The article discusses race, class and the schools of the U.S South states during the Antebellum period. Particular focus is given to the University of North Carolina president Rev. Joseph Caldwell's campaign for railroad development and public education. North Carolina Superintendent of Common Schools Calvin Henderson Wiley's ambivalent views on racial and social inequality, including the disparity between his private convictions and his political actions, are presented. Perspectives on U.S. primary education and the inclusion of blacks within it are also presented.
