Embedded librarianship is an inevitable outcome of the information era. Since the concept of embedded librarianship emerged in 2004, a flurry of papers have been published. In China, many related research papers have also been published, but few of them focus on the practice of embedded librarianship in libraries of Chinese universities. This article investigates the current progress and practice of embedded librarianship in China. A total of 84 Chinese university libraries were surveyed. This article demonstrates that a few university libraries have achieved promising embedded practices, but most remain in the initial stages. Most librarians do not clearly understand the concept of embedded librarianship. To date, the embedded model is still in the transforming stage, and incentive mechanisms and evaluation systems have not been perfected. The preservation of paper-based artifacts is an essential issue for collection management in academic libraries. In recent years, the library science profession has often favored reformatting through microfilm or digitization, assuming too quickly that information matters, whereas an artifact's medium does not. However, much recent humanities scholarship has demonstrated the significance of physical artifacts per se. In fact, it is often the most cutting-edge scholarship on race, gender, and history that requires the physical artifact itself for research. Although librarians obviously cannot save every physical artifact, any decision on which artifacts to preserve, deaccession, or reformat (and, for that matter, on how to reformat) requires an understanding of the importance of the original physical format. Since texts acquire meaning through an intricate interplay between physical form and abstract information, the reduction of texts to abstract information alone evinces a misunderstanding of the artifacts in our care and an inadequate theory on which to base preservation decisions. As a university's information resource center, the library has always provided services for teachers and students. However, there is a lack of in-depth research on the relationship between the allocation of library resources and the competitiveness of universities in innovation and entrepreneurship (CUIE). Clarifying that relationship could help optimize library resources to enhance CUIE and enrich the empirical research system of library science. Based on clarifying the composition of library resources, correlation and regression analyses were used to verify the effect of library resource allocation on CUIE. The results show that human, academic, and spatial resources of the library can improve CUIE. The quality of human resources is more important than quantity for CUIE. For academic resources, electronic resources play a greater role than paper resources in CUIE, and spatial resources have the least effect. This article considers the artists' book collections in two academic libraries: New York University, where books circulate routinely, and Cornell University, where books circulate by special arrangement. The authors examine how these collections were formed, their evolution, the challenges and advantages to having open collections, recommendations for libraries considering making their holdings available to patrons in the open stacks, and how these initiatives can contribute to a more equitable and inclusive library environment. Libraries have long been crucial institutions for the humanities. However, rarely have humanities scholars reflected on how central libraries have historically been to their research and scholarship. As digitization of library and archival materials accelerate, it is timely that humanities scholars reflect more substantially on the roles of these institutions. This article starts from the premise that humanities scholarship is a networked activity in which libraries, universities, and a range of other institutions play crucial but changing roles in sustaining this work. To explore this argument, two major research libraries in Australia in the 1950s and 1960s are discussed—the Mitchell Library, located in the heart of Sydney, and the National Library of Australia, located in the capital Canberra. With both libraries occupying iconic buildings erected in very different eras, they presented themselves physically as worthy of their claim to national leadership. Their status as well as the actual physical spaces of the libraries played significant roles in shaping how humanities research was conducted within them in this period as well as the scholarly persona of those undertaking this research. Similarly, the seemingly quotidian practices of such libraries were central to molding modern research cultures of the Australian humanities. The practices of collection management and acquisition in the 1950s and 1960s were crucial to the formation of particular fields of study and to their growing prominence in Australia. This research investigated student perceptions of the level of digital inclusion and the difficulties they face in using information services at the University of Jordan library. A questionnaire was distributed to students with physical disability (mobility, hearing, visual) at the University of Jordan (N = 284) of whom 173 responded. A low level of digital inclusion of students with disabilities in the University of Jordan library information services was confirmed. Accordingly, academic libraries need to be more inclusive of students with disabilities in their information services. The study will be useful for library managers to realize their libraries' role towards the local community. The result of this research will provide insights for librarians, academic professionals and stakeholders to plan for the digital inclusion of people with disabilities in libraries' information services. This research investigates how academic and public library makerspaces transitioned to online maker programming during COVID-19. Using a collective case study methodology based on interviews with library staff, the findings describe three resources that supported the online transition—existing knowledge, technology infrastructure and staff with technology expertise, and interorganizational collaboration—while navigating challenges related to logistics, lack of staff and training, substitution for the benefits of experiential learning, facilitation of online interactions, online marketing and program assessment, and social issues. The findings illustrate how online maker programming has expanded through changes in approaches. This article illustrates an increased level of accessibility, new skills for future maker programming, and changes in perceptions about online learning and making, as three central outcomes. Libraries are under pressure to prove their worth and may not have achieved this fully successfully. There is a resultant growing requirement for value and impact measurement in academic and research libraries. This essay reviews the natural history of library performance measurement and suggests that proof of worth will be measured by the higher-order beneficial effects that libraries deliver. Evaluation within current frames of reference will therefore be insufficient. Compelling proof will reside in transcendent contribution beyond immediate temporal, spatial, and influential boundaries of libraries. Answers to value contribution will not arise from goals but from values, as concepts of value depend on values systems. A reflection on the meaning of value for libraries is presented. A new, higher-order framework for evaluation and performance measurement based on a values scorecard is suggested. The concept of the transcendent library is offered as a route to further progress. This theoretical article examines the conceptual premises of the research and practice of information literacy (IL) in the workplace in relation to research on knowledge creation in the field of knowledge management. As with education more generally, IL should prepare students for life after formal schooling ends. How can we make the leap, though, from IL in the educational context to successful participation in an information-rich work environment? A hermeneutic phenomenological analysis of IL and knowledge creation presents IL as a way of being able to sense, live, and be in the world with an open and dialogic attitude. This approach might offer some clues that bridge IL in the two environments while extending IL practices in the Association of College and Research Libraries "Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education." This article addresses concerns about the effect of extradisciplinary researchers on recent rankings of library and information science (LIS) school researchers' productivity by proposing a measure based on Laura Manzari's 2013 study of LIS journal prestige. Journal ratings from Manzari's study are assigned to the publications in each of more than 400 LIS faculty-researcher curricula vitae. A cumulative prestige rating for each researcher's publications is then calculated, and rankings for faculty members and LIS programs are derived. The findings indicate that the cumulative prestige rating is a strong indicator of professor, comparing favorably with early publications of Budd, while diminishing the impact of shifts toward a greater number of extradisciplinary researchers in LIS education on the rankings of top contributors to LIS literature. These findings are important for offering an alternative perspective of scholarly productivity. In more anecdotal histories of the library, individual libraries and collectors tend to fade into an undifferentiated mass of books. In other hands, these libraries might amount to so many examples of biblioclasm, but in the hands of Pettegree and Der Weduwen, these ex-libraries change over time, advancing different narratives as they flicker through the book. As the authors imply through the subtitle, the history of libraries is tenuous, contingent, and determined just as much by the books and readers libraries exclude as those they bring through their doors. Beginning in March 2020, academic libraries experienced dramatic changes to services resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent stay-at-home orders. Architecture libraries in particular serve a unique user group who are still partially reliant on print resources and were therefore significantly challenged. This article outlines changes to library services and resources, and it considers which transitions are likely to have long-term impact on library functions. Data from two surveys circulated during the early and late stages of the pandemic is compared, contrasted, and supported by research literature. Using a quantitative questionnaire survey, this study investigates the perceptions and attitudes of a group of library and information science (LIS) students toward a variety of library user education (LUE) programs provided by Sun Yat-Sen University Library, located in Guangzhou, China. This study also compares the data of LIS students and non-LIS students (of various disciplines) to highlight their unique characteristics. In total, 457 responses were collected for this questionnaire survey (231 LIS, 226 non-LIS). Findings of this study reveal that the LIS student group placed a higher value on the importance of LUE programs. Unexpectedly, the LIS group gave slightly lower scores in rating certain aspects of LUE librarians' professional competence. The seemingly limitless amount of false information online, especially about important political and current events, has become an increasingly sizable problem for the health of democratic governance around the world, most especially in the realm of social media. Misinformation online now has significant tangible real-world impacts, with libraries being the best situated social institution to help prepare all users to identify misinformation and navigate through the online environments in which it lives. This article proposes the idea of lifelong information literacy—the teaching and reinforcing information literacy to all users at every opportunity. The constantly changing nature of misinformation online merits treating information literacy education as a continual process for all libraries. For example, a dealer operating out of a small outfit might offer a book to a colleague working in a larger bookstore, who, in turn, sells the book to a library like ours. On December 9, 2021, the Bibliographical Society of America hosted a virtual roundtable which brought together experts from key libraries and organizations dedicated to the preservation of colonial Latin American books and manuscripts in the United States and Mexico. There is currently a dearth of research on African American college students and their interactions in academic libraries. The purpose of this quantitative study is to investigate whether African American college students view academic libraries as welcoming places and to identify factors that are most influential in their perceptions of welcomeness. Adopting the theoretical lens of "library in the life of the user," we administered a national online survey questionnaire to 160 black college students attending non-historically black colleges and universities in the United States. The survey data were analyzed by employing correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis to test our hypotheses. The analytical results showed that participants felt welcomed in academic libraries, and library as place and information needs were significant factors that affected students' perceptions of welcomeness. Stauffer acknowledges the space and budgeting constraints under which libraries operate, but suggests that the removal of the ability to work with distinct physical exemplars of books will hinder humanities scholarship. Within the peer-reviewed literature, there is a shortage of experimental and quasi-experimental studies examining libraries’ impact on children’s early literacy development. Therefore, Project VIEWS2 (Valuable Initiatives in Early Learning That Work Successfully 2) used a quasi-experimental design to understand whether an intervention to train public library storytime providers in early literacy principles makes a difference in children’s early literacy skills. In the experimental group, comparisons of preintervention and postintervention data showed statistically significant increases in the early literacy behaviors of the providers and attendees in the experimental group. There were no significant changes in the early literacy behaviors of control group providers and their attendees. A purposeful focus on early literacy principles makes a difference in storytime programs and in early literacy behaviors when children attend storytime. Zine collections are becoming an increasingly popular addition to public and academic library holdings. Although academics have made strong arguments for the value of zines' inclusion as part of our cultural heritage, current research does not focus on zine authors' perspectives. The Sonoma State University Library Art Committee curates exhibits and develops programming for its library gallery to support the library and university missions, the library's curriculum philosophy, and the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. These exhibits complement various disciplines, foster curiosity, provide opportunities for reflection, present primary sources for research and inspiration, and invite campus and community engagement. The Art Committee also develops course-integrated programming and aligns exhibit components with the ACRL Framework to engage visitors with information-literacy concepts. E-content revolution, technological advances, and ever-shrinking budgets oblige libraries to efficiently allocate their limited resources between collection and services. Unfortunately, resource allocation is a complex process due to the diversity of data sources and formats required to be analyzed prior to decision making, as well as the lack of efficient methods of integration. The contribution of this article is twofold. We first propose an evaluation framework to holistically assess academic libraries. To do so, a four-pronged theoretical framework is used in which the library system and collection are analyzed from the perspective of users and internal stakeholders. Second, we present a data warehouse architecture that integrates, processes, and stores the holistically based collected data. By proposing this holistic approach, we aim to provide an integrated solution that assists library managers to make economic decisions based on a perspective of the library situation that is as realistic as possible. With the rapid increase in the demand for new digital services, the high cost of information, and the dramatic economic slowdown, libraries have been pressured to improve their services at lower costs. To cope with these conditions, library managers must improve their knowledge and understanding of cost behavior, as well as be aware of the different costs involved in the library. Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing ðTDABCÞ is a cost management technique that allows for developing accurate cost information on a wide range of activities. Few case studies have been implemented in libraries regarding very specific processes such as interlibrary loan and acquisition processes. More research is still needed to determine whether TDABC is useful and feasible to implement for a more extensive set of library activities. Games and other forms of play are used in today's libraries to attract underserved patrons, to introduce patrons to other library resources and services, and to facilitate engagement between library patrons. While many perceive gaming as a new library service, gaming services have been part of librarianship since the nineteenth century through chess clubs. During the Great Depression, libraries supported patrons with puzzle contests and developed circulating toy and game collections. Academic libraries built game collections for research and classroom needs, while school libraries collected and facilitated educational games to aid teachers. Video games have been used in libraries to help patrons learn to use technology and to bring groups of patrons together to enjoy shared experiences. The goal of this article is to demonstrate the different ways in which libraries have used games, toys, and puzzles over the last 150 years through both collections and services. This investigation examines experiences with and perceptions of information reported by first-year college students whose level of information literacy skill is known. Participants were identified as having either proficient or below-proficient information literacy skills based on an objective test of their abilities. Interviews were performed outside of a classroom or library context and were equally interested in imposed (school assignments) and self-generated (personal) information seeking. The study uses a phenomenographic approach to collect, categorize, and analyze transcripts from seventy-seven interviews. The resulting categories of description illustrate how conceptions of information mask and minimize the need for individuals to attain information literacy skills, the primacy of the Internet and people as information resources, limited interest in information quality, and differences in experience with and perceptions of information when imposed and self-generated contexts are compared. A brief overview of the challenges associated with demonstrating organizational effectiveness and the role of performance measures as surrogates for demonstrating effectiveness are provided. The complexity of analysis and the importance of use of performance measures provide a way to review the strengths and weakness of eight different ways to utilize performance measures. Among the topics to be addressed are dashboards, process improvement initiatives, self-assessment award frameworks, and integrated management frameworks including the Balanced Score-card. Purposeful assessment of space for the understanding and improvement of the academic library is a relatively new area of inquiry. This essay offers a framework to consider different factors affecting such an assessment and insights for undertaking a meaningful inquiry about the relationship of space to an academic library's evolving purpose as accumulator, service provider, and collaborative partner in learning and knowledge creation. The purpose of the assessment will vary according to the perspective of the library under examination. Paths for approaching such assessment include consideration of the assessment's purpose, types of questions posed by it, data-gathering methodologies, and reporting strategies of results. These paths are useful to gain insights into the evolving role of the library and its contribution to the academic enterprise. Since the 1990s, the assessment of learning outcomes in academic libraries has accelerated rapidly, and librarians have come to recognize the necessity of articulating and assessing student learning outcomes. Initially, librarians developed tools and instruments to assess information literacy student learning outcomes. Now, academic librarians are moving to a larger scale assessment approach: the articulation and demonstration of library impact on institutions of higher education. At the University of Maryland, an interdisciplinary team of researchers from information studies, computer science, education, art, and psychology worked with seven children (ages seven to eleven) to design a new digital library for children. This partnership led to new approaches for collection development, cataloging (metadata standards), and new technologies for information access and use. The team validated the importance of working with children by analyzing the results of Weblogs, surveys, and lab user studies. This article presents a discussion of the interdisciplinary research landscape that contributes to an understanding of digital libraries for children, examines a case study on the development of the International Children's Digital Library, and discusses the implications from this research as they relate to new technology design methods with children and new directions for future digital libraries. American libraries do three things very well: (1) they make information accessible to millions of people on many subjects; (2) they provide tens of thousands of places where patrons can meet formally as clubs or groups, or informally as citizens and students utilizing a civic institution and a cultural agency; and (3) they furnish billions of reading materials to millions of patrons. For generations, the Library and Information Studies (LIS) community has devoted most of its attention to the first, but currently it is poorly positioned to undertake research on the second and third. American Studies, on the other hand, is well placed to address the second and third, but has largely overlooked American public, school, and academic libraries as subjects of study. This essay invites American Studies scholars to develop an LIS subspecialty in order to help the American library community better understand its present, so that it can more prudently plan its future. The number of journals with embargo periods in aggregated databases designed for academic libraries has increased for the simple reason that the number of available full text journals in these collections has also increased. Misconceptions surrounding embargo periods deduce that embargoes diminish access to information by withholding the current full text from journals, when in fact, embargoes increase access to information for journals that otherwise would not be available in aggregated databases. Embargoes exist for the purpose of preserving a publisher's traditional print and electronic journal subscriptions. Full text databases and e-journals are distinctly different resources. The use of embargoes may be valid in one electronic resource, but not the other. Linking capabilities provide seamless access from embargoed journals with current indexing in databases to the corresponding current full text found in a library's e-journal collection. The article presents information on a study on the patterns of collection development and management for East Asian art materials at college libraries in North America. Evaluation of collection is one of the significant functions of collection development and management. A questionnaire was distributed to academic libraries with East Asian collections in 1984. Data is provided for the results of the study including percentages of institutions that collect such art materials.

The ArtFrame Project, a part of the Linked Data for Production (LD4P) collaboration, was a domain-specific, linked-open-data (LOD) initiative that explored the metadata practices of art libraries and museums. The project, headed by Columbia University Libraries and including major art institutions and the Cataloging Advisory Committee (CAC) of the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA), focused on developing an extension to the Bibliographic Framework Initiative (BIBFRAME) tailored to the needs of art catalogers. This article describes the history of the project and its collaboration with the LD4P Rare Materials Extension Group to produce a shared ontology, the Art & Rare Materials BIBFRAME Ontology Extension (ARM). Assessing copyright varies from institution to institution along with the specific workflow and end-user notices. This article looks at tools used in art libraries in a range of contexts along with pragmatic perspectives on copyright evaluation from a museum art library, a public research library, a university copyright advisory office, and a public university. Pain points for determining copyright presented by various formats, ownership issues, and digitization are addressed through cases encountered by the authors. Helpful tools and workflow strategies for moving forward, including widely available charts and resources, as well as software for copyright determination, are shared. Finally, the authors describe how different institutions are handling rights metadata. The role of the subject liaison in academic libraries is evolving from reactive to pro-active. Curriculum, departmental, and faculty profile mapping are tools that liaisons use to gain a better understanding of the needs of their academic departments. The Louisiana State University Research and Instruction Services department modified the University of Central Florida Libraries' mapping charts as part of its own liaison training process. These mapping tools were useful as a starting point for text-based disciplines but were inadequate when applied to the College of Art and Design. The author discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the tools, with particular attention paid to the faculty profile map's limitations in charting studio arts faculty research and creative output. There has been a resurgence of the do-it-yourself movement in the twenty-first century. As a result, libraries are becoming laboratories in which students learn to think, explore, and meet other like-minded individuals outside the classroom. Although makerspaces in public libraries have received much attention, many academic, museum, and special libraries are seeing the benefits as well. Makerspaces provide opportunities for self-driven hands-on learning that encourages creative thinking and builds problem-solving skills. This article describes the benefits of makerspaces for art libraries, highlights art libraries where "making" is happening, and provides practical examples of ways libraries can create high-impact low-cost makerspaces that engage and educate their communities. Art in public spaces has a long, rich history. The Art in the Library collection at the University of Wyoming Libraries is a manifestation of the desire to enhance communal space and engage with the active local arts community. Since 2003, this collection has grown through changing spaces, digitization, and metadata enrichment to become a gem in the physical and digital landscapes of the libraries. This article shares the process of the Art in the Library project including its inception and history, stages of development, continued maintenance, and some lessons learned. Developing the collection created an opportunity for interdepartmental enrichment of the library and university communities, and its continuing support of relationships across campus more than justifies the time and work invested in it.
