This thesis explores why the Chinese government allows Hui Muslims comparatively broad discretion in their religious practice, despite the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) distrust of religion. In order to reveal the preferential treatment secured by Hui Muslims, particularly in comparison with their Uyghur compatriots, I illustrate the CCP’s ability to use and control Hui Islam for its own benefit, namely to strengthen Muslim support for the CCP. The primary reason for the Chinese government to allow Hui Muslims greater freedom of practice is the successful and ongoing Sinicization of Hui Muslims and the corresponding otherization of Uyghur culture and religious practice as dangerous and foreign. What role does the Islamic Association of China (IAC) play in shaping statist interpretations of religion? I answer this question by looking at the development of a religious bureaucracy in China. My main focus is on the IAC as a significant actor. Located between the Chinese state and Muslim communities, the IAC plays a vital role in securitizing “non-compliant” Islamic practices. My study explores the CCP’s definition of “Chinese Muslims” and “lawful Islam” as well as the centrality of the IAC for these processes of meaning-making, otherization and securitization. The introduction of gendered third person pronouns in written Chinese in the late 1910s has been hailed as one of the seismic linguistic shifts of May Fourth (1919), a period which was rife with debates on the position of women and men in Chinese society. While research on the topic has mainly framed this event as being about linguistic progress and about “her,” little attention has been paid to the specific ways in which the new pronouns were vocally opposed, quietly subverted, or leveraged by writers of the period and how this affected gender representation in literary texts, especially at a time when literature was deemed the foremost tool for the unification of the language and the education of the people.Rather than focusing on “the invention” of a third person feminine as customary of existing scholarship, my dissertation aims to retrieve the diversity of literary uses of linguistic gender that often went hand in hand with political goals. As the introduction of a new feminine pronoun ushered in the formerly gender-inclusive third-person pronoun being rewritten as masculine, I scrutinize the works of four writers representative of both early adopters and outspoken opponents of the new pronouns: Liu Dabai 劉大白 (1880-1932), Ling Shuhua 凌叔華 (1900-1990), Zhao Yuanren 趙元任 (1892-1982), and Xiao Hong 蕭紅 (1911-1942). Together, they exemplify different generations of writers working with a variety of genres (prose, poetry, drama, translation) and a variety of linguistic and social movements. This corpus allows to uncover not only how each of them plays with linguistic and gendered norms prevalent at the time (through homophony, creation of characters, deictic shifts, etc.), but also how genre itself impacted pronominal manipulations. These debates are contextualised against an historicization of “pronouns” as a linguistic category which came to be understood as open-ended and “lacking” gender over the course of the nineteenth century. Ce travail aborde la place de la littérature française en Chine en retraçant les parcours de traduction des romans français contemporains. Ce processus de traduction s’est vu transformé à partir de la fin 1992, lorsque la Chine a adhéré aux conventions internationales des droits d’auteur. Inspirée par l’approche sociologique de la traduction, cette thèse adopte les outils conceptuels de Pierre Bourdieu et propose une étude sur la base d’une recherche de terrain et de l’analyse quantitative des statistiques de première main. Il s’agit ainsi d’identifier les agents de la traduction d’œuvres romanesques françaises en Chine à travers un mécanisme façonné par la structure sociale, et de chercher à comprendre qui traduit et quoi dans ce processus conditionné. À travers une première partie qui retrace l’histoire de la traduction littéraire en Chine avec les outils bourdieusiens, nous constatons que peu importe qui domine la traduction – les écrivains, les traducteurs, l’État ou les académiques – la littérature traduite du français véhicule habituellement un riche capital symbolique en Chine. Nous argumentons dans une deuxième partie que l’introduction de la logique du marché depuis 1993 a refaçonné le rapport de force entre les différents agents, et a poussé l’éditeur à jouer un rôle relativement décisif – même si toujours sous contrôle de l’État. Par conséquent, la production commerciale est largement renforcée. Dans ce paysage, la situation des romans français semble en décalage. Nous dévoilons dans la troisième partie que sur le plan du processus, elle mobilise surtout des agents formés par le champ académique et qui ont pour vocation de se lancer plutôt dans la littérature de production restreinte que dans la littérature de grande production, comme l’étude du catalogue de l’éditeur le plus actif du domaine (Shanghai 99) en témoigne. Le panorama des auteurs contemporains traduits présenté dans la quatrième partie relativise la présomption que les œuvres françaises tradu, This work addresses the place of French literature in China by tracing the translation routes of contemporary French novels. The translation process was transformed at the end of 1992, when China signed two important international conventions of copyright. Inspired by the sociological approach of Translation Studies, this thesis adopts the conceptual tools of Pierre Bourdieu and proposes a study based on field research and quantitative analysis of first-hand statistics. The goal is thus to illustrate the translation mechanism shaped by the social structure, to identify the agents and to understand who translates what in this conditioned process. In the first section which traces the history of literary translation in China with Bourdieu's tools, we note that no matter who dominates the translation - writers, translators, the State or academics - the French literature conveys usually a rich symbolic capital in China. We argue in the second part that the introduction of a market economy in 1993 has reshaped the power relation between the various agents, and pushed the editors and publishers to play a relatively decisive role - even if still under state control. Therefore, commercial production is greatly enhanced. In this landscape, the situation of French novels seems out of step. We reveal in the third part that in terms of working process, French novels mobilize special agents trained by the academic field whose vocation lies in the literature of small-scale production rather than the large-scale production, and this observation is testified by analyzing the catalog of the most active publisher in the field (Shanghai 99). The fourth part presents a panorama of contemporary French authors who’s been translated, and realizes the presumption that French translated works are concentrated in the restricted pole: French bestsellers are also translated, but they do not sell well in China. The argument goes that, as living standards rise, the demand for better environmental management increases and a liberal political system is best placed to deal with such issues. In contrast to the dominant discussions of environmentalism, which concentrates on the relationship between democracy and environmentalism, this thesis suggests that environmental protection can become a playground for authoritarian regimes to pursue ulterior motives and goals. Using the concept of environmental authoritarianism, the following research assesses the resilience capacity of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) despite the gravity of its environmental crisis and mounting citizen grievances. An ethnographic methodology composed of different methods is employed to undertake the investigation including participant observation, field notes, interviews and document analysis. The implementation of cooperation and legitimation strategies are investigated at an urban city level in the field of environmental sustainability. Broadly, the thesis argues that the environmental governance capacity of the CCP has been developed around three ideas: (1) (re)centralise environmental governance efforts; (2) create a consensus around environmental protection (e.g. ‘ecological civilisation’); and (3) institutionalise grassroots movements. Using actor-network-theory as a method of analysis, I explore how these processes occur in practice at a local level through two case studies: a registered NGO working on waste reduction and a social enterprise aimed at strengthening rural communities and promoting sustainable agriculture. The thesis findings indicate that there has been a shift from fragmentation to a consolidation resulting in less room for contentious participation. The instrumentalisation of environmental issues by the government prevent environmental activists to resist co-optation by the government machinery. Sommes-nous entrés dans l’ère du plastique ?L’Anthropocène est-il un Plasticocène ?Les enjeux écologiques contemporains nous invitent à porter un regard critique et sensible sur les matières plastiques de synthèse qui ont progressivement investi notre vie quotidienne durant le XXème siècle. Depuis la fin des années 1980, la République Socialiste du Viêt Nam s’est ouverte au commerce international et a adopté un modèle de production et de consommation de masse. Suivre les plastiques nous permet de raconter l’histoire de ce « Renouveau » vietnamien (Đổi mới), une transformation accélérée du régime autoritaire autant que de la vie ordinaire dans les petites et grandes villes du pays. Cette thèse questionne le devenir déchet de ces matières issues de l’extraction des hydrocarbures et leur rapport avec les humains, dans un contexte d’emballement plastique. Elle est constituée d’une série de six plasti-cités, qui sont à la fois des lieux physiques – petites villes et métropoles – et des communautés politiques hybrides. Dans la cité, les humains ne sont jamais seuls. Observer les matières, les choses, les êtres, autrement dit, les non-humains, permet de réfléchir aux principes structurant la vie en commun. Ces plasti-cités sont également des écritures :elles proposent de rendre compte textuellement et plastiquement d’enquêtes de terrain menées au Viêt Nam depuis 2011. À partir de l’année 1979, une combinaison complexe s’est peu à peu formée entre d’une part ce qu’on appelle l'art contemporain occidental, et d’autre part l'environnement ancien de l'art chinois traditionnel, engendrant l'art contemporain chinois tel qu’il s’est construit jusqu’à nos jours. Au cours des différentes phases de ce processus, la réutilisation d’éléments traditionnels de l'art chinois dans des œuvres d'art contemporain a représenté une composante importante qui non seulement ne peut être ignorée, mais constitue l’une des forces structurante de la création artistique contemporaine chinoise.Pour cette thèse, c’est depuis un point de vue d’artiste, celui de l’auteur, qu’ont été menées quatre années de recherches, de réflexion et d’attention sur ces thèmes de la persistance et de la résurgence, dans la création contemporaine chinoise, d’éléments caractéristiques provenant du passé. The object of this thesis is to analyse the politics involved in low-carbon transformations from the point of view of the exercise of state power in the economy. It starts from the premise that large-scale socio-technical transformations such as that required by the overhaul of energy systems based on the burning of fossil fuels involve confrontations of interests and ideologies, and therefore are contentious and political. The objective of the thesis is to analyse how this political challenge has unfolded in China, which is relevant not only because of its global environmental impact, but also because its industrialisation experience invites a reflection on the way in which these issues have been analysed in the West. Thus, the thesis explores how, in China, the necessity to address environmental issues has transformed the way in which the state exercises its power over the economy, particularly over the electric power system. The research involves a longitudinal analysis of the political transformation of China’s state institutions from the 1980s to 2015, as well as two case studies in the field of low-carbon policy: the promotion of renewable energy and the implementation of administrative pollution targets in the electric power sector. The focus on the production of electric power stems from both its centrality to China’s low-carbon transformation and the particular position of the electric power industry in the market reforms. The key findings of this research are twofold. Firstly, the CPC absorbed environmental claims in its developmental doctrine, which validated the resort to authoritarian interventions in the economy and society, and by the same token also increased the resistance to them, undermining the construction of a rule-based state power. This research critically unpacks existing international norm diffusion and domestication theories and amends them, focusing on resistance, agency, and the pivotal role of domestic agents. It argues that domestic agency is marginalized by current theories of international norm diffusion and that current models place undue emphasis on the power of ‘critical States’, which are invariably Western. It is implied, though often explicitly stated, that international norms are created in and spread by Western States. This research argues that while this may be the case, the application of the same limited models create such a situation which hinders instead of helps the understanding of norm diffusion. Arguing that domestic agency is marginalized by current theories of international norm diffusion, this study investigated the SRHR norm in the Philippines as a case study to examine the limitations of current models and the benefits of introducing a local agency approach. This research is divided into two sections: the national and the sub-national, to provide a broad-lens perspective on the specific case of Sexual Health and Reproductive Rights (SRHR) in the Philippines using the framework of norm diffusion. Empiric research was conducted on two levels of analysis: first, a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of the national-level Congressional deliberations and debates on SRHR from the period of the 8th Congress to the 15th Congress; and second, a micro-comparative analysis of three selected municipalities, namely Manila, Cebu, and Davao, involving a case-study based process-tracing methodology of the local diffusion of the SRHR norm(s).The theoretical critique and empirical case study proved that there are indeed limitations present within current diffusion conventions and furthermore, that local agency is a powerful and understudied tool in norm diffusion., Doctorat en Sciences politiques et sociales, info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Depuis maintenant près de trois décennies, les parcs des villes chinoise constituent des lieux de rassemblement pour les retraités qui, collectivement, s'adonnent à diverses activités :taiji quan, chorales de « chant rouge », danses, opéra de Pékin, traditionnel et révolutionnaire, pratique collective d'instruments de musique, récitation. Appartenant aux générations qui ont grandi durant la période maoïste, ces individus ont en commun d'avoir vécu la Révolution culturelle (1966-1976) et le passage à la Réforme (1978), avec les transformations qui en ont découlé. A partir d'une ethnographie conduite dans les parcs de Pékin entre 2011 et 2014, cette thèse analyse ces formes de présence en public qui prennent souvent la forme de performances culturelles. A travers des descriptions fines des situations observées, elle montre que les rassemblements dans les parcs peuvent être vus comme des espaces-temps interstitiels, des événements publics à la fois distincts du quotidien et ancrés dans celui-ci, faisant la part belle à des comportements théâtraux, parfois excentriques. Si ces modes de surexposition de soi en public s'inscrivent dans la continuité d'une « politique de la présence », caractéristique de l'époque maoïste, ils font aussi l'objet d'une réappropriation à d'autres fins, dans d'autres espaces-temps. Cette question des transformations du cadre de la performance publique et, par conséquent, de l'expérience que celui-ci implique, figure au centre de ma réflexion. La possibilité de « s'amuser » en prenant part à des activités qui, pour certaines, sont structurées autour de l'expression de messages politiques ne constitue pas seulement un attrait important de ces situations pour les habitués des parcs, elle peut être vue comme un accomplissement. Cette thèse contribue notamment aux travaux portants sur l'appropriation des espaces publics urbains, mais aussi à l'anthropologie de la performance et aux études sur la nostalgie post-communiste.
