Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Propôs-se desenvolver, neste trabalho, um modelo para o consumo de água para fins de irrigação com o objetivo de prever, por meio de simulação, o impacto que teriam diferentes épocas de plantio adotadas pelos irrigantes de toda uma bacia hidrográfica na vazão dos cursos d'água dessa bacia, na época mais seca do ano. O modelo desenvolvido resultados obtidos em função da capacidade do computador disponível e do tempo de processamento do modelo. O modelo mostrou-se sensível aos parâmetros de entrada testados, porém sua validação não pôde ser feita nesta parte do trabalho, em razão da complexidade da bacia hidrográfica simulada.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior In recent decades, the increased demand for food, both nationally and internationally has driven agricultural expansion in Brazil. Biophysical, social, and economic factors have made Brazilian Cerrado one of the biomes with the greatest capacity to occupy its territory with crops. This expansion has started in the 1970s, and currently, the Brazilian Cerrado accounts for 40% of the national agricultural production. Western Bahia is one of the most active agricultural frontiers globally in this biome, with a rapid increase in agricultural and irrigated areas. This study aims to make a hydrological, climatic, and water availability analysis and the impacts that this growth can caused in the last 40 years, from 1980 to 2020. First, considering the period 1980-2015, a climate analysis showed a significant reduction in rainfall of up to 12% since the 1980s, and a reduction in river flows, both for dry and rainy seasons. Seven sub-regions in Western Bahia were identified with a potential risk of conflicts over water use. These regions experienced a 150-fold increase in the irrigated area since 1990s and 90% from 2010 to 2018. In recent years, these conflicts have become more frequent due to a combination of factors: climate variability, increased demand for water resources, and continued trends of decreasing precipitation. Second, in a complementary analysis, extending the analysis period to 2020, it was investigated how the interaction of large-scale (represented by Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation – AMO) and mesoscale (topography) processes can affect the region’s climate variability. Precipitation and river discharge data indicate a continued reduction. Precipitation has decreased by 11.5% since 1980s. The rainiest bimester, December and January (DJ), indicated a significant negative correlation with AMO (R = -0.62, α = 0.01), showing that precipitation decreases in DJ when the AMO index is positive. Within these 40 years, the five rainiest and driest DJs were selected. The rainiest ones showed that large-scale mechanisms interact with the local topography, promoting a stronger convection and high rainfall rates over the region. There is a regional suppression of convection for this driest DJ bimesters, including over the topographic gradient, shifting the convection center further west, and decreasing rainfall in Western Bahia. The climate variability in the region and the intense growth of irrigation have made the potential of conflicts over water use more frequent. Furthermore, with the continuous increase in North Atlantic temperatures, it is unlikely that the wet climatic conditions existing before the early 1990s will return. Thus, precipitation in the region will be affected, putting pressure on water availability and directly impacting economic activities dependent on climate. Keywords: Climate change. Water security. Hydroclimatic analysis. Nas últimas décadas, o aumento da demanda por alimentos tanto nacional quanto internacionalmente impulsionou a expansão agrícola no Brasil. Fatores biofísicos, sociais e econômicos fizeram do Cerrado brasileiro um dos biomas com maior capacidade de ocupação de seu território com cultivos agrícolas. Essa expansão teve início na década de 1970 e, atualmente, o Cerrado brasileiro responde por 40% da produção agrícola nacional. O Oeste da Bahia é uma das fronteiras agrícolas mais ativas do mundo neste bioma, com rápido aumento de áreas agrícolas e irrigadas. Este estudo tem como objetivo fazer uma análise hidrológica, climática, de disponibilidade hídrica e dos impactos que esse crescimento causou nos últimos 40 anos, de 1980 a 2020. Primeiramente, considerando o período 1980-2015, uma análise climática mostrou uma redução significativa nas chuvas de até 12% desde a década de 1980 e redução das vazões dos rios, tanto na estação seca quanto na chuvosa. Sete sub-regiões do Oeste da Bahia foram identificadas com risco potencial de conflitos pelo uso da água. Essas regiões tiveram um aumento de 150 vezes na área irrigada desde 1990 e 90% de 2010 a 2018. Nos últimos anos, esses conflitos se tornaram mais frequentes devido a uma combinação de fatores: variabilidade climática, aumento da demanda por recursos hídricos e continuidade das tendências de diminuição da precipitação. Em segundo lugar, em uma análise complementar, considerando o período 1980-2020, investigou-se como a interação de processos de grande escala (representada pela Oscilação Multidecadal do Atlântico – AMO) e de mesoescala (topografia) podem afetar a variabilidade climática da região. Os dados de precipitação e descarga fluvial indicam uma redução contínua. A precipitação diminuiu 11,5% desde a década de 1980. O bimestre mais chuvoso, dezembro e janeiro (DJ), indicou uma correlação negativa significativa com a AMO (R = -0,62, α = 0,01), mostrando que a precipitação diminuiu em DJ quando o índice AMO é positivo. Nesses 40 anos, foram selecionados os cinco DJs mais chuvosos e secos. Os mais chuvosos mostraram que mecanismos de grande escala interagem com a topografia local, promovendo convecção mais forte e altas taxas de chuva sobre a região. Há uma supressão regional da convecção para os bimestres DJ mais secos, inclusive sobre o gradiente topográfico, deslocando o centro de convecção mais para oeste e diminuindo as chuvas no Oeste da Bahia. A variabilidade climática da região e o intenso crescimento da irrigação tornaram mais frequente o potencial de conflitos pelo uso da água. Além disso, com o aumento contínuo das temperaturas do Atlântico Norte, é improvável que as condições climáticas úmidas existentes antes do início da década de 1990 retornem. Assim, a precipitação na região será afetada, pressionando a disponibilidade hídrica e impactando diretamente as atividades econômicas dependentes do clima. Palavras-chave: Mudanças climáticas. Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico O oeste da Bahia passou por uma grande expansão agrícola nos últimos anos e nessa região estão localizados alguns dos maiores produtores agrícolas do Brasil. Por conta disso, entre 1990 e 2015, 31% da vegetação natural da região foi convertida para regiões de pastagem e agricultura. Essa mudança de uso do solo pode ter afetado as vazões dos rios da região. O objetivo desse trabalho é avaliar a magnitude desse impacto. Esse tipo de análise pode ser feito por meio da modelagem. Primeiro foi necessário calibrar os modelos INLAND (Integrated Model of Land Surface Processes) e THMB (Terrestrial Hydrology Model with Biogeochemistry) para simularem a hidrologia da região. Foram calibrados um total de 19 parâmetros resultando numa simulação com um índice de eficiência de Kling-Gupta (KGE) de 0,83 para o período de calibração e de 0,80 para o período de validação. Depois foram simulados cenários sem desmatamento e sem aquífero. A diferença entre o cenário controle e o cenário sem desmatamento mostrou que a substituição da vegetação natural por áreas agrícolas e pastagens aumenta o volume do aquífero (diminuindo a evapotranspiração) e consequentemente a vazão (tanto a média quanto os valores mínimos e máximos). A diferença entre o cenário controle e o cenário sem aquífero mostrou que o aquífero ajuda a estabilizar a vazão mantendo valores mais altos de vazão mínima. Esses resultados, apesar de parecerem positivos, podem estar escondendo uma possível mudança climática que pode diminuir a precipitação da região e no levar no futuro a uma diminuição da vazão. Portanto, é preciso que os tomadores de decisão leve esse estudo como um alerta e passem a monitorar o uso do solo e os seus impactos na vazão para evitar possíveis futuros conflitos no uso da água. The west of Bahia, a region where is located some of the largest agricultural producers in Brazil, has undergone a major agricultural expansion in recent years. As a result, between 1990 and 2015, 31% of the region's natural vegetation was converted to pasture and agricultural regions. This change in land use may have affected river flows in the region. The purpose of this work is, by computational modeling, to assess what type of impact is it. First, it was necessary to calibrate the INLAND (Integrated Model of Land Surface Processes) and THMB (Terrestrial Hydrology Model with Biogeochemistry) models to simulate the hydrology of the region. A total of 19 parameters were calibrated resulting in a simulation with a Kling-Gupta efficiency index (KGE) of 0.83 for the calibration period and 0.80 for the validation period. Then two scenarios were simulated, one without deforestation and another without aquifer. The no-deforestation scenario showed that deforestation increases the volume of the aquifer (decreasing evapotranspiration) and consequently the river flow. The no- aquifer scenario showed that the aquifer helps to stabilize the river flow by maintaining higher values of minimum flow. These results, despite appearing positive, may be hiding a possible climate change that could reduce precipitation in the region and lead to a decrease in flow in the future. Therefore, it is necessary that decision makers take this study as a warning and start to observe and analyze more the events in western Bahia. Keywords: Calibration. Deforestation. Aquifer. Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Dividida em dois capítulos, esta dissertação apresenta um modelo de programação linear para otimização da atividade agrícola para regiões selecionadas no Oeste da Bahia considerando o modelo de previsão hidroclimática e os indicadores e possíveis ganhos econômicos da adoção do sistema de previsão do início da estação chuvosa na região. No primeiro capítulo a aplicação do modelo de programação linear em diferentes níveis de uso de água demonstrou que o modelo pode fornecer informações para otimizar a atividade agrícola na região, especialmente em cenários de atraso ou redução de chuvas, além de poder guiar ações de governança dos recursos hídricos. O segundo capítulo apresenta os indicadores econômicos da atividade agrícola para o Oeste da Bahia, sendo demonstrado que a equivalência de um hectare irrigado se dá em média em 3.90 hectares de sequeiro e que a adoção do modelo de previsão de início da estação chuvosa pode gerar incrementos de até 30% na geração de receita da atividade agrícola. Divided into two chapters, this dissertation presents a linear programming model to optimize agricultural activity for selected regions in Western Bahia considering the hydroclimatic forecasting model and the indicators and possible economic gains from the adoption of the rainy season onset forecast in the region. In the first chapter, the application of the linear programming model at different levels of water use demonstrated that the model could provide information to optimize agricultural activity in the region, especially in scenarios of delay or reduction in rainfall, in addition to being able to guide governance actions by water resources. The second chapter presents the economic indicators of agricultural activity for the Western Bahia, showing that the equivalence of an irrigated hectare occurs on average in 3.90 hectares of rainfed land and that the adoption of the forecast model for the beginning of the rainy season can generate increases up to 30% in revenue generation from agricultural activity. Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais Em uma das fronteiras agrícolas mais ativas do mundo encontra-se a região Oeste da Bahia, que apresenta diversos fatores favoráveis ao desenvolvimento do agronegócio. Porém por ser localizada em uma região de transição entre o clima sazonal do Cerrado e o semiárido possui limitação em chuvas, o que desencadeou para região um avanço de áreas irrigadas, provocando conflitos sobre os recursos hídricos. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar previsões hidroclimáticas para o início da estação chuvosa (Ic) no Oeste da Bahia utilizando previsões de chuva do modelo climático de circulação geral da atmosfera CFSv2 e dados de precipitação dos produtos TRMM 3B42 e PERSIANN. Para isto foram calculadas a data de início da estação chuvosa para as três bases de dados e métricas de acurácia como MAE e Erro Médio para avaliar a acurácia das previsões de chuva do CFSv2 em relação aos dados observados. Os resultados mostraram que a acurácia das estimativas de Ic pelo CFSv2 possuem um gradiente no sentido oeste-leste da região e que dependem fortemente da data de inicialização das previsões hidroclimáticas. Os resultados também indicaram que com dois meses de antecedência o CFSv2 apresenta um MAE com 15 a 20 dias de diferença para os dados observados. Porém o CFSv2 demonstrou uma inconsistência maior para o extremo leste do Oeste da Bahia. Os testes de acurácia também evidenciaram que em anos de El Niño o CFSv2 tem um MAE de 2 a 8 dias maiores que para média analisada. Concluiu-se que a previsão hidroclimática pelo CFSv2 tem capacidade de dar suporte aos tomadores de decisão na região Oeste da Bahia, contribuindo para um uso mais eficiente dos recursos hídricos na região. No entanto, destaca-se que a previsão hidroclimática para esta região ainda carece de aprimoramentos, como modelos de maior resolução e com volumes de chuvas mais precisos. In one of the most active agricultural frontiers in the world is the western region of Bahia, which presents several factors favorable to the development of agribusiness. However, because it is located in a transition region between the seasonal climate of the Cerrado and the semi-arid region, it has limited rainfall, which has triggered an advance of irrigated areas for the region, causing conflicts over water resources. The present study aimed to evaluate hydroclimatic forecasts for the onset of the rainy season (Ic) in western Bahia using rain forecasts of the general circulation model CFSv2 and rainfall data of products TRMM 3B42 and PERSIANN. For this, the onset of the rainy season was calculated for the three databases and accuracy metrics such as MAE and Mean Error to evaluate the accuracy of the rainfall forecasts of CFSv2 in relation to the observed data. The results showed that the accuracy of the Ic estimates by CFSv2 has a gradient in the west-east direction of the region and that they depend heavily on the initialization lead of the hydroclimatic forecasts. The results also indicated that two months in advance, CFSv2 presents a MAE with 15 to 20 days difference for the observed data. However, the CFSv2 demonstrated a greater inconsistency to the extreme east of western Bahia. The accuracy tests also showed that in El Niño years the CFSv2 has a MAE of 2 to 8 days higher than for the average analyzed. It was concluded that the hydroclimatic forecast by CFSv2 has the capacity to support decision makers in the Western region of Bahia, contributing to a more efficient use of water resources in the region. However, it is noteworthy that the hydroclimatic forecast for this region still lacks improvements, such as models with higher resolution and more accurate rainfall volumes. Keywords: Rainy season. Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico O Brasil é um dos principais produtores e exportadores de soja e milho do mundo, atividade econômica que desempenha importante papel para a economia nacional. Uma prática agrícola que obtém grandes rendimentos de soja e milho conjuntamente e que contribui para o destaque na produção desses dois grãos é a adoção dos sistemas safra-safrinha, bastante aplicados em duas grandes regiões produtoras: Mato Grosso e MATOPIBA. Nestes sistemas, a soja é plantada no início da estação chuvosa para garantir que as condições climáticas sejam ainda favoráveis para plantar o milho, sobre a mesma área e no mesmo calendário agrícola. Entretanto, é previsto que as mudanças climáticas causadas pela mudança na composição atmosférica e o desmatamento de biomas naturais como Amazônia e Cerrado, podem ameaçar a sustentabilidade desses sistemas até o meio do século, devido à redução da precipitação durante o início da estação chuvosa, o que provoca perdas de produtividade na soja. O atraso do plantio da soja garante um aumento de sua produtividade, porém acarreta no atraso das datas de plantio do milho, o que coloca em risco a segunda safra. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os impactos das mudanças climáticas no milho de segunda safra e avaliar, conjuntamente com a soja, a sustentabilidade desses sistemas em cenários futuros. Nossas simulações mostraram uma redução na produtividade do milho à medida que se atrasa seu plantio devido ao atraso no plantio da soja. Uma data limite para o plantio da soja que ocasione um aumento da sua produtividade e que não cause perdas de produtividade no milho é 05 de Outubro. Medidas de adaptação como a redução do tamanho do ciclo fenológico para ambas as culturas foram testadas a partir do impacto na receita bruta do sistema safra-safrinha, considerando que as datas de plantio continuem as mesmas até 2050. Durações de ciclos totais do sistema safra-safrinha de 220, 200 e 180 dias mostraram que à medida que se reduz a duração total do ciclo, maior a receita bruta, sendo a combinação com um total de 180 dias a que mostrou maiores valores, para a região do Mato Grosso. Em cenário com desmatamento intenso, a medida de adaptação sugerida não atenua os efeitos das mudanças climáticas e leva a menores valores de receita bruta. No MATOPIBA, a redução no ciclo fenológico total do sistema não reduz os efeitos das mudanças climáticas em nenhum cenário. Nossa análise de receita bruta mostrou que mesmo usando a combinação de cultivares com menor duração de ciclo não foi possível atingir ou ultrapassar a receita bruta de referência. Outras medidas de adaptação devem ser adotadas conjuntamente com a adaptação de cultivar para o Mato Grosso. Para o MATOPIBA, os efeitos da mudança climática podem ser intensos até o meio do século, portanto a adoção dessas medidas de adaptação deve ser mais intensa do que no MT. An agricultural practice that contributes to a high production of these grains is double cropping, widely adopted in the main producing regions: Mato Grosso and MATOPIBA. In this system, soybean is planted in the beginning of the rainy season to ensure that climatic conditions are still favorable to plant maize, in the same area and same agricultural calendar. However, in the next years it is expected a climate change as a consequence of changes in atmospheric composition and deforestation of Amazonia and Cerrado biomes. This would affect the sustainability of double cropping until the middle of century, due to a decrease in precipitation in the beginning of rainy season, which leads to a reduction of soybean productivity. Delaying soybean planting dates increase its productivity, but also causes a delay in maize planting dates, which may lead to losses in maize productivity. The goals of this work are to evaluate climate change effects on second crop maize and the sustainability of double cropping system until 2050, in the main producing regions. The simulations showed a decrease in maize productivity as soybean is planted later. The soybean planting date threshold that ensures an increase in soybean productivity without losses in maize productivity is October 05. Adaptation measures, such as the reduction of phenological cycle of both crops, were tested from the gross revenue for the system in the future, considering that planting dates do not change until 2050. Total cycle lengths of the system of about 220, 200 and 180 days showed that as total cycle duration reduces, the gross revenue of the system increases, being 180 days combination the one that has higher gross revenue in MT. In a scenario with intense deforestation, the suggested adaptation measure does not attenuate the effects of climate change and leads to lower gross revenue values. In MATOPIBA, the reduction in the total phenological cycle of the system does not reduce the climate change effects in any scenario. The analysis of gross revenue showed that even the combination of cultivars with shorter cycle length could not achieve or exceed the reference gross revenue. Other adaptation measures should be adopted together with cultivars adaptation in MT. The climate change effects in MATOPIBA might be stronger and adaptation measures need to be more intense than in MT.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior O fogo florestal estabelece uma função ecológica na produtividade de diversos ecossistemas. No entanto, os regimes de fogo estão sendo profundamente alterados para uma dinâmica de fogos recorrentes, cuja força destrutiva atraiu pesquisadores em todo mundo na busca de respostas para seus efeitos adversos. Embora o poder destrutivo do fogo seja reconhecido, seus impactos econômicos foram pouco estimados, assim como os investimentos realizados em práticas de manejo de incêndios florestais, particularmente em florestas tropicais. Através desse trabalho de pesquisa é possível identificar que a informação econômica sobre os custos (investimentos feitos em práticas de manejo do fogo) e os benefícios (perdas econômicas evitadas pela mitigação) da gama de políticas e programas de gestão de incêndios em todo mundo é insuficiente para tomadas de decisões na gestão de incêndios. Consequentemente, os recursos financeiros não são estrategicamente direcionados para tornar o manejo de fogo mais eficiente na redução de incêndios. Este trabalho, pretende contribuir para essa lacuna de conhecimento através da realização de uma estimativa das perdas econômicas na produção sustentável de madeira na Amazônia Brasileira e uma avaliação de custo- benefício das práticas de manejo de incêndios florestais nesse bioma e no bioma Cerrado. Os resultados foram gerados através de modelos espacialmente explícitos e demonstram que as perdas econômicas pelo fogo na produção sustentável de madeira podem chegar a US$ 183 ± 30 ha/ano em áreas atingidas por incêndios recorrentes próximos a centros de moagem na Amazônia. Além disso, essas perdas podem chegar a US$ 565 ha/ano em regiões de alto lucro agrícola em ambos os biomas. Apesar das altas perdas, osinvestimentos realizados na mitigação do fogo ainda são baixos, em média US$ 3.7 ha/ano em terras públicas e US $ 11,2 ha/ano em terras privadas. Em contrapartida, mesmo que a mitigação seja pouco adotada, os benefícios das práticas de manejo, quando são efetivas na redução do fogo evitam perdas econômicas, que são substancialmente maiores que os custos da mitigação. Em alguns locais de floresta com alto estoque de carbono e em áreas lucrativas de produção agrícola, os benefícios da mitigação podem ser25 vezes maiores que seus custos. Através desse trabalho é possível identificar que os programas de mitigação de incêndios no Brasil não atendem os pontos críticos de perdas econômicas na produção de madeira na Amazônia e devem ser melhor direcionados. Além disso, os benefícios públicos das práticas de manejo somente ocorrem no Cerrado, quando o combustível (o volume de biomassa disponível para queimar) é gerenciado adequadamente, e na Amazônia somente quando há uma ação conjunta entre práticas de supressão, políticas e programas de incentivo para prevenção de fogo. Da mesma forma, a prevenção do fogo gera benefícios privados significativos para produtores agrícolas envolvidos ativamente em programas de mitigação de incêndios. The forest fire establishes an ecological function in the productivity of several ecosystems. However, fire regimes are being profoundly altered to a recurrent fire dynamic whose destructive force has drawn researchers around the world in search of answers to their adverse effects. Although the destructive power of fire is recognized, its economic impacts have been poorly estimated, as have investments in forest fire management practices, particularly in tropical forests. Through this research work it is possible to identify that economic information on costs (investments made in fire management practices) and the benefits (economic losses avoided by mitigation) of the range of fire management policies and programs worldwide is insufficient for decision making in fire management. Consequently, financial resources are not strategically directed to make fire management more efficient in reducing fire. This work intends to contribute to this knowledge gap through an estimate of the economic losses in the sustainable production of wood in the Brazilian Amazon and a cost-benefit assessment of forest fire management practices in this biome and the Cerrado biome. The results were generated through spatially explicit models and demonstrate that the economic losses by fire in sustainable wood production can reach US$ 183 ± 30 ha/year in areas affected by recurrent fires near grinding centers in the Amazon. In addition, these losses can reach US$ 565 ha/year in regions of high agricultural profit in both biomes. Despite high losses, investments in fire mitigation are still low, averaging US$ 3.7 ha/year on public lands and US$ 11.2 ha /year on private lands. On the other hand, even if mitigation is little adopted, the benefits of management practices, when they are effective in reducing fire avoid economic losses, which are substantially greater than mitigation costs. In some high-carbon forest sites and profitable areas of agricultural production, mitigation benefits can be 25 times greater than their costs. Through this work it is possible to identify that the fire mitigation programs in Brazil do not meet the critical points of economic losses in the production of wood in the Amazon and should be better targeted. In addition, the public benefits of management practices only occur in the Cerrado, when the fuel (the volume of biomass available to burn) is properly managed, and in the Amazon only when there is a joint action between suppression practices, policies and incentive programs for fire prevention. Likewise, fire prevention generates significant private benefits for agricultural producers actively involved in fire mitigation programs.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Devido à sua localização na fronteira agrícola, às interações com os pecuaristas e o seu domínio de mercado, os grandes abatedouros são potenciais pontos de alavancagem na cadeia de abastecimento de carne bovina. No entanto, o seu real papel na promoção da produção sustentável de carne bovina ainda não foi determinado. Esta dissertação analisa mudanças após o início da operação de vários grandes abatedouros para cinco variáveis: três relacionadas à intensificação – produção de proteínas e calorias de culturas e taxa de lotação – e duas relacionadas ao impacto ambiental – taxa de mudança de uso do solo e emissões de gases de efeito estufa. A análise é concentrada nos grandes abatedouros localizados nos dois biomas mais importantes da pecuária brasileira, Amazônia e Cerrado. Primeiramente, são selecionados 12 grandes abatedouros que começaram a operar em meados do período de 2000 e 2013 e delimitada suas zonas de influência. Em segundo lugar, foram delimitadas zonas de controle em regiões distantes da influência dos grandes frigorificos, unidades de conservação e terras indígenas. Em seguida, foram calculadas as mudanças nas cinco variáveis de estudo ao longo do período escolhido. Na Amazônia, os resultados mostram uma redução da taxa de mudança de uso do solo e das emissões de gases de efeito estufa nas zonas de influência e controle. Para as variéveis de intensificação, as proteínas e calorias advinda das culturas apresentam aumento significativo em ambas as zonas, enquanto a taxa de lotação não apresentou mudança nas zonas sob influência dos frigoríficos. No Cerrado, todas as variáveis mostram as mesmas respostas em ambas as zonas de influência e controle. Esses resultados não suportam a idéia de que os grandes abatedouros promovem a intensificação da pecuária ou melhorias na sustentabilidade da pecuária de corte na Amazônia e Cerrado. Due to their location at the agricultural frontier, their interactions with ranchers and their market domination, large slaughterhouses are potential leverage points in the beef supply chain for achieving sustainable beef production in Brazil. However, their actual role in promoting sustainable production has not yet been ascertained. This dissertation analyzes changes after the start of operation of several large slaughterhouses for five variables: three related to agricultural intensification – protein and calorie production from crops and cattle stocking rate – and two related to environmental impact – land use change rate and greenhouse gas emissions. I focus my analysis on the large slaughterhouses located in the two most important Brazilian biomes for cattle ranching, Amazonia and the Cerrado. First, I selected 12 large slaughterhouses that started operations midway between 2000 and 2013, and I delimited their influence zones. Second, I delimited control zones in regions far from the influence of large slaughterhouses and outside conservation units and indigenous lands. Next, I calculated changes in the five study variables over the study period. In the Amazon, the results show a reduction of the land use change rate and greenhouse gas emissions in both the influence zones and the control zones. For the intensification variables, protein and calories from crops increased significantly in both zones, while the stocking rates do not change in the zones under slaughterhouse influence. In the Cerrado, all variables show the same responses in both the influence and control zones. These results do not support the idea that the large slaughterhouses promote either intensification of cattle ranching or improvements in the sustainability of cattle ranching activity in the Amazon and the Cerrado.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico A agricultura possui um grande potencial de mitigação das mudanças climáticas por meio da adoção de práticas de manejo capazes de estocar carbono no solo. Para compreender melhor a influência das práticas de uso do solo na dinâmica de carbono no solo, este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a influência dos sistemas de manejo agrícolas nos estoques de carbono do solo no Brasil utilizando uma meta-análise. De 92 artigos considerados, 26 foram selecionados para análise estatística do estoque de carbono na profundidade de 0-20 cm, sob quatro sistemas de manejo: adubação química (ADU), adubação verde (ADUV), integração lavoura-pastagem (ILP1) e sistema de plantio direto (SPD). A análise estatística foi separada em duas, conforme as especificações do grupo controle nos artigos analisados: a área em que foi utilizada o sistema/prática agrícola vs. área não manejada (NM) e área em que foi utilizada o sistema/prática agrícola vs. vegetação nativa (VN). Os resultados estatísticos mostraram que solos sob as práticas de ADU possuem taxa de mudança de C no solo positiva, de 0,32 MgC/ha/ano, porém sob o efeito priming, esta taxa pode se apresentar negativa, enquanto o SPD apresentou 0,45 MgC/ha/ano. Ambos os tratamentos foram estatisticamente significativos (α = 10%). ADUV apresentou estoque de C no solo negativo, comparada a pastagens e ILP1 mostrou ser definida pelo tempo de implantação, textura do solo e grupo controle comparativo, obtendo, também, taxa de C negativa. Entretanto, nenhum dos dois foram estatisticamente significativos. Em relação à VN, apenas a combinação de pastagem com sistema de plantio direto possui potencial da taxa de acúmulo de C no solo ser positiva. Agriculture has a great potential for mitigation of climate change through the adoption of management practices capable of storing carbon in the soil. To better understand the influence of soil management practices on soil carbon dynamics, this study aimed to analyze the influence of agricultural management systems on soil carbon stocks in Brazil using a meta-analysis. From 92 articles considered, 26 were selected for statistical analysis of the carbon stock in the depth of 0-20 cm, containing 4 management systems: chemical fertilization (ADU), green manuring (ADUV), crop-pasture integration (ILP1) and no-tillage system (SPD). Two statistical tests were carried out, according to the control group specifications in the analyzed articles: managed vs. unmanaged area (NM) and managed vs. native vegetation (VN). The statistical results showed that soils under ADU practices have a positive soil C accumulation rate, 0.32 MgC/ha/year, but under the priming effect, this rate may be negative, while SPD presented 0.45 MgC/ha/year in the soil. Both treatments were statistically significant. ADUV showed negative soil C stock, compared to pastures, and ILP1 showed to be defined by the implantation time, soil texture and comparative control group, also obtaining a negative C rate. However, neither were statistically significant. When comparing the management systems with Natural Vegetation as Control (VN), only the combination of pasture with no-tillage system, showed in ILP1, has the potential to accumulate soil C.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Modelos biofísicos de crescimento de cultura consideram os fatores naturais de crescimento e produtividade das culturas agrícolas, mas negligenciam a influência de fatores econômicos no processo. Por outro lado, modelos estatísticos de natureza agroeconômica são utilizados para simular a produção de culturas sob a influência de variáveis econômicas, porém ignorando eventos biofísicos, como por exemplo a influência de uma seca. Este trabalho acopla um modelo agroeconômico a um modelo biofísico de crescimento da cultura de soja. Este trabalho fez simulações espacialmente distribuídas da produtividade de soja no território nacional para o período de 1994 a 2012, utilizando três tipos de modelos: um modelo puramente biofísico (INLAND – Integrated Land Surface Model); um modelo puramente agroeconômico (modelo de regressão linear) e um híbrido biofísico-econômico (INLAND/linear). Para o modelo agroeconômico e híbrido foram utilizados como parâmetros econômicos o custo de transporte, o tamanho médio da fazenda e o preço da soja. Utilizando um algoritmo genético (NSGA-II/Optis) foi realizada uma calibração da produtividade de soja em dois níveis hierárquicos. Foram realizadas oito simulações com configurações diferentes destes modelos. Os melhores resultados foram obtidos com os modelos que consideraram variáveis econômicas e climáticas. O modelo empírico, contemplando variáveis econômicas e climáticas, apresentou o melhor resultado entre todas as simulações, contemplando variáveis econômicas e climáticas, chegando a uma correlação de 0,72. O modelo biofísico com a inserção das variáveis econômicas, ou seja, com limitantes econômicos na produtividade de soja, teve a produtividade potencial simulada reduzida a uma produtividade real simulada próxima da observada, com viés médio no período 1994-2012 de -0,01 ton ha -1 . A correlação entre os dados simulados e observados aumentou de 0,12 usando o modelo puramente biofísico para 0,55 usando o modelo hibrido. O modelo puramente biofísico, quando testado xnacionalmente no Brasil, apresentou resultados de produtividade potencial próximos aos campeões de concursos de produtividade de soja. Crop models consider the environmental factors influencing the growth and yield of agricultural crops, but neglect the influence of economic factors on the process. On the other hand, statistical agroeconomic models are used to simulate crop yields under the influence of economic variables, however neglecting biophysical events, such as the influence of a drought. This work couples an agroeconomic model with a soybean crop model. This work simulated spatially distributed soybean yield in Brazil for the period 1994-2012, using three types of models: a purely biophysical model (INLAND – Integrated Land Surface Model); a purely agroeconomic model (linear regression model) and a hybrid biophysical- economic model. For the agroeconomic and hybrid models, the economic parameters used are the cost of transportation, average farm size and the soybean price. Using a genetic algorithm (NSGA-II/Optis) a calibration of the soybean yield was performed at two hierarchical levels. Eight simulations were performed with distinct settings of these models. The best results were obtained with the models that considered purely economic and climate variables. The empirical model, contemplating economic and climate variables, presented the best result among all the simulations reaching a correlation of 0.72. The biophysical model with economic variables introduced economic constraints on the soybean yield, had the simulated potential yield reduced to a simulated real yield close to the observed, with a mean bias of -0.01 ton/ha in the 1994-2012 period. The correlation between simulated and observed data increased from 0.12 using the purely biophysical model to 0.55 using the hybrid model. The purely biophysical model, when tested nationally in Brazil, showed results of potential yield close to the soybean yield contest champions

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Dada a grande extensão do Brasil, sua enorme diversidade de vegetação e heterogeneidade agrícola, o desenvolvimento de políticas agrícolas e de conservação requer uma compreensão dos padrões históricos de uso da terra para todo o país. Somente através da lente da história que as atuais tendências geográficas no uso da terra podem ser totalmente compreendidas e projeções futuras mais precisas podem ser feitas. Este estudo analisa os padrões espaciais da agricultura brasileira entre 1940 e 2014, com ênfase no uso da terra e nas emissões de gases de efeito estufa. Os padrões históricos de uso das terras pela agricultura e emissões de gases de efeito estufa foram investigados usando uma nova base de dados histórico-espacial com resolução espacial de 30” (aproximadamente 1 km x 1 km). Embora a fronteira agrícola ainda esteja expandindo na Amazônia e Cerrado, as taxas são muito menores do que antes, e em toda a parte oriental e sul do país, a área agrícola está diminuindo. A produção de soja e milho aumentou devido ao aumento da área e da produtividade, mas a produção de cana-de-açúcar aumentou principalmente devido à extensificação. As pastagens diminuíram em todas as regiões analisadas, exceto na Amazônia, mas o lento processo de transferência de tecnologia tem mantido a taxa de lotação de bovinos perto de 1 cabeça/ha, indicando um sistema de pecuária ineficiente. O Brasil está se movendo lentamente para uma agricultura mais intensiva e sustentável. Até 1975, o desmatamento da Mata Atlântica e do Cerrado foram as principais fontes de emissões de CO 2 pela mudança de uso da terra. Depois disso, a Amazônia tomou a primeira posição como fonte de emissões de CO 2 . As emissões decorrentes da mudança do uso da terra na Mata Atlântica e nos Pampas diminuíram gradualmente após 1975 e esses biomas tornaram-se sumidouros de CO 2 desde 1990. As emissões agrícolas totais estão diminuindo porque as emissões de CO 2 estão diminuindo e elas são várias vezes maiores (em termos de CO 2eq ) que as emissões de CH 4 e N 2 O. Por outro lado, o aumento da produtividade resulta em aumento das emissões pela agricultura. Brasil está a caminho da redução das emissões por uso do solo propostas na Política Nacional sobre Mudanças no Clima. Sobre as Contribuições Nacionalmente Determinadas no acordo de Paris, em 2015, as taxas passadas de restauração florestal são mais do que suficiente para atingir a medida sugerida no acordo. A conclusão é que o Brasil deveria ser mais audacioso em suas metas. Esses resultados fornecem uma das primeiras visões históricas abrangente e espacialmente explicita do uso da terra pela agricultura e pecuária das emissões de gases de efeito estufa no Brasil, fornecendo ideias claras para orientar futuros planejamentos territoriais, a agricultura sustentável, a formulação de políticas públicas e a tomada de decisões. Given the large size of Brazil, its enormous vegetation diversity and agriculture heterogeneity, the development of national agricultural and conservation policies requires an understanding of historical patterns of land use for the entire country. It is only through the lens of history that the current geographic trends in land use can be fully understood and accurate future projections made. This study analyzes the spatial patterns of the Brazilian agriculture between 1940 and 2014, with emphasis on land use and greenhouse gas emissions. I investigate the historical patterns of agricultural land use and greenhouse gases emissions in Brazil using a new historical-spatial database at spatial resolution of 30” (approximately 1 km x 1 km). Although the agriculture frontier is still expanding in the Amazon and Cerrado, rates are much lower than before, and throughout the eastern and southern part of the country, agricultural land use is actually decreasing. The production of soybean and maize increased due to increase in area and yields, but the production of sugarcane increased predominantly due to extensification. Pasturelands decreased in all regions analyzed, except in Amazonia, but the slow process of technology transference appears to be keeping the Brazilian stocking rate of cattle close to 1.0 head/ha, indicating an inefficient livestock system. Brazil is moving slowly towards a more intensive and sustainable agriculture. Until 1975, deforestation of the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado were the main sources of CO 2 emissions. After that, Amazonia took the first position as source of CO 2 emissions. Emissions from land use change in Atlantic Forest and Pampas decreased gradually after 1975 and these biomes become a sink of CO 2 since 1990. The total agricultural emissions are decreasing because the CO 2 emissions are decreasing and they are several times larger (in CO 2eq terms) than the CH 4 and N 2 O emissions. Brazil is heading towards the reduction of land use change emissions as proposed in the National Policy on Climate Change. About the Nationally Determined Contributions proposed in the 2015 Paris agreement, the past rates in forest restoration are more than sufficient to achieve the suggested measure proposed. The conclusion is that Brazil should be more audacious in its goals. My results provide one of the first comprehensive historical and geographically explicit overview of agricultural land use and greenhouse gases emissions in Brazil, providing clear insights to guide future territorial planning, sustainable agriculture, policy and decision-making.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico O Brasil é hoje o segundo maior produtor de soja do mundo, e a cultura é plantada por todo o país. Porém, nem sempre foi assim. As regiões atualmente mais produtivas eram consideradas inaptas para o cultivo da soja nos anos 1970, e a cultura era limitada à região Sul. As novas regiões foram incorporadas à produção apenas depois de desenvolvimentos significativos em melhoramento genético e práticas de manejo. A expansão da soja para essas áreas representou uma grande mudança no clima a que as plantas foram submetidas, e traz importantes lições sobre adaptação às mudanças climáticas futuras. O objetivo deste trabalho é superar a limitação de dados sobre área, produtividade e épocas de plantio para realizar uma avaliação quantitativa em larga escala das mudanças no clima, fotoperíodo e tecnologia da soja durante a expansão e compará-las a expectativas para o clima futuro. É desenvolvido um banco de dados espacialmente explicito de área colhida e produtividade de soja. São estimadas as limitações fotoperiódicas ao plantio das variedades de cada ano usando a latitude mais ao norte onde a soja foi colhida. Essa informação é combinada com dados espacializados de início e fim da estação chuvosa para obter estimativas espaciais e temporais da janela de plantio para o período 1974-2012. As estimativas são consideradas adequadas quando comparadas com datas de plantio recomendadas na literatura. As janelas de plantio da maior parte das regiões produtoras de soja no Brasil eram limitadas pelo fotoperíodo em 1974. Com o desenvolvimento de variedades insensíveis ao fotoperíodo, passaram a ser majoritariamente limitadas pela estação chuvosa em 1984. Esse desenvolvimento também teve o efeito de flexibilizar as datas de plantio, tornando possíveis os sistemas de dupla safra que hoje são comuns no Brasil central. O cultivo da soja se moveu para regiões bem mais chuvosas, sendo a mudança total no excesso de precipitação (P-ETC) de 2.33 mm dia -1 no período 1974-2012. A temperatura média aumentou a uma taxa de 0.49 °C década -1 nesse período, sendo 0.29 °C década -1 devido a tendências locais, mais rápido do que a taxa de aquecimento esperada para 2013-2050 (0.35 °C década -1 ). As produtividades mais altas foram obtidas nas regiões mais quentes. O financiamento e principalmente a coordenação das instituições de pesquisa e desenvolvimento agrícola na direção de objetivos comuns é provavelmente uma estratégia eficiente para adaptar os sistemas agrícolas brasileiros às mudanças climáticas, e deve trazer diversas externalidades positivas. Brazil is today the world's second largest soybean producer, and the crop is cultivated throughout the country. However, this was not always the case. The most productive soybean regions of today were deemed unsuitable for soybean planting until the 1970's, and the crop was limited to southern Brazil. The new regions were incorporated into production only after significant technological developments on soybean breeding and management practices. The expansion of soybeans into those areas represented a major change in the climate experienced by the plants, and provides important lessons on adaptation to future climate change. This work aims to overcome limitations of data on yields, area and planting dates in order to perform a large-scale quantitative assessment of the changes in climate, photoperiod and technology experienced by soybeans during the expansion, and compare them with future climate expectations. A spatially explicit dataset on soybean harvested area and yields is developed. The photoperiod limitations to the planting date of each year's varieties are estimated using the northernmost latitude where soybeans were planted. This information is combined with spatial rainy season onset and end to obtain spatial and temporal estimates of the planting window for the period 1974- 2012. The estimates compare well with planting dates recommended by the literature. With the development of photoperiod-insensitive varieties, planting windows went from being limited by the photoperiod on most of soybean-producing Brazil in 1974 to be limited by the rainy season in 1984. This development also had the effect of flexibilizing planting dates, making feasible the double cropping systems common today in central Brazil. Soybeans moved to much wetter regions, as total change in average excess precipitation (P-ETC) found was 2.33 mm day -1 on the historical period (1974-2012). Average temperatures rose at a rate of 0.49 °C decade -1 during the expansion, 0.29 °C decade -1 being due to local trends, faster than the expected rate for 2013-2050 (0.35 °C decade -1 ). The highest yields were also achieved in the warmer regions. Funding and coordinating agricultural R&D towards unified goals is likely to be an efficient strategy to adapt Brazilian agricultural systems to climate change, and may bring many beneficial side effects.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico O oceano Atlântico Tropical é a mais importante fonte de umidade da América do Sul (AS), resultante da ação dos principais sistemas meteorológicos que atuam na região. Contudo, a fonte e o destino no transporte de vapor de água na AS é fortemente influenciada pela floresta Tropical Amazônica. Assim, há necessidade de entender os impactos locais, regionais e globais do desmatamento da floresta amazônica no clima, na agricultura e na geração de energia hidrelétrica. Neste estudo, aplicou-se o método de conservação de massa (bulk-method), para identificar as fontes e os destinos do vapor de água que contribuem para a precipitação nas regiões economicamente relevantes, e os efeitos dos diferentes níveis de desmatamento na floresta amazônica. Os dados utilizados neste trabalho são de 6 cenários de desmatamento do experimento numérico de Pires & Costa [2013]. Os resultados mostram que a contribuição de vapor de água que entra pelo limite Oeste da bacia do Rio Xingu tende a reduzir com o aumento dos níveis de desmatamento. No trimestre Setembro, Outubro e Novembro (SON) há uma tendência de redução marcante da precipitação média mensal na região do Xingu seguindo o aumento das áreas desmatadas, onde os valores das anomalias atingem -86, -79 e -81 mm/mês correspondentes aos cenários de F20, F40 e F60 de desmatamento respectivamente. Esta redução da precipitação varia de 42 a 45% da precipitação total média mensal da bacia do Rio Xingu. As anomalias de precipitação no trimestre Dezembro, Janeiro, Fevereiro (DJF) foram de -42, -31 e -27 mm/mês para F20, F40 e F60 de área desmatada respectivamente. Estas reduções de precipitação correspondem a intervalos de 8 a 13% em relação a 321 mm/mês de precipiração total média mensal da região. Na bacia do Rio Madeira, há uma tendência de entrada de cada vez mais vapor de água na direção norte-nordeste (N-NE) e menos entrada de vapor de água na direção sudeste-leste (SE-E), sugerindo que com aumento dos níveis de desmatamento os ventos alísios (VA) de N-NE tendem a aumentar de intensidade enquanto que, os ventos alíseos de SE-E tendem a enfraquecer. No trimestre SON, os valores das anomalias foram de -19, -21 e -27 mm/mês correspondentes aos cenários de F20, F40 e F60 de desmatamento respectivamente. Estas reduções da precipitação variam entre 10 e 16% em relação a precipitação total média mensal (198 mm/mês) da bacia do Rio Madeira. Além disso, observou-se que o vapor de água evapotranspirado nas regiões do Acre, Rondônia, norte da Bolívia e noroeste do Mato Grosso, sob a influência dos Jatos de Baixos Níveis da América do Sul (JBN), adquirem uma maior redistribuição do alcance continental, se comparadas com áreas de vapor de água evapotranspirada de regiões não influenciadas por este sistema. No semestre de SON-DJF, há cada vez menos vapor de água proveniente da região ao sul da bacia do Rio Xingu sendo transportado para o sul da América do Sul (Paraguai, Uruguai e norte da Argentina). Os resultados aqui apresentados, nos indicam que, embora o desmatamento aumente o potencial convectivo, a disponibilidade de água é marcadamente reduzida, fazendo com que haja uma forte tendência de redução da precipitação e evapotranspiração com o aumento de áreas desmatadas. O complexo, e não-linear, mecanismo de retroalimentação no sistema Solo-Planta-Atmosfera poderia diminuir ou intensificar as mudanças climáticas antropogênicas. The tropical Atlantic Ocean is the most important remote moisture source of South America (SA), resulting from the action of the main acting climate systems in the re- gion. However, the source and transport of water vapor within SA is influenced by pres- ence of the amazon rainforest. So, there is a need to understand the local, regional or global impacts of deforestation on climate, agriculture and power generation. In this study, we use the bulk-method to identify the source of water vapor contributing to pre- cipitation events to economically relevant regions in amazonia and the effect of differ- ent scenarios of deforestation in amazon forest. The data used in this study are of 6 de- forestation scenarios from numerical experiment generated by Pires & Costa (2013). The results show that, the contribution of water vapor entering from the west of the Xingu River basin tends to reduce with increasing of deforestation scenarios. In the quarter of September, October, November (SON), there is a marked reduction trend in the average monthly rainfall in the Xingu region with increasing deforestation, with values of anomalies equal to -86, -79 and -81 mm/month corresponding to the scenarios of F20, F40 and F60 deforestation respectively. This reduction in rainfall ranges from 42 to 45% of the total average monthly rainfall of the Xingu River basin. The values of the anomalies in the quarter December, January, February (DJF) are -42, -31 and -27 mm/month for F20, F40 and F60 of deforested areas respectively. These reductions of rainfall correspond to the range of 8 to 13% of the total of 321 mm/month. For the Madeira River basin, there is an input trend of more and more water vapor in the north-northeast and less water vapor entry from the southeastern-eastern limit, suggest- ing that after deforestation there is an intensification of the trade winds toward north- northwest and weakening in the southeast to east. In the quarter SON the values of the anomalies are -19, -21 and -27 mm/month corresponding F20, F40 e F60 of deforesta- tion scenarios. These reductions of rainfall vary between 10 and 16% relative to the total monthly of Madeira River basin (198 mm/month). Moreover, we observed that the water vapor evaporated in the regions under the influence of SALLJs (Acre, Rondonia, northern Bolivia and northwestern Mato Grosso) acquire a greater redistribution of con- tinental reach, compared with areas of evapotranspiration water vapor not influenced by this system. The semester of SON-DJF, there is less and less water vapor coming from the southern of Xingu River basin being transported to southern South America – Para- guay, Uruguay and north of Argentine. The results presented here, indicate that although deforestation increases the potential convective, the water availability is markedtly re- duced. There is a strong tendency of reduction of precipitation and evapotranspiration with the increase of deforested areas. The complex and non-linear feedback mechanism in the Soil-Plant-Atmosphere system could diminish or intensify anthropogenic climate change.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Há uma grande expectativa global de que produção agrícola total do Brasil irá aumentar como em nenhum outro país do mundo para atender ao aumento da demanda por alimentos até 2050. Ao tentar atender a essa expectativa, o Brasil terá de enfrentar os efeitos de uma grave mudança climática induzida pela mudança na composição atmosférica. Além disso, se o futuro aumento da produção total se assemelhar a dinâmica do passado e a fronteira agrícola avançar sobre biomas naturais como a Amazônia e o Cerrado, corremos um grande risco. Estudos recentes indicam que o desmatamento em grande escala causa mudanças significativas na disponibilidade de água no ambiente e poderia ter implicações para os sistemas agrícolas. Esta tese investiga como a mudança climática e o desmatamento adicional podem afetar a produtividade das principais commodities exportadas pelo país até 2050: soja e pastagens para criação de gado. Foi utilizado um modelo de culturas agrícolas para avaliar os efeitos do clima simulado por quatro modelos do CMIP5 sob o cenário RCP8.5 do IPCC AR5 na produtividade de soja e pastagens. Estes resultados foram contrastados com um segundo grupo de simulações que representam os efeitos de cenários de desmatamento mais severos da Amazônia e do Cerrado no clima regional. As simulações de soja indicam que, dentre as regiões mais produtivas no centro-norte do Brasil, os efeitos das alterações climáticas são dependentes das datas de plantio. A produtividade das cultivares de soja plantadas em setembro, semeadas mais cedo por agricultores que optam por adotar sistemas safra-safrinha (duas culturas no mesmo espaço no mesmo calendário agrícola) deve diminuir expressivamente. No entanto, cultivares de soja que são plantadas em datas posteriores (novembro- dezembro), semeadas principalmente por agricultores que optam por cultivar apenas uma cultura no mesmo calendário agrícola, mostram um aumento da produtividade. A diminuição da produtividade para datas precoces está relacionada a uma tendência de diminuição mais acentuada da precipitação durante estes meses do ano, enquanto o aumento da produtividade em datas mais tardias é devido a um déficit hídrico menor e os efeitos positivos de um aumento da concentração de CO 2 atmosférico. Regiões produtoras do Sul do Brasil também mostram aumento da produtividade de soja até o meio do século, independentemente da data de plantio. Para as regiões produtivas do centro e norte do Brasil, movendo-se as datas de plantio de setembro para datas posteriores pode levar a um aumento da produtividade de soja, mas diminui a probabilidade de adoção de sistemas safra-safrinha. Além disso, cenários de desmatamento mais severos levam a um aumento da perda de produtividade de soja. As simulações de produtividade de pastagens mostram que, assim como no caso da soja, a produtividade das pastagens deve diminuir em regiões centrais e do norte do Brasil e aumentar ligeiramente nas regiões sul. Além disso, níveis mais elevados de desmatamento provocam maior redução da produtividade, e conduzem a perdas de produtividade pelo menos duas vezes maiores. De acordo com todas as simulações deste trabalho, as regiões mais afetadas são onde estão localizados os maiores produtores agrícolas nacionais (Mato Grosso) ou em regiões que começaram a ser exploradas mais recentemente e ainda guardam elevado potencial agrícola como o MATOPIBA, indicando que investimentos do governo nessas regiões sem a consideração apropriada dos riscos climáticos é uma estratégia de elevado risco. Finalmente, em face às mudanças climáticas e com reduzida evidência de que o desmatamento na Amazônia e no Cerrado estejam chegando a um fim, o Brasil deverá rever suas políticas agrícolas e conservacionistas e alcançar imediatamente níveis de desmatamento zero nestes biomas, e criar mecanismos para identificar e traçar soluções para adaptar sua agricultura às mudanças climáticas. There is a wide global expectation that Brazilian total agricultural output will increase like no other country in the world to meet the projected higher demand for food until 2050. While trying to meet this expectation, Brazil will face the effects of a severe climate change induced by the change in atmospheric composition. In addition, if the future increase in total production resembles the dynamics of the past and increasingly deforest natural biomes as the Amazon and the Cerrado, we run a great risk, as recent studies indicate that large-scale deforestation drives significant changes in water availability and could have implication for agricultural systems. This thesis investigates how climate change and additional deforestation may affect the productivity of the main commodities exported by the country until 2050: soybeans and cattle pasture. We used a gridded crop model to assess the effects of the climate simulated by four CMIP5 models under the IPCC AR5 RCP8.5 scenario on soybean and pasture productivity. We contrasted these results with a second group of simulations that account for the effects of more severe Amazon and Cerrado deforestation scenarios on regional climate. Soybean simulations show that, for central-northern Brazilian productive regions, the effects of climate change are dependent on the planting dates. The productivity of soybean cultivars planted in late September, sowed early by farmers who choose to adopt double-cropping systems (two crops on the same land in the same agricultural calendar) is predicted to expressively decrease. However, soybean cultivars that are planted in later dates (November- December), mainly sowed by farmers who choose to grow only one crop in the agricultural calendar, show increased productivity. The decrease in productivity for earlier dates is related to a sharper decreasing trend in precipitation during these months of the year, while the increased productivity in later dates is due to a smaller water deficit and the positive effects of an increased atmospheric CO 2 concentration. Southern Brazilian productive regions also show increased soybean productivity until the middle of the century, despite the planting date. For central-northern Brazilian productive regions, moving planting dates from September to later dates expressively increases soybean productivity, but decreases the probability of adopting double-cropping systems. In addition, increased levels of deforestation lead to increased soybean productivity loss. Pasture simulations show that, as well as in the case of soybeans, pasture productivity is predicted to decrease in central-northern Brazilian regions and slightly increase in southern regions. In addition, higher deforestation levels causes further productivity decrease, and lead to at least twice as large productivity losses. According to all simulations in this work, the regions most affected are either the major Brazilian production region (Mato Grosso) or where the exploration has begun more recently and still hold an expressive agriculture potential as MATOPIBA, indicating that government investments in these regions without the proper consideration of the climate risks are a high-risk strategy. Finally, in the face of climate change and with little evidence that deforestation in Amazonia and Cerrado is ending, Brazil needs to review its agriculture and conservation policies and immediately shift to a new standard of zero deforestation in Amazonia and Cerrado, and create mechanisms to identify and trace solutions to adapt its agriculture to climate change.

Os modelos de interação atmosfera-biosfera (LSMs) são ferramentas fundamentais em pesquisas relacionadas a superfície terrestre, atmosfera, hidrologia, previsão do tempo e clima. Desde o surgimento dos primeiros modelos na década de 60, esses modelos sofreram uma grande evolução e estão se tornando cada vez mais complexos. Esses LSMs simulam uma grande quantidade dos processos que ocorrem na biosfera, como os fluxos de radiação, calor, vapor de água e momentum. Cada um desses processos possui um ou mais parâmetros e o uso correto desses parâmetros são de suma importância para se obter uma simulação realista (confiável). Mas nem sempre é possível coletar ou inferir o valor desses parâmetros. Nesses casos pode-se realizar uma calibração do modelo, que é um conjunto de testes (simulações), com valores aleatórios de parâmetros, que são realizados até que se encontre um bom ajuste do modelo. No entanto, uma calibração simples acaba ajustando o modelo apenas localmente. Para se obter uma calibração que represente toda uma região (com características similares) é preciso realizar uma calibração multi-sítio. Este trabalho apresenta uma ampliação do Optis (software de calibração automática) que possibilita a realização de calibrações multi-sítio do modelo INLAND. Duas técnicas de calibração multi-sítio foram desenvolvidas, a MSMO (Multiple Site Multiple Objectives) e a AMSMO (Average Multiple Sites Multiple Objectives). A diferença entre elas é que, enquanto a MSMO leva em consideração cada sítio de forma independente, a AMSMO faz uma média dos sítios. Um experimento numérico foi realizado comparando as técnicas multi-sítio com calibrações realizadas em um único sítio. Os resultados mostraram que a calibração AMSMO é a que gera uma melhor representação dos sítios usados na calibração, atingindo mais de 80% de ajuste. Land surface models (LSMs) are important tools for research on land surface, atmosphere, hydrology, weather forecast and climate. Since the emergence of the first models in the 1960s, these models experienced substantial evolution and are becoming increasingly complex. A large number of biosphere processes, such as radiation, sensible heat, water vapor and momentum fluxes are simulated by these LSMs. Each process has one or more parameters and the correct choice of these parameters are very important to obtain a realistic simulation. However, collect (or infer) the parameters values is not always possible. In this case, it is suggested to perform a model calibration, which is a set of tests (simulations), with random parameters values, repeated until a good model fit is achieved. However, a simple calibration only adjusts the model locally. To obtain a calibration that represents an entire region (with similar characteristics), it is necessary a multi-site calibration. This work presents an extension of the Optis (an automatic calibration software) that allows multi-site calibrations of the INLAND model. Two multi-site calibration techniques were developed, MSMO (Multiple Site Multiple Objectives) and AMSMO (Average Multiple Sites Multiple Objectives). The difference between them is that MSMO considers the results of each site independently, while AMSMO makes an average of the sites. A numerical experiment was conducted comparing multi- site techniques with calibrations perfomed in a single site. The results showed that AMSMO calibration generates a better representation of the sites used for calibration, with model performance greater than 80% of the best model performance.

Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais Estudos realizados para avaliar os principais fatores responsáveis pela dinâmica da vegetação na Amazônia tais como clima e/ou desmatamento sugerem a possibilidade da floresta Amazônica não resistir a uma eventual mudança do regime de chuvas, e ser transformada em um ecossistema de vegetação mais esparsa, do tipo savana, o que deu origem ao termo “Savanização da Amazônia”. Parte destes estudos iniciais no entanto utilizavam apenas cenários de climas futuros, negligenciando na maior parte das vezes o efeito do fogo, e principalmente o efeito da limitação nutricional na dinâmica da vegetação. Recentemente, no âmbito da modelagem climática, grandes avanços têm sido realizados na tentativa de se construir modelos que incorporem o efeito da limitação nutricional e do fogo de forma que se possa avaliar e dimensionar os efeitos dos mesmos na vegetação em larga escala. Neste trabalho, o principal objetivo foi avaliar os efeitos isolados e combinados do clima (variabilidade interanual e CO2), fogo (F) e limitação nutricional por fósforo (P) utilizando o modelo de vegetação dinâmica INLAND na transição entre Amazônia-Cerrado. O modelo INLAND é o primeiro modelo brasileiro que permite simular a dinâmica da vegetação incorporando estes fatores. O INLAND caracteriza a vegetação através de tipos funcionais de planta, que combinados de forma diferente dão origem aos biomas. A limitação nutricional no modelo é estabelecida através de uma função linear entre o teor de fósforo total no solo e a capacidade máxima de carboxilação da enzima Rubisco (Vmax). A Rubisco é a principal enzima responsável por regular as taxas de carboxilação nas plantas com mecanismo fotossintético do tipo C3 atuando diretamente na produtividade primária líquida (NPP) e no incremento de biomassa. Dois mapas de Vmáx foram elaborados para serem utilizados como dados de entrada nas simulações, baseados em dados regionais (PR) (medidas de campo) e globais (PG) de teor de P total no solo. No delineamento do experimento numérico, 24 simulações foram realizadas de forma que diferentes combinações entre os fatores clima, P, F e CO2 fossem obtidas. Para validação das simulações, um mapa de índice de área foliar (LAI) MODIS e dados de biomassa foram contrastados com valores simulados pelo modelo INLAND. Os resultados demonstraram que isoladamente, o efeito do fogo sobre a NPP no Cerrado é positivo e maior em relação aos efeitos da limitação nutricional, contrariamente ao que acontece na região Amazônica onde o P atua na diminuição da NPP. O CO 2 por sua vez quando avaliado combinadamente aos efeitos do fogo demonstrou-se como um amenizador, aumentando a NPP na região de transição. Com relação ao clima, o uso de uma variabilidade inter-anual melhorou a representação dos valores de NPP, biomassa e LAI pelo INLAND. Os valores de LAI e biomassa simulados apresentaram boa correlação com os dados observados de forma que o gradiente de vegetação Amazônia - Cerrado conseguiu ser representado. A melhor representação da composição da vegetação pelo modelo INLAND foi quando considerado os efeitos de PG+F+CO2. Studies to assess the main factors responsible for the dynamics of vegetation in the Amazon such as climate and / or deforestation suggest the possibility of the Amazon rainforest may not resist a potencial change in rainfall patterns, and be converted to an ecosystem of more sparse vegetation like savanna, which gave rise to the term “Amazon Savannization”. Some of these initial studies, however, used only future climate scenarios, neglecting in their majority the fire effects and especially the effect of nutrient limitation on vegetation dynamics. Recently, in the context of climate modeling, advancements have been made in an attempt to build models that incorporate the nutritional restriction effect and the fire to assess and measure their effects on vegetation at a large scale. In this work, the main objective was to evaluate the isolated and combined effects of climate (inter annual variability and CO2), fire (F) and nutritional limitation by phosphorus (P) using the dynamic vegetation model INLAND in the transition between forest-Cerrado. The INLAND model is the first Brazilian model to simulate the vegetation dynamics incorporating these factors. The INLAND characterizes the vegetation through plant functional types, which combined differently give rise to biomes. The nutritional limitation is established through a linear function of the total phosphorus content in the soil and the maximum carboxylation capacity of Rubisco enzyme (Vmax). The Rubisco is the main enzyme responsible for regulating carboxylation rates in plants with the C3 photosynthetic mechanism type acting directly on net primary productivity (NPP) and the increase of biomass. Two regional the datasets of Vmax to be used as input data of the simulations, based on regional (PR) (field measurements) and global data (PG) of total P content in the soil. In the design of numerical experiment, 24 simulations were performed for different combinations of climate factors, P, F and CO2 were obtained. To validate the simulations, regional datasets of dry season leaf area index (LAI), and biomass were compared against simulated values by the INLAND model. The results showed that isolation, the effect of fire on the NPP in the Cerrado is positive and higher than the effects of nutritional restriction, contrary to what happens in the Amazon biome where the P acts to reduce the NPP. The CO2 when evaluated in combination with the effects of fire acted as an attenuator increasing the NPP in the transition region. With respect to the climate, the use of inter-annual variability improved representation of biomass and LAI simulated by INLAND. The LAI and biomass simulated values showed good correlation with Amazon-Cerrado observed gradient. The best representation of the vegetation composition by INLAND was found when the effects of PG+F+CO2 were combined.

Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais O desmatamento nos biomas Floresta Amazônica e Cerrado no Brasil comprometem a qualidade dos sistemas ambientais, tais como a fauna, a flora e a hidrologia. Diversos estudos mostraram que a substituição da vegetação natural de uma bacia hidrográfica por espécies exóticas ou por monocultivos alteram a vazão de longa duração. Esse trabalho tem como objetivo estudar os efeitos no regime de vazões causado pela alteração na cobertura vegetal natural da bacia hidrográfica do rio Xingu. Para a obtenção de séries longas de vazão, foi utilizado o modelo InLand para simular o balanço de água na superfície e o modelo THMB para o cálculo da vazão. Dois bancos de dados foram testados para serem usados como forçantes climáticas dos modelos, sendo um de base diária e o outro mensal. A validação do modelo foi feita através da comparação entre os dados medidos em estações fluviométricas com os resultados das simulações utilizando regressão linear, erro na vazão de longa duração, viés médio (MBE) e raiz do erro quadrático médio (RMSE). Também foram feitos histogramas com frequência do erro mensal do modelo para determinar se o viés é baixo. As simulações abrangeram o período de 1951 a 2000, sendo as séries divididas em duas partes de 15 anos no início e no fim da série (1951 a 1965 e 1986 a 2000, respectivamente). Também foram comparadas as simulações onde havia a presença de desmatamento na bacia e onde a área encontrava-se completamente preservada para verificar se existe diferença significativa entre as séries, em que momento as séries divergem e o comportamento da diferença entre as séries e a evolução do desmatamento. Os resultados mostraram que, em média, a vazão aumentou num intervalo de 20 a 30% para todos os pontos analisados e a precipitação aumentou em menos de 5%, insignificante a 99% de confiança. Além disso, a fração de precipitação que é convertida em escoamento variou de 0,19 a 0,27 no período de 1951 a 1965, para 0,23 a 0,33, mostrando que houve redução na proporção de conversão da precipitação em evapotranspiração entre os períodos. Também houve diferença significativa (p < 0,01) entre as vazões simuladas com e sem presença de desmatamento na bacia, mostrando os valores da série da diferença aumentam com o incremento no desmatamento, sugerindo que o desmatamento cause alteração na vazão de longa duração. Deforestation in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes in Brazil compromise the quality of environmental systems, such as fauna, flora and hydrology. Several studies have shown that replacing the natural vegetation of a watershed by exotic species or monocultures alter the stream flow. This work aims to study the effects on the flow regime caused by the change in natural vegetation cover of the Xingu River basin. To obtain long series of flow, the InLand model was used to simulate the water balance at the surface and the THMB model to calculate the flow. Two databases were tested to be used as models of climate forcings, being the first with a daily data, and the second has monthly data. The model validation was performed by comparing the measured data in gauged stations with the simulation results using linear regression error in the stream flow, mean bias (MBE) and root mean square error (RMSE). Histograms with the monthly frequency error model were also made to determine whether the bias is low. The simulations covered the period from 1951 to 2000, the series is divided into two parts of 15 years at the beginning and end of the series (1951-1965 and 1986-2000, respectively). Were also compared simulations where there was the presence of deforestation in the basin and where the area was completely preserved to check for significant differences between the series, in which the time series diverge and the behavior of the difference between the series and the evolution of deforestation. The results showed that, on average, the flow increased in a range of 20 to 30% for all analyzed points and precipitation increased by less than 5%, an insignificant 99% confidence level. Furthermore, the fraction of precipitation which is converted into flow ranged from 0.19 to 0.27 from 1951 to 1965 to 0.23 to 0.33, showing that a reduction in the conversion ratio in the precipitation evapotranspiration between periods. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Os recursos hídricos são de suma importância para a manutenção da vida em nosso planeta e, por isso, conhecer a sua real disponibilidade em uma localidade é uma questão primordial nos tempos atuais para estabelecer estratégias de uso racional e sustentável dos mesmos. Para isso, torna-se indispensável realizações de pesquisas que possibilitem obter informações sobre o comportamento e a dinâmica dos hidrossistemas continentais, o que pode ser feito por meio do uso combinado de dados climatológicos e hidrológicos concisos e representados por longas séries temporais. Porém, poucas regiões do globo dispõem de longos períodos com registros de dados para estudos rigorosos dos hidrossistemas continentais. E, ainda assim, mesmo nos locais onde existem longas séries de dados, poderá haver períodos com falhas ou informações inconsistentes, gerando limitações que penalizam e dificultam a compreensão da variabilidade de processos que regulam o funcionamento dos hidrossistemas continentais e a previsão do ciclo hidrológico. Para preencher a ausência de série de dados ou falhas nos mesmos, o sensoriamento remoto é uma ferramenta de grande potencial para se criar banco de dados com diversas aplicabilidades nas pesquisas hidrológicas, como por exemplo, a inicialização de modelos hidrológicos e para monitoramento hidrológico da região estudada. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o uso de dados de sensoriamento remoto radiométrico a partir dos produtos MODIS para a estimativa da largura do rio na bacia do Araguaia através da detecção e estimativa da largura do rio Araguaia e de seus principais afluentes e gerando um banco de dados com mapas de largura dos rios para a bacia do Araguaia nos anos de 2000 a 2013. Notou-se que os dados MODIS são satisfatórios para detectar rios com larguras superiores a 232 m sendo que os dados analisados nessa faixa apresentaram erro relativo médio menor que 13% e de 28% para rios com largura entre 116 e 232 m. O MODIS é o sensor ideal para estimativa de largura do rio e monitoramento hidrológico para regiões onde não possui informações observadas. Water resources are of great importance for the maintenance of life on our planet and, therefore, knowing their actual availability in a locality is a key issue in current times to establish strategies for rational and sustainable usage. For this, it is essential to conduct research that allows obtaining of information about the behavior and dynamics of continental hydrosystems, which can be done through the combined use of climatological and hydrological concise data and represented by long time series. However, few regions of the world have long periods with data records for rigorous studies of continental hydrosystems. And yet, even in places where there are long data series, there may be periods with fails or inconsistent information, generating limitations that penalize and difficult the understanding of processes variability that regulate the functioning of continental hydrosystems and the hydrological cycle prediction. To fill the absence of data series or gaps in them, remote sensing is a tool of great potential for creating database with various applications in hydrological research, such as the initialization of hydrologic models and hydrologic monitoring in the region studied. The objective of this study is to evaluate the use of remote sensing data from MODIS products for hydrological monitoring in the Araguaia River basin through the detection and estimation of the width of the Araguaia River and its main tributaries and generate a database with maps of wetlands and width of rivers for Araguaia basin for the years from 2000 to 2013. It was observed that MODIS data are satisfactory for detecting rivers with widths greater than 232 meters and the data analyzed in this range had average relative error less than 15% and 28% for rivers with a width between 116 and 232 meters. The MODIS is ideal sensor for estimating the width of the river and hydrological monitoring for regions where no information has observed.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Urban Planning, as the key to solve the negative impacts of population growth, obtained a considerable gain in guidelines and legal tools for the regulation of urban policies on the approval of the Cities' Statute (Law No. 10.257/2001). However, the implementation of urban planning requires geoinformatic infrastructure that assists the planning and management of cities, providing analysis and diagnostic mechanisms for decision making. Thus, this study evaluated the ability of dynamic models of land use based on the structure of cellular automata for simulating the landscape in current and future events. The model is implemented in the DINAMICA EGO free software. In this model, the input data constitute cartographic variables that influence the phenomenon of urban expansion. Besides these variables, "landscape maps" were also used, which refer to land use in the beginning and in the end of the interval studied. In order to obtain historical information regarding land use, it was used images taken from the ThematicMapper (TM) sensor, on board Landsat 5 satellite, which were classified using techniques of spectral mixture and vegetation index for discriminating the dominant classes. By combining these variables through the sum of the weights of evidence, it was obtained the areas which are most likely to transitions. The models were set at intervals of 13, 9 and 4 years, and their assessment was made by comparing reference data using neighborhood analysis, as known as similarity indices. In the projections for the years of 2015 and 2019, it was observed a trend toward the consolidation of semi-urbanized areas, and the expansion in radial direction from the town center, bounded by regions of high declivity, or with fragments of Mata Atlantica, which hinders urbanization, following the trend shown in the previous periods. Through quantitative assessment of the similarity of the results of simulation models with reference data, values were above 0.45 for analysis of exponential decay, and 0.84 for analysis of steady decay at a 11x11 window, which were considered satisfactory. Therefore, the modeling based on cellular automata (CA) spatialized the changes which occurred over the intervals analyzed, similarly to the ixstandards that actually occurred in the same interval, and indicated the ability to extrapolate the model's period in order to find out future projections of possible transitions. O planejamento urbano, fundamental para solucionar os impactos negativos do crescimento demográfico, teve na aprovação do Estatuto das Cidades (Lei no 10.257/2001) um considerável ganho em diretrizes e instrumentos normativos para regulamentação de políticas urbanas. Contudo, sua aplicação requer uma infraestrutura geoinformacional que auxilie o planejamento e gestão dos municípios, fornecendo mecanismos de análises e diagnósticos para tomadas de decisão. Este trabalho visou avaliar a capacidade de utilização de modelos dinâmicos de uso do solo baseados na estrutura de autômatos celulares para simulação da mancha urbana do município de Viçosa-MG em momentos atuais e futuros. O modelo adotado está implementado no software DINAMICA EGO, de caráter gratuito. Neste modelo, os dados de entrada constituem-se em variáveis cartográficas que influenciam o fenômeno de expansão da mancha urbana. Além destas, utiliza-se também mapas de paisagem , que se referem ao uso do solo nas épocas de início e final do intervalo temporal estudado. Para obtenção das informações de uso do solo históricas, foram utilizadas imagens do sensor Thematic Mapper (TM), do satélite Landsat 5, que foram classificadas por meio de técnicas de mistura espectral e índice de vegetação de forma a discriminar as classes predominantes. Com a combinação destas variáveis pelo somatório de seus pesos de evidência, obteve-se as áreas mais susceptíveis às transições. Os modelos foram definidos em intervalos de 13, 9 e 4 anos e sua avaliação foi feita pela comparação com dados de referência utilizando contextos de vizinhança, conhecidos por índices de similaridade. Nas projeções realizadas para os anos de 2015 e 2019, observou-se a tendência de consolidação de áreas semiurbanizadas e a expansão em sentido radial ao centro da cidade, limitado pelas regiões de alta declividade ou com presença de fragmentos de Mata Atlântica que impedem a urbanização, seguindo a tendência apresentada nos períodos anteriores. Pela avaliação quantitativa da similaridade dos resultados dos modelos de simulação com dados de referência, os valores estiveram acima de 0,45 para análise com decaimento exponencial e 0,84 para análise de decaimento constante em janela 11x11, considerados satisfatórios. Assim, a modelagem baseada em autômatos celulares espacializou as transformações ocorridas ao longo dos períodos analisados de forma semelhante aos padrões que de fato ocorreram, e indicaram a capacidade de extrapolação dos modelos no tempo com a finalidade de se conhecer projeções futuras das possíveis transições.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico One of the traditional forms of agricultural expansion is the conversion of natural ecosystems into cultivated areas, usually through deforestation. The Upper Xingu, located in the state of Mato Grosso Brazil, has been referred to as one of the regions of most intense conversion of natural ecosystems to pasture or cropland (specially soybean) in the country, and there is a concern with respect to how and how much these changes in vegetation modify the hydroclimatology of the region. Thus, this study aims to assess the influence of land cover changes on evapotranspiration and streamflow in small catchments of the Upper Xingu, in the southeastern Amazon basin. Streamflow was measured in small catchments with uniform land use in the region of study, and single point simulations were performed considering Tropical Rainforest, Cerrado and Pasture as land use in the InLand model and Soybean cropland as land use in the AgroIBIS model. Meteorological data and model input parameters such as the soil saturated hydraulic conductivity were measured at the Tanguro Ranch - MT. The simulation results provided by the InLand and AgroIBIS for the mean stream discharge were similar to the values observed between September 2008 and August 2010. Comparing the simulated streamflows for the four land uses in the Upper Xingu, it is possible to observe that the water yield in natural ecosystems (tropical rainforest and cerrado) was 53,5% lower than in agricultural ecosystems (pasture and soybean cropland). During the period of study, evapotranspiration was 38,3% lower in agricultural ecosystems compared with natural ecosystems. We also assessed the influence of 11 different soil textures on the partitioning of precipitation into evapotranspiration and mean annual streamflow for the four vegetation cover types studied. Regardless of soil texture, the simulated runoff in areas covered with tropical rainforest was always lower than that simulated for the other vegetation covers, and the difference between the simulated runoff for tropical rainforest and cerrado was greater for lower hydraulic conductivity saturated values. Uma das formas tradicionais de expansão da fronteira agrícola é por meio da conversão de ecossistemas naturais em áreas de cultivo, geralmente por meio de desmatamento. A região do Alto Xingu, no Estado do Mato Grosso - Brasil, tem sido indicada como uma das regiões de mais intensa conversão de ecossistemas naturais em pastagens ou culturas agrícolas (principalmente a soja) no país e há preocupação em se compreender como e quanto essa alteração da cobertura vegetal modifica a hidroclimatologia da região. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é examinar o quanto a mudança na cobertura vegetal influencia a evapotranspiração e a vazão de microbacias do Alto Xingu, na região sudeste da bacia Amazônica. Foram feitas medições de vazão em microbacias com uso uniforme do solo na região de estudo e foram conduzidas simulações pontuais com as coberturas de floresta, cerrado e pastagem no modelo InLand e com cobertura de soja, no AgroIBIS. Os dados meteorológicos e parâmetros como a condutividade hidráulica saturada do solo utilizados nos modelos foram medidos na Fazenda Tanguro MT. As vazões médias simuladas nos modelos InLand e AgroIBIS foram semelhantes aos valores observados em campo no período de setembro de 2008 a agosto de 2010. Comparando-se as vazões simuladas para as quatro coberturas no Alto Xingu, estima-se que a conversão da precipitação em vazão nos ecossistemas naturais (floresta e cerrado) foi 53,5% menor que nos ecossistemas agrícolas (pastagem e soja). Quando comparado aos ecossistemas naturais, a evapotranspiração dos ecossistemas agrícolas foi 38,3% menor durante o período de estudo. Também se buscou avaliar a influência de 11 diferentes classes texturais no particionamento da precipitação em escoamento total e evapotranspiração nas coberturas estudadas. Independente da textura do solo considerada, o escoamento total com cobertura de floresta tropical foi sempre inferior à simulada para as demais coberturas e a diferença entre o escoamento total simulado para as coberturas de floresta e cerrado é maior quanto menores são os valores de condutividade hidráulica saturada.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is able to influence the atmospheric circulation and consequently changes weather patterns in both local and global scale. This study aimed to understand how temperature and precipitation in South America respond to modes of climate variability such as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Atlantic Dipole (AD), for current and future conditions, considering an extreme emission scenario of GreenHouse effect (GHG). We used four models as part of coupled model of Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change/Fifth Assessment Report (IPCC/AR5), intercomparison project, Phase 5 (CMIP5): MRI (Meteorology Research Institute, Japan), INM (Institute for Numerical Mathematics, Russia), NCC (Norwegian Climate Center, Norway) and ECHAM / MPI (Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Germany). The results have shown that the dominant patterns in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, are respectively the ENSO and Dipole Atlantic which were better simulated by the models MPI and NCC (INM and MRI) and proved satisfactory (unsatisfactory) and able (unable) to reproduce the response of precipitation and temperature in relation to observed climate over the South America. For future conditions it has been found more intense episodes of ENSO, while for AD the inter-hemispheric gradients is more intense. Furthermore, it is projected that this pattern, known as the negative phase of AD, may significantly influence the atmospheric circulation and alter the patterns of temperature and precipitation in South America. A Temperatura da Superfície do Mar (TSM) é capaz de influenciar na circulação atmosférica e consequentemente alterar os padrões climáticos tanto em escala local quanto global. Este trabalho buscou entender como a temperatura e precipitação na América do Sul respondem em função dos modos de variabilidade climática El Niño Oscilação-Sul (ENSO) e Dipolo do Atlântico (DA), para as condições atuais e futuras, considerando um cenário extremo de emissão de Gases de Efeito Estuda (GEE). Foram utilizados quatro modelos climáticos acoplados do Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change/Fifth Assessment Report (IPCC/AR5), pertencentes ao Projeto de Intercomparação de Modelos Acoplados, Fase 5 (CMIP5): MRI (Meteorology Research Institute, Japão), INM (Institute for Numerical Mathematics, Rússia), NCC (Norwegian Climate Center, Noruega) e ECHAM/MPI (Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Alemanha). Os resultados mostraram que os padrões dominantes nos Oceanos Pacífico e Atlântico, são respectivamente o ENSO e Dipolo do Atlântico e foram melhor reproduzidos pelos modelos MPI e NCC (INM e MRI) e se mostraram satisfatórios (insatisfatórios) e capazes (incapazes) de reproduzir a resposta da precipitação e temperatura, em relação ao clima observado sobre a AS. Para condições futuras têm-se episódios de ENSO mais intensos, enquanto que para configurações do tipo DA notam-se gradientes inter-hemisféricos mais intensos, onde se observou TSM's mais baixas no Atlântico Norte. Além disso, projeta-se que este padrão, conhecido como fase negativa do DA, poderá influenciar significativamente na circulação atmosférica e alterar os padrões de temperatura e precipitação na AS.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico The performance of LSEMs (Land surface and ecosystem models) depends on the parameters of the equations representing the simulated process. However, the measurement of some parameters can be impractical or even impossible; therefore, they need to be estimated, or preferably optimized specifically for each ecosystem. When the parameters are calibrated to a single variable (mono-objective problem) they may not represent the reality, because the complexity of the model and its dependence on several variables (multi-objective problem). Thus, simultaneous multi-objective optimizations are indispensable. However, the optimization performance decreases as the number of variables to be optimized simultaneously increases. Furthermore, the study of simultaneous optimization using more than three objectives is a new area and not yet sufficiently studied. For simultaneous optimization of a large number of variables, there is a method that uses concepts of hierarchical systems theory in which the optimization occurs from the fastest (radiative fluxes) to the slowest process (carbon allocation). This study evaluates the performance of the hierarchical optimization using the index D (the average of the ratios between the individual outputs of multi-objective optimization and monoobjective). Understanding how the performance index D varies with respect to the number of objective functions optimized and to the number of hierarchical levels is important for the development of this research area. Two steps are necessary to achieve the study goals. First, a sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the output variables sensitivity to the model parameters. After, simulations were made using all possible combinations among the seven micrometeorological variables available (PARo, fAPAR, Rn, u *, H, LE, NEE) taking into account the hierarchy of processes. The results indicate that for up to three objective functions, hierarchical multi-objective optimization generates better results than the simultaneous multiobjective optimization (one hierarchical level), provided that the parameters distribution among hierarchical levels is consistent with the sensitivity analysis. Another important result shows that for the same number of outputs optimized, the greater the number of hierarchical levels the better the performance of the optimized model. However, the model performance falls quickly as the number of objective functions increases, evidencing that the power of hierarchy calibration that use a high number of objective functions is highly dependent on the removal of some constraints for model s performance. O desempenho de um LSEM (Modelo de superfície terrestre e ecossistema) depende dos parâmetros das equações que representam os processos simulados. Contudo, a mensuração de alguns destes parâmetros pode ser impraticável ou até mesmo impossível; por isso, necessitam ser estimados ou, preferencialmente, otimizados para cada ecossistema. Quando os parâmetros são calibrados para uma única variável (problema mono-objetivo) eles podem não representar bem a realidade, dado a complexidade do modelo e sua dependência de diversas variáveis (problema multiobjetivo). Por isso, há a necessidade de uma otimização simultânea multiobjetiva. Porém, o desempenho da otimização diminui com o aumento do número de variáveis otimizadas simultaneamente e, além disso, o estudo da otimização simultânea de mais de três objetivos é uma área relativamente nova e não suficientemente estudada. Para a otimização simultânea de um grande número de variáveis, existe uma metodologia na qual se utiliza conceitos de teoria hierárquica de sistemas em que a otimização ocorre dos processos mais rápidos (fluxos radiativos) para os mais lentos (alocação de carbono). Este trabalho avalia o desempenho da otimização hierárquica do modelo, utilizando o índice D (a média das razões individuais entre as saídas das otimizações multiobjetiva e monoobjetiva). Entender como o índice de desempenho D do algoritmo de otimização hierárquico varia em relação ao número de funções objetivo otimizadas é de extrema importância para o desenvolvimento desta área de pesquisa. Para fazer atingir os objetivos, foram necessárias duas etapas. Primeiramente, foi feita uma análise de sensibilidade, a fim de conhecer a sensibilidade das variáveis de saída aos parâmetros do modelo. Depois, foram feitas simulações com todas as combinações possíveis entre as sete variáveis micrometeorológicas disponíveis (PARo, fAPAR, Rn, u*, H, LE, NEE) levando em consideração a hierarquia dos processos. Os resultados encontrados indicam que, para até três funções objetivo, a otimização multiobjetiva hierárquica pode gerar resultados melhores do que a otimização multiobjetiva tradicional (um único nível hierárquico), desde que a distribuição dos parâmetros entre as variáveis seja feita de forma coerente com a análise de sensibilidade. Outro resultado importante revela que para um mesmo número de saídas otimizadas, quanto maior o número de níveis hierárquicos melhor o desempenho do modelo otimizado. Porém, o desempenho do modelo diminui rapidamente quando o número de funções objetivo aumenta, evidenciando que o poder da calibração hierárquica para o uso de um grande número de funções objetivo é altamente dependente de algumas restrições que o modelo possui e um alto desempenho do modelo para muitas funções objetivo será possível somente após a remoção delas.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Extreme weather events can be understood as occurrences in a given year, floods, storms, frosts, heat waves and even prolonged droughts. The frequency of these events is attributed in most cases to the El Niño and La Niña, which in turn are derived from variations in the sea surface temperature of the Pacific Ocean.The consequences of these changes in the Pacific Ocean are forthright about the levels of temperature and rainfall on the planet and, in many respects, tend to affect those sectors of the economy dependent on the weather. In the case of agriculture, the whole performance, in terms of productivity, is affected by changes in temperature and precipitation levels.In order to evaluate the effects of El Niño and La Niña on the performance of agricultural productivity, the present study aimed to study the average level of productivity of crops of sugar cane, rice, beans, wheat, maize and cassava under the influence of changes in rainfall and temperature. As a focus of the study was selected the Northeast and southern Brazil.From panel regressions, we estimated the effects of sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean on the regime of precipitation and temperature levels of each Brazilian municipality. In a second step, was related to the levels observed temperature and precipitation with the average productivity of each culture studied by panel models with fixed effects. Finally, when related to estimates found in the first and second stage of the estimation, the product was the variation in average yield resulting from changes caused by El Niño and La Niña.The main results found point that Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul were those most harmed by the occurrence of phenomena El Niño and La Niña. Neles it was verified that productivity levels of corn and soybeans were significantly reduced, so that, some municipalities these regions, may register the total commitment of their crops. Overall, losses were found for almost all cultures studied in the two regions. Eventos climáticos extremos podem ser compreendidos como ocorrências, num determinado ano, de inundações, tempestades, geadas, ondas de calor e até mesmo secas prolongadas. A freqüência desses eventos é atribuída na grande maioria das vezes aos fenômenos El Niño e La Niña que, por sua vez, são decorrentes das variações nos níveis de temperatura da superfície do mar do Oceano Pacífico.As consequências dessas alterações no Oceano Pacífico são diretas sobre os níveis de temperatura e precipitação do planeta e, em vários aspectos, tendem a afetar todos aqueles setores da economia dependentes do clima. No caso da agricultura, todo o desempenho, em termos da produtividade, é afetado pelas alterações nos níveis de temperatura e precipitação.Com a finalidade de avaliar os efeitos dos fenômenos El Niño e La Niña sobre o desempenho da produtividade agrícola brasileira, o presente estudo teve como objetivo principal estudar os níveis médios de produtividade das lavouras de cana-de-açúcar, arroz, feijão, trigo, milho e mandioca sob a influência das alterações nos níveis de precipitação e temperatura. Como foco do estudo foi escolhido as regiões Nordeste e Sul do Brasil.A partir de regressões em painel, estimou-se os efeitos das temperaturas da superfície do mar no Oceano Pacífico sobre o regime de precipitação e os níveis de temperatura de cada município brasileiro. Numa segunda etapa, relacionou-se os níveis observados de temperatura e precipitação com a produtividade média de cada cultura estudada por meio de modelos em painel de efeitos fixos. Finalmente, quando relacionadas as estimativas encontradas na primeira e segunda etapa da estimação, o produto foi a variação na produtividade média decorrente das alterações causadas pelos fenômenos El Niño e La Niña.Os principais resultados encontrados apontam que a Bahia e o Rio Grande do Sul foram aqueles mais prejudicados pela ocorrência de fenômenos El Niño e La Niña. Neles verificou-se que os níveis de produtividade do milho e da soja foram significativamente reduzidos, de forma que, alguns municípios dessas regiões, podem registrar o total comprometimento de suas lavouras. No geral, perdas foram encontradas para quase todas as culturas estudas nas duas regiões.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior The Amazon rainforest is one of the most important ecosystems in the world with the highest biodiversity on the planet. In spite of this reputation however, it has been subjected to anthropogenic pressures in recent decades. The expansion of agriculture and livestock has been considered the main cause of deforestation in the region. Because it is important to understand the biosphere-atmosphere feedbacks processes in the Amazon, this work was done to evaluate the resilience of the natural ecosystem and the productivity of soybean and pasture at different levels of deforestation and increased [CO2]. A simplified model that represents the interactions between climate, forest and land use in Amazonia was used. We implemented five sets of simulations as follows: (1) control, (2) radiative effect (global warming) of CO2, (3) radiative and physiological effects of CO2, (4) effect of changes in land use and (5) radiative and physiological effects of CO2 plus changes in land use. The productivity simulated which considereding all the effects of future scenarios for the years 2020 and 2050 were compared to the control simulation. For the control simulation, we aboveground live biomass (AGB) modeled, including live leaf and wood pools, in Amazonia ranged from 5.1 to 20.7 kgC.m-2, with a mean value of 17.9 kgC.m-2, generally decreasing from north to south. Net primary productivity (NPP) showed the same geographic pattern, with values ranging from 1.04 to 1.29 kgC.m-2.yr-1, with a mean value of 1.21 kgC.m-2.yr-1. While the soybean yield ranged from 1610 to 3665 kg.ha-1, with a mean value of 2704.7 kg ha-1 the dry matter pasture yield ranged from 6,852 to 23,766 kgDM.ha-1.yr-1 with a mean value of 16,245.5 kgDM.ha-1.yr-1. In response to climate change for the year 2020, we found changes in AGB of -16%, in soybean yield of -10% and in pasture yield of -2%. With the introduction of physiological effects in simulations the changes were -7% for AGB, -4% for soybean and +1% for the pasture. In response to the change in land use, AGB declined in relation to control simulation to 37% when the deforested area was replaced by soybeans, and it decreased to 34% when the deforested area was replaced by pasture. The soybean yield and pasture productivity decreased to 18% and 29%, respectively. When all the effects were analyzed jointly, AGB declined to 37%, soybean yield to 21% and pasture productivity to 29%. For the year 2050 changes in AGB, in soybean yield and in pasture productivity were also higher in the simulations in which all effects were considered, with a 63% reduction in the AGB, 31% for soybean yield and 33% for pasture productivity in a pessimistic scenario. The combined effects of climate change (due to changes in atmospheric composition) and change in land use caused a significant reduction in the productivity of the natural ecosystem and in the two crops analyzed. In general, the effect of deforestation was the most important factor for this reduction. The identification of strategic areas for the preservation of natural ecosystems associated with the development of new cultivars adapted to future climatic conditions would strengthen agriculture in the Amazon. This identification would make better use of areas already deforested without the need to move so rapidly in the remaining forests. A Floresta Amazônica é um dos mais importantes ecossistemas do mundo, possuindo a maior biodiversidade do planeta. Apesar de toda sua relevância, ela vem sendo submetida a pressões antrópicas nas últimas décadas. A expansão da agricultura e da pecuária tem sido considerada a principal causa do desmatamento na região. Considerando-se a importância do entendimento dos processos de retroalimentação clima-biosfera na Amazônia, este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar a resiliência do ecossistema natural e da produtividade da soja e da pastagem em diferentes níveis de desmatamento e elevação de CO2, por meio de um modelo simplificado que represente as interações entre o clima e o uso do solo na Amazônia. Foram realizadas cinco conjuntos de simulações: (1) controle, (2) efeito radiativo (aquecimento global) do CO2, (3) efeito radiativo e fisiológico do CO2, (4) efeito climático da mudança no uso do solo e (5) efeitos radiativo e fisiológico do CO2 + mudanças no uso do solo. Em seguida, as produtividades simuladas, considerando todos os efeitos dos cenários futuros para os anos de 2020 e 2050, foram comparadas à simulação controle. Para a simulação controle, a biomassa viva acima do solo (AGB) modelada para o ecossistema natural, incluindo folhas e tronco, na Amazônia, variou de 5,1 a 20,7 kgC.m-2, com valor médio 17,9 kgC.m-2, geralmente decrescendo de norte para o sul. A produtividade primária líquida (NPP) mostrou o mesmo padrão geográfico, com valores variando de 1,04 a 1,29 kgC.m-2.a-1 e valor médio de 1,21 kgC.m-2.a-1. Enquanto a produtividade de grãos da soja variou de 1.610 a 3.665 kg.ha-1, com valor médio 2.704,7 kg.ha-1. Já a produtividade de matéria seca da pastagem variou de 6.852 a 23.766 kgMS.ha-1.a-1, com valor médio de 16.245,5 kgMS.ha-1.a-1. Como resposta às mudanças climáticas para o ano de 2020, foram encontradas alterações médias na AGB de -16%, na produtividade da soja de -10% e na produtividade da pastagem de -2%. Com a introdução do efeito fisiológico nas simulações, as alterações foram de -7% para a AGB, de -4% para a soja e de +1% para a pastagem. Como resposta à mudança no uso do solo, a AGB decresceu em relação à simulação controle até 37% quando a área desmatada foi substituída por soja, enquanto decresceu até 34% quando a área desmatada foi substituída por pastagem. Já a produtividade da soja e da pastagem decresceram até 18% e 29%, respectivamente. Quando foram analisados todos os efeitos conjuntamente, a AGB decaiu até 37%, a produtividade da soja -21% e da pastagem -29%. Para o ano de 2050, as alterações na AGB, na produtividade da soja e da pastagem também foram maiores nas simulações em que todos os efeitos foram considerados, com redução de até 63% na AGB, de até 31% para a produtividade da soja e de até 33% para a produtividade da pastagem no cenário mais pessimista. Os efeitos combinados das mudanças climáticas causadas pela mudança na composição atmosférica e pela mudança no uso do solo provocaram uma redução significativa na produtividade do ecossistema natural e das duas culturas agrícolas analisadas. De maneira geral, o efeito do desmatamento foi o mais importante para essa redução, portanto, a identificação de áreas estratégicas para a preservação do ecossistema natural associada ao desenvolvimento de novos cultivares adaptados às condicões climáticas futuras poderiam fortalecer a agropecuária na Amazônia, propiciando um melhor proveito das áreas já desmatadas, sem a necessidade de avançar-se de modo tão acelerado sobre as florestas.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Nitrogen availability in terrestrial ecosystem has an important effect on the global carbon cycle and may influence the accumulation of carbon in ecosystems, since these depend on the availability of nutrients such as nitrogen to support the growth of vegetation. A variety of dynamic ecosystem models have been used to gain a better understanding of the relationship between nutrient availability, the C cycle and possible climate change. These models differ significantly in their conceptualization, formulation, parameterization and input data. In this work we used the ecosystem dynamics model IBIS to investigate the influence of nitrogen stress on photosynthesis. The model simulates the cycling of N in soil and plants, allowing the estimation of the values of stocks of this nutrient in each of the compartments of the plant and the assessment of the influence of N deficiency in growth. A comparison of simulated and observed data confirms that IBIS robustly simulates the behavior of net primary production (NPP), biomass, foliar N and soil N. When the vegetation is exposed to nitrogen stress by a reduction of N-leaf fraction, NPP decreases. When atmospheric carbon dioxide was increased, N stress limited the plant s capacity to respond by stimulating photosynthesis in response to the increased concentration of atmospheric CO2. This indicates that inclusion of the relationship between C and N in surface models produces a better simulation of ecosystem behavior. We also observed that there is an increase in N leaf concentration with the age of the forest, which serves as an indicator of increased availability of N for the growth of secondary forest. A disponibilidade de nitrogênio (N) nos ecossistemas terrestres tem importante efeito sobre o ciclo de carbono. Variações na disponibilidade desse nutriente, no espaço e no tempo, podem afetar o crescimento e a produção das plantas, alterando a dinâmica dos ecossistemas e, consequentemente, as formas que a vegetação troca massa e energia com a atmosfera, causando uma retroalimentação no clima em nível regional ou global. Uma variedade de modelos de dinâmica de ecossistemas tem sido utilizada a fim de se obter um melhor entendimento da relação entre a disponibilidade de nutrientes, o ciclo do C e as possíveis mudanças climáticas, diferindo significativamente nas conceitualizações, formulações, parametrizações e dados de entrada. Neste trabalho foi implementada ao modelo de dinâmica de ecossistema IBIS, a influência do estresse de N na fotossíntese, permitindo estabelecer a ciclagem de N no solo e na planta, possibilitando inferir os valores dos estoques deste nutriente em cada um dos compartimentos da planta e assim avaliar a influência da deficiência de N no crescimento da mesma. Através da comparação entre os dados simulados pelo modelo e os observados em campo, verificou-se que o modelo apresentou bom desempenho ao simular o comportamento da produção primária líquida (NPP), biomassa, N foliar e no solo. Quando a vegetação foi submetida a uma condição de estresse por deficiência de N, pela redução da fração de N foliar, o modelo respondeu com diminuição na NPP, indicando a relação entre a deficiência deste nutriente e a capacidade da planta em sequestrar C da atmosfera. Isso indica que ao se incluir a relação entre C e N nos modelos de superfície, é possível obter-se melhores respostas do comportamento do ecossistema frente a variações ambientais, o que auxilia na melhor compreensão das retroalimentações entre biosfera e atmosfera que são desencadeadas por variações na disponibilidade de nutrientes.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico There is a clear shift happening in the physical environment of the Amazon forest, where human intervention has intensified dramatically during the last half of the twentieth century. Recent studies suggest that changes in regional climate caused by local deforestation have the potential to cause parts of the Amazon to cross an ecological tipping point : a critical threshold at which a relatively small perturbation can qualitatively alter the state or development of a system, in this case shifting the Amazon system into a new and drier equilibrium. In addition to the deforestation of the Amazon, continuing deforestation of the Cerrado (which has already been deforested by more than 55%) could combine with the climate impacts of Amazonian deforestation to produce a significant increase of the duration of the dry season in the transition zone between forest and savanna ( arc-of-deforestation‟) in south east Amazonia. However, the limits and patterns of deforestation in the Amazon and Cerrado that would affect forest‟s climate remain unknown. The aim of this study is to investigate the response of the climate of different regions of the Amazon rainforest to progressive deforestation of the Amazon and the Cerrado, and assess the possibility of the emergence of an alternative bioclimatic equilibrium. To achieve this goal, we generated 10 Amazon deforestation scenarios and 10 mixed deforestation scenarios, combining forest and savanna removal, and all scenarios were implemented in the coupled atmosphere-biosphere model CCM3-IBIS. We run 5 ensembles for each scenario, for 50 years each, with CO2 fixed at 380 ppm. The results show that when we consider the climate for the total forest area, there is no transposition of the tipping point. However, considering the arc-of-deforestation climate, we observed the emergence of a bioclimatic equilibrium typical of seasonal forest, and in regions in the south, southwest and east of the forest a bioclimatic equilibrium typical of savanna. In all of these cases, the combined effect of forest and Cerrado deforestation was significant. These results show the resilience of some regions of the forest and the vulnerability of others, which can help decision makers and conservationists in the development and implementation of conservation policies. Há uma clara mudança acontecendo no ambiente físico da floresta amazônica, onde a intervenção humana se intensificou drasticamente durante a última metade do século XX. Recentes estudos sugerem que mudanças no clima regional causadas pelo desmatamento local possuem o potencial de fazer com que partes da Amazônia atravessem o chamado ponto de desequilíbrio do sistema. Este ponto se refere à probabilidade da Amazônia cruzar um limite crítico, que poderia fazer com que a mesma salte para um estado de equilíbrio bioclimático alternativo, mais seco que o atual. Além do desmatamento amazônico, a remoção total do Cerrado, que atualmente já foi desmatado em mais de 55%, agindo em conjunto o desmatamento da Amazônia, poderia induzir a um aumento na duração da estação seca na região de transição entre floresta e savana (arco do desmatamento), o que pode contribuir para o surgimento de um equilíbrio bioclimático alternativo para a região. Porém, ainda não se sabe quais os limites e sob quais padrões de desmatamento da Amazônia e do Cerrado o clima da floresta será afetado. O objetivo deste trabalho é investigar a resposta do clima de diferentes regiões da floresta amazônica ao desmatamento progressivo da Amazônia e do Cerrado, e verificar a possibilidade do surgimento de equilíbrio bioclimático alternativo para as mesmas. Para atingir esse objetivo, foram gerados 10 cenários de desmatamento amazônico e 10 cenários de desmatamento combinado entre floresta e Cerrado, que foram implantados no modelo acoplado atmosfera-biosfera CCM3-IBIS. Foram rodadas cinco ensembles para cada cenário, e as simulações tiveram a duração de 50 anos, com CO2 fixo em 380 ppm. Os resultados mostram que quando se considera o clima médio para a região total de floresta, não ocorre transposição de equilíbrio. Porém, considerando o clima médio para a região do arco do desmatamento, foi observado o surgimento de equilíbrio bioclimático típico de floresta sazonal, e em regiões no sul, sudoeste e leste da floresta foi observada transição para equilíbrio bioclimático típico de savana. Nos casos em que houve transposição do ponto de desequilíbrio do sistema, o efeito combinado do desmatamento de floresta e Cerrado mostrou-se significativo. Estes resultados mostram a resiliência de algumas regiões da floresta e a fragilidade de outras, o que pode auxiliar tomadores de decisão e conservacionistas na elaboração e implementação de políticas de conservação na floresta.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico The polar regions are a very important component of Earth's climate system where significant annual and seasonal variations occur. Before this, the objective of this chapter is to analyze the variation of surface temperature in Antarctica and compare them the reanalysis, the analyze of influence that the modes of climate variability on the variation of surface temperature in Antarctica. The observed data used were obtained through READER. Already the reanalysis used were those of the NCEP/NCAR, ERA-Interim and MERRA. With the goal of having a local analysis, the Antarctic continent was divided into five sectors. After the analysis by regions of Antarctica, it became clear that the continent has undergone changes in surface air temperature during the period 1989 to 2009. South Shetland Islands was the sector that has adverse result to compare with the rest of the continent, the trend changed heating to cooling. Another important feature about the trend of temperature in the Antarctic continent was that during the autumn the trend was significant warming in the region of East Antarctica (Continental and Pacific Ocean sectors) and sector of the Weddell Sea, much influenced by the AAO that was significantly correlated with temperature data, especially in the second decade (2000-2009) where the AAO showed a weakening. In terms of reanalysis, realizes that the MERRA presented the best performance for most regions. The only region that the reanalysis showed a weak performance was in the Ross Sea. It is concluded that when working with climate models that take into consideration the reanalysis for Antarctic region, care should be taken to examine the study period and which the region. Diante disto, o objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a variação da temperatura em superfície na Antártica e compará-las as reanálises, visando analisar a influência que os modos de variabilidade climática exercem sobre a variação da temperatura em superfície na Antártica. Os dados observados utilizados foram obtidos através do READER para o período de 1989 a 2009. Já as reanálises utilizadas foram as do NCEP/NCAR, ERA-Interim e MERRA. Com o objetivo de se ter uma análise local, o continente Antártico foi dividido em cinco setores. Após a análise por regiões da Antártica, ficou claro que o continente passou por mudanças de temperatura do ar em superfície durante o período de 1989 a 2009. As Ilhas Shetland do Sul foi a região que apresentou resultado oposto ao compararmos com o restante do continente, a tendência mudou de aquecimento para resfriamento. Outra característica importante em relação a temperatura no continente Antártico foi que durante o outono a tendência foi de aquecimento significativo na região da Antártica Oriental (setores Continental e Oceano Pacífico) e setor do Mar de Weddell, muito por influência da AAO que apresentou correlações significativas com os dados de temperatura, principalmente na segunda década (2000-2009) onde a AAO apresentou enfraquecimento. Em termos de reanálises, percebe-se que o MERRA apresentou o melhor desempenho para a maioria das regiões. A única região que as reanálises apresentaram fraco desempenho foi no Mar de Ross. Conclui-se que ao trabalhar com modelos climáticos que levam em consideração as reanálises para região da Antártica, deve-se ter o cuidado de analisar o período de estudo e qual a região, a fim de levar em consideração mais de uma reanálise para obter melhor desempenho.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Front of global climate change scenarios, studies using land surface models are needed to assess the impact of increased CO2 and the carbon balance in terrestrial ecosystems. However, to be effective these models must be carefully calibrated to accurately represent ecosystem processes. Generally, the model is calibrated for one site and then used with the same set of calibrated parameters, either in other sites or in a whole region with the same plant functional type. In view of the exposed, this research has two main objectives: first, make a multi-site calibration, using two sites simultaneously, and evaluate their performance; and then, make application of the results of multi-site calibration to generate estimates of net primary production (NPP) in cerrado and grassland ecosystems in South America. To investigate the multi-site calibration, the calibration was performed to net ecosystem exchange (NEE) for two pasture sites in the Amazon. Twenty different objective functions, being five adjustment measures subject to four optimization methods (two individual optimizations - one for each site - and two multi-site optimizations - one with the same weight to each site and the other with a weight proportional to the size of the dataset) are evaluated to investigate the consistency of the results in a multi-site model optimization. The five adjustment measures were used: correlation coefficient (r), root mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), mean bias error (MBE) and maximum bias error (Emax). Our results indicate that, with some restrictions regarding the choice of objective function, multi-site calibration is possible and produces consistent results across sites. We recommend that the choice of objective function should be based on the intended use of the model. On a short time scale we recommend the site-weighted method using mean absolute error as adjustment measure. For longer times scales we recommend using the site-weighted maximum bias error. For this research the priority is long-term simulations, so we applied the site-weighted method using maximum bias error to generate estimates of NPP in cerrado and grassland in South America. The calibrated parameters were applied in Algorithm RATE (based on the SITE vegetation model), which is an algorithm for regional monitoring of the carbon fixation rate using land cover, LAI and FAPAR datasets derived from a remote sensing satellite (MODIS) product. The results indicate a pronounced seasonal variability in monthly NPP estimates for cerrado and grassland in 2010 linked to the climate variability of the region - periods of high and low precipitation and temperature driving seasonal differences in carbon fixation. Interannual NPP variability was higher for grassland than cerrado, perhaps indicating that grassland is more susceptible to climate variability. There were also clear differences between MODIS NPP estimates and those of RATE, indicating that further studies are urgently needed to rigorously validate these alternative strategies to estimate NPP. Diante de cenários de mudanças climáticas globais, estudos usando modelos de superfície terrestre são necessários para avaliar o impacto do aumento do CO2 e o balanço de carbono em ecossistemas terrestres. Entretanto, uma boa calibração desses modelos é importante para que esses modelos representem da melhor maneira possível os processos do ecossistema. Geralmente, os modelos são calibrados para um sítio e, então, os mesmos parâmetros calibrados são aplicados para outros sítios com o mesmo tipo funcional de planta. Tendo em vista o exposto, este trabalho possui dois objetivos principais: Inicialmente, realizar uma calibração multi-sítio, utilizando dois sítios simultaneamente, e avaliar seu desempenho; E, então, fazer a aplicação dos resultados da calibração multi-sítio para gerar estimativas de produção primária líquida (NPP, em inglês) em ecossistemas de cerrado e pastagem na América do Sul. Para investigar a calibração multi-sítio, foi realizada a calibração da troca líquida do ecossistema (NEE, em inglês) para dois sítios de pastagem na Amazônia, analisando 20 diferentes funções objetivo, sendo cinco medidas de ajuste sujeitas a quatro métodos de otimização duas otimizações individuais (uma para cada sítio) e duas otimizações multi-sítio (uma com o mesmo peso para cada sítio e a outra com peso proporcional ao tamanho da série de dados). As cinco medidas de ajuste utilizadas foram: coeficiente de correlação (r), raiz do erro quadrado médio (RMSE), erro médio absoluto (MAE), erro de viés médio (MBE) e erro de viés máximo (Emax). Os resultados da calibração do modelo indicam que com algumas restrições da escolha da função objetivo, a calibração multi-sítio é possível e produz resultados consistentes entre os sítios. A escolha da função objetivo deve ser baseada na intenção de uso do modelo. Para modelos de simulações de curto prazo é recomendado o uso do método de otimização com o mesmo peso para cada sítio, usando o MAE como medida de ajuste. Por outro lado, para modelos de simulações de longo prazo, o método indicado é o mesmo peso para cada sítio, utilizando o Emax como função objetivo. Visto que neste trabalho a prioridade são simulações de longo prazo, aplicou-se o método do peso para cada sítio utilizando o Emax como função objetivo para gerar estimativas de NPP em ecossistemas de cerrado e pastagem para a América do Sul. Os parâmetros calibrados foram aplicados no Algoritmo RATE (baseado no modelo SITE), que é um algoritmo de monitoramento regional da taxa de fixação de carbono usando dados de sensoriamento remoto derivados dos produtos do MODIS (cobertura do solo, índice de área foliar e fração absorvida da radiação fotossinteticamente ativa). Os resultados indicam uma pronunciada variabilidade sazonal nas estimativas mensais de NPP para o cerrado e para a pastagem no ano de 2010, mostrando também uma conexão da variabilidade de NPP com a variabilidade climática da região períodos de alta e baixa precipitação e temperatura controlando diferenças sazonais na fixação de carbono. A variabilidade interanual de NPP foi maior para a pastagem do que para o cerrado, talvez indicando maior suscetibilidade da pastagem à variabilidade climática. Os resultados apresentaram uma clara diferença entre as estimativas de NPP do RATE e do MODIS, indicando que mais estudos são necessários para validar estratégias alternativas de estimar NPP.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Several climate models predict more intense and frequent droughts in the Amazon region due to increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Consequently, the carbon stocks of forests in the Amazon may be substantially reduced, since that severe droughts tend to i) increase the mortality and ii) reduce the growth of trees. The objective of this research was to quantify the carbon balance of forests in the Amazon after the events of 2010 and 2005 drought. To do so, we used the model ecosystem CARLUC (Carbon and Land- Use Change), which simulates the flow of carbon between the 14 different components of the forest (leaves, stems, roots, etc.). Forest and the atmosphere. In particular, we simulated carbon losses caused by droughts in 2005 and 2010 and evaluated the time to recovery of carbon stocks. The results showed a strong association between sites under water stress and those with substantial reductions (5.3 mg of above-ground biomass) in carbon stocks. The recovery period relating to drought of 2005 and 2010 for the entire Amazon basin was, on average, eight and ten years respectively. Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais Extratropical cyclones are very important to define global climate. These systems are responsable for the heat transport to poles, preventing the continuous cooling of the extratropical region. The preferential areas of these baroclinic systems are called "Storm Tracks". Cyclones are directly associated to zonal and meridional air or surface temperature gradients. In this context, the variability and changes in the Storm Tracks behavior at present climate and in A1B for global warming scenario are investigated by using the coupled climate model ECHAM5/MPI-OM for the period between 1981 to 2000 (PD), and for global warming (GHG) for the period between 2081 to 2100. The results shows that the climate model used reproduces the variables and the distribuition of ST with reasonable consistency, when compared to the ERA-40 reanalises.It may be concluded that the path of extratropical cyclones delivered by the A1B scenario of global warming shows substantial modification in the sense that the ST moves southward in respect present day position demonstrates that variations in sea ice cover and sea surface temperature play the role heading in the magnitude and preferential area of cyclonic activity in the future climate scenario. Os ciclones extratropicais são muito importantes para definir o clima global. Estes sistemas são responsáveis pelo transporte de calor para os pólos impedindo o arrefecimento contínuo da região. As áreas preferenciais destes sistemas baroclínicos são chamados de "Storm Tracks". Os ciclones são diretamente associados ao gradiente meridional e de temperatura. Neste contexto, a variabilidade e mudanças de comportamento dos Storm Tracks no clima atual e em um cenário de aquecimento global são investigadas por meio do modelo climático acoplado ECHAM5/MPI-OM no período entre 1981 a 2000 (PD) e para o aquecimento global (GHG) para o período entre 2081 para 2100. Os resultados mostram que o modelo climático usado reproduz as variáveis e a distribuição de ST com consistência razoável, quando comparado com o reanalises ERA-40. Os resultados para um cenário de aquecimento global A1B indicam que as trajetórias dos ciclones extratropicais sofrerão uma modificação na sua distribuição, deslocando-se mais ao Sul em direção ao pólo. Isso demonstra que as variações na cobertura de gelo marinho e da temperatura da superfície do mar foram determinantes na redistribuição da atividade ciclônica no cenário climático futuro.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior This work aimed to carry out the spectral classification of planted areas (coffee, sugarcane, corn, soybean and dry bean crops) by means of the decision tree classifier (DT), to analyze influence of the climate, soil and terrain relief on Coffea arabica plantations and change in the agricultural composition by means of the crops substitution index (SI). For the spectral classification of the planted areas, the algorithm (DT) and products of the TM sensor, aboard of the Landsat-5 satellite, were used. For an updated climatic zoning of Coffea arabica plantations, 1941-2009 climatic data sets were used. To analyze agricultural composition change, 1990-2008 census data, provided by the IBGE, were also used. Spectral classification by means of DT algorithm showed that the remote sensing image obtained by the Landsat-5 satellite, in four different years and specific times, allowed to map the areas occupied by the crops (coffee, sugarcane, corn, soybean, and dry bean) in the state of Minas Gerais. The planted areas, estimated by DT algorithm, presented a good correlation with the values observed by the IBGE, but there was a tendency to overestimate. When comparing the planted areas estimated via DT algorithm with those observed IBGE data coherence was verified in the results found and also supported by the literature. The Coffea arabica climatic zoning update was found to be very efficient in delimiting the climatically homogenous regions, for the potential coffee yield in the state of Minas Gerais. The methodologies to obtain an updated data set and processing of climatic zoning for Coffea arabica productivity and its suitability were shown to be technically acceptable compared to the zonings previously carried out in the state of Minas Gerais. The most outstanding crops in terms of area expansion were found to be sugarcane, coffee, soybean and dry bean, indicating that the state of Minas Gerais presented an important economic and relatively homogenous dynamism, not dependent exclusively on the performance of a single product. Thus, dissemination of the methodologies and technologies developed is recommended in order to monitor planted areas in the state of Minas Gerais. Neste trabalho realizou-se a classificação espectral das áreas plantadas (café, cana-de-açúcar, milho, soja e feijão) por meio do classificador árvore de decisão (AD), analisou-se a influência do clima, solo e relevo para o café arábica e a mudança na composição agrícola por intermédio do índice de substituição das culturas (IS). Para classificação espectral das áreas plantadas, empregou-se o algoritmo (AD) e produtos do sensor TM, a bordo do satélite Landsat-5. No zoneamento climático atualizado do café arábica, utilizaram-se dados climáticos de 1941 a 2009. Para a análise da mudança na composição agrícola, utilizaram-se dados de censo de 1990 a 2008, fornecidos pelo IBGE. A classificação espectral por meio do algoritmo AD, mostrou que as imagens de sensoriamento remoto obtida pelo satélite Landsat-5, em quatro diferentes anos e específicas épocas, permitem mapear as áreas ocupadas com as culturas (café, cana-deaçúcar, milho, soja e feijão) para o estado de Minas Gerais. Os valores das áreas plantadas, estimadas pelo algoritmo AD, apresentaram boa correlação com os valores observados pelo IBGE, porém houve uma tendência de superestimativa. Ao comparar as áreas plantadas estimadas via AD com o IBGE, verificou-se coerência nos resultados encontrados, com respaldo na literatura. A atualização dos dados para o zoneamento climático do café arábica mostrou-se eficiente na delimitação das regiões climaticamente homogêneas, quanto à capacidade produtiva da cultura do café no estado de Minas Gerais. As metodologias para a obtenção do banco de dados atualizado e processamento para a formação da aptidão climática, produtividade e aptidão geral mostraram-se tecnicamente aceitáveis em relação a zoneamentos já realizados no estado de Minas Gerais. Verificou-se que as culturas que mais se destacaram em termos de expansão de área foram cana-de-açúcar, café, soja e feijão, indicando que o estado de Minas Gerais apresentou dinamismo econômico importante e relativamente homogêneo, não dependendo exclusivamente do desempenho de um único produto. Recomenda-se assim que ocorra a difusão das metodologias e técnicas desenvolvidas para o monitoramento de áreas plantadas no estado de Minas Gerais.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Global agricultural lands are predicted to expand over the next few decades due to a combination of increasing global population, the need for increased food production, and exponential growth in crop-based biofuels production. The resultant changes in land use could, in turn, greatly impact biogeochemical and biogeophysical cycles across the globe. Therefore, representation of biofuel crops such as sugarcane should be integrated into the latest models to ensure that accurate simulations of the bidirectional feedbacks between the land surface and atmosphere take place. In this study, we present a new process-based sugarcane model, included as a module within the Agro- IBIS dynamic agro-ecosystem model, that can be applied at multiple spatial scales (from site to global). The model may be coupled to an atmospheric model, allowing the simulation of the bi-directional interactions between atmosphere and the sugarcane cropping system. It includes a series of equations and crop management parameters that differ from the standard formulations for annual crops. The model is evaluated against micrometeorological and biomass observations, obtained for one crop cycle (391 days) in northern São Paulo state (Brazil), and yield at a range of spatial scales. The results of the micro-meteorological validation suggest that the model produces robust simulations of seasonal and daily albedo fluctuations, dry biomass, and relationships between net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and atmospheric variables (temperature and relative humidity). At the site level, the model accurately simulated the intensity and variability of daily evapotranspiration (ET) for two consecutive crop cycles at an experimental site at Kalamia estate, northeast Australia. The model also accurately simulated the average yield for the four largest mesoregions (clusters of municipalities) in the state of São Paulo (Brazil), over a period of 16 years, with a relative bias of -0.68% to 1.08%. Finally, a simulation of the annual average sugarcane yield over 31 years for the State of Louisiana (U.S.) produced a low relative bias (-2.67%) but exhibited lower yiled interannual variability than the estimated yields. Considering the results of all validations, we conclude that the new model is able to accurately capture the relationship between yield and climate variability (temperature and precipitation), indicating that the module may be successfully used to forecast changes in sugarcane cropping systems and associated climate interactions. Previsões apontam uma expansão das terras cultivadas ao longo das próximas décadas devido a uma combinação do aumento da população global, com consequente necessidade de aumento da produção de alimentos, e do recente crescimento exponencial da produção de biocombustíveis baseados em cultura agrícolas. As alterações resultantes do uso da terra podem, por sua vez, impactar significativamente os ciclos biogeoquímicos e biogeofísicos ao longo do globo. Portanto, a representação de culturas agrícolas para produção de biocombustíveis, como a cana-de-açúcar, devem ser integradas em modelos de processos superficiais terrestres, possibilitando considerar nas simulações numéricas os feedbacks bidirecionais entre a superfície e a atmosfera. Neste estudo, nós apresentamos um novo modelo mecanicista de crescimento da cultura da cana-de-açúcar, incluído como um módulo dentro do modelo dinâmico de agro-ecossistema Agro-IBIS, que pode ser aplicado em múltiplas escalas espaciais (do local ao global). O modelo pode ser acoplado a um modelo atmosférico, permitindo a simulação das interações bidirecionais entre a atmosfera e o sistema de cultivo de cana. Esse novo módulo inclui uma série de equações e parâmetros de manejo agrícola que diferem das formulações para as culturas anuais pré-existentes. O modelo é avaliado contra observações micro-meteorológicas e de biomassa, obtidas para um ciclo da cultura (391 dias), no norte do Estado de São Paulo (Brasil), e para a produtividade agrícola em diferentes escalas espaciais. Os resultados da validação micro-meteorológica indicam que o modelo produz robustamente as flutuações sazonais e diárias do albedo, biomassa seca, e as relações entre troca líquida do ecossistema (NEE) e das variáveis atmosféricas (temperatura e umidade relativa do ar). Ao nível local, o modelo simulou com precisão a intensidade e a variabilidade diária da evapotranspiração (ET) durante dois ciclos consecutivos da cana-de-açúcar em um sítio experimental na localidade Kalamia, nordeste da Austrália. O modelo simulou com exatidão a média da produtividade da cana-de-açúcar para as quatro maiores mesorregiões produtoras (aglomerados de municípios) do estado de São Paulo (Brasil), durante um período de 16 anos, com viés relativo entre -0,68% e +1,08%. Finalmente, a simulação da produtividade média anual de cana para o Estado de Louisiana (EUA) produziu um viés relativo (-2,67%) baixo, mas apresentou menor variabilidade interanual do que a série de produtividade estimada. Considerando os resultados de todas as validações, podemos concluir que o novo modelo é capaz de capturar a relação entre a produção de biomassa e variabilidade do clima (temperatura e precipitação), indicando que o módulo pode ser utilizado com sucesso para prever alterações nos sistemas de cultivo de cana e as respectivas interações com o clima.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior In this work we calibrated the land-surface model IBIS estimating the parameters based on the optimization of net radiation (Rn) partitioning between sensible heat flux (H) and latent heat flux (LE). We used micrometeorological databases, measurements of soil samples properties and soil moisture and temperature obtained from the site of the National Forest of Tapajós km83 (FNT-K83). The methodology is based on the premise that the partition between the heat fluxes is a function of water stress, which depends on the depth and vertical distribution of the root system. It is the first time that it is used boundary conditions, associated with soil physical properties, with different levels of uncertainties and the errors introduced by these uncertainties. The simulations run by IBIS were organized into three groups according to the different types of data and boundary conditions, with different levels of uncertainty. In the first group, the model operates in normal mode, simulating LE using data from physical properties of soil estimated from global database of soil properties. In these simulations group, the uncertainty is greater because the soil physical properties are determined by tables of representative values for each type of soil granulometrial. In the second group, the model uses soil parameters obtained locally from soil water retention curve samples collected in the FNT-K83 to simulate LE. In this group, the uncertainty is reduced because the soil properties are determined locally. In the third group, the model simulates LE forcing conditions with soil temperature and soil moisture data measured in the experimental site FNT-K83. In this group, the uncertainty is smaller, because the model uses real data of soil moisture. For the calibration procedure each group of simulations obtained ZR and β2 parameters that optimized the statistics of the correlation coefficient (ρ) and the slope of the linear regression line between the simulates and observed data (α), and the minimization of the mean absolute error (MAE), the maximum bias (Bmáx) and the objective function (F(ZR,β2)). Before starting the calibration itself, a sensitivity analysis of the modelsimulated was performed for ZR and β2 parameters. In this analysis, it was observed in all simulations groups that the IBIS is sensitive to ZR and β2 parameters, except in the third group of simulations that showed no sensitivity to β2 parameter. After the sensitivity analysis was performed, a calibration procedure was performed involving around 120 simulations, for all groups of simulations that used different boundary conditions. The new set of parameters calibrated for each group of simulations, presented different results. The calibrated parameters using data from physical properties of soil estimated from the global database of soil properties were ZR = 4 m and β2 = 0,999, while the calibrated parameters for the simulations that used soil parameters obtained locally from the soil water retention curve samples, were ZR = 30 m e β2 = 0,999, whereas the calibrate parameters for simulations that uses soil temperature and soil moisture data measured in the experimental site FNT-K83, were ZR = 3 m e β2 = 0,999. In general, the best estimated parameters are ZR= 30 m e β2 = 0,999 for FNT-K83. The analysis of the errors introduced by the boundary conditions related to soil physical properties showed that the choice of boundary conditions influence the volumetric soil water content profile simulated by IBIS, therefore, the amount of water available for the processes of evaporation, transpiration and consequently the partition of Rn into H and LE. These analyses indicate that the boundary condition that produces small errors is that use local data of temperature and moisture soil profiles to run the model. However, these data sets are scarce, restricted to some experiments and localities. Thus, the boundary condition using soil parameters obtained from soil samples collectedlocally would be the best option because it produces satisfactory results and can be easily obtained at the experimental site. The conclusions and difficulties in this work encountered duringimplementation have important implications. Firstly, it is probably a real requirement to understand better the root system on general ecossystems. This would involve, for example, more measurements of depth and distribution of the root system characteristics to validate the estimation of these parameters. Secondly, the creation of a protocol for measurements in fieldexperiments, those standardize some basic measurements such as soil samples, which could be used to estimate soil parameters to be used by models. Neste trabalho utilizaram-se medidas micrometeorológicas, amostras de solo e medidas de umidade e temperatura do solo coletadas no sítio experimental da Floresta Nacional do Tapajós K83 (FNT-K83) para calibrar o modelo de superfície terrestre, o IBIS, a fim de estimar os parâmetros ZR e β2 através da otimização da partição do saldo de radiação (Rn) entre o fluxo de calor sensível (H) e o fluxo de calor latente (LE). A metodologia se baseia na premissa que esta partição é função do estresse hídrico, o qual depende da profundidade e da distribuição vertical do sistema radicular. O diferencial deste trabalho é o uso de condições de contorno, associadas às propriedades físicas do solo, com diferentes níveis de incertezas e os erros introduzidos por essas incertezas também são analisados no presente trabalho. As simulações realizadas pelo IBIS foram organizadas em três grupos, de acordo com os diferentes tipos de dados e condições de contorno, com diferentes níveis de incerteza. No primeiro grupo, o modelo opera no modo normal, simulando LE utilizando dados das propriedades físicas do solo estimadas através de um banco de dados global de granulometria dos solos. Neste grupo de simulações, a incerteza é maior, pois as propriedades físicas do solo são determinadas por meio de tabelas com valores representativos para cada tipo granulometrial de solo. No segundo grupo, o modelo utiliza parâmetros de solo obtidos localmente a partir da curva de retenção de água no solo através de amostra coletada na FNT-K83 para simular LE. Neste grupo, a incerteza é reduzida, pois as propriedades físicas do solo são determinadas localmente. No terceiro grupo, o modelo simula LE forçando as condições de solo com dados de temperatura e umidade do solo, medidos no sítio experimental FNT-K83. Neste grupo, a incerteza é menor, pois são utilizados dados reais de umidade do solo. Para o procedimento de calibração, para cada grupo de simulações foram obtido os parâmetros ZR e β2, que otimizavam as estatísticas dos coeficientes de correlação (ρ) e de inclinação da reta de regressão entre os dados observados e simulados (α), e a minimização do erro absoluto médio (MAE), do viés máximo (Bmáx) e da função objetivo (F(ZR,β2)). Antes de iniciar o processo de calibração foi realizada uma análise de sensibilidade dos resultados simulados pelo modelo aos parâmetros ZR e β2. Nesta análise, foi observado nos três grupos de simulações que o IBIS apresentou sensibilidade ao parâmetro ZR e β2, exceto o terceiro grupo de simulações que não apresentou sensibilidade à β2. Posteriormente, foi realizado um procedimento de calibração envolvendo cerca de 120 simulações para os três grupos de simulações envolvendo diferentes condições de contorno. O novo conjunto de parâmetros, calibrados para cada grupo de simulações, apresentaram valores distintos. Os parâmetros calibrados utilizando o banco de dados global de granulometria do solo, foram ZR = 4 m e β2 = 0,999, enquanto que os parâmetros calibrados para as simulações que utilizaram amostras de solo coletadas localmente, foram ZR = 30 m e β2 = 0,999, já os parâmetros calibrados para as simulações que usaram os dados de temperatura e umidade do solo, foram ZR = 3 m e β2 = 0,999. Em geral, os parâmetros estimados são ZR = 30 m e β2 = 0,999 para a FNT-K83. Já as análises dos erros introduzidos pelas condições de contorno, relacionadas às propriedades físicas do solo, mostraram que a escolha dessas condições de contorno influencia o perfil de umidade volumétrica do solo simulado pelo IBIS, por conseguinte, a quantidade de água disponível para os processos de transpiração e evaporação, conseqüentemente, modificando a partição de Rn em H e LE. Estas análises indicam que a melhor condição de contorno, a que produz menores erros, seria a que utiliza dados observados do perfil de temperatura e umidade do solo para alimentar o modelo. Porém, esses dados são escassos, restritos a alguns experimentos e localidades. Com isso, a condição de contorno que utiliza parâmetros de solo obtidos a partir de amostras de solo coletadas localmente, seria a melhor opção, pois produz resultados satisfatórios e podem ser obtidas facilmente no local do experimento. As conclusões obtidas no presente trabalho e as dificuldades encontradas durante sua execução têm importantes implicações. Em primeiro lugar, provavelmente é real a necessidade de compreender melhor o sistema radicular nos ecossistemas em geral. Isto envolveria, por exemplo, mais medições e especificações da profundidade e distribuição do sistema radicular para validar as estimativas destes parâmetros. Em segundo lugar, a criação de um protocolo de medições em experimentos de campo, que padronizasse nestes experimentos algumas medições básicas, como amostras de solo, que poderiam ser utilizadas para estimar parâmetros do solo para serem utilizados pelos modelos.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior The global thermohaline circulation (THC) is the transport of ocean water masses caused by differences in the sea water density due to variations in temperature and salinity. Studies have shown that increased precipitation in high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere and the sea ice melting of the Arctic region generates a freshwater flow of in the North Atlantic which is able to shutoff the formation of deep water and hence desintensifies the THC. Considering the above, this study investigates the anomalous pattern of the oceanic and atmospheric circulation by introducing an increase of 1 Sverdrup (Sv) (1 Sv = 106m3s-1) of freshwater into the North Atlantic, based on simulations performed with the LOVECLIM model. The results show that the weakening of the THC leads to strong cooling in the North Atlantic region whereas the extratropical Southern Hemisphere warms. The weakening of the THC also changes the patterns of atmospheric circulation, inducing a reduction in the subtropical jet speed due to the smooth thermal gradient between the equator and the southern hemisphere polar region. Furthermore, the intertropical convergence zone moves southwards and changes the precipitation regime of the north and the northeastern part of Brazil. The reduction of the THC also leads to changes in the baroclinic instability in the middle and high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere. A Circulação Termohalina Global (CTG) consiste no transporte de massas d água oceânicas associado a diferenças na densidade da água do mar devido a variações de temperatura e salinidade. Estudos têm demonstrado que o aumento da precipitação em altas latitudes do Hemisfério Norte e o derretimento do gelo da região do Ártico podem gerar um fluxo de água doce no Oceano Atlântico Norte, capaz de interromper a formação de água profunda e, conseqüentemente, reduzir a CTG. Diante do exposto, o objetivo do trabalho é investigar o comportamento anômalo das circulações oceânica e atmosférica devido a um aumento de 1 Sverdrup (Sv) (1 Sv = 106m3s-1) no transporte de água doce no Atlântico Norte, com base em simulações realizadas com um modelo climático acoplado (LOVECLIM). Os resultados demonstram que o enfraquecimento da CTG provoca um forte resfriamento no Atlântico Norte enquanto que a região extratropical do Hemisfério Sul aquece. A inibição da CTG também muda os padrões da circulação atmosférica, se observa uma redução na corrente de jato subtropical devido o menor gradiente térmico entre o equador e a região polar austral. Além disso, a zona de convergência intertropical desloca-se para sul alterando o regime de precipitação das regiões norte e nordeste do Brasil. Por outro lado existe um enfraquecimento da instabilidade baroclínica nas latitudes médias e altas do Hemisfério Sul.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Terrestrial ecosystems are a key component for the study of Earth climate. There are evidences that land surface processes affect climate and weather in a range of time scales, from seconds to million of years. Land surface models (LSMs) are important tools for research on climatic simulations and weather prediction, generally working coupled to general circulation models, and acting as sub models calculating the fluxes throughout the biosphere- atmosphere interface. To obtain good LSMs simulations for a given region, it is necessary to optimize the parameters and calibrate the model against observed data for the region of study. The main objective of this work is to develop a calibration methodology that allow to calibrate all processes simulated by the model Integrated Biosphere Simulator (IBIS). The study is based on systems hierarchy and on the calibration of all IBIS simulated variables. The calibration is performed at temporal hierarchy order, from the fastest process (radiative fluxes) to the slowest process (carbon allocation). We proposed a relative efficiency index, D, to evaluate the multiobjective and hierarchical calibrations, based on single objective calibrations of each simulated variable. The single objective calibrations are considered the best possible ones, and are used as a reference to evaluate the proposed method. Initially, we develop a sensitivity analysis (SA) that efficiently select the most important parameters for each model output. The SA is based on the Morris method, with modifications in the sensitivity calculations, to adjust the method to work with LSMs. Then, we develop a software for multiobjective automatic calibration of the IBIS model, called Optis. Optis is based on the multiobjective genetic algorithm NSGA-II (Nondominated Sorted Genetic Algorithm II). This software allows the adjustment of multiple statistics and many model outputs simultaneously. Finally, we proposed a hierarchical methodology for LSM calibration, that performs the calibration of all processes simulated by the model. The SA is efficient to select only the most important model parameters to be considered in calibration, thus eliminating out of the search process those parameters with low influence on model output. Optis was effective to solve all the multiobjective calibration tests performed, reaching more than 90% of the efficiency obtained by the single objective calibration. Optis also is efficient in the use of computational resources, with total efficiency in the code parallelization. The hierarchical procedure proposed was tested in two experimental sites in the Amazon rainforest, Flona Tapajós and Sinop. In both sites, the procedure demonstrated to be efficient in calibrating all the model processes, with D greather than 0.80 in both sites. This calibration methodology allows a more realistic calibration of the model, as all simulated variables are optimized. Os ecossistemas terrestres são um componente chave no estudo do clima do planeta. Existem fortes evidências de que a superfície terrestre influencia o tempo e o clima em várias escalas de tempo, de segundos a milhões de anos. Os modelos de ecossistemas terrestres (LSMs, do inglês Land Surface Models) são ferramentas importantes para a pesquisa com simulações climáticas e para previsão do tempo, funcionando geralmente acoplados a modelos de circulação geral atmosférica, atuando como submodelos que calculam os fluxos através da interface biosfera-atmosfera. Para se obter boas simulações com os LSMs para determinada região, é preciso otimizar seus parâmetros e calibrar o modelo de acordo com os dados observados na região de estudo. O principal objetivo deste trabalho é desenvolver uma metodologia que permita calibrar todos os processos simulados pelo modelo Integrated Biosphere Simulator (IBIS). A metodologia se baseia na hierarquia dos sistemas ambientais para calibrar sucessivamente todas as variáveis simuladas pelo IBIS. A calibração ocorre em ordem crescente de hierarquia temporal, dos processos mais rápidos (fluxos radiativos) até os processos mais lentos (alocação de carbono). Foi proposto um índice de desempenho relativo, D, para avaliar as calibrações multiobjetivo e hierárquica do modelo em relação às calibrações mono-bjetivo independentes de cada variável. As calibrações mono-objetivo são consideradas as melhores calibrações possíveis, e as comparações entre as duas calibrações fornecem um bom indicador da eficiência do método de calibração proposto. Através da calibração hierárquica de todos as variáveis simuladas, espera-se obter um modelo que simule de forma consistente todos os processos nele representados. Em primeiro lugar, foi desenvolvida uma análise de sensibilidade (AS) para selecionar, de forma eficiente, os parâmetros mais importantes para cada saída do modelo. A AS é baseada no método de Morris, com modificações no cálculo do índice de sensibilidade para adequar o método ao uso com LSMs. Em seguida, foi desenvolvido um programa para calibração automática multiobjetivo do modelo IBIS, chamado Optis, baseado no algoritmo genético multiobjetivo NSGA-II (Nondominated Sorted Genetic Algorithm II). Esse algoritmo permite ajustar múltiplas estatísticas e várias saídas do modelo simultaneamente. Finalmente, foi proposta uma metodologia de calibração hierárquica para LSMs, que executa a calibração de todos os processos simulados pelo modelo. A AS foi eficiente ao selecionar os parâmetros mais importantes do modelo a serem considerados na calibração, eliminando do processo de busca aqueles parâmetros com influência desprezível nas saídas do modelo. O programa Optis foi eficaz em solucionar os problemas de calibração multiobjetivo nos testes desenvolvidos, atingindo mais de 90% do desempenho obtido na calibração mono-objetivo. O Optis também se mostrou eficiente no uso de recursos computacionais, com 100% de eficiência na paralelização do código. O procedimento hierárquico proposto foi testado em dois sítios da floresta Amazônia, Flona de Tapajós e Sinop. Em ambos os sítios, o procedimento hierárquico se mostrou eficiente em fazer uma calibração geral do modelo, atingindo um D maior que 0,8 em ambos os sítios. Essa metodologia de calibração permitiu uma calibração mais realista do modelo, pois todas as variáveis simuladas foram otimizadas.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Studying and monitoring the vegetation - forest, savannah or other types - is important to understand the current climatic standard. Dynamical vegetation models (DVM) are useful tools in biome studies as they are based on physical principles as well as on initial and boundary conditions, therefore can obtain evidence of the influence of factors on the modeled environment, predict future vegetation behavior and, in association with other models, make predictions about vegetation future influence on climate or about the effect of climate change on vegetation. In particular, reflectance models are part of DVMs. Some studies have attempted to identify, canopy elements on the response of the vegetation cover albedo, the effect of obtaining the best parameters configuration. However, the reflectance study for electromagnetic spectrum narrower bands shows further features of the studied objects. Important features are estimated from the response of specific bands vegetation reflectance. Therefore, the objective of this thesis was to add three bands - red, near infrared and blue, corresponding to the bands 1, 2 and 3 of the sensor MODIS, onboard the TERRA and AQUA satellites, into the IBIS model - Integrated Biosphere Simulator, observe the canopy reflectance sensitivity to architectural and optical parameters, and calibrate these parameters according to the surface reflectance products and vegetation index from MODIS for the Reserve Cuieiras (K34). The sensitivity analysis indicates a strong response to the upper canopy parameters. The parameters combination that minimizes the RMSE of EVI - Enhanced Vegetation Index (RMSE = 0.0245) are the slope of the upper canopy leaves up χ = 0.92, reflectance from the upper canopy leaves in the blue band blue−up ρ = 0.0162, red band red −up ρ = 0.0466 and near infrared band nir−up ρ = 0.4427. Estudar e monitorar a vegetação - floresta, cerrado ou outro tipo de cobertura - é de suma importância para se entender o padrão climático atual. Os Modelos de Dinâmica de Vegetação (MDV) são ferramentas úteis nos estudos de determinado bioma, pois são baseados em princípios físicos e em condições iniciais e de contorno, podendo então obter indícios dos fatores que influenciam o ambiente modelado, fazer previsões futuras do comportamento da vegetação e, associados a outros modelos, fazer previsões futuras da influência da vegetação no clima, ou da mudança do clima na vegetação. Em particular, os modelos de refletância fazem parte dos MDV. Alguns estudos têm sido feitos para identificar a influência dos componentes do dossel sobre a resposta do albedo da cobertura vegetal, obtendo a melhor configuração dos parâmetros a serem usados. Porém, o estudo da refletância para menores faixas do espectro eletromagnético indica mais detalhadamente as feições dos alvos estudados. Para a vegetação, importantes características são estimadas a partir da resposta da refletância de faixas específicas. Nesse aspecto o objetivo desse trabalho foi adicionar três bandas vermelho, infravermelho próximo e azul, referentes às bandas 1, 2 e 3 do sensor MODIS, a bordo dos satélites TERRA e AQUA, no modelo IBIS - Integrated Biosphere Simulator - observando a sensibilidade aos parâmetros óticos e arquitetônicos do dossel e calibrando esses parâmetros de acordo com os produtos de refletância de superfície e índice de vegetação do MODIS para a Reserva do Cuieiras (K34). A análise de sensibilidade indicou forte resposta para os parâmetros referentes à parte superior do dossel. A combinação dos parâmetros que minimizou o RMSE do EVI - Enhanced Vegetation Index (RMSEmin = 0,0245) foi a inclinação das folhas do dossel superior up χ = 0,92, refletância das folhas da parte superior do dossel na faixa do azul blue−up ρ = 0,0162, vermelho red −up ρ =0,0466 e infravermelho próximo nir−up ρ = 0,4427.

Vegetation fires are the second source of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. An important step to reduce the climate impact of these emissions is the investigation of the atmospheric susceptibility of a region for fire development (fire risk). This study aims to investigate the environmental susceptibility to fires, based on two fire risk models: the Haines Index (IH) and the Setzer Index (IS). The study is carried out with data from the ECHAM5/MPI-OM climate model and the NCEP reanalysis data, to calculate both indices during two periods: present day (1980- 2000) and climate projections for the end of the 21st century (2080-2100). The results demonstrate that the fire risk models accurately reproduced the areas with the observed vegetation fire as detected by satellite under actual conditions. A comparison between the results proposed by the IH and IS shows that the Setzer methodology intensified the maximum risk level, and under global warming (GW) conditions, there exist an increase in the atmospheric favorability to fire development in the Amazon region. This is associated with the drying of the atmosphere due to less precipitation and increase in temperature, especially in the central part of Brazil. As queimadas, a nível global, são a segunda maior fonte de emissões de gases de efeito estufa. Um passo importante para a redução dos impactos das queimadas é por meio de investigação da suscetibilidade que um determinado ambiente possui para a queima ou mesmo para o alastramento do fogo (risco de fogo). Diante da necessidade de se conhecer possíveis implicações das mudanças na circulação atmosférica, em um futuro próximo, pretendeu-se, neste trabalho, investigar a suscetibilidade do ambiente a ocorrência de queimadas, baseado em dois índices de risco de queimadas: Índice de Haines (IH) e Índice de Setzer (IS). Para tanto, dados de modelagem numérica do modelo ECHAM5/MPI-OM, e dados das reanálises do NCEP são empregados para os cálculos dos referidos índices em dois períodos: atual (1980-2000) e projeções climáticas para o final do século (2080-2100). Com base nos resultados, concluiu-se que os modelos de risco de fogo reproduziram bem as áreas com maior incidência de queimadas sob condições atuais. A comparação entre os resultados proposto pelo IH e o IS mostra que a metodologia de Setzer intensifica o nível de risco máximo, e sob condições de Aquecimento Global (AG) observou-se um aumento na área de risco em especial para a região Amazônica em ambos os conjuntos de dados. Isto resulta do maior secamento da atmosfera associada à escassez de chuvas e ao aumento da temperatura, em particular para a região Centro-Oeste do Brasil.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Changes in forests, croplands, water ways and the atmospheric composition throughout the world are occurring because of the need for food, fibers, water and housing for over 6 billion people. Croplands, pasturelands, forest plantations and urban areas have expanded in recent decades, accompanied by large increases in energy, water and fertilizer consumption and a considerable loss in biodiversity. Research has shown that land cover and land use changes have caused important modifications in the quantity and quality of water resources, in addition to changes in climate. This generally occurs through changes in the radiation balance at the surface, and in the partitioning of the radiation balance in sensible and latent heat fluxes, causing modifications in the atmospheric circulation and climate. This work aims at creating a historical database of land use for Amazonia, gheographycally explicit in grid, at a 5' x 5' spatial resolution, in the period 1940 - 1995, for climatic and hydrological studies. The first part of this work, and one of the most important, was to construct the municipal digital meshes of Amazonia in each year the agricultural census was accomplished in the period 1940-1995. The construction of the meshes allowed the calculation of the fractions of cropland, natural pasture and planted pasture inside each municipality, for each year of the census, by dividing the census cropland area in a certain year by the area of this municipality, according with its limits on that same year. In a similar way, the fractions used by natural pasture and planted pasture in each municipality were calculated. The second part was to calculate the proportions of each type of land use between 1995 and the years of census, for each comparable minimum area. And the third and last part was to reconstruct the patterns of land use for Amazonia multiplying the resulting maps of the second stage with two classifications of land use for 1995, based on satellite and census data, developed by Cardille et al. [Global Biogeochemical Cycles, 2002] and Ramankutty et al. [Global Biogeochemical Cycles, 2008]. The results showed that the databases of land use in Amazonia, for the period 1940-1985, show some similar patterns in the study area, for example in the states of Tocantins, Goiás and Mato Grosso, both in intensity as in the spatial distribution of agricultural activities. However, in another regions the two databases were different, mainly in the spatial distribution of the pixels with agricultural activities, such as in the states of Amazonas and Rondônia, where they differed, in intensity, and in distribution. When we compared the two databases of land use with the map of land cover produced by the Tropical Rainforest Information Center (TRFIC), based on Landsat images, it was observed that in most of the compared years, especially for State of Rondônia, the database based on Ramankutty et al. [2008] presented a larger number of pixels containing agricultural activities similar to the deforestation areas in the TRFIC maps, mainly along BR 364, area in that the deforestation was better represented in this database. However, when we compared the maps for the State of Pará, the two databases presented the same number of areas similar to the TRFIC maps. The databases constructed in this work have uncertainties related to the fact that they were created by the merge of two different observations systems. However, in spite of those uncertainties, these databases are the first attempt of reconstructing the historical changes of the cropland, natural pasture and planted pasture in Amazonia, using agricultural census data at municipal level. These historical databases will be useful to help to understand the causes of the climatic changes in Amazonia, as well as to investigate the impacts of the historical changes in the land cover and land use in the water resources and climate of Amazonia. Mudanças em florestas, cultivos agrícolas, vias fluviais e na composição da atmosfera, em todo o mundo, estão ocorrendo pela crescente necessidade de alimentos, fibras, água e moradia para mais de seis bilhões de pessoas. As terras cultivadas (pastagens e plantações) e áreas urbanas têm se expandido nas recentes décadas, acompanhadas por um grande aumento no consumo de energia, água e fertilizantes, juntamente com uma considerável perda de biodiversidade. Alguns estudos têm mostrado que as mudanças na cobertura e no uso da terra também podem afetar o clima. Isto geralmente ocorre por meio de mudanças no saldo de radiação à superfície, e na partição do saldo de radiação em fluxos de calor sensível e latente, causando modificações na circulação atmosférica e no clima. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo criar um banco de dados histórico de uso da terra para a Amazônia, espacialmente explícito em grade, numa resolução de 5 x 5 , no período 1940-1995, para estudos climáticos e hidrológicos. A primeira etapa deste trabalho, e uma das mais importantes, foi a construção das malhas digitais dos municípios da Amazônia para cada ano em que o censo agrícola foi realizado dentro do período de estudo. A construção das malhas possibilitou calcular as frações de área cultivada, pastagem natural e pastagem plantada dentro de cada município, para cada ano do censo, dividindo-se a área cultivada dada pelo censo em um determinado ano pela área deste município de acordo com seus limites nesse mesmo ano. De uma maneira semelhante, foram calculadas as frações utilizadas por pastagem natural e pastagem plantada em cada município. A segunda etapa foi calcular as proporções de cada tipo de uso da terra entre 1995 e os anos de censo, para cada área mínima comparável. E a terceira e última etapa foi reconstruir os padrões de uso da terra para a Amazônia, multiplicando-se os mapas resultantes da segunda etapa com duas classificações de uso da terra para 1995, baseadas em dados de satélite e dados de censo, desenvolvidas por Cardille et al. [Global Biogeochemical Cycles, 2002] e Ramankutty et al. [Global Biogeochemical Cycles, 2008]. Os resultados mostraram que os bancos de dados de uso da terra na Amazônia, para o período 1940-1985, mostraram-se bastante similares em algumas regiões da área de estudo, como por exemplo nos estados de Tocantins, Goiás e Mato Grosso, tanto em intensidade de atividades agrícolas quanto na distribuição espacial das mesmas. Porém, em outras regiões os dois bancos de dados foram distintos, principalmente na distribuição espacial dos pixels com atividades agrícolas tal como nos estados do Amazonas e Rondônia, onde diferiram tanto em intensidade, quanto em distribuição. Quando comparamos os dois bancos de dados de uso da terra com o mapa de cobertura da terra do Tropical Rainforest Information Center (TRFIC), baseados no Landsat, observou-se que na maioria dos anos comparados, especialmente para o Estado de Rondônia, o banco de dados com base em Ramankutty et al. [2008] apresentou um maior número de áreas de pixels contendo atividades agrícolas similares às áreas de desmatamento nos mapas TRFIC, principalmente ao longo da BR 364, área em que o desmatamento foi melhor representado neste banco de dados, tanto em intensidade quanto em distribuição espacial. Contudo, quando comparamos os mapas para o Estado do Pará, os dois bancos de dados apresentaram o mesmo numero de áreas similares aos mapas TRFIC. Os bancos de dados construídos nesse trabalho possuem incertezas relacionadas ao fato de que foram criados pela fusão de dois sistemas de observações diferentes, porém, apesar dessas incertezas, esses bancos de dados são a primeira tentativa de estimar as mudanças históricas das culturas agrícolas, pastagem natural e pastagem plantada na Amazônia, utilizando dados de censo agrícola em nível municipal. Esses bancos de dados históricos serão úteis para ajudar a entender as causas das mudanças climáticas na região amazônica, bem como a investigar os impactos das mudanças históricas na cobertura e no uso da terra nos recursos hídricos e clima na Amazônia.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico This thesis investigates how the climate feedback and the nutrient feedback interact to regulate the patterns in the regrowth of the Amazon tropical forest after a large-scale deforestation. The study is performed using the fully coupled biosphere-atmosphere model CCM3-IBIS. Initially, the model was validated against observed climate and vegetation dynamics and structure variables. The Amazon climate (annual mean and seasonality) is extremely well simulated for both precipitation and incident solar radiation. Vegetation cover patterns reproduce well the observed patterns. The simulated net primary production and respiration rates are within 5% and 16% of observed data, respectively. The performance of simulated variables that depend on carbon allocation, like net primary production partitioning, leaf area index and biomass, although good on a regional mean, is low when spatial patterns are considered. A better representation of these spatial patterns depends on the understanding of the spatial variation in carbon allocation and its relationship to environmental factors. To evaluate the rainforest regrowth two experiments were done. The first experiment considers different types of nutrient stress and a hypothetical full deforestation. The second experiment considers the most realistic type of nutrient stress and different deforestation scenarios, looking for a threshold of deforestation that could cause dangerous interference on the Amazon recovery. Results show that the reduction in rainfall is proportional to the amount of deforestation and is more drastic when the deforested area is higher than 40% of the original forest extent. In addition, this simulated precipitation reduction alone is not sufficient to prevent the rainforest regrowth. However, when the precipitation reduction is associated with a soil nutrient stress, a savannization process may start over northern Mato Grosso, no matter how much is deforested. This is concerning because this region has the highest clearing rates in Amazonia. The low resilience of the forest under nutrient stress indicates that northern Mato Grosso should be a major target for conservation initiatives. Essa tese investiga como as retroalimentações do clima e da disponibilidade de nutrientes no solo interagem na regulação dos padrões de recrescimento da floresta tropical amazônica após um desmatamento de grande escala. Nesse estudo foi utilizado o modelo acoplado biosfera-atmosfera CCM3-IBIS. Inicialmente, o modelo foi validado através de observações de variáveis climáticas e de dinâmica e estrutura da vegetação amazônica. O clima da Amazônia (média anual e sazonalidade) é muito bem simulado tanto para a precipitação quanto para a radiação solar incidente. Os padrões de cobertura vegetal representam bem os padrões observados. A produção primária líquida e as taxas de respiração simuladas diferem em 5% e 16% das observações, respectivamente. O desempenho das variáveis simuladas que dependem da alocação de carbono, como a partição da produção primária líquida, o índice de área foliar e a biomassa, é alto em uma média regional, mas é baixa quando são considerados os padrões espaciais. Uma melhor representação desses padrões espaciais depende da compreensão da variação espacial da alocação de carbono e sua dependência com fatores ambientais. Para avaliar a capacidade de recrescimento da floresta foram realizados dois experimentos. O primeiro experimento considera diferentes tipos de limitação nutricional e um hipotético desmatamento total. O segundo experimento considera o tipo de limitação nutricional mais realístico e diferentes cenários de desmatamento, com o intuito de encontrar um limite máximo de desmatamento que não causaria interferências prejudiciais na regeneração da floresta. Os resultados mostram que a redução da precipitação é proporcional à quantidade de desmatamento e é mais drástica quando mais do que 40% da extensão original da floresta é desmatada. Além disso, apenas a redução da precipitação simulada não é suficiente para impedir a regeneração da floresta secundária. Entretanto, quando a redução da precipitação é associada com uma deficiência nutricional do solo, um processo de savanização pode ocorrer sobre o norte do Mato Grosso, independente da extensão da área desmatada. Esses resultados são preocupantes, pois essa região tem as mais altas taxas de desmatamento da Amazônia. A baixa resiliência da floresta com deficiência nutricional indica que o norte do Mato Grosso deveria ser o alvo principal de iniciativas para a conservação.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Relative humidity (RH) air and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) have important role in agriculture, particularly in the sense of adapting a calendar of short-term agricultural activities such as pesticide application, daily evapotranspiration estimates for irrigation management, fire forecast, determination of leaf wetness duration etc. Minimum and maximum air temperatures of 18 conventional and 22 automatic weather stations were used to develop a predictive model of air relative humidity and vapor pressure deficit for the State of Minas Gerais. The objectives of this work were: a) to evaluate the applicability of physico-mathematical models to calculate (RH) and (VPD) from air temperature data in different Minas Gerais locations; and b) to analyze the spatialization of RH and VPD estimated by different methodologies, on hourly and daily basis. The Willmott s index of agreement, root mean square error, mean absolute error, seatter diagram and Pearson s correlation coefficient obtained from the moment-product method and linear regression analysis were used to evaluate how well the models fit the observed data. The models stood out for their effectiveness, mainly VPD and RH estimates, in comparison with data provided by the INMET automatic stations. The results of the models for vapor pressure deficit and relative humidity from conventional stations data were not very precise and there was strong indication of imperfect instrument calibration or even parallaxes errors and errors in values of daily relative humidity by inadequate reading and operation of the wet-bulb psychrometer ventilation system. Problems in conventional stations were also reported by other researchers using only minimum air temperature data in The United States. It was found an increase in the dependence of the variables air relative humidity and vapor pressure deficit on the altitude of the locations, for both conventional and automatic stations. The VPD3 and RH3 models showed, on average, better (r2) for all the conventional stations. The RH2, VPD1 and VPD4 models, in this order, showed better (r2) for all the automatic stations in Minas Gerais. However, the application of the studied models for estimating air relative humidity and vapor pressure deficit was proven to be also an important tools for the prediction of extreme situations of these variables. In addition, it was demonstrated that these methods for estimation of these meteorological elements can be used in locations where only maximum and minimum daily temperature data are available or even in sites with imperfect routine observations, considering the possible use of the models in estimating missing data of climatological series in the state of Minas Gerais. A umidade relativa e o déficit de pressão de saturação do vapor d água no ar têm papel importante na agricultura, no sentido de adequar, especialmente, um calendário das atividades agrícolas de curto prazo, como aplicação de defensivos agrícolas, estimativas da evapotranspiração diária voltada ao manejo de irrigação, previsão de incêndios, cálculo do número de horas de molhamento foliar etc. Assim, valores máximos e mínimos de temperatura do ar de 18 estações convencionais e 22 automáticas foram utilizados para desenvolver um modelo prognóstico da umidade relativa do ar e do déficit de pressão de vapor para o Estado de Minas Gerais. Em razão da importância do conhecimento desses dados, este trabalho visou atingir os seguintes objetivos: a) avaliar a aplicabilidade de modelos físicomatemáticos para o cálculo da umidade relativa (UR) e do déficit de pressão de saturação do vapor d água no ar (DPV) em diferentes localidades de Minas Gerais a partir de dados de temperatura do ar; e b) analisar a espacialização da UR e do DPV estimados por diferentes metodologias, em base horária e diária, para Minas Gerais. Foram utilizados, para avaliar a adequação dos modelos aos dados observados, o índice de concordância de Willmott, a raiz quadrada do erro do quadrado médio, o erro absoluto médio, o gráfico de dispersão e o coeficiente de correlação de Pearson, derivados do método do momento-produto e da Análise de Regressão Linear. Foram os destaques dos modelos as suas eficácias, principalmente, para estimativas do DPV e da UR, em comparação com as observações fornecidas pelas estações automáticas do INMET. Nas observações das estações convencionais, os resultados obtidos pelos modelos de déficit da pressão de vapor e umidade relativa do ar não se mostraram tão precisos e com fortes indícios de erros de calibração nos instrumentos atualmente instalados ou, mesmo, erros de paralaxe e até erros na obtenção da umidade relativa diária do ar pela leitura e operação inadequadas do sistema de ventilação do psicrômetro de ventilação do bulbo molhado. Foram constatados, também, problemas semelhantes, em estações convencionais, por diferentes pesquisadores, usando-se dados somente de temperatura mínima do ar nos Estados Unidos. Observou-se nas estações convencionais e automáticas aumento da dependência das variáveis: umidade relativa do ar e déficit de pressão de vapor com a altitude do local no Estado de Minas Gerais. Os modelos DPV3 e UR3 em média foram os que, respectivamente, apresentaram melhor (r2) em todas as estações convencionais. Os modelos UR2, DPV1 e DPV4, nessa ordem, foram os que exibiram melhor (r2) em todas as estações automáticas de Minas Gerais. Entretanto, a aplicação dos modelos estudados para o cálculo da umidade relativa do ar e do déficit de pressão de vapor demonstrou-se ser uma ferramenta de fundamental importância, também, para a predição de situações extremas dessas variáveis. Além disso, demonstrou-se que é possível a aplicação dos métodos para estimativas desses elementos meteorológicos em locais onde se dispõem somente de dados de temperaturas máximas e mínimas diárias ou, mesmo, em locais com falhas nas observações rotineiras, tendo em vista a possibilidade de utilização desses modelos na reconstrução de séries com dados perdidos ou faltantes, no Estado de Minas Gerais.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico The goal of this study was to compare nine databases of precipitation and four databases of incident solar radiation of the South America, considering the meridional variation, and the variation across the main continental watersheds (Amazonas, Tocantins, São Francisco, Orinoco, Paraná/Prata, in addition to the main Patagônia basins) and across the main vegetation types (tropical evergreen forest, tropical deciduous forest, woodland, savanna and grassland/steppe). For the precipitation assessment, it was used three products derived from the interpolation of the observed data (CRU; Legates and Wilmott; Leemans and Cramer), three databases based on the composition of rain gauges with remote sensing (TRMM, CMAP and GPCP) and three reanalysis databases (NCEP/NCAR, ERA-40 and CPTEC). For the incident solar radiation assessment, in addition to the reanalysis products, the product generated by the algorithm GL1.2 was also included in the comparison. This product estimates the incident solar radiation from the GOES satellite images. The results show that the annual average precipitation fields of the different products present differentiated behavior between themselves. For example, the CPTEC reanalysis does not represent the main regimes of precipitation in the continent, overestimating the precipitation in the interior of northeast Brazil and underestimating the precipitation in the rest of the continent. There is a substantial agreement among annual mean rain gauge interpolation products, particularly between the products CRU and Leemans and Cramer, which tend to better represent the rainfall regime of Northeast Brazil, for example. The combined rain gauge remote sensing products obtained similar patterns, mainly CMAP and GPCP. Both represent the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ), a band of higher precipitation that spans from northwestern South America to the southeast of Brazil, extending itself over the Atlantic Ocean. The monthly average values of the incident solar radiation products of the NCEP/NCAR, ERA-40 reanalyses and the GOES estimates were similar for all vegetation types and watershed, while the CPTEC reanalysis presented higher values. O objetivo deste trabalho é comparar nove bancos de dados de precipitação e quatro de radiação solar incidente para a América do Sul, considerando a variação meridional, a variação por diferentes bacias hidrográficas (Amazonas, Tocantins, São Francisco, Orinoco, Paraná/Prata, além das bacias dos rios da Patagônia) e pelos principais tipos de vegetação (floresta tropical, caatinga, cerrado e pampas). Para a precipitação foram utilizados três produtos provenientes da interpolação de dados observados (CRU; Legates e Willmott; Leemans e Cramer), três da composição de dados observados com sensoriamento remoto (TRMM, CMAP e GPCP) e três bancos de dados de reanálise (NCEP/NCAR, ERA-40 e CPTEC). Para a radiação solar incidente, além dos produtos de reanálise citados acima, também foi comparado o produto gerado pelo algoritmo GL1.2 que produz estimativas da radiação solar incidente a partir do conjunto de imagens do satélite GOES. Os resultados mostram que os campos de precipitação média anual dos diferentes produtos apresentam comportamento diferenciado entre si. Por exemplo, a reanálise do CPTEC não é capaz de representar os principais regimes de precipitação existentes no continente, demonstrando uma forte tendência em superestimar a precipitação no interior do nordeste brasileiro e subestimá-la na maioria das demais regiões. Nos produtos de interpolação de dados observados em superfície, verifica-se uma maior concordância na distribuição dos valores de precipitação média anual, principalmente entre os produtos CRU e Leemans e Cramer, que tendem a representar melhor os regimes de chuvas, como por exemplo, na região do bioma caatinga (nordeste do Brasil), onde o clima é semi-árido. Os produtos que combinam dados de estações pluviométricas com os de sensoriamento remoto mostram-se com valores bem próximos do esperado, principalmente o CMAP e GPCP. Ambos representam bem a Zona de Convergência do Atlântico Sul (ZCAS), que é a faixa de valores mais elevados de precipitação que abrange desde o noroeste do continente até o sudeste/sul do Brasil, estendendo-se até o oceano. Para a radiação solar incidente nota-se que os valores médios mensais dos produtos de reanálise do NCEP/NCAR, ERA-40 e as estimativas do satélite GOES se encontram bem próximos para todos os biomas e bacias estudados. Já a reanálise do CPTEC apresentou valores bem mais elevados para a radiação sobre a América do Sul, tanto para a média anual como nas médias mensais analisadas.

Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais Annual rainfalls data, provived by the Agência Nacional das Águas (ANA), were analyzed with objective of identifying climatically homogeneous data series using the statistical technique of "cumulative residues", starting from data of 78 meteorological stations network of the State of Minas Gerais. For all the climatically homogeneous areas, a reference station was chosen, and later, each reference station data series were analyzed against other rainfall stations within the same homogeneous climatic area. For all over the areas, it was chosen a reference station with the largest number of complete data series, and later, each reference data series was analyzed against the other data series of rainfall stations belonging to the same climatic area. Starting from the identification of statistically homogeneous rainfall data series, an attempt of reconstruction of the series was carried out, by filling of missing values. The "cumulative residues" technique was shown to be very efficient, even when the number of stations used for some climatically homogeneous areas was a limiting factor. After the data series reconstructions, for each station the inverse of the square of the distance method of interpolation (IDW) and the method of ordinary krigging (KG) were used, to analyze the annual precipitation in space for every year between 1942 and 2000. For the krigging algorithm, semi-variograms were adjusted, to verify the degree of space dependence (IDE), by means of spherical model. The IDE mean values found for all analyzed years were about 30.3%, which represent moderate space dependence. Both methods of interpolations employed were also evaluated based on cross validation test, in which it did supply the values of mean error (Em) and the coefficient of variation (ρf). The mean error average found in between 8.198 for the IDW method and 0.457 for the krigging. The coefficients of variation presented varied from 0.121 to 0.372 for IDW and 0.112 to 0.352 for krigging. The results showed that the geostatistic method of ordinary krigging was more efficient than the IDW method with the smallest mean errors (Em) and coefficients of variation (ρf). Os dados anuais de precipitação, fornecidos pela Agência Nacional de Águas (ANA), foram analisados com o objetivo de identificar séries climatológicas homogêneas, por meio de técnicas estatísticas de resíduos cumulativos a partir dos dados de uma rede de 78 estações meteorológicas do Estado de Minas Gerais. Utilizaram-se os resultados apresentados por Aspiazu et al. (1990), que delimitaram 10 regiões climaticamente homogêneas no Estado de Minas Gerais, para a análise de homogeneidade. Para todas as regiões foi escolhida uma estação de referência, e, posteriormente, cada série de referência foi analisada com as outras estações pertencentes à mesma região climática. As estações de referência escolhidas foram as que apresentaram maior número de dados completos dentro de cada região. A partir da identificação de séries homogêneas, foi feita a reconstrução das séries climatológicas, fazendo-se o preenchimento de falhas com dados faltantes. A técnica de resíduos cumulativos empregada mostrou-se eficiente, mesmo o número de estações utilizadas para algumas regiões climaticamente homogêneas ter sido um fator limitante. Depois do preenchimento de falhas, empregou-se o método de interpolação inverso do quadrado da distância (IDW), bem como o método de krigagem ordinária (KG), para posteriormente promover a espacialização da precipitação anual para cada ano entre 1942 e 2000. Com o método de krigagem, foram ajustados semivariogramas, para verificar o grau de dependência espacial (IDE), havendo predominância do modelo esférico. O valor médio do IDE encontrado para todos os anos analisados foi de 30,3%, que representa moderada dependência espacial. Ambos os métodos de interpolação empregados foram avaliados com base no teste de validação cruzada, que forneceu os valores de erro médio (Em) e o coeficiente de variação (ρf). A média do erro médio encontrada foi de 8,198 com o método IDW e 0,457 com o método de krigagem. Os coeficientes de variação variaram de 0,121 a 0,372 para IDW e 0,112 a 0,352 para krigagem. Os resultados evidenciaram que o método geoestatístico de krigagem ordinária se mostrou mais eficiente do que o método de IDW, tendo em vista os menores erros médios.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Albedo is defined as a ratio between reflected solar radiation and incoming solar radiation over a surface. It is a main factor that affects the terrestrial radiation balance and has been frequently considered in the global and regional climate studies. Amazon is one of planet s regions where the response of regional atmospheric circulation is more intense. Simulation studies using several models show that a conversion of tropical rainforest in pasturelands causes reduction in the local precipitation, which is mainly dependent of surface albedo changes. The objective of present work is to investigate the sources of spatial and temporal variation of an Amazon tropical rainforest surface albedo, using field measurements, modeling and satellite products; and to investigate the role of surface albedo changes, after Amazon tropical deforestation, in the regional climate. In this work it was used observed data from four forests (Caxiuanã, Cuieiras, Ducke and Jaru Reserves) and two pastures (Dimona and Nossa Senhora Aparecida) belonging to LBA (Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia) and ABRACOS (Anglo Brazilian Amazonian Climate Observation Study) projects. It was also used six different satellite systems: CG99, ERBE, SRB/ISLSCP2, UMD and MODIS white-sky and MODIS blacksky. For the simulation of Amazon tropical rainforest surface albedo the point IBIS (Integrated Biosphere Simulator) model and it coupled to CCM3 climate model was used. The results of this work show that: the main sources of variation of albedo in hourly and monthly scale are the vegetation cover and atmospheric transmissivity, and that the canopy wetness is an important source of variation in hourly scale and should be included in the models; that the simulated albedo show strong sensitivity to superior canopy parameters of leaf orientation and infrared reflectance and no sensitivity was found for the lower canopy parameters, consistent with the canopy structure; that an incorporation of canopy wetness in the radiative transfer calculation improve the results in a hourly scale, reducing the albedo during the hours with precipitation, but not in a seasonal scale, excluding the canopy wetness as a main source of the seasonal variability in tropical rainforest; that the different satellite systems present a considerable variation related to the field measured albedos, including great seasonal differences; that the precipitation anomalies can be explained by a linear relationship between radiative processes, where the changes in surface albedo and net radiation explain approximately 96% and 99% of the annual variation of precipitation and that the replacement of forest by soybean cropland affects more the regional climate than the conversion in pasture, probably due to the high value of soybean cropland albedo O albedo é definido como a razão entre a radiação solar refletida e a radiação solar incidente em uma superfície. É o principal fator que afeta o balanço de radiação terrestre e tem sido freqüentemente considerado em estudos do clima global e regional. A Amazônia é uma das regiões do planeta onde a resposta da circulação atmosférica regional a mudanças do albedo superficial é mais intensa. Estudos de simulação utilizando diversos modelos mostram que a conversão da floresta tropical em pastagem causa uma redução na precipitação local, a qual é principalmente dependente da mudança no albedo da superfície. O presente trabalho tem como objetivos investigar as fontes de variação espacial e temporal do albedo de uma floresta tropical amazônica, usando medições de campo, modelagem e produtos de sensoriamento remoto; e investigar o papel da mudança do albedo da superfície, após o desmatamento Amazônico, no clima regional. Neste trabalho foram utilizados dados de albedo observados em quatro áreas florestais (Reservas Florestais de Caxiuanã, Cuieiras, Ducke e Jaru) e duas pastagens (Dimona e Nossa Senhora Aparecida) pertencentes aos Projetos LBA (Experimento de Grande Escala da Biosfera-Atmosfera na Amazônia) e ABRACOS (Estudos de Observação do Clima na Amazônia Anglo-Brasileira). Também foram utilizados seis produtos de sensoriamento remoto: CG99, ERBE, SRB/ISLSCP2, UMD e MODIS céu-claro e MODIS céu-escuro. Para a simulação do albedo em floresta tropical amazônica foi utilizado o modelo IBIS (Integrated Biosphere Simulator) em duas versões: pontual e acoplado ao modelo climático CCM3. Os resultados deste trabalho mostram que: as principais fontes de variação do albedo em escala horária e mensal são a cobertura vegetal e transmissividade atmosférica, e que o molhamento do dossel é uma importante fonte de variação em escala horária e deve ser incluída em modelos; que o albedo simulado mostrou uma forte sensibilidade aos parâmetros do dossel superior de orientação da folha e de refletância no infravermelho e nenhuma sensibilidade aos parâmetros do dossel inferior, consistente com a estrutura do dossel; que a incorporação do molhamento do dossel nos cálculos de transferência radiativa melhora os resultados de simulação em escala horária, diminuindo o albedo durante as horas de precipitação, mas não em escala sazonal, excluindo o molhamento do dossel como uma fonte principal da variabilidade sazonal do albedo em florestas tropicais; que os diferentes produtos de sensoriamento remoto apresentaram uma variação considerável em relação aos albedos observados em campo, incluindo grandes diferenças sazonais; que anomalias de precipitação podem ser explicadas por uma relação linear entre os processos radiativos, onde mudanças no albedo da superfície e na radiação líquida explicam aproximadamente 96% e 99% da variação anual da precipitação e que a substituição da floresta por soja afeta mais o clima regional que a conversão em pastagem, provavelmente devido ao alto valor do albedo das áreas de soja

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico The Amazon is considered by many one of the most important areas of the planet, including extensive areas of tropical forest. However, the forest has been dramatically modified by the deforestation changes in the CO2 concentration night also affect the forest structure. This work aims at better understand the biosphere-atmosphere interaction in the Amazonian, including both the biogeophysical and the biogeochemical effects of this interaction. For this purpose, an atmosphere general circulation model (CCM3), coupled to the surface model (IBIS), was used. Seven simulations were run: control simulation (F), partial deforestation (D), radiative effects of CO2 (FR), radiative and ecological effects of CO2 (FRE), radiative and ecological effects of CO2 considering the feedback biogeochemical of the vegetation in the carbon cycle (FREB), partial deforestation with the radiative and ecological effects of CO2 (DRE), and partial deforestation with the radiative and ecological effects of CO2 considering the biogeochemical feedback of the vegetation in the carbon cycle (DREB). In these simulations, the effect of the deforestation modify the exchange of energy and water, with more significant changes in the dry season, showing an increase in the albedo in the deforested area, causing a decrease in the evapotranspiration and in the precipitation. The radiative effect of the increase in the CO2 concentration increased the availability of energy at the surface, increasing the sensible heat flux, temperature, and affecting the precipitation, but does not cause changes in the annual mean evapotranspiration. The increase of CO2 concentration alter the structure of the Amazonian forest, increasing LAI and the biomass of the Amazonian basin by 0.61 kg C.m-2, causing a decrease in the precipitation, evapotranspiration and in the latent and sensible heat fluxes. The biogeochemical effect of the vegetation growth, under conditions of total forest and partial deforestation, is noticed in a decrease in the atmospheric CO2 concentration, small changes in climate, showing a decrease in the radiation balance and temperature. A Amazônia é considerada por muitos uma das mais importantes regiões do planeta, abrangendo extensas áreas de floresta tropical. Entretanto, essa floresta vem sendo modificada dramaticamente, pelo desmatamento e pelas modificações na concentração de CO2 que também podem alterar a estrutura da floresta. Este trabalho visa entender melhor a interação biosfera-atmosfera na Amazônia, incluindo tanto os efeitos biogeofísicos quanto os biogeoquímicos desta interação. Para esta finalidade, utilizou-se um modelo de circulação geral da atmosfera CCM3 acoplado ao modelo de superfície IBIS. Foram realizadas sete simulações, isto é, simulação de controle (F), desmatamento parcial (D), efeitos radiativos do CO2 (FR), efeitos radiativos e ecológicos do CO2 (FRE), efeitos radiativos e ecológicos do CO2 considerando a retroalimentação biogeoquímica da vegetação no ciclo do carbono (FREB), desmatamento parcial com os efeitos radiativos e ecológicos do CO2 (DRE), e desmatamento parcial com os efeitos radiativos e ecológicos do CO2 considerando a retroalimentação biogeoquímica da vegetação no ciclo do carbono (DREB). Nessas simulações, o efeito do desmatamento modificou o balanço de energia e de água, com mudanças mais significativas na estação seca, mostrando um acréscimo do albedo na área parcialmente desmatada, levando a uma diminuição na evapotranspiração e na precipitação. O efeito radiativo do aumento na concentração do CO2 disponibilizou mais energia na superfície aumentando o fluxo de calor sensível, a temperatura, e afetando a precipitação, mas não ocasionou mudanças na média anual da evapotranspiração. Já o efeito ecológico do aumento da concentração do CO2 alterou a estrutura da floresta Amazônia, aumentando o IAF e a biomassa da bacia Amazônica em 0,61 kg C.m-2. Houve reduções nas taxas de precipitação, evapotranspiração e nos fluxos de calor latente e sensível. Ao ser considerado o efeito biogeoquímico do crescimento da vegetação, sob condições de floresta total e desmatamento parcial, percebe-se reduções na concentração atmosférica de CO2, pequenas mudanças no clima, mostrando uma diminuição do saldo de radiação, e na temperatura, causando um aumento na precipitação sob condições de floresta e reduzindo com o desmatamento sobre a bacia Amazônica.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Considerando que modelos que simulam fluxos entre a biosfera e a atmosfera utilizam muitos parâmetros e que alguns destes podem apresentar incertezas quanto às suas especificações ou não ter nenhuma medida de campo associada aos mesmos, faz-se necessário ajustar ou calibrar estes parâmetros, visando melhor representar as características biofísicas do ecossistema. Tradicionalmente, essa calibração é feita contra dados de um único sítio micrometeorológico. Neste trabalho utilizaram-se medidas micrometeorológicas coletadas nos sítios experimentais do projeto LBA para calibrar o modelo IBIS, a fim de determinar se a calibração obtida usando dados de um único sítio é representativa para todo um ecossistema. Os sítios usados foram Flona do Tapajós (km 83 e km 67), Reserva do Cuieiras (km34) e Rebio Jaru. O procedimento de calibração envolveu aproximadamente 95 simulações para cada um dos quatro sítios. Para cada sítio foi obtido um conjunto de parâmetros, β2 (distribuição de raízes finas), Vmáx (capacidade máxima da enzima Rubisco), m (coeficiente relacionado à condutância estomatal) e CHS (capacidade térmica dos galhos), que otimizava as estatísticas dos coeficientes de correlação (ρ) e de inclinação da reta de regressão entre os dados simulados e observados (α), e a minimização do erro relativo médio (ε) e da raiz do erro quadrado médio (RMSE). Antes de iniciar o processo de calibração propriamente dito foi realizada uma análise de sensibilidade dos resultados simulados pelo modelo a diversos parâmetros de entrada. Esta análise foi feita, apenas, para o sítio Flona do Tapajós km 67, onde foi observado que o RMSE mínimo foi atingido com o conjunto de parâmetros β2 = 0,98, Vmáx = 65 μmol m-2 s-1, m = 9 e CHS = 2,1.105 J m-2 °C-1. Após a calibração individual para cada sítio, de maneira geral, os resultados simulados pelo modelo se ajustaram bem aos dados observados em todos os sítios, representando bem a variabilidade horária do saldo de radiação (Rn), da radiação fotossinteticamente ativa incidente (PARin) e refletida (PARout), do fluxo de calor sensível (H) e latente (LE), e da troca líquida de CO2 do ecossistema (NEE) ou fluxo de CO2 (FC), exceto no caso de NEE para a Reserva do Cuieiras e, em alguns casos, de valores extremos de H e LE. A estimativa do fluxo de calor no solo (G), entretanto não melhorou com a calibração. A calibração mais satisfatória foi atingida no sítio da Flona do Tapajós km 67. Já o teste que utiliza melhores parâmetros obtidos em cada sítio nos outros sítios forneceu uma resposta inicial sobre a representatividade da calibração feita utilizando dados de apenas um sítio para todo um vasto ecossistema. Nesta análise percebeu-se que, ao se utilizar os parâmetros calibrados para um único sítio em todos os demais, introduz-se erros consideráveis que podem prejudicar a qualidade dos resultados simulados. Logo, concluiu-se que os dados coletados em um único sítio não são representativos para todo um ecossistema, mesmo que contíguo. A conclusão obtida no presente trabalho e as dificuldades encontradas durante sua execução têm importantes ramificações. Em primeiro lugar, é real a necessidade de adicionar outros parâmetros espacialmente explícitos aos modelos que simulam fluxos superficiais; em segundo lugar, a concepção e operação de redes de medições de fluxos, como o LBA e a FLUXNET, devem ser revistas, padronizando metodologias de modo a evitar diferenças sistemáticas entre os diferentes sítios. Considering that models simulating the fluxes between the biosphere and the atmosphere use several parameters, and that many of them may show uncertainties related either to their specifications or to the absence of field measurements associated to them, there is a need for calibrating these parameters to attain a better representation of the ecosystem s biophysical characteristics. This calibration is traditionally performed by using the data of a single micrometeorological site. This work, micrometeorological measurements collected in four experimental sites of the LBA project to calibrate the IBIS model, in order to determine whether the calibration based on data relative to a single site would be representative of a whole ecosystem. The sites Flona do Tapajós km 83 and km 67, Reserva do Cuieiras (km34) and Rebio Jaru were used. The calibration procedure involved around 95 simulations, for each one of the four sites. For each site, a set of optimum parameters were obtained: β2 (fine root distributions), Vmax (maximum capacity of the Rubisco enzyme), m (coefficient related to the stomatal conductance) and CHS (heat capacity of stems), that optimized the statistics of the correlation coefficient (ρ) and the slope of the linear regression line between the simulated and observed data (α), and the minimization of both the mean relative error (ε) and the root mean square error (RMSE). Before starting the calibration process itself, a sensitivity analysis of the model-simulated results was performed to several input parameters. This analysis was only performed for the site Flona do Tapajós km 67, where it was observed that the minimum RMSE was reached with the parameters β2 = 0.98, Vmax = 65 mol m-2 s-1, m = 9 and CHS = 2.1,105 J m-2 °C-1. After individual calibration for each site, the model-simulated results were well adjusted to the data observed in all sites, therefore satisfactorily representing the hourly variability of the net radiation (Rn), incident and reflected photosynthetically active radiation (PARin and PARout), sensible heat flux (H), latent heat flux (LE), and either the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) or the carbon flux (FC), except in the case of NEE for the Cuieiras Reserve, as well as the extreme values of H and LE in some cases. However, the estimate of the soil heat flux (G) did not improve with calibration. The most satisfactory calibration was reached at the site Flona do Tapajós km 67. Testing the best parameters obtained in each site in the other sites, provided an initial answer about the representativeness of the calibration performed with data of a single site for an entire ecosystem. In this analysis, however, it was observed that when the single-site calibrated parameters were used in other sites, significant errors were introduced, which might compromise the quality of the simulated results. Thus, it was concluded that the data collected in a single site are not representative for a whole ecosystem, even when it is contiguous. The conclusion drawn from the present work and the difficulties found during its execution have important ramifications. First, there is a real need for the addition of other spatially explicit parameters to the models simulating the surface fluxes; second, both the design and operation of flux measuring networks such as LBA and FLUXNET should be reviewed, as well as the standardization of methodologies should be accomplished in order to avoid systematic differences among the different sites.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Esta tese tem o objetivo de comparar a fração da radiação fotossinteticamente ativa absorvida (FAPAR) pela floresta tropical Amazônica obtida por medições de campo, e estimada por modelagem e sensoriamento remoto. Os dados de campo foram coletados na Floresta Nacional de Tapajós, localizada em Santarém (PA). O modelo utilizado foi o IBIS, que simula os fluxos no sistema solo- vegetação-atmosfera considerando duas camadas de vegetação. Foi utilizado o produto mensal da FAPAR do MODIS, sensor a bordo do satélite Terra. A FAPAR baseada em observações de campo foi calculada a partir da PAR incidente e refletida no topo do dossel, e incidente a 15 m de altura, e foi posteriormente corrigida para ser representativa de todo o dossel, sendo obtido o valor médio de 0,91. A FAPAR simulada pelo IBIS apresentou um valor médio de 0,76. A média da FAPAR estimada pelo MODIS foi 0,85. Os resultados baseados nas medições de campo são coerentes, pois encontram respaldo na literatura. Os valores obtidos pelo IBIS, apesar de inferiores, concordam com os obtidos pelo modelo CLM, porém a amplitude da absorção da PAR pelo dossel precisa ser melhor representada. This thesis has the objective to compare the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR) by an Amazonian tropical rain forest estimated based on in situ measurements, modeling and remote sensing. The field measurements were taken in the Tapajós National Forest, located in Santarém, State of Pará, Brazil. The model used was IBIS, which simulates the fluxes in the soil-vegetation-atmosphere system considering two vegetation layers. The monthly FAPAR product of MODIS was used. FAPAR based on field observations was calculated from incoming and reflected PAR measurements taken above the canopy, and downward PAR at a 15 m height, and was later corrected to be representative of the entire canopy. The annual mean value obtained was 0.91. FAPAR simulated by IBIS presented an average value of 0.76. The average FAPAR estimated by MODIS was 0.85. The in situ measurements are consistent with the literature. The values obtained by IBIS, although smaller, agree with the results of CLM, but the amplitude of PAR absorbed by vegetation needs to be better represented.

Dentre os elementos climáticos que mais interferem na vida humana, a precipitação é um dos que tem causado preocupação, tanto por sua falta como pelo excesso. Na área agrícola, muitos dos estudos relativos à precipitação têm buscado avaliar os efeitos advindos da sua ocorrência na erosão do solo. Neste caso, é de grande importância o conhecimento não só das informações relativas à lâmina precipitada, à duração e intensidade das chuvas mas, também, ao perfil da precipitação. As pesquisas sobre precipitação no Brasil têm-se restringido, na maioria das vezes, à previsão da lâmina total máxima ou da intensidade máxima provável, sendo esta feita com base em séries históricas, e apresentando especial interesse em projetos e obras de engenharia e no estudo de disponibilidade de água para o crescimento das culturas. Poucos trabalhos, no entanto, consideram o perfil correspondente a estas precipitações. A falta de modelos representativos tem forçado o uso de modelos desenvolvidos no exterior, contudo os resultados obtidos, muitas vezes, demonstram que eles não representam, adequadamente, as condições climáticas típicas do Brasil. Objetivou-se, com o presente trabalho, desenvolver um modelo para a geração de séries sintéticas de precipitação e do perfil instantâneo associado a estas para as condições climáticas encontradas no Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Inicialmente, utilizaram-se, no desenvolvimento do modelo, denominado CLIMABR, procedimentos utilizados em outros modelos pesquisados na 5 literatura sendo, posteriormente, procedidas as alterações necessárias para aumentar a eficiência do modelo desenvolvido para as condições de precipitação encontradas no Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Foram utilizados dados pluviométricos e pluviográficos de 11 estações da Fundação Superintendência Estadual de Rios e Lagoas SERLA e da Companhia LIGHT Serviços de Eletricidade S.A.. Na série sintética gerada, foram obtidos, para cada dia simulado, a precipitação total diária, a duração dos eventos, os valores padronizados da intensidade máxima instantânea de precipitação e do tempo de sua ocorrência ao longo dos eventos. Estes dois últimos valores obtidos no modelo foram utilizados para a obtenção do perfil de precipitação representado por uma função dupla exponencial que foi ajustada a cada evento diário. A comparação dos dados gerados pelo CLIMABR com as observações para o número de dias chuvosos, para as probabilidades associadas da cadeia de Markov, além da precipitação total diária, mostrou um bom desempenho para a estimativa destas variáveis. Entretanto a análise do desempenho relativo à geração das variáveis pertinentes à representação do perfil de precipitação demonstrou um desempenho inadequado. Within the climatic elements which mostly interfere in human life, precipitation is one of those which has caused worry, so much for its lack as for its excess. In the agricultural area, many studies related to precipitation have tried to evaluate the effects resulting from its occurrence in soil erosion. In this case it is of great importance the knowledge of not only the information relative to precipitation, the duration and intensity of the rains, but, also to the profile of the precipitation. The researches about precipitation in Brazil have been restricted, most of the times, to the prediction of maximum lamina total- or of the probable maximum intensity, this being done with the basis on historical series, and presenting special interest in projects and engineering projects and in the study of the availability of water for the growth of cultures. Even though few projects consider the corresponding profiles to these precipitations. The lack of representative models have forced the use of models developed abroad, despite the fact that the obtained results, many times, demonstrate that they do not adequately represent the typical climatic conditions in Brazil. The objective of the present paper is to develop a model for the generation of synthetic precipitation series and of the instantaneous profile associated to these for the climatic conditions found in the State of Rio de Janeiro. We initially utilized, in the development of the model, denominated 7 CLIMABR, procedures utilized in other models researched in literature being subsequently, proceeded the necessary alterations to increase the efficiency of the developed model for the precipitation conditions found in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Pluviometric and pluvigrafic data from eleven stations of the Fundação Superintendência Estadual de Rios e Lagoas SERLA and of Companhia LIGHT Serviços de Eletricidade S.A. were utilized. In the generated synthetic series, we obtained for each simulated day the total daily precipitation, the duration of the events, the standardized values of the instantaneous maximum precipitation and of the time of its occurrence throughout the events. These last two obtained values were utilized for the obtainment of the precipitation profile represented by a double exponential function which was adjusted to each daily event. The comparison of the data generated by CLIMABR with the observation to the number of rainy days, to the probabilities associated to the Markov chain, beyond the total daily precipitation, showed a good performance for the estimate of these variables. Meanwhile the analysis of the relative performance related to the generation of the variables pertinent to the representation of the precipitation profile demonstrated an inadequate performance.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Ensino Superior Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Esta pesquisa tem o objetivo de estudar a variação do albedo da superfície devido ao desmatamento da floresta tropical, e sua influência no padrão sazonal de chuva na Amazônia. Resultados do experimento de simulação de COSTA e FOLEY (2000) foram utilizados para representar as diferenças de precipitação, num cenário em que a floresta tropical nativa foi substituída por áreas desmatadas, cobertas de gramíneas. As médias de albedo, extraídas dos dados simulados, foram comparadas às médias observadas no campo, por CULF et al. (1996), para fins de validação de dados. Verificou-se que a diferença de albedo entre a pastagem e a floresta apresenta variação sazonal. Enquanto o albedo da floresta é praticamente constante ao longo do ano, apresentando pouca variação de acordo com o ângulo de elevação do Sol e com o molhamento foliar e do solo, o albedo da pastagem é mais sensível a estes fatores, apresentando grande variação ao longo do ano. Razões que podem explicar a maior variabilidade do albedo da pastagem incluem a altura ou a densidade da vegetação, a proporção de solo nu exposto ou a inclinação das folhas em relação à vertical. Verificou-se também que as variações sazonais da diferença de albedo estão associadas a flutuações em escala sazonal das anomalias de precipitação causadas pelo desmatamento. A resposta da circulação atmosférica e da precipitação sobre a área desmatada é proporcional ao incremento do albedo. This study aimed at the evaluation of the influence of the surface albedo change due to deforestation of the tropical forest on the seasonal pattern of rainfall in Amazonia. The results from the simulation experiment by COSTA and FOLEY (2000) were used to represent the precipitation differences in a scenario where the native tropical forest was replaced by deforested areas covered with grasses. The simulated albedo was compared to the data observed in the field by CULF et al. (1996), in order to validate the data. It was verified that the pasture and forest albedo present seasonal differences. While the forest albedo is more conservative throughout the year, presenting low variability according to the elevation of the sun, and the moisture of leaves and soil, the pasture albedo is more sensitive to these factors, presenting large variability along the year. The height or vegetation density, the proportion of the exposed bare soil or the predominantly vertical inclination of the leaves could probably explain the wider variability of the pasture albedo include. The seasonal variations of the albedo difference are associated to the fluctuations at seasonal scale of the precipitation anomalies caused by deforestation. The response of the atmospheric circulation and the precipitation on the deforested area is proportional to the increase in albedo.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Estudos sobre a climatologia das precipitações no Estado do Pará são essenciais para o planejamento das atividades agrícolas. A variação das precipitações anual, sazonal e mensal no Estado do Pará foi analisada com base em séries históricas de 23 anos (1976-1998) de dados diários de chuva. A análise foi realizada para 31 localidades do Estado do Pará, sendo os resultados representados em mapas, com a utilização de técnicas de Sistemas de Informações Geográficas (SIG). A análise de correlação entre os totais pluviométricos da estação chuvosa resultou na identificação de quatro áreas no Estado pluviometricamente semelhantes. A variabilidade das precipitações anual, sazonal e mensal foi caracterizada com base no coeficiente de variação e no índice de variabilidade interanual relativo. A variação desses coeficientes para a precipitação anual no Estado do Pará foi de 15 a 30%. As características mensais da estação chuvosa, em termos de início, fim e duração, foram determinadas utilizando-se o critério proposto por KASSAM (1979). A variação entre as datas de plantios precoces e tardios correspondeu aos decêndios identificados pelos dias julianos 309–319 e 353–363, respectivamente. Durante a estação chuvosa, os menores períodos secos ocorreram, geralmente, na região norte do Estado, enquanto os períodos secos mais prolongados se deram, principalmente, na porção sudeste do Pará. Studies about the climatology of precipitation in the state of Pará are essential for the planning of agricultural activities. The annual, seasonal and monthly precipitation variation was analysed based on historical series of 23 years (1976-1998) of daily rainfall data. The analysis was done for 31 localities of Pará state, with the results showed in maps using Gis techniques. The correlation analysis of total rainfall during the rainy season among the localities allowed the identification of four pluviometric homogeneous areas in the state of Pará. The precipitation variability or an annual, seasonal and monthly basis was characterized by the coefficient of variation and the indice of relative interannual variability. The variation of these coefficients for the annual precipitation in the state of Pará was is to 30%. The monthly characteristics of rainy season regarding the start, end and duration, were determined using the criteria proposed by KASSAM (1979). The variation between early and late planting dates were identified by the juliam days 309-319 and 353-363, respectivelly. During the wet season, the lower dry periods occurred generally in the North of the state, white the higher dry periods occurred mainly in the postion of southeast of Pará.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superio Este estudo enfoca a relação entre um ecossistema de floresta tropical e a atmosfera, através das técnicas observacionais e de modelagem numérica dos fluxos de CO 2, vapor d’água e energia. Para estudar a resposta de ecossistemas tropicais em relação às condições ambientais foi desenvolvido neste trabalho um modelo simplificado de ecossistema tropical (Simple Tropical Ecosystem Model - SITE). SITE, modelo pontual que usa um intervalo de integração (dt) de uma hora, se baseia fundamentalmente em modelos previamente desenvolvidos, principalmente o LSX, o LSM e o IBIS, sendo, entretanto, muito mais simples. O modelo é estruturado com uma camada de dossel e duas camadas no solo, onde a primeira camada é próxima a superfície do solo e a segunda até uma profundidade de 3,5 m. SITE é um modelo dinâmico que incorpora nove processos: balanço da radiação infravermelha no dossel, balanço de radiação solar, processos aerodinâmicos, fisiologia vegetal e transpiração, balanço da água interceptada pelo dossel, transporte de massa e energia, fluxo de calor no solo, fluxo de água no solo e balanço de carbono. O modelo SITE, utilizado para estimar os fluxos de CO 2, água e energia, é forçado com base nos dados médios horários das observações meteorológicas das variáveis de temperatura, balanço de radiação, precipitação, umidade, vento e CO2. Para a calibração do modelo e validação dos resultados, foram usados os fluxos de CO2, vapor d’água e calor sensível. Os fluxos foram medidos por sensores instalados em uma torre micrometeorológica de aproximadamente 56 m de altura na Reserva Florestal de Caxiuanã, no município de Melgaço-PA, usando a técnica da covariância de vórtices turbulentos. O modelo reproduziu satisfatoriamente a variabilidade horária dos fluxos de CO2 e vapor d’água, e simulou de maneira apropriada os balanços destes elementos em escala sazonal. The goal of this work was to study the relationship between an ecosystem of tropical forest and atmosphere, through measurement techniques and modeling of CO2, water vapor and energy fluxes. A simple tropical ecosystem model (SITE) was developed to study the response of tropical ecosystems related to the environmental conditions. SITE is a point model that uses an integration interval (dt) of one hour, and is based on models previously developed, mainly LSX, LSM and IBIS, being much simpler, though. The model is structured with a canopy layer and two soil layers, where the first layer is close to the soil surface and the second reaches 3.5 m of depth. xxv SITE is a dynamic model that incorporates nine processes: canopy infrared radiation balance, solar radiation balance, aerodynamic processes, canopy physiology and transpiration, balance of water intercepted by the canopy, transport of mass and energy, soil heat flux, soil water flux and carbon balance. The model SITE, used to predict the fluxes of CO 2, water and energy, is forced by hourly data of temperature, radiation balance, precipitation, humidity, wind and CO2. For calibration of the model and validation of the results, fluxes of CO2, water vapor and sensible heat were used. The fluxes were measured by sensors installed at a height of approximately 56 m in a micrometeorological tower at the Caxiuanã Forest Reserve, Melgaço County– PA, using the eddy covariance technique. The model reproduced well the hourly variability of the fluxes of CO2 and water vapor, and it simulated the balance of those elements in seasonal scale properly.
