We report the first characterization of the anion states related to the dissociative processes in two compounds, Resveratrol (RV) and Resorcinol (RS), employing both scattering and bound states techniques. RV is a very challenging system for this kind of study in view of its size. Our results point out a valence bound state, three shape resonances and a mixed-character resonance. The zero-energy thresholds reported elsewhere and the presently calculated resonance spectrum are consistent with the mass spectroscopy data. In particular, with the production of H2 (reaction that could account for the antioxidant activity) at nearly zero energy which could proceed from a vibrational Feshbach resonances arising from a valence bound state. We also investigated the RS subunit of the RV, which could be a less computationally expensive prototype for the production of H2. We obtained two shape resonances and a mixed-character resonance. There is a correspondence between the anion states of RV and RS, and even between the thresholds, but the lack of anion bound states for the smaller molecules should suppress the H2-formation channel at 0 eV. Esse trabalho apresenta o primeiro estudo dos estados aniônicos de baixa energia do Resveratrol (RV) e Resorcinol (RS) através de técnicas de estado ligado e espalhamento. O RV representa um sistema muito desafiante computacionalmente devido ao seu tamanho. Nossos resultados apontaram um estado de valência ligado, três ressonâncias de forma e uma ressonância de caráter misto. Os limiares de dissociação (sem efeitos termodinâmicos) presentes na literatura e o espectro ressonante obtido são consistentes com resultados experimentais de espectroscopia de massa. Em particular, a produção de H2 (produto da dissociação que pode ser responsável pela atividade antioxidante) para energias muito próximas de zero poderia ser proveniente de ressonâncias vibracionais de Feshbach decorrentes do estado ligado de valência. Também investigamos a subunidade RS do RV, que representa um protótipo computacionalmente mais viável para a produção de H2. Obtivemos duas ressonâncias de forma e uma ressonância de caráter misto. Observamos que existe uma correspondência entre os estados aniônicos de RV e RS, até mesmo entre os limiares de dissociação, mas a falta de um estado ligado do ânion para as moléculas menores deve suprimir o canal de formação de H2 em 0 eV.

Neste trabalho, os estados do ânion de 8-oxo-guanina e Guanina foram caracterizados por meio das ressonâncias na seção de choque integral de espalhamento, e foi realizada uma discussão comparativa com resultados calculados e publicados para a Guanina, com o objetivo de encontrar aspectos que possam indicar processos dissociativos induzidos por captura eletrônica dissociativa (DEA), visando a entender se a presença da 8-oxo-guanina na cadeia de DNA pode gerar mais radicais reativos ao sofrer reações induzidas por elétrons e consequentemente, produzir efeito protetor às células sadias quando expostas à radiação ionizante. O método multicanal de Schwinger foi utilizado nos cálculos de espalhamento, na aproximação de núcleos fixos, com a descrição da função de onda de espalhamento nas aproximações estático-troca e estático-troca mais polarização. Foram encontradas quatro ressonâncias com caráter pi* para 8-oxo-guanina e Guanina sendo que as ressonâncias, pi1* e pi4*, apresentaram estabilização e indicaram aumento do tempo de vida em relação aos respectivos estados aniônicos da Guanina, podendo favorecer processos dissociativos na 8-oxo-guanina. Também foi caracterizado o estado ligado por dipolo para as duas moléculas, através do método CCSD(T), e concluiu-se que a forma oxidativa estabiliza o estado ligado por dipolo em 80 meV. Aspectos relacionados com a captura eletrônica dissociativa foram discutidos, para eliminação de H e NH2 , na Guanina em comparação com resultados experimentais publicados de intensidade de DEA e com auxilio de cálculos de estrutura eletrônica semi-empiricos (G4MP2) e multiconfiguracionais (CASSCF) para obtenção de limiares de dissociação e acoplamentos não adiabáticos. Conclui-se que as eliminações de H e NH2 podem ser iniciadas por meio das ressonâncias pi1* e pi2* com a participação de acoplamentos entre estados pi*/DBS permitindo que ressonâncias vibracionais de Feshbach participem do processo dissociativo através de acoplamentos DBS/sigma* . Para a eliminação de NH2 também conclui-se que uma reação recombinativa deve ocorrer visto que a eliminação simples do grupo NH2 não é energeticamente possível. Por fim, foi realizado um estudo semelhante na 8-oxo-guanina, em comparação com os resultados obtidos para G, em razão de não existirem resultados de intensidade de DEA publicados para a 8-oxo-guanina, visando compreender se esses processos dissociativos também podem ocorrer. Os limiares de dissociação de H e NH2 e os acoplamentos não adiabáticos possuem menores energias na 8-oxo-guanina. A dissociação desses fragmentos, em energias abaixo de 1.6 eV, devem ser iniciadas através de ressonâncias vibracionais de Feshbach, caso ocorram. Contudo, não é possível concluir se a 8-oxo-guanina pode apresentar a formação de um maior número de radicais ao interagir com elétrons sem os resultados experimentais de medidas de intensidade de DEA. In this work, the anion states of 8-oxo-guanine and Guanine were described through the resonances in the elastic scattering integral cross section. A comparative analysis between the published and obtained data for Guanine with the 8-oxo-guanine data was done afterwards to find evidences that suggest dissociation processes which undergo dissociative electron attachment (DEA), aiming to better understand whether 8-oxo-guanine gives rise more reactive free radicals on DNA than Guanine by electron-induced reactions and hence protect the healthy cells from ionising radiation. Scattering calculations were performed by the Schwinger Multichannel Method, in the fixed nuclei approximation, using the static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarisation approximations to describe the scattering wavefunction. Four pi* shape resonances were identified in the integral cross section for both molecules. The resonances pi1* and pi4* in 8-oxo-guanine are more stable and exhibited higher lifetime than Guanine which suggests dissociation processes may be preferred in 8-oxo-guanine. The dipole bound states were described for both molecules using the CCSD(T) method which resulted that the oxidazed form stabilizes the dipole bound state in 80 meV. Some evidences related to DEA were investigated for H and NH2 elimination in Guanine, comparing the experimental ion yield data to the semi- empirical (G4MP2) and multiconfigurational (CASSCF) electronic structure calculations applied to obtain dissociation thresholds and non-adiabatic couplings, respectively. The H and NH2 elimination may be triggered by the resonances pi1* and pi2* with involvement of pi*/DBS couplings which allows vibrational Feshbach resonances to mediate the dissociation processes through DBS/sigma* couplings. In the case of NH2 elimination is also concluded that a recombination reaction is preferred than the simple elimination of the NH2 group since the dissociation takes place in lower energies than the dissociation threshold for the simple elimination. Finally, the same study was done for 8-oxo-guanine comparing to the previous results obtained for Guanine due to the lack of experimental ion yield measurements for 8-oxo-guanine to comprehend whether the dissociation processes may take place in oxidized form. The thresholds for elimination of H and NH2 , and the non-adiabatic couplings exhibit lower energies in 8-oxo-guanine. The dissociation of these fragments, in energies below 1.6 eV, may be driven by the formation of vibrational Feshbach resonances which undergo dissociation through DBS/sigma* couplings. Nonetheless, the analysis of the efficiency for 8-oxo-guanine fragmentation by interaction with low energy electrons depends on the measurements of the DEA ion yield and for this reason, is not possible to conclude that 8-oxo-guanine may provide protection to the healthy cells from ionising radiation.

Os danos causados em biomoléculas devido a colisões de elétrons de baixas energias são alvos de muitos estudos teóricos e experimentais. Uma classe de interesse particular dessas biomoléculas são unidades de fitas simples de DNA e RNA. Nesse contexto, podemos estudar o problema da colisão através de um modelo mnimo, adotando nucleotdeos (ou subunidades) como alvo do processo colisional. Além da capacidade que as bases nitrogenadas possuem de capturar o elétron e desencadear fenômenos dissociativos, as mesmas também podem atuar como sensitizadoras em processos radioterapêuticos, devido a alta capacidade de gerarem radicais livres alta- mente reativos. A partir disso, muitos esforços vêm sendo aplicados para se investigar possveis novos sensibilizadores em processos radioterápicos, como 5-halouracilas ou outras uracilas modificadas. Nesse contexto, o trabalho realizado por Bowen et al. aponta os compostos 5-OCNU e 5-SCNU como sendo possveis candidatos. O projeto se propõe a caracterizar os estados aniônicos que iniciam os processos dissociativos nos dois compostos, usando técnicas de espalhamento e técnicas de estados ligados. As motivações acerca do problema de espalhamento entre elétrons e classes particulares de biomoléculas são de natureza biológica. Sendo assim, alguns resultados obtidos para moléculas em fase gasosa podem ser um primeiro passo para o estudo das mesmas propriedades fsicas em solução aquosa, mimetizando o ambiente biológico no qual se desencadeiam processos fsicos de interesse. Portanto, em seguida, propomos um novo modelo para a inclusão de efeitos de solvente nas descrições da captura eletrônica em baixas energias. Nosso estudo se baseia na combinação de simulações clássicas de Monte Carlo e técnicas de espalhamento eletrônico. Por último, apresento também uma abordagem dependente do tempo baseada em técnicas MQC (mixed quantum-classical dynamics) para a dinâmica do ânion temporário da 5-bromouracila, um radiossensibilizador já bem conhecido. A dinâmica nuclear de estados ressonantes constitui um problema em aberto, e os desenvolvimentos realizados significam um novo passo em direção a novas metodologias. The damage to biomolecules due to low-energy electron collisions is the subject of many theoretical and experimental studies. A particular interesting class of biomolecules are single stranded units of DNA and RNA. In this context, we can study the collisional problem through a minimal model, considering nucleotides (or subunits) as the target of the scattering process. In addition to their ability to capture the electron and trigger dissociative phenomena, they also act as sensitizers in radiotherapeutic processes due to the high capacity of generating reactive free radicals. Many efforts have been applied to investigate possible new sensitizers in radiotherapeutic processes, such as 5-halouracils or another modified uracils. In this context, the work by Bowen et al. points to 5-OCNU and 5-SCNU compounds as potential candidates. The work proposed the characterization of the anion states related to the dissociative processes in this two compounds, employing both scattering and bound states techniques. The main motivations about the scattering problem between electrons and particular classes of biomolecules are related to biological interests. Thus, some results obtained for gas phase molecules can be a first step to the study of the same physical properties in aqueous solution, describing the biological environment in which physical processes are triggered. Therefore, we present a new methodology to include the solvent effects in the characterization of the electron attachment at low energies. Our study is based on the combination of classical Monte Carlo simulations and electron scattering techniques. Finally, we also present a new novel on the time-dependent dynamics of the low lying negative ions of 5-bromouracil, a well stablished radiosensitizer. Nuclear dynamics of resonant states are an open problem, and our developments based on MQC (mixed quantum-classical dynamics) mean a new step toward new methodologies.

Nas últimas décadas o interesse na física e na química dos sistemas positrônicos têm sido cada vez maior. O avanço nas técnicas de produção e manipulação de pósitrons permitiu importantes resultados experimentais no estudo de átomos de positrônio (Ps) em baixas energias, e simulações dos traços positrônicos em água sugerem a ocorrência de estados de equilíbrio termodinâmico do Ps solvatado em água. Neste trabalho desenvolvemos um campo de força para a interação Ps-água, que permite a realização de simulações de Monte Carlo do Ps solvatado em equilíbrio termodinâmico. O campo de força foi construdo a partir de cálculos precisos para o coeficiente de dispersão da interação Ps-O, e também de modelos para a determinação desses coeficientes. Através deste campo de força realizamos simulações de Monte Carlo determinando propriedades termodinâmicas e estruturais do líquido. As configurações estatisticamente descorrelacionadas, representativas do ensemble NpT, foram geradas a partir das simulações de Monte Carlo. Posteriormente, realizamos cálculos quânticos para as configurações do líquido utilizando o método Any Particle Molecular Orbital. Os cálculos concentraram-se nas energias dos orbitais eletrônicos e positrônicos, simplesmente ocupados, as quais permitem estimativas das energias de ionização vertical do átomo de positrônio hidratado. In the last decades the interest in the physics and chemistry of positronic systems has increased. The advance in the techniques of production and manipulation of positrons has allowed important experimental results in the research on positronium (Ps) atoms at low energies, and simulations of positron slowing down in water suggests the occurrence of thermalized solvated Ps atoms along the positron tracks. We developed a force field for Ps-water interactions, which allows for Monte Carlo simulations of the solvated Ps at thermodynamical equilibrium. The force field was built from precise calculations for the dispersion coefficient of the Ps-O interaction, and also models for determining these coefficients. Through this force field we perform Monte Carlo simulations determining thermodynamic and structural properties of the liquid. Statistically uncorrelated Ps-solvent configurations, representative of the NpT ensemble, were generated from the MC simulations. Subsequently, we performed quantum mechanical calculations for the Ps-solvent configurations employing the APMO method. The calculations focused on the energies of the electronic and positronic singly occupied orbitals, which allow for estimates of the vertical detachment energies of the hydrated Ps atom.

Este trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre taxas de aniquilação de pósitrons em gases moleculares por meio do cálculo do parâmetro de aniquilação Zeff. O modelo Gribakin-Lee (GL) formula de maneira fenomenológica um mecanismo de captura do pósitron mediado por uma interação dipolar, descrevendo uma contribuição ressonante para Zeff dos modos vibracionais ativos-IR da molécula. Este modelo concorda muito bem quando testado aos halometanos no experimento com feixes de pósitrons, porém, falha quando aplicado ao experimento com pósitrons térmicos. Neste contexto, foram testadas algumas hipóteses para explicar a discordância entre o modelo GL aplicado ao experimento com feixes de pósitrons e ao experimento com pósitrons térmicos. Foi mostrado como o modelo GL pode ser obtido como um caso particular do formalismo dos operadores de projeção de Feshbach. As hipóteses testadas para explicar a discrepância entre os modelos foram: (i) desconsiderar a aproximação de largura zero, para uma convolução mais realista do parâmetro de aniquilação Zeff com a distribuição energética dos pósitrons; (ii) incluir combinações de modos vibracionais e overtones IR-ativos, além de modos com atividade Raman no cálculo de Zeff térmico; (iii) incluir ressonâncias rotacionais no modelo GL; e (iv) propor um modelo simplificado para a densidade eletrônica considerando a sua dependência em relação às coordenadas nucleares da molécula. Verificou-se que considerar larguras finitas na convolução de Zeff térmico e Zeff para o feixe não leva a uma diferença significativa em comparação com o modelo GL, sendo legítimo a utilização da aproximação de largura zero para as ressonâncias vibracionais de Feshbach. Quanto à inclusão de overtones e combinações ativos-IR, verificou-se que apesar deste método ser de extrema importância para ajustar Zeff no caso do experimento com feixes de pósitrons para as moléculas de metanol e etileno, a influência desta contribuição para Zeff térmico é modesta. Moléculas com baixíssimas energias de ligação, como o CH3F, podem apresentar uma possível contribuição rotacional para Zeff, representando quase que a totalidade da contribuição ressonante ao parâmetro de aniquilação. This work presents a study of the rates of annihilation of positrons in molecular gases by calculating the annihilation parameter Zeff. The Gribakin-Lee (GL) model formulates a dipole-interaction-mediated positron capture mechanism, describing a resonant contribution to Zeff of the active-IR vibrational modes of the molecule. This model agrees very well when tested to the halomethanes in the experiment with positron beams, but fails when applied to the experiment with thermal positrons. In this context, some hypotheses were tested to explain the discrepancy between the GL model applied to the experiment with positron beams and the experiment with thermal positrons. It was shown how the GL model can be obtained as a particular case of the Feshbach projection operators formalism. The hypotheses tested to explain the discrepancy between the models were: (i) to disregard the zero-width approximation for a more realistic convolution of the annihilation parameter Zeff with the energy distribution of the positrons; (ii) to include combinations of IR-active vibrational modes and overtones, in addition to modes with Raman activity in the calculation of thermal Zeff; (iii) to include rotational resonances in the GL model and; (iv) to propose a simplified model for the electron density considering its dependence on the nuclear coordinates of the molecule. It has been found that considering finite widths in the convolution of thermal Zeff and Zeff for the beams does not lead to a significant difference from the GL model, being legitimate the use of the zero width approximation for the vibrational Feshbach resonances. Regarding the inclusion of overtones and combinations IR-active, it was found that although this method is of extreme importance to fit Zeff in the case of the experiment with positron beams for methanol and ethylene, the influence of this contribution to thermal Zeff is modest. Molecules with very low binding energies, such as CH3F, may present a possible rotational contribution to Zeff, representing almost the entire resonant contribution to the annihilation parameter.

Este trabalho apresenta o primeiro estudo dos estados aniônicos de baixa energia da para-Benzoquinona (p-BQ) por meio de cálculos de espalhamento elástico de elétrons pela molécula neutra. Foi utilizado o método multicanal de Schwinger implementado com pseudopotenciais de Bachelet, Hamann e Schlüter, na aproximação de núcleos fixos, e nas aproximações estático-troca e estático-troca mais polarização. As seções de choque integrais foram calculadas em duas geometrias do alvo, otimizadas para o estado fundamental da molécula neutra e do ânion. Os estados aniônicos encontrados foram aracterizados e comparados com resultados experimentais, realizados com a técnica de espectroscopia de transferência eletrônica (ETS). Três estados * foram observados, sendo um ligado e dois metaestáveis, em acordo com os experimentos. Uma ressonância de Feshbach foi encontrada nos cálculos, tal qual é observada experimentalmente e sugerida em diversos estudos teóricos de estado ligado. Acredita-se que a aproximação utilizada para descrever estados excitados do alvo poderá ser reconsiderada, em que é sugerida uma proximação mais sofisticada, a ser utilizada em cálculos futuros. Com este estudo, é possível uma melhor compreensão dos resultados experimentais ETS, assim como é permitida uma interpretação de estudos teóricos sobre os estados aniônicos da p-BQ. Ademais, este trabalho possibilita próximos estudos de espalhamento envolvendo quinonas mais complexas. This work present the first study of low-energy anionic states in para-benzoquinone (p-BQ) by electron scattering calculations. The elastic scattering calculations were done in the fixed-nuclei approximation, with the Schwinger multichannel method implemented with pseudopotentials of Bachelet, Hamann and Schlüter, in the static-exchange and in the static-exchange plus polarization approximations. The integral cross sections were performed in two target geometries optimized for the neutral and anion ground states. The anionic states found were characterized and compared with experimental results obtained by electron transfer spectroscopy (ETS). Three * states were observed, a bound state and two metastable, in good agreement with experimental results. A Feshbach resonance was found in calculations, also it is observed experimentally and it was suggested in several theoretical studies of bound state. It is believed that the approach used to describe the target excited states can be reconsidered, as it is suggested a more sophisticated approach to be used in future calculations. With this study, a better understanding of experimental results ETS is possible, as it allowed an interpretation of theoretical studies of the anionic states of p-BQ. Moreover, this work enables further scattering studies involving more complex quinones.

Neste trabalho, construímos um arranjo óptico para realizar medidas de espalhamento de luz dinâmico (Dynamic Light Scattering - DLS). Após o processo de montagem, o experimento foi calibrado por meio de soluções padrão de nanoesferas de poliestireno dispersas em água deionizada. Após a calibração, investigamos sistemas mais complexos como cristais líquidos nemáticos uniaxias, bem como misturas ferronemáticas. A primeira etapa dos estudos teve como objetivo investigar o comportamento das difusividades dos modos hidrodinmicos splay e twist, em função da concentração iônica das misturas. As amostras preparadas se diferenciavam apenas pela quantidades de sal em suas composições. Observamos um aumento em Dsplay e diminuição de Dtwist com o aumento na concentração de sal. Esses efeitos são multifatoriais e podem estar relacionados à blindagem eletrostática intermicelar, favorecendo a aproximaao entre micelas vizinhas. O efeito de backflow também é um fenômeno relevante que minimiza os efeitos dissipativos e está associado as distorções de splay. Por fim, foram realizadas medidas de DLS em misturas ferronemáticas liotrópicas uniaxiais, com o objetivo de investigar o comportamento das difusividades dos modos hidrodinâmicos em função da concentração de nanopartículas magnéticas (ferrofluido FF). O alinhamento do diretor é bastante favorecido com a presença das nanopartículas, como previsto na literatura [32]. Além disso, em baixas concentrações (< 10^13 grãos/mL) as nanopartículas não interferem nos espectros de autocorrelação, sendo possível observar as flutuações orientacionais do diretor nemático. Dessa forma, a incorporação de grãos magnéticos auxiliou nas medidas de DLS, principalmente no que diz respeito à seleção dos modos hidrodinâmicos. Os resultados mostraram que, em fase NC , as difusividades Dsplay e Dbend diminuíram com o aumento da concentração de FF. Por outro lado, a difusividade Dtwist praticamente não foi afetada com a incorporação de FF. No entanto, na fase ND, foi possível observar quedas nos valores de Dsplay e Dtwist , comparando com a mistura sem FF (Nd3). In the present dissertation we made a Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) experimental setup as well as their clalibration. We use standard aqueous solution with polystyrene nanospheres, with 20 nm and 200 nm of mean diameter, for system calibation. After this process we investigated more complex systems as uniaxial lyotropic liquid crystals mixtures and ferronematic samples. Firstly, we investigate the behaviour of hydrodynamic modes as a function of ionic concentration. The experiments showed that D splay increases and D twist decreases when ionic concentration increases. There are many factors around this behaviour, one of them is the electrostatic shielding forming between nearby micelles that may favours the approximation between tham. The backflow effect also is a relevante phenomenon that minimize the viscous dissipation process of splay distortion. This effect tends to increase with ionic concentration. We also investigated the hydrodynamic behaviour of uniaxial lyotropic mixtures doped with magnetic nanoparticles (ferrofluid - FF). They were characterized by DLS measure-ments to investigated the role of dopping concetration on splay, twist, and bend distortions. According to our results the nanoparticles favours the director alignment by magnetic field as we can found in the literature [32]. Thus, the DLS measurements had been favored by addition of magnetics grains, particularly with regard to the selection role of hydrodynamic modes. Moreover, we have seen that the director relaxation process is not abruptly affected with incorporation of nanoparticles, at low quantities (< 10^13 grain/mL). In NC phase, Dsplay and Dbend tends to decreases when the FF concetrations increases. However the behavior of Dtwist is not completly clear. In ND phase, the addition of nanoparticles further decreases Dsplay and Dtwist , comparing with the free nanoparticles sample (Nd3).

Absorção e Emissão de radiação eletromagnética por moléculas na região do UV-Vis fornece informações sobre os estados eletrônicos excitados, sendo propriedades de grande interesse devido a sua relação com processos biológicos, bem como suas possíveis aplicações em diagnósticos e tecnologia. Essas propriedades são sensíveis ao meio em que as moléculas se encontram, tornando-se assim natural a busca por métodos teóricos que possibilitam descrever essas interações. Neste trabalho, nós usamos a metodologia Sequential-Quantum Mechanics/Molecular Mechanics para estudar o espectro de absorção e de emissão de moléculas de relevância biológica, quando em solução. Simulações clássicas Monte Carlo foram usadas pra construir uma configuração eletrostática média do líquido para posterior cálculo das propriedades, feito através dos métodos multiconfiguracionais CASSCF e CASPT2. Cuidados especiais foram tomados para incluir a polarização eletrônica que o soluto sofre devido à presença do solvente. Nossa contribuição é a adaptação do método do Gradiente de Energia Livre para permitir a obtenção de geometrias de estados excitados do soluto em solução. A técnica foi implementada em um programa e aplicada com sucesso nos sistemas estudados. As perspectivas agora se abrem para a obtenção de intersecções cônicas em meio solvente, permitindo assim o estudo de decaimentos não-radiativos em sistemas solvatados. Absorption and emission of electromagnetic radiation by molecules in the UV-Vis region yields information about the electronic excited states, being properties of great interest due its relation with biological process, as well as its possible applications in diagnostics and technology. These properties are sensible to the environment in which the molecules are, making natural the search for theoretical methods that describe these interactions. In this work, we have used the Sequential-Quantum Mechanics/Molecular Mechanics methodology to study the spectrum of absorption and emission of molecules of biological relevance, when in solution. Classical Monte Carlo simulations were carried out to construct an average solvent electrostatic configuration and used to represent the liquid in posterior quantum mechanics calculation of the properties, performed by using the multiconfigurational methods CASSCF and CASPT2. Special cares were taken to include the electronic polarization of the solute due the solvent. Our contribution is the adaptation of the Free Energy Gradient method to allow the determination of the solute excited states geometries in solution. The method was implemented in a computer program and successfully applied in the systems studied. The perspectives are now open to the calculation of conical intersection in solvent environment, enabling the study of nonradioactive decays in solvated systems.

A fotodinâmica de sistemas moleculares representa um dos principais tópicos atuais da físico-química molecular. O conhecimento das propriedades dos estados eletrônicos excitados tem permitido desenvolver áreas de vital importância como das energias renováveis, da fotomedicina, dos sensores fluorescentes, entre outras. O objetivo desta tese está orientado a estudar teoricamente a influência do meio (ou efeito de solvente) na fotofísica e nas propriedades dos estados eletrônicos excitados de sistemas moleculares. Nesta tese, primeiramente foi feito um estudo em fase gasosa da superfície de energia potencial do sistema molecular HSO2 e do efeito da energia rotacional na reação OH+SO. Na superfície de energia potencial foram caracterizadas um grande número de estruturas estacionárias e foi encontrado um estado de transição que liga a região mais energética da superfície com a menos energética. Em relação ao papel da energia rotacional na reação mencionada, foi realizado um estudo de trajetórias quase-clássicas, onde foi observado um decréscimo da reatividade com o aumento da energia rotacional total depositada nos reagentes. Posteriormente, foi estudado o efeito do solvente nas propriedades dos estados eletrônicos excitados e nos mecanismos de decaimento de três sistemas moleculares, acetona, 1-nitronaftaleno e daidzein. Na acetona, foi estudada a influência da polarização eletrônica do estado excitado n* provocada pelo solvente no deslocamento espectral da banda de fluorescência. A banda de emissão obtida em água mostra um deslocamento espectral muito pequeno em relação à fase gasosa, em concordância com as evidencias experimentais. Também foi observada pouca dependência do deslocamento espectral com o grau de polarização eletrônica desse estado excitado. O sistema molecular 1-nitronaftaleno foi estudado a fim de esclarecer a ultrarápida desativação eletrônica não fluorescente observada experimentalmente após a transição de absorção, assim como, caracterizar os espectros de absorção transitória também observados nos experimentos. Foi encontrado um intersystem crossing muito eficiente entre o primeiro estado excitado singleto e o segundo estado tripleto, que explica o decaimento não fluorescente deste sistema molecular. O modelo de decaimento proposto permite descrever corretamente os espectros de absorção transitória nos solventes metanol e etanol, através de transições de absorção dos estados eletrônicos tripletos. Finalmente, o sistema molecular daidzein foi estudado a fim de entender porque em solvente polar prótico, como a água, o sistema é fluorescente, mostrando um valor de Stokes shift consideravelmente grande e na presença de solvente polar aprótico, como a acetonitrila, não é observada fluorescência. Nesse sentido, foi estudada a evolução dos estados eletrônicos excitados, na presença dos solventes água e acetonitrila, após as transição de absorção. A topologia dos estados eletrônicos excitados é diferente para cada um dos solventes, em acetonitrila o sistema tem acesso a um intersystem crossing muito eficiente que permite o decaimento não fluorescente. Em água o panorama é diferente, neste caso, não é possível a ocorrência do intersystem crossing e o sistema decai por fluorescência para o estado fundamental. No estado eletrônico fluorescente é observada uma polarização eletrônica significativa que provoca o grande valor de Stokes shift observado experimentalmente. The photodynamics of molecular systems represents one of the most important topics of the molecular physical chemistry today. The knowledge of the excited electronic states properties has allowed the development of several important areas, such as the renewable energies, the photomedicine, fluorescent sensors, etc. The aim of this thesis is oriented to the theoretical study of the solvent effect on the photophysics and on the excited electronic states properties of molecular systems. In this thesis, it was initially studied the potential energy surface of the HSO2 molecular system in gas phase and the rotational energy effect on the reactivity of the OH+SO reaction. In the potential energy surface a large number of stationary structures were characterized and it was found a transition state which connects the highest energetic region to the lowest one. Regarding the role of rotational energy on the mentioned reaction, a quasi-classical trajectories study was performed, indicating a decrease in the reactivity when the total rotational energy deposited in the reactants is increased. Subsequently, it was studied the solvent effect on the excited electronic states and on the deactivation mechanisms of three molecular systems, acetone, 1-nitronaphthalene and daidzein. In the acetone molecular system, it was studied the influence of the electronic polarization, caused by the solvent, in the fluorescence spectral shift of the n* excited state. The emission band obtained in water shows a small spectral shift compared to the gas phase, in agreement with the experimental evidences. It was also observed a little dependence of the spectral shift with the degree of the excited state polarization. The 1-nitronaphthalene molecular system was studied to clarify the ultrafast non-fluorescent deactivation mechanism experimentally observed after the absorption transitions, as well as to characterize the transient absorption spectra also observed in the experiments. A very efficient intersystem crossing was found between the first singlet excited state and the second triplet state, which explains the nonfluorescent decay of this molecular system. The proposed deactivation model allows properly describing the transient absorption spectra in methanol and ethanol solvents by absorption transitions from the triplet electronic states. Finally, the daidzein molecular system was studied to understand why in polar protic solvent, such as water, the system is fluorescent, showing a very large Stokes shift value and in polar aprotic solvent, such as acetonitrila, the fluorescence is not observed. In that sense, it was studied the evolution of the excited electronic states in water and in acetonitrile after the absorption transition. The topology of the excited electronic states is different for each solvent, in acetonitrile the system is accessible to a very efficient intersystem crossing that enables the non-fluorescent decay. In water the picture is different, the intersystem crossing is not possible to occur and the system decays by fluorescence to the ground electronic state. In the fluorescent state is observed a considerable electronic polarization that causes the so large Stokes shift value experimentally observed.

Neste trabalho, uma combinação de cálculos de mecânica quântica, simualções computacionais e teoria de perturbação termodinâmica, foi usada para estudar a solvatação do carbono de etileno (EC) e do carbonato de propileno (PC) em água. As estruturas do líquido foram geradas usando simulações com o método Monte Carlo e amostragem de Metropólis. A função de autocorrelação em energia foi usada para analisar a correlação estatística entre estas configurações. Após uma analise detalhada das ligações de hidrogênio, configurações supermoleculares descorrelacionadas ( carbonato + ligações de hidrogênio cercadas por 350 moléculas de água tratadas como cargas pontuais) foram amostradas das simulações e cálculos do momento de dipolo, no nível de cálculo MP2/ aug-cc-pvDZ, foram realizados. Em média foram formadas 1,4 ligações de hidrogênio entre a água e os solutos (EC ou PC). Foi obtido um momento de dipolo médio 9,9 ± 0,2 D para o EC-água e de 10,6 ± 0,2 D para o PC-água. Finalmente, simulações com o método de Monte Carlo no ensemble NPT e a técnica de perturbação de energia livre foram usados para determinar as energias livres de solvação, e os resultados foram Gsolv = -15,1 ± 0,8 Kcal/ mol para o EC em água e Gsolv = -15,3 ± 1,2 Kcal/mol para o PC em água. A análise destes resultados leva a conclusão de que o EC e o PC são igualmente estáveis em solução aquosa, ou seja, a metilação não tem efeito significativo na solvatação do PC e nem influência a formação das ligações de hidrogênio. In this work, a combination of quantum mechanics, Monte Carlo simulations and thermodynamic perturbation theory was used to study the solvation of ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC) in water. The liquid structures was generated by NVT Monte Carlo simulation using standard procedures for the Metropolis sampling technique. The auto-correlation function of the energy was used to analyse the statistical correlation between the configurations (carbonates + hydrogen bonds sorrounded by 350 water molcules treated as point charges) were smpled from the simulations and dipole moment calculations, at the MP2/ aug-cc-pvDZ, were performed. On average, 1,4 hydrogen bonds were formed between water and the solutes (EC or PC). An average dipole momento of 9,9 ± 0,2 D was obtained for EC-water and 10,6 ± 0,2 D for PC-water. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations in the NPT ensemble combined with free energy pertubation technique were used to determine solvation free energies, and the results were Gsolv = -15,1 ± 0,8 kcal/mol for EC in water and Gsolv = -15,3 ± 1,2 kcal/mol for PC in water. The analysis of these results leads to the conclusion that EC and PC are equally stable in aqueous solution, i.e, the methylation hás no effect on the solvation of PC and no influence on the hydrogen bond formation.

Simulações computacionais são ferramentas essenciais para a compreensão num nível microscópico de diversos fenômenos que ocorrem na natureza. Em particular, simulações ab initio, isto é, de primeiros princípios, podem predizer novas propriedades e auxiliar na interpretação de resultados experimentais, sem a necessidade de potenciais empíricos os quais são ajustados para uma específica configuração do sistema. No entanto, mesmo para simulações ab initio são necessárias aproximações tanto para o cálculo de estrutura eletrônica quanto para a descrição dos movimentos nucleares. Nesta tese, novas aproximações para o funcional de energia de troca e correlação da Teoria do Funcional da Densidade (DFT) são propostas e testadas no cálculo de estrutura eletrônica de átomos, moléculas e sólidos. Para a descrição dos movimentos nucleares a técnica de Monte Carlo é utilizada, porém as energias totais são obtidas com a DFT. Propomos também uma nova metodologia que permite descrever movimentos intramoleculares de sistemas cujas frequências de vibração não podem ser tratadas classicamente. Como aplicações estudamos aglomerados de água e água líquida, mostrando a relevância dessa nova metodologia na descrição de propriedades estruturais, vibracionais e de momento de dipolo desses sistemas. Computer simulations are essential tools for a microscopic understanding of many processes that occur in nature. In particular, ab initio simulations, i.e., first principles simulations, can predict new properties and support experimental results, without the need to use empirical potentials which are fitted for a specific configuration of the system. However, even in ab initio simulations it is necessary to do approximations for the electronic structure calculations and for the description of the nuclear movements. In this thesis, new approximations for the exchange-correlation energy functional of Density Functional Theory (DFT) are proposed and tested for atoms, molecules and solids. The description of the nuclear movements was done using the Monte Carlo technique, however the total energy calculations were obtained by DFT. We also propose a new methodology which allows the description of intramolecular movements whose vibrational frequencies can not be treated classically. As an illustration, we have studied water clusters and liquid water, showing the relevance of this new methodology on the description of structural, vibrational and of the dipole moment of these systems.

O entendimento e o controle das propriedades de materiais nanoestruturados em função do seu tamanho, forma e composição, por exemplo, é fundamental para o avanço da chamada nanotecnologia. Nanofios metálicos, em particular, são interessantes pois possibilitam a investigação de propriedades de sistemas com baixa dimensionalidade, além de serem considerados candidatos a elemento de interligação de unidades fundamentais de uma eletrônica no nível molecular. Efeitos de temperatura sobre o rompimento de nanofios monoatômicos de ouro puros e com impurezas de hidrogênio ou carbono foram investigados de modo sistemático, através da utilização do método de Dinâmica Molecular ab initio, na temperatura de 300 K. De acordo com a metodologia utilizada e as impurezas estudadas, os resultados mostraram que os sistemas são estáveis para longo tempo de simulação (20 ps) e que o hidrogênio é o candidato mais apropriado para explicar as distâncias Au-Au da ordem de 3.6 ºA que são observadas experimentalmente. Questões associadas à ruptura, tais como o entendimento do mecanismo físico envolvido no processo, o papel das flutuações térmicas e o efeito da presença de impureza, são discutidas com base em um modelo de triplas de átomos e de dados estatísticos obtidos de simulações de dinâmica molecular. A partir do modelo, a ruptura pôde ser entendida através de instabilidades observadas no perfil da superfície de energia potencial para ligações suficientemente estressadas. As flutuações térmicas seriam então as res- ponsáveis por levar o tamanho das triplas para os valores instáveis. Este modelo foi capaz ainda de explicar fatos como a não observação de eventos de ruptura em ligações do tipo Au-X (X=H,C), e a probabilidade maior de um fio com impureza de H ou C romper na ligação Au-Au mais afastada da impureza. O estudo de efeitos de tempe- ratura foi estendido para 106T6500 K. Nanofios com outros tamanhos de cadeia (3, 4 ou 6 átomos), na temperatura de 300 K, também foram estudados. De forma geral, os resultados mostraram que a temperatura possui essencialmente o efeito de aumentar a amplitude das flutuações, não modificando os valores médios das distâncias interatômicas da cadeia. Um estudo estatístico das simulações permitiu ainda entender o comportamento destas flutuações, que escala com a raiz quadrada da temperatura do sistema. Um aspecto importante das simulações envolvendo átomos de hidrogênio refere-se a efeitos quânticos que estariam sendo negligenciados. De acordo com os resultados obtidos da dinâmica, o movimento vibracional transversal do H conferia ao sistema uma instabilidade que supostamente seria fruto de uma abordagem inapropriada, já que graus de liberdade clássicos estariam sendo excitados indevidamente. Foi proposto então uma metodologia onde o movimento vibracional do H é substituído por um movimento \"adiabático\", de modo que ele se acomoda (quase) instantaneamente ao movimento mais lento do resto do sistema, através de seu posicionamento no mínimo do potencial local. Dentro desta perspectiva, esta metodologia seria mais realista que a dinâmica realizada de forma convencional, fornecendo, portanto, valores com maior nível de confiança. A distância Au-H-Au aumentou com a utilização desta aproximação, concordando com medidas experimentais de distâncias Au-Au em cadeias monoatômicas da ordem de 3.6 ºA. The understanding and control of the properties of nanostructured materials as a function of their length, shape and composition, for example, is fundamental to improve the so called nanotechnology. Gold nanowires, in particular, are interesting since they not only allow the investigation of the properties of low-dimensional systems, but have also been thought of as candidates for nanometric interconnection elements. Temperature effects in the stability of pure, H or C doped atomically thin gold nanowires were systematically investigated with ab initio Molecular Dynamics simulations at temperature of 300 K. The results showed that the systems are stable for long time simulations (20 ps), and within the present hypothesis, the hydrogen is the best candidate to explain the large Au-Au distances of order of 3.6 ºA that are experimentally observed. Questions about the nanowires rupture, such as the understanding of the physical mechanism involved, the role of the thermal fluctuations and the effect of impurities, are discussed in accordance with a model of triplet of atoms and the statistical results obtained from the molecular dynamics simulations. The triplets model allowed the understanding of the rupture through instabilities observed in the potential energy surface profile when the bonds are su±ciently stressed. Thermal fluctuations would be responsible to lead to these unstable distances. Additionally, this model was able to explain facts such as why the rupture never occurred at Au-X bonds (X=H,C), and the higher probability that a nanowire with H or C impurity has to break on the Au-Au bond more distant from impurity. The study of temperature effects was extended to 106T6500 K. Nanowires with other length chains (3, 4 or 6 atoms) at temperature of 300 K were also studied. In general, the results showed that the effect of temperature is basically to increase the amplitude of the fluctuations, however, it does not modify the average interatomic distances of the chain. A statistical study also allowed to understand the behavior of these fluctuations, which scale with the square root of the temperature. An important aspect of the simulations involving hydrogen atoms is associated with quantum effects that are not taken into account. According to the molecular dynamics results, the transversal vibration of the H atom provided an instability to the system, that supposedly would be produced by an inappropriate treatment, since these degrees of freedom would be inappropriately excited. So, a methodology was proposed where the vibrational motion of the H is replaced by an \\adiabatic\" motion, with the hydrogen following (quasi) instantaneously the slower motion of the remainder system, being positioned at the local minimum of the potential. In this picture, this methodology would be more realistic than the conventional dynamics, allowing to obtain more reliable results. The Au-H-Au distance increased in this approximation, being in good agreement with the Au-Au distances measured experimentally in monoatomic chains, of the order of 3.6 ºA.
