The synchronous hybrid classroom (SHC) combines on-site and remote learners simultaneously. This study aims to investigate how participation mode (on-site vs. remote) affects students’ perceived learning in a SHC, examining social presence as a mediator. A second aim explores how different learning activity types along the ICAP framework influence students’ perceived learning across both groups, again considering social presence as a potential mediator. A natural experiment was conducted with 241 vocational secondary school students regularly participating in a SHC, either on-site (n = 136) or remotely (n = 105). Results showed that participation mode influenced students’ perceived learning indirectly through social presence. Remote participants perceived their social presence as lower and learning less effective than on-site participants. Interactive learning activities were most frequently used in this SHC implementation. The mediating effect of social presence was particularly strong for active/interactive activities on-site and passive/interactive ones remotely. This study contributes to theory by unravelling the complex interplay of the pedagogical design of a SHC and students’ learning experiences, highlighting the critical role of fostering social presence to optimise learning outcomes in SHC. Furthermore, it underscores the practical necessity for robust technological infrastructure and professional development support for teachers to enhance the efficacy of SHC settings. The ongoing digital transformation requires teachers and teacher educators to re-conceptualise their roles and tasks. The purpose of the present study is to examine teacher educators’ challenges in the context of digital transformation, their technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) and the role of personal and contextual characteristics. To this end, this study employed an exploratory sequential mixed methods research design. Data were collected from individual semi-structured interviews (N = 8) and an online questionnaire (N = 179). Findings reveal that teacher educators experience challenges on the lecturer and institutional level. However, they rate their TPACK rather high. Results of multiple linear regression analysis indicate that frequency of digital technology use and perceived challenges are significant predictors of TPACK. Findings of the study shed light on teacher educators’ digital upskilling needs and relevant personal and contextual factors which need to be considered in the design of professional development curricula. The teacher echo refers to teachers' almost verbatim repetition of student responses and can be used to provide implicit feedback about students' achievement or understanding. Echoing student answers is a controversial strategy of classroom discourse, as some critics see it as a bad habit and consequently deny its use in the classroom. The aim of this research project was to learn more about the perceptions of unprejudiced, prospective teachers on this controversial type of teacher feedback. Therefore, two short videos of a simulated lesson with and without teacher echo were created. A sample of 410 teacher trainees was asked to rate the perceived instructional quality and answer a knowledge test about the lesson contents. Results showed no significant differences in perceived cognitive activation and teacher dominance, but higher perceived constructive support and better knowledge acquisition when using the teacher echo.
