This paper investigates the scheduling of a no-wait two-machine flow shop considering anticipatory sequence-dependent setup time and a probable rework for both machines to minimise mean completion time (MCT). To tackle the problem, a robust meta-heuristic algorithm, namely the adapted imperialist competitive algorithm (AICA), has been proposed and is compared with two common and popular meta-heuristic algorithms (i.e. genetic algorithm (GA) and population-based simulated annealing (PBSA)). In this study, we have adapted a traditional imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) with some considerable changes. First of all, a revolution procedure is added to the algorithm for imperialists similar to colonies. Furthermore, the revolution is only performed when the new solution is better than the previous solution, and chief among them for preservation of premature convergence, the concept of global war is applied. However, the performance of AICA is sensitive to the choice of the best parameter values. Thus, to obtain optimal performance, a comprehensive calibration methodology called response surface methodology is employed to obtain the best combination of parameter values. In order to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of proposed algorithms, several test problems are generated and the results obtained from algorithms are then compared in terms of relative percentage deviation. Rate modifying activity (RM) is a type of maintenance after which the processing rate of the machine increases. RM is a very new topic in academic studies. However, it is very common in real world situations. In this paper, we study the integrated problem of assigning a common due-date to all jobs, scheduling the jobs and making decisions about the position of RM in a single machine environment in which the setup times are sequence dependent. The objective is minimising the summation of earliness costs, tardiness costs and due date related costs. This problem has never been studied in the literature with any arbitrary criterion. We construct a time-dependent travelling salesman problem (TDTSP) formulation for this problem. The position of the optimal common due date and some dominance properties for the position of RM are presented. A branch and bound (B&B) procedure is developed to solve the problem optimally. This paper deals with a problem of partial flexible job shop with the objective of minimising makespan and minimising total operation costs. This problem is a kind of flexible job shop problem that is known to be NP-hard. Hence four multi-objective, Pareto-based, meta-heuristic optimisation methods, namely non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), non-dominated ranked genetic algorithm (NRGA), multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) and Pareto archive evolutionary strategy (PAES) are proposed to solve the problem with the aim of finding approximations of optimal Pareto front. A new solution representation is introduced with the aim of solving the addressed problem. For the purpose of performance evaluation of our proposed algorithms, we generate some instances and use some benchmarks which have been applied in the literature. Also a comprehensive computational and statistical analysis is conducted in order to analyse the performance of the applied algorithms in five metrics including non-dominated solution, diversification, mean ideal distance, quality metric and data envelopment analysis are presented. Data envelopment analysis is a well-known method for efficiently evaluating the effectiveness of multi-criteria decision making. In this study we proposed this method of assessment of the non-dominated solutions. Recently, the mixed-model assembly line (MMAL) has been widely studied by many researchers. In fact, there are two basic problems, namely balancing and sequencing problems, which have been investigated in a lot of studies separately, but few researchers have solved both problems simultaneously. Regarding this, the best results in minimising total utility work have been gained by developing a co-evolutionary genetic algorithm (Co-GA) so far. This paper provides a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to jointly solve the problems. Because of NP-hardness, an evolution strategies (ES) algorithm is presented and evaluated by the same test problems in the literature. Two main hypotheses, namely simultaneous search and feasible search, are tested in the proposed algorithm to improve the quality of solutions. To calibrate the algorithm, a Taguchi design of experiments is employed. The proposed ES is compared with the modified version of Co-GA and the MILP model results. According to numerical experiments and statistical proving, the proposed ES outperformed the modified Co-GA from two points of view: the objective function and the computational time. Additionally, the meta-heuristic algorithms are examined in terms of other well-known criteria in MMAL. Finally, the contribution of each hypothesis in accounting for this superiority is analysed. In studies on automatic scheduling problems, processing times do not differ according to repetition of job or process sequences so it may also be necessary to consider processing times independent from setup times. While considering setup times, the human factor has an important effect on setup, so by the processing of similar tasks frequently worker skills improve and they are able to perform setup at a greater pace. This fact is known as the ‘learning effect’ in the literature. This paper deals with sequence-dependent setup times (SDSTs) hybrid flow shop scheduling with learning effect of setup times for minimising weighted sum of makespan and total tardiness. A mathematical programming model that incorporates these aspects of the problem is developed which belongs to the NP-hard class. Thus, because of the intensive computation, we propose a novel meta-heuristic approach called water flow-like algorithm (WFA) which has the feature of multiple and dynamic numbers of solution agents. Various parameters of the problem and the WFA are reviewed by means of Taguchi experimental design. For the evaluation of the proposed WFA, problem data was generated to compare it against a random key genetic algorithm (RKGA). This paper addresses the scheduling problems in a hybrid flowshop with two objectives of minimising the makespan and total tardiness. Since this problem is NP-hard, evolutionary algorithms based on the genetic algorithm (GA) namely; BOGAW, BOGAC, BOGAT, and BOGAS are proposed for searching the Pareto-optimal frontier. In these algorithms, we propose to generate a section of solutions for the next generation using a neighbourhood search structure on the best individual in each generation. The selection procedure selects the best chromosome based on an evaluation mechanism used in the algorithm (i.e., weighted sum, crowding distance, TOPSIS and single-objective). The aim of this paper is to clarify that the cited characteristic is efficient and it enhances the efficiency of algorithms. Therefore, we perform a comparison between the proposed algorithms to find the best alternative. Data envelopment analysis is used to evaluate the performance of approximation methods. The obtained result from the comparison shows that, BOGAC is the more efficient. To continue, since the efficiency of our idea is not clear, we compare our efficient algorithm with other efficient algorithms in the literature (namely PGA-ALS and MOGLS). This paper applied a novel evolutionary algorithm, imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA), for a group scheduling problem in a hybrid flexible flow shop with sequence-dependent setup times by minimising maximum completion time. This algorithm simulates a social-economical procedure, imperialistic competition. Initial population is generated randomly and evolution is carried out during the algorithm. Firstly individuals, countries, are divided into two categories: imperialists and colonies. Imperialist competition will occur among these empires. This competition will increase some empires authority by ruining a weak empire and dividing its colonies among others. Electromagnetic-like mechanism concepts are employed here to model the influence of the imperialist on their colonies. The algorithm will continue until one imperialist exists and possesses all countries. In order to prevent carrying out extensive experiments to find optimum parameters of the algorithm, we apply the Taguchi approach. The computational results are compared with the outstanding benchmark on the flow shop scheduling problem, random key genetic algorithms (RKGA), and it shows superiority of the ICA. This paper deals with open shop scheduling to minimise total tardiness. Contrary to other scheduling problems (i.e., flow and job shops), the formulation of the open shop is given far less attention in the literature. Therefore, we intend to fulfil this gap by the presentation of four different mixed integer linear programming models. We compare the models on the basis of their complexity sizes. Furthermore, we propose two metaheuristics based on genetic algorithm and variable neighbourhood search. We exhaustively explore the effect of different operators and parameters on the performance of genetic algorithm by means of Taguchi method. Two computational experiments are conducted to evaluate the models and algorithms for performance. The first one includes small-sized instances by which the models and general performance of the algorithms are examined. The increasing market demand for product variety forces manufacturers to design mixed-model assembly lines (MMAL) on which a variety of product models similar to product characteristics are assembled. This paper presents a method combining the new ranked based roulette wheel selection algorithm with Pareto-based population ranking algorithm, named non-dominated ranking genetic algorithm (NRGA) to a just-in-time (JIT) sequencing problem when two objectives are considered simultaneously. The two objectives are minimisation the number of setups and variation of production rates. This type of problem is NP-hard. Various operators and parameters of the proposed algorithm are reviewed to calibrate the algorithm by means of the Taguchi method. The solutions obtained via NRGA are compared against solutions obtained via total enumeration (TE) scheme in small problems and also against four other search heuristics in small, medium and large problems. This paper deals with the two-stage assembly flowshop scheduling problem with minimisation of weighted sum of makespan and mean completion time as the objective. The problem is NP-hard, hence we proposed a meta-heuristic named imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) to solve it. Since appropriate design of the parameters has a significant impact on the algorithm efficiency, we calibrate the parameters of this algorithm using the Taguchi method. In this paper, we propose a multi-objective differential evolution algorithm (MODEA) to solve the multi-objective simple assembly line balancing problem type-2 (SALBP-2). This problem arises when in an existing assembly line, changes in the production process or demand structure take place and the organisation wants to produce the optimum number of items using a fixed number of workstations, which is associated with optimally assigning the tasks to an ordered sequence of stations such that the precedence relations are not violated and some measures of performance are optimised. The two considered objectives are: minimising the cycle time and the smoothness index of the assembly line. To that purpose, we develop a MODEA which unlike the existing algorithms deals with the considered objectives separately in selecting the next population members by proposing a new acceptance scheme based on the Pareto dominance concept and a new evaluation scheme based on TOPSIS. Also, by using the Taguchi method, we tune the effective factors of the developed algorithm. Then its efficiency is tested over available assembly line balancing benchmarks and compared to a new algorithm provided recently in the bi-objective SALBP-2 literature. Product portfolio diversity is prominent for customers, but critical for manufacturers. From the manufacturers' perspective, diversity must be maintained at a level where engineering costs do not exceed the acquired advantages of increased market share. Therefore, in this paper we consider the problem of product portfolio planning to simultaneously maximise market share and minimise manufacturing engineering costs. Since this problem belongs to the NP-hard class of problems, exact algorithms are incapable of rendering an optimal solution. Therefore, we used metaheuristic-based simulated annealing to deal with the problem. Our proposed algorithm consists of two parts, i.e. a random search and a predetermined rule to generate the next possible neighbours (product portfolio). In order to have a robust algorithm, we calibrated different levels of our problem's parameters using the Taguchi method. This method picks the best levels of different parameters, conducting the least possible experiments. To evaluate the performance of our proposed algorithm, we compared it with a strong algorithm - the genetic algorithm. We used this comparison as the basis of our research. In this paper, we present a multi-stage hybrid model for analysing a supply chain network (SCN) collapse recovery possibility. In the first stage of the model, we analyse the ability of an SCN to fulfil its customers required due date (RDD). As soon as the SCN defaults to timely fulfil their customers RDD, the second stage of the model is triggered to measure the collapse recovery possibility (CRP) of the SCN. Then, we calculate the final collapse recovery possibility (FCRP) of the SCN. Since the operation times, customer demand and external supply of raw material are uncertain, we use fuzzy triangular numbers to estimate the value of foregoing parameters. Consequently, we employ fuzzy program evaluation and review technique (FPERT) to calculate the completion time of SCN operations. In the third stage, for the critical elements of the SCN obtained from FPERT, the SC simulator is developed to provide a dynamic view of the SC and assesses the impact of decisions recommended by the SC fuzzy models on SC performance. Moreover, an empirical example is presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed model. This paper addresses the general assembly line balancing problem where the simple version is enriched by considering sequence-dependent setup times between tasks. Recently, Andres et al. (Andres, C., Miralles, C., and Pastor, R., 2008. Balancing and scheduling tasks in assembly lines with sequence-dependent setup times. European Journal of Operational Research, 187, (3), 1212-1223.) proposed the type I general assembly line balancing problem with setups (GALBPS-I) and developed a mathematical model and several algorithms for solving the problem. In a similar vein, we scrutinised the GALBPS type II problem where the challenge is to find the minimum cycle time for a predefined number of work stations. To solve the problem, we develop a mathematical model and a novel simulated annealing (SA) algorithm to solve such an NP-hard problem. We then employed the Taguchi method as an optimisation technique to extensively tune different parameters of our algorithm and make the classical SA algorithm more efficient in terms of running time and solution quality. The flexible job-shop scheduling problem (FJSP) is a generalisation of the classical job-shop scheduling problem which allows an operation of each job to be executed by any machine out of a set of available machines. FJSP consists of two sub-problems which are assigning each operation to a machine out of a set of capable machines (routing sub-problem) and sequencing the assigned operations on the machines (sequencing sub-problem). This paper proposes a variable neighbourhood search (VNS) algorithm that solves the FJSP to minimise makespan. In the process of the presented algorithm, various neighbourhood structures related to assignment and sequencing problems are used for generating neighbouring solutions. To compare our algorithm with previous ones, an extensive computational study on 181 benchmark problems has been conducted. In this paper, we present a fuzzy multiple criteria decision making (FMCDM) model known as fuzzy balancing and ranking. In contrast to other MCDM models, our proposed model does not require the weights of decision making criteria. First, we appraise the performance of alternatives against criteria via linguistic variables which are expressed as triangular fuzzy numbers. The foregoing model obtains the alternative rankings through a four-stage process. Second, an outranking matrix is derived indicating that the frequency with which one alternative is superior to all other alternatives based on each criterion. Third, the outranking matrix is triangularised to obtain an implicit pre-ordering or provisional order of alternatives. Fourth, the provisional order of alternatives is subjected to various screening and balancing operations that require sequential application of a balancing principle to the so-called advantages-disadvantages table that combines the criteria with the pair-wise comparisons of alternatives. Additionally, to demonstrate the procedural implementation of the proposed model and its effectiveness, we apply it on a case study regarding the problem of supplier selection. This paper considers the problem of parallel machine scheduling with sequence-dependent setup times to minimise both makespan and total earliness/tardiness in the due window. To tackle the problem considered, a multi-phase algorithm is proposed. The goal of the initial phase is to obtain a good approximation of the Pareto-front. In the second phase, to improve the Pareto-front, non-dominated solutions are unified to constitute a big population. In this phase, based on the local search in the Pareto space concept, three multi-objective hybrid metaheuristics are proposed. Covering the whole set of Pareto-optimal solutions is a desired task of multi-objective optimisation methods. So in the third phase, a new method using an e-constraint hybrid metaheuristic is proposed to cover the gaps between the non-dominated solutions and improve the Pareto-front. Appropriate combinations of multi-objective methods in various phases are considered to improve the total performance. The multi-phase algorithm iterates over a genetic algorithm in the first phase and three hybrid metaheuristics in the second and third phases. Experiments on the test problems with different structures show that the multi-phase method is a better tool to approximate the efficient set than the global archive sub-population genetic algorithm presented previously. This paper presents a simulation-based experimental study of scheduling rules for scheduling a dynamic flexible flow line problem considering sequence-dependent setup times. A discrete-event simulation model is presented as well as eight adapted heuristic algorithms, including seven dispatching rules and one constructive heuristic, from the literature. In addition, six new proposed heuristics are implemented in the simulation model. Simulation experiments are conducted under various conditions such as setup time ratio and shop utilisation percentage. One of the proposed rules performs better for the mean flow time measure and another one performs better for the mean tardiness measure. In this paper a scheduling method based on variable neighbourhood search (VNS) is introduced to address a dynamic job shop scheduling problem that considers random job arrivals and machine breakdowns. To deal with the dynamic nature of the problem, an event-driven policy is selected. To enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the scheduling method, an artificial neural network with a back propagation error learning algorithm is used to update parameters of the VNS at any rescheduling point according to the problem condition. The proposed method is compared with some common dispatching rules that have been widely used in the literature for the dynamic job shop scheduling problem. This paper presents an efficient hybrid metaheuristics for scheduling jobs in a hybrid flowshop with sequence-dependent setup times. The problem is to determine a schedule that minimises the sum of earliness and tardiness of jobs. Since this problem class is NP-hard in the strong sense, there seems to be no escape from appealing to metaheuristic procedures to achieve near-optimal solutions for real life problems. This paper proposes the hybrid metaheuristic algorithm which comprises three components: an initial population generation method based on an ant colony optimisation, a simulated annealing algorithm as an evolutionary algorithm that employs certain probability to avoid becoming trapped in a local optimum, and a variable neighbourhood search which involves three local search procedures to improve the population. A design of experiments approach is employed to calibrate the parameters of the algorithm. Results of computational tests in solving 252 problems up to 100 jobs have shown that the proposed algorithm is computationally more effective in yielding solutions of better quality than the adapted random key genetic algorithm and immune algorithm presented previously. Much of the research on operations scheduling problems has either ignored setup times or assumed that setup times on each machine are independent of the job sequence. Furthermore, most scheduling problems that have been discussed in the literature are under the assumption that machines are continuously available. Nevertheless, in most real-life industries a machine can be unavailable for many reasons, such as unanticipated breakdowns (stochastic unavailability), or due to scheduled preventive maintenance where the periods of unavailability are known in advance (deterministic unavailability). This paper deals with hybrid flow shop scheduling problems in which there are sequence-dependent setup times (SDSTs), and machines suffer stochastic breakdowns, to optimise objectives based on the expected makespan. With the increase in manufacturing complexity, conventional scheduling techniques for generating a reasonable manufacturing schedule have become ineffective. An immune algorithm (IA) can be used to tackle complex problems and produce a reasonable manufacturing schedule within an acceptable time. In this research, a computational method based on a clonal selection principle and an affinity maturation mechanism of the immune response is used. This paper describes how we can incorporate simulation into an immune algorithm for the scheduling of a SDST hybrid flow shop with machines that suffer stochastic breakdowns. In this work we consider job shop problems where the setup times are sequence dependent under minimisation of the maximum completion time or makespan. We present a genetic algorithm to solve the problem. The genetic algorithm is hybridised with a diversification mechanism, namely the restart phase, and a simple form of local search to enrich the algorithm. Various operators and parameters of the genetic algorithm are reviewed to calibrate the algorithm by means of the Taguchi method. For the evaluation of the proposed hybrid algorithm, it is compared against existing algorithms through a benchmark. Virtual cellular manufacturing system (VCMS) is one of the modern strategies in the production facilities layout, which has attracted considerable attention in recent years. In this system, machines are located in different positions on the shop floor and virtual cells are a logical grouping of machines, jobs, and workers from the viewpoint of the production control system. These features not only enhance the system's agility but also allow a dynamic reassignment of cells as demand changes. This paper addresses the VCMS scheduling problems where the jobs have different orders on machines and the objective is to simultaneously minimize the weighted sum of the makespan and total traveling distance in order to create a balance between criteria. The research methodology firstly consists of a mathematical programming model with regard to the production constraints in order to describe the characteristics of the VCMS. Secondly, a basic genetic algorithm (GA), a biogeography-based optimization (BBO) algorithm, an algorithm based on hybridization of BBO and GA, and the BBO algorithm accompanied by restart phase are developed to solve the VCMS scheduling problems. The developed algorithms have been compared to each other and their performance are evaluated in terms of their best solution and computational time as effectiveness and efficiency criteria, respectively. Consequently, the performance of the best algorithm has been evaluated by the state-of-the-art algorithm, GA, in the literature.
