Anisometropia can affect visual development in children. Investigations of anisometropia in high myopes would explore potential causes related to anisometropia, highlighting the management of anisometropia in high myopia. The prevalence of anisometropia ranged from 0.6% to 4.3% in general paediatric population and from 7% to 14% in myopes. Anisometropia is regarded as an associated factor for myopia development, while myopia progression is a stimulus driving anisometropic development. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anisometropia and its association with refraction development in Chinese children with high myopia. In the cohort study, a total of 1,577 highly myopic (spherical equivalent ≤−5.0D) children aged 4–18 years were included. Refractive parameters (dioptre of sphere, dioptre of cylinder, corneal curvature radius, and axial length) of both eyes were measured after cycloplegia. The prevalence and degree of anisometropia were compared among refractive groups (non-parametric tests or chi-square tests), and regression analyses were used to determine associated factors of anisometropia. The statistical significance was set to P < 0.05 (two-tailed). In highly myopic children with a mean (standard deviation) age of 13.06 (2.80) years, the proportions of spherical equivalent anisometropia, cylindrical anisometropia and spherical anisometropia ≥1.00 D were 34.5%, 21.9% and 39.9%, respectively. There was more spherical equivalent anisometropia associated with more severe astigmatism (P for trend <0.001). In the multivariate regression analysis, more spherical equivalent anisometropia, cylindrical anisometropia and spherical anisometropia were associated with higher degrees of astigmatism (standard beta = −0.175, −0.148 and −0.191, respectively). More spherical anisometropia was associated with better spherical power (standard beta = 0.116). The proportion of anisometropia in highly myopic children was high, compared with previously reported general population, and more severe anisometropia was associated with higher degree of cylindrical power, but not spherical power. People with diabetes mellitus (DM) are at an increased risk for developing dry eye disease (DED). However, the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain unclear. Recent studies have found that the ocular surface microbiota (OSM) differs significantly between patients with DED and healthy people, suggesting that OSM dysbiosis may contribute to the pathogenesis of DED. This hypothesis provides a new possible explanation for why diabetic patients have a higher prevalence of DED than healthy people. The high-glucose environment and the subsequent pathological changes on the ocular surface can cause OSM dysbiosis. The unbalanced microbiota then promotes ocular surface inflammation and alters tear composition, which disturbs the homeostasis of the ocular surface. Using electrophysiology (ERG) to investigate the early alterations of retinal function in diabetic children and adolescents without diabetic retinopathy (DR) or visual impairment (VI). We recorded and compared the data of full-field flicker ERGs between 59 normal subjects and 60 children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) from the Children's Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai. In both groups, patients with diabetes and healthy controls were matched for age, gender, weight, height, BMI, intraocular pressure (IOP), and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). Among the parameters of the outcomes of ERG, the implicit time in eyes in DM patients was significantly prolonged compared to normal eyes (p =.008, 16 Td-s; p =.000, 32 Td-s). In the case group, we found significantly positive correlation between implicit time and BMI (p <.05), as well as implicit time and axial length (AL). The study reveals that the dysfunction of retina in DM children can be detected with ERGs. Abnormal lipid metabolism has been proved to be implicated in the complex pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy (DR). 12-lipoxygenase (12-LOX) is a member of lipoxygenase family responsible for the oxygenation of cellular polyunsaturated fatty acids to produce lipid mediators which modulate cell inflammation. This review explores the role of 12-lipoxygenase and its products in the pathogenesis of DR. A comprehensive medical literature search was conducted on PubMed till September 2021. Emerging evidence has demonstrated that 12-LOX and its main product 12- hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (12-HETE) activate retinal cells, especially retinal vascular endothelial cells, through the activation of NADPH oxidase and the subsequent generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), mediating multiple pathological changes during DR. Genetic deletion or pharmacological inhibition models of 12-LOX in mice show protection from DR. 12-LOX and its product 12-HETE take important part in DR pathogenesis and show their potential as future therapeutic targets for DR. Purpose: To compare the prevalence of dry eye disease between children with and without diabetes, and analyze the factors associated with dry eye disease in children with diabetes. Materials and methods: 38 children with diabetes were selected as cases, and 40 children without diabetes constituted the control group. The prevalence of dry eye disease in both groups was statistically analyzed. Related factors of dry eye disease were analyzed in children with diabetes. Results: The prevalence of dry eye disease in the case group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P <.01), with the attributable proportion among the exposed (0.827) and the population attributable fraction (0.700). Univariate analysis showed that the diabetes duration, best-corrected visual acuity, corneal sensation, and levels of glycosylated hemoglobin were associated with dry eye disease in children with diabetes. Logistic regression analysis revealed that only diabetes duration and corneal sensation were independent factors associated with dry eye disease. The diabetes duration was significantly higher and the level of corneal sensation was significantly lower in subjects with dry eye disease than in those without dry eye disease. Conclusions: Early screening and close follow-up of dry eye disease in children with diabetes should be strictly implemented, especially in children with a long duration of diabetes and those with peripheral neuropathy. Purpose: To evaluate common strategies for screening myopia. Methods: A total of 2,248 children aged 6 to 12 years from five randomly selected primary schools were included for the screening. Enrolled study participants underwent distant uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA, Standard Logarithmic Visual Acuity E Chart) and non-cycloplegic auto-refraction (NCAR, Topcon KR-8800). Among them, 1,639 children (72.9%) accepted cycloplegic auto-refraction. Taking rejection of cycloplegia into account, receiver operating characteristic curves were drawn to compare the accuracies of the four strategies (I, Cycloplegic auto-refraction; II, NCAR; III, UCVA; IV, Combination of UCVA and NCAR). Decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to compare net benefits. Tenfold cross-validation was used for statistical analyses. Results: For myopia (spherical equivalent refraction, SE ≤ −0.5D) screening, the mean sensitivities were 73.79% (SD: 5.40%), 85.57% (6.84%), 59.71% (13.49%), and 85.06% (6.68%) for Strategy I to IV; with mean specificities of 100% (0%), 87.43% (4.27%), 89.74% (10.25%), and 88.65% (5.07%), respectively. For screening early myopia (SE ≤ −0.5D and ≥−1.0D), the mean sensitivities were 73.44% (7.69%), 82.39% (5.32%), 54.27% (14.58%), and 81.76% (9.60%) for Strategy I to IV; with mean specificities of 100% (0%), 79.13% (4.86%), 85.48% (9.86%), and 81.17% (4.16%). Based on DCA, the net benefits of Strategy IV were the highest, with the probability thresholds ranging from 12% to 50%, after adjusting the TestHarms. For early myopia, the net benefits of Strategy IV were the highest with the probability threshold ranging from 5% to 34%. The appearance of tessellated fundus in an eye may act as a marker in identifying visual performance, degree of myopia or risk of progression of myopia in a given eye. A systematic literature search using key words was performed using PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar and of the 832 studies identified, 10 full-length articles, which met the inclusion criteria, were considered for review. The primary outcome measures were association of tessellated fundus with: (i) visual acuity, (ii) refractive error, (iii) axial length, (iv) choroidal thickness and (v) future progression of myopia when compared to either no myopic maculopathy, or more severe myopic maculopathy. There was no significant difference in the visual acuity noted between eyes with normal fundus and tessellated fundus appearance. Compared to eyes with tessellated fundus, eyes with more severe myopic maculopathy had a four-line decrease in best-corrected visual acuity, more myopia (mean difference 2.75 D, range 0.28-5.78 D) and a longer axial length (mean difference 2 mm, range 2.29 to 1.71 mm). Eyes with tessellated fundus generally exhibited a significant decrease in choroidal thickness compared to eyes with no maculopathy. In mostly older individuals, eyes with tessellated fundus had a better outcome with respect to visual acuity, degree of myopia and axial length compared to other severe myopic maculopathies, but had a worse outcome for choroidal thickness and degree of myopia, compared to eyes with no myopic maculopathy. The features such as reduced choroidal thickness combined with a predilection to infra-temporal and parapapillary regions may indicate regions of stress that are prone to more stretching/atrophic changes. This systematic review demonstrated an association of tessellated fundus with visual acuity, refractive error, axial length and choroidal thickness and hence emphasises the documentation of the presence and location of tessellated fundus appearance that may help in predicting the progression of myopia. Purpose: To perform a short-term and a long-term cost-utility analysis of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) surgery in Shanghai, China Methods: A total of 117 patients who underwent RRD surgery at Shanghai First People's Hospital, Affiliated Shanghai Jiaotong University, and then underwent follow-up for at least 1 year, were included in the study. Costs associated with RRD surgery and time trade-off utility values before and after surgery were recorded. Short-term analysis was made for 1 year. Quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) gained by RRD surgery over the lifetime were calculated at a 3% discount rate in the long-term analysis. This study used the bootstrap method in statistical analysis and one-way sensitivity analyses to test robustness of the results. Results: Compared with no treatment, the mean incremental costs of RRD surgery was 11,384 Chinese yuan (CN¥) (US$1751); the mean additional QALYs gained was 0.05 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.04-0.06) for 1 year and 0.88 (95% CI 0.64-1.13) for life expectancy; the incremental cost effectiveness ratio (ICER) was CN¥224,921 (US$34,603)/QALY for the short-term, and CN¥13,794 (US$2122)/QALY for the long-term. In short-term analysis, the ICER was CN¥150,087 (US$23,090)/QALY for scleral buckling surgery, and CN¥507,727 (US$78,112)/QALY for vitreous surgery. In the long-term analysis, the ICER was CN¥6280 (US$966)/QALY for scleral buckling, and CN¥30,756 (US$4732)/QALY for vitreous surgery. Conclusions: For RRD patients, surgery increases QALYs. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common complication of diabetes. DR obstructs blood supply to the retina and has serious and long-lasting detrimental effects on quality of life. Panretinal photocoagulation, a laser surgical intervention, is advocated for early treatment of DR to prevent visual loss; however, results from studies reporting its efficacy vary markedly. In this review, we systematically conducted a database search of randomized controlled trials that investigated the safety and efficacy of different types of laser interventions, alone or in combination with adjunct intravitreal steroid utilization, in patients with DR. Data from 14 studies demonstrated that panretinal photocoagulation can be a safe and effective option for reducing visual loss and blindness in patients with DR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate the association between the TNF-α-308G/A polymorphism and ocular chlamydia trachomatis (C. Trachomatis) infection among Han Chinese children. Methods: 248 patients and 162 matched healthy controls were recruited. The diagnosis of ocularC. Trachomatisinfection was given after clinical observation and latex immunochromatography tests. The TNF-α-308G/A polymorphism was genotyped by sequencing. Results: No association was found between the TNF-α-308G/A polymorphism and ocularC. Trachomatisinfection. Purpose: To assess the vision health-related quality of life (VRQoL) and self-rated functional status in subjects with Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). Methods: 163 RRD subjects were studied. A Control group with mild eye conditions was also set. The VRQoL of these 2 groups were assessed by the Chinese-version low vision quality of life questionnaire (CLVQOL), utility value calculated by Time tradeoff method, and 3 global self-assessment scales were used to reflect subjects' perceptions of their visual function. Results: The mean CLVQOL scores were significantly lower in the RRD group as compared to the Control group. The highest subscales score decrement was found in “Psychological adjustment.” The average utility value of the RRD group is 0.71. Independently significant predictors of VRQoL were weighted average LogMAR visual acuity and retinal quadrants detached in extent. Conclusions: RRD subjects suffered with substantial impairment in VRQoL, especially the mental health. Different aspects of scotomas result in different VRQoL impairment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
