Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a promising coating process to produce ceramic oxide on valve metals such as Al, Mg and Ti. The PEO coating is carried out with a dilute alkaline electrolyte solution using a similar technique to conventional anodizing. The coating process involves multiple process parameters which can influence the surface properties of the resultant coating, including power mode, electrolyte solution, substrate, and process time. In this study, ceramic oxide coatings were prepared on commercial Al alloy in electrolytes with different KOH concentrations (0.5 ~ 4 g/L) by plasma electrolytic oxidation. Microstructural and electrochemical characterization were conducted to investigate the effects of electrolyte concentration on the microstructure and electrochemical characteristics of PEO coating. It was revealed that KOH concentration exert a great influence not only on voltage-time responses during PEO process but also on surface morphology of the coating. In the voltage-time response, the dielectric breakdown voltage tended to decrease with increasing KOH concentration, possibly due to difference in solution conductivity. The surface morphology was pancake-like with lower KOH concentration, while a mixed form of reticulate and pancake structures was observed for higher KOH concentration. The KOH concentration was found to have little effect on the electrochemical characteristics of coating, although PEO treatment improved the corrosion resistance of the substrate material significantly.

Anodizing is a technology to generate thicker and high-quality films than natural oxide films by treating metals via electrochemical methods. Electrochemical manufacturing method of nano structure is an efficient technology in terms of cost reduction, high productivity and complicated shapes, which receives the spotlight in diverse areas. Especially, artificial films generated by anodizing technology possess excellent mechanical characteristics including hardness and wear resistance. It is also easy to modify thickness and adjust shape of those artificial films so that they are mainly used in sensors, filters, optical films and electrolytic condensers. In this study, experiment was performed to observe the effect of current density on porous film formation in two-step anodizing for Al alloy. Anodizing process was performed with 10 vol.% sulfuric acid electrolyte while the temperature was maintained at 10℃ using a double beaker. and 10 ~ 30 mA/㎠ was applied for 40 minutes using a galvanostatic method. As a result, both pore diameters and distances between pores tended to increase as the local temperature and electrolysis activity increased due to the increase in applied current density.

In this paper, the characteristics of a cavitation-erosion damage behavior on the STS 304 and hot-dip aluminized STS 304 under cavitation environment in sea water solution was investigated. The electrochemical experiments were carried out by potential measurement, anodic/cathodic polarization test, Tafel analysis, and also galvanostatic experiment in current density variables for the samples. The apparatus of cavitation-electrochemical experiment was manufactured in compliance with modified ASTM G-32 standard, with the conditions of sea water temperature of and the measurement, amplitude of . The damage behavior was analyzed by an observation of surface mophologies and a measurement of damage depth by a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and a 3D microscope, respectively, after electrochemical test. After polarization experiment under cavitation environment, much higher damage depths for the hot-dip aluminized STS 304 were observed comparing to the untreated STS 304. In addition, higher corrosion current density in hot-dip aluminized STS 304 presented than that of untreated STS 304 as a result of Tafel analysis.

In this study, Al and Zn arc thermal spray coatings were carried out onto the substrate of SS400 steel to improve corrosion resistance and durability of hull structural steel for ship in marine environment. Therefore cavitation-erosion test was conducted to evaluate the durability of painted and thermal spray coated specimens. And then the damaged surface morphology and weight loss were obtained to compare with each other, respectively. As a result, the painted specimen was the poorest cavitation resistance characteristics because surface damage behavior appeared to be exfoliated in bulk shape during the cavitation experiment. And Zn thermal spray coating layer presented the significant surface damage depth due to relatively low surface hardness and local cavitation damage tendency. On the other hand, as a result of the weight loss analysis, the painting layer presented the poorest cavitation resistance and the Al thermal spray coating layer relatively showed the best results after cavitation experiment.

This investigation was to identify the electrochemical corrosion protection conditions to minimize the cavitation damage by generating hydrogen gas with the means of hydrogen overvoltage before the impact pressure of the cavity is transferred to the surface. The hybrid potentiostatic test method is designed to evaluate a complexed cavitation and electrochemical characteristic for ALBC3 alloy that is diverse and its broad applications fields in marine industry. The surface observation showed that neither the cavitation damage nor the electrochemical damage by the hydrogen gas generation occurred in the potential of -2.6 V under the cavitation environment. In the potentiostatic experiments under the cavitation environment, the cavities were reflected or cancelled out by the collision of the cavities with the hydrogen gas generated by the hydrogen overvoltage.

Due to the good corrosion resistance and machinability, copper alloy is commonly employed for shipbuilding, hydroelectric power and tidal power industries. The Cu alloy, however, has poor durability, and the seawater application at fast flow condition becomes vulnerable to cavitation damage leading to economic loss and risking safety. The HVOF(High Velocity Oxygen Fuel) thermal spray coating with WC-10Co4Cr were therefore introduced as a replacement for chromium or ceramic to minimize the cavitation damage and secure durablility under high-velocity and high-pressure fluid flow. Cavitation test was conducted in seawater at and with an amplitude of on HVOF WC-10Co4Cr coatings produced by thermal spray. The cavitation at and exposed the substrate in 12.5 hours and in 10 hours, respectively. Starting from 5 hours of cavitation, the coating layer continued to show damage by higher than 160% over time when the temperature of seawater was elevated from to . Under cavitation environment, although WC-10Co4Cr has good wear resistance and durability, increase in temperature may accelerate the damage rate of the coating layer mainly due to cavitation damage.

This investigation evaluated the effect of cavitation condition on electrochemical characteristics of 304 stainless steel, which is widely used for marine environment. The cavitation test with time were conducted on 304 stainless steel in seawater solution. Surface morphologies of specimen were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and 3D microscope. Pitting depth, weight loss and damage rate were analyzed after each cavitation experiment. The surface damage was more severe as the current density increased. A dramatical increase in the damage depth and weight loss was observed after 7 hours of cavitation experiment.

The hull of a fast sailing aluminium ship are generally prone to erosion owing to the impact of seawater. At this time, synergistic effects of the erosion and the corrosion by aggressive ions such as chlorides tend to aggravate the damage. There have been various attempts, including selection of erosion-resistant materials, cathodic protection and addition of corrosion inhibitors, to overcome damage by erosion or corrosion under marine environments. These approaches, however, have limits on identifying the damage mechanism clearly, because they depend on analogical interpretation by correlating two damage behaviors after the individual studies are assessed. In this research, it was devised a hybrid testing apparatus that integrates electrochemical corrosion test and cavitation test, and thus the erosion-corrosion behavior by cavitation was investigated more reliably. As a result, the slightest damage was observed at the potentials between -1.6 V and -1.5 V. This is considered to be due to a reflection or counterbalancing effect caused by collision of the cavitation cavities and the hydrogen gas formed by activation polarization.

The galvanostatic tests for corrosion protection are conducted at various applied current densities during 93,600 sec, and evaluated in terms of the variations in current density with time and in the potential at the applied current density. In addition, the corrosion damage depth is analyzed with 3D analysis optical microscope after galvanostatic tests. In this study, it was investigated to decide condition of the corrosion protection gavalnostatic method for Cu-Al alloy that has an excellent corrosion resistance. In the galvanostatic test under the cavitation environment, the energy was reflected or cancelled out by the collision with the oxygen gas generated by the oxygen reduction action. The surface observation showed neither the cavitation damage nor the electrochemical damage in the current density over 0.01 in the dynamic state under the cavitation environment.

In this study, the cavitation test and electrochemical experiments were conducted for ALBC3(Cu-Al) alloy that has an excellent corrosion resistance and cavitation characteristic in sea water. Based on the ASTMG32 regulation, the cavitation test was performed with the cavitation and cavitation erosion tester using piezoelectric effect. The electrochemical characteristics are evaluated with potentiostatic experiments in activation polarization potential range. As a result, cavitation damage is increased proportionally to temperature and time at amplitude. It is appeared that acceleration period in weight loss presented over 6 hours under the cavitation environment in sea water. In addition, corrosion damages were observed at the potential range of -3.2~-1.4 V as the result of potensiostatic experiments during 12 hours in activation polarization potential range.

Ships and offshore structures are exposed to harsh marine environments, and maintenance and repair are becoming increasingly important to the industry and the economy. The major corrosion phenomenons of metals and alloys in marine environment are pitting corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, fatigue corrosion, cavitation-erosion and etc. due to the effect of chloride ions and is quite serious. Methods of protection against corrosion can generally be divided into two groups: anodic protection and cathodic protection. Anodic protection is limited to the passivity characteristics of a material in its environment, while cathodic protection can apply methods such as sacrificial anode cathodic protection and impressed current cathodic protection. Sacrificial anode methods using Al and Zn alloys are widely used for marine structures and vessels intended for use in seawater. Impressed current cathodic protection methods are also widely used in marine environments, but tend to generate problems related to hydrogen embrittlement caused by hydrogen gas generation. Therefore, it is important to the proper maintenance and operation of the various corrosion protection systems for ship in the harsh marine environment.

In the study, it was carried out dissimilar metal welding on materials for Al ship. The electrochemical and mechanical characteristics evaluated for specimen welded by ROBOT. The hardness of welding zone is lower than those of heat affected zone and base metal. At the result of tensile test, the specimen welded with ER5183 welding material presented excellent property compared with ER5556. The polarization trend for the base metal and welding metal showed the effects of concentration polarization due to oxygen reduction and activation polarization due to hydrogen generation. At the Tafel experiments result, the corrosion density in welded with ER5183 welding material presented the lowest value.

Friction stir welding(FSW) was developed as a new solid state welding technique by The Welding Institute (TWI). On the basis of FSW, a new processing technique, friction stir processing (FSP), has recently been developed. FSP has been applied to cast aluminum alloy to modify the microstructure to enhance mechanical characteristic. FSP is a new solid state processing technique for microstructural modification in metallic materials. FSP has been applied to aluminum alloy to modify the microstructure to enhance mechanical characteristic. In this study, we investigated optimum condition friction stir processing with the evaluation of mechanical characteristic for 5456-H116 Al alloy. The mechanical characteristics of base metal similar with in 15 mm/min, 250 RPM with full screw probe. This condition is concluded that optimum friction stir processing condition. The result of this investigation will be able to application for repair of welding part for aluminum ship.

In friction stir welding for 6061-T6 with various traveling speed and rotation speed conditions, the best mechanical characteristics presented in traveling speed of 507 mm/min and rotation speed of 1100RPM. The maximum tensile strength and yield strength increased with the increasing of traveling speed. The result of the electrochemical characteristic evaluation in friction stir welding at optimum conditions for 6061-T6 Al alloy presented a good characteristics compare to base metal.

Small FRP(fiber-reinforced polymer) fishing ships have numerous problems with the point of the environmental and recycling perspectives. In light of these aspects, aluminum can be used as a material for ship building. It is environmental friendly, easy to recycle, and provides a high added value to fishing boats. In this paper, we report on mechanical and electrochemical characteristics of welding parts for friction stir welded 5456-H116 Al alloy. In friction stir welded at various traveling speeds under the rotation speed of 500 RPM, the best characteristics presented in traveling speed of 15mm/min. The anodic polarizations of base metal and welding metal were observed tendency which current density from the open circuit potential suddenly increase. The cathodic polarization presented concentrated polarization caused by the dissolved oxygen reduction reaction and activation polarization caused by hydrogen generation. From result of Tafel analysis, the corrosion potential of 5456 alloy(Base metal) was lower than that of friction stir welded part, as were its corrosion current densities.

Recently, there has been a new appreciation of aluminum alloys as materials that are capable of reducing the environment load. This is because aluminum alloys are lightweight, easy to recycle, permit miniaturization, and have environmental friendly properties. In this study, we investigated the mechanical and electrochemical properties of 5083F aluminum alloys using slow strain rate test(SSRT) and potentiostatic tests under various potential conditions. In the potentiostatic tests, the current density in the potential range from -0.7 to -1.4V after 1,200 s was low. After considering the results of the potentiostatic tests, maximum tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, time-to-fracture, observation of fractured specimen and fractography analysis, the optimum protection potential range was between -1.3 and -0.7V(Ag/AgCl).

As a reactor coolant pump (RCP) is operated in the nuclear power system for a long time, so its surface is continuously contaminated by radioactive scales. In order to maintain for RCP internals, a special chemical decontamination process should be used to reduce the radiation from the RCP surface. In this study, applicable possibility in chemical decontamination for RCP was investigated for the various stainless steels. The stainless steel (STS) 304 showed the best electrochemical properties for corrosion resistance and the lowest weight loss ratio in chemical decontamination process model 3-1 than other materials. However, the pitting corrosion was generated in both STS 415 and STS 431 with the increasing numbers of cycle. The intergranular corrosion in STS 415 was sporadically observed. The sizes of their pitting corrosion were also increased with increasing cycle numbers.
