Introduction: Volatile nitrites, such as amyl nitrite, are used recreationally to enhance sexual experience and provide a feeling of euphoria. They are associated with severe adverse reactions including methaemoglobinaemia and maculopathy. The aim of this study was to explore the epidemiology and clinical effects of volatile nitrite exposures reported to the Victorian Poisons Information Centre in Australia over a 10-year period. Methods: This was a retrospective, observational study of poison centre call records. Data were extracted for all exposures to volatile nitrites reported from 2013 to 2022. Results: There were 132 calls about volatile nitrites, representing 122 exposures, with a more than five-fold increase in the annual number of exposures (from five in 2013 to 26 in 2022). Ingestion (49.2%) and inhalation (27.9%) were the most common routes of exposure. Seventy-six (62.3%) patients reported one or more symptoms related to volatile nitrite exposure. The most common symptoms were light-headedness/dizziness (20.5%), oro-mucosal irritation (15.6%), ocular irritation (14.8%), nasal irritation (12.3%), and nausea/vomiting (9.8%). Less common, but potentially serious, adverse effects included methaemoglobinaemia (4.1%), hypoxia (1.6%) and hypotension (0.8%). Symptom severity was usually classified as minor (70/76, 92.1%) at the time of the poisons centre call. Fifty-four (44.3%) patients were either in the hospital when the poisons centre was contacted or were referred to the hospital by the poisons centre. Discussion: The increase in reported volatile nitrite exposures observed in this study aligns with epidemiological data showing an increase in volatile nitrite usage in Australia. The findings about the nature of exposures and symptoms experienced can be used to inform harm reduction and education efforts for community members and health professionals. Conclusions: Exposures to volatile nitrites reported to an Australian poisons centre increased between 2013 and 2022. More than 40% of exposures resulted in a hospital presentation. We sought to estimate the prevalence as well as demographic and drug use-related correlates of poppers use among adults in the United States. Data were analyzed from adult participants (ages 18-64) in the 2015-2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (N = 115,744), a nationally representative survey of non-institutionalized adults in the US. An estimated 3.3% of adults have ever used poppers. Over a third (35.1%) of gay men are estimated as having ever used poppers. Estimates were lower for heterosexual (3.7%) and bisexual males (11.3%), and for heterosexual (1.8%), bisexual (4.8%), and lesbian women (6.3%). In the multivariable model, compared to male heterosexuals, gay men were at increased odds for reporting lifetime popper use (aOR = 24.64, p<.001), and bisexual men (aOR = 3.55, p <.001), lesbian women (aOR = 1.86, p =.010), and bisexual women (aOR = 1.33, p =.049) were at increased odds for lifetime use. Having a college degree was associated with increased odds for use, and lifetime use of marijuana, ecstasy/MDMA/Molly, cocaine, LSD, methamphetamine, tranquilizers, and/or opioids were associated with higher odds for use. Poppers (nitrite inhalants) are legal, commonly used by men who have sex with men, and associated with HIV acquisition, yet research is lacking on popper use and associated adverse outcomes. People living with HIV (PLWH) in the U.S.-Mexico border region lead binational lives, including accessing care and having sex and drug use partners on both sides of the border, with broad personal and public health implications. Understanding popper use provides crucial information to guide policy and develop targeted interventions for binational PLWH. We examine prevalence and correlates of popper use among HIV-positive Latinos in the border region, an underserved population at risk for poor health outcomes. This cross-sectional study recruited a convenience sample from agencies in San Diego and Tijuana to complete quantitative surveys. Participants (N = 121) were primarily male (82.6%) and gay/bisexual (62%). Lifetime substance use (excluding cannabis) was reported by 72% of participants, and 25.6% reported lifetime popper use. Individuals recruited in the U.S. were significantly more likely to report use of poppers than were participants recruited in Mexico. Our regression model found that identifying as gay/bisexual and having bought, sold, or traded sex for money, drugs, or other goods were independently associated with popper use. Findings shed light on the profile of individuals who use poppers and lay the foundation for further research to understand the context of popper use as it relates to high-risk behavior among PLWH in this region of high transborder mobility. While men who have sex with men (MSM) in North America have commonly used alkyl nitrite “poppers,” related to the vasodilator amyl nitrite, in sexual contexts since at least the 1970s, they do not have a significant history of using solvent or propellant inhalants, known as “huffing.” This may be changing, with some solvents being marketed as a “new form of poppers.” Huffing solvents carries considerably more health risk than using alkyl nitrite poppers, but this may not be recognized by clinicians, who usually have little knowledge of either, or MSM, who do not have a cultural history of huffing. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence, patterns, and predictors of nitrite inhalant use in antisocial adolescents. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 723 Missouri youth (Mage = 15.5, SD = 1.2) in residential care for antisocial behavior. The lifetime prevalence of nitrite inhalant use was 1.7% (1.3% for boys; 4.3% for girls, p = .06), a figure somewhat higher than comparable estimates from the MTF and NSDUH national surveys. Most lifetime users reported nitrite use in the prior year (92%) and experienced intoxication (83%) during periods of nitrite inhalation. Nitrite users had significantly higher scores on measures of somatization, obsessive-compulsive traits, interpersonal sensitivity, impulsivity, fearlessness, suicidality, and polydrug use and were significantly more likely to have suffered a serious head injury and to be White than their non-nitrite-using counterparts. Nitrite users also reported significantly higher levels of current psychiatric distress related to periods of faintness or dizziness, hot or cold spells, difficulty making decisions, and their "mind going blank" than did non-nitrite users. Antisocial adolescent nitrite users are at substantially elevated risk for serious functional impairments given their high rates of lifetime head injury, comparatively more varied and intensive levels of involvement with psychoactive drugs, and symptom reports suggestive of psychiatric and cognitive dysfunction.
