New information about George Washington's last will and testament and three periods in its history is presented, based on close study of the object, primary sources, site visits, interviews, and recent historical literature. The will's early and Civil War histories are described, clarifying fact and legend. A 1910 preservation treatment by William Berwick, who set the standard for treating American manuscripts and documents from the late nineteenth through the early twentieth century, is discussed in comparison to the object's recent conservation to show how current conservation standards are linked to early methods.
