Entender o processo de expansão do Homo sapiens nas Américas, principalmente na América do Sul, ainda é complexo e não existe um consenso sobre vários aspectos como a data de chegada, as rotas seguidas pelas primeiras populações, a quantidade de ondas de colonização, por onde chegaram e a origem dessas primeiras populações. Contudo, a expansão das populações humanas pelo planeta influenciou a extinção da megafauna no Quaternário Tardio, principalmente mamíferos de grande porte (maior que 45 kg), sendo que a América do Sul foi um dos continentes com maior perda de espécies (~80%). Nesse contexto, o objetivo da tese foi explorar, através de modelos ecológicos, os processos de expansão do H. sapiens na América do Sul e seus efeitos sobre a extinção dos Proboscídeos nesse continente. No primeiro capítulo, foi desenvolvido um modelo ecológico que simula a expansão do H. sapiens com o objetivo de mapear o tempo de expansão e a abundância do H. sapiens desde 21 mil anos atrás até o presente. No capítulo 2, através do modelo de nicho ecológico, foi obtido a adequabilidade ambiental e o tamanho da distribuição geográfica para os Proboscídeos sul-americanos ao longo de todo o continente e em vários períodos de tempo, com o objetivo de entender se o efeito das mudanças climáticas influenciou na extinção dessas espécies. No terceiro capítulo, foi aplicado um modelo demográfico básico que simula a dinâmica predador-presa, considerando que o H. sapiens caçavam a megafauna, juntamente com variáveis que levam em consideração as mudanças climáticas, com o objetivo de entender se os efeitos conjuntos da caça e das mudanças climáticas influenciaram na extinção dos Proboscídeos na América do Sul. Os resultados mostraram que em menos de 500 anos após a chegada do H. sapiens todo o continente já estava colonizado e os locais com maior capacidade de suporte apresentaram maior abundância. Os efeitos das mudanças climáticas por si só não foram capazes de extinguir os Proboscídeos, pois em períodos que essas espécies já estavam extintas ainda haviam habitas adequados para sua sobrevivência. Contudo, os efeitos conjuntos da caça pelos humanos e das mudanças climáticas influenciaram na extinção dos Proboscídeos, mostrando que a chegada do H. sapiens realmente afetou a sobrevivência da megafauna, que já havia superado várias oscilações climáticas ao longo do período Quaternário. Understanding the process of Homo sapiens expansion in the Americas, especially in South America, is still complex and there is no consensus on several aspects such as the date of arrival, the routes followed by the first populations, the number of waves of colonization, where they arrived and the origin of these first populations. However, we know that the expansion of humans across the planet influenced the extinction of the megafauna in the Late Quaternary, mainly large mammals (over 45 kg), with South America being one of the continents with the greatest loss of species (~ 80%). In this context, the objective of the thesis was to explore, through ecological models, the human expansion processes in South America and their effects on the extinction of Proboscideans in that continent. In the first chapter, we developed an ecological model that simulates the expansion of H. sapiens in order to map the time of expansion and abundance of H. sapiens from 21 thousand years ago to the present. In chapter 2, using the ecological niche model, we obtained the environmental suitability and the range for the South American Proboscideans throughout the continent and in various periods, with the main objective of understanding if the effect of the climate change influenced the extinction of these species. In the third chapter, we apply a basic demographic model that simulates predator-prey dynamics, considering that H. sapiens hunted megafauna, together with variables that take into account climate change, in order to understand whether the joint effects of hunting and climate change influenced the extinction of Proboscideans in South America. Our results showed that in less than 500 years after the arrival of H. sapiens, the entire continent was already colonized and the places with greater support capacity showed greater abundance. The effects of climate change alone were not able to extinguish the Proboscideans, because in periods when these species were already extinct there were still habitats suitable for their survival. However, the joint effects of hunting by humans and climate change influenced the extinction of Proboscideans, showing that the arrival of H. sapiens really affected the survival of the megafauna, which had already overcome several climatic fluctuations throughout the Quaternary period. Ao longo da história o planeta já passou por diversos eventos de mudanças no clima. Entender como as espécies atuais responderam a essas mudanças do passado é uma forma de elucidar as estratégias que poderão ser utilizadas por elas para lidar com as mudanças em curso. As espécies tendem a responder às mudanças climáticas se dispersando para áreas que continuam adequadas, se adaptando ou se extinguindo. A dispersão é a resposta comumente adotada e se relaciona diretamente com a conservação do nicho climático. No entanto, a espécie pode também se adaptar às novas condições por meio do que tem sido chamado de “resgate evolutivo”. Nesse contexto, temos o Bison bison, espécie de grande mamífero bem representada no registro fóssil e que conseguiu sobreviver aos diferentes eventos climáticos ocorridos no passado. No presente estudo utilizamos uma abordagem eco evolutiva, unindo modelos de nicho ecológico, métodos de sobreposição de nicho e modelos evolutivos, para investigar os diferentes tipos de resposta adotadas por Bison bison a partir da transição entre o Pleistoceno e o Holoceno até o presente. Nossos resultados mostraram um padrão de conservação de nicho. A espécie possuía áreas adequadas mais ao sul da América do norte, que ao longo do tempo foram se deslocando para o norte, acompanhando suas preferências climáticas. Os métodos de sobreposição também indicaram que ao longo do tempo os nichos da espécie tendem a ficar mais similares, apresentando valores superiores a 0.5 para grande maioria dos intervalos analisados. No entanto, apesar do padrão de conservação, existiram pontos de ocorrência fora dos envelopes climáticos. Os modelos evolutivos apontaram para esses pontos taxas evolutivas muito baixas. Quando analisados quanto a sua probabilidade de serem resgatados esses pontos se mostraram evolutivamente viáveis dentro dos parâmetros considerados. O padrão consistente de conservação do nicho e o grande potencial adaptativo mostram que no intervalo de tempo analisado a espécie combinou diferentes tipos de estratégias que a permitiram persistir ao longo do tempo. O framework proposto aqui permite aos cientistas analisar sistematicamente a dinâmica histórica da distribuição das espécies, bem como seu potencial adaptativo, e pode potencialmente ser usada em estudos futuros para acessar outras questões em Paleoecologia. The world has undergone several climate change events throughout history. Understanding the responses of extant species that underwent these changes is a way to access the strategies used by them on dealing with these changes. Overall, species tend to respond to climate change by dispersing to areas that remain climatically suitable, adapting to the change or becoming extinct. Dispersion to suitable areas is the answer commonly implemented by species and is related to the climatic niche conservatism. Species can also adapt to new climatic conditions through what has been called "evolutionary rescue". In this context, we have Bison bison, a large mammal species, that is well represented in the fossil record and managed to survive the different climatic events that occurred in the past. Here we used an eco-evolutionary approach, combining ecological niche models, niche overlapping methods and evolutionary models, to investigate the different types of responses adopted by Bison bison throughout the transition between the Pleistocene and Holocene to date. Our results showed a pattern of niche conservatism. The species had suitable areas further south of North America, which eventually moved north, following their climatic preferences. Niche overlap methods also indicated that over time the specie's niches tend to become more similar, with values greater than 0.5 for the vast majority of the analyzed intervals. However, despite the niche conservatism pattern, there were points of occurrence outside the climatic envelopes. The evolutionary models showed very low evolutionary rates to these points. When analyzed in the sense of their probability of being rescued, these points proved to be evolutionary viable within the considered parameters. The consistent pattern of niche conservatism and the great adaptive potential shows that, in the analyzed time interval, the species combined different types of strategies that allowed it to persist over time. The framework purposed here allows scientists to systematically analyze the historical dynamics of species distribution as well as its adaptive potential, and can potentially be used in future studies to access several questions in Paleoecology. Este trabalho situa-se no campo da educação ambiental crítica, cuja perspectiva se fundamenta nos propósitos de ser desveladora e comprometida com a transformação dos contextos sociais e a formação de pessoas capazes de identificar, questionar, propor soluções e agir perante as questões socioambientais. O estudo foi realizado com os sujeitos da Vila de São Jorge, localizada nas proximidades do Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros (PNCV), em Goiás. A população, formada basicamente por ex-garimpeiros, vive submetida a situações de difícil sobrevivência para a maioria. A intervenção dessa população nas situações do contexto social da Vila poderia contribuir para a constituição de melhores condições sociais; no entanto, essa intervenção é baixa no povoado. Para analisar o que favoreceria a maior participação da comunidade, desenvolvemos um estudo de caso que contou com a participação de 44 pessoas e cuja coleta dos dados ocorreu em períodos diferentes, durante três anos. Utilizamos instrumentos sugeridos para as pesquisas qualitativas e aplicamos o método da análise de conteúdo pela técnica da categorização. Assim, pela perspectiva da educação ambiental crítica, analisamos as concepções de meio ambiente, as concepções e práticas de educação ambiental e os interesses e a participação dos sujeitos. As inferências foram possíveis pelo significado das mensagens que emergiram de entrevistas com os sujeitos com o apoio de informações provenientes de outras fontes. A análise sobre os interesses e a participação dos sujeitos mostra uma predominância das dimensões naturais do espaço, o que favorece uma sinergia de ações para diminuir a degradação, mas que reflete uma percepção “ecologizada” das dificuldades sociais apreendidas na análise. Esses interesses e participação relacionam-se com a concepção predominante de meio ambiente como recurso que condiciona visões utilitaristas. Outras concepções/práticas, de educação ambiental, com perspectivas holísticas, de sensibilização e naturalistas, também aparecem na análise. No entanto, como não pretendem a explicitação das contradições em seus processos, não estimulam posturas de questionamentos e intervenção nas condições precárias de vida no lugar. Abstraídas, portanto, das múltiplas relações sociais, pouco contribuem para compreensões mais aprofundadas acerca dos problemas socioambientais. Visões críticas de espaço e interações, que são mais propícias ao estímulo da participação dos sujeitos, aparecem mesmo que minimamente entre os entrevistados. Situadas em dimensões sociais e políticas, tais visões poderiam contribuir para o desenvolvimento crítico do ser humano, o que é um fator importante na luta por melhores condições de vida. O estudo dessas categorias permitiu-nos concluir que os aspectos favoráveis a maior participação da comunidade são reduzidos. Mesmo assim, consideramos que tais aspectos propiciariam a participação, pois pressupõem a intervenção crítica dos sujeitos e podem ser ampliados a um maior número de pessoas pela interação uma com as outras, favorecida por espaços como o de associações na Vila de São Jorge. The paper resides on the field of critical environmental education, whose perspective is based upon the purposes of being revealing and committed to the transformation of social contexts and to the education of people capable of identifying, questioning, proposing solutions and acting before social environmental questions. The study took place among individuals from Vila de São Jorge, located near Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park (PNCV), in Goiás. The population is composed mainly by former miners and most of them are submitted to difficult survival situations. Interventions from those people in situations of social contexts of the Vila could contribute to the constitution of better living conditions; however, this intervention is low in the village. In order to analyze what would most favor the participation of the community, we have developed a case study which counted with 44 people and whose data collection took place in different periods of time during three years. We have used instruments recommended for qualitative research and have applied the content analysis method through the technique of categorization. Thus, through the perspective of critical environmental education, we have analyzed the conceptions of environment, the conceptions and practices of environmental education, and individuals’ interests and participations. Inferences were possible through the meaning of the messages which emerged from the interviews with the individuals with the support of information from other sources. The analysis about individuals’ interests and participation shows prevalence of natural dimensions of space, which favors a synergy of actions to decrease degradation, yet which reflects an ‘ecologized’ perspective of the social difficulties seen in the analysis. Those interests and participation relate to the prevailing conception of environment as resource which conditions utilitarian views. Other conceptions/practices of environmental education with holistic perspectives, of awareness and naturalist, also appear in the analysis. Nevertheless, once they do not intend to explicit the contradictions in their process, they do not stimulate questioning postures or interventions in the poor living conditions in the place. Therefore, abstracted from multiple social relations, they little contribute to comprehending social environmental problems more deeply. Critical views of space and interactions, which are propitious to the stimulus of individuals’ participation, appear among the interviewed people, even though minimally. Situated in social and political dimensions, such views could contribute to the critical development of the human being, which is an important factor in the fight for better living conditions. The study of those categories allowed us to conclude that the aspects the favor more participation from the community are reduced. Even though, we consider that such aspects could promote participation, once they assume critical interventions from the individuals, and they can be widened to a larger number of people through interaction with one another, favored by spaces such as the associations at Vila de São Jorge.
