The irregularity strength of a graph $G$, $s(G)$, is the least $k$ admitting a $\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$-weighting of the edges of $G$ assuring distinct weighted degrees of all vertices, or equivalently the least possible maximal edge multiplicity in an irregular multigraph obtained of $G$ via multiplying some of its edges. The most well-known open problem concerning this graph invariant is the conjecture posed in 1987 by Faudree and Lehel that there exists a constant $C$ such that $s(G)\leq \frac{n}{d}+C$ for each $d$-regular graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and $d\geq 2$ (while a straightforward counting argument yields $s(G)\geq \frac{n+d-1}{d}$). The best known results towards this imply that $s(G)\leq 6\lceil\frac{n}{d}\rceil$ for every $d$-regular graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and $d\geq 2$, while $s(G)\leq (4+o(1))\frac{n}{d}+4$ if $d\geq n^{0.5}\ln n$. We show that the conjecture of Faudree and Lehel holds asymptotically in the cases when $d$ is neither very small nor very close to $n$. We in particular prove that for large enough $n$ and $d\in [\ln^8n,\frac{n}{\ln^3 n}]$, $s(G)\leq \frac{n}{d}(1+\frac{8}{\ln n})$, and thereby we show that $s(G) = \frac{n}{d}(1+o(1))$ then. A Latin square has six conjugate Latin squares obtained by uniformly permuting its (row, column, symbol) triples. We say that a Latin square has conjugate symmetry if at least two of its six conjugates are equal. We enumerate Latin squares with conjugate symmetry and classify them according to several common notions of equivalence. We also do similar enumerations under additional hypotheses, such as assuming the Latin square is reduced, diagonal, idempotent or unipotent. Our data corrected an error in earlier literature and suggested several patterns that we then found proofs for, including (1) The number of isomorphism classes of semisymmetric idempotent Latin squares of order $n$ equals the number of isomorphism classes of semisymmetric unipotent Latin squares of order $n+1$, and (2) Suppose $A$ and $B$ are totally symmetric Latin squares of order $n\not\equiv0\bmod3$. If $A$ and $B$ are paratopic then $A$ and $B$ are isomorphic.

Totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions (TSSCPPs) are boxed plane partitions with the maximum possible symmetry. We use the well-known representation of TSSCPPs as a dimer model on a honeycomb graph enclosed in one-twelfth of a hexagon with free boundary to express them as perfect matchings of a family of non-bipartite planar graphs. Our main result is that the edges of the TSSCPPs form a Pfaffian point process, for which we give explicit formulas for the inverse Kasteleyn matrix. When studying a graded module $M$ over the Cox ring of a smooth projective toric variety $X$, there are two standard types of resolutions commonly used to glean information: free resolutions of $M$ and vector bundle resolutions of its sheafification. Each approach comes with its own challenges. There is geometric information that free resolutions fail to encode, while vector bundle resolutions can resist study using algebraic and combinatorial techniques. Recently, Berkesch, Erman, and Smith introduced virtual resolutions, which capture desirable geometric information and are also amenable to algebraic and combinatorial study. The theory of virtual resolutions includes a notion of a virtually Cohen--Macaulay property, though tools for assessing which modules are virtually Cohen--Macaulay have only recently started to be developed. In this paper, we continue this research program in two related ways. The first is that, when $X$ is a product of projective spaces, we produce a large new class of virtually Cohen--Macaulay Stanley--Reisner rings, which we show to be virtually Cohen--Macaulay via explicit constructions of appropriate virtual resolutions reflecting the underlying combinatorial structure. The second is that, for an arbitrary smooth projective toric variety $X$, we develop homological tools for assessing the virtual Cohen--Macaulay property. Some of these tools give exclusionary criteria, and others are constructive methods for producing suitably short virtual resolutions. Let $k \geq 2$ be an integer. Kouider and Lonc proved that the vertex set of every graph $G$ with $n \geq n_0(k)$ vertices and minimum degree at least $n/k$ can be covered by $k - 1$ cycles. Our main result states that for every $\alpha > 0$ and $p = p(n) \in (0, 1]$, the same conclusion holds for graphs $G$ with minimum degree $(1/k + \alpha)np$ that are sparse in the sense that \[ e_G(X,Y) \leq p|X||Y| + o(np\sqrt{|X||Y|}/\log^3 n) \qquad \forall X,Y\subseteq V(G). \] In particular, this allows us to determine the local resilience of random and pseudorandom graphs with respect to having a vertex cover by a fixed number of cycles. An even (respectively, odd) hole in a graph is an induced cycle with even (respectively, odd) length that is at least four. Bienstock [DM 1991 and 1992] proved that detecting an even (respectively, odd) hole containing a given vertex is NP-complete. Conforti, Chornu\'ejols, Kappor, and Vu\v{s}kovi\'{c} [FOCS 1997] gave the first known polynomial-time algorithm to determine whether a graph contains even holes. Chudnovsky, Kawarabayashi, and Seymour [JGT 2005] estimated that Conforti et al.'s algorithm runs in $O(n^{40})$ time on an $n$-vertex graph and reduced the required time to $O(n^{31})$. Subsequently, da~Silva and Vu\v{s}kovi\'{c}~[JCTB 2013], Chang and Lu [JCTB 2017], and Lai, Lu, and Thorup [STOC 2020] improved the time to $O(n^{19})$, $O(n^{11})$, and $O(n^9)$, respectively. The tractability of determining whether a graph contains odd holes has been open for decades until the algorithm of Chudnovsky, Scott, Seymour, and Spirkl [JACM 2020] that runs in $O(n^9)$ time, which Lai et al. also reduced to $O(n^8)$. By extending Chudnovsky et al.'s techniques for detecting odd holes, Chudnovsky, Scott, and Seymour [Combinatorica 2020 to appear] (respectively, [arXiv 2020]) ensured the tractability of finding a long (respectively, shortest) odd hole. They also ensured the NP-hardness of finding a longest odd hole, whose reduction also works for finding a longest even hole. Recently, Cook and Seymour ensured the tractability of finding a long even hole. An intriguing missing piece is the tractability of finding a shortest even hole, left open for at least 15 years by, e.g., Chudnovsky et al. [JGT 2005] and Johnson [TALG 2005]. We establish an approximate zero-one law for sentences of continuous logic over finite metric spaces of diameter at most $1$. We study tight projective 2-designs in three different settings. In the complex setting, Zauner's conjecture predicts the existence of a tight projective 2-design in every dimension. Pandey, Paulsen, Prakash, and Rahaman recently proposed an approach to make quantitative progress on this conjecture in terms of the entanglement breaking rank of a certain quantum channel. We show that this quantity is equal to the size of the smallest weighted projective 2-design. Next, in the finite field setting, we introduce a notion of projective 2-designs, we characterize when such projective 2-designs are tight, and we provide a construction of such objects. Finally, in the quaternionic setting, we show that every tight projective 2-design for H^d determines an equi-isoclinic tight fusion frame of d(2d-1) subspaces of R^d(2d+1) of dimension 3.

A large number of NP-hard graph problems are solvable in XP time when parameterized by some width parameter. Hence, when solving problems on special graph classes, it is helpful to know if the graph class under consideration has bounded width. In this paper we consider mim-width, a particularly general width parameter that has a number of algorithmic applications whenever a decomposition is "quickly computable" for the graph class under consideration. We start by extending the toolkit for proving (un)boundedness of mim-width of graph classes. By combining our new techniques with known ones we then initiate a systematic study into bounding mim-width from the perspective of hereditary graph classes, and make a comparison with clique-width, a more restrictive width parameter that has been well studied. We prove that for a given graph H, the class of H-free graphs has bounded mim-width if and only if it has bounded clique-width. We show that the same is not true for (H₁,H₂)-free graphs. We identify several general classes of (H₁,H₂)-free graphs having unbounded clique-width, but bounded mim-width, illustrating the power of mim-width. Moreover, we show that a branch decomposition of constant mim-width can be found in polynomial time, for these classes. Hence, as mentioned, these results have algorithmic implications: when the input is restricted to such a class of (H₁,H₂)-free graphs, many problems become polynomial-time solvable, including classical problems such as k-Colouring and Independent Set, domination-type problems known as LC-VSVP problems, and distance versions of LC-VSVP problems, to name just a few. We also prove a number of new results showing that, for certain H₁ and H₂, the class of (H₁,H₂)-free graphs has unbounded mim-width. Boundedness of clique-width implies boundedness of mim-width. By combining our results, which give both new bounded and unbounded cases for mim-width, with the known bounded cases for clique-width, we present summary theorems of the current state of the art for the boundedness of mim-width for (H₁,H₂)-free graphs. In particular, we classify the mim-width of (H₁,H₂)-free graphs for all pairs (H₁,H₂) with |V(H₁)| + |V(H₂)| ≤ 8. In his paper "Kings in Bipartite Hypertournaments" (Graphs $\&$ Combinatorics 35, 2019), Petrovic stated two conjectures on 4-kings in multipartite hypertournaments. We prove one of these conjectures and give counterexamples for the other.

We determine, up to a multiplicative constant, the optimal number of random edges that need to be added to a $k$-graph $H$ with minimum vertex degree $\Omega(n^{k-1})$ to ensure an $F$-factor with high probability, for any $F$ that belongs to a certain class $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-graphs, which includes, e.g., all $k$-partite $k$-graphs, $K_4^{(3)-}$ and the Fano plane. In this paper we consider the expansion properties and the spectrum of the combinatorial Laplace operator of a $d$-dimensional Linial-Meshulam random simplicial complex, above the cohomological connectivity threshold. We consider the spectral gap of the Laplace operator and the Cheeger constant as this was introduced by Parzanchevski, Rosenthal and Tessler ($Combinatorica$ 36, 2016). We show that with high probability the spectral gap of the random simplicial complex as well as the Cheeger constant are both concentrated around the minimum co-degree of among all $d-1$-faces. We investigate the combinatorial structure of subspaces of the exterior algebra of a finite-dimensional real vector space, working in parallel with the extremal combinatorics of hypergraphs. Using initial monomials, projections of the underlying vector space onto subspaces, and the interior product, we find analogues of local and global LYM inequalities, the Erd\H{o}s-Ko-Rado theorem, and the Ahlswede-Khachatrian bound for $t$-intersecting hypergraphs. Using these tools, we prove a new extension of the Two Families Theorem of Bollob\'{a}s, giving a weighted bound for subspace configurations satisfying a skew cross-intersection condition. The cyclic matching sequenceability of a simple graph $G$, denoted $\mathrm{cms}(G)$, is the largest integer $s$ for which there exists a cyclic ordering of the edges of $G$ so that every set of $s$ consecutive edges forms a matching. Recently, Huang showed that every $(2^{n-1}+1)$-vertex induced subgraph of the $n$-dimensional hypercube has maximum degree at least $\sqrt{n}$ in [Annals of Mathematics, 190 (2019), 949--955]. In this paper, we discuss the induced subgraphs of Cartesian product graphs and semi-strong product graphs to generalize Huang's result. Let $\Gamma_1$ be a connected signed bipartite graph of order $n$ and $\Gamma_2$ be a connected signed graph of order $m$. By defining two kinds of signed product of $\Gamma_1$ and $\Gamma_2$, denoted by $\Gamma_1\widetilde{\Box}\Gamma_2$ and $\Gamma_1\widetilde{\bowtie} \Gamma_2$, we show that if $\Gamma_1$ and $\Gamma_2$ have exactly two distinct adjacency eigenvalues $\pm\theta_1$ and $\pm\theta_2$ respectively, then every $(\frac{1}{2}mn+1)$-vertex induced subgraph of $\Gamma_1\widetilde{\Box}\Gamma_2$ (resp. $\Gamma_1\widetilde{\bowtie} \Gamma_2$) has maximum degree at least $\sqrt{\theta_1^2+\theta_2^2}$ (resp. $\sqrt{(\theta_1^2+1)\theta_2^2}$). We consider the quantity P ( G ) associated with a graph G that is defined as the probability that a randomly chosen subtree of G is spanning. Motivated by conjectures due to Chin, Gordon, MacPhee and Vincent on the behaviour of this graph invariant depending on the edge density, we establish first that P ( G ) is bounded below by a positive constant provided that the minimum degree is bounded below by a linear function in the number of vertices. Thereafter, the focus is shifted to the classical Erdos-Renyi random graph model G ( n , p ). It is shown that P ( G ) converges in probability to e - 1 / ( e p infinity ) if p -> p infinity > 0 and to 0 if p -> 0. As side results, we find in the dense case that the total number of subtrees satisfies a log-normal limit law, and that the number of vertices missing in a random subtree asymptotically follows a Poisson distribution.

A linear forest is a forest in which every connected component is a path. The linear arboricity of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of linear forests of $G$ covering all edges. In 1980, Akiyama, Exoo and Harary proposed a conjecture, known as the Linear Arboricity Conjecture (LAC), stating that every $d$-regular graph $G$ has linear arboricity $\lceil \frac{d+1}{2} \rceil$. In 1988, Alon proved that the LAC holds asymptotically. In 1999, the list version of the LAC was raised by An and Wu, which is called the List Linear Arboricity Conjecture. Given a graph sequence $\{G_n\}_{n \geq 1}$ denote by $T_3(G_n)$ the number of monochromatic triangles in a uniformly random coloring of the vertices of $G_n$ with $c \geq 2$ colors. This arises as a generalization of the birthday paradox, where $G_n$ corresponds to a friendship network and $T_3(G_n)$ counts the number of triples of friends with matching birthdays. In this paper we prove a central limit theorem (CLT) for $T_3(G_n)$ with explicit error rates. The proof involves constructing a martingale difference sequence by carefully ordering the vertices of $G_n$, based on a certain combinatorial score function, and using a quantitive version of the martingale CLT. We then relate this error term to the well-known fourth moment phenomenon, which, interestingly, holds only when the number of colors $c \geq 5$. We also show that the convergence of the fourth moment is necessary to obtain a Gaussian limit for any $c \geq 2$, which, together with the above result, implies that the fourth-moment condition characterizes the limiting normal distribution of $T_3(G_n)$, whenever $c \geq 5$. Finally, to illustrate the promise of our approach, we include an alternative proof of the CLT for the number of monochromatic edges, which provides quantitative rates for the results obtained in Bhattacharya et al. In a paper from 2001 (Journal of the LMS), Diestel and Leader offered a proof that a connected graph has a normal spanning tree if and only if it does not contain a minor from two specific forbidden classes of graphs, all of cardinality $\aleph_1$. Unfortunately, their proof contains a gap, and their result is incorrect. In this paper, we construct a third type of obstruction: an $\aleph_1$-sized graph without a normal spanning tree that contains neither of the two types described by Diestel and Leader as a minor. A partial linear space is a pair $(\mathcal{P},\mathcal{L})$ where $\mathcal{P}$ is a non-empty set of points and $\mathcal{L}$ is a collection of subsets of $\mathcal{P}$ called lines such that any two distinct points are contained in at most one line, and every line contains at least two points. A partial linear space is proper when it is not a linear space or a graph. A group of automorphisms $G$ of a proper partial linear space acts transitively on ordered pairs of distinct collinear points and ordered pairs of distinct non-collinear points precisely when $G$ is transitive of rank 3 on points. In this paper, we classify the finite proper partial linear spaces that admit rank 3 affine primitive automorphism groups, except for certain families of small groups, including subgroups of $A\Gamma L_1(q)$. Up to these exceptions, this completes the classification of the finite proper partial linear spaces admitting rank 3 primitive automorphism groups. We study the back stable Schubert calculus of the infinite flag variety. We study the following question: for given $d\geq 2$, $n\geq d$ and $k \leq n$, what is the largest value $c(d,n,k)$ such that from any set of $n$ unit vectors in $\mathbb{R}^d$, we may select $k$ vectors with corresponding signs $\pm 1$ so that their signed sum has norm at least $c(d,n,k)$? The problem is dual to classical vector sum minimization and balancing questions, which have been studied for over a century. We give asymptotically sharp estimates for $c(d,n,k)$ in the general case. In several special cases, we provide stronger estimates: the quantity $c(d,n,n)$ corresponds to the $\ell_p$-polarization problem, while determining $c(d, n, 2)$ is equivalent to estimating the coherence of a vector system, which is a special case of $p$-frame energies. Two new proofs are presented for the classical Welch bound when $n = d+1$. For large values of $n$, volumetric estimates are applied for obtaining fine estimates on $c(d,n,2)$. Studying the planar case, sharp bounds on $c(2, n, k)$ are given. Finally, we determine the exact value of $c(d,d+1,d+1)$ under some extra assumptions., 15 pages. Let the bipartite Tur\'an number $ex(m,n,H)$ of a graph $H$ be the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free bipartite graph with two parts of sizes $m$ and $n$, respectively. In this paper, we prove that $ex(m,n,C_{2t})=(t-1)n+m-t+1$ for any positive integers $m,n,t$ with $n\geq m\geq t\geq \frac{m}{2}+1$. This confirms the rest of a conjecture of Gy\"{o}ri \cite{G97} (in a stronger form), and improves the upper bound of $ex(m,n,C_{2t})$ obtained by Jiang and Ma \cite{JM18} for this range. We also prove a tight edge condition for consecutive even cycles in bipartite graphs, which settles a conjecture in \cite{A09}. As a main tool, for a longest cycle $C$ in a bipartite graph, we obtain an estimate on the upper bound of the number of edges which are incident to at most one vertex in $C$. We consider the community detection problem in sparse random hypergraphs. Angelini et al. (2015) conjectured the existence of a sharp threshold on model parameters for community detection in sparse hypergraphs generated by a hypergraph stochastic block model. We solve the positive part of the conjecture for the case of two blocks: above the threshold, there is a spectral algorithm which asymptotically almost surely constructs a partition of the hypergraph correlated with the true partition. We present an integer programming model to compute the strong rainbow connection number, $src(G)$, of any simple graph $G$. We introduce several enhancements to the proposed model, including a fast heuristic, and a variable elimination scheme. Moreover, we present a novel lower bound for $src(G)$ which may be of independent research interest. We solve the integer program both directly and using an alternative method based on iterative lower bound improvement, the latter of which we show to be highly effective in practice. To our knowledge, these are the first computational methods for the strong rainbow connection problem. We demonstrate the efficacy of our methods by computing the strong rainbow connection numbers of graphs containing up to $379$ vertices., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures

In a celebrated paper, Borwein, Erd\'elyi, Ferguson and Lockhart constructed cosine polynomials of the form \[ f_A(x) = \sum_{a \in A} \cos(ax), \] with $A\subseteq \mathbb{N}$, $|A|= n$ and as few as $n^{5/6+o(1)}$ zeros in $[0,2\pi]$, thereby disproving an old conjecture of J.E. In this paper, we consider a randomized greedy algorithm for independent sets in $r$-uniform $d$-regular hypergraphs $G$ on $n$ vertices with girth $g$. By analyzing the expected size of the independent sets generated by this algorithm, we show that $\alpha(G)\geq (f(d,r)-\epsilon(g,d,r))n$, where $\epsilon(g,d,r)$ converges to $0$ as $g\rightarrow\infty$ for fixed $d$ and $r$, and $f(d,r)$ is determined by a differential equation. This extends earlier results of Gamarnik and Goldberg for graphs. We also prove that when applying this algorithm to uniform linear hypergraphs with bounded degree, the size of the independent sets generated by this algorithm concentrate around the mean asymptotically almost surely.

For every positive integer $n$, we construct a Hasse diagram with $n$ vertices and chromatic number $\Omega(n^{1/4})$, which significantly improves on the previously known best constructions of Hasse diagrams having chromatic number $\Theta(\log n)$. In addition, if we also require that our Hasse diagram has girth at least $k\geq 5$, we can achieve a chromatic number of at least $n^{\frac{1}{2k-3}+o(1)}$. These results have the following surprising geometric consequence. They imply the existence of a family $\mathcal{C}$ of $n$ curves in the plane such that the disjointness graph $G$ of $\mathcal{C}$ is triangle-free (or have high girth), but the chromatic number of $G$ is polynomial in $n$. In this paper, we compute the cohomology class of certain "special maximal-rank loci" originally defined by Aprodu and Farkas. By showing that such classes are nonzero, we are able to verify the non-emptiness portion of the Strong Maximal Rank Conjecture in a wide range of cases. As an application, we obtain new evidence for the existence portion of a well-known conjecture due to Bertram, Feinberg and independently Mukai in higher-rank Brill--Noether theory., 38 pages, significantly reorganized final version to appear in J. We prove that the chromatic number of a circle graph with clique number $\omega$ is at most $7\omega^2$., Comment: 7 pages

Erd\H{o}s and Lov\'asz noticed that an $r$-uniform intersecting hypergraph $H$ with maximal covering number, that is $\tau(H)=r$, must have at least $\frac{8}{3}r-3$ edges. There has been no improvement on this lower bound for 45 years. We try to understand the reason by studying some small cases to see whether the truth lies very close to this simple bound. Let $q(r)$ denote the minimum number of edges in an intersecting $r$-uniform hypergraph. It was known that $q(3)=6$ and $q(4)=9$. We obtain the following new results: The extremal example for uniformity 4 is unique. Somewhat surprisingly it is not symmetric by any means. For uniformity 5, $q(5)=13$, and we found 3 examples, none of them being some known graph. We use both theoretical arguments and computer searches. In the footsteps of Erd\H{o}s and Lov\'asz, we also consider the special case, when the hypergraph is part of a finite projective plane. We determine the exact answer for $r\in \{3,4,5,6\}$. For uniformity 6, there is a unique extremal example. In a related question, we try to find $2$-intersecting $r$-uniform hypergraphs with maximal covering number, that is $\tau(H)=r-1$. An infinite family of examples is to take all possible $r$-sets of a $(2r-2)$-vertex set. There is also a geometric candidate: biplanes. These are symmetric 2-designs with $\lambda=2$. We determined that only 3 biplanes of the 18 known examples are extremal.

Let PG$(\mathbb{F}_q^v)$ be the $(v-1)$-dimensional projective space over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and let $\Gamma$ be a simple graph of order ${q^k-1\over q-1}$ for some $k$. A 2$-(v,\Gamma,\lambda)$ design over $\mathbb{F}_q$ is a collection $\cal B$ of graphs (\textit{blocks}) isomorphic to $\Gamma$ with the following properties: the vertex set of every block is a subspace of PG$(\mathbb{F}_q^v)$; every two distinct points of PG$(\mathbb{F}_q^v)$ are adjacent in exactly $\lambda$ blocks. This new definition covers, in particular, the well known concept of a 2$-(v,k,\lambda)$ design over $\mathbb{F}_q$ corresponding to the case that $\Gamma$ is complete. In this work of a foundational nature we illustrate how difference methods allow us to get concrete non-trivial examples of $\Gamma$-decompositions over $\mathbb{F}_2$ or $\mathbb{F}_3$ for which $\Gamma$ is a cycle, a path, a prism, a generalized Petersen graph, or a Moebius ladder. In particular, we will discuss in detail the special and very hard case that $\Gamma$ is complete and $\lambda=1$, i.e., the Steiner 2-designs over a finite field. Also, we briefly touch the new topic of near resolvable 2-$(v,2,1)$ designs over $\mathbb{F}_q$. This study has led us to some (probably new) collateral problems concerning difference sets. Supported by multiple examples, we conjecture the existence of infinite families of $\Gamma$-decompositions over a finite field that can be obtained by suitably labeling the vertices of $\Gamma$ with the elements of a Singer difference set.

We apply the theory of unimodular random rooted graphs to study the metric geometry of large, finite, bounded degree graphs whose diameter is proportional to their volume. We prove that for a positive proportion of the vertices of such a graph, there exists a mesoscopic scale on which the graph looks like $\mathbb{R}$ in the sense that the rescaled ball is close to a line segment in the Gromov-Hausdorff metric., Comment: 12 pages. Consider the random process in which the edges of a graph $G$ are added one by one in a random order. A classical result states that if $G$ is the complete graph $K_{2n}$ or the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$, then typically a perfect matching appears at the moment at which the last isolated vertex disappears. We extend this result to arbitrary $k$-regular bipartite graphs $G$ on $2n$ vertices for all $k = \omega \left( \frac{n}{\log^{1/3} n} \right)$. Surprisingly, this is not the case for smaller values of $k$. The upper tail problem in a random graph asks to estimate the probability that the number of copies of some fixed subgraph in an Erd\H{o}s--R\'enyi random graph exceeds its expectation by some constant factor. There has been much exciting recent progress on this problem. We study the corresponding problem for hypergraphs, for which less is known about the large deviation rate. We present new phenomena in upper tail large deviations for sparse random hypergraphs that are not seen in random graphs. We conjecture a formula for the large deviation rate, i.e., the first order asymptotics of the log-probability that the number of copies of fixed subgraph $H$ in a sparse Erd\H{o}s--R\'enyi random $k$-uniform hypergraph exceeds its expectation by a constant factor. This conjecture turns out to be significantly more intricate compared to the case for graphs. We verify our conjecture when the fixed subgraph $H$ being counted is a clique, as well as when $H$ is the 3-uniform 6-vertex 4-edge hypergraph consisting of alternating faces of an octahedron, where new techniques are required., Comment: 36 pages, v2, to appear in Random Structures & Algorithms

The canonical double cover $\D(\Gamma)$ of a graph $\Gamma$ is the direct product of $\Gamma$ and $K_2$. If $\Aut(\D(\Gamma))\cong\Aut(\Gamma)\times\ZZ_2$ then $\Gamma$ is called stable; otherwise $\Gamma$ is called unstable. An unstable graph is said to be nontrivially unstable if it is connected, non-bipartite and no two vertices have the same neighborhood. In 2008 Wilson conjectured that, if the generalized Petersen graph $\GP(n,k)$ is nontrivially unstable, then both $n$ and $k$ are even, and either $n/2$ is odd and $k^2\equiv\pm 1 \pmod{n/2}$, or $n=4k$. In this note we prove that this conjecture is true. At the same time we determine all possible isomorphisms among the generalized Petersen graphs, the canonical double covers of the generalized Petersen graphs, and the double generalized Petersen graphs. Based on these we completely determine the full automorphism group of the canonical double cover of $\GP(n,k)$ for any pair of integers $n, k$ with $1 \leqslant k < n/2$., Comment: This is the final version that will appear in Journal of Graph Theory

The (tree) amplituhedron $\mathcal A_{n,k,m}(Z)$ is a certain subset of the Grassmannian introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka in 2013 in order to study scattering amplitudes in $N=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Confirming a conjecture of the first author, we show that when $m$ is even, a collection of affine permutations yields a triangulation of $\mathcal A_{n,k,m}(Z)$ for any $Z\in \operatorname{Gr}_{>0}(k+m,n)$ if and only if the collection of their inverses yields a triangulation of $\mathcal A_{n,n-m-k,m}(Z)$ for any $Z\in\operatorname{Gr}_{>0}(n-k,n)$. We prove this duality using the twist map of Marsh and Scott. We also show that this map preserves the canonical differential forms associated with the corresponding positroid cells, and hence obtain a parity duality for amplituhedron differential forms., 52 pages, 3 figures

For a bipartite graph G, let h(G) be the largest t such that either G or the bipartite complement of G contain K$_{t,t}$. For a class F of graphs, let h(F)= min {h(G): G\in F}. We say that a bipartite graph H is strongly acyclic if neither H nor its bipartite complement contain a cycle. By Forb(n, H) we denote a set of bipartite graphs with parts of sizes n each, that do not contain H as an induced bipartite subgraph respecting the sides. One can easily show that h(Forb(n,H))= O(n$^{1-s}$) for a positive s if H is not strongly acyclic. Here, we prove that h(Forb(n, H)) is linear in n for all strongly acyclic graphs except for four graphs.

The well-known 5-flow Conjecture of Tutte, stated originally for integer flows, claims that every bridgeless graph has circular flow number at most 5. It is a classical result that the study of the 5-flow Conjecture can be reduced to cubic graphs, in particular to snarks. However, very few procedures to construct snarks with circular flow number 5 are known. In the first part of this paper, we summarise some of these methods and we propose new ones based on variations of the known constructions. Afterwards, we prove that all such methods are nothing but particular instances of a more general construction that we introduce into detail. In the second part, we consider many instances of this general method and we determine when our method permits to obtain a snark with circular flow number 5. Finally, by a computer search, we determine all snarks having circular flow number 5 up to 36 vertices. It turns out that all such snarks of order at most 34 can be obtained by using our method, and that the same holds for 96 of the 98 snarks of order 36 with circular flow number 5., 27 pages; submitted for publication

Given graphs $F,H$ and $G$, we say that $G$ is $(F,H)_v$-Ramsey if every red/blue vertex colouring of $G$ contains a red copy of $F$ or a blue copy of $H$. Results of {\L}uczak, Ruci\'nski and Voigt and, subsequently, Kreuter determine the threshold for the property that the random graph $G(n,p)$ is $(F,H)_v$-Ramsey. In this paper we consider the sister problem in the setting of randomly perturbed graphs. In particular, we determine how many random edges one needs to add to a dense graph to ensure that with high probability the resulting graph is $(F,H)_v$-Ramsey for all pairs $(F,H)$ that involve at least one clique., Comment: 21 pages

Consider a complete graph $K_n$ with edge weights drawn independently from a uniform distribution $U(0,1)$. The weight of the shortest (minimum-weight) path $P_1$ between two given vertices is known to be $\ln n / n$, asymptotically. Define a second-shortest path $P_2$ to be the shortest path edge-disjoint from $P_1$, and consider more generally the shortest path $P_k$ edge-disjoint from all earlier paths. We show that the cost $X_k$ of $P_k$ converges in probability to $2k/n+\ln n/n$ uniformly for all $k \leq n-1$. We show analogous results when the edge weights are drawn from an exponential distribution. The same results characterise the collectively cheapest $k$ edge-disjoint paths, i.e., a minimum-cost $k$-flow. We also obtain the expectation of $X_k$ conditioned on the existence of $P_k$.

Let $p\ge 5$ be a prime and let $n$ be a natural number. In this article we describe the irreducible constituents of the induced characters $\phi\big\uparrow^{\mathfrak{S}_n}$ for arbitrary linear characters $\phi$ of a Sylow $p$-subgroup of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$, generalising earlier results of the authors. We study three preferential attachment models where the parameters are such that the asymptotic degree distribution has infinite variance. Every edge is equipped with a non-negative i.i.d. weight. We study the weighted distance between two vertices chosen uniformly at random, the typical weighted distance, and the number of edges on this path, the typical hopcount. We prove that there are precisely two universality classes of weight distributions, called the explosive and conservative class. In the explosive class, we show that the typical weighted distance converges in distribution to the sum of two i.i.d. finite random variables. In the conservative class, we prove that the typical weighted distance tends to infinity, and we give an explicit expression for the main growth term, as well as for the hopcount. We introduce motivic zeta functions for matroids. These zeta functions are defined as sums over the lattice points of Bergman fans, and in the realizable case, they coincide with the motivic Igusa zeta functions of hyperplane arrangements. We show that these motivic zeta functions satisfy a functional equation arising from matroid Poincar\'{e} duality in the sense of Adiprasito-Huh-Katz. In the process, we obtain a formula for the Hilbert series of the cohomology ring of a matroid, in the sense of Feichtner-Yuzvinsky. We then show that our motivic zeta functions specialize to the topological zeta functions for matroids introduced by van der Veer, and we compute the first two coefficients in the Taylor expansion of these topological zeta functions, providing affirmative answers to two questions posed by van der Veer., Comment: 28 pages, 2 figures

For a graph $G$, the mean subtree order of $G$ is the average order of a subtree of $G$. In this note, we provide counterexamples to a recent conjecture of Chin, Gordon, MacPhee, and Vincent, that for every connected graph $G$ and every pair of distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$, the addition of the edge between $u$ and $v$ increases the mean subtree order. In fact, we show that the addition of a single edge between a pair of nonadjacent vertices in a graph of order $n$ can decrease the mean subtree order by as much as $n/3$ asymptotically. We propose the weaker conjecture that for every connected graph $G$ which is not complete, there exists a pair of nonadjacent vertices $u$ and $v$, such that the addition of the edge between $u$ and $v$ increases the mean subtree order.
