This study examines the earnings differential between users and non-users of networks of Indonesian internal migrants. By exploiting the Indonesian Family Life Survey wave 5, we employ endogenous switching regression to handle the self-selection bias in the model. We find evidence that the inherent characteristics of the migrants create a tremendous earnings gap between the two agents. Users of networks experience a wage penalty compared to non-users of network. We also find that education has a dominant impact on increasing the earnings discrepancy for migrants. These suggest that network users find it difficult to catch up on the earnings of their non-user counterparts. In addition, the study reveals that networks are not necessarily the only influencing factor of earnings differential. Moreover, the study specifically suggests that hiring channel through networks supports migrants in securing employment. In light of growing difficulties for schools to attract teachers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields and the continued discussions surrounding the unionization of education, this paper examines the effect of collective bargaining (CB) laws on the salary of teachers with a STEM degree. To isolate the effect of bargaining laws on STEM teachers, we compare pay differentials between STEM and non-STEM teachers in CB-mandated and -prohibited areas, controlling for the local labor market. This study investigates the economic consequences of college attendance on wages, focusing on the wage increases associated with obtaining a degree, highlighting the Sheepskin Effect in a country characterized by high informality and youth unemployment as Colombia. Using administrative data for secondary school graduates (2002–2012) and a differences-in-differences framework, we estimate a 50.6% wage increase for college graduates and 68.1% premium over dropouts completing 90%-of-coursework. These findings suggest that college graduation is associated with reduced income inequality and a narrower gender wage gap, providing insights for policymakers on the benefits of promoting higher education to improve labor market outcomes. In contrast to studies that identify the expected earnings premium associated with any STEM degree or with specific college majors, we account for workers’ majors and the percent of total college credits completed in STEM courses (STEM intensity). We find that STEM intensity is an important determinant of log-earnings for many STEM and non-STEM majors, and that estimated earnings gaps between pairs of majors can change dramatically when STEM intensity is accounted for. In China, the regional economic development model affected by government competition is an important factor leading to the income inequality of urban and rural residents. This paper aims to study the influence mechanism of tax competition among local governments on urban-rural income gap from the perspective of government intervention and tries to explain the reasons for the gradual narrowing of urban-rural income disparity since 2010. Using a dynamic panel data of 30 provinces, this study reveals that tax competition has alleviated the urban-rural income gap, and this effect shows temporal extensibility and spatial correlation. It is more obvious in eastern and central China and consistent in different local tax categories. Although tax competition has narrowed the overall income gap, the wage income inequality has been exacerbated. Employing China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) survey data from 2014 to 2018, this paper studies the impact of the digital economy on the gender wage gap. Benchmark results suggest that the digital economy can significantly narrow the gender wage gap. The mechanism analysis shows that the digital economy bridges the gender wage gap by reducing family care burdens and improving the employment quality in favour of women. The heterogeneity analysis shows that the digital economy is conducive to narrowing the gender wage gap of the group with low and medium labour skills and the group with higher family burdens, suggesting the inclusiveness of the digital economy for disadvantaged women. The literature has shown that related diversification in more complex industries enhances economic growth in regions but also inter-regional inequality. However, it has drawn little attention to the relationship between industrial dynamics (i.e., the rise and fall of industries) and intra-regional wage inequality. This explorative study examines the relationship between industry dynamics and wage inequality in NUTS-3 regions in the Netherlands in the period 2010–2019. Our study shows that related diversification in less complex industries tends to reduce wage inequality within a region. This implies it remains a policy challenge to combine smart and inclusive growth in regions. Our study also showed that there is no significant relationship between the exit of industries and regional inequality, with one exception: unrelated low-complex exits tend to increase intra-regional wage inequality. Overall, these findings suggest that related diversification in less complex industries tends to bring benefits in terms of inclusive growth, while unrelated exits in less complex industries tend to do the opposite. This study re-analyzes the relationship between digital financial inclusion and the wages of low-wage workers in China using the conditional quantile and quantile selection model. The study finds that after correcting for sample selection bias, digital financial inclusion significantly increases the wage income of low-wage workers and reduces the rural-urban wage gap. Using a sample of recently graduated college students from South Korea, we estimate the effects of the between-majors and within-major gender wage gap. We use a recentered influence function to decompose the wage differential between majors and find that women face a higher rate of return to the field of study. In addition, women tend to select their program of study with the intention of optimizing their earnings potential relative to men. In calculating the within-major gender wage gap, we control for selectivity into a field of study extending the current methodology to a multinomial logit setting. We test our model using a sample of new graduates from South Korea. We consider six college majors. The within-major wage differential ranged from 8.2% for natural science graduates to 17% for social science graduates. After selection is accounted for, the gender wage gap becomes smaller in humanities graduates but increases in natural science and medicine graduates. Rapid expansion of precarious employment carries risks of exacerbating the gender wage gap in China. This article finds an inverse relationship between flexibility and security in the labor market, disproportionately affecting women workers. Drawing from the Marxist-feminist theory of social reproduction, the study conceptualizes China’s social reproduction regime as developmentalist, characterized by ongoing tension between economic development and social reproduction. Promoting precarious work, which reflects the operational logic of the developmentalist social reproduction regime, is essentially transferring social reproduction cost from capital to labor. This cost is predominantly shouldered by precarious workers, particularly women, resulting in a widened gender wage gap. Using the China Labor-force Dynamic Survey, the study finds empirical support for the theorization that the gender wage gap among precarious workers is significantly larger than among non-precarious workers. In this note we study how the share of workers in a corporation located in a high gender wage gap country impacts the wage gap in their home country operations. The wage effects of immigration have been widely studied, yet much of the research has focused on competitive threats to low-skilled native-born men. In contrast, this paper applies a gender lens to explore possible complementary relationships between immigration-induced outsourcing of domestic work and the earnings of native-born women, while recognizing the classed and racialized nature of domestic labor. Empirically, this article examines subgroup variations in earnings among full-time employed native-born women by education and race/ethnicity in relation to the state share of immigrants in the domestic service sector. The analysis combines data from the 2012 American Community Survey with state-level work-family policy data collected for 2010, accounting for compositional differences and selection into the labor force. Likely due to increased availability of affordable domestic services, the results show a higher immigrant share is associated with greater earnings for native-born women overall. However, education and race/ethnicity moderate this association, indicating that highly educated non-Hispanic white women benefit more than other women because the labor process and outsourcing of household production are classed and racialized. Hence, states with a higher share of immigrants filling domestic services exhibit wage dispersion patterns that reinforce intersectional inequality among native-born women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we investigate the effect of inter-country wage differentials on textile and garment (T&G) exports of Bangladesh and present an account of the important issue of why textile and garment exports are directed from developing countries to developed countries. Our empirical results imply that the wage differentials between developed and developing countries constitute one of the main drivers of T&G exports. In addition, we checked other factors such as the Multi-Fiber Arrangement (MFA) and the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) by including dummy variables representing the MFA quota withdrawal and the GSP. We found that removal of the MFA had a significant negative effect, as expected. Our study confirms the positive correlation between GSP and exports. After phasing out the MFA and its quota system, the wage differentials not only boost the T&G exports from Bangladesh, but also increase the effectiveness of GSP. Widening income inequality is a serious social concern in many countries. We examine the causal effect of a negative demand shock on executive compensation and worker wages using a quasi-natural experiment, considering Japanese firms that experienced a sudden and substantial export decline following the global financial crisis in the late 2000s. Worker wages tended to decline significantly more relative to executive compensation after the crisis in firms depending more on exports, causing a wider pay differential. We establish the robustness of our difference-in-difference results by considering selection into exporters, excluding sporadic exporters, and controlling for foreign ownership or liquidity. Using the data from the Chinese Household Income Project Survey and the decomposition method, this study investigates the determinants of the wage gap between members and non-members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) from 2002–2018. There were three new findings. First, the endowment difference component (especially education) is the main contributing factor to the wage gap between CPC members and non-members in 2002, 2013, and 2018. Second, the discrimination against CPC non-members decreased, whereas that of human capital increased from 2002 to 2018. Third, the endowment difference in the wage gap is greater for workers in SOEs than for non-SOEs during 2002–2018. The results indicate that most political elites are well-educated, and a larger increase in human capital in CPC members widened the wage gap from 2002 to 2018; workplace discrimination against CPC non-members still exists even in the current period. Litigation and courts have been important arbiters of labour policy reforms aimed at redressing Japan's growing social inequality. This article considers seven lawsuits brought by non-regular workers, who sought to use Article 20 of the 2012 Labour Contracts Act to gain equal pay for equal work. All seven cases reached Japan's Supreme Court amid Abe Shinzō's 2018 labour reforms. The Court's interpretations reaffirmed employer discretion in categorising employees as a reasonable principle, albeit one which limits the law's power to redress wage inequality. However, the Court also found the non-provision of various minor benefits to be unreasonable. These outcomes evince a pattern in which litigation marginally transforms reformed labour policy into institutional support for greater equality of compensation and benefits between workers of different statuses. More than advancing equal pay for equal work, the outcomes of these cases support recent government-industry campaigns to boost productivity by encouraging increased use of job-based treatment and diversifying Japan's employment system. Researchers have long assumed that a high proportion of creative members in a team is associated with high team innovative performance. This study proposed that the relationship between the proportion of creative members in a research and development (R&D) team and the team's innovative performance is an inverted U-shape. Using a sample of 120 R&D teams with time-lagged and multiple-source data, we found support for this argument. Furthermore, we theorized that the human resource management practices of participative management and pay dispersion moderate that U-shaped curvilinear relationship. Our data show that the curvilinear relationship holds when high participative management was implemented and when pay dispersion is high. We derive implications for management theory and practice. Prime Minister Kishida's 'unprecedented' measures to counter declining births in Japan include increasing youth incomes, extending childcare leave entitlement and employee social insurance entitlement to precarious workers, and targeting 50% of fathers to take childcare leave by 2025 by increasing the childcare allowance to 80% of salary. He also proposed reskilling opportunities, and mandating firms to disclose their gender wage gap and gender managerial gap. However, reform should also make fundamental changes to Japanese employment practices and the Employee Social Insurance Scheme which is based on a breadwinner-housewife model. Unless the government explicitly moves towards a worker-carer model, the gender wage gap will stay high, and hinder marriage and births, since double income is seen as a must among younger generation. We examine whether pay differentials between the chief executive officer (CEO) and vice presidents (VPs) can be explained by firms' strategic priorities. We find that firms that pursue prospector-type strategies have a larger CEO−VP difference in equity compensation. We argue that such a pay differential relates to the relative authority that CEOs have in strategic decision-making, and we find that authority allocation based on a firm's strategic priorities is consistent with the relative ability of the CEO vis-à-vis the VPs. Our results remain consistent after considering alternative explanations including CEO power, risk-taking incentives, and tournament incentives among VPs. Further analyses reveal that a large CEO−VP equity pay differential enhances firm value for prospector-type firms, and that shareholders and proxy advisors tend to incorporate firm strategy in their say-on-pay votes and proxy recommendations. Using the Canadians Censuses of 2001, 2006, 2016, and the National Household Survey of 2011, this article compares intra-household specialization patterns of married and cohabiting couples by gender composition of households. Household specialization is operationalized in several ways. The first set of measures captures the earnings differentials between spouses, while the second set of measures relies on labour supply. In line with previous studies, we often find a lower level of intra-household specialization for both male-male and female-female couples, compared with their heterosexual counterparts. However, the difference with heterosexuals is much larger for female-female couples. When the most recent dataset is split by income level, it appears that the specialization gaps are largely driven by the more affluent households. This article examines the effect of the inefficient allocation of academic individuals in the Israeli labour market in terms of mismatch between their fields of education and occupation – a phenomenon known as horizontal mismatch – on individual wage levels. The average annual income among horizontally mismatched academics was found to be significantly lower than the average annual income among horizontally matched academics. This article examines the gender wage gap in Israel – almost the highest gap among OECD countries in 2021. Using the PIAAC data to estimate wage equations and the wage gap, it shows that the main explanations for the gap are the difference in working hours between males and females, as well as differences in numeracy skills and the use of these skills at work. It concludes that public policy for narrowing the wage gap must include actions to encourage females to take full-time jobs and to encourage girls at school to take more advanced STEM courses. Using a nationally representative dataset extracted from the Jordanian Labor Market Panel Survey (JLMPS) for the two years 2010 and 2016, we apply both the standard Oaxaca–Blinder and quantile decomposition approaches to provide a more comprehensive distributional analysis of the native-immigrant wage differentials in Jordan over the period 2010–2016. By assessing the contribution of a rich set of labor market characteristics to the distributional wage differentials between the two groups and examining the extent to which such differentials reflect marginalization and discrimination against non-natives in Jordan, we find some interesting results that may hold significant policy implications for policymakers and labor market participants. These results reveal an increase in the mean native-immigrant wage gap over time and a relative intensification, throughout the wage distribution, of discrimination against immigrants among middle-wage workers. This study evaluated the effect of explicit rules that permitted the appropriation by temporal primacy or disuse in a situation with common resources, individual consequences, and differential exchange of earnings on the resource appropriation patterns. The experimental situation involves a typical structure of a non-renewable common resource dilemma. Twenty-four university students were randomly distributed into three experimental groups of four dyads exposed to two experimental conditions: with or without explicit rules. Participants worked on the same task but in different experimental cubicles without the possibility of establishing verbal exchanges. The cubicles enabled participants to be visually and verbally isolated from each other. However, they could observe their peers' performance and take one or more resources to solve the task, obtaining differential earnings for their performance. Task points were exchanged for tangible prizes. Findings suggest that authorizing a specific mode of appropriation affects interindividual behavior patterns in appropriation. The temporal primacy rule favored the immediate depletion of resources and their accumulation. Instead, the disuse rule promoted delayed consumption and less accumulation. The teacher shortage is a critical issue in many rural areas around the world. This paper presents the findings of two studies that investigated the impact of financial incentives on teacher attraction and retention in rural schools in Western China. Using the theory of compensating wage differentials and a mixed-method approach, we found that providing living subsidies to student-teachers has an impact on teacher attraction but not retention, while tuition fee and loan reimbursements have a positive impact on both attraction and retention. For teachers already teaching in rural schools, the amount of the living subsidy, satisfaction with the policy, and identification of the policy are the key factors that affect the success of the policy. We argue that for the subsidy amount to be effective, it should be based on feedback from rural teachers and be at least 15% of their monthly salary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the relationship between occupational feminization and wages in Thailand using the Thailand Labor Force Survey data (LFS) (2008-2017). Employing the Augmented Inverse Probability Weighting (AIPW) and the Inverse Probability Weighted Regression Adjustment (IPWRA) double robust matching techniques, this study investigates the effects of occupational feminization and the interaction effect of occupational feminization and gender on wages. The findings indicate that occupational feminization decreased wages in Thailand, and the negative effect weakened over time. While the gender wage gap persisted in feminized occupations over the years, there was a reduction in the gender wage gap in non-feminized occupations. The wage gap between females in feminized occupations and males in non-feminized occupations decreased over time, even though it remained larger than the overall gender wage gap. This study delves into the multifaceted issue of inequality in Turkey, analyzing overall and regional disparities as well as wage and gender inequalities in the labor market. Through the lens of the Big Mac Index, we investigate purchasing power and discover a decrease in regional inequality between 2002 and 2020. However, our research findings indicate a widening income gap between capital owners or the working rich and workers, particularly evident after 2015. Moreover, the wage gap between male and female white-collar workers has widened since the 2018 currency crisis, while the gap between male and female blue-collar workers has shown improvement. According to the Pigouvian approach, utility (or satisfaction) is positively affected by income level. A higher income allows for more tangible goods and intangible services, thereby 'elevating' individuals' happiness. This article departs from the traditional Pigouvian approach and implements concepts found in ancient religious and historical sources. Accordingly, individuals' well-being or utility are affected not only by income but also by the gap between fulfilment and desire that is derived from individuals' income. Benin has witnessed significant economic growth over the past decades, positioning itself as a rising economy in the west African subregion. This notwithstanding, persistent subnational differences in poverty were observed, suggesting a challenge of growth inclusiveness. This study provides evidence on the effects of human capital differences, isolation, and institutional quality on the determinants of household expenditure and factors that explain the southern-northern welfare gaps. This study employs a decomposition technique based on re-centred influence functions. I find significant spatial differences in consumption expenditure at the mean and across selected quantiles, with an increasing gap along welfare distribution and driven largely by differences in the returns to households' endowments in social public infrastructure. Access to energy and human capital measured by the education level of the head of the household generally favours the rich in the leading region and contributed significantly to explaining the difference in the welfare gap. The difference in access to roads widens the gap for the poor, whereas governance quality at the local level reduces it. To reduce the poverty gap, a public policy to improve returns of household endowments in the social sector should be integrated with other initiatives to address the underlying determinants of inequalities. In this paper, we apply a feminist interpretation and an extension of Bourdieu's theory of practice to explore the gap in our understanding between gender gap issues – the institutionalized and structural inequalities that underpin the differential access to resources by women and men – and women business owners. Drawing on an interpretivist analysis of the lived experience of women entrepreneurs who were members of women-only or open-to-all formal entrepreneurship networks, we examine their enculturation and the strategies they employ to be deemed credible players in the field. We conclude that women-only formal entrepreneurship networks have had a limited impact on helping these women overcome the isolating and individualizing effects of a gendered entrepreneurial field. Despite the promise of familiarization with and sensitization to the field, women-only formal entrepreneurship networks only serve to perpetuate and reproduce the embedded masculinity of the entrepreneurship domain in the absence of appropriate activating mechanisms or 'margins of intervention'. This paper examines the interplay between the female labour supply and wages through human capital accumulation in South Korea, highlighting the significant gender wage gap and low female labor participation. Our findings suggest that wage subsidies alone are insufficient for narrowing the gender wage gap. Targeted wage subsidies for households with infants and toddlers can mitigate career interruptions and enhance human capital for women. However, it also attracts lower-productivity women into the labor market, further exacerbating the gender wage gap. Labour studies in the African colonial period are facing a revival, but literature on the role and working conditions of children remains over-generalized. At the same time, child labour has played a central role in economic activities in Africa, and it still does. This article contributes to filling this gap by studying Portuguese colonial Africa as a narrative of tension between labour market forces, public policy, and (limited) agency of children. Labour scarcity facing demand hikes contributed to the increased use of children for labour in the colonial period. We contribute to the history of African labour by compiling data on the – until now – largely neglected use of child labour in mining and agriculture in the Portuguese African colonies. We find children were used to support adults or, with less agency, simply replaced (often forced) adult labour in plantations, mining, and other activities abandoned by adults. (Promised) wage differentials, taxes, forced labour, pass systems, and forced cultivation schemes acted as (dis)incentives to labour migration. This paper examines the cross-national transfer of HRM practices at Up Group, an emblematic French multinational worker co-op. Our findings reveal that stakeholder pressure to disseminate the co-op's core HRM practices to its foreign subsidiaries triggered two key strategic responses from the HQ member-owners: transfer circumvention and ceremonial transfer. Therefore, our study provides new insights into the political and contested nature of practice transfer by elucidating how MNCs actively engage in the selective and differential transfer of some of their core HRM practices to protect the HQ actors' interests and preserve their position of power vis-à-vis the subsidiaries. In addition, our fine-grained analysis of the ceremonially transferred practices contributes to the literature on practice variation during diffusion processes in MNCs. Finally, by examining the challenges of the cross-national management of people in multinational worker co-ops, an increasingly important global player, this study addresses critical management scholars' calls to broaden the horizons of IHRM research beyond the hegemonic analysis of for-profit shareholder-owned MNCs. The relation between equity and efficiency remains at the heart of regional policy. This study captures the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic government responses on the above-mentioned relation. To do so, we employ cross-sectional data from US states for 2020 and a spatial econometric model specification in the context of Corona policy effects. We find an inverted-'U' relationship between inequality and efficiency. Additionally, the effect of the intensity of government responses to COVID-19 on the equity–efficiency relation depends on the state's per capita gross domestic product (GDP) levels. This paper contributes to the literature on the drivers of export diversification by tackling an issue that has received scant attention in this literature, that is, the effect of women empowerment on export product diversification in developing countries. The analysis focuses on a sample of 106 developing countries covering the period 2002–2018. The results suggest that women's political empowerment and gender parity in secondary school enrolment have a positive effect on export diversification. On the contrary, gender vulnerable employment inequality and gender wage inequality have a negative effect on diversification. Growth is closely related to structural transformation, the reallocation of economic activity among sectors. A well-functioning labor market plays an important role in this process by enabling workers to find employment in the growing, more productive sectors. We review the literature on labor market frictions that limit worker flows, slow structural transformation, and trap workers in poverty. The three main areas of focus are the extent of sectoral wage gaps, labor market dynamics, and evidence on specific frictions. Evidence in each area points to the presence of frictions that hinder worker reallocation. The literature also suggests policies that may help remediate frictions and improve worker mobility. We provide first evidence of the impact of over-education, among natives and immigrants, on firm-level productivity and wages. Our results show that the over-education wage premium is higher for natives than for immigrants. However, since the differential in productivity gains associated with over-education outweighs the corresponding wage premium differential, we conclude that over-educated native workers are in fact underpaid to a greater extent than their over-educated immigrant counterparts. A definition of essential industries based on recent federal government guidelines is used to trace out the trajectory of wages for essential and nonessential sectors over time in the United States. This retrospective approach is justified by the fact that the included industries provide goods and services that are essential to health and safety whether or not emergency conditions exist. Union density has been consistently higher in essential industries, but the percentage of nonunionized workers has also increased more rapidly in those industries. The data show that real wages in essential industries have declined relative to nonessential industries since 1983 and that essential industries have consistently had lower levels of wage inequality than their nonessential counterparts. Regression analyses suggest that uneven de-unionization can explain part of the decline in relative wages. Furthermore, higher rates of union coverage in essential industries likely contribute to their comparatively low levels of wage inequality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most of the studies of wage discrimination in Bangladesh have calculated the gap between pairs of sectors, while this study uses multiple sectors using multinomial logit estimation where the sector selection is endogenous. The employment sector is divided into six heterogeneous sectors depending on ownership status. Using QLFS 2016–2017 data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, the probability of being employed in a certain sector is initially estimated by the sector choice equation, and then we estimate both the conditional and unconditional wage gaps between government and other sectors. The estimation result of the sector choice shows that the probability of being included in the government sector mostly depends on educational qualification, and the rural population is mostly included in marginal sectors like individual proprietorship. The decomposition of wage discrimination indicates that government employees have a wage advantage over every other sector, except for females. The decomposition result also suggests that the wage gap is mostly driven by discrimination, with NGOs showing the most discrimination in wages offered, followed by the individual sector. The different life paths of the generation following immigration have become a matter of public discussion and scholarly research in the past decades in many migrant-receiving countries. These differences would be key points for the immigration decision made by first-generation immigrants. This paper adopts a new perspective to study the differences in task supplies and economic status between natives and two generations of immigrants to see their different life paths. This paper estimates differences in task supply and earnings between natives and immigrants in 1970 and 2015, which are the beginning and end of the fifth (and current) wave of immigration to Canada. Furthermore, using a three-fold Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition, I link the average weekly wage of workers to their task productivity, and try to find the effects of the returns to tasks as well as different task supplies on the average wage gap between natives and immigrants. Finally, I use ordered probit and logit models to demonstrate and measure the significant effects of immigrant status on an employee's labour market segment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Social inequality has long been an important topic of public debate in almost all societies in the world, but how much do people actually disagree and who is that does? This paper uses all five waves of International Social Survey Programme data (1987 to 2019) to compare attitudes toward "fair" pay ratios in Germany, Italy, Hungary, Norway, Great Britain, the USA, and Russia. Although respondents generally underestimate the actual size of current earnings gaps, in all countries an overwhelming egalitarian majority agrees that "income differences are too large". As well, since the ISSP has also asked respondents how much different occupations "should earn", one can compare the fair pay ratios. In all countries, for all years examined, fair pay ratios are (a) remarkably small and (b) remarkably similar for roughly 80% of the population. Cross-country differences in average attitudes do not occur due to higher general levels of support for income inequality but are rather concentrated in the "inegalitarian few". Our analysis of cross-country differences in attitudes toward inequality, therefore, concentrates on how the inegalitarian few differ from the egalitarian many, to differing degrees in different countries, to better explain the political tensions underlying differences in redistribution in market economies. This study investigates whether the completion of an optional 'sandwich' work placement enhances graduate starting salaries. We use a variety of multivariate regression techniques to investigate this issue and find that the graduate starting salaries of students who took professional work placements were significantly higher by £1686 ($2105) compared to non-placement students. We make a methodological contribution to the literature by controlling for self-selection bias. That is, our analysis takes into consideration that certain students self-select in to work placements and that they would have had higher starting salaries regardless of whether choosing to take a work placement. Additional insights showed that placements may be detrimental in terms of alleviating class and gender pay inequality but may have helped to reduce ethnic pay inequality. Studies of doctors' life satisfaction (subjective well-being) have largely overlooked the specific experiences of international or overseas trained doctors. This study explores any difference in life satisfaction and its determinants between international and domestic medical graduates (i.e. IMGs vs. DMGs), in Australia (a major destination country). We pooled eight waves of data from the Medicine in Australia: Balancing Employment and Life (MABEL) longitudinal survey of Australian doctors (2009–2016). Life satisfaction was measured on a standard 10-point scale. We applied Oaxaca and Ransom's linear decomposition method to evaluate factors associated with any observed difference in satisfaction between the two groups of doctors. IMGs were more likely to report lower life satisfaction than DMGs (mean 7.37 vs 7.48, p-value < 0.001). The well-being gap (of 0.11) was largely attributable to the groups' differences in observable characteristics such as psychosocial and demographic factors. Most notably, the IMG group was worse off with respect to self-reported financial security, exposure to work-related psychosocial risk factors, and community integration. Our study highlights the importance of the workplace and community context in understanding the life satisfaction difference between IMGs and DMGs. This article examines the relationship between types of employment and wages by gender and gender pay gaps among permanent, temporary, and informal workers. There are substantial gender inequalities in bargaining, and these inequalities are argued to be more prevalent for temporary and informal jobs. Hence, larger wage penalties for women in such positions are expected. Moreover, the inverse association between wages and non-permanent contracts is larger for low-paid women. To this end, the study employs unconditional quantile regression techniques and counterfactual decomposition analysis, and accounts for selection bias. The dataset is based on labor force surveys over the period 2005–19 in Turkey and focuses on private sector employees. The findings highlight the disproportionate impact of temporary and informal employment on women's earnings and suggest that employment type can be a contributing factor to the gender pay gap in Turkey, particularly for low wage groups. In Turkey, employment opportunities, social norms, and gender roles limit women's bargaining power. Gender inequalities in bargaining can vary significantly across employment types. This study extends recent research on the social determinants of the preferences for distributive disparities. We drew on a recent survey of more than 58,000 participants from 335 large cities in mainland China and measured pay differentials with a vignette experiment about allocating bonuses between two secretaries of different performance levels. Our ordinal regression models adjust for city-level random effects and exploit variation in early-age exposure to the incentives for educational competition across 840 admission district-by-cohort sample groups. Our results show that a higher incentive for long-term educational competition is associated with higher levels of legitimate pay differentials among all groups except the highest-status group, thereby narrowing the status gap. A stronger competitive intensity apparently fosters system justification among the majority lower-status groups but ostensibly does not affect legitimation among the top-status group. This heterogeneity in the effect is (a) unconfounded by personal income rank, provincial gross domestic product, local wealth inequality, and opportunity for college enrollment; and (b) robust to alternative measures of incentives for competition, subdivisions of status groups, nonparametric causal inference, and weighting for sample representativeness. A well-known stylized fact about the US labour market is the behaviour of the female-to-male unemployment gap over the business cycle – in downturns, female unemployment rises at a slower pace than male unemployment, which reduces the gap between the genders; in upturns, the reverse is observed: men's unemployment falls faster than women's, thus rendering the gap pro-cyclical. In this paper, we model the labour market under a Diamond-Mortensen-Pissarides framework where the labour supply consists of women and men, who differ in their equilibrium (Nash) bargaining agreement over the match's surplus. We show that, in the presence of such asymmetry, a negative aggregate productivity shock leads to a pro-cyclical female-to-male unemployment rate gap. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sharing economy platforms present a unique work opportunity for service providers seeking freedom and flexibility, yet discrepancies in earnings between genders are found to persist. Extracting data from over 8,000 service providers on Airbnb, we reveal that males generate higher earnings than females for comparable accommodations. This discrepancy is attributed to three factors revealing that male vs. female hosts are more likely to: set higher prices, generate more stays, and accommodate a greater number of guests per stay. Female entrepreneurs in Central Asia contribute to economic development through their business establishment and workplace creation for others. Research shows that the motivation of women to start a business differs based on time and place-specific factors. Extant studies argue that women in developing economies opt for entrepreneurship because of push factors such as economic necessity and the need for a work-home balance. In contrast, women in advanced economies choose to be self-employed due to pull factors such as the need for self-actualization and independence. This study proposes a conceptual model to understand female entrepreneurial leadership in Kazakhstan by exploring the perceptions and experiences of women entrepreneurs within their leadership roles. It adopted Stewart's model of role demands-constraints-choices (DCC) to understand their perceptions of the demands, constraints, and choices they experience within their leadership roles, exploring the main drivers for Kazakhstani women's business establishment decisions addressing an existing knowledge gap on entrepreneurial leadership by aggregating three critical constructs of gender, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Based on semi-structured interviews, this study finds that Kazakhstani women start a business to earn an income, feed their children, and provide better living conditions. The findings also indicate that the case of women entrepreneurs' motivation in Kazakhstan is distinct from existing literature on female entrepreneurs' motivation in Central Asia developing economies.
