THE following list, the first since the publication of Mlle Pellechet's, in 1895, is a contribution to the establishment of the history and authenticity of the fifteenth century printed texts of the Legenda aurea.1 It brings together, in convenient form, the results of the latest bibliographical research, revising various ascriptions of earlier date. Such a list, appended to a study of the codices, is indispensable to the preparation of the much-needed definitive edition of the Legenda aurea. It will be noted that my list departs somewhat from the order of entries in the works of Copinger, and Pellechet. For example, Copinger's 6380, the first in his Latin list, and Pell (V)'s 70 are RFS 89. Copinger's 148 entries (3526-3528, 4626-4627, and 6380-6522) are reduced to 122.2 Eleven sine nota (3526, 6381, 6382, 6391, 6395, 6402, 6404, 6405, 6406, 6477, 6496), one listed as a Latin edition [6436, citing Pell (V) 30, and Brunet V 1869, which is a French translation], one 'Doubtful ed.' (6488), one (6480) which is not a Legenda aurea,3 one Dutch translation Summer part (6515, which cites Campbell 1762), and one German translation Summer part (3528)4 are omitted. Ten entries are combined with others. A 'Latin' edition (6437) is an Italian translation (6500. RFS 165, after Burger, p. 207). Pellechet's list is reduced from 140 (2-185, plus 6 'additions') to 120 entries. One 'Ed. douteuse' (42), one which is not a Legenda aurea (90), one Dutch translation Summer part (124), and ten sine nota (71, 74, 81, 82, 85, 86, 106, 107, 112, 180) are omitted. Seven numbers are combined with others. One 'Latin' edition (32) is an Italian translation (184. RFS 165); and another (30) is a French translation (not entered in her French list. RFS 123).5

portui Adriatico / portui Andriacatico. Adriatisches Meer werden zwar im Altertum gelegentlich selbst die Gewasser zwischen Malta und Kreta genannt (cf. Act. Apost. Cap. 27), und bei Jordanes wird Rhodus die Metropole der Adriatischen Inseln genannt; jedoch ist hier ohne Zweifel Andriaca (oder Andriacama) gemeint, welches der Hafen von Myra war; wie es in der tbersetzung, ohne direckt den Namen Andriaca einzufuhren, ausgedruckt ist. Adriatico, welche die Hss. durchweg haben, ist also aus Andriacatico verderbt. 'Andriaca ist eine alte Stadt in Lycien gelegen, wie Ptolomaeus meldet. Appianus schreibt, es sey der Seehafen derer Einwohner der Stadt Myre gewesen.' 'Andriaciama ist eine Stadt in Lycien, unter der Bothmiissigkeit der Einwohner zu Myre gelegen, wie Metaphrastes in dem Leben St Nicholai schreibt. Ortelius muthmast mit Recht, ja er kann mit Grunde behaupten, es sei Andriaca, dessen Ptolomaeus gedenkt.'2

THE legend of Saint Nicholas, in Jacobus de Varagine's Legenda aurea, contains a word which has been a source of wonderment and annoyance for centuries. Among the acts of Saint Nicholas was the suppression of the worship of Diana in the province of Lycia. Naturally this angered the devil: 'Iratus ex hoc contra eum hostis antiqus oleum mydiacon quod contra naturam in aqua et lapidibus ardet confecit." Disguised as a religious woman, he met a group of pilgrims traveling by sea to visit Saint Nicholas's church. Regretting his inability to make this pious journey, he persuaded them to take some of the oil to spread on the walls of the nave, as an act of devotion. Saint Nicholas appeared to them miraculously before they reached the shore, and threw the oil overboard, 'and it was seen to burn on the sea for a long time contrary to nature.' The earliest use which I have seen of the term 'mydiacon' in connection with Saint Nicholas appears in the Vita Nicolai by Johannes Diaconus, written in the ninth century: 'eiusque,conficere oleum quod Midiacon dicitur.'2 This treatise was the principal source used for the legend composed by Jacobus de Varagine, ca. 1260-1270. In the eleventh century the grammarian Papias considered the word important enough to be included in his Vocabularium, but his definition 'MEDIACON, confectio olei omnia comburens'leaves much to be desired.3 A slightly different form occurs in the twelfth century Encomium Neophyti: ,ua/yctXatov Mq5etaX6v.'4 Its last appearance before inclusion in the Legenda aurea, was in the Speculum historiale, compiled ca 1244, by Vincentius Bellovacensis who also relied chiefly on the Vita by Johannes Diaconus for his legend of Saint Nicholas.5 In twenty-six Latin editions, printed at Augsburg, Basel, Cologne, LyonN, Nuremberg, Reutlingen, Strassburg, Ulm, and Venice, between 1472 and 1496, I found ten different forms: 'midiacon' (1481), 'midiaton' (b'ef. 1478, 1485, 1486, 1487, 1488), 'midiatro' (1480, 1482), 'midyaton' (1490), 'midyatro' (1476), 'mydiacon' (1476), 'mydiaton' (1486, 1490, 1492, 1496, twice), 'mydyaton' (ca 1472-74, ca 1475, 1481, 1482, 1483), 'nudiatio' (1478), 'oleum in ydiatro' (1478
