The historiographic emphasis upon Faith and Edward Deming Andrews in the early twentieth-century rediscovery and promotion of Shaker material culture has undervalued the importance of the Index of American Design. Ruth Reeves, Holger Cahill, and their colleagues within this New Deal government agency were equally influential during the 1930s in selecting key objects that would comprise the sect's canons of furniture and architecture. By excluding ornamental furnishings and fancywork that diverged from the standard of simplicity, the Index conflated Shaker design with modernism and nationalism and continues to inform how Americans view the group to this day.
