This small-scale qualitative study focuses on educational psychologists’ (EPs’) views on developing attuned interactions with service users during remote/online consultations. Data from 10 EPs in nine EP services in England were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. The findings suggest that participants viewed it as possible to remain attuned during remote consultation. They also reported that online consultations can help to address the power imbalance between service users and professionals. Prior experience in Video Enhanced Reflective Practice (VERP) and training in Video Interactive Guidance (VIG) were viewed by some participants as supportive. However, some EPs considered skills in being attuned to others as being inherent to the role of psychologists. Further research on EP and service users’ online experiences and tentative implications for practice are suggested, including that EP services continue to include remote consultation within the range of services that they offer. Objective: The current study examined group differences in college students' views on e-cigarettes in terms of safety, popularity, health risks, social acceptability, efficacy as a cessation aid, and promoting combustible cigarette use. Participants: 337 undergraduates (Mage = 20.84, SD = 3.79; 72.1% female; 68.5% White) divided into three groups: Never Users (n = 178), Ever Users (n = 108), and Current Users (n = 51). Methods: Participants completed questionnaires for course credit. Results: Compared to Ever and Never Users, Current Users believed e-cigarettes were safer, healthier, a useful tool to quit smoking, did not lead to combustible cigarette smoking, and that nicotine was less dangerous. Current Users also were less likely to endorse boosting social image as a motive for use. Conclusions: Public health campaigns could benefit from targeting current users' positive beliefs about e-cigarettes to reduce the prevalence of e-cigarette use among college students. Adopting the social constructionist approach, this study reports on Bhutanese teachers' views about the inclusion of students on the autism spectrum in regular schools. Following an exploratory sequential mixed-methods approach, 16 teachers from seven inclusive schools in Bhutan were interviewed and the analysis of their responses guided the development of an online survey instrument completed by 106 Bhutanese educators in 18 schools. Teachers' views about the inclusion of students on the autism spectrum seemed to be influenced by the social, educational, and religious context of Bhutan. Although teachers generally supported inclusion, they also expressed confusion and uncertainty about the best placement in schools for students on the autism spectrum. The implications of findings for the importance of increasing support for teacher training and allocation of adequate resources to schools are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Finland is committed to inclusive education as many other countries too. In this study, we examined Finnish student teachers' attitudes towards inclusion using an electronic questionnaire. In total, 277 students participated. The open responses were studied as various teacher students', class, subject or special education students' narratives of inclusion. The results showed that student teachers' attitudes, except special education student teachers, were quite negative. The most common narratives told about lack of resources, about pupils and/or teachers suffering in inclusive settings, about good parts of segregation and about a positive attitude, followed by a but, like: yes it's good, but. Full inclusion was not supported, but other forms, like partial inclusion, were more seconded. We conclude that future teachers need more knowledge about and a better understanding of inclusion and diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sustainability education is crucial in helping students deal with current health and environmental challenges through dietary choices. This study aims to provide an understanding of how the teachers surveyed (n = 416, 85% women; 58% teaching natural sciences) view the importance of the following interrelated issues for sustainability: (1) the viability of diets for tackling environmental challenges and natural resource management; (2) the health benefits of traditional versus plant-based diets; and (3) the impacts of factory farming on animals and animal sentience. Most participants recognised the importance of a sustainable education model that encourages reducing meat consumption while adopting healthy plant-based diets. Furthermore, the majority recognise animal sentience and agree that schools should address the negative impacts of factory farming on animals and the environment. The results are striking, as they indicate that most teachers' views contrast with the traditionalist and instrumental portrayal of animals in national core curricula. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a total of 676 million cases of infection and 6.9 million deaths. During a pandemic, healthcare workers are exposed to psychological stressors such as high risk of infection, inadequate protection, and isolation, which could have implications for their wellbeing. The purpose of this qualitative literature review carried out systematically was to examine the views of physiotherapists who worked with COVID-19 patients during the COVID-19 pandemic to identify how physiotherapy services might be better prepared for future pandemics. A systematic search was carried out across four databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, SPORTDISCUS) to identify relevant studies. Studies were assessed for quality and data extracted and analysed using thematic synthesis. A total of 631 studies were identified through the search strategy and screened against the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Six papers met the inclusion criteria. Four themes were identified from the perspective of the physiotherapy participants: lack of resources; emotional impact; coping strategies and integration; and value within the multidisciplinary team. Overall qualitative evidence around the views of physiotherapists who worked during the COVID-19 pandemic is limited. An insight into the views of participants may help healthcare organisations support physiotherapy services to be better prepared in the event of a future pandemic, specifically addressing the need to strengthen supply chains, advocating for physiotherapy as a profession in low-income counties and psychological resilience. Parents play a major role as enablers and motivators of their children's sport participation and retention. However, parents are often not considered in the data collection pertaining to youth sport coaching initiatives. We investigated parent perceptions of community youth sport coaching within the context of a Coach Developer Program which was trialled across 6 community sport clubs. 17 parents contributed qualitative data via interview. Reflexive thematic analysis resulted in the themes: expectations of coaching; limitations in coach development; parents' ability to notice change, and sustainability of coach development programs. There was a mismatch between parent expectations of coaches and their recognition that the coaching role is multi-faceted with coach development difficult where coaching is largely undertaken by novice volunteers. Findings from this study add to the limited literature that considers the role of parent perceptions and expectations of coaching when providing coach development programs in community youth sport settings. The creative research project Views from Expatria: Photographing Place and the Self in transience by Dr Ioannis Galanopoulos Papavasileiou examines human displacement, identity, the role of place and its relationship to the transient condition of being in 'Expatria'. The project uses extensively the concepts 'view,' 'landscape,' and 'place.' In photography, art, and contemporary theory there is a history of conflict, convergence, and misappropriation about these concepts, which has informed the creation of the works. This article complicates the concepts and situates them within the practice-based project. The concept 'view of place' is revisited and reinstated as significant in contemporary setting and practice and examined side-by-side with the highly complex term, landscape. The term 'view of place' is chosen against older modalities of place representation in search of a more unrestricted definition that houses the hybrid studio practices embedded in Views from Expatria project. Loneliness in childhood and adolescence is currently measured using questionnaires and checklists. The most used questionnaires for youth are psychometrically limited, partly due to the absence of the young person's voice from the measurement development process. Given this gap in the literature, the current study explored primary-school aged children's understanding and experiences of loneliness, providing new information about the experience of loneliness in childhood to better inform conceptualisation and measurement of loneliness in children. Interviews took place during the COVID pandemic and were conducted with six Year 4 and 5 children (aged 8–10 years) and analysed using hybrid thematic analysis. Findings fit with existing conceptualisations of social and emotional loneliness and provide novel perspectives on solutions, the importance of play, and children's perceptions of the adult experience. Twenty-seven empirical studies were identified that empirically estimated the impact on property values of views of open space. The review differentiated between street level and high-rise building views. Among the 17 street-level view studies, only five found substantial premiums which ranged from 4.9% to 9.29%, while four others reported either a small increase in value or mixed results. Five studies reported low-elevation views had no impact. Three reported a negative premium which was antithetical to expectations. In all three cases the view was of forest land, not parks or open space. Only ten studies addressed the impact of views from elevated buildings and nine of them were undertaken in China. The highest premiums were for views of residential gardens which two studies estimated at 24% and 17.2%. Five studies reported view premiums for neighborhood parks averaging 5.6%, while two studies counter-intuitively reported that mountain views had a negative premium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gender-Based (GB) intimate partner violence is a social and public health issue globally. Several risks of violence related to male sexual partners' perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV) following the disclosure of their female intimate partners' HIV + status have been reported. No research has been conducted on male sexual partner's perspectives of perpetrating IPV following their female intimate partners' disclosure of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seropositive status as a risk factor for the perpetration of IPV in Ghana. The objective of this study is to explore and describe male sexual partners' views or perspectives of perpetrating IPV following their female intimate partners' disclosure of being HIV positive in Ghana. Interpretive phenomenological approach was used to collect and analyse data from a purposive sample of 18 Male participants whose female intimate relations informed them of being HIV + in Ghana. The sample population was taken from Ghana because such research has been reported elsewhere but none has been done in Ghana. A semi-structured interview guide was used to collect the data. The interview guide covered topics such as background information, participants' reaction to HIV positive disclosure, lived experiences of participants, and Participants' understanding of different forms of IPV. The findings of this study reveal five main themes that emerged from the interviews which include views on the perpetration of emotional, psychological, and verbal abuse; views on the perpetration of sexual deprivation; views on the perpetration of social isolation; views on the perpetration of financial abuse and views on escalated perpetration of physical abuse. From the data, HIV positive status disclosure served as a risk factor for different forms of GB IPV against HIV positive women in Ghana, thus making this group more vulnerable and exposed to more GB IPV. Strategies to prevent the perpetration of IPV against women newly diagnosed as HIV positive are needed. We recommend screening all newly diagnosed HIV-positive women for abuse as an additional prevention strategy for IPV associated with disclosure of positive HIV status. HIV positive status disclosure serves as a risk for the perpetration of IPV. Men are predisposed to violence upon hearing that their female heterosexual intimate partners are HIV positive. Patients with functional stroke can present with functional speech, language or swallowing symptoms, which are managed by speech and language therapists (SLTs). The aim of this study was to explore SLTs' views and experiences of working with patients with functional stroke. Constructivist grounded theory approach was used. Semi-structured interviews were the method of data collection. Constant comparative analysis was used to analyse data. Participants were eligible if they were SLTs who thought they had experience of working with functional stroke. 12 participants were interviewed. Patients with functional stroke were a common occurrence on participants' caseloads; yet they felt patients do not receive optimum care. All participants wanted to help their patients, yet felt they were working within a multitude of barriers to effective input. These included: stigma about the diagnosis, lack of pre-qualification training, quick discharge from inpatient settings, lack of access to mental health services and lack of clinical guidelines and care pathways. As healthcare professionals, participants were keen to help their patients. However, they felt they did not have the skills or knowledge to help which caused professional turmoil. The objective of this review was to synthesise studies which address the views of healthcare professionals (HCPs) towards patients with functional neurological disorder (FND). An interpretive systematised review was conducted. Seven databases were searched using a comprehensive search strategy (MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED, CINAHL, PsychINFO, ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health, and Scopus). Qualitative studies and those using survey methods were included. An inductive approach to thematic analysis was used to identify concepts from the data and to synthesise the results. The views of 2769 HCPs were represented in 11 included articles. The overarching theme across the articles was uncertainty: about making the diagnosis of FND, about professional roles, and about optimum management. Fear was also a common theme: of saying the wrong thing, of offending patients, or of breaking the therapeutic relationship. If all HCPs felt uncertain about how to manage patients with FND and avoided them by passing them on to another discipline, then a "vicious cycle" is formed in which patients are passed from one professional to another but without receiving clear, honest information, or effective treatment. HCPs would benefit from increased training on FND and clear clinical pathways to alleviate feelings of uncertainty. Evidence-based or, at the very least, consensus-based multi-disciplinary care pathways for the assessment and treatment of patients with functional neurological disorder are required to improve equitability of services. Training packages for healthcare professionals need to be developed, evaluated and implemented in order to improve confidence of making and explaining the diagnosis and to reduce stigma of functional neurological disorders. Improved input for patients with functional neurological disorder is likely to occur if healthcare professionals are open, honest and use effective communication skills, both with their patients and fellow healthcare professionals. This research investigated the views of different stakeholders regarding the specialist mental health service for people with intellectual disabilities (ID) in Singapore. Interviews were conducted with mental health professionals, family carers and service users with ID. Framework analysis was adopted to identify common dominant themes among the different participant groups. Analysis revealed four themes 1) Giving choice and autonomy; 2) Training to become competent; 3) Respect and 4) Part of the community People with ID living in Singapore have limited opportunities to express their choices and autonomy especially when it comes to treatment planning. Family carers have a significant influence on the level of community presence of their relatives with ID. Participants identified employment for people with ID as a way to improve public perceptions. There was no mention of people with ID developing social relationships. Recommendations are discussed in the context of current service provision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Healthcare payers are increasingly adopting managed entry agreements (MEAs) between themselves and manufacturers, to overcome the challenge of sustaining access in an era of innovative and high-cost medicines. This study aims to investigate current MEA activity in Saudi Arabia and explore the challenges encountered when implementing such agreements.Methods: An explanatory sequential mixed-methods approach was used. Quantitative data on MEAs were collected, followed by qualitative semi-structured interviews with different stakeholders.Results: Our questionnaire garnered responses from 18 pharmaceutical companies from 3 different continents and identified 25 agreements in Saudi Arabia since 2010. Financial-based agreements were more prevalent than outcomes-based agreements at 44% versus 32%, respectively. Stakeholders showed positive attitudes toward MEAs, valuing their benefits in facilitating market access for both costly and innovative medicines. The main challenges included data availability, administrative and financial burden, lack of expertise, confidentiality, and lack of clear regulations.Conclusions: Despite clear implementation challenges, a growing tendency toward MEAs exists in Saudi Arabia because of the potential benefits they bring to patients, healthcare providers, payers, and manufacturers. The provision of daylight, fresh air, and of a view outdoors are among the known characteristics of windows. But how does the perception of a window differ when it becomes the primary way of connecting to the physical world outside? In the first half of 2020, many countries resorted to strict lockdown measures to control the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The impact of such confinement, and the restriction to movement and social contact between people, is currently undergoing intense research. As such, this study reports the findings of a global online survey, administered before and after the COVID-19 outbreak, aimed at identifying whether any significant difference related to the lockdown could be observed in the perception of windows. The results confirm a practically relevant increase in the importance given to windows as a way to provide an external view and a visual and social connection with other people. Conversely, the role of the window as a conveyor of information on weather and time of the day was less prevalent. This is one of the first studies evaluating the difference in the perception of windows within a period of enforced lockdown. The findings can help capture the psychological impacts of confinement on people and may be relevant when transferred to other domains where building occupants could strongly benefit from the restorative effects of window views. This article argues, through examples drawn mainly from the Sutta Piṭaka, that the Pali texts are characterised by an empirical realism that avoids neither the grim realities of conflict nor the underlying forces that drive it. Suttas such as the Cakkavatti-sīhanāda Sutta and the Mahā-dukkha-kkhanda Sutta are obvious examples of this realism. So also is the Aṅgulimāla Sutta, which deals with the phenomenon of a serial killer. Other texts examine causation, the Mahā-nidāna Sutta, for instance, which applies Buddhist causation theories to conflict and other forms of disruption in society. All focus on the almost intractable nature of conflict, when greed, hatred and delusion are embodied within human cultures and communities, producing diverse constructions of reality, fed by papañca, proliferating thought. I will argue that the empirical realism shown by texts such as the above can throw light on some of the bitter contexts of armed conflict that Buddhists are caught up in within the contemporary world, as combatants, humanitarian workers or members of civilian communities. They point to the difficulties that can arise, for instance, when humanitarian workers seek to enter zones of armed conflict to protect civilians and to encourage compliance with international humanitarian law (IHL) as set out in customary law and treaties such as the Geneva Conventions and its Additional Protocols. The strength of the diverse constructions of reality present can mean that IHL, and also the demands of compassion, are subordinated to other concerns. This article therefore argues that Buddhism offers not only tools for effective compliance with IHL within situations of armed conflict, but also an analytical model for understanding why some contexts of armed conflict are resistant to the principles embodied in this law. It also suggests a primary initial role for external authorities in guarding against IHL abuses, before armed services personnel can cultivate mindful inner discipline in line with Buddhist ideals. Despite the widespread ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, children continue to struggle to have their participation rights recognised and supported. This is evident within family law, where despite sometimes progressive and strong legislation, children's views are often not heard, nor given due weight, when parent-child contact is contested within the courts. This paper explores barriers to children's participation rights being realised. It uses Scotland as the example, due to its strong legal safeguards and mechanisms that aim to support participation rights. The paper draws on recent empirical research with legal professionals, combined with an analysis of reported case law and relevant literature, to explore the barriers 'on the ground' for children's participation rights. Through our analysis, we offer new ways to conceptualise the notion of influence in children's participation rights in family actions. Reducing the environmental impacts of energy production and consumption is part of addressing climate change. Prior research finds political-economic factors shape climate change views, perceptions of and policy support for renewable and nonrenewable energy, and pro-environmental behaviors (PEBs). This study contributes to research in these three areas by empirically testing the anti-reflexivity thesis, which posits that forces defending the industrial capitalist system are sources of anti-reflexivity, obstructing critical self-evaluation and societal action to address climate change. Using OLS and logistic regression analysis of survey data from respondents in five states in the US Intermountain West region, we find empirical support for the effect of anti-reflexivity on climate views, energy policy support, and PEBs. We also find that PEBs in the Intermountain West still largely occur in the realm of personal conservation actions rather than being politically focused, collectively organized, or leading toward systemic change. This paper investigates research from the Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce over the time frame 2016–2020 and captures the primary topics of those most cited papers in order to better understand those research topics of greatest interest. In addition, this paper performs a bibliometric analysis of those papers, analyzing citations, views, and other factors associated with those papers. As part of that analysis, this paper finds that the number of views of a paper, is related to Altmetric activity and whether or not a paper is available on open access. The paper also finds that the number of Google, Dimensions and Crossref citations are correlated and positively related to the number of Views and the amount of Altmetric activity. The notion of inclusion has gained momentum worldwide, with most countries around the world embracing inclusive policies in their educational systems. However, there is still an ongoing debate as to what is inclusion and hence, the consequent challenge of coming up with an agreed definition, which could then be used to plan for and subsequently, evaluate, inclusion. This study adds to our understanding of inclusion by contrasting objective (i.e. School Census Statistics) and subjective (i.e. self-report questionnaire) measures of inclusivity in three mainstream secondary schools in England and by comparing the perceptions of school inclusivity of different groups of educational practitioners and pupils. The results of this study indicate that inclusion is a 'slippery' construct as the perception of inclusion of educational practitioners was found to be affected by their role at school while pupil perception on this matter depended upon their SEND category. However, despite these subjective differences in the way inclusion is perceived, there was also substantial agreement across the different categories of participants with regard to the relative ranking of inclusivity across the three schools suggesting that coming up with overarching themes on what is inclusion is achievable. Transition research tends to consider the experiences of typically developing pupils and often focuses on the primary to secondary school transition. Accounts that specifically focus on the views of autistic pupils also tend to rely heavily on the accounts of parents and staff. This study explored the transition experiences of four young autistic adults in further education from the perspective of the young people themselves. The free association Grid Elaboration Method was used to elicit the views of four young autistic adults enrolled in further education, followed by thematic analysis of the data. Researcher field notes were used to support the analysis. Six themes were identified: (a) Resilience, (b) Growth and Development, (c) Relationships, (d) Mental Wellbeing, (e) Agency and (f) Understanding Difference. The views from, and of, 252 probably unmoved rock-art sites on Rombalds Moor, West Yorkshire were examined. It is suggested that five of these sites, all large and unusually shaped, were identified as natural monuments, and referenced by carvings on much smaller sites from which they could be seen. Purpose: Based on focus groups, we analyse how practical nursing students deal with being as smokers and future healthcare workers. The way they justify their smoking is discussed within a group of peers. Methods: The study has a qualitative design with an inductive approach using focus group interviews (FGIs) for data collection. A total of 29 students were interviewed in five groups of five and one group of four participants. Results: In the analysis, we found four different discursive practices the students utilized for rationalizing their own smoking and coping with the moral dilemma of smoking in a context of health care where smoking is forbidden: (1) students normalized smoking with references to its prevalence within their social circles, (2) the students asserted that their smoking was under control, (3) students considered themselves responsible smokers, and (4) students identified smoking as a part of their identity. Conclusion: Training should support the growth of professional identity and address the smoker's identity right from the start of education. We explore students choice of using computer algebra systems (CAS) in problem-solving relative to their self-reported attitude towards learning mathematics with CAS. Our research design is a case study of nine Norwegian upper-secondary mathematics students with a wide range of attitude towards CAS. Our findings on routine problems indicate that (1) students use CAS whenever students perceive the problem as time-consuming regardless of their attitude towards CAS, and (2) students attitude affects their use of CAS whenever students perceive the problem as non-time-consuming. Norway, among other countries, has implemented CAS as an essential digital resource towards learning mathematics in upper-secondary school. Webometrics techniques were used to establish the extent of deployment and impact of LibGuides at public universities in South Africa using their content, usage, and views. There are 1,166 LibGuides hosted by 16 universities, and published by 299 owners in South Africa giving the country a 0.22% of the world's share of LibGuides, and a 0.22% share of the world's LibGuides owners. Each LibGuide owner in the country owns almost four LibGuides. Close to 70% of public universities in South Africa own LibGuides. The University of the Witwatersrand has more LibGuides than any other university followed by the Universities of Cape Town, South Africa, Johannesburg, Stellenbosch, and others. 68.4% of LibGuides in South Africa are faculty and department LibGuides followed by "how to" guides (8.94%). Another finding was that the Ranking Web of Universities correlates moderately with the university rankings by number of LibGuides in the country meaning that LibGuides may play some role in enhancing or at least proving the extent of a university's Web presence and visibility. The views data shows mixed results as North-West University (NWU) views have increased by close to 571% between 2014 and 2015 while those of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) were inconsistent. The combined CPUT and NWU LibGuides cost R0.56 per view, all other factors such as the time and effort it takes to create LibGuides excluded. The results of this study can be used by libraries to demonstrate the value of LibGuides to academic libraries. Therefore, the continued subscription to LibGuides by academic libraries is supported. This study examined the similarities and differences between parent and adolescent views on cyberbullying in the US, and how adolescents and parents view parents' role in addressing this issue. Purposeful sampling was used to identify participants. A total of 131 participants took part in 14 focus groups. The participants were 69% female, 50% were adults, and 68% Caucasian. Results showed that when discussing cyberbullying, adolescents focused on how we relate to one another when cyberbullying occurs and parents focused on the repercussions of cyberbullying. Adolescents and parents agreed that parents needed to do a better job of trying to understand how their adolescents engage with others on social media in order to become effective allies in addressing this issue. Objective: Little is known about how first episode bipolar disorder (BD) is managed in early intervention for psychosis services (EIS). We aimed to investigate the knowledge and views of EIS staff on the assessment and treatment of BD. Methods: A 27-item anonymised online questionnaire was distributed to EIS mental health professionals in England. Descriptive data analysis was undertaken. Results: Responses were received from 117 EIS staff. Most were 'fairly confident' in their knowledge about causes, presentations and relapse indicators of BD, but less confident on pharmacological and psychological treatments. Eighty five percent expressed the view that more BD training was necessary in this area with 78% reporting no clear care packages within the service. Seventy two percent believe early BD should be treated within EIS only if patients have psychosis. Background: Robots are introduced in many health and social care settings. Objectives: To provide an overview of the existing evidence related to the views of nurses and other health and social care workers about the use of assistive humanoid and animal-like robots. Methods: Using the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines we searched MEDLINE, PUBMED, CINHAL, EMBASE, PsycInfo, Web of Science, and IEEE Xplore digital library. Nineteen (19) articles met the criteria for inclusion. Results: Health care workers reported mixed views regarding the use of robots. They considered an array of tasks that robots could perform; they addressed the issue of patient safety and raised concerns about privacy. Conclusions: A limited number of studies have explored the views of health care workers about the use of robots. Considering the fast pace with which technology is advancing in the care field, it is critical to conduct more research in this area. Concerns have been expressed about the long term inclusion of students with social, emotional and mental health difficulties in mainstream education. Often, this results in continuous referrals with alternative provision. Whilst student views have been explored, there has been a lack of research focusing on perspectives within Primary education. The study aimed to examine whether student views change across Primary and Secondary education. A qualitative design and phenomenological investigation were followed. Through purposive sampling, a total of 13 semi-structured interviews were conducted with students aged 7-16 years from 3 Pupil Referral Units. Using phenomenological data analysis, findings reflect stability in external attributions and supportive factors. However, views about reintegration contrasted with Secondary students expressing low self-worth. Findings highlight mutual perspectives, with conclusions indicating that alternative provision may exacerbate mental health difficulties. An Augmented virtual environment (AVE) is concerned with the fusion of real-time video with 3D models or scenes so as to augment the virtual environment. In this paper, a new approach to establish an AVE with a wide field of view is proposed, including real-time video projection, multiple video texture fusion and 3D visualization of moving objects. A new diagonally weighted algorithm is proposed to smooth the apparent gaps within the overlapping area between the two adjacent videos. A visualization method for the location and trajectory of a moving virtual object is proposed to display the moving object and its trajectory in the 3D virtual environment. The experimental results showed that the proposed set of algorithms are able to fuse multiple real-time videos with 3D models efficiently, and the experiment runs a 3D scene containing two million triangles and six real-time videos at around 55 frames per second on a laptop with 1GB of graphics card memory. In addition, a realistic AVE with a wide field of view was created based on the Digital Earth Science Platform by fusing three videos with a complex indoor virtual scene, visualizing a moving object and drawing its trajectory in the real time. Galvanised by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, many jurisdictions now recognise children’s rights to participate in decisions that affect them. While such legal rights have increased, research on family law proceedings shows how children’s views can still be undermined, ignored or not even sought in decisions about them. This article uses the academic resources of childhood studies, to consider dominant and alternative narratives of children’s participation within Scottish family law. Drawing upon reported case law and empirical research, the article concludes that children’s participation gains protection by being institutionalised but children’s participation is attenuated because it is not recognised as relational and contextual. As rationality, consistency and autonomy are privileged, the weight given to children’s views is lessened by concerns about children being manipulated or distressed. The objectives of this work are to examine the primary school students’ attitudes towards students with disabilities. The findings of the research indicate that the majority of typically developing students has a positive attitude towards their classmates with disabilities. However, they are not so much in favour of inclusion. According to the research data, a number of factors including the age of the students, their gender, their previous experience with people with disabilities, the information they have received from their parents regarding disabilities, intervene and determine the success of inclusion of students with disability but also influence the students’ attitudes towards their classmates with disability. This article presents a case study of 10 high-profile Australian research scientists. These scientists are highly committed to engaging with the public. They interact with a wide range of groups in the community, including the traditional media. They are aware that they are seen as representatives of science at a time when the authority of science and scientists is threatened in Australia by controversy around issues such as climate change and vaccination. Through their experiences of interacting with non-scientists, they have developed views about qualities, characteristics and knowledge that contribute to, or inhibit, positive interactions between scientists and non-scientists. This paper describes a study about factors impacting the perceived quality of the view out of the office window that was carried out in Trondheim, Norway, in 2013. A total of 106 subjects were visited in their respective working environments. The subjects were asked to evaluate the quality of the view from their typical working (sitting) position on a four-point scale: not satisfactory, satisfactory, good, excellent. The view was documented by taking pictures from the subject's eye position in the direction of the window(s). A regression analysis shows that the view quality evaluated by subjects is best predicted by the view distance, the number of view layers, the quality of the landscape/elements and the composition of the view. The view width, the extent of greenery in the view, the presence of water, the weather conditions, or gender and age were not found to contribute additionally to the perceived view quality. In this commentary, I respond to Ilies, Aw & Pluut’s (Intraindividual models of employee well-being: What have we learned and where do we go from here?,European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, in press) call for a theory that distinguishes between traits and states of employee well-being. I use Job Demands–Resources theory to illustrate how we may integrate within- and between-person approaches and findings to design an overall multilevel model of employee well-being. My perspective builds on Ilies et al. and recent findings of research combining relatively stable “traits” with fluctuating states of employee well-being. My goals with this commentary are three-fold: (1) give more insight into possible differences between variables at different levels of analysis; (2) use research to show how trait and state levels of (predictors of) employee well-being may interact; (3) propose a multilevel model that may stimulate future research on the topic. This paper considers how listening to children’s views and taking account of them is understood in different ways by educational psychologists. Rationales for listening to children include (1) supporting their rights to express views, (2) therapeutic benefits of participation, and either (3) valuing their views as insightful contributions to problem-solving or (4) considering them as contributory factors to the problem. This creates dilemmas about interpretation on different occasions, and a range of theoretical stances are discussed in terms of how far they can support robust decision-making about this interpretation, and a practical way forward is suggested using principles based on critical realism. Objective. Referrals to specialists have not been compulsory in Iceland since 1984. In 2006, referrals were again required for patients to receive reimbursement for part of the cost of appointments with cardiologists. The aim of this study was to explore GPs' attitudes to the referral system and possible professional gain by interactive communications. Design. Cross-sectional questionnaire survey. Setting, subjects, and main outcome measures. This is part of a larger study in 2007 on referrals from GPs to cardiologists. A questionnaire was sent to all working GPs in Iceland (n = 201 and responsible for 307 000 inhabitants) regarding the referral process, reasons for referrals, how often a response letter was received, and GPs' attitudes to the referral system. Responses from doctors working in rural areas were compared with those working in Reykjavik and nearby urban areas. Results. The response rate was 63% (126 answers). The mean age of participants was 51; 89% were GP specialists and 60% worked in Reykjavik and nearby urban areas. Almost all respondents (98%) thought that report letters from cardiologists were helpful; 64% (95% confidence interval 53-73) thought that the recently introduced referral system did increase useful information that was beneficial to their patients. There was a statistically significant difference between colleagues working in rural areas and those working in Reykjavik and nearby urban areas regarding several aspects of the referral process. Conclusion. A referral system increases the flow of information and mutual communications between general practitioners and specialists to the benefit of the patients. Anecdotal accounts from science educators suggest that few teachers are teaching science as inquiry. However, there is little empirical evidence to support this claim. This study aimed to provide evidence-based documentation of the state-of-use of inquiry-based instruction and explicit instruction about nature of science (NOS). We examined the teaching practice and views of inquiry and NOS of 26, well-qualified and highly motivated 5th-9th-grade teachers from across the country in order to establish the extent to which their views and practice aligned with ideas in reform-based documents. We used a mixed-methods approach analyzing lesson descriptions, classroom observations, videotape data, questionnaires, and interviews to assess teaching practice and views of inquiry and NOS of these teachers. We also determined the relationships between teachers' views and their teaching practice. Findings indicated the majority of these teachers held limited views of inquiry-based instruction and NOS. In general, these views were reflected in their teaching practice. Elements of inquiry including abilities, understandings, and essential features were observed or described in less than half the classrooms. Most commonly, teachers focused on basic abilities to do inquiry instead of the essential features or important understandings about inquiry. When aspects of inquiry were present, they were generally teacher-initiated. There was also little evidence of aspects of NOS in teachers' instruction. This study provides empirical evidence for the claim that even some of the best teachers currently struggle to enact reformed-based teaching. Further, it highlights the critical need for an agreement upon definition of inquiry-based instruction and the need to develop appropriate and feasible assessments that specifically target inquiry to track changes in teachers' views and practice. Important implications include the heightened need for rigorous and continuous professional development to support teachers in learning about inquiry and NOS and how to enact reform-based instruction in classrooms. Objectives. To improve education and information for general practitioners in relation to rational antibiotic prescribing for urinary tract infection (UTI), it is important to be aware of GPs' views of resistance and how it influences their choice of UTI treatment. The aim of this study was to explore variations in views of resistance and UTI treatment decisions among general practitioners (GPs) in a county in Sweden. Design. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews were analysed with a phenomenographic approach and content analysis. Setting. Primary care in Kronoberg, a county in southern Sweden. Subjects. A purposeful sample of 20 GPs from 15 of 25 health centres in the county. Main outcome measures. The variation of perceptions of antibiotic resistance in UTI treatment. How UTIs were treated according to the GPs. Results. Three different ways of viewing resistance in UTI treatment were identified. These were: (A) No problem, I have never seen resistance, (B) The problem is bigger somewhere else, and (C) The development of antibiotic resistance is serious and we must be careful. Moreover, GPs' perceptions of antibiotic resistance were mirrored in how they reported their treatment of UTIs in practice. Conclusion. There was a hierarchal scale of how GPs viewed resistance as an issue in UTI treatment. Only GPs who expressed concerns about resistance followed prescribing guidelines completely.
