Bioassay-guided fractionation of an ethyl acetate extract of Fissistigma lanuginosum led to the isolation of the known chalcone pedicin [1], which inhibited tubulin assembly into microtubules (IC50 value of 300 microM). From the same EtOAc fraction, two new condensed chalcones, fissistin [2] and isofissistin [3], which showed cytotoxicity against KB cells, were also obtained, together with the inactive dihydropedicin [4] and 6,7-dimethoxy-5,8-dihydroxyflavone [5]. In addition, the aminoquinones 6, 8, and 9 were isolated from the alkaloid extract. These compounds were artifacts, prepared by treatment of 1, 4, and 2, respectively, with NH4OH. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by spectral methods, especially 2D nmr.

Three known dammarane triterpenes, 3-epi-ocotillol, eichlerianic acid and shoreic acid, together with two new ones, foveolins A and B, have been isolated from the bark of Aglaia foveolata. Structural elucidation was achieved by 2D NMR experiments.

Seven pot experiments were conducted to study the direct and the accumulative effect of urea containing (0.4, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 %) biuret on the growth of rice, wheat, and maize plants and their N content and N uptake in two fine textured alluvial soils and one sandy clay loam (highly calcareous) soil. It was found that both rice and wheat grain yields were not significantly reduced in all soils where urea containing high percentage of biuret was used namely 3 % and 4 %. Ammonium sulphate fertilizer was superior to urea in plant production only in the sandy clay loam. Moreover, the N recovery was higher in the alluvial soils in comparison to the sandy clay loam. The accumulative addition of biuret to the soils did not further reduce either the growth rate or the N uptake of the plants. Wirkung von Biuret in Harnstoff auf Wachstum und Stickstoffaufnahme einiger Getreidearten in agyptischen Boden In sieben Gefasversuchen wurde die Wirkung einmaliger und wiederholter Gaben von Harnstoff mit unterschiedlichem Gehalt an Biuret (0.4, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 und 4.0%) auf Reis-, Weizen- und Maispflanzen, ihren N-Gehalt (%) und ihre N-Aufnahme aus zwei feintexturierten Alluvialboden und einem sandig-tonigen (sehr carbonathaltigen) Lehmboden gepruft. Es ergab sich, das in allen Boden, in denen Harnstoff mit hohem Biuretgehalt Verwendung fand (3 % und 4%), die Kornertrage von Reis und Weizen nicht signifikant erniedrigt wurden. Ammoniumsulfat-Dunger erwies sich nur im carbonathaltigen, sandig-tonigen Lehmboden dem Harnstoff uberlegen. Im ubrigen war die N-Ausnutzung in den alluvialen Boden groser als in dem sehr carbonathaltigen Boden. Eine wiederholte kumulative Gabe von Biuret erniedrigte weder die Wachstumsrate noch die Stickstoffaufnahme der Pflanzen.

In model experiments (60 % water holding capacity and 30°C) with a loamy clay (pH 8.3) and a calcareous sand (pH 7.9) the effect of biuret upon the breakdown of urea was studied. Ammonification and nitrification occured very quickly, in case of the calcareous sand at the beginning more NH4 was evolved. Biuret in concentration from 0.4 to 8 % maximum did not influence urea hydrolysis, however it resulted in higher NO2-figures at the beginning of the experiments demonstrating an initial marked inhibition of the process NO2 NO3 especially in the calcareous sand. The total nitrification seemed to be a little retarded but did not differ very much finally. Wirkung von Biuret auf die Umsetzung von Harnstoff in agyptischen Boden In Modellversuchen (60 % der vollen Wasserkapazitat und 30°C) wurde in agyptischen Boden (lehmiger Boden, pH 8.3 und alkalischer Sand, pH 7.9) der Einflus von Biuret auf die Transformation von Harnstoff untersucht. Die Ammonifikation und Nitrifikation ging sehr rasch vor sich; im Falle des alkalischen Sandes wurde zu Beginn mehr NH4 entwickelt. Biuret in Konzentrationen von 0.4 bis maximal 8 % beeinfluste die Harnstoffhydrolyse nicht, fuhrte aber auf dem alkalischen Sandboden anfangs zu deutlich hoheren NO2-Werten, die eine merk-liche Hemmung des Vorganges NO2 NO3 erkennen lassen. Die gesamte Nitratbildung schien etwas verzogert, wurde aber letztlich nicht wesentlich beeinflust.
