The article explores the usage of Open Access Institutional Repositories in universities. The quantitative research approach and survey design were adopted, and simple random sampling and stratified sampling techniques were employed. A questionnaire was used as a research instrument to gather appropriate data for the study; descriptive and inferential statistics were used as statistical tools to analyze data. The study looked at the level of usage of Open Access Institutional Repositories, reasons for Open Access Institutional Repositories usage, and ways of enhancing usage of Open Access Institutional Repositories in universities. Although the level of Open Access Institutional Repositories usage was low, all the respondents were willing to use it (deposit in and download from Open Access Institutional Repositories). The article recommends strategies for the usage of Open Access Institutional Repositories in universities. This strategy consists of improvements in the user experience and user interfaces, archiving services, advocacy and marketing, Open Access Institutional Repositories policy, and automatic harvesting. Universities will be able to determine which factors affect the usage of such repositories in libraries and will be able to design strategies on how to sustain and manage them. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rapidly progressive fatal neurodegenerative disease affecting one in 350 people. The aim of Project MinE is to elucidate the pathophysiology of ALS through whole-genome sequencing at least 15,000 ALS patients and 7500 controls at 30× coverage. Here, we present the Project MinE data browser (), a unique and intuitive one-stop, open-access server that provides detailed information on genetic variation analyzed in a new and still growing set of 4366 ALS cases and 1832 matched controls. Through its visual components and interactive design, the browser specifically aims to be a resource to those without a biostatistics background and allow clinicians and preclinical researchers to integrate Project MinE data into their own research. The browser allows users to query a transcript and immediately access a unique combination of detailed (meta)data, annotations and association statistics that would otherwise require analytic expertise and visits to scattered resources. The purpose of this study is to examine the citation impact of open access (OA) and non-OA journals published in India in health and medical sciences journals and to explore whether OA journals received more citations than non-OA journals. An evaluative scientometric approach was used to analyze the citations of articles published in Indian health and medical science journals indexed in Scopus. Of the total 241 Indian health and medical science journals indexed in Scopus, 79 OA and 61 non-OA journals were selected for the study. Harzing's Publish or Perish software was used to extract the publication and citation data from Google Scholar for 2011–2016. Five alternate hypotheses were formulated to examine whether there is any difference between the impact of OA and non-OA journals. The results showed there is an obvious citation advantage for OA health and medical science journals compared with non-OA journals. However, The Mann-Whitney U Test analysis revealed no significant difference in the citations impacts of OA and non-OA journals, rejecting all the alternate hypotheses of the study. Since this study is the first to explore the citation impact of OA and non-OA journals in the subject of health and medical science published in India, it offers theoretical implication for examination of citation impact of OA and non-OA journals in other subjects. SHERPA’s most notable service is RoMEO, is a database aggregating publisher archiving policies which allows researchers quick access to copyright and self-archiving policies of more than 23,000 global publishers. In this article, I draw mainly on an analysis of my research experiences in science and higher education. My aim is to construct a conceptual argument that will help explain some of the evident complexity of the higher education field and inform future developments. I propose that the study of higher education is an open-access discipline with the prime purpose of providing a service for higher education itself. Such an argument acknowledges the diversity of people who contribute to this research and how the discipline is developed. To help explain these ideas, I borrow from the scientific concept of Ecosystem Services as a field theory for higher education that envisages a knowledge service for a unified project concerned with research that informs and enhances the complete range of services required of our higher education institutions. From 1994 to 2008, the University of Idaho Library published the Electronic Green Journal, a peer-reviewed, cross-disciplinary, open-access journal on environmental issues. In 2007 the editorial board decided to transition the journal into the Open Journal Systems open-source journal-management system. The new system had to be customized, back issues had to be imported, and the editorial board had to be trained on the new system. By describing the successes and setbacks encountered during this transition, this article provides practical information on both creating and maintaining an open-access journal using a journal-management system. India's wastelands have been classified as both over utilized and underutilized. Perplexingly, an apparent tragedy of the commons exists alongside extensive official management powers. In this paper, I argue that the complexity of governance structures may be inadvertently worsening the situation. Looking to recent work on contested property and the anticommons concept, I suggest that an anticommons amongst those officially controlling the lands is casting a long and unexpected shadow by encouraging the emergence of open-access de facto resource exploitation and discouraging de facto management. This extension of the anticommons concept implies that the effects of anticommons are not necessarily limited to under exploitation, as most commonly used in the developing anticommons literature. Objective. Upper gastrointestinal complaints are common in the general population. The aim of this study was to establish whether age and occurrence of alarm symptoms are predictors of malignancy in primary care open-access endoscopy. Material and methods. The material comprised 10,061 consecutive patients referred for gastroscopy by general practitioners from 1989 to 2000. The presenting symptoms were recorded; alarm symptoms comprised dysphagia, weight loss, gastrointestinal bleeding, anaemia and vomiting. Results. In all, 13.0% (1310) of the patients had alarm symptoms. Malignancy was detected in 0.7% (72 patients) in the whole series, in 0.3% (13 patients) aged 55 years or younger and in 1.1% (59 patients) over 55 years of age; the respective percentages in patients with alarm symptoms were 2.5% (33 patients), 1.0% (5 patients) and 3.4% (28 patients). Alarm symptoms (odds ratios 3.98; confidence interval 2.47-6.41), age (1.07/year; 1.05-1.09) and male gender (1.95; 1.22-3.12) were significantly associated with gastrointestinal malignancy. Conclusions. The total number of malignancies in the primary care open-access gastroscopy series was low. Alarm symptoms increased the risk 5-6-fold; such patients should therefore undergo endoscopy without delay. At a further one year of age the risk was increased by 7%, but no definite age limit for endoscopy could be asserted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is an overview of what libraries should consider for the representation of e-journals in their OPAC. There are four major issues to consider: (1) whether or not to include e-journals in the OPAC at all, (2) which type of display format should be used-a single cataloging record including all formats or separate cataloging records for each format, (3) how to link to e-journals in the OPAC, and (4) whether or not to include Open-Access journals or out-of-scope e-journal titles in the OPAC. The term ‘one-stop-shop’ has become absorbed into everyday language in Britain, used to describe a particular form of social organisation, but what exactly do we mean by ‘one-stop-shopping’ for family support? How does the concept fit within the context of mainstream service provision and can this model of multi-agency practice make a real difference in terms of the families it reaches and the quality of support it provides? This paper examines the Coram Community Campus, an innovative model of service provision for young children and families, located on a site in a multi-ethnic area of Inner London. The Campus was set up to provide a ‘one-stop-shop’ for local parents and their young children, bringing together onto one site a range of services which offer care, education, support and other facilities. The Campus has been evaluated during its first two years. The paper presents some of the findings of the research, drawing on case study material and interview based work with families who use the services, in order to shed light on the ways in which this model of multi-agency working is endeavouring to meet diverse family needs.
