Aim: to carry out a reflection on how the vision of finitude/death in Western society influences the performance of health professionals. Method: A reflection on death and dying is performed using the main classical authors working this issue. Results: Death and dying are events not only biological but also of religious, social, philosophical and anthropological dimension. In Western society, there is a trend away from the idea of death, with a false belief of immortality. It is difficult to think about the issue of death and dying in their process aspects and its multiple meanings. This view implies that death is unwarranted or unexpected. Conclusions: When we reflect directly on the practices of health professionals towards death, we understand that an opening for discussion of the topic among their peers and also is necessary to society in general. That’s because these workers have turned academic training to rehabilitate and restore health with a view to prolonging life, thus envisage death as a failure, professional failure, which leads to feelings of guilt and sadness. It is important, therefore, that these professionals are trained scientifically and psychologically to deal with the issue.

This study aimed to raise the scientific literature on the constructs of craving relating it to situations that stimulate the usage pattern of the crack, the repercussions on the lives of users and control strategies. We conducted a review of the literature through databases SciELO, LILACS and MEDLINE, using the keywords: craving, crack cocaine, and drug dependence. The survey period was from 1996 to 2012, totaling 39 studies. The results demonstrated that the concept of craving (or tear) most used is understood as a strong desire to use a substance, which may influence the user’s life in a negative way through relational ruptures and illicit activities. The craving management is through various strategies and techniques ranging from the use of other drugs to drug therapy. It is concluded that the craving because of its multifactorial etiology and on the way management becomes his peculiar understanding to help crack users in a unique way, involving social and psychological peculiarities of each.

The consumption of crack incites a default intense, continuous and repetitive, causes and consequences violate the user extends to all his family and social environment. Given this reality aimed to reflect on the nursing care of crack users and their interface with the Holistic Theory proposed by Myra Levine. The Holistic Theory is emphasized as connection and link between the fragment and the whole, through the knowledge of human parts: body-mind-spirit-nursing-client-family. This conceptual framework has logical nature, is simple, generalizable and can be tested based on assumptions. Thus, nurses must understand the crack user as a bio-psychosocial being the repercussions of the use of this substance transgress the physical dimension, greatly complicating the traditional nursing care. In this context, it is imperative to support holistic and humane able to foster face this serious problem.

This is a literature review that investigated scientific production on quality of life of seniors. The articles were collected in SciELO database and identified the following variables: most studied topics, year and methodological approach of the publications. We identified 56 articles, of which 23 related quality of life to other health indicators, the greatest year of publication was 2011 and the quantitative approach was prevalent in the sample. The studies led to apprehend that the assessment of quality of life should be merged into nursing glimpsing the optimization of physical and mental health in the elderly.

This article aims to describe my experience in applying the method of Heideggerian research, in particular the phenomenological interviews with people with mental illness discharged from psychiatric institutions that are currently residents of Therapeutic Residential Services (SRTS). We interviewed nine residents of SRTs in Piauí. In this step several times to walk were striking as the strategy of rapprochement with the interviewees, the location of interviews and even stirring account of the subjects. This experience enabled me to identify what is necessary and important to establish empathy with the subjects, there is no formula for conducting the interview, but it is the researcher to identify the best strategy for obtaining the reports. So is that the empathetic experienced by me in getting the reports of respondents in essence residents through phenomenological interview was crucial to uncovering the meaning of the subjects lived in the daily life of these devices.

The aidms of this paper is to describe the experience of one of the authors in obtaining reports of crack users using the phenomenological interview. Walk in this process were considered key strategies for approaching the subject of this study, since they supported the familiarity and empathy researcher-subject to this overriding methodological strategy. This manifested itself as a strategy for the seizure of intrinsic meanings about death and dying for user-to-be-crack. Obtaining reports reflect the experience of them in the consumption of crack cocaine led to the fact that the absence of an existential sense, one can be and being in the world.
