Since the concept of “literary evolution” proposed by Yuri Tynyanov could not be applied to the late Soviet official literature, Sergei Averintsev using this concept examined the relationship between philosophy, sophistry, rhetorics and everyday consciousness in classical Greece. Tynyanov's theory of “parallel series” turned out to be productive for the reconstruction of the tasks of the ancient philosopher and for the interpretation of Plato's dialogues. According Averintsev, Plato acted within the sophistic field, creating irreducible terminology and untranslatable phrases as a moment of the entire further evolution of Western literature. Consideration of Russian formalism as the context of Averintsev's thought proves his contribution to the discussion of Platonism as a tool for posing philosophical problems and of the perspective of philosophy in the postcolonial discussion.

The essay examines some contributions published by the poet Durs Grünbein on the occasion of the seventh centenary of Dante's death. Particular attention is paid to the tercet of Paradiso XXXIII, 94-96, whose meaning and translation engage the German poet since at least 2009. On the basis of the terminology used by Grünbein to describe his transpositions of Dante’s verses in terms of rendering, the essay investigates the influence of Dante in the author's poetics in the light of the global-digital era starting from the contributions of 2021 and going back to the sources of poetic inspiration, where Grünbein rereads Dante with Descartes and Mandelstam., Il saggio esamina alcuni contributi pubblicati dal poeta Durs Grünbein in occasione del settimo centenario della morte di Dante. Particolare attenzione viene dedicata alla terzina di Paradiso XXXIII, vv. 94-96 che impegna il poeta tedesco almeno dal 2009. In base alla terminologia impiegata da Grünbein per descrivere le sue trasposizioni dantesche in termini di rendering, il saggio indaga l’influenza del Sommo Fiorentino nella poetica dell’autore di Dresda alla luce dell’era globale-digitale per risalire alle fonti dell’ispirazione poetica, dove Grünbein rilegge Dante con Cartesio e Mandel’štàm.

Fascist culture is often associated with an anti-modernist attitude. Actually, as this article aims at demonstrating, modernist topics constantly cross far right-wing culture in Italy, as well as in France and in Germany. With respect to the by now canonical book of Roger Griffin (Modernism and Fascism, 2007), this article does not analyze the myth of the ethnic-national ‘regeneration’ (myth that, I believe, is present also in fascist anti-modernist perspectives), but it focuses in particular on the cultural glorification of industry and technology, and then on the reconciliation of art with the industrial scenario. Through a wide recon of the French, German, and Italian cultural milieu, this article offers to the reader a first mapping concerning the complex relation between modernism and fascist culture., La cultura fascista è spesso associata con un’attitudine anti-modernista. In realtà, come questo articolo intende dimostrare, tematiche moderniste attraversano costantemente la cultura di estrema destra in Italia come in Francia e in Germania. Diversamente dal libro ormai canonico di Roger Griffin (Modernism and Fascism, 2007), questo articolo non analizza il mito della ‘rigenerazione’ etnico-nazionale (mito che, sostengo, è presente anche nelle prospettive anti-moderniste), ma focalizza in particolare sulla glorificazione culturale dell’industria e della tecnica, e poi sulla riconciliazione dell’arte con lo scenario industriale. Attraverso un’ampia ricognizione del milieu culturale francese, tedesco e italiano, l’articolo presenta al lettore una prima mappatura concernente la complessa relazione fra modernismo e cultura fascista.

The article analyzes the novel of the modern Russian writer A. Potyomkin Man is canceled (2007), which received a wide public response. The main idea of the work is the need for a radical change of the “mass man” of the turn of the XX-XXI centuries at the psychosomatic level. The ideological and compositional center is the specially built Rimushkino estate in the Oryol province, where the serf spirit of the Russian Empire at the turn of the XVIII-XIX centuries is reproduced. To answer the question of why the estate space of Russia is becoming the most representative field for anthropological experiments of the beginning of the XXI century, we consider the estate neo-myths of the Silver Age (the lost paradise on earth) and the Soviet period (the camp hell living in the mentality), as well as the imperial-colonial concept of the postmodern era (the estate as a frontier in the process of class-oriented internal colonization of the country). The multidimensional semiotics of the estate sets a new relationship between “metropolitan” and “provincial” concerning the other loci of the novel.

The Symphonic Harmonies are a composite project probably prepared by G. P. Lucini between 1885 and 1888 of which only two poems were published in 1892, those ones that show Lucini’s first verslibrist attempt. These two poems mark the beginning of an experimentation that will be typical of the symbolist and ‘futurist’ poetry of Lucini, who rightfully will be later considered as the inventor of the free verse in Italy, thanks to a revival accomplished by the Italian neo-avant-gardists of the 60’s. Some other parties of his early project, which remained unpublished during his lifetime, show his interests in cabalism. Without underestimating the contributions of the 70’s on this subject, we will propose its possible sources and a more profound esoteric interpretation of these writings, which will also be considered in relation to Lucini’s concurrent and future production., Les harmonies symphoniques sont un projet composite, apparemment rédigé par Lucini entre 1885 et 1888, dont seulement deux poèmes ont été publiés en 1892, ceux-là mêmes qui témoignent du premier emploi vers-libriste chez Lucini. Si ces deux poèmes marquent le début d’une expérimentation qui sera propre de la poésie symboliste et ‘futuriste’ de Lucini, plus tard considéré à bon escient comme l’inventeur du vers libre en Italie grâce à sa redécouverte par les néo-avant-gardistes italiens des années 1960, d’autres parties de ce projet de jeunesse restées inédites de son vivant montrent ses intérêts en matière de cabalisme. Sans sous-estimer les apports des années 1970 sur ce sujet, nous proposerons des sources possibles et une interprétation ésotérique plus approfondie de ces écrits, qui seront aussi envisagés par rapport à la production concomitante et future de Lucini.

L’articolo intende partire dal concetto di automatismo insito nel luogo comune, inteso nella sua accezione più ampia, per enucleare alcuni punti fondamentali della riflessione di Jean Paulhan, direttore della NRF negli anni centrali del Novecento, anche alla luce del contributo di Henri Meschonnic in relazione al proverbio in quanto atto linguistico caratterizzato da ri-enunciabilità. Le considerazioni sul ritmo che ne conseguono, già sfruttate dalle sperimentazioni linguistiche di Paulhan e da dadaisti e surrealisti, vanno nella direzione di riscoprire il côté intersoggettivo che, quale fonte nascosta alla base del luogo comune, permette anche di mettere in discussione e rivitalizzare i cliché stessi. Rielaborazione che funziona da specola nei confronti dei pregiudizi e degli automatismi nascosti nel linguaggio. Verranno così evidenziati i punti di contatto tra la fonte nascosta che sostanzia il luogo comune, il défigement operato da Robert Desnos e le tele di Edward Hopper., The article begins with the inherent automatism of the use of common sayings in a wider interpretation in order to clarify some of the most fundamental points of reflexion of Jean Paulhan who was director of the NRF in the middle years of the twentieth century. Furthermore, Henri Meschonnic’s contribution will be taken into account. The following remarks on rhythm which have already been used by Paulhan as well as Dadaists and surrealists lead us to the rediscovery of the intersubjective aspect which, as hidden sources of the base of common sayings, allow us to discuss and revitalize those clichés. This reworking gives the possibility to observe the prejudices and the hidden automatisms in language. The various points which link the hidden source from which common sayings originate, the défigement belonging to the poet Robert Desnos and the canvasses painted by Edward Hopper, will come to light.

L’articolo propone una riflessione intorno alla categoria di transnazionalismo, di derivazione storica e sociologica, al fine di coglierne le opportunità di impiego nel campo della teoria della comparatistica letteraria. In particolare, sono chiamati in causa alcuni temi centrali della storia della disciplina, quali la letteratura mondiale e il canone, i quali alla luce della dimensione transnazionale – da non confondere con quella internazionale – si aprono a nuove declinazioni e ai mutati panorami letterari della contemporaneità.

“The Imagined Province” investigates the shifts in what the “idea of the province” in the period of world war and the Russian revolution and civil war. I argue that the mental and emotional valence of Russia’s map changed markedly over these nine years as regionalist and provincial pride came into literary culture, urging a fresh view of central Russia outside the capital cities. This change of perspective emerges in essays, stories, and poetry throughout Central Russia, though this article focuses mainly on the Volga Region. Authors of many different political stripes contributed to this shift—among them, regionalists like Evgenii Chirikov and Nikolai Kliuev, pro-revolutionary socialists such as Maksim Gor’kii and Matvei Dudorov, and Bolsheviks like Aleksei Dorogoichenko and Fedor Bogorodskii. As the Bolsheviks regathered Russia, these provincial voices were overpowered by more prominent voices from the center. Nonetheless, they established a “usable history” that remains a substrate of Russian culture even today, challenging the simplistic binary juxtaposing “capital” and “province.”

What did a Russian peasant’s ‘mental map’ look like between 1917 and the consolidation of the Soviet order in 1934? To what extent does a specific province or oblast have a place on this map? Was ‘provincial Russia’ how peasants thought about the vast non-urban territory in transition? Provincial identity is an elusive category during any period – it was not the mental or physical space in which peasants lived. They resided in a village, were members of a parish encompassing several neighboring communities, and had contact with larger geographical units when they bought and sold goods, left for work in towns or cities, or were called up for military service. The fact that provincial identity is difficult to quantify does not make it insignificant, and, with the help of rural literature and oral histories, this paper will track provincial and regional ties among peasants for this period.

The vibrant bodies of the improvisers represented a phenomenon of marked intermediality between the Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries, loaded with extended cultural values ​​that have been enhanced by recent multidisciplinary research. Rethinked as living documents, as places that is of a performance that is staged of itself in the forms of a continuous dialogue with the public, with tradition, with social conventions, with genres, those inviolate bodies have not yet stopped talking, alongside their timeless eloquence. This article aims to analyse some aspects of the body-voice of the improvvisatrici through literary and iconographic documentary sources, starting, in particular, from some famous portraits made by Angelica Kauffmann to arrive at the celebratory statuary and the memory transmitted by the chronicles of the shows, from the reviews, from the egodocuments, in order to highlight the construction of a public identity inside and outside the scenes., Incandescenti e apodittici, i corpi delle improvvisatrici hanno rappresentato un fenomeno di spiccata intermedialità tra Sette e Ottocento, caricandosi di valori culturali estesi che sono stati valorizzati dalle recenti ricerche multidisciplinari. Ripensati come documenti viventi, come luoghi cioè di una performance che è messa in scena di sé nelle forme di un dialogo continuo con il pubblico, con la tradizione, con le convenzioni sociali, con i generi, quei corpi inviolati non hanno ancora smesso di parlare, di interrogarci nella loro atemporale eloquenza. Quest’intervento intende sondare alcuni aspetti del corpo-voce delle poetesse improvvisatrici attraverso fonti documentarie letterarie e iconografiche, partendo, in particolare, da alcuni celebri ritratti realizzati da Angelica Kauffmann per arrivare alla statuaria celebrativa e alla memoria trasmessa dalle cronache degli spettacoli, dalle recensioni, dagli egodocuments, al fine di mettere in luce la costruzione di un’identità pubblica dentro e fuori le scene.

This essay examines the influence of Plutarch’s Life of Brutus on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, arguing that the relationship between Brutus and his «evil genius» provides Shelley with a model for characterizing the pair of Victor Frankenstein and his Creature. By considering the broader context of Plutarch’s reception from the sixteenth through the early nineteenth centuries, and particularly the construction of Brutus as a ghost-seer, a clinical obsessive, or a revolutionary icon, the essay examines the Brutus/Victor parallel as actual and/or symbolic parricides, shedding new light on Shelley’s failed representation of the French Revolution in her novel., ENTHYMEMA, N. 27 (2021)

Nelle narrazioni contemporanee della migrazione e della diaspora, l’intersecarsi di memoria e racconto restituisce i traumi della dislocazione, facendo emergere il passato personale e collettivo. In The Last Gift (2011) di Abdulrazak Gurnah la ricostruzione memoriale avviene attraverso una struttura narrativa che privilegia il non detto, e attribuisce al silenzio, articolato in varie forme, dall’afasia al mutismo, passando attraverso l’amnesia, un ruolo centrale. Il graduale dispiegarsi della storia di Abbas viene evocato dallo scrittore attraverso un narratore onnisciente e una focalizzazione multipla, che raffigurano un microcosmo famigliare i cui segreti sono infine rivelati solo parzialmente. Il romanzo intreccia frammenti di storie, appartenenti a tempi e spazi diversi, per farle confluire in una registrazione su nastro che costituisce l’ultimo dono offerto da un padre originario di Zanzibar ai suoi figli inglesi. La questione identitaria si traduce in un racconto che ha un forte impatto emotivo e lascia ai lettori la possibilità di diverse interpretazioni., ENTHYMEMA, N. 27 (2021)

Il mesmerismo, detto anche magnetismo animale, ispirò una letteratura magnetica che riscosse grande successo in Europa (in particolar modo in Francia, Germania e Inghilterra) e negli Stati Uniti lungo tutto il corso del diciannovesimo secolo. Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815) fu il teorizzatore di quest’insieme di pratiche che costituirono un primo sistema psicoterapeutico e inaugurarono numerosi studi sull’ipnotismo. In ambito italiano, il primo scrittore a rappresentare l’immaginario mesmerico nelle proprie opere letterarie fu Giacomo Leopardi. In questo articolo si analizzeranno diverse opere del poeta recanatese e si proporrà, in particolare, una lettura del ‘Dialogo di Torquato Tasso e del suo Genio familiare’ attraverso le lenti del mesmerismo., ENTHYMEMA, N. 27 (2021)

Lo scopo del saggio è proporre un’interpretazione di due opere di Joseph von Eichendorff: Ahnung und Gegenwart (1815) e Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts (1826). La concezione della letteratura elaborata da Francesco Orlando è utilizzata per mostrare come in questi testi il fenomeno dell’anticapitalismo romantico trovi espressione nel ritorno di contenuti repressi incarnati dai due protagonisti dei testi in esame: Friedrich, un cavaliere medievaleggiante, ed un fannullone ribelle al principio di prestazione. Entrambe le figure vivono l’esperienza di una Bildung, che, in Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts, tuttavia, si configura come un percorso di individuazione scandito dalla comparsa di immagini archetipiche e perciò ricostruibile tramite alcune categorie attinte dalla psicologia analitica. La psicoanalisi freudiana e la psicologia analitica di Jung sono impiegate, perciò, per mettere a fuoco, rispettivamente, la fisionomia antimoderna di tali personaggi e le caratteristiche che differenziano il Bildungsweg del Taugenichts dal processo di sviluppo interiore di Friedrich. Opera ibrida e composita, sapientemente costruita a partire da una elaborata commistione dei generi e dei codici narrativi, Althénopis è un romanzo che si approssima come resa poetica e formale all’autofiction, di cui condivide alcune determinanti caratteristiche, come l’indeterminatezza identitaria del narratore e l’intento di andare sempre oltre il dato puramente fattuale e autobiografico. Il saggio si propone di esplorare le modalità espressive, le strategie stilistiche e al contempo il portato simbolico e valoriale attraverso cui la scrittura della Ramondino cessa di essere mera rievocazione anamnestica di un vissuto personale per divenire invece atto di comprensione analitica e di ricognizione epistemologica, strumento privilegiato di decostruzione e ricerca di una versione altra del proprio sé, all’interno di un percorso di auto-riconoscimento e auto-individuazione esperibile in virtù del doppio processo di rifigurazione e rimemorazione messo in atto tramite il dispositivo romanzesco., ENTHYMEMA, N. 27 (2021)
