Objective: Type 1 diabetes is primarily researched as a medical condition; an examination of the subjective experience of it appears to be neglected. This study explored young women's meaning-making of living with type 1 diabetes in an attempt to uncover possible positive outcomes of growth and optimism. Design: Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) enabled the in-depth exploration of the journeys of a group of young female adults living with type 1 diabetes from distress to positive outcomes. Six participants between the ages of 18 and 25 were recruited from a Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, in Parktown, South Africa, to participate in semi-structured interviews about their meaning-making process. Results: Three superordinate themes emerged: (1) the process of reappraising a life with diabetes; (2) the development of diabetes as a lifestyle; and (3) positive outcomes of living with diabetes. Conclusion: Findings in this study demonstrate how the meaning-making process has a significant impact on positive adjustment to living with diabetes. While participants experienced distress, they reframed living with diabetes as an opportunity for empowerment and personal growth. Actively seeking and promoting of the positive outcomes of meaning-making could assist young adults to improve their quality of life while living with diabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This rapid review aimed to synthesise the evidence on father involvement in managing their child's type 1 diabetes. We identified eight articles from EBSCO, Science Direct, Academic Search Premier, Psyclnfo, PsycArticles, and Google Scholar. Studies were included if they provided information on fathers' involvement in diabetes management, were published between 2010 to 2020 in English as full-text peer reviewed articles, and employed qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods. Following thematic synthesis, findings indicated that fathers were directly involved in blood glucose checking and planning of diabetes management tasks, and indirectly in terms of finances, general care of the child, and advocating in schools for children living with diabetes. These findings suggest fathers involved in the management of their child's diabetes were critical to successful management, although the voices of fathers in this context may be neglected. Health practitioners run the risk of ethical board complaints or legal action against them in their professional careers. This experience can have a detrimental impact on personal wellness and professional practice. This study reports on the subjective experience of ten South African psychologists who received complaints. Semi structured interviews were conducted, and the transcripts analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The data indicates that (1) the participants experienced the effects of a complaint on an intensely personal level and (2) the experience of a complaint highlighted the challenging nature of working in the modern health care arena. The researchers hope to inform the psychological community of the emotional challenges experienced during a complaint process, to encourage a transparent discourse about the subject and muster support for practitioners during an often-isolating professional incident. Upon receiving a professional misconduct complaint, practitioners are required to manage the complaint process while continuing with their professional work. The stress of a complaint may manifest in emotional difficulties and physical symptoms calling for supportive intervention. We explored the coping strategies used by a group of South African psychologists (n = 10; females = 8; age range = 45–70 years) who managed a professional misconduct complaint. Participants completed semi-structured interviews on how they coped with the experience of a complaint, their coping strategies, and who or what helped them to cope. Thematic analysis of the data revealed that on a personal and professional level, the psychologists coped by employing cognitive-behavioural strategies and utilising personal and professional support systems. Their personal coping strategies included seeking out support structures, developing other interests and roles, drawing on existing personal strengths and attributes, and reappraising the complaint through faith and humour. Strategies for professional support included doing research, purposefully sharing the experience with others, responding to the complaint, continuing to work, and accepting the risks of psychological practice. Regarding canvassing support from their personal and professional networks, the practitioners received additional supervision, shared their experience to inform and teach others, and utilised professional services where necessary. We conclude that practitioner psychologists with a professional misconduct complaint canvas both their personal and professional resources to resolve the distress of a complaint. This study aimed to explore and describe the role of social support in successful living with type 1 diabetes. Informants were eight emerging adults with well-controlled type 1 diabetes (females = 5; white = 7, African = 1; mean time since diagnosis = 8.5 years, SD time since diagnosis = 6.23 years). They completed semi-structured interviews on their types and sources of social support for successful diabetes management. Thematic analysis of the data revealed important social support agents, which included family members, friends, and their healthcare professionals; as well as the social support mechanisms these individuals provided. Social support appeared to help the participants with diabetes management through facilitation of shared knowledge regarding management of type 1 diabetes, fostering a sense of belonging and companionship, and practical assistance with daily regimen tasks. Objective: The aim of this study was to systematically review available literature pertaining to the psychological effects of multimedia-induced sexualisation of girls in middle childhood (between the ages of 6 and 12 years old). Method: A systematic review was conducted through a comprehensive electronic search. Nineteen studies were included in the review and the data was analysed by means of qualitative content analysis. Results: Two themes were identified, namely: 1) detrimental psychological effects of sexualisation; and 2) beneficial psychological effects of sexualisation. Findings appeared to indicate that the psychological effects on girls in middle childhood resulting from sexualisation, such as internalisation, mental health problems, objectification and gender stereotyping, were more likely to be detrimental than beneficial to their well-being. The review also found a paucity of research on the topic within developing countries. Consequently, the authors recommended a precautionary approach pertaining to sexualisation of girls in middle childhood. Conclusion: A thorough understanding of the topic is valuable as it can inform a preventative and proactive management approach. In this study, researchers explored mothers’ coping strategies in dealing with birth by unplanned Caesarean section. Mothers’ experiences of a traumatic birth could be influenced by perceived strengths when coping with the stress related to the incident. Coping strategies resulted in reassessment of the birth process and were associated with a more positive and memorable experience. In-depth interviews with 10 women explored their lived experiences of childbirth. Data were analyzed thematically. Phenomenological theory served as a framework for the structuring, organizing, and categorizing of data. Mothers described several factors and coping strategies that they perceived to be effective in reducing the impact of their traumatic birth experiences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Divorce is a common modern phenomenon. Changes in legislation to support the best-interest-of-the-child principle are argued to have escalated conflict between parents during custody disputes. Parental alienation syndrome (PAS) is a controversial concept in high-conflict divorces and has received both praise and criticism over the past 2 decades. This study explores the experiences of psychologists working with PAS in private practice. A snowball sample (n= 8) of psychologists willingly participated in the study. Data collection took place by means of in-depth interviews. Transcribed data were analyzed by means of thematic analysis, and themes and subthemes were derived. The 2 main categories that emerged were the participants’ general understanding of PAS and the operational and practical experiences working with PAS. The participants working with PAS referred to it as complex and destructive. The involvement of lawyers, parental pathology, and legislation all contribute to the complex task of intervening in cases where PAS is present. The impact of working with such a complex phenomenon has emotional effects like self-doubt, disappointment, and anxiety. In some cases, this resulted in an active decision on the part of the psychologist not to work with forensic cases any more. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explored the impact of an unplanned Caesarean section on mother-infant bonding, by examining the development of maternal identities and mothers' subsequent relationships with their babies. In-depth interviews with 10 women (mean age=28; SD=1.97) explored their lived experiences of mother-infant bonding after an unplanned Caesarean childbirth. Participants perceived an unplanned Caesarean birth to adversely impact the development of a maternal role identity, the formation of balanced maternal attachment representations, caregiving abilities, and initial mother-infant bonding. This study piloted the efficacy of a short-term intervention program for socio-emotional development in pre-schoolers. in a South African setting. Participants were 48 learners, aged between 5 and 6 years (22 boys, 26 girls). A proportion of the participants (n=26) took the socio-emotional competence development intervention. Programme effects were measured using the Social Competence and Behavioural Evaluation, Preschool Edition (SCBE) and the Griffiths Developmental Scales -- Extended Revised (GMDS-ER). The study investigated the mutual perception of relationships between mothers with day and night shift work and their teenage children. A cross-sectional survey using purposeful sampling was used. Two groups of 35 mothers and their adolescent children completed a Parent-Adolescent Relationship-Questionnaire (Robin, Koepke, Moye & Gerhardsteln, 2009). Data was analysed by means of SAS and SPSS programmes. Findings show that adolescent children of day shift working mothers perceive communication and problem solving with their mothers as more efficient than adolescent children of night shift working mothers. Global Distress was lower in day shift mothers and their children. Night shirt work lowers the perceived quality of parenting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
