This article situates Chinese paper children immigration during the Exclusion Era and the pre–1965 period in the combined framework of ancient Chinese adoption and transnational kinship formation. It examines, by reading paper children's oral histories and related sources, how the paper children system was rooted in, borrowed from, and modified ancient Chinese adoption practices, through which Chinese immigrants formed transnational, fictive kinship in the United States that were mixed with both blood and non-blood relationships. Since the Exclusion Era, a discourse about Chinese immigrants, especially paper children being illegal, was so powerful that immigration historians seldom question this assumption, even as they critique the institutionalized exclusion that created such illegality. This article, however, challenges this assumption by arguing that paper children immigration generated de facto adoptive relationships between paper children and their paper families, and that these adoptive relationships further sustained paper children's legal status as American citizens. Treating paper children as de facto adoptive members of their paper families, this article brings to the surface a fact that by emphasizing their illegality, the dominant discourse only acknowledged their hidden, original identities and deemed parent-child relationships based on blood ties as the only legitimate ones. This article, extracted from a larger study, is attentive to the national folk culture of African-American communities--especially rumor and legend--in a number of city centers. The study begins with Washington, D.C., as a representative model to examine the role of complexion-related lore in black neighborhoods, organizations, and institutions, and then extends outward to other urban areas. Complexion lore, the article argues, functioned as a sophisticated negotiation of racism, wherein black residents complicated American urban principles of inclusion and exclusion by integrating color notions into institutional oral history. This article examines the historical and political rise and decline of the University of Washington (UW) Chicana/o Studies Movement (CSM) between the years of 1968 and 1980. It argues that the CSM emerged in part due to the growth of local Chicana / o community radicalism and activism throughout the Pacific Northwest. Section one investigates student activism and radicalism on the UW campus. The second section critically analyzes the political struggles and academic landscape of the CSM on the Seattle campus. In January 1945, the Red Army began its Vistula-Oder offensive forcing the German army to abandon many territories that it occupied west of the Vistula River. The offensive also resulted in the westward evacuation of thousands of ethnic Germans, including Mennonites, seeking refuge in the shrinking Third Reich. This paper examines the evacuation strategies and experiences of Mennonites from Deutsch Wymyschle and Gąbin, Poland during this chaotic time. It also investigates the Red Army's brutal treatment of Mennonites following their capture and during the journey back to their villages in Poland. Finally, the paper discusses the way in which Nazi authorities exploited this mass evacuation not only for their own administrative and military purposes, but also to slow down the advancing Red Army. Many people have long-term commitments that require coordination and cooperation with others. To achieve this, we construct plans to settle when, how, and for how long to pursue certain goals rather than others. This raises an interesting cognitive problem, namely that individuals can, at any given moment, manage significantly less information than they will need to accomplish their goals. Call this the Problem of Scarce Information. The solution requires a special self-regulatory system that strategically manages the varying informational demands of one's activity. This paper argues that vigilance has structural and functional characteristics that make it apt to play this role. This paper explores an arts-based research practice of tracing the image of two Salvadoran migrants, Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez and his 2-year-old daughter Valeria, drowned in the Rio Grande in 2019. This practice came about while writing a manuscript about images of children's and immigrant's precarity. Through an embodied, repetitive, and solitary practice of tracing that engages in a postmodern ethics of difference and distance, I consider the co-constructedness of the human condition and how my practice ultimately became an act of relationality and mourning. - Nannie Helen Burroughs, Address to the National Baptist Convention, 1909 (Stewart [56]) In 1909, Nannie Helen Burroughs, one of the most outspoken Black leaders of the twentieth century, announced to the National Baptist Convention (NBC) her ambitious labor agenda of organizing Black domestic workers through her National Training School for Women and Girls (NTS) in Washington, D.C.[1] Her speech marked a momentous and hard-won occasion. Burroughs and NAWE organizers implemented aspects of the NTS domestic science curriculum in programs housed by the headquarters. The Worker: Molding National Sentiment for a Domestic Worker-Centered Movement Burroughs deepened her mission of developing a Black labor movement centered on domestic workers through the columns of I The Worker i , the NTS monthly publication.[19] She began producing the paper in 1912 and housed it in the printing department of the school after it opened in 1916. The NAWE was the closest Burroughs came to translating her educational mission for the NTS and vision of domestic workers' leadership into a labor union. White women and men who led national and international labor organizations refused to represent the specific concerns of domestic workers, even those of white domestic workers.[33] Impatient with the racial and gender politics of white union organizing, Burroughs declared that Black women could become a powerful force by organizing themselves into a labor union. The Greek War of Independence (1821–1832) and the abortive November Uprising in Poland (1830–1831) were two major developments in nineteenth-century European history, and both became central to foundational narratives of European modernity. These events have, however, received scant attention by American immigration historians. Despite this neglect, both were integral to how the New York Truth Teller, the leading Irish Catholic newspaper in New York in the years before the Famine, attempted to consolidate an Irish Catholic ethnic identity in the United States. The Truth Teller's contributors interpreted the Greek and Polish conflicts through reference to a specific narrative of Irish history as one of unparalleled suffering. In doing so, the paper kept American Irish Catholics informed about contemporary events in Europe. In comparing Irish Catholic history to the contemporary struggles of Greece and Poland, the Truth Teller insisted that neither Greece nor Poland had experienced suffering comparable to the persecution of Protestant Ascendency Ireland. This article is a corrective to scholarship that has underemphasized the importance of the Truth Teller to Irish Catholic identity in the United States before the Famine and undervalued the relevance of European events for the construction of American Irish Catholic identity. This paper discusses the history of the Polish book collection at the Chicago Public Library (CPL) from the time the Foreign Language Section (FOL) in the main library was established, until the present. The author has used both primary and secondary sources. Many of them are archival materials still unpublished (FOL Annual Report Bulletin from the Office of the Librarian, etc.) and stored in the Special Collections and Preservation Division at the Harold Washington Library Center (HWLC) in Chicago. The names of many dedicated librarians who have worked and are working now at FOL are provided. The article tries to answer the question: How did they help new immigrants to adjust to the American way of life? A considerable part of this paper is devoted to the programming aimed at Chicago's Polish community. These programs took place at CPL from its beginning, but more were scheduled in the 1970s and the 1980s, when American libraries begin to promote multiculturalism and diversity.
