Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is a member of the family Coronaviridae, together with viruses such as SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 (the causative agent of the COVID-19 global pandemic). In this family of viruses, interspecies transmission has been reported, so understanding their pathobiology could lead to a better understanding of the emergence of new serotypes. IBV possesses a single-stranded, non-segmented RNA genome about 27.6 kb in length that encodes several non-structural and structural proteins. Most functions of these proteins have been confirmed in IBV, but some other proposed functions have been based on research conducted on other members of the family Coronaviridae. IBV has variable tissue tropism depending on the strain, and can affect the respiratory, reproductive, or urinary tracts; however, IBV can also replicate in other organs. Additionally, the pathogenicity of IBV is also variable, with some strains causing only mild clinical signs, while infection with others results in high mortality rates in chickens. This paper extensively and comprehensibly reviews general aspects of coronaviruses and, more specifically, IBV, with emphasis on protein functions and pathogenesis. The pathogenicity of the Australian strains of IBV is also reviewed, describing the variability between the different groups of strains, from the classical to the novel and recombinant strains. Reverse genetic systems, cloning and cell culture growth techniques applicable to IBV are also reviewed.

In this first‐person account, we describe the changes we made to align our graduate student‐level community psychology class with a healing justice model. We undertook this intervention because the class started in March, at the beginning of the COVID‐19 pandemic stay‐at‐home directive in our region. We describe the facets of a healing justice model, which promotes radical healing and collective action in a trauma‐informed environment. We then discuss the changes we made to the class to better align with healing justice, including how enrolled students (i.e., co‐authors) experienced the process of the course (e.g., reworking the syllabus, starting class with check‐ins and an exercise to engage our parasympathetic nervous systems), as well as the content of the course (e.g., service projects to support people who are undocumented, unhoused, or minoritized in other ways; photovoice). We end with implications for teaching community psychology, including the importance of universal design, and for scholar‐activist PhD programs., Highlights Community psychology courses and changes to make during stay at home orders.Community psychology training, taking into account trauma during a pandemic.Healing justice as an class intervention to support developing scholar‐activists.

A key trend in the 210-million-year-old history of modern turtles was the evolution of shell kinesis, that is, shell movement during neck and limb retraction. Kinesis is hypothesized to enhance predator defense in small terrestrial and semiaquatic turtles and has evolved multiple times since the early Cretaceous. This complex phenotype is nonfunctional and far from fully differentiated following embryogenesis. Instead, kinesis develops slowly in juveniles, providing a unique opportunity to illustrate the postembryonic origins of an adaptive trait. To this end, we examined ventral shell (plastral) kinesis in emydine box turtles and found that hatchling plastron shape differs from that of akinetic-shelled relatives, particularly where the hinge that enables kinesis differentiates. We also demonstrated shape changes relative to plastron size in juveniles, coinciding with a shift in the carapace-plastron structural connection, rearrangement of ectodermal plates, and bone repatterning. Furthermore, because the shell grows larger relative to the head, complete concealment of the head and extremities is only achieved after relative shell proportions increase. Structural alterations that facilitate the box turtle's transformation are probably prepatterned in embryos but require function-induced changes to differentiate in juveniles. This mode of delayed trait differentiation is essential to phenotypic diversification in turtles and perhaps other tetrapods.

Introduction\ud \ud Evidence concerning the interactions between human health and planetary health has grown extensively in recent years. In turn, the perceived importance of environmental sustainability within higher education is growing at a rapid rate. This paper provides a summary of key elements as they apply to dentistry, and provides an introduction to the reader of an early consensus of how sustainability could be included as part of the dental curriculum.\ud \ud \ud Methods\ud \ud The consensus opinion within this paper largely centres around discussion at the ADEE sustainability workshop at the annual conference in Berlin (August 2019). In order to help inform discussions at the workshop, a brief scoping questionnaire was circulated to potential participants regarding their understanding and current teaching practices in sustainability. An infographic was designed to help delegates remember the important elements of sustainable dentistry. Delegates discussed the concept of sustainability alongside the infographic, and how they could link these with the Graduating European Dentist (GED) curriculum.\ud \ud \ud Results\ud \ud The discussions within the workshop largely centred around 4 main themes: Disease prevention and health promotion, Patient education and empowerment, Lean service delivery and Preferential use of strategies with lower environmental impact.\ud \ud \ud Discussion\ud \ud It is apparent that there is a widespread need for teaching materials relating to environmental sustainability; this includes specific learning outcomes relating to the 4 educational domains of the Graduating European Dentist curriculum, and methods for teaching and assessing these outcomes.\ud \ud \ud Conclusion\ud \ud This paper reports consensus on the first phase of a pan‐European working group on Sustainability in dental education

Diversification of the turtle's shell comprises remarkable phenotypic transformations. For instance, two divergent species convergently evolved shell-closing systems with shoulder blade (scapula) segments that enable coordinated movements with the shell. We expected these unusual structures to originate via similar changes in underlying gene networks, as skeletal segment formation is an evolutionarily conserved developmental process. We tested this hypothesis by comparing transcriptomes of scapula tissue across three stages of embryonic development in three emydid turtles from natural populations. We found that alternative strategies for skeletal segmentation were associated with interspecific differences in gene co-expression networks. Notably, mesenchyme homeobox 2 (MEOX2) and HOXA3-5 were central hubs driving the activity of 2,806 genes in a candidate network for scapula segmentation, albeit in only one species. Even so, scapula muscle overgrowth corresponded to the activity of similar myogenic networks in both species. This and other derived developmental processes were not observed in the third species, which displayed the ancestral (unsegmented) scapula condition. Differential gene expression tests against this reference lineage supported histological and network analyses. Our findings illustrate that molecular underpinnings of convergent evolution, including during the diversification of the atypical turtle "body plan," are influenced by variation in underlying developmental processes.

SummaryBackground Childhood obesity is a serious public health problem in Mexico. Adult gut microbiota composition has been linked to obesity, but few studies have addressed the role of gut microbiota in childhood obesity. Objectives The aim of this study is to compare gut microbiota composition in obese and normal-weight children and to associate gut microbiota profiles with amino acid serum levels and obesity-related metabolic traits. Methods Microbial taxa relative abundance was determined by 16S rRNA sequencing in 67 normal-weight and 71 obese children aged 6–12 years. Serum amino acid levels were measured by mass spectrometry. Associations between microbiota composition, metabolic parameters and amino acid serum levels were tested. Results No significant differences in phyla abundances or Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratios were observed between normal-weight and obese children. However, Bacteroides eggerthii abundance was significantly higher in obese children and correlated positively with body fat percentage and negatively with insoluble fibre intake. Additionally, Bacteroides plebeius and unclassified Christensenellaceae abundances were significantly higher in normal-weight children. Abundance of both these species correlated negatively with phenylalanine serum levels, a metabolite also found to be associated with obesity in Mexican children. Conclusions The study identified bacterial species associated with obesity, metabolic complications and amino acid serum levels in Mexican children.

Sophorolipids (SLs) offer an “environmentally friendly” alternative to chemically produced surfactants currently used in formulations for crude oil extraction, processing, and reclamation. Studies herein describe how sophorolipid structure influences its interfacial properties for environmentally and industrially relevant oil–water systems where the oil phase is Arabian light crude oil, paraffin oil, decane, hexadecane, a 1:1 vol/vol mixture of o-xylene and 1,2-dimethylcyclohexane, or a mixture of paraffin oil, o-xylene, and 1,2-dimethylcyclohexane (synthetic crude oil). SL-hexyl ester (SL-HE) reduces the crude oil–water interfacial tension (IFT) by 57 and 91% at 0.001 and 0.5 mg/mL, respectively. Crude oil displacement tests reveal that SL-ethyl ester (SL-EE) and SL-HE contract a crude oil slick on water to about 20% of its starting volume allowing for easier burning of spilled crude oil on marine surfaces. Water retention and emulsion phase (e.g., o/w vs. w/o) are determined by SL-structure/concentration, oil concentration, and oil composition to understand their performance for crude oil transportation and clean-up. For the first time, w/o emulsions were obtained using SLs and their formation occurred after homogenization when the oil phase consisted of a 1:1 mixture of o-xylene and 1,2-dimethylcyclohexane. Generally, the performance of SL-esters in the above studies was superior to that using Triton X-100, a comparison nonionic surfactant. Hence, SL-esters offer a valuable platform for tuning interfacial properties to optimize surfactant performance.

Background and aim Abnormal cholesterol metabolism may contribute to the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and fibrosis. miR-33 and miR-144 regulate adenosine triphosphate binding cassette transporter (ABCA1) and other target genes involved in cholesterol efflux, fatty acid oxidation and inflammation. We explored relationships between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the hepatic expression of ABCA1/ABCG1, as well as other target genes regulated by miR-33 (carnitine O-octanoyltransferase, CROT and hydroxyacyl-CoA-dehydrogenase β-subunit, HADHB) and miR-144 (toll-like receptor-2, TLR2). Moreover, we evaluated whether the expression of these genes is correlated with miR-33a/b and miR-144 expression in Mexican individuals with morbid obesity. Methods Eighty-four morbidly obese subjects undergoing bariatric surgery were included in this study. Liver biopsies were obtained to measure hepatic triglyceride and free cholesterol contents, as well as ABCA1, ABCG1, CROT, HADHB, TLR2, miR-33a/b and miR-144 expression. Results Hepatic free cholesterol content was significantly increased in NASH as compared to non-NASH subjects, while ABCA1 and ABCG1 protein levels significantly decreased with NASH and fibrosis progression. The relative expression of miR-33a and miR-144 correlated inversely with ABCA1 but not with ABCG1 protein levels. Moreover, both miRNAs increased significantly in NASH individuals. miR-33 target genes CROT and HADHB correlated inversely with miR-33a. However, the expression of these genes was not associated with NASH. Conclusions miR-33a/144 and their target gene ABCA1 may contribute to the pathogenesis of NASH in morbidly obese subjects.

OBJECTIVES: This article aims to assess the contribution of genomic ancestry and socioeconomic status to obesity in a sample of admixed Latin Americans. METHODS: The study comprised 6776 adult volunteers from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. Each volunteer completed a questionnaire about socioeconomic variables. Anthropometric variables such as weight, height, waist, and hip circumference were measured to calculate body indices: body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). Genetic data were extracted from blood samples, and ancestry was estimated using chip genotypes. Multiple linear regression was used to evaluate the relationship between the indices and ancestry, educational level, and economic well-being. The body indices were dichotomized to obesity indices by using appropriate thresholds. Odds ratios were calculated for each obesity index. RESULTS: The sample showed high percentages of obesity by all measurements. However, indices did not overlap consistently when classifying obesity. WHtR resulted in the highest prevalence of obesity. Overall, women with low education level and men with high economic wellness were more likely to be obese. American ancestry was statistically associated with obesity indices, although to a lesser extent than socioeconomic variables. CONCLUSIONS: The proportion of obesity was heavily dependent on the index and the population. Genomic ancestry has a significant influence on the anthropometric measurements, especially on central adiposity. As a whole, we detected a large interpopulation variation that suggests that better approaches to overweight and obesity phenotypes are needed in order to obtain more precise reference values.

The objectives of this work were to describe some morphometric characteristics and to establish quantitative parameters of different regions of the equine oviductal mucosa from the isthmus, ampullary-isthmic junction (AIJ), and ampulla. Twenty-one mixed-bred mares were used for this study. Mares were selected in the following reproductive phases: anestrus, estrus, and diestrus. The left oviducts were examined with light microscopy, and rights ones were studied through the intraoviductal molds. The isthmus showed the smallest luminal area, mucosal area, epithelial perimeter, and luminal diameter. On the molds surfaces, some grooves extended as longitudinal canals, reducing their depth as they approached to the AIJ. Several small height projections, some obliquely positioned towards utero-tubal junction, were observed in all reproductive phases. These formations may represent pockets or cul-de-sacs in the basal areas of the epithelial folds. The AIJ mucosa gradually changed from the smooth isthmic region toward highly folded ampulla. The number and complexity of epithelial folds showed moderate increase in the same way that many of the morphometric parameters. Multiple curves were observed on the molds of the AIJ, creating a zigzag path in the oviductal lumen. In the ampulla, the high branched epithelial folds occupied most of the lumen, leaving a small luminal area free. A linear relationship between epithelial perimeter and mucosal area was found. The presence of glandular-like structures was observed in all the reproductive stages studied. Fluctuating and directional asymmetry are aspects of morphological variation widely used to infer environmental and genetic factors affecting facial phenotypes. However, the genetic basis and environmental determinants of both asymmetry types is far from being completely known. The analysis of facial asymmetries in admixed individuals can be of help to characterize the impact of a genome's heterozygosity on the developmental basis of both fluctuating and directional asymmetries. Here we characterize the association between genetic ancestry and individual asymmetry on a sample of Latin-American admixed populations. To do so, three-dimensional (3D) facial shape attributes were explored on a sample of 4,104 volunteers aged between 18 and 85 years. Individual ancestry and heterozygosity was estimated using more than 730,000 genome-wide markers. Multivariate techniques applied to geometric morphometric data were used to evaluate the magnitude and significance of directional and fluctuating asymmetry (FA), as well as correlations and multiple regressions aimed to estimate the relationship between facial FA scores and heterozygosity and a set of covariates. Results indicate that directional and FA are both significant, the former being the strongest expression of asymmetry in this sample. In addition, our analyses suggest that there are some specific patterns of facial asymmetries characterizing the different ancestry groups. Finally, we find that more heterozygous individuals exhibit lower levels of asymmetry. Our results highlight the importance of including ancestry-admixture estimators, especially when the analyses are aimed to compare levels of asymmetries on groups differing on socioeconomic levels, as a proxy to estimate developmental noise.

We report on non-polar switching of the resistance between a low and a high resistive state in MgO-based metal-insulator-metal structures. The MgO films were grown by MBE on top of Pt/Si substrates and Pt electrodes were evaporated on top. The obtained resistance ratio is of the order of 108-109, much larger than previously reported values in similar devices. We observe a gradual degradation during consecutive switching events and a significant large dispersion of the voltages at which the resistance switch occurs. The overall behavior of the devices is assigned to a low defect density in these samples. The obtained results suggest that the resistive switching is produced by the formation and disruption of Mg metallic filaments. In order to analyze the influence of interfaces, we also study the effect of adding an intermediate layer of either Al2O3 or Mg within the Pt/MgO/Pt structures. Objective To identify susceptibility loci for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Latin American individuals with admixed European and Amerindian genetic ancestry. Methods Genotyping was performed in 1,475 patients with RA and 1,213 control subjects, using a customized BeadArray containing 196,524 markers covering loci previously associated with various autoimmune diseases. Principal components analysis (EigenSoft package) and Structure software were used to identify outliers and define the population substructure. REAP software was used to define cryptic relatedness and duplicates, and genetic association analyses were conducted using Plink statistical software. Results A strong genetic association between RA and the major histocompatibility complex region was observed, localized within BTNL2/DRA–DQB1– DQA2 (P = 7.6 × 10−10), with 3 independent effects. We identified an association in the PLCH2-HES5-TNFRSF14-MMEL1 region of chromosome 1 (P = 9.77 × 10−6), which was previously reported in Europeans, Asians, and Native Canadians. We identified one novel putative association in ENOX1 on chromosome 13 (P = 3.24 × 10−7). Previously reported associations were observed in the current study, including PTPN22, SPRED2, STAT4, IRF5, CCL21, and IL2RA, although the significance was relatively moderate. Adjustment for Amerindian ancestry improved the association of a novel locus in chromosome 12 at C12orf30 (NAA25) (P = 3.9 × 10−6). Associations with the HLA region, SPRED2, and PTPN22 improved in individuals positive for anti–cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies. Conclusion Our data define, for the first time, the contribution of Amerindian ancestry to the genetic architecture of RA in an admixed Latin American population by confirming the role of the HLA region and supporting the association with a locus in chromosome 1. In addition, we provide data for novel putative loci in chromosomes 12 and 13.

In the climate of increased anti-immigrant sentiment, deportations of immigrants from the United States are on the upsurge. This article begins with a review of current immigration laws enabling detentions and deportations of undocumented immigrants, as well as permanent legal residents with a prior criminal conviction. It then explores how immigrants and refugees interact with this national climate in Lowell, Massachusetts, a traditional immigrant city in the Northeast of the United States. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions have clearly had an impact on Lowell. Our findings indicate that fear and mistrust of local authorities is driving behavior of immigrants, who are reluctant to seek medical services or to report violence to the police, whom they suspect of collaborating with ICE.

Objective: To report repair of a coxofemoral joint luxation in an Alpaca using a toggle-pin technique. Study Design: Case report. Animals: An 11-month intact male Alpaca with luxation of the right coxofemoral joint. Methods: The Alpaca was anesthetized and an open repair and reduction of the luxation was performed using a toggle-pin technique. Results: The luxation was successfully reduced. An Ehmer sling was used for the initial 3 days after surgery and the Alpaca was discharged 7 days postoperatively without complications. Follow-up examinations confirmed maintained reduction of the coxofemoral joint, as well as no evidence of lameness or muscle atrophy. Conclusions: Coxofemoral joint luxations in Alpacas can be successfully repaired using a toggle-pin technique alone, without the need for other techniques such as capsular reconstruction or greater trochanter transposition. Use of an Ehmer sling for the immediate postoperative period provided additional protection to the repair and was tolerated well.

Summary This study was undertaken to describe the technique, complications and outcome of the use of a chain ecraseur for transpalpebral enucleation in horses under general anaesthesia. We report its use in 53 horses, reviewing the subject details, reasons for enucleation, surgical technique, intra- and post operative complications, and long-term outcome. Intraoperative complications included mild to moderate bleeding in 4 horses. Post operative complications included mild periorbital post operative swelling in one horse, transient head tilt in one horse and severe enterocolitis, which resulted in euthanasia in one horse; another 2 horses were subjected to euthanasia after long bone fractures that occurred during recovery from general anaesthesia and 2 horses had the prosthesis removed as a result of inflammatory reaction or infection. Long-term outcome was available for 38 horses, 25 of which returned to their previous activities and 13 were retired. Twelve horses were lost for follow-up. Transpalpebral enucleation using a chain ecraseur is a feasible alternative to traditional enucleation techniques that can provide adequate haemostasis during transection of the optic pedicle when used properly.

Common polymorphisms in the fat mass and obesity-associated gene (FTO) have shown strong association with obesity in several populations. In the present study, we explored the association of FTO gene polymorphisms with obesity and other biochemical parameters in the Mexican population. We also assessed FTO gene expression levels in adipose tissue of obese and nonobese individuals. The study comprised 788 unrelated Mexican-Mestizo individuals and 31 subcutaneous fat tissue biopsies from lean and obese women. FTO single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs9939609, rs1421085, and rs17817449 were associated with obesity, particularly with class III obesity, under both additive and dominant models (P = 0.0000004 and 0.000008, respectively). These associations remained significant after adjusting for admixture (P = 0.000003 and 0.00009, respectively). Moreover, risk alleles showed a nominal association with lower insulin levels and homeostasis model assessment of B-cell function (HOMA-B), and with higher homeostasis model assessment of insulin sensitivity (HOMA-S) only in nonobese individuals (P (dom) = 0.031, 0.023, and 0.049, respectively). FTO mRNA levels were significantly higher in subcutaneous fat tissue of class III obese individuals than in lean individuals (P = 0.043). Risk alleles were significantly associated with higher FTO expression in the class III obesity group (P = 0.047). In conclusion, FTO is a major risk factor for obesity (particularly class III) in the Mexican-Mestizo population, and is upregulated in subcutaneous fat tissue of obese individuals.

Arsenic is a world health problem due to the seriousness of its effects, mainly related with the increase of cancer. In Chile, the geological characteristics of the northern region, associated with the development of the copper mining and smelting activities, have contributed to increase the environmental levels of arsenic. This study has been conducted to investigate the relationship between arsenic occupational exposure and genotoxic effects in smelting plant workers. To determine the genotoxic risk related to the increase of cancer among the chronically exposed population, the frequency of micronuclei in blood (BNMN) has been evaluated. The study was carried out in a total of 207 men, divided into three groups: an exposed group of 105 individuals working in a smelting plant, an internal reference group with 52 employees at the same mine but in the administrative area, and an external reference group of 50 workers from another copper mine where no significant levels of arsenic were detected. As expected, differences between arsenic levels in urine have been detected between groups, with the exposed group being the one with a higher level of total arsenic in urine, followed by the internal reference group. Despite that, no significant differences in micronuclei frequencies in lymphocytes were detected among these groups.
