This paper critically surveys and contextualises the recent wave of autonomous art schools established in the UK since the Independent Review of Higher Education Funding & Student Finance, or Browne Review. It argues that these institutions have been formed as a direct response to this economic policy and the broader neoliberal economisation of higher education. By drawing upon the work of the Edu-Factory Collective, and the Autonomist Marxist theory that inspired their project, this paper argues that these new alternative art schools can be understood as ‘common autonomous institutions’. Furthermore, that they represent genuinely viable alternatives to the commodified, financialised, and marketised state provision. Finally, drawing upon the work of Santos, three alternative art schools (The Other MA, Southend, UK; The School of the Damned, London, UK; @.ac, UK) are analysed as nascent forms of the polyphonic pluriversity.

University dropout is a major problem in Latin America and the Caribbean; in Colombia, around 50% of students who enter university complete their studies. This phenomenon is multi-causal; therefore, it is necessary to perform an analysis in different scenarios, in order to create strategies that help permanence and graduation. This paper presents an alternative to identify some factors that lead a student to drop out of the Universidad del Cauca, based on data science methodologies. It was found that desertion is influenced by academic factors, such as areas of knowledge, semester and average, social context such as stratum and place of origin, and individual factors such as age and gender.

The insights shared in this paper are based on research conducted in Greece and Brazil It is centered around the exploration of activist knowledge as a distinct form of knowledge. In doing this, it discusses the role of reflection in acquiring critical consciousness as well as the unified and holistic character of activist knowledge. This unity entails the intertwining of action with reflection and action with theory. It shows how critique forms a key feature of activist knowledge and highlights some nuances, tensions and contradictions inherent in the knowledge production of this kind. The latter is shown to be underpinned by plural dialogical processes, which further challenge and enrich knowledge produced in social movements. The paper aims to feedback insights from theory into praxis and vice versa. To achieve its aims, it approaches learning as an ongoing part of the quest for meaning and the quest of meaning as an integral part of acting.

The objective of this paper is to affirm the potential of art as a means for academic research capable of propitiating broad modes of thinking and of action, conceiving creation and experience as central elements of the investigative process. The paper revisits the work of some authors of the methodology known as Arts-Based Research, emphasizing the contribution of the challenges raised by Jan Jagodzinski and Jason Wallin. It understands research with art as a dispositif for ontological actions: the composition of an aesthetic of the existence (Foucault) and of a become-art (Deleuze). The paper presents the strength of the poetic act to make possible an enlarged conception of research, an education as educere and a humanity to come.

This paper proposes a reflection on the different ways of reading and knowing based on comparisons between different means of expression and reading. Taking studies on reading as well as modes of subjective entanglement of different times and contrasting them to some modern and contemporary scholars and writers, the paper focuses on discussing the boundary between the sensible world and its representation, in order to contribute to a more critical appropriation of media resources by the educational system. The main argument poses itself from the premise that, in face of the concealment of reality by contemporary media, it is more than ever the task of education to preserve the possibilities to learn and to grasp from the discomforts of the real.

This paper pursues understanding recent changes in the romantic and sexual relations of young people. Its perspective focuses on the emancipation of women and young people since the 1880s, a moment when social codes dominating the relations between women and men, parents and their children, changed towards greater leniency. Both had to learn how to become sexual subjects as well as sexual objects and to develop a gratifying balance between the two, in trial-and-error processes involving attempts at connecting sexual and relational intimacy in subsequent spurts of sexualisation and eroticisation. The paper sketches significant moments in these processes and raises the question of where we are now.

Comparison is the essence of science and the field of comparative and international education, like many of the social sciences, has been dominated by quantitative methodological approaches. This paper raises fundamental questions about the utility of regression analysis for causal inference. It examines three extensive literatures of applied regression analysis concerned with education policies. The paper concludes that the conditions necessary for regression analysis to yield valid causal inferences are so far from ever being met or approximated that such inferences are never valid. Alternative research methodologies are then briefly discussed.

This paper explores the methodological challenges in comparing education policies in a globalizing world. It will be developed in the following ways. We begin with sketching out the contours of the changes that have taken place in the governance of education systems as a result of global processes and the challenges to presents us with regarding how we study, and compare, education policies. We do this by way of four ‘isms’ which we problematise as litmusses of global educational change. We then raise the question of comparison, and point to two conflicting ways that it can be used in studying education policy. In the final section of the paper we offer three (not exhaustive) methodological reflections - each with a different dimension through which to explore global education processes - time, space, and logics of governing in education policymaking.

This paper reports on an ethnographic multiple case study in Greece. It explores teachers’ practices regarding the education of critically thinking citizens ten years into the implementation of an integrated curriculum reform. By means of classroom observations and semi-structured interviews this research explored the role of critical thinking in the classrooms. Findings suggest that teachers refrain from practices that advance critical thinking skills and pupils’ empowerment. Instead they tend to implement traditional practices, while their work is largely determined by the standards of achievement set by University Entrance Exams and parents’ aspirations. The paper concludes that prevailing expectations in the Greek primary school interfere with the development of pedagogical relationships that would promote critical thinking obstructing the attainment of the aims of the integrated curriculum reform and compromising the project for democratic citizenship.

Drawing on the imagetic productions of children playing in the street, this paper discusses the meanings of childhood and the issues surrounding the myths of quietness and immobility of the body to learn, an idea quite present in education. By creating some connections between the images produced by children and the education of care and control, this work proposes a look at the body as power to think other ways of life and to make education with children.

This paper aims to contribute with the development of pedagogical concepts that esteems the human subjectivity as a point of integration between symbolic, emotional, historic, current, conscious, unconscious, rational and irrational aspects. The theorical perspective used in this paper as a perception filter of the subjective processes was thecultural-historic theory of subjectivity, from González Rey. A constructive-interpretative investigation was done in an online course about health matters, based in a self-pedagogy that revealed some pedagogical stances to the learner’s emergence as a subject.

This paper explores how and why pedagogues within universities can and need to work as ‘one amongst many’ to advance critical pedagogies for urban equality. The discussion draws on two contrasting experiences: the networked schools of the Habitat International Coalition in Latin America (HIC-AL) – a coalition of civil society organizations, social movements and universities working in defense of habitat-related human rights – and the co-learning processes with housing rights activists activated by the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) – a national education institution committed to the equitable, sustainable and efficient transformation of Indian settlements. Both experiences place emphasis on crafting critical pedagogies that seek to fundamentally disrupt, re-frame and re-position institutional relations of knowledges and learning practices, while advancing capacities for transformative urban change. The analysis demonstrates how epistemic injustices – often proliferated in and by higher education institutions – can be counteracted, and why fostering epistemic justice requires re-positioning universities as one amongst many in a wider ecosystem of urban pedagogies, in open and productive dialogue with new institutional forms that Boaventura de Sousa Santos defines as the ‘pluriversity’ and the ‘subversity’.

This paper analyzes the metaphor as a discursive strategy to explain and disseminate the concepts that support doctrines in general and educational doctrines in particular. It examines the Cultivation metaphor as a fundamental metaphor for education, as well as its supposed origin in Sophistry, and proposes to replace it with the Navigation metaphor. This substitution makes it possible to assign new meanings both to the practice of the sophists and to the profession of educating today and throughout history, imposing challenges on the training and continuing education of teachers.

This paper aims to describe the evolution of the financing of education in Brazil, especially of basic education (preschool-secondary education). The methodology consisted of investigating the legislation to ascertain how the legal framework incorporated this financing. The study also seeks to highlight advances and setbacks, especially regarding constitutionally earmarked tax revenue for education maintenance and development. Such earmarking began with the Constitution of 1934 and peaked with Constitutional Amendment no. 59 of 2009, which resulted in the National Education Plan in Law no. 13005/2014. One of the most visible points of the evolution is that such earmarking was suppressed under authoritarian or dictatorial regimes and maintained in democratic regimes.

This paper studies the historical relationship between education and society based on a problematic element - inclusion. The commemoration of independence in American countries is addressed to show that different forms of educational inclusion seen today must be analyzed from the perspective of the form of power that made them possible and necessary for the last two hundred years, that is, the liberal power. The concepts of biopolitics and governance are used theoretically and methodologically. It is showed that educational inclusion is not an altruistic contingency of power but a condition of possibility of its constant validity. Additionally, its inherent obligation to impose exclusion and promote inclusion is part of the current logic according to which ruling also entails letting others live and facilitating death for them.

The present paper aims to discuss a certain institutional blindness observed in a state school of the state of Rio de Janeiro while investigating the case of a Congolese refugee in Brazil. We carried out a qualitative research, of the case-study type (Yin, 2010) in which we observed a refugee student in the school where she was enrolled and interviews with educators e other social actors. Our analysis is based on the Omnilectical Perspective (Santos, 2013). The results showed that the school might have developed what we called an institutional blindness when it comes to the inclusion of refugee students despite the good intentions of the educational professionals.

This paper analyzes the effects of social class on the educational performance of young Brazilians students. Our theoretical approach in this study is based on Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of social class. We opted for a quantitative methodology using the database of the Basic Education Evaluation System (Saeb) tests carried out in 2013. We used descriptive statistics, correspondence analysis and multiple linear regression. Empirical results showed the persistence of the effects of social class on academic performance, although these results coexist with the impacts of variables related to schooling, individual life story and pedagogical aspects.

This paper presents a summarized analysis of teachers’ questions on the Education of Youths and Adults (EYA), across different areas of the Brazilian State of Rio Grande do Sul, between the years 2002 and 2004, as well as ten years later, from 2012 through 2014. This is a qualitative comparative research, with questions collected from written records and by teachers’ adherence, aiming to verify the effects of the meanings produced. The results, based especially on the Discourse Analysis by Pêcheux (1997, 1999 and 1987), point out that part of the meanings produced are updated again throughout the periods, uncovering that the discontinuities in the public policies of EYA teachers’ continuing educational training produce effects of a sense of circularity.

Not only do many little girls in the United States and elsewhere play school, but when they grow up, they sometimes become teachers, at which point the story of playing school takes on a new narrative and discursive function. Using narrative and performance theories, and discourse analysis, we analyze stories about playing school told as part of a multi-site qualitative study of new and pre-service American elementary teachers’ life histories. We examined these narratives with one eye on pop culture and mid to late 1990s girlhood, and the other on the use to which the game of playing school is put both discursively and in practice. Implications for teacher preparation and professional identity, as well as the gendered face of teachers’ work, conclude the paper.

This paper refers to the state of knowledge of scientific productions on subjects of YAE in Brazil. The research problem was: What are the main theoretical and methodological foundations present in the productions resulting from research in the field of Youth and Adult Education in Brazil that deal with student subjects? We used the following descriptors for data collection: subjects + YAE, identity +YAE, and sociability + YAE. The analysis of 13 articles showed the interdisciplinary nature of the studies, the predominance of qualitative research, and the theoretical diversity that underlies this field of investigation. Given the limited number of publications, we perceived the importance of exploring this area of research and knowledge production.

This paper analyzes the emphasis of educational policies for Youth and Adult Education (EJA), focusing on the modality in Brazilian penal units. From this movement, relationships established with research in the field that deals with the work of teachers in spaces of deprivation and restriction of freedom. The production, with a qualitative approach, is the result of bibliographic studies and documentary analysis. The reflections presented allow us to understand aspects of educational guidelines and studies in the area, articulated to the consequences for teaching work, given clashes and consensus produced in the context of neoliberal reforms.

The paper discusses the themes of education and teaching-learning processes throughout life, taking as a cutout, racial relations in the contexts of Youth and Adult Education (EJA) in Brazil, considering what determines Law 10,639/03. This is an exploratory-descriptive study, with a mixed approach that associates the analysis of indicators, bibliographic research and the document al., as well as data from two experiences in the EJA. The results reveal that the EJA because it is constituted mainly by blacks and blacks, can be understood as an affirmative action, which seeks to correct distortions and repair historical injustices. It points out as a pedagogical proposal for teaching and meaningful learning the association between afrobetization and literacies of (re) existences.

This paper discusses the relevance of ways of looking at, questioning and shedding light on what assumes the everyday life as a methodological lever of the knowledge of school reality. With this goal, it is explored the symbology of nicknames in different school contexts of Portugal and Brazil and the social circumstances which contribute to their production and circulation. It is necessary to see how names spin out meanings in the informal everyday language. The proposed methodology takes the words of everyday chatting as vehicles for understanding the underlying social relationships.

The use of valid argument does not come naturally. It is acquired only through practice. This study was accomplished to provide students intended opportunities of engaging activities for launching argumentation in primary classrooms. The focus of the paper is how argumentation was evolved when students engaged in the conjecturing incorporated into regular mathematics instruction over two consecutive years. Working with a group of 6 teachers was to develop conjecturing tasks and pedagogical strategies to support them in teaching, and then to enhance the quality of students’ argumentation when 24 students were in grades 3 and 4. The collected data mainly consisted of conjecturing tasks, audio - and video - taped recordings of classroom observations, and students’ worksheets. Results indicate that the evolution of argumentation was identified in two aspects: the characteristics and the quality of the argumentation.

Bearing in mind the context of transformations in, and of the, Higher Education and the intensification of professors’ work, this paper debates academic management in the daily routines of university professors in regard to teaching, research and extension. The discussion focuses on the experiences of 23 university professors, from Brazil and Portugal, collected through biographic interviews. Amongst the positive features of management are the possibilities to democratically participate in the university’s decision making and of a clear view on the functioning and structuring of higher education. The convergence between management with bureaucratic and administrative activities is seen as a negative feature, leading to a depreciation and discredit of management.

This paper tries to explore the implications of Will Kimlicka’s (1998; 2007; 2015) theorizing on liberal multiculturalism for educational policy in Canada and Brazil. Through exploring a series of case studies from Canada, including publically funded heritage language schools and Afrocentric programs, we try to show how liberal multiculturalism shifts the terms of educational debates away from a focus on the particular classroom practice of teachers, towards restructuring educational policy to address the unique needs of different ethno-cultural groups in society. Making ongoing links to Brazilian educational contexts, we highlight some of the unique challenges of introducing policies inspired by liberal multiculturalism in Brazil.

This paper proposes a two-step model for the inference of discourse on textual databases. The focus is on gender ideology and the action of EscolasemPartido.org and the Free Brazil Movement (Movimento Brasil Livre) on social networks, as well as the presence of the debate on the subject in the Chamber of Deputies. The first stage consists of a discourse analysis, made from the contributions of Michel Foucault and Judith Butler. The second stage consists of verifying the materiality of discourse in selected documents, using a topic modeling method based on latent Dirichlet allocation - LDA. It is concluded that the methodology allows one to infer the presence of the discourse of gender ideology on social networks, driving its reception by the parliamentary debate.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the settings and challenges of teacher education programs in Art with the developments of Law 13.278/16. These guidelines require Music, Dance, Theater and Visual Arts classes as mandatory in Basic Education. We will present data collected by the network project Observatory of the Training of Art Teachers, examining Art degrees curriculums in Brazilian universities and suggesting pathways. We observe that despite the increase in the offer of Art degrees, the number of art teachers are not enough to provide the needs of the educational demands. Therefore, it is necessary to create new courses, enlarge the vacancies of existing ones and to invest in the National Plan of Training of Teachers (Parfor).

This paper frames the daily life of education outside of formal school, by considering two types of non-formal discussion spaces in Côte d’Ivoire. I argue that both traditional and modern learning were reinvented in the street in response to the Ivoirian political crisis through the proliferation of spaces called grins and agoras. At daily meetings, teenagers and adults gathered important information regarding the crisis and also learned how to be in a conflicted society, often through dialogic encounters between members of different generations, professions and experiences. In the post-conflict context, these spaces, and the dialogue within them, have evolved to meet the changing needs of participants, further highlighting the connection between learning in everyday life and the surrounding structures and systems.

This paper analyzes the material concerning the Mathematics Curriculum of the State of Sao Paulo, in force since 2008, and the perceptions of teachers regarding its use. It is a qualitative, analytical-descriptive research, grounded on the material analysis and in a questionnaire applied to 80 Mathematics teachers from the public school network of Presidente Prudente municipality (SP). The material does not indicate significant changes in the contents in relation to previous curricula, but it establishes learning situations as teaching organizers. Results highlight that most teachers would not use the material in a spontaneous way. The rationale presented by the teachers refer mainly to the lack of theory in the material and to the students’ lag of knowledge.

This paper aims to make a mapping of how curricular practices in the Brazilian High School education have been conducted in the last ten years, seeking to observe them in a context of growing pedagogic aestheticizing and active learning in contemporary pedagogies. We will examine eight accounts of curricular practices self-entitled innovative and interactive, published in several Brazilian journals. As we decided for active methodologies of learning, associated to particular devices of interactivity, it seems that a pedagogical shape emerges in which the class is similar to a game of questions and answers, a quiz.

The present paper aims at showing the closeness between Piaget’s and Marx’s thoughts concerning basic theory and epistemology issues of sociological research. Specifically, about the way both authors study the relation between these parts and the whole social aspects, the relation between the material action and social representation, the relation between sync and diachrony and finally the relation between scientific and ideological activities. In such perspective, it will be analyzed Piaget’s studies regarding sociology and his agreement points with Marx’s thesis. The results of such research prove the existence of real nearness between both thoughts and what was analyzed.

This paper intends to discuss the enrollment of deaf students in higher education, with focus on the limits and progress of recent public policies of access. A questionnaire was used to interview deaf students from a public high school from the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. The study demonstrates that the non-recognition of sign language as first language and the lack of appropriation of Portuguese language by deaf people are barriers to the access of deaf students to higher education. In face of it, bilingual teaching emerges as a way to increase enrollment.

In this paper, we look at a high school to college transition program intended to prepare Latinx youth living in Arizona, a southwestern US border state, to negotiate, if not cross, borders, including those associated with accessing college. Purposefully, we problematize the at-risk discourses that reify the nature of these border landscapes within neoliberal framings aimed at explaining educational patterns of Latinxs and that infuse the college bridge program we examine. We demonstrate that while the program provides social and cultural capital, as well as additional temporary academic supports that high school students need to navigate college-going processes, it is also embedded with deficit perspectives that frame Latinxs as at-risk because of their culture, ethnicity, and language, or conversely, disregard their heritage entirely. Finally, we offer recommendations for future research of bridge and transition programs. We argue for turning examinations upside down to resituate and reconsider, and potentially dismantle, the enactments of at-risk deficit thinking, which still undergird many programs aimed at mediating borders experienced by Latinxs in the US.

This paper aims to situate the emergence of Programa Mais Educação (PME - More Education Program) in the political and educational context of Latin America and analyze the social significance of this experience for deprived children and youth in Brazil. This discussion is carried out in light of the State Reform of the 1990s and social studies on childhood and youth. It identifies in PME evidence of both the neoliberal trend experienced by Latin America, marked by rupture, continuity and setbacks, and the legacies of this policy regarding the expansion of the right to education through a concept of integral education centered on children and youth, their cultures and territories.

This paper presents the results of a study carried out with students from a public school in the state of Goiás. We involved the students in situations of research/experimentation, interviewed the teacher about his planning and analyzed the reports of his practice according to the Strands of Science Learning (SSL). It was evidenced that engaging in scientific reasoning prevailed in the teacher’s planning and practice. Engaging in scientific practice, which presented a high intensity in planning, was reduced during teaching. During classes, learning of science knowledge was enhanced. Therefore the SSL help understand and characterize teaching practice and student learning in learning configurations based on the experimentation process.

This paper maps the productions of the Mathematics Teachers Training generated by the Working Group on Mathematical Education in Higher Education, of the Brazilian Society of Mathematical Education. This investigation is aimed to analyze, among other aspects, the initial training of Mathematics teachers, the role of supervised internship practice and the development of the teaching professional. We sought to highlight the concerns that researchers, whose main field of interest is teaching in Higher Education, have about the initial and continued training of Mathematics teachers. We have identified, by means of Content Analysis, six pillars in which the topics presented in the body of the analysis are concentrated.
