Research Findings: The Quality of Care for Infants and Toddlers (QCIT) observational measure was designed to address the need for a valid and reliable measure of the quality of caregiver-child interactions that could be used in both center-based and family child care (FCC) settings, and with diverse populations. Results from a psychometric field test of 400 classrooms indicated that the QCIT demonstrated strong evidence of reliability and validity. The QCIT was used to capture the quality of caregiver-child interactions for the professional development system We Grow Together. Average scores improved in the QCIT Support for Social-Emotional Development domain. Findings support using this measure to assess quality and focus professional development. Additional research could use the QCIT with other interventions focused on caregiver-child interactions. Practice or Policy: The QCIT provides the field with a reliable and valid measure for examining the quality of caregiver-child interaction in licensed child care settings, both centers and FCCs, serving infants and toddlers. Research Findings: This study examined associations between the expressive vocabulary of classroom peers and children’s own vocabulary knowledge using conceptual scoring in a linguistically diverse sample of 4-year-olds who attended universal preschool programs in a metropolitan area. Higher peer conceptually scored expressive vocabulary was associated with higher conceptually scored expressive vocabulary for all children. The association was stronger for children who were dual language learners (DLLs), such that higher peer ability was associated with stronger growth in conceptually scored expressive vocabulary for DLLs across languages than for children fluent in English.Practice or Policy: This research suggests that policymakers may want to investigate the advantages of setting aside slots in targeted programs for children who have stronger conceptual vocabularies. Administrators should consider conceptual and verbal ability and classroom composition when assigning children to classes. This research also suggests that greater use of intentional pairs or small groups and strategies such as coaching peers in supporting one another’s conceptual vocabulary may be particularly important for DLLs. Objectives. Latinos are the fastest-growing immigrant group in the USA. Yet, little is known about the emotional well-being of this population, such as the links among family, neighbourhood context and Latino immigrant youth mental health. Understanding this link will help determine which contexts negatively impact Latino immigrant youth mental health. Design. Drawing data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighbourhoods collected in 1994–1995 and 1997–1999, this study examined links between Latino youth's internalising behaviours, based on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), and neighbourhood characteristics as a function of immigrant status. The sample included 1040 (aged 9–17) Latino immigrant youth seen twice over three years and identified as first, second or third generation. In this study, neighbourhoods are made up of two to three census tracts that reflect similar racial/ethnic and socioeconomic composition. Using hierarchical linear regression models, the study also explored links between internalising behaviours and neighbourhood characteristics, including concentrated disadvantage, immigrant concentration and residential stability. Results. First- and second-generation youth had higher internalising behaviour scores (i.e., worse mental health) than third-generation youth after controlling for youth internalising behaviours at Wave 1, maternal depression and family characteristics. First- and second-generation youth were more likely to live in high immigrant-concentrated neighbourhoods and first-generation youth were more likely to live in residentially unstable neighbourhoods. Controlling for neighbourhood clusters eliminated the immigrant-generation internalising association. However, second-generation Latino youth living in neighbourhoods with higher residential stability had higher levels of internalising behaviour problems compared to first- and third-generation youth living in similar neighbourhoods. Conclusions. We found that the interaction between immigrant generation and neighbourhood context helps to explain differences observed in the mental health of second-generation immigrant youth, a result that may help other communities in the USA and other countries better understand the factors that contribute to immigrant youth well-being. Partner age is associated with youth's sex risk behaviors and sexually transmitted infections. At present, however, it is not known whether the co-occurrence of other risk behaviors is associated with having older sex partners during adolescence and young adulthood. Using growth curve modeling, this study first describes the shape of the age difference between participants and their sex partners across adolescence and young adulthood in a sample of African American youth. Second, whether this model varied systematically by sex, mother's education, and high school dropout was tested. Third, whether age differences were associated with youth's self-acceptance, alcohol use, and employment trajectories over these two developmental periods was assessed. Finally, whether these associations had non-proportional effects over both periods was tested. This study modeled sex partners' age differences nonlinearly, with females being more likely to date older partners at baseline and over time. High school dropouts also reported older partners at baseline. Self-acceptance and the number of hours worked were associated with sex partners' age differences over time, with the effect decreasing over young adulthood years. Alcohol use frequency was also associated with having older partners over time. This study discusses the findings from a health perspective on youth's sexual development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The beneficial or deleterious effects of employment on youth and well-being have been highly contested. This study explores whether work influences youths' sexual risk correlates in a sample of African Americans (N = 562; 55% females; M = 14.5 years, SD = 0.6 years) followed longitudinally from adolescence to early adulthood. The study used growth curve modeling to test the association between number of hours worked and condom use, sex partners' age differences, and number of partners over time. Working a greater number of hours was associated with less condom use, with the effect varying by youths' grade point average. Working a greater number of hours was associated with older sex partners among female youth. No association was found between work and number of partners. The findings suggest that working during adolescence and early adulthood increased participants' sexual activity, thus lending some support for the work consequences perspective. Research Findings: We examined the reliability and validity of the language, literacy, and mathematics domains of Work Sampling for Head Start (WSHS), an observational assessment designed for 3- and 4-year-olds. Participants included 112 children who were enrolled over a two-year period in Head Start and a number of other programs sponsored by community-based organizations affiliated with a local school district. Teachers were trained to administer the WSHS checklist and to collect observational data about their children over the course of the children's year of enrollment. Outcome data were individually administered tests of early reading and early mathematics. Cronbach's alphas, correlations, regressions, and receiver operating characteristic curves were computed. Results indicated very high reliability of WSHS subscales. Findings also demonstrated moderate correlations between WSHS and the outcomes and unique contributions to the assessments of reading and mathematics by WSHS over and above demographic variables. The receiver operating characteristic curves showed that WSHS can be used accurately by teachers to predict children's early mathematics and reading performance. Practice and Policy: Discussion includes the role of observational versus norm-referenced tests in early childhood classrooms. This study investigated whether pervasiveness of problems across settings predicted successful reduction of impairment in school, home, and interactions with others after controlling for other variables that may be stronger predictors. The data of 4,434 youths between the ages of 7 and 17 years in public mental health services in Michigan were examined employing logistic regressions, with 4 sets of predictors, as follows: demographic characteristics, risk factors, therapist's perception of impairment in the youth's caregiving environment, and pervasiveness of the youth's problems. The results indicated that pervasiveness of problems was the strongest predictor of poor outcomes for each domain. In addition, impaired caregiving environment, previous hospitalization for psychiatric or substance use problems, and placement out-of-home were also negatively associated with successful outcome. This article examines parents' reactions to the use of a curriculum-embedded performance assessment, the Work Sampling System(r) (WSS), with their kindergarten through third-grade children. Of the 350 surveys distributed to this predominantly low-income, African American, inner-city population, 246 were completed and returned, yielding a return rate of 70%. The data were aggregated into subscales, and internal reliability measures, descriptive statistics, and 2-step hierarchical regressions on each subscale were calculated. To examine the direct and indirect effect of parents' perceptions of teachers' willingness to use the WSS and other factors on parents' overall satisfaction, structural equation modeling (SEM) was used. Results demonstrate that parents in this study held positive attitudes toward the WSS and believed that the WSS benefitted their children. The majority of parents who returned the survey preferred the WSS Summary Reports to conventional report cards and wanted their children to continue participating in classrooms that use the WSS. Parents' perceptions of teachers' willingness to use the WSS and staff availability to answer parents' questions about the WSS strongly affected parents' attitudes toward the WSS. SEM showed that parents' attitudes toward the WSS were unaffected by whether children were high or low achievers in school. In sum, this study demonstrates that when schools using a systematic, curriculum-embedded performance assessment make an effort to keep parents informed about the assessment and when consistent informal communications between parents and teachers take place, parental reactions to performance assessment can be very positive.
