1. A study was conducted to assess the possibility of totally replacing supplemental phosphorus sources in White Leghorn (WL) layer diets (aged 28 to 45 weeks of age) with microbial phytase supplementation. One thousand commercial layers (HyLine White) of 28 weeks of age were housed in California cages fitted in open-sided poultry shed at the rate of 20 layers in each replicate. Ten replicates were randomly allotted to each treatment, and the respective diet was fed from 28 to 45 weeks of age. 2. A control diet (CD) containing the recommended levels of non-phytate phosphorus (3.6 g/kg NPP) and four other test diets (2–5) having sub-optimal levels of NPP (2.4, 2.0, 1.6 and 1.2 g/kg), but with supplemental microbial phytase (600 FTU/kg) were prepared and fed for the trial duration. 3. The layers fed with lower levels of NPP with phytase had the same laying performance as the group fed the CD. Egg production, feed efficiency, egg mass, shell defects, egg density, shell weight, shell thickness, ash content and breaking strength of the tibia and sternum were not affected by feeding the lowest concentration of NPP (1.2 g/kg) plus microbial phytase. 4. Phytase supplementation in diets with sub-optimal levels of NPP (2.4, 2 and 1.6 g/kg) significantly improved the Haugh unit score compared to those fed the CD. 5. It was concluded that supplemental phosphorus can be completely replaced with microbial phytase (600 FTU/kg) in a diet without affecting egg production, shell quality or bone mineral variables in WL layers (28 to 45 weeks). 1. Keel bone damage, such as deformations and fractures, is a severe problem regarding animal welfare in layers. To identify risk factors under commercial conditions, 33 layer flocks (22 barn, 11 free range) with white (n = 18), brown (n = 11) and mixed (n = 4) genotypes were examined. 2. Keel bone status was frequently scored by palpation throughout the laying period. Data on housing and management conditions were collected. Multiple regression and Generalized Estimating Equations procedure were used for analysis. 3. At 65–74 weeks of age, the prevalence of keel bone damage ranged between 26% and 74%. White genotypes and those kept in multi-tier systems developed significantly (p < 0.05) more keel bone damage than brown genotypes or those kept in single-tier systems. Wing feather condition was associated with keel bone damage (p < 0.05), while other investigated variables regarding health, housing and management were not associated. 4. In conclusion, housing and management should be adapted to meet the birds' specific needs in multi-tier systems, which may vary for brown and white genotypes. 1. An experiment was conducted with White Leghorn layers (Babcock BV 300) to optimise the feed withdrawal schedule for egg-laying hens (67 to 80 weeks) reared in open-sided poultry houses during the tropical summer season. 2. Four feeding schedules (1. ad libitum access to the layer feed, 2. feed withdrawal from 9 AM-5 PM, 3. 11 AM-5 PM, and 4. 1 PM-5 PM followed by free access to the layer feed) were examined. Each feeding schedule was offered to 12 replicates consisting of 12 layers housed in four adjacent cages (45.7 × 35.6 × 43.2 cm). 3. Fasting the layers from 1-5 pm reduced egg production compared to layers fasting from 9 or 11 am. The FI/egg or unit egg mass was highest in layers fasted from 1-5 pm. In the 9 am-5 pm fasted group, the cloacal temperature (CT) increased significantly at 11 am and gradually reduced at 3 pm. In the 1-5 pm fasted group, the CT remained higher at 3 pm and 5 pm. 4. The cell-mediated immune response in layers fasted from 9 am or 11 am was higher than those fed ad libitum or 1-5 pm fasted group. Lipid peroxidation was higher in layers 1-5 pm fasted group, and significantly lower LP was found in groups that fasted from 9 am or 11 am. In general, the activities of serum antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, superoxide dismutase) were higher in layers that fasted from 9 am or 11 am compared to those that had ad libitum feed or fasted from 1-5 pm. 5. It was concluded that the feed withdrawal should be initiated during the forenoon (9 AM/11 am-5 pm) for optimum production and to reduce oxidative stress in egg-laying hens reared during summer in the tropical region. Scientists throughout the world are increasingly interested in developing novel technologies and materials as alternatives to antibiotics in the poultry industry. The researchers' efforts include not just substituting antibiotic growth promoters in poultry feeds, but also reducing the total overuse of veterinary antibiotics in the poultry industry in order to achieve organic products. Several approaches have been applied as antibiotic substitutes, including the use of beneficial bacteria or medicinal herbs. Recently, using probiotic sources in a daily supplement regimen has become a common routine in commercial poultry production. For many decades, yeast and its derivatives were regarded as one of the most important microorganisms used in animal feed. Yeasts are important in several ecological processes for instance the dissipation of energy and carbon and mineralisation of organic material through the soil ecosystem as well as are involved in parasitic, mutualistic, symbiotic, and competitive interactions with other microorganisms. The combination of nutritional metabolites in the yeast-derived product induces the birds' health via balancing the immune system while heightening nutrient digestibility and gut health. Owing to prohibitions on using antimicrobial growth promoters, yeast-based products are becoming alternative supplements in poultry feed due to their health and nutritional advantages. Recently, several studies have shown that the inclusion of yeast in layer chicken feeds enhanced nutrient utilisation and increased egg production and egg weight. 1. Moulting is a natural physiological process in birds when they shed their old feathers and replace them with new ones, and it is followed by reproductive quiescence resulting in reduced egg production. Different birds undergo moulting at different points in their life. Some birds have seasonal moulting while some moult at the end of their breeding cycle. This review will mainly focus on moulting practices associated with commercial layer birds because, in all other bird types, this is not managed. 2. Commercial farms commonly analyse the cost–benefit ratio to decide the time and method to adopt for moulting. Commercial layer farms adopt different practices to force birds out of moult and restart the production cycle. Animal welfare groups consider this as stressful and against animal welfare, raising questions about the ethics of this practice. 3. Many studies have been conducted using complete or partial feed withdrawal and non-feed withdrawal programs to measure their effectiveness in maintaining animal welfare, economy, and post-moult performance in mind. 4. Animal welfare should not be compromised during moulting. The United States Egg Producers and other such groups from the United Kingdom and Europe have decided to sell eggs produced only through a non-feed withdrawal moulting programs. Many cities are centers of trade, or crossroads of cultures, or seats of power with histories of conflicts between the many and the few. Many cities are influenced or defined by their proximity to distinct waterways and harbors. And many cities are defined by distinct architectural structures and monuments that symbolize the city. Istanbul has all of these, but each is layered, each contains counter-currents. The essence of Istanbul (as the cultural capital of Turkey) does all of this and more. First, it stands alone in its unique geographic and political setting: balancing east and west (Europe and Asia – including Iran) and north and south (Russia, via the Black Sea and the Middle East),;tradition and modernity. Istanbul has often been characterized by use of the metaphor of a 'veil,' a city, like many of its people, hidden and mysterious. Like many ancient cities, its archeological layers hide or reveal its complicated past. Strolling among the neighborhoods of the older city, on both sides of the Bosphorus, reveals layered juxtapositions of hyper modernity and genuine and also reactive tradition. The focus of the current political regime on rooting out widespread political conspiracies by repressing dissent is only the most recent example of an attempt to 're-found' the state on an imagined community of Turks, and re-embracing the use of the veil. The Bosphorus strait provides the best example of layers and counter-currents. The 30 km long strait, notoriously difficult to navigate, is highly unusual: it features a colder surface current, flowing south from the freshwater Black Sea, and a warmer saltier (and heavier) 'counter current,' flowing the opposite direction underneath. This natural feature which unites the city is layered and divided – it is an embodiment of the layers and countercurrents of the contemporary city of Istanbul. 1. Within a triennial project, 34 layer flocks with untrimmed beaks were examined regularly throughout the laying period to broaden knowledge on the occurrence and development of severe feather pecking and cannibalism, as well as on factors influencing this non-desirable behaviour. 2. Flocks involved 850 to 27,183 hens of seven different genetics, kept in a barn or on free-range systems. Damage to the plumage and skin was assessed in individual hens during each visit and their body weights recorded. Correlations smaller than 0.8 between different body areas for damage indicated the necessity to consider them separately. Accounting for the risk of bias due to unevenly distributed factors, regression functions were used to assess associations between pecking damage, losses and performance, housing and management conditions. In addition, temporal pattern of pecking damage for flocks with severe, medium and little damage was modelled using these functions. 3. As expected, plumage damage increased with age, whereas the development of skin lesions was less consistent. From 30 weeks of age, pecking damage on the back increased remarkably in flocks with the most severe scores compared to those with medium and little damage, especially during the later laying period. Associations were found between pecking damage on the back of hens with plumage quality of pullets when entering the layer house (point of lay). Damage to the vent/cloacal region was more pronounced in white compared to brown layers. However, this did not deny the importance of factors not significant in this study. 4. 1. The apparent ileal calcium (Ca) digestibility coefficients of two limestone sources in growing broilers and layers were determined in two separate experiments. 2. In each experiment, two maize-based diets were developed with two limestone sources (A, experiment 1 and B, experiment 2) to contain either 8.0 g/kg Ca for broilers or 40 g/kg Ca for layers. The two sources differed in particle size, with limestone A being finer and limestone B being coarser. Each experimental diet was randomly allotted to six replicate cages and offered for 3 days from 19 to 21-day post-hatch to broilers and during 40 weeks of age to layers. The total tract Ca retention was also measured using the indicator ratios in the diet and excreta. 3. In both experiments, the apparent ileal Ca digestibility, gizzard pH and gizzard Ca concentration were higher (P < 0.05) in layers than in broilers. The apparent ileal digestibility coefficient of limestone A for broilers and layers was 0.50 and 0.62, respectively. The corresponding values for limestone B were 0.43 and 0.70, respectively. The apparent total tract retention of Ca was similar (P > 0.05) between broilers and layers in both experiments, and between the two sources. 4. 1. This study examined the expression of genes related to appetite-regulating neuropeptides in the hypothalamus of broiler and layer chicks (Gallus gallus) after intraperitoneal (IP) injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). 2. Both broiler and layer chicks received (n = 10 per group) LPS at doses of 0 and 200 µg and feed intake was measured up to 6 h after injection. In a further experiment, (n = 8 per group) mRNA abundance of some hypothalamic neuropeptides was measured 2 h after injection. The rectal temperature of each chick was measured before and 2 h post-injection. 3. Feed intake was significantly decreased by LPS from 2 h after injection and thereafter, while the rectal temperature did not change. 4. LPS decreased the expression of appetite-enhancing neuropeptides: neuropeptide Y (NPY) and agouti-related peptide (AgRP) in broilers and, NPY in layer chicks. The expression of appetite-suppressing neuropeptides (corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF), proopiomelanocortin (POMC) and, cocaine and amphetamine regulated-transcript (CART) was not changed in broilers, while CRF tended to decrease and POMC was significantly decreased in layers. The abundance of the cytokine tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) did not change in broilers but was decreased in layers. 5. The findings indicated that the reduction in gene expression of hypothalamic appetite-enhancing neuropeptides NPY and AgRP is responsible for anorexia caused by LPS at a dose that did not influence body temperature. At the centre of this article is iNakba, a digital navigational application created by a Tel Aviv-based NGO in 2014. The app superimposes a layer of ruined Palestinian localities destroyed following the 1948 war, on top of the established and hegemonic Israeli geographical representation. At the end of this war and with the formation of the State of Israel, the presence of these localities was eradicated from both the territory and Israeli maps. The iNakba app uses Google maps and Waze as platforms for allowing users to find these localities and navigate towards them in order to increase knowledge about the repressed geographical past of the territory and bring about a political change. By examining iNakba from a media practice perspective, and by comparing it to a printed map published almost seven decades earlier and in very different circumstances, we highlight the unique role of layers in constructing and deconstructing cartographical knowledge. Layers, we argue, allow new potentialities for the representation and imagination of space, specifically, problematizing the eradication of Palestinian localities from the map and suggesting to re-imagine the territory as comprising the two histories and the two peoples. The effect of flaxseed meal or mixture with rapeseed meal or rice bran on the performance and nutritional quality of the eggs was investigated in a 6-week feeding trial on 120, Tetra SL layers (38 weeks). The hens, 4 groups (30 hens/group; 2 birds/cage) were feed with a basal diet (C); flaxseed meal (5%; E1); flaxseed meal-rapeseed meal (2.5%; 10%; E2) and flaxseed meal-rice bran (2.5%; 10%; E3). At the end of the trial, 18 eggs/group were collected to determine the egg quality and were assayed for the nutritional parameters. The results showed that the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content was higher in groups E2 (28.65%) and E3 (29.62%). The index of atherogenicity (AI) decreased significantly (P<0.05) in group E2 (0.53) compared with C group (0.57), while the index of hypercholesterolemic fatty acid registered a higher value (2.69) vs. control group (2.45). In conclusion, use of the dietary flaxseed meal or mixture with rapeseed meal or rice bran had beneficial effects on egg nutritional quality, regarding the decrease in significant SFA content as well as the ΣSFA/ΣUFA ratio and the PUFA ω6:ω3 ratio. In Kuwait, per capita consumption of poultry meat was 64.4 kg/cap/yr from 2004 to 2016. This indicates the high demand for poultry meat in Kuwait, which cannot be met by local production alone. The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) has conducted poultry research projects into high-quality and added-value poultry products, which could be utilised to enhance competitiveness in Kuwait production systems. Their scientific achievements include developing broiler and layer feed rations, improving FCR of broilers from 2.0 to 1.4, production of high-quality broilers, strict biosecurity measures on farm and enhanced diversity of poultry products, such as meat and eggs from Arabi chickens, quail and ducks. However, more work is needed in the areas of poultry feed and added-value product technology. In addition, technology transfer of KISR Intellectual property (IP) and knowledge to the poultry industry is necessary. The goal of this paper was to show the major achievements of KISR poultry research; identify gaps and propose solutions to improve production and enhance local industry competitiveness, in addition to conservation of the endangered avian species: Falcons and Houbara. In order to meet the high demand for eggs, poultry producers are using certain feed strategies, which can increase production, but may indirectly cause metabolic and other stress in the birds. To overcome these issues, natural plant extracts and ingredients, such as turmeric, can be added to the diet. The inclusion of turmeric, which has various beneficial properties, at levels of 0.75% and 1% in the diets can improve feed intake and significantly reduce cholesterol in broilers. Cholesterol in eggs has been shown to decrease by 16, 24 and 25% (P<0.05) when layers were fed 1, 2 and 4% turmeric in feed, respectively. Birds fed a high carbohydrate ration and supplemented with turmeric powder for 30 days prior to sexual maturity had 20% more egg production as compared to a control group. Lactobacillus spp. counts were significantly higher (P<0.01) in chickens fed 1% turmeric supplemented feed compared to unsupplemented birds. Hence, this review includes the effect of feeding turmeric on feed intake, feed conversion ratio, nutrient digestibility, biochemical parameters, egg production, egg qualities, intestinal morphology, gut bacteria and the genetic expression of toll-like receptors. To protect layers, breeders and grandparents against damage by infectious bronchitis virus infections during the laying period, vaccination using live priming followed by a boost with inactivated IB vaccine is commonly used. For many IB variants, homologous live vaccines are not available for priming. Very little is known about the efficacy of priming with heterologous live IB vaccines (or combination of live IB vaccines) to induce broad IB protection in long-living chickens. In this study, the protection levels induced by vaccination programmes with only heterologous live priming by a Massachusetts vaccine and a 4/91 vaccine, only a multivalent inactivated vaccine that contained D1466 antigen and a combination of both, against a D1466 challenge were compared. The infection with infectious bronchitis virus D1466, a genotype II, lineage 1 virus, was able to cause serious damage to the unvaccinated laying hens resulting in respiratory signs, a long-lasting drop in egg production and loss of egg quality. All three vaccination programmes induced significant levels of protection against challenge with a pathogenic D1466 strain. Overall, the vaccination programme using the broad heterologous live priming and the inactivated vaccine provided high protection against the combination of egg drop and loss of egg quality. The results showed that this combination of heterologous live vaccines was able to increase the efficacy of the inactivated infectious bronchitis virus vaccine despite the very low antigenic relationship of both live vaccines with the challenge strain. 1. The consumption of adequate amounts of the long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 LC-PUFA) has been associated with beneficial effects on human health. Eggs are commonly consumed worldwide, and their omega-3 content can be easily altered by changing the diets of laying hens and so represent an important target for enrichment. 2. In this study, the effect of supplementing laying hens with DHA-rich, Aurantiochytrium limacinum at three different inclusion levels was investigated over a 24-week period. 3. Significant increases in egg DHA concentrations were observed after four weeks and were maintained for the duration of the 24-week study. The supplemented eggs in the current study had a DHA content of 82, 101, and 129 mg/yolk when supplemented with 0.25%, 0.5% and 1% treatments, respectively, which meets the EU criteria to be considered 'high in omega-3ʹ. 4. Using the sustainably grown protist Aurantiochytrium limacinum to supplement layer diets increased the egg DHA concentration and decreased the n-6/n-3 ratio, improving the nutritional value of the eggs for human consumers. Infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) is an acute respiratory disease of chickens controlled through vaccination with live-modified attenuated vaccines, the chicken embryo origin (CEO) vaccines and the tissue-culture origin (TCO) vaccines. Recently, novel recombinant vaccines have been developed using herpesvirus of turkey (HVT) and fowl pox virus (FPV) as vectors to express ILTV immunogens for protection against ILT. The objective of this study was to assess the protection efficacy against ILT induced by recombinants, live-modified attenuated, and inactivated virus vaccines when administered alone or in combination. Commercial layer pullets were vaccinated with one or more vaccines and challenged at 35 (35 WCH) or 74 weeks of age (74 WCH). Protection was assessed by scoring clinical signs; and by determining the challenge viral load in the trachea at five days post-challenge. The FPV-LT vaccinated birds were not protected when challenged at 35 weeks; the HVT-LT and TCO vaccines in combination provided protection similar to that observed in chickens vaccinated with either HVT-LT or TCO vaccines when challenged at 35 weeks, whereas protection induced by vaccination with HVT-LT followed by TCO was superior in the 74 WCH group compared with the 35 WCH group. Birds given the inactivated ILT vaccine had fewer clinical signs and/or lower viral replication at 74 WCH when combined with TCO or HVT-LT, but not when given alone. Finally, the CEO-vaccinated birds had top protection as indicated by reduction of clinical signs and viral replication when challenged at 35 weeks (74 weeks not done). Feed cost is a major impediment to commercial poultry production in the South Pacific region because traditional feed ingredients (grains and oilseeds) are not grown in the region and imported at high price. As a result, meat has to be imported, which in Fiji increased by 69% between 2010 and 2011 (Diarra, 2017). Samoa was valued at about US$ 17 million or 87% of total cost of meat import in the country in 2012 and 2013. Several ingredients, which are available locally, could be included to reduce feed cost in the region. By-products of root/tuber harvest (peels and leaves), low value crops, fruits and by-products (peels and pulps), oil cakes (copra and palm kernel), by-products from the brewery, livestock/poultry slaughter, hatchery and fish processing and insect meal are readily available in most countries of the region. With adequate processing and correct diet formulation, these materials could replace reasonable proportions of the conventional energy and protein ingredients and reduce feed cost. Several factors including the type and source of material, processing method, diet composition, species, age and class of poultry affect the dietary recommendations of alternative ingredients. Currently however, the use of these resources in feed production in the region is limited due to lack of processing and analytical facilities, likely presence of antinutritional substances and poor knowledge on their nutritive value. Continued research into processing technology, regular training for farmers and extension staff and establishment of community owned feed processing units for optimum utilisation of locally available resources will benefits the poultry industry in the region. An outbreak of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) subtype H6N1 (intravenous pathogenicity index = 0.11) infection occurred in four productive brown layer flocks on three farms in the Netherlands within a period of two months. The farms were located at a maximum distance of 4.6 km from each other. The infections were associated with egg production drops up to 74%, pale eggshells and persisting high mortality up to 3.2% per week. Three flocks were slaughtered prematurely as they were not profitable anymore. Newcastle disease, infectious bronchitis, egg drop syndrome and Mycoplasma gallisepticum infections could very likely be excluded as cause of or contributor to the condition in the field. Also, the anticoccidial drug nicarbazin, which can cause egg production drops and eggshell decolouration, was not detected in eggs from affected flocks. Furthermore, post mortem examinations revealed no lesions indicative of bacterial infection. Moreover, bacteriological analysis of hens was negative. The condition was reproduced in commercial brown layers after intratracheal inoculation with virus isolates from affected flocks. It is concluded that the LPAI H6N1 virus is very likely the only cause of the disease. An overview of main manuscripts published since 1976 describing non-H5 and non-H7 avian influenza (AI) virus infections in chickens and their biological significance is included in the present study, in which once more is shown that not only high pathogenic AI virus subtypes H5 and H7 can be detrimental to flocks of productive layers, but also non-H5 and non-H7 LPAI viruses (H6N1 virus). 1. An experiment was conducted to determine optimal non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) concentrations for White Leghorn (WL) layers (22-72 weeks) fed diet containing 38 g Ca/kg. 2. Eight diets with graded concentrations (1.5-3.25 g/kg in increments of 0.25 g) of NPP were prepared. Each diet was fed to eight pen replicates containing 88 birds in each. Performance data was evaluated in three different phases (phase I-22-37 weeks, phase II-38-53 weeks and phase III-54-72 weeks). Optimum levels of NPP were determined by fitting a quadratic polynomial (QP) regression model. 3. Egg production (EP) was not affected (P = 0.059) by the concentration of NPP and interaction between NPP and diet phase was non-significant, indicating that the lowest concentration (1.5 g/kg diet) of NPP used in the study was adequate across the three phases. However, EP was influenced by phase (P < 0.001). 4. Optimum concentration of NPP for feed intake (FI) was estimated to be 1.5, 1.71 and 2.40 g/kg diet during phases I, II and III, respectively. FI per egg mass (EM) or feed efficiency (FE) responded quadratically with NPP and also differed significantly between phases. Optimum concentration of NPP for FE during phases I, II and III was 1.5, 2.56 and 2.32 g/kg diet, respectively. 5. Egg weight (EW), EM, shell weight and thickness were not affected by NPP concentration although all of these variables (except shell weight) were influenced by phases. 6. Breaking strength of tibia and Ca contents in tibia ash were not affected by the concentration of NPP, but bone ash and P contents in tibia ash were influenced (P < 0.001) by NPP. Predicted optimal concentrations of NPP for responses for tibia ash at 44 or 72 weeks, tibia ash P at 44 weeks and tibia ash P at 72 weeks were 1.55, 2.63 and 1.5 g/kg diet, respectively. 7. Based on the results, it was concluded that WL layers required 1.5 g, 2.63 g and 2.4 g, respectively/kg diet during phase I, II and III with the calculated daily intake of 137.3, 278.3 and 262 mg NPP/b/d. Serum lipid profile, hormones and liver enzymes were studied to determine the health status in moulted layers supplemented with protein, probiotics and symbiotics. Four equal groups (n = 50 each) as control (CONT; CP16% diet), high protein (HP; CP18% diet), symbiotic (SYM; CP16% diet, symbiotic @ 85 mg/L orally) and probiotic (PRO; CP16% diet, probiotic @ 85 mg/L orally) were studied. Fifteen birds were slaughtered at 5%, peak and end of post-moult production periods from each group to collect blood. A two-factorial completely randomized design along with the DMR test was applied. The serum was analysed to determine various parameters by commercially available kits. The LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C; mg/dL) and cortisol (µg/dL) concentration in HP, SYM and PRO and thyroxin (T4; µg/dL) in PRO and SYM were significantly reduced as compared to CONT. Triiodothyronine (T3; ng/mL) concentration in HP, SYM, PRO; HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C; mg/dL) in HP and AST (U/L) concentration in PRO were significantly increased (P ≤ .05) as compared to CONT. The decrease (P ≤ .01) in LDL-C and cortisol levels and increase in HDL-C level indicate the reducing effect of these supplementations on stress, whereas an increase in T3 in supplemented birds (HP and PRO) signifies its metabolic boosting impact in post-moult laying hens. The scanning circular rotating motion of the electron beam is used for embedding unclad TiCN nanoparticles in the aluminum matrix. The most appropriate treatment conditions for obtaining layers with significant thickness and high microhardness are reported. Layers with thickness 14-33 µm and microhardness 562-798 kg/mm2, which is 16-22 times higher than the substrate microhardness, are obtained. Possible strengthening mechanisms of the layers are discussed. The layers, chemical, and phase compositions are investigated by EDX detector of SEM and XRD. The complex investigation is completed with TEM analysis. Incorporated TiCN nanoparticles are observed in the aluminum matrix. Pododermatitis has been observed in several layer flocks in Denmark during 2015. The aetiology is complex, including litter quality, nutrition and management. Bacterial pathogens associated with pododermatitis, however, have not received much attention. The aim of the present study was, therefore, to identify 106 bacterial isolates obtained from pododermatitis in table egg layers in addition to five isolates from spleen/bursa presternalis. Isolates were obtained from layers from six affected flocks. All isolates were identified by standard bacterial methods, species-specific PCRs, 16S rRNA sequencing or matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization identification. Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis made up 75/111 (68%) and 15/111 (14%) of the isolates from pododermatitis, respectively; the remaining isolates represented Escherichia coli (10), Staphylococcus hyicus (5), Gallibacterium anatis (3), Trueperella pyogenes (2) and Aerococcus urinaeequi (1). All isolates of S. aureus were spa-typed. Spa-type t8646 and t002 made up 72% and 26% of the S. aureus isolates, respectively. The same types were also demonstrated from spleen/bursa presternalis. The same or closely related spa-types were found among 6/11 sepsis-affected day-old chicks included for comparison, indicating that these types of S. aureus are ubiquitous pathogens in poultry. In contrast, isolates of E. faecalis and E. coli showed major population diversity. In conclusion, the results suggest that S. aureus is a major pathogen associated with pododermatitis abscesses, which could be from a common source, whereas the diversity among the E. faecalis and E. coli populations suggests that these bacteria might originate from multiple sources. Globally, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica is one of the most commonly reported causes of foodborne illness in humans. Contaminated food products of animal origin, particularly egg and egg products are frequently implicated in outbreaks of human salmonellosis. Salmonella enteritidis is frequently involved in egg and egg products-associated foodborne outbreaks in the USA and UK. However, in Australia and New Zealand, human infections caused by this serovar occur as a result of infection acquired while overseas travel, with Salmonella typhimurium being a predominant cause of local foodborne outbreaks. In this paper, an overview of Salmonella epidemiology on laying farms, egg-related Salmonella outbreaks in humans, and regulatory practises to control Salmonella across USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand is provided. Considering the estimated production of eggs in the USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand in 2015, the risk of foodborne illness in general is quite low for humans consuming eggs. Salmonella diagnostics, reporting and surveillance systems have improved over the years and will continue to improve in the years to come. In this paper, a 2D orthogonal cutting of hardened AISI52100 steel is developed to investigate the influence of cutting process parameters (CPP) on white layer (WL) thickness. A finite element model (FEM) based on the phase transformation mechanism and takes into account the mechanical effects is adopted to predict the WL depth. Several numerical simulations are performed in various conditions of tool geometry, tool flank wear, material properties, and cutting conditions. The predicted results of cutting forces, chip morphologies, and WL depth are physically consistent with the previous experimental investigations. The numerical results prove that formation of thick WLs is unavoidable in all cases, except for low workpiece hardness, very thin WLs are noticed. The results also confirm that the WL thickness depends on all used CPP. In particular, the cutting speed, feed, tool flank wear, and workpiece hardness are the most influencing parameters. In the present paper we prove that a group is locally graded minimal non-((PF)L∪(픓픉)프) if, and only if, it is non-perfect minimal non-FC, where (픓픉)프 denotes the class of (polycyclic-by-finite)-by-abelian groups. We prove also that a group of infinite rank whose proper subgroups of infinite rank are in ((PF)L∪(픓픉)프) is itself in ((PF)L∪(픓픉)프) provided that it is locally (soluble-by-finite) without simple homomorphic images of infinite rank. We study stratified shear flow instability where the density profile takes the form of a staircase of interfaces separating uniform layers. Internal gravity waves riding on density interfaces can resonantly interact due to a background shear flow, resulting in the Taylor- Caulfield instability. The many steps of the density profile permit a multitude of interactions between different interfaces, and a rich variety of Taylor-Caulfield instabilities.We analyse the linear instability of a staircase with piecewise-constant density profile embedded in a background linear shear flow, locating all the unstable modes and identifying the strongest. The interaction between nearestneighbour interfaces leads to the most unstable modes. The nonlinear dynamics of the instabilities are explored in the long-wavelength, weakly stratified limit (the defect approximation). Unstable modes on adjacent interfaces saturate by rolling up the intervening layer into a distinctive billow. These nonlinear structures coexist when stacked vertically and are bordered by the sharp density gradients that are the remnants of the steps of the original staircase. The population of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region was 432 million in 2007 and it is estimated that in 2050 this figure will rise to 692 million inhabitants. The poultry industry in the MENA region depends heavily on imported soybeans and soybean meals. About 8.5 million metric tons of soybean meal (SBM) are needed for the production of poultry meat and eggs every year, based on the production of about 8.2 million tons of poultry meat and 3.7 million tons of eggs. Poultry feed prices are consistently increasing because of dependence on imported soybean meal. Hence, it is essential to find sustainable alternative protein sources. Several countries in the region produce sizeable amounts of oil seed meals that can partially or fully replace soybean meal in poultry rations. Nearly 5 million tons of cottonseed meal (CSM), peanut meal, sesame meal, sunflower meal and rapeseed meal are produced yearly in this region. The neighbouring countries of India, Pakistan and Sudan produce over 36 million tons of these meals. This study focused on these five meals in relation to amounts produced, quality and possible levels of use in various poultry rations. Data will be presented on availability, constraints of these meals as replacements for SBM, economic feasibility, and methods of improvement for possible utilisation at higher levels. Oil seed meal digestibility, quality, naturally occurring toxins, antimetabolites, mycotoxins, nutrient imbalances, and prices play a major role in determining the use of these meals for the production of poultry meat and eggs. AutogenousEscherichia colivaccines to prevent theE. coliperitonitis syndrome (EPS) in laying hens are often used in the field, although their effectiveness has not been demonstrated yet. Therefore, in this study, which consisted of two experiments, their efficacy was assessed. In the first experiment, the EPS-inducing ability of threeE. coliisolates originating from bone marrow of hens that died due to EPS and with different Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis patterns, was examined by intravenous inoculation of the isolates in 17-week-old brown layers. Based on the results one isolate was chosen for the preparation of the vaccines and for homologous challenge and another one for heterologous challenge performed in the second experiment. In the named experiment, groups of laying hens which had been vaccinated intramuscularly at 14 and 18 weeks of age with inactivated vaccine either formulated as aqueous suspension or as water-in-oil emulsion were homologously or heterologously challenged per aerosol at 30 weeks of age. The vaccines contained ≥108.2formaldehyde-inactivated colony-forming units (cfu) ofE. coliper hen dose in 0.5 ml. The estimatedE. colichallenge dose uptake ranged from 105.8to 106.5 cfu per hen. Groups consisted of 18 hens each and were housed in separate isolators from 27 weeks of age. Control groups were included in this experiment, which was ended eight days after challenge. Vaccinations had no effect on body growth and both vaccine types induced (almost) complete protection against homologous challenge, while protection against heterologous challenge was inconclusive. An experiment was conducted to compare the natural resistance of an indigenous breed of local village chickens toSalmonella gallinarumwith two commercial breeds: ISA Brown and ISA White layers under experimental conditions. 2. A total of 72 chickens from each of these breeds were randomly distributed to 4 pens to provide equal numbers of two replicate pens maintained as infected and control (uninfected). All chickens in infected groups were inoculated orally with 1 × 108CFU (1 ml dose) of a field isolate ofS.gallinarum, at the age of 8 and 16 weeks given over 5 consecutive days. Growth performance, clinical signs, gross pathological lesions and antibody responses were measured. 3. A significantly higher mortality was observed in the brown layers compared with the white layers, and clinical signs and mortality were absent in village chickens. However, a large number of birds with gross lesions and high antibody titres were detected in village chickens, indicating that birds had the disease subclinically. Commercial breeds had a significantly higher body weight, feed intake and feed conversion efficiency. 4. There was a significantly lower proportion of positive reactors in village chickens in the whole-blood agglutination test (35%) compared to brown (100%) and white (90%) layers even after the second inoculation. A longitudinal survey was conducted to investigate the presence ofBrachyspiraspecies in layer flocks. A total of 66 layer flocks kept in alternative husbandry systems were sampled at three time points: end of rearing, at peak of lay and at end of lay. Content from caecal samples of freshly killed birds was cultured at each sampling time point and processed for further investigations. Gross pathological lesions in caeca were recorded during post mortem investigation. Spirochaetes were isolated from 50 flocks: three flocks were positive at all three sampling points, 25 flocks at two and 22 flocks at one sampling point, respectively. The presence ofBrachyspiraspp. could not be related to specific gross pathological caecal lesions or antibiotic treatments. The number of positive flocks increased with the age of birds. Furthermore, organic flocks were more often positive than flocks from barn systems. In total 80 spirochaetal cultures were obtained.B. intermedia(43.8%) was the most common species, followed byB. pulli(13.8%) andB. pilosicoli(12.5%).Brachyspira murdochiiandB. innocenswere found in 5.0% and 2.5%, respectively, whereas 11.3% ofBrachyspiraisolates could not be identified to species level. The number of newly infected birds attributable to one infectious bird per day (= transmission rateβ) was assessed in non-vaccinated and MS-H-vaccinated experimental specified pathogen-free White Leghorns afterMycoplasma synoviaechallenge. Furthermore, the effect of vaccination on the shedding of the challenge strain was determined. Coligranulomatosis (Hjärre and Wramby’s disease) is considered to be a disease of chickens, turkeys and partridges that occurs sporadically in individual, adult birds. Therefore, the condition is not of economic importance, but is of interest due to the similarity of its lesions to those of tuberculosis. In a number of cases the disease could be reproduced by inoculation via artificial routes of granuloma homogenate orEscherichia colibacteria isolated from the lesions. Oral inoculations always failed. Occasionally, also serious outbreaks of granuloma disease have been reported in chickens, turkeys and quails.E. colibacteria were either not isolated or isolated, but the disease could not be reproduced with the isolates, which means that the essence of Koch’s postulates was not fulfilled. Also other evidence of causality was not presented. Therefore, these disease cases might have been wrongly diagnosed as coligranulomatosis. Instead they may have been caused byTetratrichomonas gallinarum, a parasite, which has the ability to induce severe granulomatosis in chicken flocks as has been shown recently. It is concluded that whenever severe granuloma disease is observed in poultry flocks at a large scale and is thus economically relevant,T. gallinarumshould be included and rank high in the list of differential diagnoses. This paper presents an alternative approach to obtaining crack- and pore-free NiCrBSiFeCuMoC hard coatings on a low alloy steel substrate through coaxial laser cladding, by using Inconel 718 as a buffer layer between the hard coating and the base material. The presence of the buffer layer reduces the overall cracking susceptibility of the hardfacing material by reducing the compressive stresses developed during the cladding process and ensuring a more uniform heat distribution gradient at the surface of the material than the base metal alone, which provides an additional hardness and wear coefficient increase of 7% and improves the corrosion resistance of the obtained materials by 20%, in comparison with the reference sample obtained without an intermediate layer, by using the same operational parameters and minimizes elemental dilution with the substrate. Our method could prove useful in increasing the quality and life cycle of expensive high-performance hard-coated materials, especially those working under demanding operational and environmental conditions. Campylobacter hepaticus was recently identified as the aetiological agent of Spotty Liver Disease (SLD). SLD causes significant health and productivity losses in the Australian egg industry and the disease is present in other countries. Following the isolation and characterization of C. hepaticus, molecular tools and refined culturing methods have been developed to identify the pathogen. It is suspected that the application of these tools will lead to identification of the pathogen in many poultry production systems throughout the world. As C. hepaticus has only recently been identified, little is known about the mechanisms of pathogenesis and, hence, new research needs to be directed towards understanding SLD epidemiology and C. hepaticus virulence mechanisms to inform efforts to develop intervention strategies. Based upon its economical perspective, the phenomenon of forced moulting in the poultry industry has become a common practice to increase the productivity and reproductive life span of birds. Different feed supplements, including vitamins, minerals, probiotics and prebiotics have been extensively used by poultry farmers for many years. In the last decade, researchers have reported advantageous effects of these supplements in improving different health biomarkers of post moult poultry birds. Therefore, including with these supplements in post moult feed is believed to exhibit better results than moulting alone. The current review is aimed at highlighting the empirical data available on the importance of various feed supplements that are considered favourable in ameliorating the health status of moulted poultry birds. We report the electropolymerization of five 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) monomers containing different aromatic groups (phenyl, diphenyl, biphenyl, naphthalene, and pyrene). While with phenyl, diphenyl, biphenyl, and naphthalene the polymerization occurs on the EDOT moiety, with pyrene both the EDOT and the pyrene moieties polymerize. Their electrodeposition gives rise to different surface structures with parahydrophobic properties (water apparent contact angle θ > θY, where θYcorresponds to the Young angle of the smooth surface of the same materials). The highest properties are obtained with PEDOT-BiPh (θ = 134.6° and extremely high water adhesion). Online multi-user platforms like World of Warcraft and Twitter have one common regulatory mechanism; the End-User License Agreement (EULA). This document forms the cornerstone of the regulatory system within each of these spaces. Yet it is regularly contravened by users and providers alike. These agreements are very often the only forms of control or regulation that are present in online environments and therefore control more than user behaviour. Yet these platforms also share another feature: virtual disputes, but these are no longer confined online. Threats of violence and other criminal offences arise too, with examples including the abuse issued to Criado-Perez, and more recently, Flipovic. Criado-Perez suffered Twitter abuse and Flipovic was victimised on online message boards. Cyberspace was once deemed to be free from governmental control but the increasing disputes suggest there is now a need to consider how users of spaces such as online games, virtual worlds and social media are protected. Is it fair and practical to leave regulation to EULAs? How do users achieve redress for wrongs – through online and in-site governance mechanisms or wider controls? This work will consider some of these issues, and will suggest that there is now a need for additional layers of regulation to fill the ‘responsibility gap’ left between EULAs and the offline legal mechanisms. The housing and management of laying hens and their productivity has gone through enormous developments in the last century. Housing has changed from free-range systems, via battery cages to a variety of loose housing and different types of battery cages, and back to outdoor access systems. Although battery cages are still the main system used worldwide, the number of hens housed in aviaries and free-range systems has increased in Europe, Australasia and some parts of the USA, but aviaries and free-range systems are still considered a niche sector compared to caged housing. The following paper reviews how breeding and selection have responded to changes in housing and management and whether different types of housing require different breeding programmes and, more specifically, whether a dedicated breeding programme should be developed for aviary and free-range systems.From the available literature it was concluded that broadening the selection goal in existing lines is the best option for breeding programmes to provide genotypes that are suitable for a range of housing systems. Experiments are conducted to deposit SS304 L powders on SS316 plates by plasma transfer arc welding process with varying four input process parameters, namely scanning speed, powder feed rate, stand-off distance, and current. The effects of these four input process parameters on deposition geometry, dilution, and bead continuity are investigated in this study. Attempts have been made to explain the experimental results with only two compound parameters, “energy deposition per length” and “powder deposition per length” instead of four independent input process parameters. It is observed that the variation of dilution is very little when the scanning speed increases from 100 to 600 mm/min and other process parameters remain constant. When the powder feed rate increases and other parameters remain constant, initially the dilution decreases rapidly and attains a minimum value which do not change further with increase in powder feed rate. It is also observed that the dilution remains almost constant around 6–9% as the stand-off distance changes from 7 to 11 mm and other process parameters remain constant. How garments contribute to performance of the clothing system during wear is of interest, as is understanding the value of using fabric properties to inform end-use characteristics. To investigate the influences of layering upper-body garments, four fabrics were used to construct two first-layer garments (wool and polyester) and two outer-layer garments (wool and membrane laminate). Over six sessions, 10 moderately trained males wore each first-layer garment as a single layer and in combination with each outer-layer garment while resting, running and walking in cold environmental conditions (8 ± 1°C, 81 ± 4% RH). Here, the type of garment arrangement worn (fabric type or number of layers) had little influence on heart rate, core body temperature and change in body mass. Weighted mean covered skin temperature was warmer and weighted mean next-to-skin vapour pressure was typically higher (following the onset of exercise) with two layers versus one. Differences among fabrics for individual properties were typically overstated compared to differences among corresponding garments for physiological and psychophysical variables under the conditions of this study. These findings inform the interpretation of particular fabric properties and highlight issues to be acknowledged during development/refinement of fabric test methods. Light-emitting structures were prepared with new polymer material based on ethylhexyloxy-phenyles used as emissive layer. Ohmic and Schottky contacts, made from golden and indium-tin oxide, were deposited as thin film anodes for investigation of the conduction mechanism at the electrode interfaces and in the bulk of devices. The influence of the polymer film thickness over the electrical characteristics was investigated. For golden anode, space charge formation and bulk limited conduction mechanism was found. For indium-tin oxide anode, complex behavior of the structures was found, which suggests mixed mode of injection limited conduction and electric field dependence of the charges mobility according to the space charge limited conduction model. Continuous advances in the poultry industry have stimulated the use of alternative feeds in poultry diets, and in particular glycerine, given its availability via the increase in world production of biodiesel. Glycerol is the principal component of glycerine, and can be used as an energy source to replace e.g. corn. However, other residual compounds, such as methanol and high levels of sodium, limit its use in animal feeds in large quantities. Several studies have found that the nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolisable energy of glycerine (AMEn) varies significantly between broilers, laying hens and quail, due to different processing/extraction methods (via biodiesel production). However, an energetic availability of at least 85% has been verified. Knowledge of the main metabolic pathways of glycerol and other components of glycerine is important for future studies on this feed material and to determine its main limitations. Understanding the relationship between the quality of the glycerine and its role as a source of dietary energy will allow more precise inclusion of glycerine in the formulation of balanced diets, without negatively affecting the performance of poultry. Upcoming nesting behaviour traits, such as the exact oviposition time or the time spent in the nest, have a direct impact on economically relevant aspects. Hens which stay for a long time inside the nest box, require more nest capacity which result in higher investments for the farmer. This is similar to flocks in which most of the layers have the need to lay their eggs in a short time frame during the day. For both of these nesting behaviour traits, published data have shown strain differences. While brown layers are more relaxed in terms of their oviposition time, almost 90% of a white layer flock lay their eggs within 3 hours during the morning. Additionally, a white layer on average occupies the nest 15 minutes longer than a brown layer. The estimated heritabilities for both traits are on a medium level of around h² = 0.25, and are therefore susceptible to genetically-linked changes. Lower heritabilities are estimated for indirect nesting behaviour traits such as the time interval between two consecutively laid eggs (h² = 0.09) or the total clutch size (h² = 0.25). Ranging behaviour traits also show heritabilities on a medium level. The published heritability for the frequency of passages as well as for the length of stay in the winter garden is h² = 0.24, however, their relationship to the most important selection trait ‘egg number’, is negative. The laying performance tested with the Funnel Nest Box (FNB) show differences to the recorded egg number of full sibs which have been tested in cages. Tabled genetic parameters showed low correlations for the egg number at peak production (rg = +0.2 to rg = +0.4) which could be explained by genotype x environment effects. In the last decade, there has been growing interest in the use of natural herbs and medicinal plants as feed additives in poultry diets to maximise their potential output. Ginger is one such potential rhizome with a wide range of medicinal effects. In broilers and layers, this plant has been used in different forms, doses and durations. In this review, documented effects of ginger in poultry feed on feed intake and feed conversion ratio, growth and weight gain, carcass yield, egg production and quality, antioxidants and blood biochemistry, with their possible mechanisms of action, are discussed. Growth promoters are feed additives used to improve the rate and uniformity of broiler growth whilst increasing feed efficiency. Low, prophylactic doses of antibiotics have been standard practice. The development of direct antibiotic resistance of pathogens in the species receiving the feed, as well as the indirect resistance to similar antibiotics used in human medicine as the result of food chain residues, led to the suspension of the licenses for several major antibiotics in the European Union since 1971, and in 2006 licenses for all sub-therapeutic levels for growth promotion were withdrawn. Therefore, there is great interest in developing natural alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters in order to maintain both bird performance and health. Nigella sativa (black cumin) has been used – in herbal medicine- for centuries for treatment of various disorders including infections. Most nutritional studies with minerals have been carried out using dietary supplements, with little attention given to the role of those commonly found in drinking water. This is important since underground water supplies, which may contain high concentrations of dissolved salts, is a common source of drinking water for poultry in many countries. Recent evidence suggests that some minerals may exert adverse effects on the performance of growing broilers and laying hens when present in drinking water at concentrations similar to those found in other sources. Commercially farmed birds already receive a balanced diet and if they are also receiving high levels of nutrient as salt in the water in the form of sodium and chloride ions, then the performance of the birds may be negatively affected. The current NRC recommendations for broiler chickens and laying hens are cause for concern within the animal feed industry, as they are based on very old trial data. This means the work was not only conducted with old-fashioned breeds of commercial chickens, but also relied on inorganic oxides and sulphates in feed and archaic diet formulation, with different quality and types of raw materials compared to those fed now. For modern poultry producers, these recommendations are so obsolete that they may be considered redundant for practical purposes. Broiler chickens and laying hens have benefitted from improvements in genetics and feeding practices since the 1950's and 60's, when many of the trials were run. They now also have the viable option of using chemically organic forms of minerals, which are known to be better absorbed, utilised and stored in tissues compared to inorganic ores. Since 2003, a program of research has been conducted comparing commercial organic minerals (Bioplexes®, Alltech Inc, USA) with inorganic forms, which monitored performance and excretion of minerals, as well as evaluating the new (lower) levels of organic minerals required for sustaining poultry performance. This large scale project began with a series of seminars, including one day on poultry, where global experts in this area discussed the problems and issues relating to mineral nutrition. A collection of the papers from these seminars were compiled and published (Taylor-Pickard and Tucker, 2005), and gave rise to a global project to redefine mineral nutrition. An adequate supply of all nutrients, including proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water, has to be provided to support maximum productivity of laying hens. Among these nutrients, vitamins are particularly important, since they are essential for optimum health as well as normal physiological functions of the hens. As most vitamins cannot be synthesized by poultry in sufficient amounts to meet physiological demand, they must be obtained from the diet. The absence from feed or impaired absorption or utilization of vitamins can lead to specific deficiency disorders. This review reports on the occurrence and the physiological functions of all vitamins and summarizes research related to the requirements for and the beneficial effects of supplemental vitamins for laying hens. The recommendations for dietary supplementation of vitamins from various organizations are compared and put into perspective of modern poultry genotypes and current husbandry conditions. As there is good evidence that the minimum dietary vitamin levels, required to prevent clinical deficiencies may not support optimum health, performance and welfare of poultry under today's conditions it is recommended to include a safety margin to the vitamin requirements of laying hens. The properties of hydrocarbon reservoirs are generally derived from core experiments and use theories of fluid flow that normally assume homogeneous core properties. Reservoirs, however, are generally heterogeneous, and interpretations of the results of these experiments are likely to be unreliable if the core from which the data are derived is heterogeneous. This article examines experimentally immiscible displacement through well-defined permeability heterogeneities, modeled using 2-D visual models packed with clear beads of different permeabilities. The results indicated that the displacement patterns were dominated by capillary pressure effects and that they were different from those found in miscible systems. This understanding is needed, since in reservoir simulators, the simulator codes must contain the correct physics, and in core analysis, the effluent profiles must be correctly interpreted for sensible predictions. A face to face survey was carried out in randomly selected 124 layer producers in 7 most important egg producing cities in Turkey between September 2006 and May 2007 in order to investigate the financial impacts of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreaks in Turkish commercial layer-egg producers. The financial analyses were divided into 3 periods, namely ‘before the outbreak (October 2004-January 2005)’, ‘during the outbreak (October 2005 - January 2006)’ and ‘after the outbreak (February-May 2006)’.Comparing the egg prices ‘before the disease’ with the situation during the outbreaks, the egg prices dropped from 0.091 YTL/egg to 0.038 YTL/egg. On average, the rate of capacity utilization, enterprise incomes and profits declined by 40%, 75% and 200% respectively. 14.5% of the producers had to stop production for about 5 months. 64.5% invested on average 6,648 YTL/enterprise to improve bio-security. The debts of the enterprises increased 3-4 folds due to the disease outbreaks, with 87% of the producers having to outlay an extra 153,426 YTL on average from their personal funds.In the ‘after the outbreak’ period, the prices and sales of table eggs recovered and even exceeded those of the ‘before the outbreak’ period, and the producers who managed to continue production appeared to be better off.
