The full mitogenome of an ethanol-preserved museum specimen of Ceramaster japonicus was determined using the NGS Illumina MiSeq platform. The specimen was collected from Tosa Bay, Japan, facing the Pacific Ocean (33.0781 N 134.0601 E), at 700 m depth in 2011. The mitogenome shows a typical metazoan genomic structure, with all of the 37 genes included in its 16,370 base-long mitogenome. We conducted phylogenetic analyses using a data set including 18 publicly available asteroids rooted against five ophiuroids as outgroups. The result confirms the position of C. japonicus in the order Valvatida. The complete mitogenome of C. japonicus reported here is the first reported for the family Goniasteridae Forbes, 1841. The common sunstar, Crossaster papposus, belongs to the family Solasteridae whose ordinal classification has been unstable. Here, for the first time, we assembled and annotated the complete mitochondrial genome of the common sunstar, C. papposus Linnaeus, 1767. The circular genome of C. papposus is 16,335 bp in length and contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, a control region, and large and small ribosomal subunits. The overall genomic structure and gene arrangement were identical to the reported mitochondrial genomes of sea star species, and a phylogenetic analysis of 13 PCGs recovers a closest relationship with the derived cluster of the paraphyletic order Valvatida. The complete mitochondrial genome of the widespread and common Indo-Pacific sea star Archaster typicus has been sequenced in this study. The mitogenome is 16,230 base pairs (bp) in length, with 13 protein coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs and 2 rRNAs. Gene order of its PCGs and rRNAs matches those of nine other asteroid taxa included for comparison in this study, and it has a similar nucleotide composition of 33.08% A, 26.38% T, 25.53% C and 15.01% G nucleotides. The complete mitogenome of L. laevigata was 16,371 bp in length and consisted of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two rRNA, and 22 tRNA. The orders of PCGs and rRNAs were identical to those of the recorded mitogenomes of asteroids. Phylogenetic analyses placed L. laevigata as the sister group to the species of the other Paxillosida. The genus and species of Neochthebius granulosus (Sato) are redescribed. The late instar larva is described for the first time and this is the first larval description for the genus. This beetle is found in the crevices of rocks, inside barnacles, and under seaweed. The geographical variation of N. granulosus from the central coast of Korea and Japan to the southern coast of Korea and Jeju Island is discussed. In this study, we determined the complete mitochondrial genome sequences of Aquilonastra batheri. This is the first study on mitochondrial genome sequencing of the genus Aquilonastra belonging to the family Asterinidae, order Valvatida, and class Asteroidea. The complete mitogenome of A. batheri was 16,463 bp and consisted of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, and two rRNAs. The orders of PCGs and rRNA genes were identical to those of nine recorded mitogenomes of asteroids. The phylogenetic tree determined by the maximum likelihood method revealed that A. batheri was clearly grouped with Patiria pectinifera, which belongs to the family Asterinidae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
