Objectives: To examine the predictors of parent-child bonding and parenting satisfaction using structural equation models at three time points across the perinatal period: (1) during pregnancy at >24 gestational weeks, (2) one month postpartum, and (3) three months postpartum., Methods: This longitudinal exploratory quantitative study recruited a convenient sample of 118 heterosexual couples (236 participants; 118 mothers and 118 fathers) from maternity clinics of a public tertiary hospital in Singapore. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the parents' characteristics and study variables. Structural equation modeling was used to test the appropriateness of the hypothesized model on the study variables. Multigroup analyses according to gender were conducted to understand the relationships among parental outcome variables for mothers and fathers separately. Goodness-of-fit statistics were used to determine the adequateness of the hypothesized models., Results: An adequate fit between the hypothesized model and the study's data was reported for all analyses. Among couples, no variable was identified as a significant predictor for parent-child bonding, while parenting self-efficacy, parent-child bonding, and social support were identified as significant predictors of parenting satisfaction. Fathers with more social support had stronger father-infant bonds. Mothers with poorer psychological well-being had more maternal-child bonding and maternal satisfaction. Background: Hospitalization often induces anxiety and fear in children, which may lead to maladaptive behaviours. Prior research has found that storytelling can help improve children's communication and reduce their stress. Not only does it enhance children's ability to express their emotions more effectively and comfortably, it also assists them in releasing negative emotions like anxiousness and fear., Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of storytelling in reducing children's anxiety and/or fear during hospitalization., Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. The search spanned across eight online databases from their inception dates to January 2024. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool was utilized to perform quality appraisals. Effects model was utilized to conduct the meta-analysis. Subgroup analyses were conducted for age of participants, geographical location and measurement used., Findings: A total of eight studies were included in this review. Compared to standard care, storytelling was found to be effective in reducing anxiety and/or fear in children during hospitalization. Anxiety scores were not affected by the participants' age, but the geographical location and type of measurement scales used showed significant subgroup differences., Conclusion: Storytelling interventions help to reduce anxiety and fear levels in hospitalized children. It was suggested that hospitals could provide the necessary training to healthcare workers to perform storytelling more effectively. Additionally, involvement of parents in storytelling could be encouraged, ensuring continuity even after discharge. Objectives: To develop and validate a psychometrically sound self-reported Paternal involvement in Early InfAnCy ScalE (PEACE) for Asian fathers with infants aged 0-12 months old., Methods: This study comprised of three phases: (1) Pilot test among 100 fathers, (2) Exploring and confirming the PEACE's multidimensional structure using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) (n = 200 fathers) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) (n = 200 fathers), and (3) Assessing one-month test-retest reliability of PEACE among 30 fathers. Data was collected from August 2022 to August 2023. The EFA was conducted using principal axis factoring and varimax rotation. The CFA confirmed the factor structure via goodness-of-fit statistics. To assess the PEACE's concurrent validity, paternal involvement was measured using a previously validated paternal involvement scale. Convergent validity was established by examining correlations between PEACE and theoretically related measures of parenting self-efficacy, parent-child bonding, parenting satisfaction, and depression. Test-retest reliability was examined using the intra-class correlation coefficient., Results: The EFA and CFA results supported the five-factor 25-item PEACE. The five subscales were: i) Providing Tangible Support, ii) Meeting Basic Needs, iii) Bonding with Baby, iv) Decision-Making for Baby, and v) Sense of Responsibility and Accomplishment. All subscales reported good internal consistency and weak to moderate one-month test-retest reliability. Problem: The terminal phase of childhood cancer poses profound physical and mental challenges for children, simultaneously influencing parents and rendering them particularly susceptible to psychosocial issues., Eligibility Criteria: This review included studies exploring the experiences of either: (1) paediatric terminal oncology patients aged under 18 years, (2) parents with a child facing terminal cancer undergoing palliative care, or (3) parents with a child who had undergone palliative care and died. English language, qualitative journal studies or grey literature of any care settings, geographical locations and publication years were included. Studies exploring the experiences of (1) paediatric terminal oncology not receiving palliative care from qualified healthcare professionals, and (3) non-biological parents or non-parental family members, were excluded., Sample: A total of 22 studies were included, published between January 2000 and December 2023. Seventy-two children (aged between 5 and 18 years old) and 236 parents (aged between 24 and 57 years old) participated across all studies. Palliative care settings mostly comprised oncology centres, hospitals and homes., Results: Two themes were identified from the 22 included studies: (1) Navigating rough waters and enduring hardships, and (2) Preparing for end-of-life amidst the looming threat of death., Conclusions: This review underscored the importance of integrating palliative childhood cancer care in a holistic, age-specific, family-centred, person-centred and timely manner., Implications: Paediatric oncology nurses should attend to physical and psychosocial needs of children and parents, fostering familial and social ties while recognising cultural and spiritual needs. Problem: Adolescents face unique challenges in accessing sexual healthcare, particularly regarding induced abortion experiences. Prior research, often quantitative or biased towards young adults, overlooks this. This review aims to address adolescents' specific post-abortion experiences to inform comprehensive reproductive healthcare needs., Eligibility Criteria: Qualitative and mixed-methods studies exploring the experiences of adolescents following induced abortion were included. Studies reporting these experiences from third-person perspectives were excluded., Sample: Five electronic databases (CINAHL, PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Embase) were searched from the databases' inception through March 2024. Of the 2834 articles retrieved, 45 studies were included in this review., Results: Using a meta-synthesis approach combining Sandelowski & Barroso's qualitative metasummary with Braun & Clarke's thematic analysis, three main themes emerged: Post-abortion experiences and emotions, Social dynamics and support, and Life post-abortion and future perspectives., Conclusions: Adolescents who underwent abortion faced physical and emotional challenges, adopted various coping strategies, and had mixed experiences with social support and healthcare providers. To address these challenges, the provision of comprehensive reproductive health information, access to safe and legal abortion options, and support for their physical, social, and emotional well-being is necessary. Healthcare providers must ensure that adolescents are equipped with necessary skills to navigate their reproductive health journeys with informed choices and confidence., Implications: Future research exploring adolescents' experiences, considering cultural beliefs, involving multiple stakeholders, and conducting longitudinal studies, is warranted. Background: Parents of preterm infants are often thrown unexpectedly into the care of their vulnerable infant, causing them to be stressed and overwhelmed. Social support has been previously highlighted as a crucial factor in helping parents cope with stress. Several psychosocial interventions have thus been developed to support parents of preterm babies, which warrant further investigations., Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions in reducing stress (primary outcome), anxiety, depression, pediatric medical traumatic stress (PMTS) and increasing social support among parents with preterm infants., Methods: A systematic-review and meta-analysis were conducted. Eight electronic databases were searched for relevant studies from their respective inception dates till September 2023. Meta-analysis was performed with RevMan, using the random-effects model. Heterogeneity was investigated using Cochran Q and I2 tests, and publication bias was assessed using funnel plots. Subgroup analyses were conducted for follow-up measurement, gender of parent, type of intervention provider, and setting., Findings: Eighteen studies were included in this review, and all studies were meta-analysed. Participants who received psychosocial interventions reported significantly lower stress and depression in comparison to control group participants. Psychosocial interventions delivered by psychologists and trained researchers were more effective compared to the nurses. The GRADE assessment indicated that the certainty of evidence for all outcomes were very low., Conclusion: Psychosocial interventions effectively reduce stress and depression levels in parents with preterm infants. Our findings encourage the implementation of psychosocial interventions to improve parental psychological wellbeing. Problem: Peer support is a form of social support that can address the complexities of support needs and challenges of parenting children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs). However, there is paucity of research on the roles and influences of peer support experienced amongst parents of neurodivergent children. This qualitative systematic review therefore aimed to consolidate and synthesize the experiences of peer support amongst parents caring for neurodivergent children., Eligibility Criteria: Articles were selected if they reported primary qualitative findings on the experiences of peer-support amongst parents of children diagnosed with at least one NDD as classified by DSM-5., Sample: Eleven articles were finalised and included in the review., Results: Four themes emerged: (1) reasons for seeking peer support, (2) different roles of peer support, (3) contributing elements of successful peer support, and (4) barriers against facilitating peer support. The findings of this review revealed that peer support was a valuable social support resource that met the complex support needs of parents. Problem: The lives of family members for children with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) after often shaped around the diagnosis as long-term/life-long care is needed. The combination of illness symptoms, treatment cost, and caregiving demands for T1DM negatively affects family functioning. While the experiences and needs of both parents and children suffering from T1DM are well documented, literature on healthy siblings of children with T1DM remains scarce., Purpose: This systematic review aims to consolidate and examine the experiences and needs of siblings of children with T1DM., Eligibility Criteria: Qualitative and quantitative studies exploring the experiences and needs of children under 18 years old whose siblings are diagnosed with T1DM., Sample: Six electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, EMBASE, Scopus and ProQuest) were searched from inception till July 2021. Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria and were subjected to narrative synthesis., Results: Four themes were generated from the synthesis: (1) emotional responses to sibling's condition, (2) stepping out of comfort zone, (3) changes in family dynamics, and (4) takeaways and a way forward., Conclusions: The impact of T1DM diagnosis on siblings of children with T1DM suggest a need for healthcare providers to provide them better emotional and informational support, and allow them more involvement in the care for their sibling with T1DM., Implications: Findings from this review will be able to inform policymakers on the development of future support programmes for children with T1DM and their families and encourage clinicians to revise T1DM care plans to be more family-centered. Background: There is increasing evidence that being resilient negates the deleterious impacts of stress and promote academic success. To develop an insight into how important resilience is, it is vital to explore how higher education students perceive and develop resilience., Objectives: The purpose of this review was to gather students' experiences of their resilience journey in an educational setting., Design: Systematic review and meta-ethnography of qualitative evidence REVIEW METHODS: This review was reported in accordance with the eMERGe guidelines. The data were analysed with reference to the seven steps of meta-ethnography. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation's Confidence in Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative research (GRADE-CERQual) was used to appraise the quality of the evidence., Results: Three themes emerged: (1) resilience associates with internal resources, (2) resilience develops through meaningful relationships and (3) resilience can be instilled by educational institutions. An individual's trait, outlook and engagement within their social network can influence resilience. Problem: Parents of children with chronic kidney disease face tremendous burdens of care, having to adopt dual roles as parents and informal healthcare providers, delivering home-based clinical care, despite lacking proper qualification and training., Eligibility Criteria: A systematic review of qualitative studies was conducted to identify sources of distress among parents caring for children with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis, excluding children who have had renal transplants. Guided by PRISMA guidelines, six electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus, Cochrane, Google Scholar) were searched for relevant articles published in English. A three-step inductive thematic synthesis method outlined by Thomas and Harden (2018) was used to form descriptive themes and the Critical Appraisal Skill Program (CASP) qualitative checklist was utilised to appraise the quality of included articles., Sample: A total of 23,129 title and abstracts were reviewed; 161 full texts were reviewed. Thirteen papers, with the experiences of 183 parents, met the inclusion criteria. Problem: A pathogenic medical orientation focusing on disease management relies heavily on the skills of healthcare professionals. In contrast, a salutogenic approach focuses on health promotion by encouraging resource strengthening among patients to maintain and support recovery, which could help alleviate healthcare burden and enhance healthcare quality. Considering the increased life expectancies of chronically ill children, this review aimed to consolidate evidence on the use of salutogenesis among children and adolescents with chronic illnesses., Eligibility Criteria: A scoping review guided by Arksey and O'Malley's five-stage framework was conducted. Studies with samples of children or adolescents aged 19 years and below with chronic disease were included in the review., Sample: A library search was performed across six electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo, and Web of Science) from each database's inception to March 2020. Twelve studies were included., Results: Current evidence only highlighted the trend and advantages of high sense of coherence and identify factors that enhance sense of coherence. Boys, younger age, higher cognitive functioning, non-migrants, non-smokers, and available peer and family support contribute to higher levels of sense of coherence, which lead to better perceived health, quality of life, and more positive coping strategies., Conclusions: Healthcare professionals should adopt a salutogenic approach to encourage patient involvement, independence, and responsibility in maintaining their own health., Implications: Further research is needed to provide a holistic view of the sense of coherence and application of salutogenesis (especially other salutogenic concepts) among this sample group, which can also inform future salutogenic intervention studies., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Problem: Children and adolescents with non-communicable disease face more difficulties in achieving developmental milestones than their healthy peers, which affect their life and overall wellbeing. A non-disease-specific approach is important in identifying common challenges faced by children and adolescents across multiple non-communicable diseases., Eligibility Criteria: Qualitative studies reporting first-hand accounts of children and adolescents aged 4 to19 years with non-communicable disease., Sample: A library search was conducted in five electronic databases (CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses) for original qualitative English language papers. Fifty-five articles met the inclusion criteria and were subjected to a two-step meta-synthesis., Results: Initial reports of negative emotional experiences and disease perceptions were mixed with gradual acceptances of their diseases and positive coping strategies. Children and adolescents with non-communicable disease all desired a normal life, but physical limitations often led to social exclusions and self-imposed restrictions. Although most were highly appreciative of the support received from family, friends, and healthcare providers, they still struggled with disease management, the need for autonomy, and the fear of illness disclosure., Conclusions: The impacts of non-communicable disease on children and adolescent's lives suggest a need for joint efforts between parents, clinicians, and educators to ensure children and adolescents' positive development of the self, acceptance and positive coping., Implications: This review is able to inform the development of future educational and psychosocial intervention programs in the school and healthcare setting, and also encourages a revision of education policies to be more flexible and accommodating., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest None., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Preceptorship is a commonly used clinical teaching method for new nurses, and perceptions regarding it are varied and come from many sources. The aim of this integrative review is to explore the perceptions of preceptorship from preceptors and newly graduated nurses. Three electronic databases were searched for relevant articles and the Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal tools were used to assess for suitability before inclusion in the review. Twenty articles were included eventually. A total of six focus areas were identified: (a) role of the preceptor, (b) preceptor preparation and support, (c) challenges of being a preceptor, (d) preceptorship significance for newly graduated nurses, (e) needs of newly graduated nurses, and (f) factors affecting the preceptor-preceptee relationship. The impact of preceptorship is significant and especially so on newly graduated nurses who are going through a transition as they enter the workforce. The preceptor functions to teach and additionally provide psychosocial support to the preceptee. Preceptors need to receive preceptor education to effectively carry out their role. Awareness of the preceptor's role by nursing managers can aid in optimizing preceptorship outcomes. Preceptorship helps to ease the stressful transition that new graduates experience. Preceptorship has a potential in nursing retention when utilized in nursing with newly graduated nurses. Hence, perceptions of preceptorship from preceptor-preceptee pairs of varying ethnic backgrounds, nationalities, educational qualifications, and generations can be further explored., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc.
