Policy mobilities research has explored how policies—particularly urban development policies—spread among sites around the world, mutate along the way, and take hold in distinct contexts. Within the policy mobilities literature, there is particular attention to circulatory infrastructures, which facilitate encounters, learning, and exchange of knowledge that support the (re)production and movement of policies and "best practices." Policy mobilities scholarship thus understands policy implementation as emerging from relational assemblages of myriad actors and social processes. Drawing on assemblage theory, this work has been attentive to nonhuman objects and infrastructures, nonetheless it has given little attention to nonhuman life. This article draws on more-than-human geographies, particularly emerging work on nonhuman life and infrastructures, to incorporate nonhuman actors into an understanding of policy mobilization. We present a case study of suburban wildlife management programs in Massachusetts and discuss how human–nonhuman relationships undergird policy development, transfer, and change. Drawing insights from municipal surveys, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, we argue that nonhumans are active in the production of policy assemblages and the mobility of environmental policies. Deer, in particular, are lively actors entangled in the circulation of policies designed to manage social-ecological dynamics and processes that also include ticks, forests, bacteria, and many other nonhuman agents. Through this intervention to situate nonhuman life in policy mobilities, we highlight the political agency of nonhuman actors, the materialities of policy mobilization, and the role of nonhumans in shaping relational networks. In Europe, spatial distributions and densities of ungulates have been increasing, triggering both negative and positive feelings. Ecosystem-based and collaborative approaches to wildlife management have been introduced to, among other things, consider the perspectives of the local public. Consequently, it becomes necessary to understand the public's emotional appraisals and feelings toward the presence of moose and other ungulates. We studied four socio-ecological contexts in Sweden. Statistical analyses of a postal questionnaire (N = 1111) showed that negative feelings were weak and positive feelings were modest across all settings. In particular, wildlife value orientation of mutualism and perceptions of moose and other ungulates as supporting recreation opportunities sustained positive feelings. Currently there seems to be little need among the public to cope with negative implications of ungulates. Management may benefit from informing about adequate strategies and building social trust if negative impacts of ungulates were to become salient to the public. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the potential for wildlife habitat and public recreation on private lands in Ohio. Private land accounts for 80% of wildlife habitat in the United States and is relied upon by 85% of hunters. The study surveyed landowners in the Scioto watershed to assess their preferences for conservation and recreation on their land. The results showed that there were differences in the species seen on CREP (Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program) land compared to other watershed land, and that CREP landowners were less likely to allow public recreation on their land. The article suggests that long-term maintenance and additional interventions may be necessary to ensure continued access to private lands for conservation and recreation. Government agencies and landowners use a variety of lethal methods to reduce invasive wild pig populations and resulting agricultural damages. To provide decision-makers with information regarding Alabama farmers' experiences with wild pigs and their preferences for management actions, we surveyed Alabama Farmers Federation members in 2020. We found that wild pigs were commonly present on livestock, timber, and crop production acreage, but wild pig damages and costs were much more common among crop producers. Respondents' wildlife acceptance capacity for wild pigs was low and all lethal control methods were considered acceptable by most respondents, particularly those performed by landowners. While there is likely a consensus among Alabama farmers that wild pig numbers need to be reduced within the state, managers should continue to build support by working closely with crop producers and by addressing potential concerns regarding the implementation of methods by government agencies in future initiatives and outreach. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a neurodegenerative disease that threatens deer population health and management. This qualitative study explored processors' perception of CWD risks, and the solutions or barriers they experience regarding managing these risks. Processors can play a critical role preventing consumption of CWD-positive venison by keeping CWD-positive deer out of facilities and implementing practices that minimize the risk of cross-contamination should CWD-positive deer enter facilities. Our analysis of semi-structured interviews of wild game processors found that they are concerned about CWD but have not altered processing practices, believing that most of the responsibilities for preventing CWD spread lie with hunters. Processors suggested several practices that state regulatory agencies can implement to aid in efforts to ensure that no CWD-positive deer enter facilities. This research may inform state agencies' CWD communication efforts and identify actionable policies that better ensure processors can help prevent the consumption of CWD-positive venison. This empirical study investigates how "gender is done" within Swedish wildlife management by identifying prevailing gender norms, and how gender norms can be challenged from a norm-critical perspective, in order to promote women's participation. The basis for the study is an ongoing evaluation of the Swedish Hunters' Association training initiative to increase women's participation in moose management groups. Three main norm categories are identified: performance; social interaction; and hunting as a lifestyle. Recommendations for continued gender equality work include active leadership in gender equality issues, a review of potentially excluding structures, promoting female mentors and networks, and the use of formal and transparent recruitment procedures. An understanding of norms affecting women's participation (or nonparticipation) in wildlife management is fundamental to design effective training, recruitment and nomination strategies in the future. Governmental natural resource entities often use surveys to gather information from the public about wildlife management and conservation policies. Response rate is a metric for understanding how many individuals participate in a survey. Higher response rates can reduce costs and sampling effort and improve the reliability and generalizability of survey findings. However, response rates may be negatively influenced by a distrust in government. Our study evaluated if response rates would differ based on the survey sponsor. We sent a survey to hunters in Georgia, USA that contained either university or governmental agency branding. Response rates did not differ among the two surveys and sentiment analysis of open-ended responses revealed that sentiments of respondents were similar between groups. Although these results suggest branding might not have major impacts on responses, further investigation is needed to determine the effect of sponsorship and other influential factors that both enhance and diminish response rates. AbstractTo protect wild deer populations (and their beneficiaries) from the negative consequences of chronic wasting disease (CWD), it is crucial to engage deer hunters in disease prevention. Early qualitative findings suggest CWD-relevant behaviors evoke moral or ethical considerations in deer hunters which may help to explain behaviors. The present study applies norm-activation theory (NAT) to explore the relationship between personal norms and CWD-preventative behavioral intentions. We surveyed 2,000 New York, USA residents licensed to hunt in the bordering CWD-positive state of Pennsylvania, USA, and find most hunters have activated personal norms to help prevent a CWD (re)introduction to New York. We find as perceived effectiveness of the behaviors (in helping to prevent CWD) increases, the odds of activated personal norms increase, as do intentions to perform the behaviors. Our findings offer insights into deer hunter involvement in CWD prevention and the potential influence of internal motivation on the respective behaviors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human activities, including the movement of harvested cervids, pose significant risks for spreading chronic wasting disease (CWD) to new locations. This study used hierarchical agglomerative clustering to compare Minnesota, USA hunters' carcass disposal habits and likelihood of CWD testing as a function of individual differences in risk perceptions and hunting area. We utilized a survey of Minnesota hunters conducted during Spring 2020 that included a random sample of individuals that hunt statewide and in a local disease management zone (N = 5,000, response rate = 33%). We did not detect a significant difference in disposal behaviors as a function of CWD risk perceptions, but rather because of increased accessibility of low-risk disposal methods. Conversely, we found perceived likelihood of conducting CWD testing was positively associated with perceptions of risk. These findings have implications for vector tracing for future CWD outbreaks and highlight the benefit of understanding constituent habits and regulation compliance in disease management. Referees face various challenges in officiating games as there is no consensus on the complexity of tasks and the approaches that guarantee optimum performance. Most researchers and sports administrators agree that the best way to cope with these challenges is consistent decision making and efficient communication with the players. This holistic approach to refereeing is referred to as game management. However, existing models only give few insights into how referees can utilise game management. This paper introduces a decision-flow model that explains the different stages a referee must consider when implementing game management, namely the fast, intuitive decision in-game, the deliberate evaluation of this decision, and the chosen compensation if the evaluation regards the decision as an error. We argue that compensations need to be implemented differently depending on the severity of misjudgement and its impact on the game. Furthermore, we conclude that our decision-flow model applies to every decision that a referee makes when applying game management. Therefore, optimum game management is a continuous evaluation and compensation process in which the judgment scale is adjusted based on the evaluation of the previous decision. In urban and suburban areas, the complex socio-environmental landscapes and diverging interests of stakeholders make wildlife management difficult. We analyze how municipalities in Massachusetts make decisions about the management of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Combining statistical analyses of a survey of municipal officials, qualitative analysis of management documents, and semi-structured interviews, we investigate (i) the socio-environmental conditions linked to municipal concerns about deer, (ii) the concerns that prompt municipalities to explore deer management actions, and (iii) why some municipalities take management action while others do not. We find that landscape features, Lyme disease incidence, and an array of concerns about deer prompt municipal governments to explore options for deer management. We show that management champions and small-scale politics are crucial in translating concern to management action. Our study illustrates the complexity of wildlife decision-making in sub/urban environments where the movement of wild animals intersects with patterns of development and politics. Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM), which is aimed at ensuring meaningful participation of rural communities in decision-making and promoting sustainable utilisation of natural resources, has been criticised for excluding local communities from decision-making. Using the concept of social exclusion and a qualitative approach, the study's main objective was to analyse the exclusion faced by the minority Doma ethnic group in the Communal Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources (CAMPFIRE) programme in northern Zimbabwe. Findings showed that the Doma were excluded from decision-making related to wildlife management by powerful stakeholders, who included political elites, local authority officials, government conservation authorities, and the safari operator. The crux of this exclusion revolved around the large differences between their livelihood practices and those of the other stakeholders, their low-status position and peripheral location. Emotions pervade human-wildlife relationships across social identities and cultures. Yet research on how emotions influence the cognitive processing of wildlife encounters remains sparse. In this study, we quantify the role of anticipated emotions in processing hypothetical encounters with white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). In 2021, we surveyed Indiana residents about deer and deer management (n = 1.806). Under four hypothetical deer encounters, we estimated the structural relationships among respondents' general attitudes toward deer, mutualism wildlife beliefs, scenario-specific emotions, and scenario-specific lethal control acceptability. Emotions mediated 14% of the effect of general attitudes on lethal control acceptability when encountering a fawn and completely mediated this effect when encountering a diseased deer. Our findings suggest that emotions work together with cognitions to process stimuli in a human-wildlife encounter and make a normative decision. Accounting for emotions in decision-making will help practitioners develop more effective and socially accepted approaches to wildlife conservation and management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Invasive species pose a threat to biodiversity, and as such feature in some conservation education programs. However, there is debate about how to teach this difficult subject. We explored perspectives using a case study of education about introduced mammalian predators in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ). We conducted semi-structured interviews with 18 NZ educators and animal welfare advocates and supplemented these data with material from a broader project on predator control in NZ. Our data indicated agreement that education should: 1) encourage respect for all animals, i.e., introduced predators should not be demonized and must be killed humanely; 2) enable children to develop their own opinions, e.g., whether to participate in trapping; and 3) designing programs to suit specific contexts, e.g., rural versus urban. However, there were disagreements, for example at what age children might begin trapping, and whether guiding students toward a particular conclusion is compatible with enabling their agency. Wildlife management across Europe is increasingly characterised by a ‘war on wild boar’. In response to epidemiological and economic threats to pig production and agriculture, state agencies, policymakers and hunting organizations have altered their management as they attempt to contain wild boar. Through a cross-section overview of eight European countries with differentiated strategies – the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Norway, Poland, Spain, and Sweden – we analyze five critical components of contemporary wild boar management: categorizing, responsibilizing, calculating, controlling, and sanitizing. We consider three critical triggers that change how wild boar and, by extension, a range of other ‘wild’ species are managed in relation to the aforementioned categories: (over)abundance and population growth, biosecurity crises, and technological innovation. While these triggers, on one hand, might streamline transborder management policies, we show how wild boar also uproot longstanding wildlife management cultures by transforming hunting traditions, landowner-hunter relations and meat handling practices. Bear management in New Jersey is controversial. The Division of Fish and Wildlife's policies have not reassured factions who oppose their tools, namely hunting, despite being informed by science. This study applies qualitative content analysis to 43 policy documents to understand how actors pursue policy objectives, and how they are shaped. I find that actors pursue their policy objectives by making hybrid arguments that, in addition to science, involve history, values, and institutional power. Thus, they make scientific claims—or claims to what the science might mean—that are incompatible with each other. This study identifies four ways in which this occurs: science gets framed, science gets applied to certain ends, science gets weaponized, and science gets minimized. Comprehending the ways in which these factors supplement and frame science could reduce conflict, improve communication, and build consensus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Managing wildlife diseases is a constant challenge in wildlife management and may require increasing attention as climate change increases the range, spread, and transmission cycles of some of these diseases in North America. The present study quantified hunters' compliance with chronic wasting disease (CWD) risk-reduction practices across 26 deer management units (DMUs) in Ohio. We assessed self-reported, typical deer processing behaviors among hunters who reported hunting in and near the Disease Surveillance Area (DSA). Results indicate that noncompliance with deer processing recommendations was considerably higher in the DMU encompassing the DSA. Addressing noncompliance will likely require locally focused communication and outreach centered on the risk of CWD in the area. Communication that highlights the wider prevailing norms of the following recommendations (60–70% of Ohio hunters either take their deer to a processor or put unused parts in the trash or landfill) may influence behavior change, especially in combination with more tailored, culturally driven outreach. The size and complexity of spatial data in conservation science has been increasing dramatically as new tracking and monitoring technology has become more advanced and accessible. While the resulting high-resolution datasets have the potential to advance conservation science, new approaches in data management, analysis, and visualization are needed to realize time-sensitive on the-ground applications. Geovisual analytics (GVA) presents a novel approach to supporting interdisciplinary groups of conservation scientists, land managers, public and private stakeholders, and policymakers in thoughtful, timely, and data driven decision-making. The use of GVA in conservation science has emerged in the past decade, however its potential applications are under-explored and existing research is dispersed. Here we present a cross-disciplinary review of literature on the use of GVA in conservation science. Three key themes emerged: GVA as a decision support tool for land and wildlife management, movement analysis and/or monitoring of species and their potential threats, and GVA for tracking environmental condition and progress toward conservation goals. We then categorize existing GVA applications across both landscape and wildlife applications. This study focuses on wildlife management in the Loliondo Game Controlled Area (LGCA) in the northern region of Tanzania. There are ongoing concerns surrounding wildlife management in the LGCA including an acute lack of community involvement in the wildlife management planning and decision-making process, poorly defined property rights, and the unequitable distribution of the economic benefits generated from the ecotourism and trophy hunting schemes being implemented. Employing multi-criteria analysis techniques, this study explores and evaluates the alternative wildlife management options for the wildlife tourism site at issue. The joint venture wildlife management option has been identified as the most preferable. Under a joint venture wildlife management scheme, trophy hunting and ecotourism is allowed in the area designated for conservation, while livestock grazing, agriculture, and village settlements are permitted in the remaining area of the LGCA. Under this scheme, a community-based organization (CBO) is granted user rights to wildlife and other natural resources in the conservation area. A joint venture programme is established between commercial investors and a CBO. The study argues that joint venture wildlife management should be introduced to ensure well-defined property rights, implement efficient wildlife conservation, and the equitable share of economic benefits across the various stakeholders. The heuristic-systematic model (HSM) suggests that when presented with a choice, individuals will use either heuristic or systematic processing modes to arrive at a judgment. In this paper, we evaluate the HSM model in the context of hunter perceptions toward chronic wasting disease (CWD), a neurological disease found in members of the family Cervidae that threatens the health of cervid populations and the flow of benefits humans derive from them. Data were obtained from surveys of hunters who harvested inside (N = 1500) and outside (N = 3500) of Disease Management Areas (DMAs) across the state of Minnesota with an overall response rate of ∼33%. Results suggested that self-efficacy and information sufficiency were associated with heuristic processing, while motivation was associated with systematic processing. Heuristic processing was associated with lower levels of perceived risk than systematic processing. This study utilises qualitative methods to explore the behaviours of rugby union referees in order to inform the development of a pedagogical tool that can be used to develop communication of rugby union referees. Effective communication is a critical part of a rugby union referee's performance, yet there is a dearth of literature surrounding this area of rugby union referee development. Participants included professional IRFU referees (n = 6) with experience both at domestic league levels as well as at an international level. Audio footage from professional games (n = 18) was analysed and transcribed verbatim. Raw quotes were categorised as meaning units and a total of nine communicative behaviours were devised: (1) Preventative Instruction, (2) Command, (3) Explanation, (4) Organisational, (5) Acknowledgement, (6) Game Management, (7) Informative, and (8) Consultation. Results reveal various types of key communicative behaviours employed by rugby union referees throughout a game, depending on the situation presented in front of them. The findings of this study reveal the importance of selecting the most effective type of communication in any given situation. Uncovering such behaviours will enhance the development and assessment of rugby union communication skills through a pedagogical framework in order to improve on-field performance. The concept of mating systems refers to all the strategies through which animals interact in the context of breeding. Animal social interactions, and consequently their mating strategies, are strongly influenced by landscape configuration, including anthropogenic habitat fragmentation. Despite this holding the potential to impact both genetic viability and animal behaviour, an updated and comprehensive review on its effects on mating systems is lacking, as an exhaustive understanding of the underlying processes. Thus, we reviewed the literature concerning the influence of habitat fragmentation on mating systems of tetrapods and on processes associated with breeding. We underlined the unfortunate biases present in literature (e.g., most studies on birds and mammals, none on amphibians) and showed the changes possibly led by living in discontinuous habitats for each class of terrestrial vertebrates (i.e., mammals, birds, and reptiles). In fragmented patches of habitats, resource distribution gets altered; consequently, space occupancy may change and affect how animals interact, leading to variable potential for monogamous/polygamous mating systems compared to continuous populations. We discussed how dispersal and indirectly the population sex ratio can be altered in such populations, and further considered changes in social behaviour, specifically in interactions between kin individuals with increasing relatedness in smaller and isolated patches. More typical of bird populations are changes in mating-related phenomena such as pairing success, extra-pair paternity (EPP) rate, and nest parasitism, together with shifts from mating strategies (e.g., lekking behaviour). Although no univocal response to habitat parcelling was found, several complex and population-specific trends emerge in the literature. We suggest a multidisciplinary approach to implement research in this direction, especially to evaluate the adaptive nature of such responses. Ultimately, we underline the urgent need of taking into consideration behavioural responses in wildlife management interventions, particularly when dealing with species that may lack plasticity to adapt to landscape degradation. Botswana re-introduced trophy hunting in 2019. This generated a debate about the relevance of trophy hunting in achieving wildlife conservation and human well-being among wildlife stakeholders. The stakeholders include the Government of Botswana, local agro-pastoralists, photographic and trophy hunting tourism operators and anti-hunting groups. Stakeholders differ in opinion on the acceptability of trophy hunting as a socio-economic development and conservation tool. This paper, therefore, adopts the socio-ecological framework and uses Spivak's rhetoric question: "Can the Subaltern Speak", to analyse contradictions of trophy hunting, human well-being and wildlife conservation trajectory in Botswana. The study is qualitative and makes use of interviews and secondary data sources. The results indicate that the Government of Botswana and communities (agro-pastoralists) especially those residing in wildlife areas prefer both trophy hunting and photographic tourism as a strategy to derive tourism benefits and achieve wildlife conservation. Conversely, animal rights groups reject trophy hunting noting its failure to promote wildlife conservation. The paper concludes that the socio-ecological framework is the ideal guide for wildlife conservation and human well-being in wildlife areas. Disturbance due to tourism may impact the critically endangered population of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) in Iceland. Improved seal watching management is a promising strategy for seal conservation in Iceland. Previous research indicates that value orientation of tourists can predict acceptance of wildlife management and awareness of potential impacts of tourism on seals. The goal of this study was to (a) define biospheric and egoistic value orientation of seal watching visitors, (b) investigate how these values correlate with the opinion of visitors towards different management actions and awareness of potential impact of tourism on seals, and (c) investigate which management actions would be acceptable for visitors. Visitor questionnaires were distributed in NW Iceland (n = 597). Results show that seal watching visitors in general had high biospheric values, low egoistic values, and were open to most management actions suggested in the study. High biospheric values were correlated with acceptance of management actions and awareness of the usefulness of regulations. High egoistic values were correlated with low acceptance of management actions and low awareness of the impacts of seal watching. Nature-based tourism offers the opportunity for tourists to see first-hand both wildlife and the conservation efforts of organisations and individuals to protect habitats and species. Whilst recent studies hint that tourism can prompt visitors to provide philanthropic support for conservation, studies to-date have focused on behavioural intentions within specific case studies rather than actual behaviour, thereby limiting generalisability and explanatory scope. Consequently, little is known if and why individuals donate more after nature-based tourism. An online questionnaire, which included both quantitative and qualitive measures, explored key predictors of what triggers tourists to engage in philanthropic behaviour. Through a collaboration with two leading UK adventure travel companies, 924 participants' travel patterns and donation histories were examined to assess the role tourism plays in prompting new donations. Findings confirm, first, that travel to last chance destinations prompts higher instances of new philanthropy compared to other international and domestic trips; second, that other key factors, including the importance of stronger identity with nature and/or first-time visitation, influence new philanthropic support. Alongside the scholarly contributions, this study provides actionable guidance on how to encourage philanthropic behaviour working with both tour-operators and non-profit organisations. Research on animal ethics in tourism has gained traction but posthumanist approaches to wildlife (eco)tourism remain sparse. There has never been a more urgent need to redress this paucity in theory and practice. More than 60% of the world's wildlife has died-off in the last 50 years, 100 million-plus nonhuman animals are used for entertainment in wildlife tourist attractions (WTAs), more than one billion "wildlife" live in captivity, and some scholars argue that earth has entered its sixth mass extinction event known as the Anthropocene. This paper presents a posthumanist multispecies livelihoods framework (MLF) based on an applied ethnographic study of 47 wildlife ecotourism (WE) operators and wildlife researchers in protected area WTAs across four countries. Like any framework, it is a snapshot of the authors' thinking at a particular time and must be improved upon. The MLF does not purport to solve the negative treatment of nonhumans that can occur in tourism settings, but rather responds to calls in the tourism literature to acknowledge our effects on other species and advocates for equitable human-nonhuman livelihoods. This paper argues that we have a moral responsibility to nonhumans and the environment, and the authors hope to generate reflexive discourse concerning the role tourism can play in redressing the ecological crisis and improving the treatment of individual nonhumans to foster wildlife-human coexistence. An important sector of animal-based tourism is wildlife tourism, which includes a diverse base of attractions in captive, semi-captive and wild settings. We argue that actors (tourists, tourism operators, and academics) must have the prerequisite knowledge of animal welfare to assess animals' conditions in tourism settings. To this end, this paper has two aims. The first is to develop an animal welfare syllabus that should be used to teach students in higher learning institutions (who may ultimately work at animal attractions upon their graduation) as well as operators. The second aim is to mesh the papers in this special edition as case studies within the syllabus in making a case for an enhanced animal welfare educational tool for wildlife tourism. The scant existent literature on the link between wildlife tourism and consumption relies on case studies and does not directly measure attitudes towards wildlife tourism or consumption. This paper uses empirical survey data (N = 12,378) from 12 countries in Europe, Asia, and the Americas to examine the links between wildlife tourism and wildlife consumption, with a particular focus on evaluating forms of wildlife tourism typically considered "non-consumptive." The first set of analyses looked at the full sample and examined the relationships between wildlife tourism participation and (a) acceptability of wildlife consumption and (b) wildlife consumption behavior. The second set of analyses divided the sample by country and by location of the wildlife tourism activity (abroad or at home) and focused on the associations between participation in live animal encounters and wildlife consumption behavior. Models were built for two forms of wildlife consumption: eating/drinking wildlife and purchasing products/souvenirs made from animal parts. The results indicate that participation in entertainment-based live animal encounters is a strong correlate of increased wildlife consumption. Interpretation services provide environmental education at ecotourism destinations. This may prompt tourists' learning experiences (e.g., reflective engagement), which in turn may promote tourists' pro-environmental behavior. However, the way that interpretation services and reflective engagement affect ecotourism behavior remains unclear. The present study aimed to develop a theoretical model to assess the ecotourism behavioral framework of wildlife tourists. Using a systematic sampling approach, a total of 1,277 useful responses were obtained and analyzed. Structural equation modeling was analyzed with LISREL 8.80 for Windows, and all parameters were estimated through the maximum likelihood method. The analytical findings illustrated that interpretation services had a positive and significant direct relationship with reflective engagement, which in turn was positively and significantly related to the ecotourism behavioral intentions (including pro-environmental behavior, environmentally friendly behavior, adherence to ecotourism guidelines, site‐specific ecological behavior, and learning behavior) of wildlife tourists. This study confirmed that reflective engagement fully mediated the relationship between interpretation services and ecotourism behavior, extending the stimulus-organism-response theoretical framework to the wildlife tourism context. The managerial implications suggest that wildlife ecotourism programs should improve the quality of their interpretation services to increase reflective engagement, thereby enhancing wildlife ecotourism behavior during wildlife tours and assisting in the sustainable development of wildlife ecotourism. The article analyses how hunting tourism businesses in Sweden navigate in the nexus between moral and economic value spheres. Through the analytical lens of 'moral gatekeeper', the business operators are depicted as acting from a position where they navigate in a contested space. The analysis demonstrates how the operators balance different norms and practices of recreational hunting, wildlife management, business ethics and customer expectations. The study is based on ethnographic interviews with business operators, observations of hunting arrangements, and document analysis of hunting media, with a focus on narratives and accounts of value. The findings show a complex moral economy where stewardship hunting and gift economics are both intertwined with and kept separate from market relations, which makes the hunting arrangements, appear as a 'peculiar' form of commodity. The analysis demonstrates how moral arguments concerning wildlife management and human well-being are embedded in market relations and discourses on experiences, entailing seemingly opposite forms of commodification. One is related to calculable values, as in trophy hunting, and one is related to the embodied experience of nature. The study provides nuanced and contextual knowledge of the intertwinement of personal and market relationships in recreational hunting and the commodification of wildlife experiences. The recolonization of French forests by wolves is met with mixed feelings. While the spotlight is on predation of wolves on livestock, the potential benefit of the return of wolves has attracted less attention. Previous research has failed to assess the economic value of these benefits and focused only on the cost of predation. Our study proposes a modeling exercise to evaluate one of the services provided by wolves, namely, the reduction of collisions between wildlife and vehicles in France. We estimated that in 2018 the consumption of roe deer and wild boar by wolves saved between 2.4–7.8 million euros by preventing casualties and damage to property in road collisions. Offsetting this benefit with the costs of managing livestock predation could move the debate away from a simple clash between herders and environmentalists toward a more systemic approach and thus improve coexistence between wolves and humans. Changes in public values, beliefs, and expectations are leading to calls for transformational change in natural resource management agencies. Paradoxically, however, organizational features of management agencies condition them to seek stability rather than change. We evaluated quantitative data from 2012 to 2017 surveys of personnel and coded employee focus groups and individual interviews to evaluate an organizational change effort within a state wildlife agency (SWA). Results suggested that employees perceived increased positive changes and increased support from management for the change initiative, which contributed to greater personal commitment to the change initiative. No differences, however, were detected in other indicators of change in the culture, such as openness to new ideas, over the five-year period. Qualitative findings revealed specific drivers and barriers to change. We interpret these findings and provide recommendations to leaders in other SWAs who may be considering organizational change efforts. Following the COVID-19's outbreak in China, wildlife-related issues such as wildlife management and conservation made headlines around the world due to the potential zoonotic nature of the newly discovered coronavirus. In our study, we examined the dynamic interaction of the news agenda and public agenda concerning wildlife-related issues on social media after COVID-19's outbreak. Using big data analytics, we automatically extracted the agendas' attributes and networks from 110,549 social media posts made from January 1 to April 8, 2020, and investigated the effect of second- and third-level dynamic agenda setting in a time series analysis. Our findings suggest that the agenda-setting effect of wildlife-related issues on social media was not a single-step, unidirectional action but a reciprocal, dynamic interaction constantly constructed by news outlets and the general public. Knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about bats often underlie social support for bat management and intentions to conserve bats. Effective bat conservation and management hinges on understanding these drivers across contexts. Lands classified as wildland-urban interface (WUI) are rapidly expanding in the USA, increasing the likelihood of human-bat interactions from management practices and encroachment on forested landscapes. We surveyed 410 households in one Arizona WUI community to assess residents' knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and emotions toward bats, and differences among these variables associated with demographic traits, past encounters with bats, support for bat management, and willingness to place artificial bat roosts on their properties. Greater knowledge and positive attitudes, beliefs, and emotions positively predicted willingness to place roosts 59% to 85% of the time, varying across demographic groups; they did not predict support for bat management. Wildlife corridors in a landscape include local vegetation, topography, prey base, water and are associated with isolated wildlife habitat patches. They facilitate maintenance of ecological structure and function as well as provide connectivity to faunal populations supporting genetic transfers, and are elements critical to wildlife management. In this work, habitat patches for tiger, both inside as well as outside of Protected Areas have been identified by developing a Habitat Suitability Index model utilizing Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System datasets for the Terai Arc landscape, India. By using a computational approach based on the framework of theory of complex networks, for exclusively pairwise interactions between the habitat patches, a potential tiger corridor network has been structurally identified and studied in this landscape. The interactions between these habitat patches on a spatial scale has been analyzed as a clique of the corridor network. Further, the Clique Percolation Method has been applied to detect overlapping communities of habitat patches in the landscape. The Cliques required for maintaining contiguity between the habitat patches in order to support tiger movement are validated using field observations of tiger communities within the landscape matrix. The model developed for identification of tiger corridors in this study could potentially be of a vital importance for wildlife stakeholders to better understand and manage tiger populations both within and outside of protected areas. The study also highlights Critical Habitat Patches and their importance in maintaining landscape connectivity for tiger dispersal in the landscape. Using a report published by the Government of India as a benchmark, the model presented in the work is found to have an accuracy of 90.73% in predicting tiger carrying patches and the corridor network in the focal landscape. Disturbance of wild reindeer from human activity is a key challenge for wildlife management. We reviewed recent literature on reindeer disturbance in Northern Europe and discuss a major lacuna in this field of research, namely knowledge about the complexity of human behaviour, which is the major agent of disturbance. Past studies have rarely included detailed data on human activities, but instead treated fixed infrastructure as valid proxies for human presence. However, ignoring the dynamic and flexible nature of human agency as a driver of disturbance may bias our interpretation of the observed responses. We argue that incorporating information about the spatiotemporal patterns of human use of infrastructure and the characteristics of the users may greatly improve our knowledge of the potential impacts on wild and semi-domestic reindeer populations and contribute to improved management of their ranges. Municipal governments are emerging as important stakeholders in managing the populations and geographic distributions of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in urban and suburban areas of the Northeastern United States. To understand the variation in municipal-level concerns about deer and municipal policies related to deer management, we distributed a questionnaire to all 351 municipalities across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 2017 (response rate = 74%) and collected data on local bylaws that influence hunting access. We found that concerns about deer vary across the state and some municipalities are taking action to manage increasing deer populations. In particular, our analysis established the importance of deer and deer management in the suburban regions of Massachusetts, while uncovering many local differences within similar suburban areas. The varying relationships between deer populations, public concerns, and municipal actions illustrated the complex role of municipal decision-makers in shaping wildlife management programs. Poaching represents one of the most important issues in wildlife management and biodiversity conservation. In this paper, we analyzed effects of socioeconomic, institutional, and locational characteristics of villages in the periphery of the W Reserve in West Africa on poaching. We used a reduced form model and unique data from 93 villages. Our empirical results showed that population size and distance of the villages to the reserve were related to poaching in the reserve. Villages with larger populations and in closer proximity to the reserve were associated with greater poaching in the reserve. Overall, these results suggest that policies to reduce poaching in the reserve must be considered in a comprehensive framework and include migration incentives for villages with larger populations and are closer to the reserve. Efforts to manage conservation conflicts are typically focused on reconciling disputes between opposing stakeholders over conservation objectives. However, this is an oversimplification of conflict dynamics, driven by the difficulties of understanding and addressing deeper-rooted issues. In this study, an ethnographic approach using a combination of informal discussions, participant observation, and in-depth interviews was used to examine local stakeholder narratives around a conservation conflict over grouse shooting and raptor conservation. Analysis highlighted three main narratives – cooperation, resistance, and despondence, that served as a basis for individuals to justify their responses to conflict: to work toward collaboration, act antagonistically, or avoid. Our analysis suggests that the current status quo in conflict management serves to reinforce antagonistic positions. We recommend a more nuanced approach to understanding stakeholder decision-making that goes beyond superficial disputes to recognize diversity within stakeholder groups, access hidden voices, and encompass the wider socio-political context. An animal's ability to traverse a landscape and utilise available resources is vital for its survival. The movement patterns of an animal provide insight into space use, activity patterns and ecological requirements that are imperative for successful farming and wildlife management practices. Home ranges are often used as a measurement of space use, which provides a quantitative value of an animal's movement patterns in relation to various biological factors. A factor that is often overlooked in the analysis of movement patterns is the effect of moon phase, despite its known impact on the activity and hunting success of nocturnal predators. We live-trapped, radio-collared and monitored five black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas) in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, South Africa, between 2018 and 2019 to determine the impact of various environmental factors on movement patterns. Annual home ranges varied between individuals, were larger in subadults and overlapped between three jackals. Space use and travel velocity suggested a crepuscular activity pattern with a reliance on nocturnal activity and limited diurnal activity. Individual space use suggested variation between moon phases, although overall variation was negligible. Jackals travelled farther during new moon, compared with full moon, with the most notable difference between 23:00 and 04:00. Our results suggest that jackal behaviour does not align with the predation risk hypothesis. Space use and travel velocities varied between seasons, possibly because of differences in activity during mating and pupping periods. Our study confirms the flexibility in jackal space use and suggests a possible relationship with moon phase. To properly understand movement patterns at an individual and population level, we encourage additional research about jackals and various environmental factors via multidisciplinary collaborations. Community-based wildlife management claims pro-poor, gender-sensitive outcomes. However, intersectional political ecology predicts adverse impacts on marginalised people. Our large-scale quantitative approach draws out common patterns and differentiated ways women are affected by Tanzania's Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). This first large-scale, rigorous evaluation studies WMA impacts on livelihoods and wellbeing of 937 married women in 42 villages across six WMAs and matched controls in Northern and Southern Tanzania. While WMAs bring community infrastructure benefits, most women have limited political participation, and experience resource use restrictions and fear of wildlife attacks. It has been recommended that wildlife management should be tailored to either wildlife value orientations (WVOs) or social identities (SIs) because both can influence stakeholders' attitudes. However, a comparison of associations of WVOs and SIs with attitudes of stakeholders is lacking in the literature. We examined WVOs and attitudes toward red deer management among 834 individuals, encompassing foresters, hunting tenants, and conservationists (presumed to have strong SIs), as well as citizens, councilors, and forest owners (presumed to have weak SIs). Foresters' and hunting tenants' attitudes did not differ, despite the presence of different WVOs among each group, whereas conservationists' attitudes partly and citizens,' councilors' and forest owners' attitudes were strongly associated with different WVOs. Those with strong SIs should be addressed in terms of self-concepts and group processes. Maintenance of high levels of genetic diversity is crucial for the recovery of overexploited species and gaining knowledge of genetic diversity of natural populations is crucial to define effective conservation strategies. Spectacled caimans (Caiman crocodilus) were unsustainably exploited for decades in Colombia causing drastic population reductions with unknown effects on genetic structure. We molecularly characterized three spectacled caiman populations from the upper Magdalena River basin (UMRB), analyzing them within the context of the trans-Andean C. c. fuscus sensu stricto lineage, assessing nucleotide and genetic diversity, demographic history, and phylogeography at different scales. Seventeen of the 23 mitochondrial haplotypes currently described for Colombia are present in the UMRB, showing high levels of genetic diversity even when compared with the trans-Andean region (uncorrected genetic distances 0.00-0.87%). Mutational steps between closest haplotypes ranged from one to four while the most differentiated haplotypes were separated by 19 mutational steps across the whole trans-Andean region. Distribution of pairwise nucleotide differences and raggedness tests showed unimodal patterns of mismatch distribution curves fitting the sudden expansion model. Average time since demographic expansion for UMRB, Colombia, and trans-Andean region were inferred as 10,540, 7,591, and 7,071 years before present, respectively, placing the latest expansion close to the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary. Intriguingly, samples from Tolima were overall more related to those collected from Panama and Costa Rica (0.34 ± 0.15%) than the ones collected across Choco (0.45 ± 0.15%), Cauca (0.70 ± 0.09%), and Nariño (0.60 ± 0.14%) departments. We discuss our genetic findings in the context of the management policies carried out in the country during the last decades (unsustainable and sustainable use, and population restocking), evaluating the implications of these events for the genetic integrity and conservation of the species. The vegetation of Mushingashi Conservancy in central Zambia was classified and mapped to provide a template for wildlife management. Putative vegetation types were delineated using Landsat 8 imagery, then sampled with 73 plots for vegetation composition and structure, and topo-edaphic properties. Classification followed a four-stage process. Valley dambo and floodplain grasslands were first separated as landscape units from wooded plots. Hierarchical cluster analysis was then used to identify 13 vegetation types based on woody composition and structure. Convex hull plots on a principal component analysis biplot successfully delineated the topo-edaphic environment and woody structure of each type. Linear discriminant analysis confirmed differences in topo-edaphic environment among types. The main environmental gradient was from vertic clays, supporting open Acacia woodland, to sandy soils, supporting miombo woodland, but other gradients were also important. Of a total of 193 woody species recorded, 25 occurred only on large termitaria. An influence of environmental gradients independent of plant-available moisture and nutrients is emphasised. Total woody cover decreased conspicuously on clay-rich soils with increased water availability. A functional vegetation classification of this nature is considered an essential first step towards the informed management of rangeland for large herbivores. Understanding human interactions with wildlife in parks is critical for wildlife managers, including the psychological nature of such interactions that can lead to improvements in conflict management and other impacts. Indirect and non-naturalistic studies that were based on psychological models of empathy have been conducted in a few countries and support the hypothesis that humans are more concerned about animals that are phylogenetically similar to themselves. Following a naturalistic approach, we investigated whether this bias in preference is expressed in interactions with different species in a Brazilian park. We hypothesized that affiliative-like behaviors (e.g., number of interactions, touching, and feeding) are more directed toward animals of similar phylogenetic groups. A naturalistic setting involves other variables that affect interaction dynamics. We also investigated the aggregation of animals, the proximity of animals to visitors, the presence of children, and day-of-week and time-of-day interactions. Affiliative-like interaction rates were more directed toward mammals than non-mammals and more directed toward primates than nonprimates, thus supporting our hypothesis. Mammals were more aggregated than other animals, and children were present in most of the interactions with all species. These results highlight that wildlife management must consider biodiversity when designing interventions to prevent problems with specific phylogenetic groups and promote healthier interactions between humans and species that are usually less involved in conflicts. Decision-making (DM) is a critical aspect of soccer refereeing. Referees make numerous repetitive decisions, many of which are dependent on appropriate field location and effective interaction with their assistants. Considering the complexity of the sequential DM process, it is not surprising that referees exhibit high decision error rates. Most extant research has focused on the underlying mechanism of the DM process as well as on various influential factors. Less attention has been given to models that consider the range of influential factors which affect the DM process. This article, therefore, presents a new conceptual framework of sequential DM for soccer referees that relies on Tenenbaum's (2003. Expert athletes: An integrated approach to decision making. In J. We start by reviewing research on DM in soccer refereeing and then discuss conceptual considerations. We then present the new conceptual framework. This model incorporates a range of factors, including physical fitness and fatigue, field positioning, visual attention, contextual factors, game management, expertise, psychological factors, and team factors. Data obtained from a sample of 20 elite referees and assistants demonstrated the face validity of the new model. Wildlife management is becoming increasingly critical to improving the sustainability of biodiversity and the welfare of human beings. This paper uses affordance as a lens to explore the design of information systems that can assist in managing wildlife in protected areas. Through an action design research (ADR) study with a forest department, we develop and test design principles for a class of wildlife management analytics system (WMAS). We identify the initial design principles, including elements of the action potential, materiality, and boundary condition, and iteratively refine them based on an instantiation of WMAS through two iterations of design and implementation cycles. Through our work, we contribute to design knowledge by abstracting the artefacts, design principles in particular, and the ADR approach by generalising two new activities and corresponding principles when designing analytical models. The concept of the piosphere is important in rangeland management, wildlife management, desertification. Piosphere research describes the changes in soil, biota and fauna as a function of distance from water sources utilized by grazing animals. Piosphere research has provided a better understanding of how grazing pressure can affect local environments. We conducted a bibliometric analysis to describe the progress of piosphere knowledge between 1915 and 2018. This is the first comprehensive bibliometric analysis of piosphere research, and it provides insights on future challenges, research challenges, and knowledge gaps. Google Scholar was used to identify 875 publications from 68 countries and 10 different languages. Our analyses showedthat research article was the most frequent publication type and piosphere was the most frequent keyword. Australia was first in the number of publications followed by South Africa and USA. Ivan Thrash is the most contributed author with 11 publications. The most frequently cited article is 'Responses of Mediterranean grassland plants to grazing and protection' in The Journal of Ecology. Herbivores, vegetation, soil, livestock, wildlife, and ecological were the most frequent research areas of piosphere investigations. English was the major and dominant language of piosphere publications. Rapid growth was found in piosphere research since the 1990s, enlivened by advances in statistics, remote sensing, GIS, and programming. We recommend that future research should investigate knowledge gaps such as grazing system relationships to piosphere patterns, economic analysis of watering point development and closure, and the implications of climate change and new piospheres. Managing wildlife in landscapes under private ownership requires partnership between landowners, resource users, and governing agencies. Agencies often call on landowners to voluntarily change their practices to achieve collective goals. Landowner support for management action is partially a function of normative beliefs about managing wildlife. Understanding factors that support development of normative beliefs is important for program design, with implications beyond deer. Drawing on norm activation theory, identity theory, and community attachment, we hypothesized that landowners' ascription of responsibility to manage deer were a function of their identity as a wildlife steward and attachment to their community. We tested our hypotheses using structural equation modeling with data from a survey of southeast Minnesota landowners. Results revealed ascribed responsibility to be a function of identity. In turn, identity was predicted by affect toward the community. Findings suggest community-based approaches to wildlife management could improve goal achievement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
