INTRODUCTION Recent computer-guided dynamic navigation systems promise a novel training approach for implant surgery. This study aimed to examine learning progress in placement of dental implants among dental students using dynamic navigation on a simulation model. MATERIALS AND METHODS Senior students with no implant placement experience were randomly assigned five implant placement attempts involving either three maxillary or four mandibular implants distributed in the anterior/posterior, and left/right segments. Implant placement was planned using a Navident Dynamic Guidance system. Surgical time was recorded. Horizontal, vertical and angulation discrepancies between the planned and placed implant positions were measured using superimposed CBCT scans. Data were analysed with repeated measures regression with Tukey's adjusted pairwise comparisons (α = 0.05). Purpose To evaluate esthetic perceptions based on tooth exposure when smiling of patients wearing complete dentures by evaluators in different age groups. Materials and Methods Alterations were made to a front view photograph of a smiling patient wearing complete maxillary and mandibular dentures. Alterations in the smile line were simulated to increase or decrease tooth exposure (increments of 0.5 mm). For this purpose, image manipulation software was used. After manipulation, images were printed on photo paper, attached to a questionnaire, and distributed to individuals in three age groups (n = 150). To evaluate the esthetic perception for each image, a visual analog scale was used, with 0 representing least attractive, 5 representing attractive, and 10 representing very attractive. Differences between examiners were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test. All statistical analyses were performed with a degree of confidence of 95%. Results Two evaluators did not observe any differences between images. The images given the best and worst scores were E and O (alterations of 2 and 7 mm), respectively, in the 15- to 19-year-old group, B and O (alterations of 0.5 and 7 mm), respectively, in the 35- to 44-year-old group, and A and M (no alteration and 6 mm alteration), respectively, in the 65- to 74-year-old group. When the images were presented together (images 1 and 2), the unaltered image was selected by individuals of different age groups as the best, and the image with a change of 7 mm was selected as the worst. Conclusion In this study, complete dental prostheses with smile lines that coincided with the cervical margins of the anterior teeth were the most acceptable. Less exposure of the maxillary teeth when smiling corresponded with decreased attractiveness.

The aim of this study was to examine whether vigabatrin treatment had caused visual field defects (VFDs) in children of school age who had received the drug in infancy.In total, 35 children (14 males, 21 females; median age 11y, SD 3.4y, range 8-23y) were examined by static Humphrey perimetry, Goldmann kinetic perimetry, or Octopus perimetry. The aetiologies of infantile spasms identified were tuberous sclerosis (n=10), other symptomatic causes (n=3), or cryptogenic (n=22).Typical vigabatrin-attributed VFDs were found in 11 out of 32 (34%) children: in one out of 11 children (9%) who received vigabatrin for1 year (group 1), in three out of 10 children (30%) who received vigabatrin for 12 to 24 months (group 2), and in seven out of 11 children (63%) who received vigabatrin treatment for longer than 2 years (group 3). VFDs were mild in five and severe in six children. Patients with tuberous sclerosis were at higher risk of VFDs (six out of 10 children). The mean cumulative doses of vigabatrin were 140.5, 758.8, and 2712g in group 1, 2, and 3, respectively.VFDs were found in 34% of the cohort of children in this study. The rate of VFD increased from 9% to 63% as duration of treatment increased. The results of this study showed that the risk-benefit ratio should always be considered when using vigabatrin.

Previous exploratory analyses suggest that the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) consists of four correlated dimensions and that individual differences in OHIP total scores reflect an underlying higher-order factor. The aim of this report is to corroborate these findings in the Dimensions of Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (DOQ) Project, an international study of general population subjects and prosthodontic patients. Using the project's Validation Sample (n = 5022), we conducted confirmatory factor analyses in a sample of 4993 subjects with sufficiently complete data. In particular, we compared the psychometric performance of three models: a unidimensional model, a four-factor model and a bifactor model that included one general factor and four group factors. Using model-fit criteria and factor interpretability as guides, the four-factor model was deemed best in terms of strong item loadings, model fit (RMSEA = 0·05, CFI = 0·99) and interpretability. These results corroborate our previous findings that four highly correlated factors - which we have named Oral Function, Oro-facial Pain, Oro-facial Appearance and Psychosocial Impact - can be reliably extracted from the OHIP item pool. However, the good fit of the unidimensional model and the high interfactor correlations in the four-factor solution suggest that OHRQoL can also be sufficiently described with one score.

This research article is focused on the recognition interaction of a new host naphtho-21-crown-7 and four secondary dialkylammonium salts. In acetone, they can form 1:1 host-guest complexes which belong to slow-exchange systems. We also found the differences of binding affinity and binding selectivity between the host and its complementary guest moieties, which could be ascribed to the aromatic π-π stacking effect and the acidity increase of N-methylene and ammonium hydrogens due to the increasing electron withdrawing ability from butyl to methoxyphenyl to phenyl to p-cyanophenyl substituents in the recognition motif.

Recent study has shown that mutations in the alpha-II-spectrin (SPTAN1) gene cause early onset intractable seizures, severe developmental delay, diffuse hypomyelination, and widespread brain atrophy. We report a Slovene girl with hypotonia, lack of visual attention, early onset epileptic encephalopathy, and severe developmental delay. The patient presented with segmental myoclonic jerks at the age of 6 weeks, and infantile spasms at the age of 3.5 months. Her seizures were resistant to treatment. Multiple electroencephalography recordings showed deterioration of the background activity, followed by multifocal abnormalities before progressing to hypsarrhythmia. Ophthalmologic examination revealed bilateral dysplastic, coloboma-like optic discs. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed diffusely reduced white matter and brainstem volumes with hypomyelination. A de novo heterozygous in-frame deletion was detected in SPTAN1: c.6619_6621delGAG (p.E2270del). This report supports the causative relationship between SPTAN1 mutations and early onset intractable seizures with severe hypomyelination and widespread brain volume reduction. Coloboma-like optic discs might be an additional feature observed in patients with SPTAN1 mutations.

The hypothesis of this study was that colonizers in decaying leaf litter prefer native species (Erythrina verna) to exotic ones (Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Protium heptaphyllum). Therefore, native species are expected to show higher breakdown rates, increased biomass, richness and density of invertebrate species, and increased biomass of decomposer fungi. Breakdown of leaf litter from these three species was assessed in an Atlantic Rain Forest stream. Four samples were collected during a period of 90 days and washed on a sieve to separate the invertebrates. Then, a series of leaf disks were cut to determine ash-free dry mass and fungal biomass, and the remaining material was oven-dried to determine the dry weight. Eucalyptus camaldulensis and E. verna showed higher breakdown rates than P. heptaphyllum, due to differences in leaf physical and chemical characteristics. The harder detritus (P. heptaphyllum) broke down more slowly than detritus with high concentrations of labile compounds (E. camaldulensis). The density of the invertebrates associated with detritus increased with time. There were no differences in density, taxonomic richness or biomass of invertebrates among the leaf types, which indicated that the invertebrates did not distinguish between exotic and native detritus. Fungal colonization varied among samples; E. camaldulensis showed the lowest ergosterol concentrations, mainly due to a high concentration of total phenolics. The detritus with the highest hardness value was colonized most slowly by fungi. These results showed that leaf breakdown in Atlantic Rain Forest streams could be affected either by changes in riparian vegetation, or by becoming more savanna-like process due to climate change.

doi: 10.1111/j.1741-2358.2011.00592.x A 3-year longitudinal study of quality-of-life outcomes of elderly patients with implant- and tooth-supported fixed partial dentures in posterior dental regions Background: Clinical studies have mainly been focused on oral health-related quality-of-life (OHRQoL) outcomes of removable dentures. Objective: To evaluate therapy of elderly patients with implant-supported fixed partial dentures (IFPD) and tooth-supported fixed partial dentures (FPD) in the posterior dental regions. Patients and methods: The OHIP49 was used to measure OHRQoL in 64 patients with IFPD and 38 patients with FPD, before, 3 weeks and 3 years after rehabilitation. A control group (CG) consisted of 62 individuals. Results: The Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP) follow-up scores of the patients with FPD and the patients with IFPD were significantly smaller in comparison with the baseline scores (p 60) showed equal improvement of the OHRQoL. In the IFPD group, patients older than 60 years showed better improvement (p 0.05). Conclusion: The FPD and the IFPD treatment showed significant improvement of OHRQoL. The FPD treatment improved OHRQoL equally in both age groups, while the IFPD treatment improved OHRQoL better in older patients.

Dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA) is a dominant hereditary neurodegenerative disorder caused by the expansion of a poly-glutamine (poly-Q) repeat in Atrophin-1 protein. Ectopic expression of a poly-Q expanded human Atrophin-1 is sufficient to induce DRPLA phenotypes in mice. However, it is still unclear whether the dominant effect of poly-Q expansion is due to the functional interference with wild-type Atrophin-1 proteins, which exist in both patients and transgenic mice. Here we report the generation and analysis of an Atrophin-1 targeting allele that expresses a truncated protein lacking both the poly-Q repeat and following C-terminal peptides. Homozygous mutants exhibit growth retardation and progressive male infertility, but no obvious signs of neurodegeneration. Moreover, the mutant allele neither blocked nor enhanced the neurodegenerative phenotypes caused by a poly-Q expanded transgene. These results support the model that poly-Q expanded Atrophin-1 proteins cause DRPLA in a manner independent of any functional interaction with wild-type Atrophin-1 proteins.

This work emerged from the following observation: usual search procedures for octrees start from the root to retrieve the data stored at the leaves. But as the leaves are the farthest nodes to the root, why start from the root? With usual octree representations, there is no other way to access a leaf. However, hashed octrees allow direct access to any node, given its position in space and its depth in the octree. Search procedures take the position as an input, but the depth remains unknown. This work proposes to estimate the depth of an arbitrary node through a statistical optimization of the average cost of search procedures. As the highest costs of these algorithms are obtained when starting from the root, this method improves on both the memory footprint by the use of hashed octrees, and execution time through the proposed optimization.

A simple and efficient copper-catalyzed method for the synthesis of aromatic carboxylic acids in moderate to high yields with great functional-group compatibility in the substrates has been developed. The new method uses readily available arylboronic acids and acetyl acetate as the starting materials and inexpensive CuI as the catalyst.

To assess the correlation between hypsarrhythmia duration and mental outcome in infantile spasms (IS) the medical records of 48 infants with IS were reviewed retrospectively and psychological assessments undertaken at follow-up at the age of 3 to 13 years. We found 18 (38%) cryptogenic IS cases with typical hypsarrhythmia and 30 symptomatic with modified hypsarrhythmia-further classified into 15 cases as multifocal, 10 as pseudoperiodic and 5 as unilateral hypsarrhythmia. A short treatment lag (one to two weeks) occurred in 25, three to four weeks in 10 cases. Spasms ceased within one month after treatment in 23 infants. At follow-up 15 children had normal mental outcome (borderline included). A correlation between hypsarrhythmia duration longer than three weeks and lower mental outcome was found using the logistic regression model. The duration of hypsarrhythmia represents a sensitive prognostic parameter in IS; the risk of mental retardation increases after three weeks of hypsarrhythmia.

A process for double deuterium labeling of an alcohol was developed. The process was utilized in the subsequent tritium labeling of a secondary alcohol with high specific activity (24 Ci/mmol) by reduction of the corresponding ketone using sodium borotritide. The starting ketone was first brominated with pyridinium tribromide; the resulting alpha bromoketone was then reduced in THF/alcohol in the presence of Ni(OAc)2. The alcohol was then converted to 2-amino-4-fluorobicyclo[3.1.0]hexane-2,6-dicarboxylic acid-[3H2], an mGluR agonist. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent behavioral disorder in children and the etiology of this disorder is not clear. Molecular genetic and pharmacological studies suggest the involvement of dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurotransmitter systems in ADHD, e.g., several reports have found association between ADHD and the dopamine receptor gene DRD-4, the dopamine transporter gene DAT1, and the catecholamine clearance enzyme catechol-O-methyltransferase. Monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B genes encode enzymes that participate in the metabolism of neurotransmitters of the dopaminergic and noradrenergic systems. MAO inhibitors have been shown to be effective in the treatment of ADHD. Our previous studies showed an association between ADHD and the DXS7 locus, which is located in close vicinity to the MAO genes on chromosome X. These findings suggest that there might be linkage between ADHD and MAO genes. To test this hypothesis, we used the transmission/disequilibrium test (TDT) to test for linkage between a VNTR polymorphism at the MAOA(CA)(n) or MAOB(GT)(n) locus and DSM-III-R-diagnosed ADHD in 82 nuclear families of the Chinese population. The TDT analysis revealed linkage between ADHD and the MAOA(CA)(n) locus (chi-square = 15.25, df = 7, P0.05), but not the MAOB(GT)(n) locus (chi-square = 11.18, df = 7, P0.05). The data showed that ADHD was in linkage with the MAOA gene and suggested that MAOA might be a susceptibility factor for ADHD.

The method shows good regioselectivity and provides a useful and operationally simple access to polyfluoroaryl thioethers.

A new type of four potential step differential amperometry in a single pulse sequence mode is proposed on the basis of four potential step differential normal voltammetry. The charging current tends to be eliminated, and the background current is set at zero after the differentiation and addition of the sampling currents on these four potential steps. The signal-to-noise ratio is enhanced by utilizing a series of pulses. In addition, since the potential returns to its initial point, it is advantageous for electrode cleaning and the study of solid electrode and adsorption systems. This provides an alternative approach for electrical current-type electrochemical sensors, electrochemical detection in liquid chromatography, and electrode kinetics studies.

In the presence of a catalytic amount of ytterbium(III) triflate and under microwave irradiation, mixtures of 2-amino-3-thiophenecarbonitriles, ketones, and silica gel afforded smoothly the corresponding amino-thieno[2,3-b]pyridine derivatives in one step. A wide variety of ketones were tested under these conditions. The reactions proceeded rapidly and afforded the desired products in good to excellent yields.

The Sm/cat. CoCl2 or Sm/cat. &Cl2 • 6H2O system promoted disulfides to react with anhydrides or acyl chlorides to afford thiolesters in good yields under mild and neutral conditions.

Promoted by gallium triiodide, an α-bromoketone, bromomethyl phenyl ketone, is treated with acyl chlorides to synthesize 1,3-diketones in good yields under mild and neutral conditions.

The Sm/cat. CoCl2 system promoted diselenides to react with anhydrides or acyl chlorides to afford selenoesters in good yield under mild and neutral conditions.

Catalyzed by ytterbium(III) triflate [Yb(OTf)3], β‐lactams were stereoselectively synthesized from imines and acetyl chlorides in ionic liquid under mild conditions. The ionic liquid and catalyst could be recycled and reused as opposed to traditional solvent–catalyst systems.
