Abstract

The article presents the author's reflections on the grouping of musical phrases in a melodic line and the expressive gesture in Richard Wagner's music performance. He focuses on "Du bist der Lenz" which was sung by Sieglinde after Siegmund's spring song in Act I of Scene 3. He says that the orchestral accompaniment contains a melodic element of greater importance than the vocal melody making it possible for him to concentrate on the vocal part without feeling it is incomplete.
