A series of methacrylic monomers containing azobenzene moiety with alkyl spacer and different substituents is synthesized. Their photophysical and photochemical properties have been investigated. The methacrylic monomers containing azobenzene moiety with flexible alkyl spacers of different lengths and groups of different nature are synthesized, and their physicochemical properties were determined by electronic absorption, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and element analysis. In the present work, the homopolymers built with the use of the free radical polymerization of methacrylic monomers incorporating an azobenzene side-group have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The results of photochemical and optical activities of the corresponding polymers are presented. In this article we report theoretical calculations and experimental findings concerning linear optical and nonlinear optical properties of three model azo-carbazole derivative dyes. The goal of the work was to answer to what extent theoretical modeling can predict actual properties of a series of these dyes. Theoretical calculations were based on MM +, AM1 and PM3 models. Third order nonlinear optical properties of metallophthalocyanines (MPcs) were investigated using degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) method. We also studied how the replacement of peripheral substituent around the MPcs cores correlates with nonlinear optical properties. Therefore third order nonlinear optical susceptibilities (χ<3>) of MPcs with liquid crystal (MPcs-LC) were investigated. We found that the χ<3> values of MPcs-LC increase in comparison with the corresponding values of MPcs. We supposed that this is caused by the increase of the charge transfer effects and change of the dipole moments of the molecule with the increase of molecules dimension. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the frame of this work, we studied organometallic complexes in form of thin films oriented by corona poling. We report measurements of second and third-order nonlinear optical properties (NLO) obtained by SHG and THG techniques. For each compound studied, we determine the electronic contribution of the effective second and third-order nonlinear susceptibilities. We report results of diffraction grating inscription on thin films prepared from epoxy resin doped with azo-carbazole based dyes. Diffraction gratings were recorded at the wavelength 532 nm and monitored through intensity of first order of diffraction (632 nm).
