In the present research, a novel kind of homogeneous cation-exchange membranes were provided by solution casting technique via blending of sulfonated polyvinylchloride (SPVC) and sulfonated poly phenylene oxide (SPPO). The performance of the membranes was evaluated by membrane potential, areal resistance, transport number, ionic permeability, ion-exchange capacity, fixed ion concentration, energy consumption (EC), current efficiency, mechanical properties, membrane oxidative stability, water contact angle and water content tests. The microstructures of the membranes were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Membrane with 70:30 (w/w) composition (SPPO: SPVC) exhibited suitable efficiency, mechanical strength and oxidative stability in comparison with other samples in this study. Also, amino groups have been successfully attached to the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) structure and the modified MWCNTs were selected as filler additive. The results revealed that a series of membranes with improved transport properties, hydrophilicity and EC can be prepared with the polymeric matrix-containing aminated-MWCNTs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Composite gel polymer electrolytes (CGPE) were prepared using 1,3 Dioxolane (DIOX)/Tetraethyleneglycol dimethylether (TEGDME) as a combination of plasticizers, comprising with PEO, lithium salt (LiClO4) with the addition of filler SiO2. The composite gel polymer electrolytes were prepared by simple solution casting technique in an argon atmosphere. The electrolyte films were subjected to thermal, structural, morphological and electrochemical ac impedance analysis. A Lithium symmetric cell (Li/CGPE/Li) was fabricated and interfacial resistance as a function of time was studied. The film was thermally stable up to 298 °C. The ionic conductivity of high conducting sample is obtained in the order of 10−4 at ambient temperature. The transport properties of the gel polymer electrolyte were measured and the values are 0.6 which is sufficient for battery applications. A new form of nanocomposite zirconium phosphoborate (ZrPB) ion exchanger incorporating multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been fabricated and studied. Commercial purity CNTs were used as dopant in ZrPB matrix. The topography and morphology of the composite has been explored with the help of scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The microscopy results confirm the spherical nature and 2–5 nm size of ZrPB particles. CNTs are well reinforced evenly in ZrPB matrix. Multifunctionality of the nanocomposite ion exchange material has been studied for electrochemical characteristics as well as for photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye. Novel liquid crystalline polyesters of cholesterol, Polycholesteryl-3,3-dimethylacrylate (PCHDMA) and Polycholesterylcrotonate (PCHC) are synthesized by free radical polymerization and characterized by FT-IR,1H-NMR, and GPC analysis. The thermal properties are studied by TGA and DSC techniques. The liquid crystalline phases are detected under hot stage optical microscope. Electronic conduction in the polymers is determined by Wagner polarization technique. There is about 5000 fold decrease in the impedance values of both PCHDMA and PCHC on increasing the frequencies from 40 Hz to 1 MHz at 30°C. Ionically conducting polymers, frequently known as polymer electrolytes, are potential candidates as hosts for drugs to be delivered iontophoretically. The iontophoretic delivery of lithium or lidocaine from polymer electrolyte films through a cellophane membrane was examined using different delivery current regimes. Thin, mechanically strong, polymer electrolyte films were fabricated from poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with lithium chloride or lidocaine hydrochloride. Experiments showed that iontophoretic transport of both lithium chloride and lidocaine hydrochloride might be achieved from these PEO-based films. Cation transport number determinations give values for PEO-based films of about 0.4 for lithium chloride systems and 0.12 for lidocaine hydrochloride systems. The mechanism of transport from these PEO-based polymer electrolyte films allows the delivery of ionic salts such as lithium chloride and lidocaine hydrochloride to be controlled solely by current, thus providing a system that can deliver precise amounts of drug.
