The Stock Exchanges responded to criticism that young companies were effectively excluded from raising equity capital on the stock market by overhauling its listing rules. It also introduced the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) for smaller, young companies. The AIM is proving successful although it is not yet known whether it will suffer from the liquidity problems experienced by the Unlisted Securities Market (USM).
