Infrastructure investments can be used as instruments for long-term economic policies. Furthermore, the need to improve transport infrastructure, which counts as an infrastructure investment, is increasing day by day. This is due to the advantages that transport infrastructure provides for communications and economic growth such as time saving and ease of access. When looking at the transport infrastructure in those countries that lead world trade it can be seen that their highway networks are highly developed and that highway networks can be the determinant of economic development. Highways make up the bulk of the investments made in transport infrastructure in Turkey. In this study the long-term relationship between transport infrastructure and economic growth in Turkey based on the length of highways is examined using the Cobb-Douglas production function. Using the Johansen co-integration test based on a VAR analysis performed using annual data from 1988-2015 it was found out that the long-term changes in the transport infrastructure in Turkey have had a positive and significant effect on economic growth.
