Abstract Regular counts of walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) across their pan‐Arctic range are necessary to determine accurate population trends and in turn understand how current rapid changes in their habitat, such as sea ice loss, are impacting them. However, surveying a region as vast and remote as the Arctic with vessels or aircraft is a formidable logistical challenge, limiting the frequency and spatial coverage of field surveys. An alternative methodology involving very high‐resolution (VHR) satellite imagery has proven to be a useful tool to detect walruses, but the feasibility of accurately counting individuals has not been addressed. Here, we compare walrus counts obtained from a VHR WorldView‐3 satellite image, with a simultaneous ground count obtained using a remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS). We estimated the accuracy of the walrus counts depending on (1) the spatial resolution of the VHR satellite imagery, providing the same WorldView‐3 image to assessors at three different spatial resolutions (i.e., 50, 30 and 15 cm per pixel) and (2) the level of expertise of the assessors (experts vs. a mixed level of experience – representative of citizen scientists). This latter aspect of the study is important to the efficiency and outcomes of the global assessment programme because there are citizen science campaigns inviting the public to count walruses in VHR satellite imagery. There were 73 walruses in our RPAS ‘control’ image. Our results show that walruses were under‐counted in VHR satellite imagery at all spatial resolutions and across all levels of assessor expertise. Counts from the VHR satellite imagery with 30 cm spatial resolution were the most accurate and least variable across levels of expertise. This was a successful first attempt at validating VHR counts with near‐simultaneous, in situ, data but further assessments are required for walrus aggregations with different densities and configurations, on different substrates.

Abstract Background This study aimed to delineate the temporal patterns of esophageal cancer epidemic trends and spatial clustering patterns among male populations in China's mainland from 1990 to 2021. This analysis aimed to provide a scientific rationale and empirical data to facilitate the formulation of targeted prevention and control strategies. Methods Data on the number of cases and deaths, crude and age‐standardized incidence and mortality rates of esophageal cancer in men were collected from the Global Burden of Disease Study and the Chinese Cancer Registry Annual Report. Global and local Moran's I spatial autocorrelation index was employed to quantify spatial clustering, and a disease map was drawn. Results From 1990 to 2021, the cumulative incidence and mortality of esophageal cancer in men were 6 100 342 and 5 972 294, respectively. The crude incidence and death rates increased in 2021, yet the age‐standardized rates decreased significantly. Cixian County in Hebei Province had the highest age‐standardized rates. The disease displayed spatial clustering, with relatively high rates in Shandong, Jiangsu, and Hebei Provinces. Conclusion Since 1990, the incidence and mortality of esophageal cancer among men in mainland China have remained high, imposing a considerable burden. Although age‐adjusted rates have declined, they are still relatively high overall, especially in Shandong, Hebei, and Jiangsu Provinces.

Abstract Background Understanding the trends of the prevalence and incidence rate of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is vital for improving the control and prevention of COPD. We aimed to examine the trends in the prevalence and incidence rate of COPD among adults aged 50 years or older in the United States during 2000–2020. Methods Utilizing data from the Health and Retirement Study, we analyzed COPD prevalence across survey waves and calculated COPD incidence rates between consecutive interview waves, stratified by gender and race. We employed joinpoint regression models to investigate trends in COPD prevalence and incidence. Results The individuals reporting COPD are more likely to be women and Caucasians. The age‐adjusted prevalence of COPD among adults aged 50 years and over showed an increasing trend throughout the study period, spanning from 9.02% in 2000 to 9.88% in 2020 (average biennial percent change [ABPC] = 0.41, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.10, 0.71; p = 0.01). The age‐adjusted incidence rate of COPD among adults aged 50 and over showed a decreasing trend throughout the study period 1031.1 per 100,000 person‐years in 2000 to 700.5 per 100,000 person‐years in 2020 (ABPC = −1.63, 95% CI: −2.88, −0.36; p = 0.02). Conclusion Our findings indicate a rising prevalence of COPD among older adults in the United States since 2000, while the incidence rate of COPD has shown a declining trend.

Abstract Background Lung cancer (LC) is currently the number one malignancy death rate disease in China, and its disease burden is serious. The study aimed to analyze trends of LC and its risk factor attributable disease in China from 1990 to 2019 and predict the next 41 years. Methods The average annual percentage change (AAPC) was used to analyze the trend of LC and its risk factor attributable incidence, deaths, and disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs) rate in China from 1990 to 2019, collected in the Global Burden of Disease 2019. Cochran–Armitage trends examine trends in lung cancer disease burden by sex, age, and attributable risk factor groups in China from 1990 to 2019. In addition, based on data on death and DALYs rate due to LC and its risk factors between 1990 and 2019, an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model was developed to predict the change in the trend of burden of disease due to LC and its risk factors over the next 41 years, and the model was evaluated using the model parameters root mean square error, mean absolute error, and mean absolute percentage error. Results From 1990 to 2019, the incidence, mortality and DALYs of LC were all increased. Among the eight risk factors associated with lung cancer, the DALYs rate and mortality rate of lung cancer risk factors for Chinese residents increased from 1990 to 2019, except for household air pollution from solid fuels and diet low in fruit, which showed a decrease; among them, the DALYs rate and mortality rate due to ambient particulate matter pollution showed the greatest increase with AAPC values of 2.880 and 3.310, respectively, while DALYs and mortality rates due to household air pollution from solid fuels showed the largest decreases, with AAPC values of −4.755 and −4.348, respectively. The results of the ARIMA model predictions show that both the mortality rate and the rate of DALYs for lung cancer are increasing yearly, and it is predicted that the rate of DALYs for lung cancer by 2060 will reach 740.095/100 000 and the mortality rate will reach 35.151/100 000. It is expected that by 2060, the top four risk factors for lung cancer in China will be, in order of DALYs rate and mortality rate, smoking, ambient particulate matter pollution, high fasting plasma glucose (HFPG), and secondhand smoke, with HFPG showing the greatest increase. Conclusions The LC burden increased from 1990 to 2019 in China, the LC burden that could be attributed to HFPG will continue to increase in the next 40 years, and will be the third most factor by 2060. Targeted interventions are warranted to facilitate the prevention of LC and improvement of health‐related quality of life patients with LC.

Abstract Human relationships with nature may sometimes manifest through fear, disgust and other disease‐avoidance mechanisms. While there is an evolutionary utility to these so‐called ‘biophobias’, many people exhibit phobic responses towards organisms that pose no tangible threats, potentially leading to excessive anxiety and avoidance of interactions with nature. Understanding the drivers of the prevalence and spread of biophobias in modern societies is, therefore, a growing concern. Here, we posit that online information‐seeking patterns may reveal general insights into biophobias. Using a culturomics approach, we gathered temporal (2004–2022) and country‐level data on the volume of internet searches for 25 biophobias, as well as 25 general phobias acting as a benchmark group. We explored temporal trends in the volume of search for each biophobias and modelled relationships between search volume for biophobias and five country‐level variables. We observed a steady increase in online search volume for biophobias between 2004 and 2022. Yet, there were marked differences in individual trends, with 17 biophobias showing positive, three negative and five stationary temporal trends. Arachnophobia (fear of spiders) attracted the most interest, followed by mysophobia (fear of microbes) and parasitophobia (fear of parasites). The United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Mexico and India recorded wide interest in most biophobias, whereas 49% of countries showed no search volume for any biophobia. Search patterns for biophobias were strongly associated with the percentage of urban population, urban population growth and the number of extant venomous species in a given country. Conversely, search patterns for biophobias were weakly correlated with the incidence of anxiety disorders in a country's population and the likelihood of encounters with venomous animals. Our results provide quantitative support to the hypothesis that biophobias are broadly prevalent and possibly increasing as a result of widespread urbanisation and loss of experiences with nature. We suggest that people affected by biophobic disorders may be using the Internet as a key venue to seek relevant information to appraise their condition and identify coping mechanisms. These findings have broad ramifications for understanding and mitigating human–wildlife conflicts and the prevalence of widespread biophobic sentiments in modern societies.

Abstract Simulations based on physical models of the thermosphere‐ionosphere system suggest that the ionosphere will sink as the thermosphere cools and contracts in response to increasing greenhouse gas concentrations. As a consequence, long‐term trends can be expected in ionospheric parameters such as: total electron content (TEC), the critical frequency of the F2 layer, foF2, and its peak height, hmF2. Since early 1990s, foF2 and hmF2, though to a lesser extent, have been widely analyzed to find these trends. This study shows long‐term TEC trends for the period 1999–2023 from available global International GNSS service TEC maps. Using F30, F10.7 or MgII as proxies to filter out the effect of solar EUV, the trends are negative, not only for the mean global value but also for most regions with very few exceptions. This would align with the greenhouse effect hypothesis, even though our results show higher negative trend values than expected theoretically.

Abstract Trends in the coupled stratosphere‐troposphere system during the 1979–2022 period are investigated in the Northern Hemisphere using reanalysis datasets. More upward planetary wave propagation in December is shown to precede the deceleration of the stratospheric polar vortex in January. This deceleration prevents the waves from continuing to propagate upward in February and favors an acceleration of the stratospheric polar vortex in March. This is associated with an increased Northern Hemisphere annular mode in March in the stratosphere and the troposphere. Trends show a moderate significance level because of strong interannual variability. Recent seasons whose anomalies project onto the trends are those for which wave‐1 anomaly constructively interferes with wave‐1 climatology in December, which occurs when there is warming in an area extending from Eastern Canada to Greenland and slight cooling over Eurasia. It shows the potential for predicting the springtime stratospheric polar vortex from wintertime wave‐1 anomalies.

Abstract Global reanalyzes are widely used for investigations of Antarctic climate variability and change. The European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts 5th generation reanalysis (ERA5) is well regarded and spans 1940 to today. We investigate whether ERA5 reliably represents the 2‐m air temperature trends across the 1940–2022 (83 years) period at seasonal and annual time scales. We compare ERA5 temperatures with an observation‐based temperature reconstruction for Antarctica (RECON) that has monthly resolution for 1958–2022, the period of reliable observational availability. Results for individual stations are also examined. ERA5 anomalously warms Antarctica in relation RECON especially for the period prior to 1979 when satellite observations over the Southern Ocean were sparse. Trend hotspots that are shown to be artifacts are found at three locations and are present until today. The results demonstrate that ERA5 temperature trends can be questionable even today, but variability is well captured after 1979.

Abstract Background and Aims The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic has affected the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. Elective operations and surveillance endoscopies were postponed for IBD patients to preserve healthcare resources and to prevent the spread of COVID‐19. This study aimed to describe the trends and outcomes of IBD surgery during the pandemic. Methods This was a retrospective propensity score‐matched analysis using data extracted from TriNetX, a multi‐institutional research database. IBD patients admitted for surgery were identified between March 2019 to February 2020 (prepandemic) and March 2020 to February 2023 (pandemic). The monthly volume of IBD surgical procedures was compared during the pandemic to the prepandemic period. After matching, the risk of adverse outcomes following IBD surgery was compared between the 3 years of the pandemic compared to the prepandemic cohort. Results There was a reduction in both elective and emergency IBD operations during the pandemic. These trends were not significant. After matching, the risks of returning to theaters and hospital readmission were comparable across the 3 years of the pandemic. In the first and second years of the pandemic, elective patients were at a greater risk of mortality (risk ratio [RR], 2; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.160–3.448 and RR, 1.778; 95% CI, 1.003–3.150, respectively) and the emergency cohort had a higher risk of critical care admission (RR, 1.759; 95% CI, 1.126–2.747 and RR, 1.742; 95% CI, 1.131–2.682, respectively). Conclusion Our study highlights the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on the management of IBD patients undergoing surgery. These results provide insights into the management of IBD surgery during times of crisis and can help guide decision‐making and resource allocation for IBD patients requiring surgical intervention.

Abstract Background In recent years, psychological distress in Western countries has rapidly increased among older adolescents while alcohol use has declined, though little is known about younger adolescents. It is also unclear if and how these trends relate to co‐occurring alcohol use and distress. This study sought to examine temporal changes in the prevalence of distress, alcohol use, and their co‐occurrence among young Australians. Methods This study used data from 13,388 youth in their early teens (aged 12–14). Differences in the prevalence of high psychological distress (Kessler‐6 ≥ 13), any alcohol use (standard drink in past 3/6 months), and their co‐occurrence across cohorts (2007, 2012, 2014, 2019) were tested through log‐binomial regression models. Changes in co‐occurrence across cohorts were tested with cohort‐by‐alcohol interactions predicting distress, and vice‐versa. Differential trends by sex were evaluated. Results From 2007 to 2019, the prevalence of high distress more than doubled (4.6%–13.5%) while alcohol use decreased by ∼90% (11.8%–3.1%). Distress increased more‐so among females, while alcohol use decreased more‐so among males. The prevalence of high distress was significantly greater among adolescents who used alcohol compared to those who had not (>2 times higher), with this co‐occurrence remaining consistent across cohorts. Conclusions Psychological distress appears to be increasing similarly among youth in their early teens who do and do not use alcohol. At the same time, alcohol use is decreasing similarly among youth with and without distress. While alcohol use does not appear to be a driver of increases in distress, rates of co‐occurring alcohol use and distress remain high. Addressing co‐occurrence and distress‐specific mechanisms remain necessary.

ABSTRACT Introduction Breast cancer poses significant health risks to women and strains healthcare systems extensively. In low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs), limited resources and inadequate healthcare infrastructures further exacerbate the challenges of breast cancer prevention, treatment, and awareness. Methods We examined the prevalence, risk factors, and trends of breast cancer in LMICs. Data on disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs) and breast cancer risk factors were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) databases for 203 countries or territories from 1990 to 2019. LMIC DALY rates were examined using joinpoint regression analysis. Results Among the income groups, the lower middle‐income category had the highest DALYs value, with 1787 years per 100,000 people. LMICs collectively accounted for 74% of the global burden of DALYs lost due to breast cancer in 2019. However, it remained relatively consistent in lower middle income countries (LMCs). In LMCs, the risk associated with metabolic syndromes was higher compared to that with behavioral factors alone. Abstract Extreme rainfall events (EREs) caused by convection are a major prediction challenge and can lead to deadly flash flooding. This study investigates EREs from 2003 to 2023 over the central and eastern United States using high‐resolution (4‐km) Stage IV precipitation analyses. EREs were defined where 12‐hr accumulations exceeded the 10‐year average recurrence interval thresholds. Summertime (June–August) EREs exhibited pronounced interannual variability, but with statistically significant increasing trends in annual frequency, particularly among those caused by mesoscale convective systems. Significant relationships were also found between summertime convective EREs over the central United States and enhanced poleward moisture transport, consistent with a westward expansion of the climatological North Atlantic Subtropical High. This relationship may aid in medium‐ and long‐range forecasting. However, the spatial scale of EREs often included localized or narrow bands of extreme accumulations, revealing significant challenges in the accurate representation of EREs in weather and climate models.

Background The treatment of severe aortic stenosis has evolved considerably since the introduction of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), yet trends in complications for patients undergoing TAVR or surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) at a national level have yet to be evaluated. Methods and Results We performed a retrospective cohort study using Medicare data to evaluate temporal trends in complications among beneficiaries, aged ≥65 years, treated with elective isolated transfemoral TAVR or SAVR between 2012 and 2019. The study end point was the occurrence of a major complication (composite outcome) during index and up to 30 days after. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess odds of complications for TAVR and SAVR, individually over time, and for TAVR versus SAVR, over time. The cohort included 211 212 patients (mean±SD age, 78.6±7.3 years; 45.0% women). Complication rates during index following elective isolated aortic valve replacement decreased from 49% in 2012 to 22% in 2019. These reductions were more pronounced for TAVR (41% to >19%, Δ=22%) than SAVR (51% to >47%, Δ=4%). After risk adjustment, the risk of any complication with TAVR was 47% (P

Abstract The Great Lakes Region (GLR) of North America is at the intersection of multiple extratropical cyclone (ETC) tracks, and the region's cold‐season climate is heavily influenced by the large temperature gradients and intense precipitation associated with these cyclones. The goal of this study is to understand how ETCs are changing within a warming climate. Historical GLR cyclone characteristics from 1959 to 2021 are examined using a storm tracking algorithm and the ERA‐5 atmospheric reanalysis. Of the 886 cyclones identified, half are the large long‐track cyclones that are typically included in ETC studies, and half are smaller short‐track cyclones that, while not always considered in ETC studies, still have an important impact on the GLR with significant precipitation trends. While all cyclones exhibit strong interannual variability, storm trajectories appear to be migrating northward and, most notably, the cyclones are becoming warmer and wetter at a rate faster than the background climate.

Abstract Hydrological drought is a pervasive and reoccurring challenge in managing water resources. Reservoirs are critical for lessening the impacts of drought on water available for many uses. We use a novel and generalized approach to identify periods of unusually low reservoir storage—via comparisons to operational rule curves and historical patterns—to investigate how droughts affect storage in 250 reservoirs across the conterminous U.S. (CONUS). We find that the maximum amount of water stored in reservoirs is decreasing, and that periods of unusually low storage are becoming longer, more severe, and more variable in (a) western and central CONUS reservoirs, and (b) reservoirs with primarily over‐year storage. Results suggest that reservoir storage has become less reliable and more vulnerable to larger deviations from desired storage patterns. These changes have coincided with ongoing shifts to the hydroclimate of CONUS, and with sedimentation further reducing available reservoir storage.

Abstract Background and Aims Given the significance of addressing neonatal mortality in pursuing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal on child health, research focus on this area is crucial. Despite the persistent high rates of neonatal mortality rate (NMR) in Bangladesh, there remains a notable lack of robust evidence addressing inequalities in NMR in the country. Therefore, this study aims to fill the knowledge gap by comprehensively investigating inequalities in NMR in Bangladesh. Methods The Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) data from 2000 to 2017 were analyzed. The equity stratifiers used to measure the inequalities were wealth status, mother's education, place of residence, and subnational region. Difference (D) and population attributable fraction (PAF) were absolute measures, whereas population attributable risk (PAR) and ratio (R) were relative measures of inequality. Statistical significance was considered by estimating 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for each estimate. Results A declining trend in NMR was found in Bangladesh, from 50.2 in 2000 to 31.9 deaths per 1000 live births in 2017. This study detected significant wealth‐driven (PAF: −20.6, 95% CI: −24.9, −16.3; PAR: −6.6, 95% CI: −7.9, −5.2), education‐related (PAF: −11.6, 95% CI: −13.4, −9.7; PAR: −3.7, 95% CI: −4.3, −3.1), and regional (PAF: −20.6, 95% CI: −27.0, −14.3; PAR: −6.6, 95% CI: −8.6, −4.6) disparities in NMR in all survey points. We also found a significant urban–rural inequality from 2000 to 2014, except in 2017. Both absolute and relative inequalities in NMR were observed; however, these inequalities decreased over time. Conclusion Significant variations in NMR across subgroups in Bangladesh highlight the need for comprehensive, and targeted interventions. Empowering women through improved access to economic resources and education may help address disparities in NMR in Bangladesh. Future research and policies should focus on developing strategies to address these disparities and promote equitable health outcomes for all newborns.

Abstract The forests of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) constitute a biodiversity hotspot and provide habitat to two globally threatened great apes, the Grauer's gorilla Gorilla beringei graueri and eastern chimpanzee Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii. Community‐based conservation activities may provide protection to these primates and their environment, supplementing the role of protected areas. We look at spatiotemporal trends in the ape populations that inhabit a community forest, the Nkuba Conservation Area (NCA), as trends in wildlife abundances and distributions may provide a first tentative measure of conservation impact. In the absence of a single systematic approach to gauge conservation effectiveness, we explore both temporal changes in ape abundances and spatial distributions as lines of evidence. Using line transect data, we estimate that between 1000 and 2200 apes, with comparable numbers of gorillas and chimpanzees, live in the NCA. In contrast to elsewhere in eastern DRC, we found no evidence of a declining ape population or shift in their distribution after the establishment of the NCA (~2012–2013). Spatial models revealed the presence of ape hotspots that remained spatially stable across study years (2013–2020). Practical implication. That apes in the NCA do not experience rapid declines is a cautious but optimistic first sign of the conservation potential of the NCA and its associated intended (i.e. conservation activities) and unintended (e.g. researcher presence) protection interventions.

Abstract Protected areas have been gazetted to protect natural resources and biodiversity, but evaluations of effectiveness rarely include measures of species population change. We compiled annual site‐level spending and elephant population data for 102 protected areas conserving either savannah (Loxodonta africana) or forest (Loxodonta cyclotis) elephants, which showed a median annual population decline of −0.78% across the protected areas. Site‐level population change was strongly associated with funding and government effectiveness. Annual funding deficits occurred in 78% of the protected areas, and when comparing necessary levels of annual spend to stabilize elephant populations, we estimate a US$1.5 billion annual funding deficit across all the protected areas. While financial investment can improve elephant conservation outcomes, there is still a need to identify where and how to best finance elephant poaching interventions, requiring a global commitment to improve the socioeconomic impacts of protected areas on local communities and reduce ivory demand.

Abstract Using model projections to study the emergence of observable climate signals presumes omniscient knowledge about the climate system. In reality, observational knowledge suffers from data quality and availability issues, for instance data gaps, changes in instrumentation, issues due to gridding and retrieval algorithms. Overlooking such deficiencies leads to misrepresentations of the time of emergence (ToE). We introduce a new definition of ToE that accounts for observational limitations, and show that significant corrections to the ToE may be necessary to achieve the same statistical confidence as would be afforded by omniscient knowledge. We also show how our method can inform future observational needs and observing systems design.

Abstract Dissertations are a foundational scientific product; they are the formative product that early‐career scientists create and share original knowledge. The methodological approaches used in dissertations vary with the research field. In plant ecology, these approaches include observations, experiments (field or controlled environment), literature reviews, theoretical approaches, or analyses of existing data (including “big data”). Recently, concerns have been raised about the rise of “big data” studies and the loss of observational and field‐based studies in ecology, but such trends have not been formally quantified. Therefore, we examined how the emphasis on each of these categories has changed over time and whether male and female authors differ in the methods employed. We found remarkable temporal consistency, with observational studies being dominant over the entire time span examined. There was an increase in the number of approaches employed per dissertation, with increases in analyses of databases and theoretical studies adding to rather than replacing traditional methodologies (like observations and field experiments). The representation of women increased over time. There were some differences in the approaches taken by men and women, which requires further investigation.

Abstract Objective During the COVID‐19 pandemic, elective surgeries faced cancelations due to quarantine measures. The objective of this study was to assess facial plastic and reconstructive surgery (FPRS) volume before, during, and after the height of the pandemic on a national scale. Methods The TriNetX Research Network identified 68,101,098 individuals aged 18+ with healthcare interactions from 2017 to 2022. Rates of common FPRS surgeries and procedures were compared during March–August of each year, aligning with the pandemic lockdown. Results Compared to immediately before the pandemic in 2019, the 2020 pandemic peak saw an overall surgical volume reduction of −36.8%, with specific surgeries decreasing significantly: rhinoplasty (−28.6%), septoplasty (−34.0%), rhytidectomy (−54.9%), blepharoplasty (−40.7%), brow lift (−43.8%), ectropion/entropion repair (−35.6%), repair of blepharoptosis (−45.6%), correction of lagophthalmos (−29.9%), correction of lid retraction (−36.8%), and lipectomy (−41.8%) (p

Abstract Objectives To evaluate whether the implementation of standardized care pathway (SCP) for patients with suspected urinary bladder cancer (UBC) was associated with changes in tumour characteristics. Additionally, the study aims to explore whether there was a shift in the selection of patients prioritized for immediate evaluation regarding suspicion of UBC. Materials and Methods The study included all patients diagnosed with UBC in the NU Hospital Group between 2010 and 2019. To evaluate changes associated with SCP, patients were divided into two diagnostic time periods, either before (2010–2015) or during (2016–2019) the implementation of the SCP. Abstract Aims Sodium‐glucose co‐transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have shown potential therapeutic benefits in heart failure (HF). However, data on their real‐world usage and benefits in acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) are limited. Methods and results We conducted a post hoc analysis of real‐world data from 1108 patients with ADHF admitted to Nihon University Itabashi Hospital (Tokyo, Japan) between 2018 and 2022. Patients were divided into two groups based on the prescription of SGLT2 inhibitors during hospitalization: an SGLT2 inhibitor group (SGLT2i group) (n = 289) and a non‐SGLT2i group (n = 819). The primary endpoints were death and rehospitalization for HF after discharge. The median age was 76 [interquartile range (IQR): 66, 83] years, and 732 patients (66%) were male. Data showed an increasing trend in the prescription of SGLT2 inhibitors since 2021. During a median follow‐up period of 366 days (IQR: 116, 614), 458 (41.3%) patients reached the primary endpoint. Abstract The state of biodiversity for most of the world is largely enigmatic due to a lack of long‐term population monitoring data. Citizen science programs could substantially contribute to resolving this data crisis, but there are noted concerns on whether methods can overcome the biases and imprecision inherent to aggregated opportunistic observations. We explicitly test this question by examining the temporal correlation of population time‐series estimated from opportunistic citizen science data and a rigorous fishery‐independent survey that concurrently sampled populations of coral‐reef fishes (n = 87) in Key Largo, Florida, USA, over 25 years. The majority of species exhibited positive temporal correlations between population time‐series, but survey congruence varied considerably amongst taxonomic and trait‐based groups. Overall, these results suggest that citizen scientists can be effective sentinels of ecological change, and that there may be substantial value in leveraging their observations to monitor otherwise data‐limited marine species.

Abstract The threat to biodiversity posed by urban expansion is well researched and supported. Since the late 1990s, the field of urban ecology has been expanding along with the developed landscapes it studies. Past reviews have shown unequal publication rates in urban ecology literature for taxonomic groups and research locations. Herein, we explore differences in the publication rate of urban studies by vertebrate groups, but also expand on previous investigations by broadening the scope of the literature searched, exploring trends in subtopics within the urban wildlife literature, identifying geographic patterns of such publications, and comparing the rate at which non‐native and threatened and endangered species are studied in urban settings. We used linear and segmented regression to assess publication rates and Fisher's exact tests for comparisons between groups. All vertebrate groups show an increasing proportion of urban studies through time, with urban avian studies accelerating most sharply and herpetofauna appearing to be understudied. Non‐native mammals are more studied than non‐native birds, and threatened and endangered herpetofauna and mammals are more likely to be studied than threatened and endangered birds in urban areas. The plurality of urban wildlife studies are found in North America, while there is a dearth of studies from Africa, Asia, and South America. Our results can help inform decisions of urban ecologists on how to better fill in knowledge gaps and bring a greater degree of equity into the field.

Background Population‐based data on heart failure (HF)‐related death in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) are lacking. We assessed HF‐related death in people with AF in the United States over the past 21 years and examined differences by age, sex, race, ethnicity, urbanization, and census region. Methods and Results Data were extracted from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide‐Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research to determine trends in age‐adjusted mortality rates per 100 000 people, due to HF‐related death among subjects with AF aged ≥15 years. To calculate nationwide annual trends, we assessed the average annual percent change (AAPC) and annual percent change with relative 95% CIs using joinpoint regression. Between 1999 and 2020, 916 685 HF‐related deaths (396 205 men and 520 480 women) occurred among US adults having a concomitant AF. The overall age‐adjusted mortality rates increased (AAPC: +4.1% [95% CI, 3.8–4.4]; P65 years was observed. Conclusions A worrying increase in the HF‐related mortality rate among patients with AF has been observed in the United States over the past 2 decades.

Background Over the past decade, major society guidelines have recommended the use of newer P2Y12 inhibitors over clopidogrel for those undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention for acute coronary syndrome. It is unclear what impact these recommendations had on clinical practice. Methods and Results All percutaneous coronary intervention procedures (n=534 210) for acute coronary syndrome in England and Wales (April 1, 2010, to March 31, 2022) were retrospectively analyzed, stratified by choice of preprocedural P2Y12 inhibitor (clopidogrel, ticagrelor, and prasugrel). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine odds ratios of receipt of ticagrelor and prasugrel (versus clopidogrel) over time, and predictors of their receipt. Overall, there was a significant increase in receipt of newer P2Y12 inhibitors from 2010 to 2020 (2022 versus 2010: ticagrelor odds ratio, 8.12 [95% CI, 7.67–8.60]; prasugrel odds ratio, 6.14 [95% CI, 5.53–6.81]), more so in ST‐segment–elevation myocardial infarction than non–ST‐segment–elevation acute coronary syndrome indication. Abstract Objective In‐office ablation of the posterior nasal nerve (PNN) has emerged as an effective treatment option for chronic rhinitis patients. This study explored questions patients commonly search online regarding this therapy and the quality of content available. Study Design A retrospective analysis of online search criteria and sources was performed with subsequent analysis of results. Setting Search and data acquisition was in September of 2023. Methods Most common search terms related to cryotherapy and radiofrequency neurolysis of the PNN were identified with associated People Also Ask (PAA) questions. Questions were categorized and organized into subtopics and sources evaluated using readability and quality metrics. Results A total of 255 unique PAA questions and 175 unique websites were identified. The most common subtopics were related to facts about chronic rhinitis (26.7%) and rhinitis treatment options (25.1%). Nearly a quarter (24.3%) of websites were from commercial sources. Quality metrics indicate difficult‐to‐read and low‐quality materials. Conclusion Existing online resources need improvement to provide patients material that is easier to read. Physicians counseling patients should be aware of these areas for adequate shared decision making.

Background In the wake of pandemic‐related health decline and health care disruptions, there are concerns that previous gains for cardiovascular risk factors may have stalled or reversed. Population‐level excess burden of drug‐treated diabetes and hypertension during the pandemic compared with baseline is not well characterized. We evaluated the change in incident prescription claims for antihyperglycemics and antihypertensives before versus during the pandemic. Methods and Results In this retrospective, serial, cross‐sectional, population‐based study, we used interrupted time series analyses to examine changes in the age‐ and sex‐standardized monthly rate of incident prescriptions for antihyperglycemics and antihypertensives in patients aged ≥66 years in Ontario, Canada, before the pandemic (April 2014 to March 2020) compared with during the pandemic (July 2020 to November 2022). Incident claim was defined as the first prescription filled for any medication in these classes. The characteristics of patients with incident prescriptions of antihyperglycemics (n=151 888) or antihypertensives (n=368 123) before the pandemic were comparable with their pandemic counterparts (antihyperglycemics, n=97 015; antihypertensives, n=146 524). Before the pandemic, monthly rates of incident prescriptions were decreasing (−0.03 per 10 000 individuals [95% CI, −0.04 to −0.01] for antihyperglycemics; −0.14 [95% CI, −0.18 to −0.10] for antihypertensives). After July 2020, monthly rates increased (postinterruption trend 0.31 per 10 000 individuals [95% CI, 0.28–0.34] for antihyperglycemics; 0.19 [95% CI, 0.14–0.23] for antihypertensives). Conclusions Population‐level increases in new antihyperglycemic and antihypertensive prescriptions during the pandemic reversed prepandemic declines and were sustained for >2 years. Our findings are concerning for current and future cardiovascular health.

Abstract This study aimed to visualize the knowledge structure and research trends in neonatal sepsis research through bibliometric methods. Articles and reviews regarding neonatal sepsis from 2002 to 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. CiteSpace software was used to visualize the knowledge network of countries/regions, institutions, authors, journals, keywords, and references in this field. Altogether, 2314 publications were identified. During the study period, the number of publications increased yearly. The USA is the leading country in neonatal sepsis research. Duke University was the most prolific institution, with Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal and BASU S being the most prolific journal and author in the field, respectively. Pathogen, diagnosis, and management were the main topics of research, and future studies may concentrate on novel diagnostic biomarkers and judicious use of antibiotics. In summary, the results of our bibliometric analysis revealed views on the current situation and trends of neonatal sepsis research for the first time. This study may provide guidance for promoting research on neonatal sepsis.

Abstract The high latitude Southern Hemisphere (SH) is an important region for Earth's climate. Ocean heat content, cryosphere interactions, Antarctic bottom water development and the cloud‐albedo feedbacks need to be understood to form a complete picture of the climate system. However, the high latitude SH is one of the most under‐observed regions due to its remoteness. The advent of satellites and reanalyses have improved our monitoring of this region. Some previous studies observed an increase in precipitation over the SH high latitudes, however we argue that some of the trends in commonly used data sets may be artifacts. We use regression analysis of trends in precipitation and the Southern Annular Mode to contrast these relationships in satellite and reanalysis products, and to evaluate precipitation over the SH. We suggest that sensor changes and the lack of in situ data available for calibration may be responsible for unusual precipitation patterns especially around 65°S.

Abstract Background Non‐Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounts for 90% of all malignant lymphomas. This study aimed to evaluate the global incidence, mortality, associated risk factors, and temporal trends of NHL by sex, age, and country. Methods Data from 185 countries globally were used for analysis. NHL incidence and mortality were collected via the GLOBOCAN (2020), CI5 series I‐X, WHO mortality database, the Nordic Cancer Registries, and the SEER Program. The WHO Global Health Observatory provided country‐level, age‐standardized prevalence of lifestyle and metabolic risk factors. Trends were examined and reported based on average annual percentage change (AAPC) calculated using Joinpoint regression analysis. Incidence and AAPC are based on data for the last 10 years across countries. Results Globally, age‐standardized incidence and mortality rates for NHL were recorded at 5.8 and 2.6 per 100,000 individuals, respectively. At country‐level, NHL incidence was significantly associated with various factors, including HDI (Human Development Index), GDP per capita, prevalence of tobacco and alcohol consumption, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, hypertension, diabetes and hypercholesterolaemia. Rising trend in NHL incidence was observed, with the highest increase recorded in Estonia (AAPCmale = 4.15, AAPCfemale = 5.14), Belarus (AAPCfemale = 5.13), and Lithuania (AAPCfemale = 4.68). While overall NHL mortality has been decreasing, certain populations experienced increased mortality over the decade. In Thailand, AAPC for mortality was 31.28% for males and 30.26% for females. Estonia saw an AAPC of 6.46% for males, while Slovakia experienced an AAPC of 4.24% for females. Colombia's AAPC was 1.29% for males and 1.51% for females. Conclusions This study indicates a rising trend of NHL incidence over the past decade‐ particularly in developed countries, older males, and younger populations. Further research should investigate deeper insights into specific etiology and prognosis of NHL across subtypes, and potential contributors towards these epidemiologic trends.

Background Out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrest survival rates have improved over time. This study established whether improvements were similar for women and men, and to what extent resuscitation characteristics or in‐hospital procedures contributed to sex differences in temporal trends. Methods and Results This retrospective cohort study included 3386 women and 8564 men from North Holland, the Netherlands, who experienced an out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrest from a cardiac cause in 2005 to 2017. Yearly rates of 30‐day survival and secondary outcomes were calculated. Sex differences in temporal trends were evaluated with age‐adjusted Poisson regression analysis, including interaction for sex and out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrest year. Resuscitation characteristics and in‐hospital procedures were added to the model, and a spline at 2013 was considered. Chordoma is a rare tumor, but has a serious effect on the quality of life of patients. This study aims to assess the overall knowledge structure and trends in the development of chordoma research using a bibliometric analysis and visualization tool. Research datasets were acquired from the Web of Science. VOS viewer and CiteSpace visualization software were used to demonstrate collaborations and correlations. Annual trends in publications, distribution, H‐index status, co‐authorship status, and research hotspots were analyzed. A total of 1844 publications from 2012 to 2022 were included. The number of chordoma‐related publications increased year by year. The United States contributed the most publications (717) and had the highest total citations (10130) and H‐index (50), followed by China. The United States was also the country most frequently involved in international cooperation. The most productive organization involved in chordoma research was Massachusetts General Hospital. World Neurosurgery (114) published the most papers on chordoma. Hornicek FJ was the most productive author over the last decade (41). Initially, diagnosis and the location of onset captured the attention of the research society. Quality of life, risk factors, disability, minimally invasive surgical techniques, molecular targeted therapy, and radiotherapy technology are the research hotspots in recent years. Indeed, this study provides important insights into the overall landscape of chordoma research and also contributes to the further investigation of the international frontier of chordoma.

Abstract Objectives In 2021 the UK government announced a new obesity policy requiring large out‐of‐home food outlets to provide mandatory in‐store calorie labeling on food and drink items. Public acceptability and engagement with obesity policies could influence the level of impact on wider public health particularly with population‐level policies such as calorie labeling. This study aimed to examine public responses and awareness of the policy using social media (Twitter) comments and Google trends data. Methods This study examined responses to social media posts on Twitter (tweets) from the UK Department of Health and Social Care detailing the policy, implementation date and post‐implementation information about the policy's enforcement. The sentiments of the tweets were coded and the number of likes and replies extracted. This study utilized google trends to examine public awareness of the policy by extracting weekly relative search volume for relevant phrases such as “calorie labeling.” Results From the 276 replies/quote‐tweet extracted, the majority expressed a negative sentiment toward the policy (N = 197/71.4%). There were fewer tweets expressing a positive sentiment (N = 25/8.7%) and a neutral/no sentiment (N = 54/19.6%). There was no difference in the number of “likes” or retweets between tweets expressing positive or negative sentiments. Five themes were identified expressing negative sentiments (most common being negative impacts on eating disorders). Google trends data revealed increased searches for “calorie labels/labeling” during the week of the policy enforcement compared to previous weeks in the last 5 years but no significant differences in searches for specific menu calorie labeling. Conclusions This analysis revealed negative sentiment toward and increased searching of calorie labeling information during the announcement and implementation of the 2021 mandatory calorie labeling policy in England. A greater understanding of public responses to calorie labeling policies may help tailor future policies and public communication strategies.

Abstract Background Survival trends help to evaluate the progress made to reduce the burden of cancer. The aim was to estimate the trends in 5‐year relative survival of patients diagnosed with breast, prostate, lung, colorectal cancer and skin melanoma in the time periods 1980–1989, 1990–1999, 2000–2009 and 2010–2015 in the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland. Furthermore, we investigated relative survival differences by TNM stage and age group. Methods Data from the Cancer Registry of Zurich was used from 1980 to and including 2015, including incident cases of breast (N = 26,060), prostate (N= 23,858), colorectal (N= 19,305), lung cancer (N= 16,858) and skin melanoma (N= 9780) with follow‐up until 31 December 2020. The cohort approach was used to estimate 5‐year relative survival. Results The 5‐year relative survival increased significantly between 1980 and 1989, and 2010 and2015: from 0.70 to 0.89 for breast, from 0.60 to 0.92 for prostate, from 0.09 to 0.23 (men) and from 0.10 to 0.27 (women) for lung, from 0.46 to 0.66 (men) and from 0.48 to 0.68 (women) for colorectal cancer, and from 0.74 to 0.94 (men) and from 0.86 to 0.96 (women) for skin melanoma. Survival for stage IV tumors was considerably lower compared to lower‐staged tumors for all cancer types. Furthermore, relative survival was similar for the age groups

Abstract Background Lip, oral and pharyngeal cancers make up a small percentage of total cancer cases worldwide and have reported lower rates of cancer‐related deaths globally in 2020, but their 5‐year survival rate in either early or advanced stages is different. The study evaluated the global incidence, mortality, risk factors, and temporal trends by age, gender, and geographical locations of lip, oral cavity, and pharyngeal cancer. Methods Incidence and mortality rates were extracted from Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5) volumes I‐XI, the Nordic Cancer Registries (NORDCAN), the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program, and the WHO IARC mortality database. Joinpoint regression was used to calculate the Average Annual Percentage Change to examine trends. Results The highest incidence rates were found in Melanesia and South‐Central Asia and mortality rates were 8.2 and 7.5. Risk factors associated with incidence and mortality included HDI, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, poor diet, and chronic health conditions such as hypertension. Increasing trends of incidence and mortality were observed in females from Malta; males aged 50 and above from the United Kingdom, and females aged 50 and above from Slovakia reporting the largest increase. Conclusions Although global incidence and mortality trends reported an overall decrease, significant increases were found for older age groups and female subjects. Incidence increase may be due to the growing prevalence of lifestyle, metabolic risk factors, and HPV infections, especially in developed countries.

Abstract Background Esophageal cancer survival is poor worldwide, though there is some variation. Differences in the distribution of anatomical sub‐site and morphological sub‐type may help explain international differences in survival for all esophageal cancers combined. We estimated survival by anatomic sub‐site and morphological sub‐type to understand further the impact of topography and morphology on international comparisons of esophageal cancer survival. Methods We estimated age‐standardized one‐year and five‐year net survival among adults (15‐99 years) diagnosed with esophageal cancer in each of 60 participating countries to monitor survival trends by calendar period of diagnosis (2000‐2004, 2005‐2009, 2010‐2014), sub‐site, morphology, and sex. Results For adults diagnosed during 2010‐2014, tumors in the lower third of the esophagus were the most common, followed by tumors of overlapping sub‐site and sub‐site not otherwise specified. The proportion of squamous cell carcinomas diagnosed during 2010‐2014 was generally higher in Asian countries (50%‐90%), while adenocarcinomas were more common in Europe, North America and Oceania (50%‐60%). From 2000‐2004 to 2010‐2014, the proportion of squamous cell carcinoma generally decreased, and the proportion of adenocarcinoma increased. Over time, there were few improvements in age‐standardized five‐year survival for each sub‐site. Age‐standardized one‐year survival was highest in Japan for both squamous cell carcinoma (67.7%) and adenocarcinoma (69.0%), ranging between 20%‐60% in most other countries. Age‐standardized five‐year survival from squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma was similar for most countries included, around 15%‐20% for adults diagnosed during 2010‐2014, though international variation was wider for squamous cell carcinoma. In most countries, survival for both squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma increased by less than 5% between 2000‐2004 and 2010‐2014. Conclusions Esophageal cancer survival remains poor in many countries. The distributions of sub‐site and morphological sub‐type vary between countries, but these differences do not fully explain international variation in esophageal cancer survival.

Abstract Rapid advances in the field of movement ecology have led to increasing insight into both the population‐level abundance patterns and individual‐level behaviour of migratory species. Despite this progress, research questions that require scaling individual‐level understanding of the behaviour of migrating organisms to the population level remain difficult to investigate. To bridge this gap, we introduce a generalizable framework for training full‐annual cycle individual‐based models of migratory movements by combining information from tracking studies and species occurrence records. Focusing on migratory birds, we call this method: Models of Individual Movement of Avian Species (MIMAS). We implement MIMAS to design individual‐based models of avian migration that are trained using previously published weekly occurrence maps and fit via Approximate Bayesian Computation. MIMAS models leverage individual‐ and population‐level information to faithfully represent continental‐scale migration patterns. Models can be trained successfully for species even when little existing individual‐level data is available for parameterization by relying on population‐level information. In contrast to existing mathematical models of migration, MIMAS explicitly represents and estimates behavioural attributes of migrants. MIMAS can additionally be used to simulate movement over consecutive migration seasons, and models can be easily updated or validated as new empirical data on migratory behaviours becomes available. MIMAS can be applied to a variety of research questions that require representing individual movement at large scales. We demonstrate three applied uses for MIMAS: estimating population‐specific migratory phenology, predicting the spatial patterns and magnitude of ectoparasite dispersal by migrants, and simulating the spread of a pathogen across the annual cycle of a migrant species. Currently, MIMAS can easily be used to build models for hundreds of migratory landbird species but can also be adapted in the future to build models of other types of migratory animals.

Abstract Background There are well‐established disparities in colorectal cancer (CRC) outcomes between White and Black patients; however, assessments of CRC disparities for other racial/ethnic groups are limited. Methods The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database identified patients aged 50–74 years with CRC adenocarcinoma from 2000 to 2019. Trends in age‐adjusted incidence rates were computed by stage at diagnosis and subsite across five broad race/ethnic groups (White, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander [API], American Indian/Alaskan Native [AIAN], and Hispanic) and four API subgroups (East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander) Multivariable logistic regression evaluated associations between race/ethnicity and diagnosis stage. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models assessed differences in cause‐specific survival (CSS). Results Hispanic, AIAN, Southeast Asian, Pacific Islander, and Black patients were 3% to 28% more likely than Whites to be diagnosed with distant stage CRC, whereas East Asian and South Asians had similar or lower risk of distant stage CRC. From Cox regression analysis, Black, AIAN, and Pacific Islanders also experienced worse CSS, while East Asian and South Asian patient groups experienced better CSS. No significant differences in CSS were observed among Hispanic, Southeast Asian, and White patients. Abstract Objectives Resection of the middle turbinate (MT) during endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) has been a controversial topic among otolaryngologists for many years. Some studies advocate resection and have shown improved outcomes postoperatively, while studies favoring preservation show a decreased incidence of postoperative complications. The current practice pattern regarding this subject is unknown. The goal of this study was to learn the current practice of MT resection during ESS among otolaryngologists. Method We performed an electronic anonymous survey of practicing otolaryngologists. Results We found that the majority of the 252 responders stated that they will perform an MT resection in certain clinical situations, while there is a small subset that advocates never resecting the MT for inflammatory sinus disease (n = 6, 2.4%). Participants were significantly more likely to perform MT resection in patients undergoing revision compared to primary ESS for all conditions included. The complication of greatest concern among participants was iatrogenic frontal sinus obstruction, while empty nose was of the least concern. The majority of participants responded that MT resection was of extreme or moderate benefit for improved visualization and drug delivery postoperatively. When compared to general otolaryngologists, fellowship‐trained rhinologists were less concerned about potential complications following MT resection and were more likely to perceive an extreme or moderate benefit from turbinate resection postoperatively. Conclusion There remains debate over MT resection among otolaryngologists, but the results of this study show that the majority of participating otolaryngologists will perform a resection in certain clinical situations.

Abstract Objective To analyze the impact, performance, degree of specialization, and collaboration patterns of the worldwide scientific production on tissue engineering in otorhinolaryngology at the level of countries and institutions. Methods Two different techniques were used, performance and science mapping analyses, using as samples all the available documents regarding tissue engineering focused on otorhinolaryngology applications. The dataset was retrieved from the Core Collection of the Web of Science database from 1900 to 2020. Social structure was analyzed using science mapping analysis with VOSviewer software. Results The United States was the main producer, followed by Germany, and Japan. Malaysia and Germany had the highest Relative Specialization Index, indicating their greater relative interest in this area compared to other countries. The social structure analysis showed that the United States and Germany had significant co‐authorship relationships with other countries. The University of California System, Kyoto University, and Harvard University were the leading institutions producing literature in this field. These latter two institutions showed the largest number of collaborations, although most of them were with institutions within their own country. There was a lack of connections between different communities of research. Conclusion The United States is the main country driving progress in this research area, housing the most notable institutions. However, significant collaborations between these research centers are currently lacking. Encouraging greater cooperation among these institutions and their researchers would promote the exchange of knowledge, ultimately facilitating and accelerating advancements in this field.

Background Current guidelines recommend revascularization in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM). However, there is limited information about the trends and outcomes of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in ischemic cardiomyopathy patients with multivessel coronary artery disease. Methods and Results Using New Jersey state mandatory registries, 8083 patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy with CABG or PCI revascularization for multivessel coronary artery disease from 2007 to 2018 were included in the analysis. Joinpoint regression and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the annual percentage change in trends and predictors of the 30‐day mortality rate, respectively. A decline in CABG procedures was observed from 2007 to 2011 (annual percentage change, −11.5%; P=0.003), followed by stabilization. The PCI trend remained unchanged from 2007 to 2010 and then increased significantly (annual percentage change, 3.2%; P=0.02). In the subsample of patients with proximal left anterior descending artery plus circumflex and right coronary artery, CABG was a predominant procedure until 2011, and the proportion of both procedures did not differ thereafter. Abstract It is well established that the shallow branch of the Brewer‐Dobson circulation accelerates in a warming climate due to enhanced wave drag in the subtropical lower stratosphere. This has been linked to the strengthening of the upper flanks of the subtropical jets. However, the seasonality of the zonal wind trends, peaking in the winter hemisphere, is opposite to that of the Eliassen‐Palm flux convergence trends, peaking in summer. We investigate the seasonality in the wave drag trends and find a different behavior for each hemisphere. The Shepherd and McLandress (2011, https://doi.org/10.1175/2010jas3608.1) mechanism, involving transient wave dissipation at higher levels following the rise of the critical lines, is found to maximize in austral summer. On the other hand, in the Northern Hemisphere the wave drag increase peaks in summer primarily due to the changes in the stationary planetary waves (monsoonal circulations) associated with enhanced deep convection.

Abstract Introduction The current study, focusing on a significant US (United States) colorectal cancer (CRC) burden, employs machine learning for predicting future rates among young population. Methods CDC WONDER data from 1999 to 2022 was analyzed for CRC‐related mortality in patients younger than 56 years. Temporal trends in age‐adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) were assessed via Joinpoint software. Future mortality rates were forecasted using an optimal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model. Results From 1999 to 2022, we observed 150,908 deaths with CRC listed as the underlying cause, predominantly in males, with an upward trend in AAMR. The ARIMA model projects an increase in CRC mortality by 2035, estimating an average annual percent change (AAPC) of 1.3% overall, 1% for females, and 1.5% for males. Conclusion Our study findings emphasize the need for more robust preventive measures to reduce future CRC mortality among younger population. These results have significant implications for public health policies, particularly for males under 56, and underscore the importance of early screening and lifestyle modifications.

Abstract Aim This study is set to determine the main topics of the nursing field and to show the changing perspectives over time by analysing the abstracts of several major nursing research journals using text mining methodology. Design Text mining and network analysis. Methods Text analysis combines automatic and manual operations to identify patterns in unstructured data. Detailed searches covering 1998–2021 were conducted in PubMed archives to collect articles from six nursing journals: Journal of Advanced Nursing, International Journal of Nursing Studies, Western Journal of Nursing Research, Nursing Research, Journal of Nursing Scholarship and Research in Nursing and Health. This study uses a four‐phase text mining and network approach, gathering text data and cleaning, preprocessing, text analysis and advanced analyses. Analyses and data visualization were performed using Endnote, JMP, Microsoft Excel, Tableau and VOSviewer versions. From six journals, 17,581 references in PubMed were combined into one EndNote file. Due to missing abstract information, 2496 references were excluded from the study. The remaining references (n = 15,085) were used for the text mining analyses. Results Eighteen subjects were determined into two main groups; research method topics and nursing research topics. The most striking topics are qualitative research, concept analysis, advanced practice in the downtrend, and literature search, statistical analysis, randomized control trials, quantitative research, nurse practice environment, risk assessment and nursing science. According to the network analysis results, nursing satisfaction and burnout and nursing practice environment are highly correlated and represent 10% of the total corpus. This study contributes in various ways to the field of nursing research enhanced by text mining. The study findings shed light on researchers becoming more aware of the latest research status, sub‐fields and trends over the years, identifying gaps and planning future research agendas. Abstract Background As the onset of the COVID‐19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown in March 2020, reports indicate reduced physical activity (PA), increased sitting time (ST), and higher stress in various groups. It remains uncertain if these patterns persist in college students. This study aimed to discover trends in vigorous PA (VPA), moderate PA (MPA), light PA (LPA), ST, and stress among college students from 2020 to early 2022, spanning 2 years. Methods Using a repeated cross‐sectional design, this study involved three online surveys in Summer and Fall 2020, and Winter 2021, respectively. Participants recalled pre‐COVID‐19 information in the first two periods and reported current information during COVID in all three periods, outlining four time points: Before‐COVID and During‐COVID times 1, 2, and 3. Results This study included 2163 students from a large Western university. All types of PA decreased from the start of the pandemic to late 2021; however, increases toward pre‐pandemic levels in MPA and LPA were found in early 2022. Also, activity shifted from VPA to MPA and LPA. Although ST and perceived stress (PS) surged in the pandemic's first year, they began decreasing toward pre‐COVID levels in early 2022. Conclusion The study indicates a decline in PA during the peak of the pandemic, followed by a recent return to almost pre‐COVID levels. Additionally, elevated ST and PS in early pandemic have reduced by the third year. As society begins to live with a new COVID‐normal, there must be adaptations to maintain PA and promote mental well‐being.

Abstract Legume crops are widely grown worldwide and a primary source of proteins across many least developed countries. These food crops are inherently produced in environmentally sustainable manner and are also an economical source of plant‐based proteins versus animal‐based proteins. The nutrient composition of legumes is very rich, that is, high content of protein, fiber, and bioactive compounds and relatively lower carbohydrates than cereal crops. Although food legumes are a staple in more than 70 countries mostly in Asian, African, and South American regions, the per capita consumption in the Western countries continues to be low in spite of legumes' demonstrated health benefits. However, emerging consumer trends and preferences toward heathy foods, animal protein alternatives, and environmental concerns can enhance the consumption of legume‐based foods. The functional attributes of legume ingredients (e.g., thickening, water‐holding index, gelation, emulsification, and foaming capacity) make legumes suitable for replacing proteins from other sources. The development and marketing of legume‐based ingredients for use in various value‐added food applications have been increasing. The value‐added use of pulse protein isolates and concentrates is expanding fast with substantial use as meat extenders/replacers and meat analogs, milk substitutes, and gluten‐free applications. To increase the utilization of legumes, including legume‐based foods, it is important to focus on research and development efforts that promote “easy‐to‐cook”/prepare foods for consumers, who often avoid legumes due to long cooking times. Addressing this aspect of convenience is particularly critical in developed countries due to the busy lifestyles of consumers and potentially increase legume consumption.

Abstract This study introduces a novel approach to leverage high‐resolution historical climate data and opportunistically collected historical species occurrence data for detecting adaptive responses to global change. We applied this procedure to the temperature data and the most comprehensive Iberian dataset of dung beetle occurrences as an illustrative example. To understand how populations of different species are responding, we devised a procedure that compares the temporal trend of spatial and temperature variables at the locations and times of all the occurrence data collection (overall trend) with the specific temporal trends among the occurrences of each species. The prevalence of various species responses is linked to life history or taxonomic characteristics, enabling the identification of key factors influencing the propensity to experience different effects from climate change. Our findings suggest that nearly half of the Iberian dung beetle species may be adversely affected by temperature increases, with a geographic shift being the most common response. The results generated through the proposed methodology should be regarded as preliminary information, serving to formulate hypotheses about the diverse responses of species to climate change and aiding in the selection of candidate species capable of coping with challenges posed by changing temperatures.
