Engaging workers with their work is fundamental for employee wellbeing and performance. Perceived age discrimination in the workplace is a factor that may influence workers' engagement. The present study aimed to analyze the moderating role of emotion regulation in the relationship between perceived age discrimination and work engagement. Survey data were collected from a sample of 453 Portuguese workers of various age groups, between 18 and 65 years-old. Four instruments were used in this study: (a) a sociodemographic questionnaire; (b) the Workplace Age Discrimination Scale (WADS); (c) the Emotion Regulation Scale and (d) the reduced version of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9). Results show that perceived workplace age discrimination negatively impacts work engagement. Further, results suggest that emotional regulation exacerbates the negative relationship between perceived age discrimination and work engagement. The progressively aging workforce is creating challenging issues to organizations, from a human resource management perspective. This study aimed to explore the affective relationship of older adults with their pets during the COVID-19 pandemic; and to assess how this contributed to their mental health. This qualitative study included 351 participants aged 65–88 years from Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Spain. All interviews went through content analysis. Findings indicated five themes: (1) Enabling a meaningful affective relationship (86%); (2) Strengthening affective sharing with partner (68%); (3) Easing new affective relationships (61%); (4) Enhancing sensory stimuli and physical touch (55%); and; (5) Feeling physical pleasure (23%). Three main themes emerged from the content analysis regarding the second objective: (1) Fewer depressive and anxiety symptoms (73%); (2) Fewer feelings of loneliness (68%); and (3) Fewer mood swings (43%). The affective relationship between older adults and their pets was relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic since it solidified affective relationships with their partners and fostered the creation of new relationships. Additionally, it contributed to a deeper affective relationship with themselves, in terms of sensory stimuli, physical touch, and physical pleasure. AbstractPurposeMaterials and methodsResultsConclusionsTo determine the normative values and reference equations of the 4-Meter Gait Speed Test (4MGS) at usual and maximal speed for Portuguese adults. We also assessed the participant experience during the performance of the 4MGS.A cross-sectional study was conducted with individuals without disabilities. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, smoking habits and physical activity (Brief Physical Activity Assessment Tool [BPAAT]) data were collected. Individuals performed 3 repetitions of 4MGS at usual and maximal speeds, and the best performances were recorded. Speed values were calculated by age and sex. Stepwise multiple regressions were used for the reference equations. Participants rated their comfort from 0 (‘not comfortable at all’) to 5 (‘very comfortable’) for each modality and indicated their preferences.A total of 287 individuals (62.4% female; 47.8 ± 19.5 years) were recruited. Speed was significantly reduced after the sixth decade of life compared with the other decades (p < 0.001). Reference equations were: Usual speed = 1.598 – (0.006 x age) + (0.060 x BPAAT classification), R2= 27% and Maximal speed = 2.272 – (0.010 x age) + (0.157 x sex) + (0.73 x BPAAT classification), R2= 38%. Most participants felt ‘very comfortable’ performing the 4MGS at usual speed (94.8%), maximal speed (75.6%) and no preference in 4MGS modalities (69%).Speed is significantly affected by age. For the reference equations, age and physical activity explain the results of usual speed, and both associated with sex explain the results of maximal speed. One of the main applications of machine learning (ML) in remote sensing (RS) is the pixel-level classification of satellite images into land cover types. Although classes with different spectral signatures can be easily separated, e.g. aquatic and terrestrial land cover types, others have similar spectral signatures and are hard to separate using only the information within a single pixel. This work focused on the separation of two cover types with similar spectral signatures, cocoa agroforest and forest, over an area in Pará, Brazil. For this, we study the training and application of several ML algorithms on datasets obtained from a single composite image, a time-series (TS) composite obtained from the same location and by preprocessing the TS composite using simple TS preprocessing techniques. As expected, when ML algorithms are applied to a dataset obtained from a composite image, the median producer's accuracy (PA) and user's accuracy (UA) in those two classes are significantly lower than the median overall accuracy (OA) for all classes. The second dataset allows the ML models to learn the evolution of the spectral signatures over 5 months. Compared to the first dataset, the results indicate that ML models generalize better using TS data, even if the series are short and without any preprocessing. This generalization is further improved in the last dataset. The ML models are subsequently applied to an area with different geographical bounds. These last results indicate that, out of seven classifiers, the popular random forest (RF) algorithm ranked fourth, while XGBoost (×GB) obtained the best results. Child adoption is a highly demanding process for all those involved, including the child, parents, and professionals. Support is needed to maximize the chances of adequate preparation, focusing on not just the parents' preparedness but also the child's preparation for adoption. Preparing a child for adoption is an ethical obligation. Assuming that the child is at the center of the adoption process, this paper highlights the importance of acknowledging the child's specific needs and giving them adequate opportunity to develop into a fully engaged agent throughout the process. This article focuses on the Program for Preparing Children for Adoption (PPCA), a specific manual intervention designed to help professionals prepare children for adoption. The program is based on theoretical concepts of the psychology of adoption, the bioecological development perspective and a narrative psychology approach. First, the PPCA's theoretical background is presented, followed by each one of its core aspects and specific activities. This study aims to analyze the perspectives of intergenerational relationships between older adults and adult children. For this purpose, a qualitative research was carried out, which analyzes these relations at a cross-national level. Four hundred and twenty four older participants aged 65–97 years, were interviewed. Participants were of three different nationalities and lived in the community. All the interviews went through the process of verbatim transcription and subsequent content analysis. Two dimensions of generational ambivalence were revealed from the study; support and the conflict dimensions. Findings of content analysis produced six themes, which represent intergenerational relations between older adults and adult children: older adults-adult children interaction quality; family integration; care and support; definition of limits; distance and alienation; and communication difficulties. This study highlighted the diversity of experiences in old age, in relation to intergenerational relationships and underlined the conflicting expectations from older adults in relation to their adult children. Autobiographical remembering develops in childhood. A late-developing cognitive tool is the cultural life script. The present study aimed at exploring the beginnings of its acquisition and at replicating its acquisition in early adolescence in a Southern-European culture. Study 1 established the Portuguese normative adult cultural life script, against which the cultural life scripts provided by 6- to 16-year-olds could be compared in Study 2. The acquisition of the cultural life script in early to mid-adolescence was confirmed with multiple indicators. In 6- to 8-year olds, life script knowledge was only rudimentary. However, children still agreed highly on a set of mostly non-normative life events which they named as typical for a normal life that are not part of the adult life script. We conclude that children's non-normative concept of life is less helpful for remembering, narrating, and planning a life than is the adult cultural life script with normative events. Biological parenthood is a central life-goal for many couples that can become blocked when they experience infertility. Many couples who undergo fertility treatment will face failure and consequently have to decide whether to continue with treatment. The present study used the qualitative methodology of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to examine self-regulatory approaches that underlie decision-making about continuing treatment. One-time, one-on-one, semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 16 individuals (eight heterosexual couples) after they had experienced at least one treatment failure and were considering whether to undergo another treatment. After treatment failure, individuals used several approaches to remain engaged with biological parenthood, including reframing treatment failure as a learning tool and emphasizing the importance of persistence in achieving success. The apparent decision to continue with treatment was considered non-negotiable and largely made by women in the partnership. Once the decision was made to pursue treatment, it was not discussed further. Given individuals' willingness to engage in treatment, patients should be offered additional support to consider wide psychosocial implications of continuing treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Essential oils are products obtained from plants, by steam distillation, mechanical processes of citrus fruit epicarp, or dry distillation after separation of the aqueous phase by physical processes. They are usually composed of secondary metabolites of aromatic plants with oxygenated structures such as alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, and esters, presenting therapeutic properties such as antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant activities. Essential oils are used in the pharmaceutical, food, and fragrance industries. The increasing use of plants by the pharmaceutical industry makes the study of essential oils crucial to design new bioactive delivery systems. This paper presents aliterature review that summarizes the best advanced data regarding the use of essential oils and their volatile constituents for biomedical applications with focuses on innovative pharmaceutical formulations. Nonetheless, it seems clear that more clinical evaluations are required until essential oils can be considered as possible applications in pharmacy or as adjuvants to current medications. With the increase in evidences directly linking diet and health, several foodstuffs, such as phenolic rich fruits and vegetables, have emerged as possessing potential health benefits. Plants, given their fiber and phenolic content (and their intrinsic biological potential), have long been considered as contributing to health promotion. Therefore, the present work aimed to review the existing evidences regarding the various potential benefits of plant extracts' and plant extract-based products' consumption, with emphasis on in vivo works and epidemiological studies whenever available. Overall, the information available supports that, while there are indications of the potential benefits of plant extracts' consumption, further human-based studies are still needed to establish a true cause-effect. Blueberries, along with other berries, given their flavonoid and antioxidant content have long since been considered as a particularly interesting health promoting fruit. New eco-friendly conditions for Finkelstein reaction employing homogeneous media or alumina-supported reagents, both solventless, were utilized in the bromohydrins and iodohydrins synthesis from 1,3-dichlorohydrin (1,3-DCH), obtained from glycerol. Thus, the trans-halogenation of glycerol-1,3-dichlorohydrin (1) in homogeneous media, using NaI, NaBr salts and organic additives (TBAI, TBAB), led to the synthesis of four different glycerol halohydrins (2a, 2b, 3a, 3b) in regular to excellent conversions (43–96%) and good selectivities to 3a and 2b. Already, the alumina-supported reagents such as KI, KBr, NaBr were used for glycerol-1,3-dichlorohydrin trans-halogenation, in the absence of solvent, producing halohydrin mixtures in high conversions (77–99%) and very good selectivity (82%) to 1,3-diiodo-2-propanol (2b). Objective: The potential benefit or harm of immersion (egocentric perspective) and distancing (observer perspective) on negative experiences are unclear and have not been empirically investigated in therapy. This is a first exploratory study aimed to analyze and compare the perspectives adopted on reflection (immersion and distancing) of negative experiences across therapy and the relationship between them and depressive symptoms in contrasting therapeutic outcomes of emotion-focused therapy (EFT). Method: Three good-outcomes cases and three poor-outcomes cases of EFT, diagnosed with mild to moderate depression at the beginning of therapy, were randomly selected. Immersion and distancing on negative experiences were analyzed using the measure of immersed and distanced speech. The depressive symptoms were assessed by the Beck Depression Inventory-II. Results: Significant differences across sessions were only found in the good-outcome cases which showed a significant decrease of immersion and an increase of distancing, and this evolution pattern was found related to the reduction of symptoms. Moreover, at the beginning of therapy, distancing was higher in the poor-outcome cases rather than in the good-outcome cases. Conclusion: The progressive and significant evolution from higher immersion at the initial phase to higher distancing in the final phase may be helpful in EFT for depression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FrullaniaRaddi is an extant genus of liverworts (Bryophytes) widespread around the world. It belongs to the family Frullaniaceae Lorch., with a large number of species distributed into several subgenera, sections and subsections according with different morphological classifications. As shown in previous studies, mostFrullaniasub-generic classifications are supported by molecular data, indicating that morphological characters appear well suitable to discriminate species. However, deep among-clade relationships remain unclear, probably due to the rapid diversification of main clades, paralleling other plant lineages. In this study, we reconstructFrullaniaphylogeny based on available molecular data used in previous studies, and we present time estimates for the origin of its main branches. Results supported the monophyly of most subgenera as demonstrated in previous studies and supported a rapid diversification of these main lineages. Time estimates under a relaxed molecular clock and with integrated fossil evidence and nucleotide mutation rates further suggested a Jurassic origin of the genus and a rapid diversification during Palaeogene and Neogene. Blueberries are widely recognised as one of the richest sources of bioactive compounds, among which are anthocyanins, though the ripeness of berries has been reported as affecting the phytochemical composition of fruits. Therefore, the present work aimed to evaluate the variation of anthocyanins, and other major phenolics, throughout five ripening stages in four blueberry cultivars. The results showed that the antioxidant capacity and anthocyanin content increased during ripening, reaching the highest values when the blueberries are collected from bunches comprised of 75% ripe blueberries. Antagonistically, the amount of phenolic acid decreases, while the quercetin-3-glucoside levels remain stable. Furthermore, Goldtraube blueberries appear to possess, systematically, higher amounts of phenolic compounds than the other cultivars studied. Thus, when seeking the highest yield of anthocyanins, the preferred harvest should occur in bunches that contain ca 75% of ripe blueberries and, considering the cultivars assayed, the Goldtraube cultivar appears to be the richest in phenolic compounds. Phenolic acids are a particular group of small phenolic compounds which have exhibited some anti-biofilm activity, although the link between their activity and their intrinsic pH is not clear. Therefore, the present work examined the anti-biofilm activity (inhibition of biomass and metabolic activity) of phenolic acids in relation to the environmental pH, as well as other physico-chemical properties. The results indicate that, whileEscherichia coliwas not inhibited by the phenolic acids, both methicillin resistantStaphylococcus aureusand methicillin resistantStaphylococcus epidermidiswere susceptible to the action of all phenolic acids, with the pH playing a relevant role in the activity: a neutral pH favored MRSE inhibition, while acidic conditions favored MRSA inhibition. Some links between molecular polarity and size were associated only with their potential as metabolic inhibitors, with the overall interactions hinting at a membrane-based mechanism for MRSA and a cytoplasmic effect for MRSE. Bunchosia glanduliferais a red-colored fruit and a source of bioactive compounds with antioxidant potential. The fruit was collected in the city of Santo Antonio Patrulha-Brazil, and the pulp contained phenolic compounds, anthocyanins, flavonoids, lycopene, β-carotene, vitamin C, and caffeine. Rutin, vitexin, and quercitrin were the phenolic compounds identified in the pulp. The concentrations of lycopene (16.39 mg/100 g fruit) and β-carotene (8.10 mg/100 g fruit) provided the fruit’s distinct color. The fruit pulp was rich in caffeine (206.35 mg/100 g) and showed antioxidant activity as determined by Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power, 2,2′-Azinobis-(3-Ethylbenzothiazoline-6-Sulfonic acid, and 2,2 Difenil-1-Picrilhidrazil. Context: Chitosan nanoparticles were prepared to encapsulate daptomycin and proposed as a delivery system of this antibiotic to the eye for the treatment of bacterial endophthalmitis. Objective: The aim of this study was to develop daptomycin-loaded nanoparticles to apply directly to the eye, as a possible non-invasive and less painful alternative for the treatment of endophthalmitis, increasing the effectiveness of treatment and reducing toxicity associated with systemic administration. Materials and methods: Nanoparticles were obtained by ionotropic gelation between chitosan and sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP). Physicochemical and morphological characteristics of nanoparticles were evaluated, as well as determination of antimicrobial efficiency of encapsulated daptomycin and stability of the nanoparticles in the presence of lysozyme and mucin. Results: Loaded nanoparticles presented mean particle sizes around 200 nm, low polydispersity index, and positive zeta potential. Morphological examination by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed their small size and round-shaped structure. Encapsulation efficiency ranged from 80 to 97%. Totalin vitrorelease of daptomycin was obtained within 4 h. Determination of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) showed that bacteria were still susceptible to daptomycin encapsulated into the nanoparticles. Incubation with lysozyme did not significantly affect the integrity of the nanoparticles, although mucin positively affected their mucoadhesive properties. Discussion and conclusion: The obtained nanoparticles have suitable characteristics for ocular applications, arising as a promising solution for the topical administration of daptomycin to the eye. Context: Nanotechnology can be applied to deliver and protect antioxidants in order to control the oxidative stress phenomena in several chronic pathologies. Chitosan (CS) nanoparticles are biodegradable carriers that may protect antioxidants with potent biological activity such as rosmarinic acid (RA) in Salvia officinalis (sage) and Satureja montana (savory) extracts for safe and innovative therapies. Objective: Development and characterization of CS nanoparticles as a stable and protective vehicle to deliver RA for medical applications using natural extracts as sage and savory . Materials and methods: Antioxidant -CS based nanoparticles were prepared by ionic gelation with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP), at pH 5.8 with a mass ratio of 7:1 (CS:TPP), with a theoretical antioxidant-CS loading of 40-50%. The nanoparticles were then characterized by different methods such as photon correlation spectroscopy, laser Doppler anemometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC), association efficiency, and antioxidant activity. Results and discussion: Individual and small sizing nanoparticles, around 300 nm, were obtained. SEM confirmed smooth and spherical nanoparticles after freeze-drying. No chemical interactions were found between antioxidants and CS, after encapsulation, by DSC and FTIR. The association efficiency was 51.2% for RA (with 40% loading) and 96.1 and 98.2% for sage and savory nanoparticles, respectively (both with 50% loading). Antioxidant activity values were higher than 0.0348 eq [Asc. Ac.] g/L/g extract and 0.4251 µmol/eq Trolox/g extract. Pilot programmes have gained significance in donor-supported development interventions because of the growing emphasis on measuring impact. The Results-based initiatives (RBI) were conceived as pioneering pilots expected to acquire rigorous evidence on effective interventions to foster women’s economic empowerment. However, they fell short of providing clear or generalizable conclusions on women’s economic empowerment due to design and implementation problems. The RBI nevertheless offer important lessons on common traps in pilot design and implementation. Abstract Nowadays, there is an emergent interest in new trend-driven biomolecules to improve health and wellbeing, which has become an interesting and promising field, considering their high value and biological potential. Astaxanthin is one of these promising biomolecules, with impressive high market growth, especially in the pharmaceutical and food industries. This biomolecule, obtained from natural sources (i.e., microalgae), has been reported in the literature to have several beneficial health effects due to its biological properties. These benefits seem to be mainly associated with Astaxanthin’s high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may act on several brain issues, thus attenuating symptoms. In this sense, several studies have demonstrated the impact of astaxanthin on a wide range of diseases, namely on brain disorders (such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson, depression, brain stroke and autism). Therefore, this review highlights its application in mental health and illness. Furthermore, a S.W.O.T. analysis was performed to display an approach from the market/commercial perspective. The latest decade has witnessed joint efforts by the packaging and the food industries to reduce the amount of residues and wastes associated with food consumption. The recent increase in environmental awareness has also contributed toward development of edible packaging materials. Viable edible films and coatings have been successfully produced from whey proteins; their ability to serve other functions, viz. carrier of antimicrobials, antioxidants, or other nutraceuticals, without significantly compromising the desirable primary barrier and mechanical properties as packaging films, will add value for eventual commercial applications. These points are tackled in this review, in a critical manner. The supply of whey protein-based films and coatings, formulated to specifically address end-user needs, is also considered.
