This article seeks to follow in the footsteps of a statement by Borges, according to which all his books are deeply Jewish, trying to understand the meaning of this statement by articulating it to the Borgesian poetics, whose seminal and revealing example of our postulate is found in the symbolic reading of the poem The Golem. We maintain that the Borgesian poetics is of Jewish origin, since it is based not on verbal creation, nor on the original construction of plots and literary arguments, but, above all, on reading, commenting on works read, on the multiplication of comments and on the incessant need to repeat the narrative in other levels of meaning and forms, creating reports and readings that are distinguished by the “difference in the repetition” that create and affirm their alterity in the same Este artigo procura seguir as pegadas de uma declaração de Borges, segundo a qual todos os seus livros são profundamente judaicos, tentando compreender o significado desta afirmação articulando-a à poética borgeana, cujo exemplo seminal e revelador de nosso postulado acreditamos encontrar na leitura simbólica do poema O Golem. Sustentamos que a poética borgeana é de matriz judaica, uma vez que ela se baseia não na criação verbal, nem na construção original de enredos e argumentos literários, mas, sobretudo, na leitura, no comentário de obras lidas, na multiplicação dos comentários e na incessante necessidade de se repetir a narrativa em outros níveis de significado e formas, produzindo relatos e leituras que se distinguem pela diferença na repetição que se criam e afirmam na alteridade do mesmo

In If This Is a Man, by witnessing the death and survival in a Nazi concentration camp, Primo Levi describes the features of the many exterminated faces, yet remaining in the memory of the survivors, and also the camp, its form and operation. The camp’s physiology, with its internal rules, is closely linked to the quest of survival developed by prisoners. Two of its central features are the internal hierarchy among inmates and the functioning of the Exchange Market. Based on this second element, it is possible to examine the emergence of commercial trade at the camp, as an internal relational structure and alternative to the one imposed by Nazism. Starting from a Jewish viewpoint - more specifically, a Talmudic one - on issues related to ethics and trade, we will address how the commercial activity was characterized, as well as what purposes it served, given the extremely hostile context of the concentration camp. Em É isto um homem?, ao testemunhar a morte e a sobrevivência no campo de concentração, Primo Levi descreve desde o traçado dos muitos rostos exterminados, porém remanescentes na memória dos sobreviventes, até a forma do campo e seu funcionamento. Essa fisiologia do campo, com suas normas internas, está intimamente ligada à busca por sobrevivência desenvolvida pelos prisioneiros. Dois de seus traços centrais são a hierarquia interna entre detentos e o funcionamento da Bolsa de Trocas. A partir desse segundo elemento, é possível examinar o surgimento das trocas comerciais no campo como uma estrutura relacional interna e alternativa àquela imposta pelo nazismo. Partindo de uma ótica judaica - mais especificamente, talmúdica - sobre questões referentes à ética e ao comércio, pretendemos abordar como a atividade comercial se caracterizava, bem como a quais propósitos servia, diante do contexto extremamente hostil do campo de concentração.

The booklet titled Piyutim by Isaac P. Melul, from the collection of the Jewish Museum of São Paulo, a precious document not only for its main content – a collection of Hebrew liturgical poems – but for the most varied information recorded by the one who was known as Seu Melul – is the object of this text. The various data included in it, by bringing different aspects of Jewish life in Belém do Pará in the 20th century, help to compose the profile of what was the second Jewish community in the country. A caderneta intitulada Piyutim de Isaac P. Melul, do acervo do Museu Judaico de São Paulo, precioso documento não só pelo seu conteúdo principal – uma coletânea de poemas litúrgicos hebraicos – mas pelas mais variadas informações registradas por aquele que foi conhecido como Seu Melul – é objeto deste texto. Os diversos dados nele incluídos, ao trazerem variados aspectos da vida judaica de Belém do Pará no século XX, ajudam a compor o perfil daquela que foi a segunda comunidade judaica do país.

Judaism never appears explicitly in Clarice Lispector's literature. However, as shown by Gilda Szklo (1989), Nelson Vieira (1989) and Berta Waldman (2011; 2014), the Jewish influence can be perceived in different ways in Clarice's writing. In this work, we will analyze the presence of midrashim in the representation of Christmas in the chronicles “Anunciação”, “A virgem em todas as mulheres”, “Ele seria alegre” e “A humildade de São José”. O judaísmo nunca aparece de maneira explícita na literatura de Clarice Lispector. No entanto, como demonstram Gilda Szklo (1989), Nelson Vieira (1989) e Berta Waldman (2011; 2014), a influência judaica pode ser percebida de diferentes formas na escrita de Clarice. Neste trabalho, analisaremos a presença de midrashim na representação do Natal nas crônicas “Anunciação”, “A virgem em todas as mulheres”, “Ele seria alegre” e “A humildade de São José”.

Iconoclasm, altogether, tends to be uncritically associated with Judaism as a kind of exclusion due to prejudice or due to excessively strict observance of religious dogma. Such an association, which emerged in the Middle Ages – which fueled vast anti-Jewish literature, focused on converting Jews to Christianity – underlies a view of the Jew almost as an enemy of the visual arts, from the perspective of the spectator and the observer. But such a perspective is, of course, wrong; for iconoclasm in Judaism had many other functions and a theoretical complexity of its own. And this complexity, in a way, survived and persisted in full modernity – as we will see in the case of the avant-garde group Infra-noir, mostly Jewish, in its relations with the aesthetic and cinematographic image. A iconoclastia, em geral, costuma estar associado acriticamente ao judaísmo como uma espécie de exclusão por preconceito ou por observância excessivamente estrita de dogmas religiosos. Tal associação, surgida na Idade Média – que alimentou vasta literatura antijudaica, focada na conversão dos judeus ao cristianismo – alicerça uma visão do judeu quase como um inimigo das artes visuais, da perspectiva do espectador e do observador. Mas tal perspectiva, evidentemente, é equivocada; pois a iconoclastia no judaísmo possuía muitas outras funções e uma complexidade teórica muito própria. E tal complexidade, de certa forma, sobreviveu e persistiu em plena modernidade – como veremos no caso do grupo de vanguarda Infra-noir, majoritariamente judeu, em suas relações com a imagem estética e cinematográfica.

Films produced by ultra-orthodox Jews acquired in the early years of the 21st century an important space within their own communities. They reflect the relationship between the ultra-orthodox communities and the State of Israel and the Zionist ideology. Appropriating the Hollywood genre of action films, even if within its walls, these films offer a visual alternative where the conflicting aspects and negotiations between such different sectors in Israeli society are discussed. In parallel, the narratives presented bring discussion about the ultra-orthodox male body, its imaginary place in Israeli society and the fantasies of transgression. Filmes produzidos por ultra-ortodoxos judeus adquiriram nos primeiros anos do século XXI um espaço importante no interior de suas próprias comunidades. Eles refletem as relações entre as comunidades ultra-ortodoxas e o Estado de Israel e a ideologia sionista. Apropriando-se do gênero hollywoodiano dos filmes de ação, ainda que dentro de seus muros, estes filmes oferecem uma alternativa visual onde são discutidos os aspectos conflitantes e as negociações entre setores tão diferentes na sociedade israelense. Paralelamente, as narrativas apresentadas trazem discussão sobre o corpo masculino ultra-ortodoxo, seu lugar imaginário na sociedade israelense e as fantasias de transgressão.

The biblical man's life span is ideally a set of three complete cycles of forty years each, totaling one hundred and twenty years. The one hundred and twenty is an ideal paradigmatic number, mathematically versatile and with a great symbolic content – conventionally perfect. Thus the transitory life fixed upon the one hundred and twentyyear expectation of the carnal and mortal man finds its meaning through the promise of long and productive life, which fulfills its divinely determined purpose and has as its summit satiety. O tempo de vida do homem bíblico é, idealmente, um conjunto de três ciclos completos de quarenta anos cada, totalizando cento e vinte anos. O cento e vinte é um número idealmente paradigmático, matematicamente versátil e com um grande conteúdo simbólico – convencionalmente perfeito. Assim, a vida transitória fixada na expectativa de cento de vinte anos do homem carnal e mortal encontra seu significado por intermédio da promessa de vida longa e produtiva, que cumpre o seu propósito divinamente determinado e tem como ápice a saciedade.

This article analyzes the Jewish presence in some poems of Jorge Luis Borges. This presence transpires not only in the explicit inspirations of several of his poems: “Spinoza”, “Paris, 1856”, dedicated to Heinrich Heine, in which Borges refers to the destiny of being a man and being Jewish, as in “Rafael Cansinos-Asséns”, but above all by the cosmogony reflected in the structure, by the thematic and the cut-off method of the Kabbalah. Este artigo analisa a presença judaica em alguns poemas de Jorge Luis Borges. Essa presença transparece não apenas nas inspirações explícitas de vários de seus poemas, tais como: “Spinoza”, “Paris, 1856”, dedicado a Heinrich Heine, no qual Borges se refere ao destino de ser homem e ser judeu, como em “Rafael Cansinos-Asséns”, mas, sobretudo, pela cosmogonia refletida na estruturação formal, pela temática e pelo método, recortado da Cabala.

This article seeks to construct, in the form of a commentary, a Jewish genealogy, aesthetic and literary, by Jorge Luis Borges. The narration begins in the Iberian Peninsula and returns to the continent to remember the encounter of the Argentine writer with the Andalusian Rafael Cansinos-Asséns. From this encounter emerges, in Borges’ work, an aesthetic Judaism, which will structure his most important texts. Este artigo busca construir, na forma de um comentário, uma genealogia judaica, estética e literária, de Jorge Luis Borges. A narração começa na Península Ibérica e retorna ao continente para lembrar o encontro do escritor argentino com o andaluz Rafael Cansinos-Asséns. Desse encontro, surge, na obra de Borges, um judaísmo estético, que irá estruturar seus textos mais importantes.

The intention of this article understands the cultural resistance tools enabled by the Jewish minority throughout the centuries. The focus is on the religious daily life and, within it, the use of rituals and the normative precepts named mitzvot. The latter are religious commandments described in the Pentateuch ruling multiple details of religious life, from sacrifices in the Jerusalem Temple to social, conjugal, and other kinds of relationships. The analysis aims at presenting a complex web of behavioral control, which creates a minority-protecting “fence” that prevents the absorption by society and its non-Jewish majority. The analysis covers an extended time span in medieval Western Europe, using the Cultural History framework. A intenção deste artigo é compreender os mecanismos de resistência cultural da minoria judaica através dos séculos. O foco são os usos de rituais no cotidiano religioso e dos preceitos normativos denominados mitzvot. Estas últimas são ordenações religiosas descritas no Pentateuco que regem múltiplos detalhes da vida religiosa, desde sacrifícios no templo de Jerusalém até relações sociais, conjugais, entre outras. A análise pretende demonstrar que se trata de uma complexa teia de controle comportamental, que cria uma “cerca” que protege a minoria, impedindo sua absorção pela sociedade majoritariamente não judaica. O recorte é de longa duração, fazendo uso da História Cultural e focando no Ocidente medieval.

The literary studies, which have indicated Jewish influences in the fictional production of Jorge Luis Borges, are not recent. However, few have devoted themselves to the poems organized in 1969 in the book entitled Praise of the Shadow, in which there are poems that dialogue with biblical passages and with the imaginary around Israel. This article aims to discuss the concepts of Judaism and of Jewish identity and to analyze the poems entitled Israel and the others which convey some biblical references, in order to ratify the already produced criticism which identified the admiration and the affinity of Borges towards the Jews and towards Jewish culture. Não são recentes os estudos literários que apontaram para a presença da tradição judaica na obra de Jorge Luis Borges. No entanto, poucos se dedicaram aos poemas organizados em 1969 sob o título Elogio da sombra. Nessa coletânea, vários desses textos poéticos dialogam com passagens bíblicas e com o imaginário em torno de Israel. Este artigo tem como principal objetivo discutir os conceitos de judaísmo e de identidade judaica e analisar os poemas intitulados “Israel” e os demais que trazem referências bíblicas a fim de ratificar a crítica já produzida que identificou a admiração e a afinidade de Borges para com os judeus e para com a cultura judaica.

The rabbinical Judaism develops itself between letters among texts, which transcend printed pictures. The colors of the Hebrew Scriptures in the Jewish literature reflect concepts over the visual imagination. This article aim is to show some narratives, the composition of some Hebrew words and explanations about colors and their meanings in the Hebrew texts in the rabbinical Jewish literature context. This article approach helps the memorization of Hebrew vocabulary through the connection found between the symbolical and the literal roots of the Hebrew morphemes. O judaísmo rabínico se desenvolve entre letras e textos que transcendem as figuras impressas. As cores das escrituras hebraicas do judaísmo refletem conceitos além da imaginação. Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar algumas passagens sobre a composição das palavras hebraicas e explicações sobre as cores, seus sentidos e significados nos textos bíblicos hebraicos no contexto da literatura judaica rabínica. A abordagem utilizada auxilia a memorização do vocabulário hebraico por intermédio da associação entre as raízes simbólicas e literárias das unidades linguísticas hebraicas.

The plot of the novel Scenes of the tiny life oscillates between two narrative axes: the past and the present. In evoking the familiar memory of the protagonist, the first axis addresses elements of the Jewish tradition. After the diaspora experienced by it, the second axis develops in an agonizing present time. Certain metaphors enhance the author's keen gaze to the complex relationships of otherness arising from this context. Present throughout the novel, past-present antagonism produces continuous dialogue between tradition and diasporic Judaism. Such poles project the prospect of an uncertain and reified future. The protagonist goes through a supposed amnesic effect, a scene that presents the reader in a disconcerting way. Such a scenario may call into question the verisimilitude constructed in the narrative. O enredo do romance Cenas da vida minúscula oscila entre dois eixos narrativos: o passado e o presente. Ao evocar a memória familiar do protagonista, o primeiro eixo aborda elementos da tradição judaica. Após a diáspora vivenciada por ele, o segundo eixo se desenvolve num tempo presente angustiante. Certas metáforas potencializam o agudo olhar do autor às complexas relações de alteridade decorrentes desse contexto. Presente em toda o romance, o antagonismo passado-presente produz diálogo contínuo entre a tradição e o judaísmo diaspórico. Tais polos projetam a perspectiva de um futuro incerto e reificado. O protagonista passa por um suposto efeito amnésico, cena essa que se apresenta ao leitor de forma desconcertante. Tal cenário pode pôr em xeque a verossimilhança construída na narrativa.

What stands out in the poetry of Lúcia Aizim is your unique and personal rhythm, and even thematic depictions in which Judaism transpires as larded with hybrid tropical Brazilian elements. This mix, drawn in different dimensions, erects a singular poetic, with differentiated resonances, who denounce abroad brought to the national body, the contemplative attitude focused on Jewish tradition, which nourishes, however, of everyday life. O que sobressai na poesia de Lúcia Aizim é seu ritmo singular e pessoal e ainda figurações temáticas em que o judaísmo transparece como matéria híbrida entremeada com elementos tropicais, brasileiros. Essa mescla, traçada em diferentes dimensões, erige uma poética singular, com ressonâncias diferenciadas, que denunciam o estrangeiro trazido para o corpo nacional, a atitude contemplativa voltada à tradição judaica, que se nutre, porém, da vida do dia a dia.

This essay theme emerged from the controversy of Jewish women who fought for the right to pray at the Wailing Wall, a right hitherto reserved for men only. This right was recently conquered by them. However many Orthodox Jews are against. Thus, the objective of this theme was to investigate the arguments for and against women have this right. Arguments have been raised against this right of women, based on beliefs of Orthodox Jews, and arguments in favor of women, based on the beliefs of non-Orthodox Jews. In conclusion, it was found that the orthodox foundations derive from custom and tradition, not a law. Este artigo surgiu a partir da polêmica das mulheres judias que lutavam pelo direito de rezar no Muro das Lamentações ou Muro Ocidental, o Kotel HaMaaravi, um direito até então reservado apenas para os homens. Esse direito recentemente foi conquistado por elas. No entanto, muitos judeus de orientação religiosa ortodoxa são contra. Assim, o objetivo deste texto foi investigar os argumentos contra e a favor para desse direito. Foram levantados argumentos contrários fundamentados em crenças dos judeus ortodoxos; e argumentos favoráveis, ancorados em crenças de judeus não ortodoxos. Como conclusão, foi encontrado que os fundamentos ortodoxos são decorrentes de costume e tradição, e não especificamente numa lei.

Considering the importance of the familiar and cultural memory’s preservation to the Jewish community, this paper intends to analyze the novel Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer, from the search for family memory undertaken by the protagonist. The novel, which brings the authorial so as a character, reports Jonathan’s trip to Ukraine to rescue the history of his grandfather before he runs away to the US during World War II. Since the novel uses the biography and several discourses(reports) in its construction, the paper aims to deconstruct the binarism between fictional X nonfictional speeches. Besides, in view of these elements and the identity’s shifting borders that appear in the book, it is intended to analyze, through the concept of nomadism, the recovery of memory as one of the determining factors in the identity construction. Tendo em vista a importância da preservação da memória familiar e cultural para a comunidade judaica, este artigo pretende analisar a obra Everything is Illuminated, de Jonathan Safran Foer, a partir da busca pela memória familiar empreendida pelo protagonista. A obra, que traz o autor também como personagem, relata a viagem de Foer até a Ucrânia para resgatar a história de seu avô antes de ele fugir para os EUA durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Visto que a obra utiliza a biografia e diversos discursos (relatos) em sua construção, visa-se desconstruir o binarismo discurso ficcional x não ficcional. Além disso, tendo em vista esses elementos e as fronteiras movediças da identidade que aparecem no livro, pretende-se analisar, por meio do conceito de nomadismo, o resgate da memória como um dos fatores determinantes na construção identitária.

Não é fácil tratar da obra de Moacyr Scliar (1937-2011) porque ele foi um escritor prolífico, tendo publicado mais de oitenta livros em vários gêneros: romance, conto, ensaio, crônica, ficção infantojuvenil. Este artigo faz um balanço da obra do escritor, seus temas e repercussões.

Este artículo analiza los relatos orales de dos mujeres judías descendientes de judíos marroquíes que emigraron a las Amazonas a finales Del siglo 19. La investigación fue compuesta para la metodología de la historia oral, em el que se propone el uso de la memoria como fuente histórica, y La teoría narrativa a la luz el filósofo Paul Ricoeur, que dice que narran es contar una historia em la perspectiva de todos, realizar una síntesis de heterogéneos. Estas historias se centran ea las construcciones familiares heterogéneas, las relaciones de género y los aspectos más importantes de narradoras, en el contexto de diáspora Marroquí en el estado de Amazonas. Este artigo analisa as narrativas orais de duas mulheres descendentes de judeus marroquinos que migraram para a Amazônia no final do século 19. A pesquisa foi constituída pela metodologia da história oral, que propõe o uso da memória como fonte histórica, e a narrativa teorizada a luz do filosofo Paul Ricoeur, que afirma que narrar é contar uma história numa perspectiva de totalidade, realizando-se uma síntese do heterogêneo. Essas histórias heterogêneas enfocam as construções familiares, as relações de gênero e as dimensões mais significativas vivenciadas pelas narradoras, no contexto da diáspora marroquina no estado do Amazonas.

This article has as its main objective to analyze the book O ciclo das águas, by the author Moacyr Scliar, searching, through the story of Esther, highlighting the process of prostitution of Jewish girls, in particular the “Polish”, brought from Europe to Brazil. As prostitution involving Jews was a taboo in the Jewish community in Brazil, Moacyr Scliar pioneered the approach this theme through fiction. What must be considered is that the novel, as narrative genre, tackles about the reality of those Jewish women in Brazil, giving verisimilitude, but not limiting the description of reality (attribute of historiography), but their representation. Thus, through names like Kushnir (1996), Scliar (1985; 2002), and other authors, we intend to investigate the relation between “the sacred and the profane” that permeates the figure of the Jewish woman who becomes a prostitute, within a context in which prostitution and Judaism are intertwined. Este artigo tem como objetivo principal analisar o livro O ciclo das águas, de Moacyr Scliar, buscando, por meio da história da personagem Esther, evidenciar o processo de prostituição de moças judias, em especial as “polacas”, trazidas da Europa para o Brasil. Como a prostituição envolvendo judeus era um tabu presente na comunidade judaica no Brasil, Moacyr Scliar foi o pioneiro a abordar este tema por meio da ficção. O que deve ser considerado é que o romance, como gênero narrativo, aborda sobre a realidade vivida dessas mulheres no Brasil, o que lhe confere verossimilhança, porém não se limita à descrição da realidade (atributo da historiografia), mas à sua representação. This paper constructs a synthesis of Arnold Schoenberg’s biography as a Jewish man, having his own statements as main source of information. In these writings, the composer deals with the period of his birth in Germany, his poor childhood, the rising of his own geniality, his expulsion from Germany, his life on the United States and his struggle for the creation of the state of Israel. Este trabalho procurou construir uma síntese da biografia do compositor Arnold Schoenberg, a partir de suas próprias declarações, feitas nos momentos mais significativos de sua vida. Nesses escritos, o compositor narra seu nascimento na Alemanha, a infância pobre, o desenvolvimento de sua genialidade musical, sua expulsão da Alemanha, a vida nos Estados Unidos e sua luta pela criação do Estado de Israel.

The present article analyzes the confessional rhetoric characteristic of the novel Por que sou gorda, mamãe?, by Cíntia Moscovich. First, this study aims to identify the narrative strategies used by the gaúchan author to leave marks of the rhetoric of confession in all the interstices of the text, in a cyclical dynamics. To this end, it draws on the reflections of Philippe Lejeune about writing in first person as well as on those of Jacques Derrida about the autoimmune nature of the autobiographical text. Second, this article focuses on the origins and the different facets of guilt that the narrator suffers from, leaning on her relationship with the female body and the notion of guilt in Judaism. Moacyr Scliar’s essay Enigmas of guilt contributes with essential elements to understand the specificity of the feeling of guilt in the Jewish tradition. Este artigo analisará a retórica confessional própria ao romance Por que sou gorda, mamãe?, de Cíntia Moscovich. Num primeiro momento, o estudo buscará identificar as estratégias narrativas utilizadas pela escritora gaúcha para inscrever a retórica da confissão em todos os interstícios do texto, numa dinâmica cíclica. Para tal, o artigo apoiar-se-á nas reflexões de Philippe Lejeune sobre a escrita em primeira pessoa bem como as de Jacques Derrida a respeito do caráter autoimunitário do texto autobiográfico. Num segundo tempo, o artigo focalizará as diferentes origens e facetas do sentimento de culpa de que sofre a narradora, apoiando-se na sua relação com o corpo feminino e na noção de culpa no judaísmo. O ensaio de Moacyr Scliar, Enigmas da culpa, fornecerá elementos essenciais para compreendermos a especificidade da culpa na tradição judaica.

Inspired by the story of the families of Sam Garbarski, German Director, and Philippe Blasb and, Iranian filmmaker, The Tango of Rashevski, 2003, puts in scene a Belgian Jewish family, until the death of their matriarch, Rose, is fully aware of the cultural and religious tradition. The family, who notices all of a sudden, they not only don't know about their traditions, but also do not know each other. Although they share a jaded Jewish humor, love by Rosa and tango, the family cannot agree on almost nothing. From the death of Rose, is that all start to realize that it was she who knew all the traditions of the religion in which they do not know how to live. The identity, customs and rites are confused, especially when Nina, one of granddaughters, is courted by a Christian who accepts to convert to marry him. Or even when Rico, another grandson, falls in love and decides to live with Khadija, a Muslim. The stories of Rosa, Nina and Khadija intertwine, revealing not only strategies of belonging, as well as with the others, even in situations anything. Inspirado na história das famílias dos roteiristas, o alemão Sam Garbarski, também diretor, e o iraniano Philippe Blasband, o filme O tango de Rashevski, 2003, coloca em cena uma família judaica belga que, até a morte de sua matriarca, Rosa, não tem plena consciência da tradição cultural e religiosa judaica. A família, que percebe, de repente, que eles não apenas não sabem sobre suas tradições, mas também não conhecem uns aos outros. Apesar de partilharem de um refinado humor judaico, do amor por Rosa e do tango, a família não consegue concordar em quase nada.A partir da morte de Rosa, é que todos começam a perceber que era ela quem conhecia todas as tradições da religião na qual eles não sabem viver. A identidade, os costumes e os ritos ficam confusos, principalmente quando Nina, uma das netas de Rosa, é cortejada por um cristão que aceita converter-se para se casar com a moça. Ou mesmo quando Rico, outro neto, se apaixona e decide viver com Khadija, uma muçulmana. As histórias de Rosa, Nina e Khadija se entrelaçam, revelando não só estratégias de pertencimento, quanto de aproximação com o outro, mesmo em situações nada propícias.

Desvendar os mundos poéticos e narrativos dessas duas poetisas é um desafio de fôlego. Este artigo não tem a pretensão de fazer uma análise profunda. Pretendemos trazer à luz apenas algumas semelhanças e diferenças entre Wollach e Hilst, duas mulheres sempre à deriva, sempre “estrangeiras” mesmo dentro da própria casa.

Este artigo faz um balanço da obra do escritor, seus temas e repercussões.

A Consolação às Tribulações de Israel (1553) by Samuel Usque is the main literary testimony of the expulsion and dispersion that the Portuguese Jews were submitted, beginning in the year of 1531. With a memory inclination, this work explores the tragedy and the exile that the religious intolerance and the action of the Inquisition imposed to the Iberian Jews. In his text, Samuel Usque comments that the real consolation is obtained by comparing the last evils with the experiments in the present. Such intention took the author to revisit the suffered tragedies by the Hebrew people, since the biblical times to the time of the persecutions of the Inquisition. A Consolação às Tribulações de Israel (1553) de Samuel Usque é o principal testemunho literário da expulsão e da diáspora a que foram submetidos os judeus portugueses, a partir de 1531. Com inclinaçao memorialística, essa obra explora a tragédia e o exílio que a intolerância religiosa e a ação da Inquisição impuseram aos judeus ibéricos. Em seu texto, Samuel Usque comenta que a consolação efetiva se obtém comparando os males passados com os experimentos no presente. Tal intenção levou o autor a revisitar as tragédias sofridas pelo povo hebreu, desde os tempos bíblicos até a época das perseguições da Inquisição.

This article was conceaved with the objective of presenting rabin Mossen Rephael d'Aguilar, in particular its Treatise of the soul's immortality and The discourse of magic Hebrew alphabet. Although the precise date or place in which the texts were written aren’t known (if it was in Amsterdam or Recife), these texts allow us further comprehension of the renaissance context as well as the Jewish Sephardi culture of the period, characterized by its dread of the Inquisition, by despair, by Marranism and by mental reserve. Este artigo tem o objetivo de apresentar o rabino Mosseh Rephael d’Aguilar e sua obra, em particular o Tratado da imortalidade da alma e o Discurso sobre a significação das letras hebraicas. Embora não se saiba a data precisa ou o local em que foram escritos (se em Amsterdã ou em Recife), esses textos permitem a compreensão do contexto renascentista do qual eles estão impregnados, bem como da cultura judaica sefardita do período, cultura caracterizada pelo horror à Inquisição, pelo desespero, pelo marranismo e pela reserva mental. &nbsp

The Jewish culture is based in strong familiar traditions, most of them religious, which added to the gregarious character of their faith, as the always necessary minyan of ten men for the celebration and worship, it has succeeded keep united their groups in the middle of different cultures. All the needs of the Jewish worship and the wide power of the tradition have created certain cohesion of group, however, elements originated of the cultures in contact somewhat have influenced the Jewish minorities, adding new elements or changing some of their daily practices. The book Os dispersos, a collection of seven short stories, from the Brazilian writer Janette Fishenfeld, focuses these contacts and the conflicts created by them: a couple that understand that it is impossible to be together, separated by the tradition; the old Zeide, the grandpa, inmate of a home for old people, that remembers the past, in the moment that he goes to the brit-milah of his great-grandson, among his assimilated family – those and other situations in which the Jewish traditions crash against the new life possibilities in Brazil and among the Brazilian culture, and their needs of adaptation for survive. This article intends to present how this writer recreates in her text all this situations of acculturation, assimilation and the conflicts with the Jewish tradition. A cultura judaica é baseada em fortes tradições familiares, predominantemente religiosas, que, somada ao caráter gregário de sua fé, como o sempre necessário minyan, ou quórum mínimo de dez homens para as celebrações e cultos, conseguiu manter os grupos unidos em meio a diversas culturas. As necessidades do culto e o grande poder exercido pela tradição promoveram certa coesão de grupo, entretanto, elementos oriundos das culturas em contato, de certa forma, influenciaram as minorias judias, acrescentando novos elementos ou alterando as suas práticas diárias. A coletânea de contos Os dispersos, da escritora carioca Janette Fishenfeld, enfoca esses contatos e os conflitos criados por eles: um casal que percebe a impossibilidade de ficarem juntos pela tradição; o velho Zeide, o avô, interno de um asilo que relembra o passado no momento que se dirige ao brit-milá do bisneto, em meio a família completamente assimilada – essas e outras situações em que as tradições judaicas entram em conflito em face das novas possibilidades de vida no Brasil, sua cultura, suas necessidades de adaptação para sobrevivência. Este artigo pretende, assim, apresentar como esta escritora recria, em seu texto, a aculturação, a assimilação e os conflitos com a tradição judaica.

In this book, as well as in other Aleijadinho, 1982, and Enxuga as lágrimas e segue o caminho que te determinaste, 1999, the background of the stories is always the lush beauty and grandeur of the Amazonia rainforests. The variety of animals and their behaviors are elements that populate the fictional universe of the author, beyond the frames in which his characters, shifting cultivators, hunters and riparian face jaguars “atrevidas e sanhudas”,as the narrator defines them. Os dois contos que compõem a antologia Contos amazonenses, 1981, refletem muito da paixão de Esaguy pela selva amazônica e sua cultura, bem como o entrelaçamento desta com a cultura judaica, presente, a partir de vestígios, em seus textos. Nesse livro, bem como em outros como O Aleijadinho, 1982, e Enxuga as lágrimas e segue o caminho que te determinaste, 1999, o pano de fundo das histórias é sempre a beleza exuberante e o grandiosidade da mata Amazônica. A variedade dos animais e seus comportamentos são elementos que povoam o universo ficcional do autor, além das tramas em que suas personagens, caboclos, ribeirinhos e caçadores, enfrentam onças "ʺatrevidas e sanhudas"ʺ, como o narrador as define.

The recent publication of 3 books, Samuel Rawet: Contos e novelas reunidos (Civilização Brasileira, 2004), Samuel Rawet: fortuna crítica em jornais e revistas (Caetés, 2008) and Samuel Rawet: ensaios reunidos (Civilização Brasileira, 2008), allowed a qualitative leap for the researchers which have Rawet’s work in their horizon, inasmuch as those books offered a comprehensive overview that puts in evidence some characteristics which pervade his work. This article focuses on the ambiguous relationship between the Jew and Christian world, which recurs in Rawet’s fictional work. Even the Jew born in Brazil, perfectly acculturated and integrated, feels threatened in his Jewish particularity, compelled to abandon the last traces which link him to his people’s culture and traditions, and, at the same time, fascinated and attracted to Christianity. Este artigo focaliza a relação ambígua do judeu com o mundo cristão, recorrente na obra ficcional de Samuel Rawet, pois mesmo o judeu já nascido no Brasil, perfeitamente aculturado e integrado, sente-­se ameaçado em sua particularidade judaica, compelido a abandonar os últimos traços que o ligam à cultura e às tradições de seu povo e, ao mesmo tempo, fascinado, atraído pelo cristianismo.

My aim is to present in this article the fiction of Clarice Lispector, one of the exponents of contemporary Brazilian literature as bonded to Judaism, however she does not lead the reader to any data that points to it. Besides the Jewish background, there is also the Christian influence, in addition to popular beliefs, suggesting her commitment to integrating within the particular framework of Brazilian religious experiences, which is marked by syncretism. So, it is certain that the Bible has been as a basis to her, and my purpose here is to check, in face of the law, how the recurrence to this source has a weight in the work of the author. Meu objetivo é apresentar, neste artigo, a ficção da escritora Clarice Lispector, um dos expoentes da literatura brasileira contemporânea, como vinculada ao judaísmo, quando ela não oferece ao leitor nenhum dado direto que aponte para ele. Para além da presença judaica, verifica-­se também a cristã, além de crenças populares, o que sugere o seu empenho de integração no quadro particular das experiências religiosas brasileiras, marcado pelo sincretismo. Todavia, é certo que a Bíblia lhe serviu de base, e meu propósito, aqui, é verificar como, no que concerne à lei, a recorrência a essa fonte tem um peso na obra da autora.

O romance de Moacyr Scliar, A estranha nação de Rafael Mendes, 1983, oferece, no contexto desta dissertação, oportunidade para o estudo do que pode ser visto como uma genealogia literária, a partir da criação do seu protagonista, Rafael Mendes. A construção da genealogia nesse romance vale-se de recursos narrativos importantes da teoria da literatura, bem como de sua ligação com a história e com a memória cultural. Ao longo desta pesquisa, buscou-se demarcar os mecanismos particulares como análise/elaboração do conceito a que se adotou chamar de 'genealogia literária'. Esse conceito, à medida que é comparado à genealogia em sua forma tradicional - historicamente usado como mecanismo político de aliança, encartando indivíduos dotados de costado ou sangue supostamente nobre - ganha, na ficção, um dimensionamento mais crítico, ao escapar das relações hierarquizadas e da ordem que se supõe natural ou divinamente dada. A genealogia literária, no romance de Scliar, ao recompor a história de gerações e gerações de antepassados de Rafael Mendes, pela ironia, é capaz de desconstruir os mecanismos fundamentais de que se valem a forma tradicional de se construir árvore de família, propondo, assim, outras ordens ou ordenações. The novel of Moacyr Scliar, A estranha nação de Rafael Mendes, 1983, shows in this context, opportunity to the study that can be seen like a literary genealogy of the creation of its protagonist Rafael Mendes. This genealogy uses important narrations resources of literary theory as well as your relation with the history and the cultural memory. This research attempted mark the particular mechanisms like analyses/elaboration about the concept which was adopted to call literary genealogy. By using this expression it seeks to detach its relation with the traditional meanings of genealogy that is historically used like politics mechanisms of alliance and inserting able individual parentage or supposedly noble blood earn, in fiction one critic in the same time that escape hierarchy relations that attempt somewhat, think about one supposed natural order or divinely given. The literary genealogy in the novel of Scliar builds the history of generations and generations of Rafael Mendes ancestors who through irony is able to deconstruction of fundamental mechanisms.

The present article discuss Jewish characters of the historical romance Ivanhoé, by Walter Scott. During the Medium Age, the Jewish community in England was under the protection of noblemen and also at the mercy of arbitrary rates, as well as of discrimination laws. To what extent does Walter Scott's work contribute to unmask that universe of the exile? Does its narrative reinforce stereotypes or does it just illustrate fictionally a reality where the differences were systematically marked? O presente artigo discute a representação de personagens judeus do romance histórico Ivanhoé, de Walter Scott. Durante a Idade Média, a comunidade judaica na Inglaterra estava sob a proteção de nobres e também à mercê de taxações arbitrárias, bem como de leis discriminatórias. Até que ponto a obra de Walter Scott contribui para desvendar esse universo da diáspora? Sua narrativa reforça estereótipos ou apenas ilustra ficcionalmente uma realidade onde as diferenças eram sistematicamente marcadas?

As múltiplas representações e versões desses verbetes, bem como seu diálogo com a Torah e sua inscrição na literatura.

Analysis of three instances of Yiddish theatre in Buenos Aires. The first, a theatre spoken in Yiddish that comes from the contexts of immigration, that has to do with the millenarian life of the Jewish, the memories of the shetl, and the pogroms. The second is the theatre of the experience in the region of Argentina, related to the narrative, already in Yiddish, already in castellano. The third exemplifies the start of the extinction of Yiddish, having spectators with different migratory roots, that won’t understand the Yiddish, with the growing debility of Yiddish in the collectivity, or by effect of assimilation or by the tragic act that Yiddish had developed the huge debility imposed by Nazism, which will eventually lead to the death of the language that, in Argentina and several other places, was most identified with the Jewish. Analise de tres instancias de teatro en ídish en Buenos Aires. La primera, un teatro hablado en ídish que surge de los contextos de la inmigración, que tiene que ver con la vida milenaria de los judíos, de los recuerdos del shetl, de los pogroms. La segunda es el teatro de las vivencias en territorio argentino, en el ámbito de la narrativa, ya en ídish, ya en castellano. La tercera ejemplifica el comienzo de la desaparición del ídish, con espectadores de otras ascendencias inmigratorias, que no van a entender el ídish, con la creciente debilidad del ídish en la colectividad, o por efecto de la asimilación o por el trágico hecho de que el ídish había emprendido la enorme decadencia impuestas por el nazismo, que desembocará eventualmente en la muerte del idioma que, en la Argentina y en muchos otros lugares, más se identificaba con los judíos.

In this article, I study Eve’s largest discours in The life of Adam and Eve, greek version. At first, I introduce the theme of the change of perspective through a contemporary novel, Jostein Gaarder’ʹs Vita Brevis. Next, I show fastly the text with which I work. Then, I aproach Eve'ʹs discours, observing in what way it is inserted in the narrative. I think about the way in which the change of perspective of Eve’s retelling makes possible the construction of a narrative which mix “to tell” and “to interpret”, like agadic Midrashim. Neste artigo, estudo o discurso de Eva em A vida de Adão e Eva, em sua versão grega. Em um primeiro momento, introduzo o tema da mudança de perspectiva a partir de uma obra contemporânea, Vita Brevis de Jostein Gaarder. Em seguida, apresento brevemente o texto com o qual trabalho. Então, abordo o discurso de Eva, observando a maneira como este se insere na narrativa mais ampla. Reflito também sobre como a mudança de perspectiva instaurada no recontar de Eva possibilita uma narrativa na qual contar e interpretar se mesclam, à maneira dos midrashim agádicos.

Therefore, this text aims for a reflection about the manifestation of this humour in the popular laughter, in the tasteful stories and in the set of anecdotes of the Jewish tradition O folclore humorístico judaico é talvez um dos mais ricos que existem. Este artigo trata de expor sua configuração desde a épica bíblica até a contemporaneidade, a partir de uma perspectiva panorâmica. Este artigo busca, assim, refletir sobre a manifestação desse humor no riso popular, nas saborosas histórias e no anedotário da tradição judaica.

Após uma revisão da prática da alegorese anterior a Fílon, são apresentados, traduzidos e comentados todos os trechos em que ele usa as palavras allegoría, allegoréo e allegorikós. O objetivo é saber o que ele diz sobre alegoria. Em seguida, é observado o papel da alegoria filônica no tratado Sobre os Sonhos I, visando demonstrar o que ele faz com a alegoria. The writer cites the Jews on the list of people having a mythology with his golems, dybbuks and other creatures, capable of inspiring the supernatural terror. Howard Phillips Lovecraft acreditava que os povos, para criarem obras fantásticas de terror sobrenatural, deveriam ter certa “inclinação” para o deslumbramento diante do irracional, afirmando que a França e seu povo, por exemplo, seriam racionais demais para tanto. O escritor cita os judeus no rol dos povos possuidores de uma mitologia, com seus golems, dybbuks e outras criaturas, capaz de inspirar o terror sobrenatural.

Em Histórias do Rabi, 1949, Martin Buber assume que as histórias ali contadas não são fidedignas, mas lendas criadas por pessoas entusiasmadas que acreditaram ter percebido certos fatos. É justamente por essa razão que Buber as chama de realidade: “a realidade de almas ferventes, uma realidade engendrada em total inocência, sem lugar para invenção ou para o capricho”.

The Dibuk by Sch. An-Ski is one of the biggest hits of Yiddish Theatre and Hebrew, but had a difficult road to reach the scene. This article discusses the context of their production. A peça O Dibuk, de Sch. An-­Ski, é um dos maiores êxitos do teatro ídiche e hebraico, mas teve um caminho difícil para chegar à cena. Este artigo analisa o seu percurso e o contexto de sua produção.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo traçar um panorama da presença judaica na história e, principalmente, na literatura brasileira a partir de fins do século XIX. Nesse período ocorrem profundas modificações na estrutura social européia que motivaram ondas migratórias da Europa para os Estados Unidos e países da América Latina, como o Brasil. Alguns desses emigrantes já eram escritores ou aqui se tornaram. Destes escritores que aqui aportaram foram escolhidos para análise dois contos de Samuel Rawet, Meir Kucinski e Jacó Guinsburg. A ficção produzida por eles representa a condição desses emigrantes no Brasil. Foi possível através dos aspectos histórico e literário construir um perfil dos emigrantes judeus e de sua atuação na sociedade brasileira. Os recém-chegados, na ficção de Kucinski (1904-1976), Ginsburg(1921) e Rawet (1929-1984), depararam com uma realidade totalmente diferente da que conheciam. Algumas características, como a língua, a cultura e a religião, criaram barreiras, para muitos, intransponíveis. Desse modo, esses personagens experimentaram momentos de sofrimento e exclusão. Outros, porém, enfrentaram os desafios, adaptaram-se à nova realidade e, através do humor, conseguiram sobreviver no Brasil

This article will discuss the vision of the work in the biblical text that tends to be conceived, but maintains certain amount of coherence with the accepted social values and those of the society. The initial stretch of the Pentateuch, inserted in the early chapters of Genesis, can be interpreted thus through a variety of ways. Este artigo discutirá a visão do trabalho no texto bíblico que tende a ser idealizada, mas mantém certa dose de coerência com os valores sociais aceitos e praticados pela sociedade. O trecho inicial do Pentateuco, inserido nos capítulos iniciais do Gênesis, pode ser interpretado, assim, por meio de uma diversidade de maneiras.

The goal of this test is to reflect on the aspects of intolerance to Jews, built on the basis of the nature of religious theological and ecclesiastical thought.
