Herbal plants have gained enormous interest due to their immune, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities. The present study proposed that white poplar (Populus alba) leave extract (WPE) might provide a promising alternative to traditional antibiotics to treat Aeromonas veronii infection in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). WPE showed an in vitro antibacterial activity [22 ± 0.45 mm inhibition zone, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 60 µg/mL] against A. veronii. For the in-vivo study, a factorial (2 × 2) design was used to investigate the therapeutic effects of WPE on the antioxidant/immune status and blood biochemical parameters of Nile tilapia challenged with A. veronii. One-hundred sixty fish (33 ± 1.5 g) were assigned into four experimental groups, each with four replicates (4 glass tanks/group, 40 fish/group, 10 fish/tank) for 10 days. In the first (1st) and 2nd groups, 0 and 1.5 mg/L WPE were applied in tank water, respectively, without fish being challenged. In the 3rd and 4th groups, 0 and 1.5 mg/L WPE were applied in tank water, respectively, with fish intraperitoneal inoculated with 0.2 mL of A. veronii (0.5 × 107 CFU). Aeromonas veronii infection significantly diminished the survivability, hepatic catalase, lysozyme activity, nitric oxide, immunoglobulin M, phagocytic %, total protein, albumin, and globulin. Moreover, a significant rise in the hepatic malondialdehyde, serum hepatorenal function indicators, cortisol, and glucose levels were consequences of A. veronii challenge. Interestingly, the interaction between bacterial challenge and WPE application increased the survivability, antioxidant activity, and immune responses and reduced ALT levels of fish treated with WPE during the bacterial challenge. The serum creatinine, cortisol, and glucose levels were decreased in fish treated with WPE during the infection but still higher than in the non-infected fish either treated or not treated with WPE. In conclusion, WPE (1.5 mg/L) can be used as an antibacterial substance in fish farming to alleviate the detrimental impacts of A. veronii infection by enhancing the antioxidant/immune status of the infected fish. These outcomes could help reduce antibiotic usage in fish farms, which is conducive to the sustainable development of aquaculture. This study showed from the analysis of 180 droppings of the Grey Wagtail Motacilla cinerea harvested during a period of one year from the Babors Mountains (Bejaia, Algeria) that insects formed the main part of the diet (85.9% of identified items). The other food categories included arachnids, crustaceans and gastropods. Among the insects, Coleoptera (beetles) was the main order consisting of 37.4% of identified items. The most frequently recorded family was Baetidae (Ephemeroptera; 9.8%). At the prey-taxa level, an unidentified Baetidae was the most frequently encountered and represented 9.7% of the diet. This species was present in the diet throughout the year. Prey taxa classified as aquatic were more frequently encountered (54.2%) compared with those considered terrestrial. This study showed that seasonal fluctuations in the diet of Grey Wagtail were very weak. Prey size ranged from 0.2 to 30.5 mm, with an average of 8.9 mm. In this study, we evaluated ‘Crandon’ coarse root biomass and architecture grown at different topographic positions and fertilizer rates. Complete excavations were conducted on a subset of trees after the first growing season and showed that root biomass was strongly related to stem biomass (R2 = 0.93), but not topographic position or fertilizer rate. After the third growing season, subsamples of roots were collected from another subset of trees and showed coarse root architecture variables to be strongly related to several metrics of the tree and root size (R2 = 0.61 to 0.82), while also differing by topographic position. Equations relating root biomass to stem biomass were derived from both methodologies (complete excavation v. subsampling for architecture measurements), and comparison of the equations indicated no difference in slopes (p = 0.59) or intercepts (p = 0.90), although the subsampling approach had a weaker model fit. Our results suggest ‘Crandon’ roots (i) adhere to strong allometric relationships with stem biomass, (ii) alter their architecture within the constraints of this allometric relationship according to site conditions, and (iii) can be subsampled to estimate root biomass from root architecture parameters with similar accuracy (but less precision) compared to complete excavations. Phytostabilization aims to immobilize soil contaminants using higher plants. The accumulation of trace elements in Populus alba leaves was monitored for 12 years after a mine spill. Concentrations of As and Pb significantly decreased, while concentrations of Cd and Zn did not significantly over time. Soil concentrations extracted by CaCl2 were measured by ICP-OES and results of As and Pb were below the detection limit. Long-term biomonitoring of soil contamination using poplar leaves was proven to be better suited for the study of trace elements. Plants suitable for phytostabilization must also be able to survive and reproduce in contaminated soils. Concentrations of trace elements were also measured in P. alba fruiting catkins to determine the effect on its reproduction potential. Cadmium and Zn were found to accumulate in fruiting catkins, with the transfer coefficient for Cd significantly greater than Zn. It is possible for trace elements to translocate to seed, which presents a concern for seed germination, establishment and colonization. We conclude that white poplar is a suitable tree for long-term monitoring of soil contaminated with Cd and Zn, and for phytostabilization in riparian habitats, although some caution should be taken with the possible effects on the food web. An experimental trial was established in greenhouse with transgenic white poplars from an elite genotype (Populus alba L. cv “Villafranca”) expressing the bar gene for tolerance to Basta® herbicide. The steady-state level of bar mRNA was evaluated in different seasons, over a two-year period. Notwithstanding the presence of the 35SCaMV promoter, significant fluctuations in the amount of the bar transcript in relation to season and organ position were observed. The highest expression levels were reached in apical leaves in summer, while a consistent drop in transgene expression occurred at the onset of dormancy and in winter buds. A similar expression pattern was evidenced for the poUBI gene used as endogenous marker. The genetically modified poplars were tolerant to intense and repeated glufosinate ammonium treatments, maintaining an intact shoot sprouting and a good height increment. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Forests dominated by Salix neotricha, and Populus alba found along the mesoeutrophic rivers in the Iberian Peninsula, were studied. We discuss the floristic circumscription, chorology, and community segregation based on the available releves of all Iberian riparian communities included in Populenion albae. Eleven formerly described communities were analyzed and due to original floristic combination, habitat features, and biogeographic scope, a new willow and poplar forest type is proposed within a well-defined biogeographical unit (Sadensean-Dividing Portuguese Subprovince): Clematido campaniflorae-Salicetum neotrichae. This syntaxon is found under a semi-hyperoceanic thermomediterranean to lower mesomediterranean, subhumid to humid bioclimate. Cluster analysis including all Iberian communities of Populenion albae shows a clear floristic segregation within the suballiance and confirms the originality of the new association. Furthermore, chemical characteristics of the water along some of the Portuguese watercourses with Populenion albae were studied and compared to the oligotrophic rivers occupied by Osmundo-Alnion communities. This study suggests that floristic separation between the communities of Populenion and Osmundo-Alnion is accompanied by a differentiation of the water trophic level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the genes of theAux/IAA family were used as functional markers to characterise bud break stages in a white poplar clone. In the first experiment, under greenhouse conditions, the sprouting of repressed sylleptic buds was obtained by pruning the shoot tip during growing season. Buds were collected at 0, 6, 24 and 48 h after pruning for molecular analyses. A decrease in transcript level ofIAA4 andIAA8 genes was observed in the first and second bud below the cut after 6 and 24 h, respectively. In the second experiment, bud break of post-dormant proleptic buds was induced by forcing in climatic chamber. The first 6 and the following 6 buds below the apical one were sampled every 48 h during forcing. Anatomical studies were also carried out on buds and plants were equipped with stem and bud radial growth sensors to check their swelling. In both experiments, gene expression patterns showed a decrease and a successive increase in expression ofIAA4 andIAA8 genes during bud break. The transient down-regulation of these genes was observed only in buds that formed new branches. Thus, similar molecular mechanisms are involved in bud break of both sylleptic and proleptic buds. In this study, the phytoextraction capacity of a heavy metal tolerant white poplar clone, grown in the presence of high iron availability and/or mycorrhizas was evaluated. A large amount of iron in available form was determined in initial high concentrations in leaf, which declined along time and affected Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn accumulation. White poplar (Populus alba) is a widespread species of the northern hemisphere. Introgressed populations or hybrid zones with the related species of the European aspen (Populus tremula) have been suggested as potential venues for the identification of functionally important variation for germplasm conservation, restoration efforts and tree breeding. Data on the genetic diversity and structure of introgressed P. alba are available only for sympatric populations from central Europe. Here, clonality, introgression and spatial genetic patterns were evaluated in three riparian populations of P. alba along the Ticino, Paglia-Tevere and Cesano river drainages in Italy. Samples of all three populations were typed for five nuclear microsatellite markers and 137 polymorphic amplified fragment length polymorphisms. Microsatellite-based inbreeding co-efficients (FIS) were significantly positive in all three populations. Genetic diversity was consistently highest in Ticino, the population with the highest level of introgression from P. tremula. Population differentiation (FST) was low between the Ticino valley in northern Italy and the Cesano valley in central Italy and between the central Italian populations of Cesano and Paglia-Tevere, consistent with a role of the Appenine mountain range as a barrier to gene flow between adjacent drainage areas. The response to oxidative stress was investigated in suspension cultures of Populus alba L. “Villafranca” exposed to cadmium. Cell death was demonstrated by Evans Blue staining. Although DNA laddering was not detected, the nuclear morphology evaluated by DAPI revealed irregularly stained granular nuclei derived from chromatin condensation, a programmed cell death hallmark.
