Katarzyna Sienienska Debno coat of arms was a representative of well-known senatorial family. On the basis of the researched sources, it was possible to try to outline her biography. The author presented her fate from her early youth until her death. In the biography of Katarzyna Sienienska, it seems important that she got married three times. She was the wife of the pantler (dapifer) of Przemyśl Jan Biejkowski, the sub-judge (subiudex) of Przemyśl Mikolaj Ostrowski, and the cupbearer (pocillator) of Lublin, Stanislaw Myszkowski. Thanks to these marriages, she accumulated a considerable fortune. She had a daughter Zuzanna with her second husband, and a son Maurycy and a daughter Anna with the third. The history of life of Katarzyna Myszkowska nee Sienienska was presented against a broad historical background. The author developed the genealogy of Lublin line of Sienienski family, unknown to the authors of armorials, from which the heroine of this study came. He also cited many facts from the lives of the families of Katarzyna’s subsequent husbands. He devoted a lot of space to the property matters of the Sienienski, Biejkowski, Ostrowski and Myszkowski families as well. He also presented the history of the fierce struggle for Katarzyna’s inheritance between her children and her stepson, Jan Myszkowski. An interesting source report is attached to the text of the article, which presents the course of the violent dispute over the lodgings, in which Katarzyna and her husband Stanislaw Myszkowski played the main role.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie postrzegania menstruacji w starożytności w świecie grecko-rzymskim, żydowskim oraz chrześcijańskim, gdzie punktem wyjścia jest ewangeliczna perykopa o kobiecie cierpiącej na upływ krwi. Najpierw pojawiają się przykłady wypowiedzi i poglądów na temat przeżywających krwawienie miesięczne kobiet autorów rzymskich i greckich. Następnie zaprezentowane zostają źródła dotyczące sytuacji kobiet przeżywających menstruację oraz cierpiących z powodu chorobliwego upływu krwi wśród żydów, w tym wspomniana scena z Ewangelii. Trzecia część artykułu dotyczy opinii pisarzy chrześcijańskich na temat tego, czy kobiety mające menstruację powinny być wykluczone z życia religijnego.

The article describes the activities of public organizations in overcoming child homelessness and neglect of the USSR in the 1920s, showing their mechanism of functioning. It has been proven that public organizations were actively involved in the protection of children and the fight against homelessness, neglect and juvenile delinquency. They provided individual assistance to orphans and half-orphans and were engaged in the prevention of homelessness. These organizations also organized patronage, assisted in the maintenance of childcare establishments, participated actively in the creation of institutions for children of the unemployed, and provided protection of minors’ labor rights.

Protokoły legalizacji powstałe w Sądzie Pokoju Okręgu Radomszczańskiego w latach 1845–1874 pozwoliły na przeprowadzenie analiz dotyczących osób decydujących się na ten akt prawny. Na podstawie 43 dokumentów ustalono 49 osób legalizujących swoje dzieci. Stanowiło je 41 matek i ośmiu ojców. W sześciu przypadkach legalizowały pary, w dwóch tylko ojcowie, w 35 matki. Matki znajdowały się w różnym stanie cywilnym. Wśród nich 11 było pannami, 16 mężatkami, a 14 wdowami. Najczęściej były to zatem matki niebędące w związku małżeńskim. Ustalono jeden przypadek legalizacji dziecka poczętego z niemężem w czasie trwania związku małżeńskiego. Ustalono wiek 40 rodziców uznających dzieci. Legalizujący mieli od 20 do 61 lat. Spośród 41 matek wiek znany jest dla 37 z nich. Są to kobiety w wieku od 25 do 61 lat (przeciętnie liczyły 48,7 lat). Dominują matki w średnim wieku, liczące 37–59 lat, których było 33 (89,2%). Wynikało to z faktu, że decydowały się na legalizację dziecka dopiero, gdy osiągnęło ono dojrzałość. Na ogółem 49 legalizujących większość (47), tj. 95,9%, stanowią katolicy, ponadto wystąpiła jedna Żydówka i jedna ewangeliczka. Spośród legalizujących stan społeczny ustalono dla 25 matek i czterech ojców. W większości (20), tj. 80%, były to kobiety wywodzące się z niższych warstw społeczeństwa bądź je stanowiące. Kobiety pochodzenia chłopskiego (sześć) były określane jako pracowita, włościanka, córka rataja, rolnika, gospodarza. Wystąpiły ponadto kobiety pracujące jako wyrobnice (11) oraz służące (trzy). Legalizującymi byli w większości mieszkańcy wsi (47), tj. 95,9%, tylko dwie legalizujące pochodziły z miasta. Większość legalizujących dzieci stanowiły przede wszystkim matki w średnim wieku, pochodzące z niższych warstw społecznych mieszkających na wsi.

The article analyses the struggle of Anglo-American relations connected to slaves and maritime rights on the sea from 1831 to 1842. The study is based on monographs, reports, treaties and correspondences between the two countries from the explosion of the Comet case in 1831 to the signing of the Webster–Ashburton treaty in 1842. This study focuses on three fundamental issues: the appearance of Comet, Encomium, Enterprise, Hermosa and Creole as international incidents with regards to British-American relations; the view of both countries on the abolition of slavery, maritime rights as well as the dispute over issues to resolve arising from these incidents; the results of British-American diplomacy to release slaves and maritime rights after the signing of the Webster–Ashburton treaty. The study found that the American slave ships were special cases in comparison with the previous controversies in bilateral relations. The American slave vessels sailed to the British colonies due to bad weather conditions and a slave rebellion on board. In fact, Great Britain and the United States had never dealt with a similar case, so both sides failed to find a unified view regarding the differences in the laws and policies of the two countries on slavery. The history of British-American relations demonstrated that under the pressures of the border dispute in Maine and New Brunswick, the affairs were not resolved. In addition, it could have had more of an impact on the relationship between the two countries, eventually p the two countries into a war. In that situation, the diplomatic and economic solutions given to the abolition of slavery and maritime rights were only temporary. However, the international affairs related to the American slave vessels paved the way for the settlement of maritime rights for British-American relations in the second half of 19th century. W artykule zostały przeanalizowane nabrzmiałe konflikty w anglo-amerykańskich relacjach dotyczących kwestii niewolnictwa i praw morskich w okresie od 1831 do 1842 r. Są one oparte na analizie monografii, raportów, postanowień traktatowych oraz korespondencji amerykańskich i brytyjskich dyplomatów od momentu tzw. incydentu Kormeta (Cormet) w 1831 r. do podpisania traktatu Webstera–Ashburtona w 1842 r. W artykule zostały poruszone trzy najważniejsze sprawy, mianowicie kwestie statków: Kormeta, Encomium, Enterprise, Hermosa i Kreola jako międzynarodowych problemów w relacjach brytyjsko-amerykańskich, poglądy obu państw na kwestię zniesienia niewolnictwa, prawa morskie, jak również dyskusja na temat tego, jak rozwiązać powstałe konflikty morskie, które związane były bezpośrednio z kwestią przewożenia niewolników. W artykule ukazano, że przewóz niewolników na amerykańskich statkach stał się powodem do podjęcia nadzwyczajnych przedsięwzięć, które nie miały miejsca w dotychczasowych bilateralnych stosunkach. Gdy po raz pierwszy amerykańskie statki z niewolnikami dopłynęły do brytyjskich kolonii z uwagi na złe warunki pogodowe i bunt niewolników na pokładzie, to z uwagi na to, że do tej pory ani USA, ani Wielka Brytania nie miały do czynienia z podobnymi przypadkami, w efekcie żadnej ze stron nie udało się znaleźć jednolitego poglądu. Dopiero pod presją sporu granicznego dotyczącego Maine i Nowego Brunszwiku podjęto rozwiązania, które uchroniły oba kraje przed rozpoczęciem konfliktu zbrojnego. Podjęto tymczasowe rozwiązania dotyczące niewolników i praw morskich, ale sprawy międzynarodowe związane z amerykańskimi statkami przewożącymi niewolników przyczyniły się do otworzenia drogi regulującej prawa morskie w stosunkach brytyjsko-amerykańskich. Była to nagląca potrzeba.

The Rani, a west Slavic tribe based on the island of Rugen, built an empire existing until 12th century. In 1168 Rani were defeated by Danish king Valdemar I, resulting in the conversion of the tribe to Christianity. The Chronica Slavorum by Helmoldus and Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus are quite commonly quoted sources in the debate concerning Slavic paganism and the attempts of its Christianization. What constitutes high-value Helmoldus’ and Saxo’s works is the fact that the chronicles are an essential and primary sources when it comes to the history of the Polabian tribes – their territories and their neighboring peoples. It is also a vital link in the account of the course of Christianization on the Polabian territory. After the invasion of The Danish king Valdemar I the pagan temple, situated on the island, was destroyed and both the territorial and religious autonomy of the Rani ended. At the tip of Arkona in recent centuries, the cliffs have collapsed into the sea and the chronicles still remain as witnesses of the Slavic history of Rugen.

The article presents the course of actions undertaken by the Swedish army in the years 1708 and 1709. Both campaigns were directed against Russia, and the strategic goal outlined by the ruler of Sweden –Charles XII was to seize Moscow. At the end of 1708, however, the Swedish army was not in the foreground of the tsar’s capital, but in Ukraine, on the left bank of Dnepr. The following year the Swedes fought the battle of Poltava, which ended with their defeat. The author tries to answer the question, why did this happen? When discussing the path of Charles XII to the Poltava battlefield, he pays attention primarily to natural and objective factors (weather, surface shape, natural obstacles etc.) on which the King of Sweden had no influence. In the author’s opinion, these was this factors that largely influenced the fact that the Swedish army stood to the battle of Poltava significantly weakened and with avery little chance to win. W artykule przedstawiono przebieg działań podejmowanych przez armię szwedzką w latach 1708–1709. Obie kampanie skierowane były przeciwko Rosji, acelem strategicznym nakreślonym przez władcę Szwecji –KarolaXII było zajęcie Moskwy. W ostatecznym rozrachunku, u schyłku 1708r. wojska szwedzkie znalazły się jednak nie na przedpolu stolicy carów, ana Ukrainie Zadnieprzańskiej. W roku następnym Szwedzi stoczyli bitwę pod Połtawą, która zakończyła się ich klęską. Autor próbuje odpowiedzieć na pytanie, dlaczego tak się stało? Omawiając drogę KarolaXII na połtawskie pole bitwy, zwraca uwagę przede wszystkim na czynniki naturalne i obiektywne (pogoda, ukształtowanie powierzchni, przeszkody naturalne itd.), na które król Szwecji nie miał żadnego wpływu. Zdaniem autora to właśnie te czynniki w dużym stopniu wpłynęły na to, że szwedzka armia stanęła do walki pod Połtawą znacznie osłabiona i z niewielkimi szansami na zwycięstwo.

The Krakow writer Antonina Domańska (1853–1917) occupies a permanent place in the Polish cultural tradition as an author of literary works for children and youth, mainly historical novels. Her best known books are Paziowie króla Zygmunta (1910) and Historia żółtej ciżemki (1913). These novels were adapted, the first as Sylwester Chęciński’s film (1961) and the second as television series of Grzegorz Warchoł (1989). Polish theaters also staged modifications to the Historia żółtej ciżemki. The subject of the article is the image of Krakow in these novels as a key element of Domańska’s historical and patriotic education. The second research issue is the film, television and theatre reception of the writer’s two works. Krakowska pisarka Antonina Domańska (1853–1917) zajmuje trwałe miejsce w polskiej tradycji kulturalnej jako autorka utworów literackich dla dzieci i młodzieży, głównie powieści historycznych. Jej najbardziej znane książki to Paziowie króla Zygmunta (1910) i Historia żółtej ciżemki (1913). Powieści te doczekały się adaptacji, pierwsza – filmowej Sylwestra Chęcińskiego (1961), druga – serialowej Grzegorza Warchoła (1989). W polskich teatrach były również wystawiane przeróbki sceniczne Historii żółtej ciżemki. Tematem artykułu jest obraz Krakowa w tych powieściach jako kluczowy element edukacji historyczno-patriotycznej A. Domańskiej. Drugie zagadnienie badawcze stanowi recepcja filmowa, telewizyjna oraz teatralna dwóch utworów pisarki.

Cesarza Walensa, sprawującego rządy w latach 364–378, łączy się przede wszystkim ze straszliwą i brzemienną w skutki klęską poniesioną przez wojska rzymskie w starciu z Gotami pod Adrianopolem 9 sierpnia 378 r., w której on sam poniósł śmierć. Chrześcijanie, zwolennicy nicejskiego credo z roku 325, odczytywali jego nagły zgon jako karę Bożą za prześladowanie prawowiernych chrześcijan, za których oni sami się uważali. Sokrates z Konstantynopola, autor Historii kościelnej, będącej kontynuacją dzieła Euzebiusza z Cezarei, dostrzegł w postępowaniu cesarza Walensa sprzeczność. Historyk ów widział w nim zarówno zagorzałego chrześcijanina, który w swej wierze kierował się gorliwością, jak i wroga chrześcijan, prowadzącego przeciwko nim wojnę. Sprzeczność tę Sokrates kładł na karb samego władcy, który choć przekonany o swej wielkiej gorliwości religijnej, za nic miał zasady religii chrześcijańskiej, którymi winien się kierować. Jeśli chodzi natomiast o tytułową siłę i bezsilność, to stwierdzić trzeba, że w przekonaniu Sokratesa z Konstantynopola siła cesarza Walensa była tylko pozorna, choć na jego rozkaz przelano niemało chrześcijańskiej krwi. Bezsilność wspomnianego władcy obnażyli najpierw sami prześladowani przez niego chrześcijanie, a ostatecznie uczynił to sam Bóg, zsyłając na Imperium Romanum różnorakie kataklizmy, a na samego Walensa śmierć niegodną cesarza bez należnego mu pochówku.

The article discusses the attitude of senators to religious matters at the Sejm in 1597. It was an extremely turbulent assembly, the first one after the conclusion of the Brest Union. It shows the great commotion that this act caused in the multinational society of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The defence of Orthodoxy by Protestants also showed an alliance between dissidents. In the history of this alliance, the Sejm I am analysing occupies a special place, because for the first time in its forum there was cooperation between Orthodox and Protestants in defense of the Warsaw confederation concluded in 1573. Thanks to the use of Sejm diaries, correspondence and written newspapers, I present Sejm speeches of senators during the sessions of the Sejm. Their juxtaposition makes it possible to state that this issue played a significant role in the internal politics of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth at the end of the 16th century.

The article concerns an operetta actor – singer Józef Redo. The artist was bound for most of his career till death with Warsaw. In 1897, he was employed as an actor in the Teatr Nowości. He had a leading position on this scene until after the First World War. Later he performed in other theaters, mainly operetta, in Warsaw, less often outside the capital. He has achieved successes in all operetta actor’s specialties: in the role of amant, vaudeville, comic and characteristic. His most important creations include the Emperor in The Forester’s Daughter of George Jarno, Boni in The Csárdás Princess of Imre Kalman, Daniło in The Merry Widow and grandfather in Where the Lark Sings of Franz Lehar. Józef Redo also played in Polish films. Artykuł dotyczy aktora operetkowego – śpiewaka Józefa Redy. Przez większość kariery artysta był związany z Warszawą. W 1897 r. został zatrudniony jako aktor w tamtejszym Teatrze Nowości. Zajmował czołową pozycję na tej scenie do czasów po pierwszej wojnie światowej. Później występował w innych teatrach, głównie operetkowych, w Warszawie, rzadziej poza stolicą. Osiągnął sukcesy we wszystkich operetkowych specjalnościach aktorskich: w rolach amanckich, wodewilowych, komicznych i charakterystycznych. Do jego najważniejszych kreacji należą Cesarz w Krysi Leśniczance Georga Jarny, Boni w Księżniczce czardasza Imre Kalmana, Daniło w Wesołej wdówce i dziadek w Skowronku Franza Lehara. Józef Redo grał też w polskich filmach.

Almost everyone has heard the legend of cruel Elisabeth Báthory who bathed in the blood of young virgins to preserve eternal youth. The countess is also known as one of the bloodiest women in Europe. She is registered on the world list of Guinness records as the biggest serial killer of all time. However, there is a doubt whether she committed all crimes attributed to her. Thus, the article presents two alternative biographies of the Hungarian aristocrat: one that derives from legends, and the other that is based on historical facts recently determined by contemporary researchers of the topic. Niemal każdy słyszał legendę o okrutnej Elżbiecie Batory, która kąpała się we krwi młodych dziewic, by zachować wieczną młodość. Hrabina zapisała się na trwałe w historii jako jedna z najkrwawszych kobiet Europy. Została też wpisana na światową listę rekordów Guinnessa jako największa seryjna morderczyni wszechczasów. Jednak czy aby na pewno dopuściła się wszystkich zarzucanych jej czynów? W artykule przedstawione zostaną dwie wersje historii życia węgierskiej arystokratki: jedna, wywodząca się z legend, oraz druga, oparta na faktach, do których udało się dotrzeć współczesnym badaczom tematu.

The article describes the role of the Polish Army in the economic life of the city of Lodz in the years 1918–1939. In the city were stationed many military units and institutions at that time, thanks to which the Lodz garrison belonged to one of the largest in Poland in the years of the Second Polish Republic. The army was an important factor in the economic development of the city. Military units were shopping on the local market many different products necessary for their normal functioning. For example, the army was buying: items of equipment, food, draft animals, building materials, furniture and other elements of barracks equipment. Orders placed by the army and private purchases of soldiers ensured work for a large group of workers and craftsmen. Economic benefits from the presence of the army in the garrison in Lodz were also had by the shoemakers, tailors, hairdressers, restaurateurs, and owners of cinemas and theaters. The owners of private tenements had also large profits for renting apartments for officers. All these factors meant that the municipal authorities were interested in stationing as many military units as possible in Lodz, which had a significant impact on the city’s economic development. Artykuł opisuje rolę Wojska Polskiego w życiu gospodarczym miasta Łodzi w latach 1918–1939. W mieście stacjonowało w tym czasie wiele jednostek i instytucji wojskowych, dzięki czemu garnizon łódzki należał w latach II Rzeczypospolitej do grupy największych w Polsce. Wojsko było ważnym czynnikiem wpływającym na rozwój gospodarczy miasta. Jednostki wojskowe kupowały na lokalnym rynku wiele różnych produktów niezbędnych dla ich normalnego funkcjonowania. Armia kupowała przykładowo: elementy oporządzenia, żywność, zwierzęta pociągowe, materiały budowlane, meble i inne elementy wyposażenia koszarowego. Zamówienia składane przez armię oraz prywatne zakupy żołnierzy zapewniały pracę dużej grupie robotników i rzemieślników. Korzyści ekonomiczne z obecności wojska w łódzkim garnizonie mieli także właściciele zakładów szewskich, krawieckich, fryzjerzy, restauratorzy, czy właściciele kin i teatrów. Duże zyski mieli także właściciele prywatnych kamienic za wynajmowanie mieszkań dla oficerów. Wszystkie te czynniki powodowały, iż władze miejskie były zainteresowane stacjonowaniem w Łodzi jak największej liczby jednostek wojskowych, co znacząco wpływało na rozwój gospodarczy miasta.

Polish intelligentsia shaped over the nineteenth century was to fulfill various tasks. One of the most important was the “state service”, implemented, among others, by working on stateowned posts. The euphoria of the independence regained in 1918 accompanied the concern for the proper organizationof a state that did not even have a nationwide government, and several political centers pretended to be in power. The country was destroyed and famished, and the borders had to be marked out by armed forces, despite the fact that there was actually no uniform army. There was no administrative apparatus that would turn economic and social-political life into peaceful work. It is not surprising that the Polish intelligentsia had an important role to play in this case, and the functioning of the state depended primarily on the number and quality of personnel it could have at its disposal. It should be noted that certainly the process of building the state and creating its apparatus have activated a fairly wide circle of professionals and activists among the intelligentsia, who did even titanic work in the difficult conditions of the interwar period, which was visible in the reconstruction and organization of the new Polish state and ensuring conditions for peaceful existence. Inteligencja polska ukształtowana na przestrzeni XIX w. miała spełniać różnorodne zadania. Jednym z najważniejszych była „służba państwowa”, realizowana między innymi poprzez pracę na państwowych etatach. Euforii z odzyskanej w 1918 r. niepodległości towarzyszyła troska o odpowiednie zorganizowanie państwa, które nie miało nawet ogólnopolskiego rządu, a kilka ośrodków politycznych pretendowało do władzy. Kraj był zniszczony i wygłodzony, a do tego granice trzeba było wytyczać drogą zbrojną, pomimo tego, że właściwie nie było jednolitej armii. Brakowało aparatu administracyjnego, który przestawiłby życie gospodarcze i społeczno-polityczne na pracę pokojową. Nic dziwnego, że polska inteligencja miała w tym przypadku do odegrania istotną rolę, a funkcjonowanie państwa zależało przede wszystkim od liczebności i jakości kadr, jakimi mogło dysponować. Należy zaznaczyć, że z pewnością proces budowy państwa oraz tworzenie jego aparatu zaktywizowały do działania dość szerokie grono fachowców i działaczy wśród inteligencji, którzy wykonywali tytaniczną wręcz pracę, w trudnych przecież warunkach dwudziestolecia międzywojennego, co było widoczne w odbudowie i organizacji nowego państwa polskiego oraz zapewnieniu warunków do pokojowej egzystencji.

The main research problem undertaken in the paper is the characteristics of the intelligentsia of Lviv, co-created in the years 1864–1918 by successive generations of participants of national uprisings, including primarily veterans of the January Uprising, exiles and emigrants. Committed in a significant way in the political life at the time, in the activities of social organizations and associations as well as local government bodies, they co-created the social and political face of Galicia in the autonomous era. They played a significant role in formulating ideological programs of political circles and influenced the shape of the main press centers (“Gazeta Narodowa”, “Ruch Literacki”, “Kurier Lwowski”, “Dziennik Literacki”, “Słowo Polskie”). Finally, they were also involved in the scientific and cultural life of Lviv. These issues will be discussed in the broader context of collective fates and individual biographies of representatives of the Lviv intelligentsia about the insurgent pedigree, well-known and completely forgotten figures. The main theses of the paper were formulated on the basis of manuscript collections of Lviv archives and libraries. Zasadniczym problemem badawczym podjętym w artykule jest charakterystyka środowiska lwowskiej inteligencji, współtworzonej w latach 1864–1918 przez kolejne generacje uczestników powstań narodowych, w tym przede wszystkim weteranów powstania styczniowego, zesłańców i emigrantów. Zaangażowani w sposób znaczący w ówczesnym życiu politycznym, w działalności organizacji i stowarzyszeń społecznych oraz organów samorządowych współtworzyli społeczno-polityczne oblicze Galicji w dobie autonomicznej. Odegrali znaczącą rolę w formułowaniu programów ideowych środowisk politycznych oraz wpływali na kształt głównych ośrodków prasowych („Gazety Narodowej”, „Ruchu Literackiego”, „Kuriera Lwowskiego”, „Dziennika Literackiego”, „Słowa Polskiego”). Wreszcie też angażowali się w życiu naukowym i kulturalnym Lwowa. Zagadnienia te omówione zostaną w szerszym kontekście losów zbiorowych oraz indywidualnych biografii przedstawicieli lwowskiej inteligencji o powstańczym rodowodzie, postaci znanych i zupełnie zapomnianych. Główne tezy referatu sformułowane zostały w oparciu o zbiory rękopiśmienne lwowskich archiwów i bibliotek.

During the Soviet occupation of Polish eastern borderlands in 1939–1941 thousands of foresters were arrested and deported to distant regions of Soviet Union. They were forced to work and live in poor conditions. After German invasion on Soviet Union, foresters such as Polish citizens were granted amnesty, which gave them possibility to move from prisons and labor camps. Some of them decided to join Polish Millitary Forces formed on Soviet teritory. The aim of the Oki article is to review documents from archive of Hoover Institution related to Polish foresters serving in Anders Army. Paper consist of analytical part and annex enlisting more than 350 names of soldiers. List additionally contains data of foresters who left their memoires about their stay in Soviet Union.

What Maria Karasińska has left behind, is a short diary “Memories from Siberia” (May 1940 – May 1946). It tells the reader that she was born in Lviv on March 25, 1914 and wanted to be pianist. Having graduated from high school, she started learning singing and piano at the Lviv Conservatoire. The war interrupted her education, and in 1940 (more specifically, the night of 12/13 April) she was deported with her family to Kazakhstan, to the East Kazakhstan Region. Karasińska, who was frail and feeble, had to perform heavy physical work, such as carrying heavy wet peat. Despite a series of sad experiences, diseases and death of her relatives, she persevered. She returned to Poland in June 1946 and continued to learn singing at the age of 33. For twenty five years or so, she gave concerts as a soloist at the Mining Philharmonic, later renamed the Silesian Philharmonic. She died on August 15, 2005 in Zabrze. She is remembered as a highly popular and respected artist.

With the re-entry of the Red Army into Poland in 1944, another phase of Soviet repressions began. The internees (deprived of liberty without being sentenced by any judicial body) members of the Polish Independence Underground were held mainly in the camps subordinated to GUPVI NKVD. They were camps in Ostashkov, Ryazan and Borovichy, among many others. A special role was played by the „Smersh” counter-intelligence camp in Kharkov, to which high-ranking representatives of various divisions of the independence underground had been sent. Considering living conditions prevailing in those camps, it should be acknowledged that they depended enormously on the composition of the prisoners. In the camp in Ryazan, where mainly officers of the independence underground were kept, the living conditions were much better than in the camp in Borovichy, where the rank-and-file soldiers of the Home Army and the Peasants’ Battalions were imprisoned. This concerned a food system, sanitary and hygienic conditions, medical care, as well as type of work performed by the prisoners. The best living conditions were in the Kharkov camp, although the internees were completely isolated from the outside world.

The article describes the process of detaining civilians by the agents of NKVD nad SMERSH (counter-intelligence agency in the Red Army) in the years 1944–1945, when the Red Army was entering to Central and Eastern Europe. The fortunes of arrested by soviets are presented by the example of one of three crucial camps located in Siberia, where people detained in 1945 were sent; between them there were also Poles – mainly from Eastern Pomerania and Upper Silesia. It was camp number 503 with its headquarters in Kemerowo. Basic historical records used in the study are reports written by the camp’s management to Main Administration for Affairs of Prisoners of War and Internees (GUPVI) and the witnesses’ accounts of their stay in the camp. The article describes the organization of the camp, living conditions of the detainees, the ways of employing them in siberian industry, question of deaths and comeback of these prisoners, who managed to survive the stay in the camp.

The article is based on a fragment of the diary of Władysław Zahorski, still in the manuscript, entitled “My memories” and rich literature on the subject. It was written down years later, therefore it should be analyzed with great sensitivity and it should be careful to formulate conclusions. The author of the diary was a well-known Vilnius doctor, cultural and social activist and the author of many works on the history and monuments of Vilnius. The article deals with the problems of exiles in Ufa, observed from the position of a child from the intelligentsia family from western Krai. The author came from a family, whose social position and material status were definitely better than those Poles who were subjected to forced exile in post-January realities. In the diary it can be found the unknown and valuable information, that complements the current state of knowledge about the life of exiles of this part of Siberia. In addition, it creates a cognitive perspective concerning the exiles in the consciousness of a generation of insurgents’ children in 1863, to which Władysław Zahorski belonged.

Florian Bohdanowicz is a translator of Georg Kennan’s book “Siberia”, which has been banned many times in Russia. He was sentenced for five years of exile to Siberia in 1879 for belonging to revolutionary organizations by the Military Court in Kiev. His journey through Siberia to the destination, that is, the gold mine on the river Kara, lasted nearly eight months. The journey, which he traveled successively: by rail (summer), steamboat (autumn), on foot and kibitki (in winter), in an extremely interesting way, he described in little-known memories. According to Bogdanowicz’s memoirs, the hardest parts of the prisoners’ journey to Siberia were the steamer cruise and their stay in prisons (in Kiev, Mcensk, Tyumen, Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk). Helena from Majewski Kirkorowa was an actress of the Vilnius and Krakow scene. She started her career in Vilnius. After marrying Adam Honory Kirkor, archaeologist, publisher, publicist, editor and theater critic, she got involved in an affair with the poet Ludwik Kondratowicz (Władysław Syrokomla). After parting with her husband, she came to Krakow, where she performed in the theater of Juliusz Pfeifra. Then she came to Warsaw. She was quickly involved in conspiracy. There was a courier of the National Government, transporting messages and commands across the border. Romuald Traugutt, the last dictator of the January Uprising, was arrested in her apartment at Smolna Street in Warsaw. She was soon imprisoned and Kirkorowa. The court sentenced her to settle in Siberia with the deprivation of all rights, which soon turned into eight years of hard work. In August 1864, Kirkorowa was deported to Siberia. During the exile, she married Antoni Pióro. After returning from exile, she lived in Vitebsk, where she died on January 5, 1900.

The article concerns individual and collective experiences of Poles deported to Siberia in the second half of the 19th century. It is based on the 19th century memoirs and Polish and Russian accounts from the 19th and 20th century. An integral part of the article is the problem of the myth of Siberia, and its picture of martyrdom of which perpetuated by the 19th century literature, romantic poetry, and memoirs, including the works of Agaton Giller’s. A noticeable role in the making of the myth of Siberia played the works of Zygmunt Librowicz’s (Poles in Siberia, Cracow 1884) and Michal Janik’s (History of Poles in Siberia, Cracow 1928), among others. The article mentions numerous factors creating the myth of Siberia, including the system of repressions against the deportees, the myth of the sentenced to katorga terms, the myths concerning the attitude of Russian administration and civilians to the deportees, the cooperation between Polish and Russian exiled revolutionaries and marriages between the deportees and local Siberian women. When the Constitution was ratified on May 3, 1791, establishing good relations with Russia was the most important issue for the security of the Commonwealth. As leaders of the Great Diet noticed that prosperous situation in the Polish-Lithuanian state’s international relations was ending, they suggested Stanisław August to turn to Russia. Because of their initiative, the king introduced several members of the St. Petersburg court to the Guardians of the Laws. Yet, it did not reorient Polish foreign policy. Having strengthened his position, Stanisław August was delaying direct talks with the empress. He was convinced, that to avoid Russian intervention in the Commonwealth’s internal affairs, one should not provoke Russians and appease any internal conflicts. That assumption turned to be wrong, though. Contrary to the views of the vast majority of Polish historians, who believed that Russian intervention in Poland was predetermined, the St. Petersburg court was divided, when it came to the policy on the Polish-Lithuanian state. Some advisers of Catherine II believed, that without a final agreement with German courts, one should not start a war with the Commonwealth, because it would be hard, long-lasting and costly. Yet, views of Polish malcontents and empress’s favorite, Platon A. Zubov, were taken into account, and a military operation was launched, without looking at Vienna and Berlin’s position. A passive diplomacy turned out to be a fatal mistake of the Polish king and his advisers. The concept of a limited warfare was equally wrong. The weak resistance of the Polish army strengthened the position of the empress’s favorite. When Stanisław August’s letter to Catherine II arrived at St. Petersburg, already in the course of war, at the Russian court a group of war opponents took a final attempt to stop hostilities, and start negotiations with the Commonwealth’s ruler. However, successes of empress’s troops, that rapidly moved towards Warsaw after the withdrawing Poles, favored supporters of an armed intervention. The king and his advisers ceased to believe in the possibility of victory too soon, and capitulated at the time, when there was still a chance to continue the war, a prolongation of which by several weeks might have prompted the empress to start peace negotiations. It was a great political mistake, which turned out to be the beginning of the end of the First Republic. Po uchwaleniu Konstytucji 3 maja ułożenie stosunków z Rosją było najważniejszą kwestią z punktu widzenia bezpieczeństwa Rzeczypospolitej. Widząc wygasanie pomyślnej dla państwa polsko-litewskiego koniunktury w stosunkach międzynarodowych, przywódcy Sejmu Wielkiego zasugerowali Stanisławowi Augustowi dokonanie zwrotu ku Rosji. To z ich inicjatywy król wprowadził do Straży Praw kilku stronników dworu petersburskiego. Nie pociągnęło to jednak za sobą reorientacji polskiej polityki zagranicznej. Umocniwszy swoją pozycję, Stanisław August zwlekał z nawiązaniem bezpośrednich rozmów z cesarzową. Był przekonany, że wystarczy nie prowokować Rosjan i łagodzić wszelkie konflikty wewnętrzne, żeby uniknąć rosyjskiej interwencji w wewnętrzne sprawy Rzeczypospolitej. Założenie to okazało się błędne. Wbrew twierdzeniu ogromnej większości historyków polskich, którzy uważali, że rosyjska interwencja w Polsce była z góry przesądzona, na dworze petersburskim do ostatniej chwili trwały spory i dyskusje dotyczące kształtu polityki wobec państwa polsko-litewskiego. Część doradców Katarzyny II była zdania, że bez ostatecznego porozumienia z dworami niemieckimi nie należy zaczynać wojny z Rzecząpospolitą, gdyż będzie ona ciężka, długotrwała i kosztowna. Namowy polskich malkontentów sprawiły jednak, że ostatecznie zwyciężyła, lansowana przez faworyta cesarzowej – Płatona A. Zubowa, koncepcja rozpoczęcia działań zbrojnych bez oglądania się na stanowisko Wiednia i Berlina. Bierność dyplomatyczna okazała się fatalnym błędem polskiego króla i jego doradców. Równie błędna była koncepcja prowadzenia wojny w ograniczonym tylko zakresie. Słaby opór polskich armii umacniał bowiem pozycję faworyta cesarzowej. Już w trakcie działań wojennych, po nadejściu do Petersburga listu Stanisława Augusta do Katarzyny II, grupa przeciwników wojny na dworze rosyjskim podjęła ostatnią próbę przerwania działań zbrojnych i rozpoczęcia rozmów z władcą Rzeczypospolitej. Sukcesy wojsk cesarzowej, które w ślad za wycofującymi się Polakami zmierzały szybko w kierunku Warszawy działały jednak na korzyść zwolenników zbrojnej interwencji. Król i jego doradcy zbyt szybko przestali wierzyć w możliwość odniesienia zwycięstwa i skapitulowali w chwili, kiedy wciąż istniały szanse na kontynuowanie wojny, której przedłużenie o kilka tygodni mogło skłonić cesarzową do wyrażenia zgody na rozpoczęcie negocjacji pokojowych. Był to fatalny błąd polityczny, który okazał się w konsekwencji początkiem końca pierwszej Rzeczypospolitej. The subject of the article is the Russo-Turkish war of 1787–1792, more precisely the campaign of 1789. The issue will be discussed basing on the information published in „Pamiętnik Historyczno-Polityczno-Ekonomiczny”. The journal was coming out in Warsaw in the years 1782–1792, and Piotr Świtkowski was its editor and publisher. Since the beginning of the Russo-Turkish war, which Austria joined as Catherine II’s ally in February 1788, „Pamiętnik” was posting periodic reports on the activities at the Turkish front. It described the most important battles as well as less significant skirmishes, informed on the movements and the status of the fighting armies, printed the war complements and biographical notes of military commanders. As a supporter of pro-Turkish politics, Świtkowski spoke of the Ottoman Porte and inhabitants of Turkey with fondness, praised the bravery of a Turkish soldier, and positively reflected on the military reforms in that country. Przedmiotem artykułu jest wojna rosyjsko-turecka z lat 1787–1792, a ściślej rzecz ujmując – kampania roku 1789. Zagadnienie to zostanie omówione na podstawie informacji publikowanych na łamach „Pamiętnika Historyczno-Polityczno-Ekonomicznego”. Pismo to ukazywało się w Warszawie w latach 1782–1792, a jego redaktorem i wydawcą był ksiądz Piotr Świtkowski. Od początku wojny rosyjsko-tureckiej, do której w lutym 1788 r. przyłączyła się Austria jako sojusznik Katarzyny II, „Pamiętnik” zamieszczał periodyczne sprawozdania z działań na froncie tureckim. Opisywał najważniejsze bitwy, ale też mało istotne potyczki, informował o ruchach i stanie walczących armii, drukował etaty wojsk i wiadomości biograficzne o dowódcach. Świtkowski był zwolennikiem polityki protureckiej i jako taki z sympatią wypowiadał się na temat Porty i jej mieszkańców, chwalił waleczność tureckiego żołnierza, pozytywnie odnosił się też do reform wojskowych przeprowadzanych w tym państwie.
