Introduction: An outbreak of the COVID-19 was appended in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019. Lots of related papers were published in the world since then. Objective: This study aimed to identify and analyze the characteristics of COVID-19 publications in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED) published by Latin Americans in 2020. Methods: Documents including searching keywords in their title, abstract, or author keywords from SCI-EXPANDED were assessed. The analyzed aspects covered characteristics of document types, languages, Web of Science categories, and journals. Publication performances of countries and institutions were evaluated by six publication indicators and two citation indicators. Results: A lower percentage of articles and a higher percentage of Spanish language were found. Web of Science category of general and internal medicine published the most articles. The Clinics was the most popular journal. The Cadernos de Saude Publica and Revista da Associacao Medica Brasileira published the most publications and reviews, respectively. Brazil took a leading position in the six publication indicators. The University of São Paulo in Brazil was the most productive institution. Based on the number of citations from the Web of Science Core Collection since publication to the end of 2020, 10 most frequently cited publications were presented. In addition, the analysis of words in publication titles, author keywords, and KeyWords Plus was performed to find the main research focuses. Conclusions: In 2020, a total of 3 056 COVID-19 documents in SCI-EXPANDED were published by Latin Americans mainly in the Web of Science categories of ‘general and internal medicine’ and ‘public, environmental and occupational health’. More letters and editorial materials and fewer articles were published in the first year of its outbreak. A higher percentage of Spanish and Portuguese publications was found. Brazil dominated the six publication indicators. The University of São Paulo in Brazil ranked top in all the six publication indicators while the Technological University of Pereira in Colombia had a higher impact for their first- and corresponding-author publications. Health and infection were the main research focuses. Introducción: En diciembre de 2019 se produjo un brote de COVID-19 en la ciudad china de Wuhan. Desde entonces se publicaron muchos artículos relacionados en el mundo. Objetivo: Este estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar y analizar las características de las publicaciones de COVID-19 en el Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED) realizadas por latinoamericanos en 2020. Métodos: Se evaluaron los documentos que incluían palabras clave de búsqueda en su título, resumen o palabras clave de autor del SCI-EXPANDED. Los aspectos analizados cubrieron las características de los tipos de documentos, los idiomas, las categorías de la Web of Science y las revistas. El rendimiento de las publicaciones de los países e instituciones se evaluó mediante seis indicadores de publicación y dos indicadores de citación. Resultados: Se encontró un bajo porcentaje de artículos y un mayor porcentaje en la lengua española. La categoría Web of Science de medicina general e interna fue la que más artículos publicó. The Clinics fue la revista más popular. Los Cadernos de Saude Publica y la Revista da Associacao Medica Brasileira fueron las que más publicaciones y revisiones publicaron, respectivamente. Brasil ocupó una posición destacada en los seis indicadores de publicación. La Universidad de São Paulo en Brasil fue la institución más productiva. Basándose en el número de citas de la Web of Science Core Collection desde la publicación hasta el final de 2020, se presentaron las 10 publicaciones más citadas. Además, se realizó el análisis de las palabras en los títulos de las publicaciones, las palabras clave del autor y KeyWords Plus para encontrar los principales focos de investigación. Conclusiones: En 2020, un total de 3 056 documentos COVID-19 en SCI-EXPANDED fueron publicados por latinoamericanos, principalmente en las categorías de la Web of Science de 'medicina general e interna' y 'salud pública, ambiental y ocupacional'. Se publicaron más cartas y materiales editoriales y menos artículos en el primer año de su aparición. Se encontró un mayor porcentaje de publicaciones en español y portugués. Brasil dominó los seis indicadores de publicación. La Universidad de São Paulo, en Brasil, ocupó el primer puesto en los seis indicadores de publicación, mientras que la Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira, en Colombia, tuvo un mayor impacto en sus publicaciones de primer y segundo autor. La salud y la infección fueron los principales focos de investigación.

Introduction: In contrast with other tropical countries, Cuba has been frequently studied from the point of view of scientometrics. It has been reported that Cuban researchers often failed to cite other Cuban researchers or to collaborate with them and that 78 % of the Cuban scientific output is published in Cuban journals and mostly missed by Scopus and the Web of Science. However, there are no recent comprehensive studies of science in Cuba. Objective: To quantify the Cuban scientific output, in all disciplines, until the beginning of 2021. Methods: We analyzed publications from Cuba, dated 1900 to 2021, that reached the index Science Citation Index Expanded. Results: We retrieved a total of 23 576 publications, mostly articles. In this particular database, English is the dominant language, and, over time, articles have become longer and increased the number of authors and references. Numerically, the leading institution is Universidad de La Habana. Research is strongly concentrated around medical subjects. Collaboration teams led by foreign authors have more citations recorded by the database, where the number of Cuban articles has decreased strongly since 2008. Conclusion: Our conclussions only apply to the fraction of Cuban science covered by the Science Citation Index Expanded (under 22 %). We recommend three main improvements: to increase collaboration among Cuban scientists; to expand research areas beyond medical subjects; and to improve the quality of Cuban journals. Resumen Introducción: A diferencia de otros países tropicales, Cuba ha sido frecuentemente estudiada desde el punto de vista de la cienciometría. Se ha informado que los investigadores cubanos citan poco a otros investigadores cubanos, no colaboraron entre sí, y que el 78 % de la producción científica cubana se publica en revistas cubanas sin llegar a Scopus y la Web of Science. Sin embargo, no existen estudios recientes y generales de la ciencia en Cuba. Objetivo: Cuantificar la producción científica cubana, en todas las disciplinas, hasta inicios de 2021. Métodos: Analizamos publicaciones con dirección autoral de Cuba, fechadas de 1900 a 2021, únicamente en el Science Citation Index Expanded. Resultados: Hallamos 23 576 publicaciones, en su mayoría artículos. En esta base de datos en particular, el inglés es el idioma dominante y, con el tiempo, los artículos se han vuelto más largos y han aumentado el número de autores y referencias. Numéricamente, la institución líder es la Universidad de La Habana. La investigación se concentra fuertemente en temas médicos. Los equipos de colaboración dirigidos por autores extranjeros tienen más citas registradas en esta base de datos estadounidense, donde el número de artículos cubanos ha disminuido fuertemente desde 2008. Conclusión: Nuestras conclusiones solo se aplican a la fracción de la ciencia cubana cubierta por el Science Citation Index Expanded (menos del 22 %) . Recomendamos tres mejoras principales: incrementar la colaboración entre los científicos cubanos; ampliar las áreas de investigación más allá de los temas médicos; y mejorar la calidad de las revistas cubanas.

Panama is a small Central American country for which apparently there are no specific scientometric studies. We analyzed 4 854 research documents originating in Panama in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED). Most are formal articles and nearly all are in English. The main fields are ecology, botany, zoology, evolution and aquatic biology. Most collaboration is done with USA, Germany, United Kingdom, Canada, and Brazil and the largest numbers of articles are published by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, the University of Panama, the Gorgas Institute, the Children’s Hospital, the Institute of Scientific Research and Advanced Technology Services, the Technological University of Panama, the Ministry of Health, and the University of Chiriquí. Keyword terms show a concentration on tropical forest trees, diversity and variation, considering mostly the effects of particular physical and biological causes. Output has grown steadily for several decades and continues to grow. The SCI-EXPANDED citations remain relatively stable and the lifespan of articles exceeds 20 years, with top citation four years after publication. The Impact Factor as currently measured is not appropriate to know the impact of Panamanian research. Our results only apply to the literature in the SCI-EXPANDED. Panama has nearly 100 scientific journals that are not taken into account by the SCI-EXPANDED. Thus the full productivity of authors and institutions, and their impact, remain to be studied, but our data represent a valid baseline for future research. Rev. Biol. Trop. 63 (4): 000-000.
