This essay explores the material imperatives of nineteenth-century statistical ambition, at a time when the nature of paper itself underwent rapid change. It expands the concept of paper technologies to include knowledge about the materials themselves, as well as the infrastructures, techniques, and agreements that made it possible for the right kind of paper to be made available for particular purposes. Taking the production of the forms for the Prussian census as a case in point, it argues that the enumeration effort of Prussian census statisticians went far beyond designing a form, collecting information, noting and compiling figures, or creating tables. In response to Andrew Benjamin Bricker's demonstration of the usefulness of printers' ornaments in the identification of the pseudonymous "A. Moore," this note suggests that printers' waste is another method. The Trade Sale Catalogues in the John Johnson Collection in the Bodleian Library show that booksellers preserved printed waste sheets of their own publications. There is no evidence that they retained such sheets of the publications of others. This strongly suggests that possession of waste is an indication of responsibility for publication. Da Rold likewise addresses the preference for parchment among the Italian humanists, who used paper as a disposable surface suitable for copying texts I in situ i , ultimately to be committed to parchment. This article looks at the first editions of Thomas Jefferson's (1829) and James Madison's papers (1840). Both editions exhibit some peculiar features regarding content and structure. This article argues that the selection and editing of materials for these editions have to be seen in the context of Jefferson and Madison's combined efforts to provide an interpretation of the American founding from their (Republican) perspective. For example, the dates covered by the material in Madison's edition nicely complement the dates covered by the material of Jefferson's historical writings as left by him at the time of his death. Taken together, the two friends' documentary editions crafted a history of the United States' founding that, Madison and Jefferson hoped, would combat the mostly Federalist accounts of the era published in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and would thus help to preserve the "republican experiment" in the United States. Recycling programs have significantly reduced the amount of waste sent to landfills, but recycling contamination rates have risen, reducing the environmental benefit of recycling collection. In this work, we investigate the prevalence of food-stained recyclable material contaminating recycling by evaluating disposal decisions of food-stained paper items. Consumers are more likely to contaminate recycling with food-stained items that have a low (vs. high) degree of dirtiness. We argue that consumers may dispose food-stained paper items into recycling out of a desire to avoid the anticipated negative feelings of not recycling. Consistent with this argument, we demonstrate that consumers with higher environmental values are less influenced by the degree of dirtiness of food-stained paper items and feel more negatively about not recycling food-stained paper items. We further demonstrate that disposal informational campaigns can reduce recycling contamination and increase composting by changing how consumers feel about recycling food-stained paper items. Abstract Analyses of the Soviet Bloc's environmental record have often characterized it as "dirty." While it is true that the Soviet Union and its Eastern European allies committed terrible ecological crimes while pursuing extensive and rapid economic growth, Eastern European states also developed and employed complex systems to repair, reuse, and recycle resources. This article traces the gradual change in the professional and political discussions of postindustrial and postconsumer paper recycling in Hungary as recycling transitioned from a technological fix for material shortages into an ideological tool intended to underscore socialism's theoretical supremacy over capitalism, without actually delivering on that promise. It explores how Mary and Sarah Leigh and their cousin Maria Leigh used their commonplace books as archives of shared intimacy. The strategies the Leigh sisters used to encode embodied data include linking immaterial ideas with the materiality of the notebook and paratext that teaches how to read the verse in the context of the sisters' lived experience.

Business enterprises owned by provinces were found to produce about 23% less than municipality-owned and collectively-owned ones. Richard Allen invented a paper wheel in 1896 and this was used by George Pullman in the manufacture of passenger cars. Allen's paper wheel consisted of a compressed laminated paper core and an iron hub. Pullman Palace Car Company used Allen's wheel in their luxury dining and sleeping cars, as it helped to reduce sound and vibrations from the rails. However, paper wheel's popularity was short-lived as it was unable to support the heavier cars that were introduced in the early 20th century. Allen's wheel represents the spirit of the 19th century when advances in papermaking technology led to new innovations which were readily adopted by manufacturers' in their quest for higher profits.
