This paper describes a surgically treated case of gelatinous cyst of extremely rare location within the tibial nerve at the level of the popliteal fossa. The initial diagnosis was based on imaging exams (MRI, ultrasonography) and surgical exploration of the tumour. The intraneural ganglion was completely removed. Neurological motor and sensory deficits were observed neither in the preoperative nor in the postoperative period. The ultimate diagnosis was established based on the histopathological examination.

Rationale: Tissue eosinophilia is an important pathophysiological issue in bronchial asthma and nasal polyps. Its magnitude is regulated by several mechanisms, including selective migration of eosinophils to peripheral tissues and prolongation of survival. A key role in this processes is assigned to Th2 originating cytokines: IL-3, IL-5, GM-CSF. It has been previously demonstrated that IL-12 diminishes tissue eosinophilia in an animal model, and Hofstra showed that IL-12 together with IL-18 prevents allergen-induced increase bronchial hyperresponsiveness, BAL eosinophilia and the development of allergen-specific Th2 cells., Methods: Nasal polyps were obtained during routine surgery and were cultured in fragments of approximately 30 mg for 2, 6, and 15 days in RPMI 1640 in the absence or presence of IL-12. Afterwards a dose-dependency was tested at day 2 of culture. Polyp tissue from cultures was than processed to slides, stained with Giemsa and cells were counted in light microscopy (400x)., Results: Eosinophils represented 62.8+/-21.3% of residing cells in nasal polyps at the day 0. IL-12 (1 microg/ml) caused a significant time-dependent decrease in the percentage of Eos after 2 and 6 days. The effect of IL-12 at day 2 was concentration-dependent: control, 28.2+/-2.9; at 10 ng/ml, 13.9+/-6.4 (n=4, p<0.05); at 100 ng/ml, 11.6+/-2.1 (p<0.01); at 1 microg/ml, 7.5+/-1.5 (p<0.005)., Conclusion: IL-12 acts as potent topical antieosinophilic agent. Its action can be seen in a cultured polyp environment. It is visible already after two days and is concentration-dependent. Further study is needed to elucidate tissue mechanisms of this action.

Primary Fallopian tube carcinoma (PFTC) is one of the rarest malignant tumours of the female genital tract. Staging of the disease according to FIGO scale is the most common prognostic indicator. Others, such as histological type, grading according to Hu classification, depth of tubal wall invasion, the presence of neoplastic cells in peritoneal leakage, invasion of the lymphatic and blood vessels, mitotic activity, DNA ploidy, Ki-67 expression, AgNOR level and p53 and c-erbB-2 immunoreactivity, are not widely accepted. 70 cases of primary Fallopian tube carcinomas were analysed with regard to clinicopathological data, survival and the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and laminin. Histological classification of PTFC revealed 26 cases of the endometriod type, 16 undifferentiated, 15 serous, 8 urothelial, 3 clearcell and 3 of other types. A total of 70 cases revealed positive nuclear staining for PCNA. The index of PCNA (labelling index, LI, proportion of PCNA-positive cells relative to all neoplastic cells) was evaluated. Neuroepithelial dysembryoplastic tumour was first described by Daumas-Duport in 1988 and in WHO classification was included into the group of neuronal and mixed neuroglial tumours. This is a benign and very rare tumor with a good prognosis occurring in children and young adults. The tumour caused characteristic clinical symptoms: epileptic fits, supratentorial, intracortical localisation, most often in temporal lobe and specific nodular architecture with heterogenic cell composition. Oligodendrocyte-like cells, glial and neuronal elements are usually found. The authors present a case of a 24-years old female with partial epileptic sensorial symptomatology. CT examination revealed a tumour in the left parietal lobe. Histological findings showed a typical texture of DNT. The tumour has no tendency for recurrence even in case of incomplete removal and does not require chemotherapy nor radiotherapy which is significantly important for accurate diagnosis, in order to avoid an aggressive therapy in young patients.

Unlabelled: The aim of our study was to evaluate the influence of heparin on inflammed bronchial mucosa in rats. Sixty five animals were used in the study; 5 of them constituted the control group, whereas 60 were submitted to long term SO2 irritation in specially constructed chamber, what resulted in chronic bronchitis. Low molecular weight heparin preparation--Frexiparine has been administered in inhalation or parenterally to 40 rats, simultaneously or immediately after SO2 exposition. In all animals exposed to SO2 the BALF evaluation revealed predomination of inflammatory cells. The results obtained in healthy rats were different and BALF cellular sediment contained 92% of epithelial cells. However in animals submitted to SO2 irritation and simultaneous heparin treatment we observed significant increase of the number of inflammatory cells in BALF in comparison to healthy rats but it was not as high when compared to animals irritated only with SO2. In all animals exposed only to SO2 we were able to find disseminate inflammatory changes and/or planoepithelial metaplasia in bronchial specimens. However we did not observe any sings of inflammation in specimens obtained from 50% of heparin treated rats, whereas in the other 50% they were described as mild or moderate., Conclusions: 1. Low molecular weight heparin decreased signs of experimentally provoked bronchial inflammation in rats. 2. Simultaneous heparin and SO2 administration was extremely efficient. This finding suggests prophylactic properties of heparin. 3. The heparin activity does not depend on inhalatory or parenteral way of administration.

In 20 rats bronchitis was evoked by permanent 12-week long inhalation of SO2. For this purpose a special chamber with gas supply was prepared. In all rats exposed to SO2 changes in cellularity of BALF were found (a statistically significant increase of the percent of macrophages and neutrophils). Histologic examination revealed bronchial changes especially in epithelium. The method applied, based on an original technology is cheap and effective and can be recommended in developing experimental bronchitis.
