(BMP)s could be"nused to control events during periodontal, craniofacial and implant wound healing through favoring bone"nformation"nAccording toLynch, combination of PGDF and IGF1 would be effective in promoting growth of all the"ncomponents of the periodontium."nThe aim of this study was to characterize growth factor and review the literature to determine the"nmechanism of their function, classification and application in implant and periodontal treatment.

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to develop a natural nanoemulsion with antibacterial and anticancer properties., Materials and Methods: The chemical composition of the Origanum majorana essential oil was investigated using GC-MS analysis. Besides, the successful loading of the essential oil in the nanoemulsion was confirmed using ATR-FTIR analysis. Moreover, nanoemulsion's anticancer, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities were investigated., Results: Terpinen-4-o1 (46.90%) was identified as the major compound in the essential oil. The nanoemulsion with a 149 ± 5 nm droplet size and zeta potential of -11 ± 1 mV was prepared. The cytotoxic effect of the nanoemulsion against A-375 human melanoma cells (IC 50 = 139 μg/mL) showed significantly more potency than A-549 human lung cancer cells (IC 50 = 318 μg/mL). Interestingly, growth of Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and E. coli (Gram-negative) bacteria after treatment with 4800 μg/mL of nanoemulsion were obtained at 12 ± 2 and 6 ± 1%, respectively. However, the IC 50 value of nanoemulsion against E. coli (580 μg/mL) was not significantly different (P > 0.05) from S. aureus (611 μg/mL)., Conclusion: A straightforward preparation method, high stability, and multi-biological effects are the main advantages of the prepared nanoemulsion. Background: Due to numerous side effects of common drugs in treatment of leishmaniasis, new therapeutic approaches focus on herbal compounds. Therefore, we aimed to determine the effect of crocin and stigmasterol on in-vitro growth of promastigotes and amastigotes of Leishmania major in the Department of Parasitology, Pasteur Institute, Tehran, Iran in 2018., Methods: The effect of different concentrations of crocin and stigmasterol were evaluated by determining their in-vitro inhibitory effects on promastigotes and amastigotes of the L. major using MTT assay., Results: The fatality rate was 65.27% and 71.96% for crocin and stigmasterol respectively at 24 h post-culture in concentration of 50 μg/mL. The mean inhibitory effect of crocin and stigmasterol on L major amastigotes after 72 h were 52.22% and 38.96%., Conclusion: The crocin and stigmasterol had efficient adverse effects on promastigote and amastigotes of L. major , hence, further studies on the anti-leishmanial effects of these herbal compounds in human and animal models are recommended., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest The authors declare that there is no conflict of interests., (Copyright © 2021 Ranjbar et al. Background and Objectives: Streptococcus pneumoniae causes many lethal infections. Due to its reduced sensitivity to commonly used antibiotics, development of new strategies against pneumococcal infections seems to be necessary. We aimed to investigate immunodominant antigens in S. pneumoniae culture supernatant in order to develop novel targets for pneumococcal vaccines., Materials and Methods: In this study S. pneumoniae ATCC49619 was sub-cultured into BHI broth from overnight culture at 37°C for 4 h. The supernatant proteins were precipitated using acetone precipitation method. A rabbit was intramuscularly immunized with alum adjuvant and 100 μg pneumococcal supernatant proteins, 6 times at 14 days' intervals to produce hyperimmune serum. ELISA assay was performed to determine the antibody level response to pneumococcal secretory proteins. Then dot blot applied for rapid evaluation of hyperimmune serum reactivity to pneumococcus supernatant proteins. The western blot was also used to determine the interaction of supernatant proteins with immunogenic rabbit's hyperimmune-serum., Results: According to the western blot analysis, the immunodominant protein had 140KDa molecular weight and designated as pneumococcal secretory protein140 (Psp140)., Conclusion: The Psp140 protein in the supernatant of S. pneumoniae culture is an immunodominant protein and it is likely related to pneumococcal secretory protein or surface exposed protein which released into culture supernatant during bacterial growth., (Copyright© 2020 Iranian Society of Microbiology & Tehran University of Medical Sciences.)

Background: Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis are the most important tick-borne diseases. This study was conducted in three cities of Kerman Province in Iran to investigate the circulation of the bacteria in ticks collected from sheep., Methods: Ticks were collected from animals using Srkj forceps and transferred to the Entomology lab in cold chain. After specimen's identification, they kept at -70 °C. Tick DNA was extracted using Bioneers DNA extraction kits followed by Nested PCR technique to amplify ribosomal 16S rRNA gene to detect Anaplasma infection in ticks., Results: 472 sheep were examined from which 349 ticks were collected and identified in laboratory using valid keys. Tick specimens belonged to two genera and four species; Hyalomma marginatum (62.47%) was the most frequent and Hylomma asiaticum (5.73%) showed the least abundance. The infestation rate to different tick species was different in three regions of Kerman Province. Observation revealed that 24 specimens (58.3%) were positive for Anaplasma . There is a significant difference between male and female infection rate. However, there is no significant difference between these variables in each of these cities., Conclusion: This study shows high infection rates to Anaplasma in hard ticks. It is essential for health and veterinary authorities and farmers to use appropriate strategies to control ticks to reduce the infestation., (Copyright© Iranian Society of Medical Entomology & Tehran University of Medical Sciences.)

Background and Objectives: Acinetobacter baumannii has been known as a major pathogen causing nosocomial infections. The aim of this study was to develop multiplex PCR for rapid and simultaneous detection of metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) genes in clinical isolates of A. baumannii ., Materials and Methods: In this study, we used three sets of primers to amplify the MBL genes including bla OXA-48 , bla OXA-23 and bla NDM . The multiplex PCR assay was optimized for rapid and simultaneous detection of MBL genes in A. baumannii strains recovered from clinical samples., Results: A. baumannii strains recovered from clinical samples were subjected to the study. The multiplex PCR produced 3 bands of 501 bp for bla OXA-23 , 744 bp for bla OXA-48 and 623 bp for bla NDM genes. In addition to, no any cross-reactivity was observed in multiplex PCR., Conclusion: Based on obtained data, the multiplex PCR had a good specificity without any cross reactivity and it appears that the multiplex PCR is reliable assay for simultaneous detection of MBL genes in A. baumannii strains., (Copyright© 2020 Iranian Neuroscience Society.)

Background and Objectives: Loop-mediated isothermal amplification is a novel nucleic acid amplification assay providing as a simple diagnostic tool for rapid identification of microbial diseases in developing countries. In this study, a LAMP assay was established for Yersinia enterocolitica, a leading cause of acute enterocolitis in young children., Materials and Methods: LAMP assay was established with four primers targeting a specific locus for the detection of Y. enterocolitica. The assay was conducted at 65°C in thermo block for 90min. The sensitivity of LAMP was evaluated in comparison to conventional PCR using pTZ57R containing the target locus. Finally, specificity was assessed using DNA from common enteropathogenic bacteria., Results: Results showed that the sensitivity of LAMP assay was 44-copy number, which was 10-fold higher than that of PCR. No cross-reactivity was observed when testing against other enteropathogenic pathogens., Conclusion: This study showed that LAMP assay is an alternative molecular diagnostic tool for infections with Y. enterocolitica. In addition, this method may be useful in diagnosis at field or in laboratories without PCR machine.

Background and Objective: Nowadays, the presence of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) producing strains in Serratia genus causes the emergence of resistance to many antibiotics. So, the lack of proper diagnosis of ESBLs strains can lead to failure in the treatment. The objective of the present study was to investigate ESBLs production in Serratia strains isolated from the clinical blood samples in Shiraz, Iran., Materials and Methods: In this study, 39 Serratia strains isolated from the patients referred to Namazi Hospital, during a 2 year period were tested. The antimicrobial resistance of the isolates to 21 antibiotics was evaluated using Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. Combination disk method was used to determine the ESBL phenotype among the isolates. PCR was performed to investigate the presence of ESBL genes of SHV, OXA and TEM types., Results: The lowest antibiotic resistance rates belonged to meropenem (7.69%) and imipenem (5.12%). Overall, positive ESBL phenotype was identified in 69% (n = 27) of the isolates, 70.37% (n = 19) for S. marcescens and 29.62% (n = 8) for S. liquefaciens. Results obtained by PCR showed that only 20.51% carried OXA gene and 15.38% carried SHV-1 gene. TEM gene was detected in none of the isolates., Conclusion: This study showed a high prevalence of the emerging ESBL producing strains among clinical isolates of Serratia that could lead to an increase in antibiotic resistance. However, ESBLs genes other than those tested here may be more responsible for the emergence of ESBL phenotype among Serratia clinical isolates in our region.

Background and Objectives: The emergence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Shigella spp. is of increasing clinical concern specially in children worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing Shigella spp. in Tehran, Iran., Materials and Methods: The study included all Shigella isolates recovered from pediatric patients aged less than 12 years admitted to a major pediatric hospital in Tehran, Iran, from 2008 to 2010. Bacterial identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) screening and confirmatory tests were performed according to the standard guidelines. Conjugal transfer experiments and plasmid analysis were also carried out. Polymerase chain reaction and sequencing were used to identify the genetic determinants responsible for ESBL production., Results: Four out of 55 Shigella isolates, including three S. sonnei and one S. flexneri, showed an ESBL-positive phenotype. Plasmid transfer of the ESBL phenotype was successful for the S. flexneri isolate only. By PCR and sequencing, one S. sonnei isolate tested positive for the CMY-59 gene, while the other two S. sonnei and the S. flexneri isolates tested positive for the bla TEM-1 and bla CTX-M-15 genes., Conclusion: We found the prevalence of ESBL producing Shigella isolates was higher than detection rates observed in many other countries. Our finding raise concerns about the dissemination of ESBL among the strains of endemic S. sonnei throughout the country, because this species is now the most frequently isolated Shigella species in Iran and shigellosis by such strains in the community can pose a significant threat to patients and presents a challenge for disease management.
