Anuran amphibians use vocal signals as one of the most important forms of communication, emitted in various social contexts. Anuran species present specific vocalizations, however, acoustic parameters can vary by several factors. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of environmental, morphological and temporal factors on vocalizations of Dendropsophus minutus, through two approaches. We analyzed the acoustic variability of D. minutus along reproductive seasons, and afterwards, the effect of temperature on acoustic and body parameters of D. minutus. The analyzes were based on nine breeding seasons, carried out in individuals in a temporary pond in the municipality of Piracanjuba, state of Goiás, Brazil. We considered a mean of five advertisement calls per individual, being spectral (dominant and fundamental frequency) and temporal properties (call duration, pulse duration, number of pulses and call repetition rate) quantified. Air temperature data at the time of recording, snout-vent length and mass of individuals were also measured. Os anfíbios anuros utilizam os sinais vocais como uma das mais importantes formas de comunicação, emitidos em diversos contextos sociais. As espécies de anuros apresentam vocalizações específicas, entretanto, os parâmetros acústicos podem variar por inúmeros fatores. Assim, o objetivo do estudo foi investigar a influência dos fatores ambientais, morfológicos e temporais nas vocalizações de Dendropsophus minutus, por meio de duas abordagens. Analisou-se a variabilidade acústica de D. minutus, ao longo de estações reprodutivas, e posteriormente, o efeito da temperatura nos parâmetros acústicos e corporais de D. minutus. As análises foram baseadas em nove estações reprodutivas, em uma poça temporária no município de Piracanjuba, estado de Goiás, Brasil. Considerou-se em média, cinco cantos de anúncio por indivíduo, sendo quantificadas propriedades espectrais (frequência dominante e fundamental) e temporais (duração do canto, duração do pulso, número de pulsos e taxa de repetição dos cantos). Dados de temperatura do ar no momento da gravação, comprimento rostro-cloacal e massa dos indivíduos também foram aferidos. 51 f

Large rivers in tropical regions have strong variation of abiotic factors due to occurrence of flood pulses. Dams and natural events control the intensity and duration of these pulses. The hypothesis tested was that the Ostracoda community is persistent at regular pulses and more variable at extreme flood. Thus, the ostracods were monitored in a lentic environment of the upper Paraná River floodplain during 83 months (seven hydrologic cycles). The alteration of the water level directly influenced the abiotic variables, and these were correlated with the composition and abundance of ostracods (PCoA). The variability of the species composition was observed among several hydrological cycles, and only the extreme flood distinguished from its previous cycle. The absence of significant differences in community variability between succeeding periods indicates its persistence to natural pulses or short durations, probably because this community has developed adaptations that minimize its effects. The long duration and oscillation of the extreme flood influenced the variation of the environmental conditions reflecting the greater variability of the composition of ostracods in this hydrological period. Grandes rios em regiões tropicais têm marcante variação dos fatores abióticos devido a ocorrência dos pulsos de inundação. Barramentos e eventos naturais controlam a intensidade e duração desses pulsos. A hipótese testada foi que a comunidade de Ostracoda é persistente a pulsos regulares e mais variável em extrema cheia. Assim, os ostrácodes foram monitorados em um ambiente lêntico da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná durante 83 meses (sete ciclos hidrológicos). A alteração do nível da água influenciou diretamente as variáveis abióticas e estas foram correlacionadas com a composição e abundância de ostrácodes (PCoA). A variabilidade da composição de espécies foi observada entre diversos períodos dos ciclos hidrológicos, sendo que apenas a extrema cheia diferenciou de seu ciclo antecedente. A ausência de diferenças significativas na variabilidade da comunidade entre períodos que se sucedem denota persistência a pulsos naturais ou de curtas durações, provavelmente porque esta comunidade desenvolveu adaptações que minimizam seus efeitos, permitindo a manutenção das populações. A longa duração e oscilação da cheia extrema atuou na variação das condições ambientais refletindo na maior variabilidade da composição de ostrácodes neste período hidrológico . 37 f

Understanding the regulatory factors that influences the structuring and establishment of communities has been common in ecological studies. This thesis had as a research area lakes of the upper Paraná River floodplain. In the first approach of this thesis, we evaluate the influence of hydrological periods on the convergence and divergence of functional traits of testate amoebae in a long period of time. There was a predominance of convergence of functional traits in flooding and divergence in the drought. Furthermore, the functional traits were strongly influenced by the temporal changes of the environmental variables linked to the food resources. In the second approach, we verified the effect of temporal variation in the productivity variables on testate amoebae community in the studied floodplain lakes. We seek also to identify taxa indicators increase and decrease the concentrations of these variables over time. The temporal variation influenced the productivity of variables, the frequency and abundance of testate amoebae community, alternating the establishment of taxa. As a result, it was possible to identify indicator species of increase and decrease the concentrations of these environmental variables. In summary, the results of this thesis contributed to the knowledge of the testate amoebae ecology in aquatic environments, considering that addressed the distribution of functional traits of these organisms and their potential bioindicator aquatic ecosystems. A busca pelo entendimento dos fatores reguladores que influenciam a estruturação e o estabelecimento das comunidades tem sido frequente em estudos ecológicos. O estudo foi realizado em lagoas da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná. Avaliou-se a influência dos períodos hidrológicos sobre a convergência e divergência dos traços funcionais de amebas testáceas em uma lagoa durante um longo período de tempo. Houve a predominância da convergência de traços funcionais na cheia e divergência na seca. Os traços funcionais foram fortemente influenciados pela variação temporal das variáveis ambientais relacionadas aos recursos alimentares. Verificou-se o efeito da variação temporal das variáveis de produtividade sobre a comunidade de amebas testáceas, em lagoas da planície de inundação estudada. Foram identificados os táxons indicadores do aumento e diminuição das concentrações dessas variáveis ao longo do tempo. A variação temporal influenciou as variáveis de produtividade, sobre a frequência e abundância da comunidade de amebas testáceas, alternando o estabelecimento dos táxons. Foi possível identificar as espécies indicadoras do aumento e diminuição das concentrações dessas variáveis ambientais. A análise dos resultados obtidos contribuiu para o conhecimento da ecologia da comunidade de amebas testáceas em ambientes aquáticos, tendo em vista que a abordagem e da distribuição dos traços funcionais desses organismos e do seu potencial bioindicador das condições ambientais. 58 f

Among the different species of fish, the life cycle is synchronized to avoid or exploit flows with magnitudes variables. For example, the natural frequency of high or low flow trigger the different stages of the life cycle, such as spawning, incubation of eggs, the initial development and the lateral migration in the flood plain. However, the timing of each of these characteristics with the attributes of floods, strategies presented depends on the species, being complex events and their interdependence has not yet fully understood. In this study it was found over five reproductive periods, the effect of flow regime and its components on the dynamics of ichthyoplankton in this Ivinheima river and two ponds connected to this system. The variation in the abundance of fish eggs and larvae over a reproductive period and was verified that there were changes in the composition of the assemblage and its relationship with environmental variables were assessed. For the five reproductive periods, the attributes of the flood pulse were calculated by PULSO software and soon after were summarized by a PCA. Possible differences in the density of eggs and larvae between reproductive periods, and in only one period were tested with Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance. For the similarity of patterns in the assembly of larvae were used Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling. To test the relationship of the biota of the attributes with the hydrological variability and environmental variables were used Spearman correlations. Higher densities of eggs were recorded in Ivinheima river in flood periods. The density of larvae was similar in the environments, and the Finado Raimundo lagoon had greater abundance in the river there was a predominance of migratory species, as in the lagoons was the domain of sedentary species. The assemblage of larvae presented is structured in the months in which they were checked the flood pulses, migratory species organized in the early months and in the later months predominant species with different reproductive strategies. It can also be noted that dry and intermediate years have importance for the reproduction of species, mainly sedentary. In the reproductive period, higher densities of larvae occur in the months of highest precipitation, tests showed significant differences between the months and revealed that migratory species were related to the months of highest precipitation. The densities of eggs and larvae, as well as some migratory species were positively correlated with rainfall, while the temperature was negatively correlated with the migratory. We conclude that the most extensive floods favored fish reproduction, ascertained by the greatest abundance of eggs and larvae in these periods, as well as to favor migratory species and also caused the increase of wealth in some habitats. For the reproductive phase is concluded that the seasonality of reproduction of the species (especially migratory) presents synchrony with the rainy periods. On the other hand in the months with low rainfall occurs playing some species with large reproductive plasticity. Entre as diferentes espécies de peixes, o ciclo de vida está sincronizado para evitar ou explorar os fluxos com magnitudes variáveis. Assim, as flutuações sazonais no nível do rio desencadeiam as diferentes etapas do ciclo de vida das espécies, como a desova, a incubação de ovos, o desenvolvimento inicial e a migração lateral na planície de inundação. Porém, o sincronismo de cada uma destas etapas com os atributos das cheias depende das estratégias apresentadas pelas espécies, sendo eventos complexos sua interdependência ainda não totalmente compreendida. Ao longo de cinco períodos reprodutivos observou-se o efeito do regime de cheias e de seus componentes sobre a dinâmica do ictioplâncton presente no rio Ivinheima e em duas lagoas conectadas a este sistema. Foi avaliada a variação na abundância de ovos e larvas de peixes ao longo de um período reprodutivo, bem como verificado se ocorreram modificações na composição da assembléia e sua relação com as variáveis ambientais. Para os cinco períodos reprodutivos, os atributos do pulso de inundação foram calculados pelo software PULSO e, logo após, foram sumarizados por uma PCA. As possíveis diferenças na densidade de ovos e larvas entre os períodos reprodutivos, e em apenas um período, foram testadas através de análises permutacionais. Para os padrões de similaridade na assembleia de larvas foram usados escalonamentos multidimensionais não métricos. Para testar as relações dos atributos da biota com a variabilidade hidrológica e, com as variáveis ambientais, foram usadas correlações de Spearman. Maiores densidades de ovos foram registradas no rio Ivinheima, nos períodos de cheias. A densidade de larvas foi semelhante nos ambientes, sendo que a lagoa do finado Raimundo teve maior abundância. No rio Ivinheima houve o predomínio de espécies migradoras, enquanto nas lagoas houve o domínio de espécies sedentárias. A assembleia de larvas apresentou estruturação temporal durante os pulsos de inundação, sendo que as espécies migradoras se organizaram nos primeiros meses e as demais nos meses mais tardios. Observou-se, também, que anos secos e intermediários foram importantes para a reprodução de espécies, principalmente sedentárias. No periodo reprodutivo, maiores densidades de larvas ocorreram nos meses de maior precipitação, com diferenças significativas entre os meses. As densidades de ovos e de larvas, bem como de algumas espécies migradoras estiveram correlacionadas positivamente com a precipitação, enquanto que a temperatura se relacionou de forma negativa com os migradores. As cheias mais extensas favoreceram a reprodução dos peixes, com destaque para as espécies migradoras, ao passo que e a sazonalidade da reprodução destas espécies apresenta sincronia com as épocas mais chuvosas. Ainda que nos meses com baixa precipitação ocorre a reprodução de algumas espécies, as quais apresentam grande plasticidade reprodutiva. 70 f

The structure of zooplankton community in the Upper Paraná River floodplain has examined for two decades, and significant contributions have been made regarding the influence of biotic and abiotic factors on these. Beyond environmental conditions and food availability, the species diversity of a community may also be influenced by predation. Studies concerning trophic ecology of fish, in lakes at this ecosystem, pointed for the occurrence of the zooplankton in the diet of many fish species. The present study assessed the influence of abiotic conditions, food availability and predation on the diversity of zooplankton community, in marginal lakes from this floodplain. We agree that the predation is predominant to other factors on the zooplankton diversity. Sampling was performed every three months from 2000 to 2009, in the pelagic region of six marginal lakes from the floodplain. The limnological variables were preponderant to explain the variations in zooplankton diversity, mainly during the years with larger amplitudes of potamophase. Only in 2008 the species richness estimated via rarefaction presented an inverse relationship with fish biomass. The great contribution of rotifers and testate amoebae for the diversity values seems to support the idea that the predation by small sized. A estrutura da comunidade zooplanctônica, na planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná é estudada há duas décadas e importantes contribuições foram realizadas a respeito da influência de fatores bióticos e abióticos sobre a mesma. Além das condições ambientais e da disponibilidade de alimento, a diversidade específica de uma comunidade pode ser influenciada pela predação. Estudos a respeito da ecologia trófica da ictiofauna forrageira, em lagoas deste ecossistema, apontaram para a ocorrência do zooplâncton como item da dieta de muitas espécies. Esse trabalho avaliou a influência das condições abióticas, da disponibilidade de alimento e da predação sobre a diversidade zooplanctônica, em lagoas marginais desta planície. Foi pressuposto que a predação exerça influência preponderante sobre as variações deste atributo da comunidade nestes ambientes. As amostragens ocorreram, trimestralmente, entre os anos de 2002 a 2009, na região pelágica de seis lagoas marginais da planície. As variáveis limnológicas foram prioritárias para explicar as variações da diversidade zooplanctônica, principalmente nos anos com maiores amplitudes de potamofase. Somente no ano de 2008, a riqueza estimada de espécies por rarefação apresentou uma relação inversa com a biomassa de peixes. A grande contribuição dos rotíferos e amebas testáceas para os valores de diversidade parece suportar a idéia de que a predação por peixes de pequeno porte exerceu uma influência direta sobre a estruturação da comunidade. 41 f

This research aimed to evaluate the spatial and temporal variation of the periphytic algae community within two environments of the lower Doce River: Juparanã Lagoon and Pequeno River. Samplings were carried out every three months from August 2004 to May 2005 at both sites. Natural substrata of Eichhornia azurea (Sw.) Kunth petioles were collected from the sites. The community was analyzed according to species richness, frequency of occurrence, density of organisms, abundance and dominancy. Eighty-six taxa were recorded in the lagoon, and the density of organisms varied from 20,595 ind cm-2 (May/05) to 88,712 ind cm-2 (Nov/04). Eighty-three taxa were recorded in the river, and the density of organisms varied from 16,049 ind cm-2 (Feb/05) to 71,663 ind cm-2 (Aug/04). At both sites, the classes that predominated qualitatively were Cyanophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Zygnemaphyceae, in which filamentous and unicellular forms dominated, followed by colonial forms. Quantitatively, the most representative classes were Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae. A spatial variation was not observed. Precipitation, water temperature, electric conductivity and transparency were the variables that most oscillated according to seasonal variation (dry or rainy season). They also presented a greater number of significant correlations with the biological variables, showing evidence of temporal heterogeneity. A pesquisa objetivou avaliar a variação espacial e temporal da comunidade de algas perifíticas em dois ambientes do baixo rio Doce: lagoa Juparanã e rio Pequeno. Foram realizadas coletas trimestrais (agosto/04 a maio/05) em duas estações amostrais, uma na lagoa e outra no rio. Foram coletados pecíolos de Eichhornia azurea (Sw.) Kunth. Os atributos da comunidade analisados foram: riqueza de táxons, freqüência de ocorrência, densidade, abundância e dominância. Na lagoa Juparanã, foram registrados 86 táxons e a densidade variou de 20.592 ind cm-2 (mai/05) a 88.712 ind cm-2 (nov/04). No rio Pequeno, foram registrados 83 táxons e a densidade variou de 16.049 ind cm-2 (fev/05) a 71.663 ind cm-2 (ago/04). Em ambos os ambientes, as classes predominantes qualitativamente foram Cyanophyceae, Bacillariophyceae e Zygnemaphyceae, havendo domínio das formas filamentosas e unicelulares seguidas das coloniais. As classes Cyanophyceae e Bacillariophyceae foram mais representativas quantitativamente. Não houve variação espacial. Pluviosidade, temperatura da água, condutividade elétrica e transparência foram as variáveis que mais oscilaram conforme a estação (seca ou chuvosa) e as que apresentaram maior número de correlações significativas com as variáveis biológicas, evidenciando heterogeneidade temporal.
