Australian container lines Australia-New Zealand Direct Line, Columbus Line and Blue Star Line are asking the Maritime Administration for approval of its vessel- and terminal-sharing agreement. The cooperative venture between the three Australian container carriers has far reaching competitive implications since the three carriers accounted for 78% of the import shipments and 63% of the export shipments in the West Coast-Australia/New Zealand container shipping route. The cooperation between the three carriers would increase sailing to twice weekly frequencies.

CP Ships, the container shipping division of Canadian Pacific Ltd., is planning to expand its operations to go beyond its Atlantic operation by offering to buy Lykes Bros. Steamship Co. The company has offered $30 million for Lykes' trade lanes, office staff and control of 11 ships. Raymond Miles of CP Ships says that the company does not plan to move into the routes of global carriers but CP Ships intends to concentrate its expansion in 'non-arterial trades' even if the proposed takeover fails.
