provides a rapid and versatile route to synthesize highly functionalized libraries of CD derivatives that may be tailored towards applications in sensing, catalysis, and multivalent displays.
